Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. The case histories discussed include: * 3,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 5,000,000 ton gold deposit in South Dakota. * 1,000,000 ton gold deposit in Australia. * +100,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 25,000,000 ton carbonate deposit in California.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

The purification of hafnium by electron- beam melting at moderate energy inputs and at low pressures was examined in detail . Most metallic impurities and hydrogen were removed in the first few minutes of operation ; oxygen , carbon , and nitrogen were removed at a slower rate . Samples treated by electron bombardment suffered a small loss of weight and a gradual lowering of hardness . The magnitude of each change varied with the energy input and the duration of the melt . Analysis of the data confirms the loss of oxygen as a hafnium monoxide . Approximate activity coefficients for other contaminants are given .

The Jabiluka One and Two uranium deposits occur in Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Cahill Formation, which is part of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the East Alligator River area, Nothern Territory. The Jabiluka One deposit coincides with a "window" through unconformably overlying Middle Proterozoic sandstone of the Kombolgie Formation; Jabiluka Two is completely covered by that sandstone. The observed part of the Cahill Formation exhibits four horizons which are favourable hosts for uranium mineralization. These have been folded into an east-southeast-striking, gently plunging, open asymmetric syncline-anticline structure. The host rocks are mainly chlorite and/or graphite schists and their brecciated equivalents which have undergone initial regional prograde metamorphism to the amphibolite facies, then retrograde metamorphism to the greenschist facies. Mineralization consists of pitchblende, mainly filling open spaces and to a lesser extent in disseminated form. Chlorite, pyrite and quartz are commonly associated with the uranium mineralization. A portion of the Jabiluka Two deposit contains economic concentrations of gold. Structural preparation with low-pressure conditions at these sites appears to be the most significant ore control. Genetic hypotheses favour initial deposition in Lower Proterozoic sediments, followed by remobilization during later orogenic events. The deposits bear a marked similarity to some pitchblende deposits in central Canada.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps ; direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. ONE of the perplexing problems that face the translator of an old technical treatise is the question of terms for units of weight and measure. We have used an English word only when it is linguistically equivalent to the Italian one and is a unit of approximately the same size. Libbra and oncia thus become pound and ounce, for the actual weights were within 10 per cent of the modem Troy weights. On, the other hand, the length measures braccio, palmo, and dito, which could be rendered literally as arm, palm, and finger or digit, respectively, have no good English metrological equivalents and it has seemed best to retain the Italian words. The exact transfer of Biringuccio's weights and measures into modern terms is impossible because of the uncertainty as to his standards. Even as late as 1803, when the metric system was first introduced into Italy, practically every city had its own standards. There were, for example, at least eight different palmi, varying from 22.3 to 29.2 centimeters. The values listed below for the various units mentioned by Biringuccio are the Florentine ones, which were also used in Siena and Tuscany: [ ]

The petroleum refining industry makes extensive use of catalysts for the conversion of crude oils into more usable products such as gasoline, fuel oil and gas, aromatics, and others. Catalysts used for hydraprocessing contain cobalt-molybdenum or nickel -molybdenum, although there are catalysts that also contain tungsten. During hydroprocessing, nickel and vanadium are deposited on the catalysts, eventually rendering them inactive. The refiners are then confronted with the problem of disposing the spent catalysts. In the past, landfilling was a common method of disposal and it is still practiced in some countries. Other refiners prefer to stockpile the spent catalysts at the refineries until the price of metals warrants their sale to metal reclaimers. This practice, however, poses environmental problems to the refineries for storage and disposal of spent catalysts. Other types of catalysts are amenable to regeneration. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, and alumina from spent hydroprocessing catalysts by Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and to review the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate for pressure leaching of spent catalysts.

"The first printed report on Canada's coal resources was published in Paris in 1672(1. Written by Nicholas Denys, then Governor for France of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), the report dealt exclusively with the coal of the Atlantic region because little or nothing was known about the interior of North America. Clearly, also, he wrote about a resource of which much was known among the military and early settlers of that day. This early knowledge is not surprising because the presence of coal is clearly displayed in the coastal cliffs of Cape Breton as it was also, at a later date, to the first arrivals on Vancouver Island.An example of early use was that of the French garrison at Fort Louisburg in the first half of the 1700s. Still earlier, in 1643, Governor Winthrop of New England reported the receipt of a small ship load of coal from New Brunswick (2). Despite this early knowledge there was no significant development of coal mines until the 1800s. This had to await the ending of wars between the French and British factions and the growth of population. Basically, also, its development awaited the beginning of the Industrial Age. Organized coal mining began in Canada in 1825 with the formation of the General Mining Association. This British firm was the creation of a group of London jewellers which had been granted royal rights, by the British crown, to all minerals in Acadia (substantially the present Maritime Provinces). The Association took over a number of existing small mines and opened up larger operations in the Sydney coal field. Subsequently, it expanded to the mainland Nova Scotia fields at Stellarton and Springhill. The Association continued in existence as the major coal producer in Canada until 1899 when it sold its properties to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited (3). This Montreal-based firm managed the coal mines as a major Canadian producer of coal until 1968 when financial problems led to the expropriation of the mines by the Government of Canada. The federal government established the Cape Breton Development Corporation to operate the larger mines on Cape Breton Island. This Crown corporation continues to be a .major producer of coal in Canada."

ABB has received an order for one of the most challenging mill drive projects in its history. With one SAG mill and one ball mill to be added at an iron ore mine in Sweden, the customer’s plant managers wanted to have the most efficient solution for driving their mills but had the budget limitations typically faced by the majority of mining companies during periods of market downturn. To find the best balance between cost of acquisition and highest performance throughout the lifetime of the plant, ABB was selected to deploy a synchronized bypass solution, in which only one drive system is used for two different mills in series. However, being one of the first grinding mills in the world with such a solution was not the only challenge the ABB team faced: The inclusion of some mill application functions - e.g., frozen charge protection, automatic positioning and creeping mode - brought the demands on the engineers to another level. With only one frequency converter and one mill application controller available, the configuration logic and interlocks had to be meticulously designed and thoroughly tested to ensure a smooth and safe startup. The solution offers a footprint reduction and more operator flexibility at a reduced investment as each mill can be run in both directions, and wear on the mechanical components can be greatly reduced due to ABB’s premium ring-geared mill drive (RMD). This paper will describe the details of the project, the configuration developed and the tests performed to guarantee correct software functionality. Mill startup is scheduled for January 2016.

The preparation of a paper reporting fluorspar economics in the United States at one point in time could have been somewhat complicated be- cause of the number of producers, both large and small, that derived production from different locations throughout the Western U. S. and the Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky fluorspar districts . Companies such as Allied Chemical and William- son Mining operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, Colorado, the Colorado Fluorspar Company operated mines and mills.

"The trend towards near net shape casting requires the development of more complex design and control algorithms for continuous casting ""machines in particular with respect to the solidification process.Compared to conventional continuous casting the reduction in casting thickness allows to influence more directly the solidification rate by control variables like surface cooling and/or casting speed.In order to enable the determination of these control variables for a given solidification profile, an algorithm (inverse solidification analysis) has been developed based on nonlinear constrained optimization. The application of the model is illustrated by practical examples ranging from conventional continuous casting to advanced thin slab casting.IntroductionProcess development in the Iron and Steel Industry is directed towards the realization of continuous process sequences. Since the direct linkage of processes imposes some restrictions onto the individual process steps, more complex algorithms are needed for design of equipment and control of operation. In particular the recent trend to reduce casting thickness, i.e. to cast thin slabs, has made the direct coupling of continuous casting and rolling absolutely necessary. The paper presents isothermal recrystallization curves for 0.08 and 0.15 pct C steel at subcritical temperatures following small amounts of plastic deformation. The effects of deformation, temperature, and aging on nucleation and growth rates ore described. The free energy of activation for grain boundary migration in steel is given. SEVERAL excellent reviews of the literature have appeared concerning the recrystallization of metals.'-' The present investigation follows the approach advanced by Mehl, Stanley, and Anderson,6-7 in which the rate of recrystallization was analyzed in terms of N, the rate of nucleation, and G, the rate of growth of recrystallization nuclei. Two lots of low carbon, capped steel of the analysis given in Table I were studied. Each lot consisted of a 150 lb coil which had been hot rolled to 0.083 in. and then cold rolled to 0.042 in. at the mill. Strips 0.930 in. wide were sheared perpendicular to the rolling direction. Both steels were normalized before studying their recrystallization characteristics. The strips were cleaned, painted with a magnesia-acetone paste, and made into packs of equal weight, wrapped in 0.002 in. copper foil. The packs were placed in a salt bath at 900°C for 30 min and air cooled. A relief anneal followed in a second salt bath for 15 min at 650°C. The relief anneal was found necessary from early tests in which a longer incubation period and slower rate of recrystallization were observed in relief-annealed lot A steel than in similar material which was strained and recrystallized directly after being normalized. This effect, which indicates the presence of transformation and/or cooling stresses in steel air cooled from above the A, temperature, has also been observed by Samuels8 and Masing.9 Figs. 1 and 2 show the microstructure of lot A and B materials and illustrate the rather uniform No. 8 ASTM grain size produced by this heat treatment. Winlock and Leiter10 observed that strip specimens which had their sharp edges removed elongated more uniformly than those which were not polished. Similarly, when the sheared edges were removed on a belt grinder, it was found in the present investigation that such samples recrystallized more uniformly than did unpolished strips. Therefore, all strips were carefully rounded prior to their extension. The approximate strain limits for the production of large recrystallized grains are from 6 to 12 pct extension." It was found that for the purpose of this investigation, 8 and 9 pct elongation were suitable deformations. The strain rate employed was 0.01 in. per in. per min and produced a yield point elongation of 4 pct. Winlock and Leiter found that mild steel of No. 8 ASTM grain size gave the same yield point elongation when extended at 0.012 in. per in. per min. All of the lot A and B strips extended in tension developed a straight, stretcher strain line at each grip when the upper yield point was reached. The lines were parallel and made an angle of 55" with the edge of the strip. They approached each other with increasing strain and met near the center of the sample at the end of the yield point elongation. Immediately thereafter, a small drop in load was observed and then the load increased in a regular manner with increasing extension. The grips were initially 8 in. apart. After extension, the 6 in. gage length was carefully cut into 1 in. samples. The remainder of the strip was discarded. After a flash pickle in hot 50-50 hydrochloric acid, six samples, each of which had been taken from a different strip, were placed in a basket and submerged in a lead pot for isothermal recrystallization. Although no recovery effect was observed, strain aging did occur after extension. Therefore, samples were always recrystallized within 24 hr after their cold deformation. After recrystallization, the samples were etched with a solution comprised of one part by volume of nitric acid with three parts of water. Bromide printing paper was exposed directly at low magnifications and later used with a mask to measure the desired quantities. First, the average diameter of the largest grain visible in each sample was determined using dividers. Next, the number of recrystallized grains per unit area was counted and recorded as n. Then, for each sample, the combined area of the recrystallized grains was measured by transcribing the grain outlines to standard graph paper. Many determinations of the area of the recrystallized grains were repeated five times and indicated a standard error that was not greater than 25 pct. The average area for six samples was divided by the area of the mask to yield the percentage recrystallized. "Depending on the application, zirconia, fused magnesia and graphite have been found to be the most suitable crucible materials for melting uranium metal and its alloys. Although graphite has been found to be satisfactory for uranium and uranium alloy castings with cross sections of 4 square inches or greater, ceramic-type molds are superior for small sections and those shaped castings which prohibit the economic use of machined graphite molds. Heating cycles, addition mechanisms and furnace conditions for melting are discussed."

India hosts a wide range of globally significant mineral resources, including four fuel minerals; 11 metallic minerals; 22 minor minerals and 52 non-metallic minerals. The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country's landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.

The controlled addition of ammonia to cyanide solutions inhibits the leaching of copper minerals but extracts up to 80% Au using as little as 10% of the cyanide compared with conventional cyanidation of copper-gold ores. The solubility of copper minerals and copper speciation in solution is dependent on NH3, CN-, pH and Eh. Rotating disc and electrochemical studies show that gold is leached by a mixed Cu-CN--NH3 complex with either Cu(II) or O2 as oxidant. This complex is slowly oxidised to CuCN and Cu(OH)2 by air.

In cyanide leaching procedure, achieving an acceptable efficiency for silver and gold is very time-consuming, thus, enough studies have not been performed for optimization and modeling of this process. The kinetics of cyanide leaching includes two steps: first step comprises a sharp slope while the other has a slight increasing trend. In the present study, in order to reduce the time and cost, the cyanide leaching process of a sulfide silver/gold ore was optimized in the first period. The applied parameters and their ranges are: temperature 20-40 (°C); time 1-8 (hrs); cyanide concentration 1-2 (mole cyanide / mole Cu); the percentage of solid to liquid 1-2 (%) and pH 10-12. For design of experiments fractional factorial 2(5-1) was used. Also four center points were applied to increase the accuracy of the model. In addition, by analysis of variance (ANOVA) the most effective parameters were identified and the optimized condition was determined. A regression model was proposed to describe the effects of independent variables and their interacting role on silver recovery. Results showed that the model was linear for silver and nonlinear for gold. In the gold recovery process, the two important parameters are time and pH with the former being more effective. Due to the existence of cyanide ions in the medium, temperature and cyanide concentration have less influence in the gold recovery process. Solid to liquid ratio, in addition, comprises a slight negative impact on the procedure. This emphasizes the different kinetics of silver/ gold cyanide leaching. Finally, using the optimum condition the amount of silver and gold obtained were 61% and 67% in 8 hours, respectively. The experimental system for mine venti1ation control in Staszic colliery has two - level structure. In the lower - measuring 1evel the existing computer - based early fire detection system has been used completed with a number of additional sensors needed for ventilation parameters monitoring. The higher 1evel is a secondary computer equipped with a suitab1e dedicated software performing data processing according to the control a1gorithm. Direct control of air flow in a selected mine district is performed by means of a remotely controlled automatic regulator. Apart from functional tests of the system and its elements some research work has been carrying out in the colliery based on observations of transient effects caused by changes in air flow distribution.

Concentrating plants, in common with other types of industrial plants, cannot operate without lectric power. The elctric distribution system and utilization equipment; therefore, must be carefully considered in all phases of plant design. Two important aspects of proper distribution and usage of electric power are the selection of voltage levels and the methods of system grounding. These are not necessarily the most important design considerations, but are perhaps more controversial than other major points, Modern plants demand increasing amounts of power which, since electric power is the product of voltage and current means higher voltages or currents. Higher voltages require more insulation, higher currents more conductor. The equipment designer?s problem is to obtain in his transformer, cable, switchgear, controller, motor, etc a balance of insulation and conductor to obtain a satisfactory design at lowest cost. To provide the most economical system, both in initial and operating costs requires the system designer to select the proper voltage level. Adequate voltage also permits expansion to meet future requirements, and results in better operation of utilization equipment, Relatively little advancement has been made in recent years in improving conductors; however, great progress has been made in improving insulation. Thus modern plants, in general, now find it more economical to use higher voltages than they did previously. For example plants which only a few years ago would have used 2400 volts as a system voltage often find nowdays that 4160 volts is their proper choice. If the plant requires 10,000 kva br more, then an even higher voltage, such as 13,800 volts, will prove economical. However, for the average concentration plant, with less than 10,000 kva demand, the choice of distribution voltages is between 2400 and 4160 volts, and 480 volts will be used for the low voltage utilization system.

"Abstract-Geology contributes essential information toward obtaining high-quality resource/reserve estimates. In this context, geology can be considered under the following overlapping topics: regional geology, detailed (deposit) geology, mineralogy, ore deposit models and continuity, with geological mapping being fundamental to all. Each of these topics is considered here in terms of potential contributions to "improved" mineral inventory estimation. Some of the principal conclusions are:1. Regional geological relations must be consistent with deposit geology. It is common that important geological relations are more clearly evident in various regional locales than in highly altered and/or highly deformed mineralized areas containing mineral deposit.2. Detailed geology provides information for a geometric model of a deposit, a model that serves as a basis for mine planning. It is important to distinguish fact from interpretation in such models. Substantial effort is required to characterize the geometric margins of a deposit and the relation of these margins to the simplistic geometric form that normally emerges as an interpretation.3. Mineralogical studies relate to many aspects of deposit evaluation including abundance of ore and deleterious minerals, spatial distribution of ore and deleterious minerals, grain size characteristics of important minerals, mill design, etc.4. Ore deposit models contribute substantially to confidence in developing a three-dimensional geometric model of a deposit for mine planning. Specifically, they are a basis on which to develop rules for interpolation and extrapolation of ore, and they contribute to recognition of domains, each with its own characteristic continuity and margin character.5. Continuity is dependent on mineralization style and may be controlled structurally and/or chemically. It is important to distinguish geological continuity and value continuity. A wide range of classical geological methods are useful in examining geological continuity; value continuity is best viewed as a statistical characteristic that is quantified by any of several measures of autocorrelation."
