Gerwick Inc., Sverdrup (now Jacobs) and DMJM (now DMJM Harris) designed the $779 mill seismic upgrade of the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge over the San Pablo Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area and provided construction support to Caltrans. Construction of the marine foundation retrofit was completed by a joint venture of Tudor Saliba/Tidewater/Koch-Skanska and their subcontractors: Pomeroy Precast Construction, AGRA Foundations, Dutra Construction and Vortex Divers. Construction management and inspection was performed by Caltrans with support of various consultants.

In this work, we have elucidated the two-step oxidative reaction mechanism of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol by adsorbing oxygen atom for oxidative decomposition reaction of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol on oxide catalyst surface using ab initio molecular orbital calculation. In the first oxidation, total energies of reaction products have been shown extremely stabilized at all oxidation positions. This reaction occurs due to charge transfer from benzene ring to adsorbing oxygen atom. As a result, ? bonding of benzene ring are weakened. However, the benzene ring of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol does not perform cleavage reaction. In the second oxidation, the benzene ring of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol can perform cleavage reaction, since the second oxidation obtains larger stabilized energies than the first oxidation.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 191 composites from the central Mesabi Range, Minn., chiefly by reductive roasting and magnetic separation. After reductive roasting and magnetic separation at minus 325 mesh, 28 composites produced concentrates that contained an average of 66.0 percent iron with less than 10 percent silica. Recovery of contained iron was over 90 percent. Natural magnetic material in excess of 5 percent was present in 142 composites. Trial flotation tests were used to evaluate three samples unresponsive to reductive roasting and magnetic separation procedures, and satisfactory concentrates having low silica contents (averaging 6.6 percent) were achieved.

Human response to blast induced vibration and air overpressure is an unsolved problem that accompanies excavation process in mining. Pre-assessment and understanding of annoyance due to production blasting is probably one of the most important aspects of a successful mining operation. Complaints arising due to unoptimised blasts lead to various critical situations that hamper production. Inspite, this important aspect has been covered by a limited number of researchers in the world and probably least in Indian context. Human response is a complex phenomenon and the sensitivity of individual also vary from person to person depending on various factors like age, sex, literacy, health and exposure to mining. With ever increasing demand of minerals, opencast mines are expected to approach habitats and thus mine management may witness increased response to blasting. Many developed countries have their own guidelines based on scientific analysis, addressing such environmental problems, where as there are a few studies available in India. This study introspects above phenomenon in tune with mining requirements by analysing direct human response. This paper is based on a case study regarding the human response to blast induced hazards in a Manganese mine situated in central India. Advanced techniques of Critical Path Method and Multiple Response Analyses have been used to unearth important inferences on the response of different crosssections of population residing about the mine to blast induced noise, ground vibration and air overpressure. Various inferences drawn may provide guidelines to the planners, environment or safety departments and blasting official for safe and environment friendly blast design.

To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. High-quality titanium-rich material is of significance in the development of titanium industry as it is the main raw material to produce sponge titanium and titanium white using chloride process. Activation roasting of titanium slag with high Ca and Mg contents as adding H3PO4 followed by acid leaching was investigated to prepare titanium-rich material. The effects of H3PO4 dosage, roasting temperature and time, hydrochloric acid quantity, acid leaching temperature and time on TiO2 grade and removal of impurities were studied. The results show that after the finely ground titanium slag roasted with 8% H3PO4 at 1000 for 2h, most Mg impurities in anosovite solid solution structure were converted into simple acid–soluble compounds. The impurities such as Ca and Mg obviously decreased when the hydrochloric acid concentration was 20%, leaching at 100 °C for 2h, from which a titanium-rich material containing 82.56% TiO2 and 1.15% (CaO+MgO) was obtained.

The JORC Code, which has been in existence as a Code incorporated in the listing rules of the Australian Stock Exchange and New Zealand Stock Exchange since 1989 and 1992 respectively, has been revised and will be re-released in 2003. This revision followed a call for submissions in December 2001, the publication of an exposure draft in late-2002 and an exposure period during which a large number of constructive comments were received. These comments were reviewed and a further exposure draft released as part of the current exposure draft of the ASX listing rules. It is anticipated that the final Code will be incorporated into the stock exchanges listing rules in late-2003. The 1999 JORC Code has been the standard on which other reporting Codes have been based, each of which has contained refinements. Three in particular, the Reporting Code from the United Kingdom/Ireland/Western Europe, the new Canadian Reporting standards and the SAMREC Code from South Africa, influenced JORC in the preparation of the 2003 JORC Code. Whilst there are differences between the 1999 Code and the 2003 Code, these changes are mainly in the guidelines. The Code definitions, which are largely in accord with agreed international definitions, remain substantially unchanged. The two main changes in the 2003 Code are the requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation relating to the reporting of Exploration Results, and the introduction of æRecognised Overseas Professional OrganisationsÆ as overseas organisations to which Competent Persons may belong. Other changes include: clarification of the reporting of exploration targets or potential; the rearrangement of the diamond reporting clauses; the introduction of guidelines for the reporting of Industrial Minerals; modification of the coal clauses and recognition of the new Coal Guidelines; and the introduction of a guideline encouraging the discussion of relative accuracy and confidence in resource/reserve estimates. Other lesser changes to the Code are listed and discussed briefly. The release of the 2003 JORC Code maintains the standard set by JORC as a world leader in the development of mineral reporting Codes and their adoption by industry.

"IntroductionTHE ORES treated at the concentrator of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, Britannia Beach, B.C., have always contained some lead, but it was not until 1950 that the combination of lead headings and lead price was such that recovery of this metal at Britannia became worthwhile. In that year, with the mining of a new orebody, the lead in the mill feed was raised from 0.07 per cent to 0.15 per cent. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite concentrates are produced by flotation at Britannia, •and 95 per cent of the lead in the mill feed reports with the chalcopyrite concentrate, so that the rise in lead headings was reflected almost wholly in the lead content of the copper concentrate. In 1950, investigation was started to determine if some of this lead could be recovered economically."

The anthracite-producing region is in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania, and has an area of approximately 484 square miles. It is divided geographically into three separate fields, known as the Northern, Middle and Southern. The Northern field, with Wilkes-Barre approximately at its center, is a basin about 60 miles long and almost 6 miles wide at its greatest distance across. Generally speaking, it may be said that the coal measures in this field lie horizontally, or on slight pitches, and consist of from 11 to 19 veins of coal, varying in thickness from several inches to several feet. The intervening strata between veins may be composed of slate, clay, rock or shale, or a combination of several, and are sometimes very thin. This condition often causes a treacherous roof, therefore roof support and the attending hazard of mining are problems of concern. The Middle field is made up of a number of small basins of not very great depth, and the measures, which are in like number to those of the Northern field, are varying inclinations running from nearly flat to steep pitches. The Lower, or Southern field, is made up of basins of great depth, some being 4000 ft. deep, and its measures are mostly on very steep pitches. In certain sections this Southern field is being mined at an elevation of 1300 ft. below sea level, on a pitch ranging from 50' to practically vertical, and because of the tremendous pressure and the inherent gas in the seams, outbursts of coal frequently occur at the face, locally known as "bumps." These outbursts are accompanied by a rumbling noise, after which gas is usually found. This condition makes mining a difficult and extremely hazardous undertaking, and unusual skill is required on the part of the miner to drive and maintain openings necessary to the production of coal. Miners working in such seams on the heavy pitch must carry face batteries (Fig. 1) to afford proper protection while working at the face, because of the outbursts and free running coal. The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014. A Japanese mining engineer was given a year's leave of absence by his company and dispatched on a tour of inspection of all the principal coal mining regions of the world. He visited the New Castle region of England, Wales, Scotland, France, Germany and Alsatian mines, the underseas col¬lieries at Nova Scotia and Vancouver, and our own important fields of Illinois, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. You are probably surprised to know that after seeing all these, he pronounced the Gebo mine of the Owl Creek Coal Company as the most interesting operation he had seen. The Gebo Mine is located about three miles west of Kirby on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in the Big Horn Basin region of Wyoming, 500 miles north of Denver and 200 miles south of Billings, Montana. The mine is working on a coal bed five or six to eleven or twelve feet' thick, dipping 22 to 23 degrees toward the northeast. The coal occurs in what is called the Eagle formation; and is found between two massive sandstones from 25 to 65 feet thick, which, weathering into bold', gray-colored cliffs, serves as a guide to the location of the coal bed. The deepest workings have an overburden of 800 feet. Cleavage planes of the coal extend at an angle of 45 degres to the pitch, and perpendicular to roof and floor. The coal itself is generally clean and not difficult to cut. It ignites readily from spontaneous combustion, however, which circumstance makes an ever-present fire hazard which must be carefully watched and guarded against. The coal is classed as sub-bituminous with analysis about as follows: Moisture 17% Volatile Matter 33% Fixed Carbon 46% Ash 4% Sulphur, about ½ % B. t. u. value a trifle under 11,000. It is known as Owl Creek coal, is one of the best domestic and steam fuels in the West, and is very popular in Montana, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska. While the coal slacks somewhat rapidly when exposed to the weather, it stores readily for months if placed under cover. On account of the somewhat isolated position of the mine as regards manufacturing establishments, there was a decided difficulty in disposing of slack, especially during the early years of the mine (1907 to 1914), and approximately 10 per cent of the entire product had to be wasted as slack during those years. This difficulty has been largely overcome since 1914, due partly to growth of manufacturing establishments in tributary territory, and also to enlarged transportation facilities. Also largely due to its isolated position, the mine has been compelled to use an extremely large proportion of box cars, much over 50 per cent of the product (in some years 75 per cent) being shipped in box cars, which, of course, entails extensive loading equipment and increases cost of loading. The output of the Gebo Mine for 1920 was 348,000 tons, for 1921, 273,000 tons; the rate of production during the year 1922 was over 1,700 tons daily, and 2,000 tons daily in January, 1923. The mine was developed by driving three openings straight down the pitch, the main slope being 12 to 14 feet wide and 3,000 feet long. Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

This paper highlights salient features of an excavation 38 m (Length) by 10 m (Width) by 24 m (Depth) carried out in Central Kolkata. Secant pile wall (SPW) formed using a combination of alternating 1200 mm & 800 mm diameter piles was used. Six layers of struts and waler beams, including bottom slab were utilized as lateral restraints to piles. The geotechnical profile for excavation zone was predominantly silty sand to sandy silt. The profile is characteristic of river channel deposit usually encountered in Kolkata. Temporary stage analysis (including seepage analysis) and design were carried out in FEM softwares. Design checks for clay bursting, piping, bottom heave, etc. were also carried out. Extensive instrumentation and monitoring were carried out during the excavation period to check parameters such as ground movement, pile movement, piezometric heads, etc. as per review levels. During excavation, ground improvement using Tube-a-manchette grouting technique was also required to be carried out as per field observations. The paper discusses some of the major challenges faced as well as measures taken to counter them, during deep excavation carried out in silty soils in a very congested Urban setting in the heart of a Megacity.

The average yearly rainfall from 1921 to 1936, inclusive, was 18.74 in. The maximum condition of the atmosphere is in June, July and August, and the minimum is in January and February. The surface temperatures, of course, influence the temperatures of the downcast shafts; however, the variation between winter and summer causes a difference of only 2" to 3" in the stopes and working places that are not close to the intake shafts. No metallurgical process developed in the 20th century compares with froth flotation in its effect on the mineral industry. Processes like gravity - concentration, amalgamation, and pyrometallurgical reduction are of ancient origin; others like cyanidation and electrolytic reduction were well established by 1900. Such metallurgical processes as heavy-media separation, ion-exchange, and solvent extraction belong to this century, but their influence is small compared with froth flotation. Data collected by the U. S. Bureau of Mines* in a canvass of 202 froth flotation plants reveal that, in 1960, 198- million tons of material was treated to recover 20-million tons of concentrates which contained approximately $1 billion in recoverable products. SIGNIFICANCE OF FLOTATION Froth flotation as described in this chapter refers to a wet process for separating properly ground mineral particles into two or more products. It involves the separation of mineral particles from each other in a liquid pulp by means of air bubbles. Finely crushed ore is agitated in water with the addition of air or other gases. Various chemicals and oils are added to cause the selected mineral particles to attach themselves to the air or gas bubbles. These bubbles, carrying the mineral particles, rise to the surface where they are removed in a froth, while the other particles remain suspended in the pulp. The earliest flotation divided the raw material into two products: a bulk concentrate that was removed as a froth and a tailing that remained in the flotation machine. The froth usually contained the valuable constituents. The successful application of such a process depended on the recovery of a single concentrate from which one or more valuable constituents could be recovered by a chemical or smelting process. With the advance of the art, however, the principle of selective flotation, by which two or more relatively pure products could be recovered from complex raw materials, was evolved. Executive Summary The future of coal as an important energy source in the 21st century will depend heavily on whether or not our industry is recognized for its performance. We have had a major role in powering our nation through the 20th century ... but many today do not understand that role nor do they know that 56% of our nation's electricity today comes from coal. Corporate communications, marketing, and public relations must be a high priority of our industry if we are to survive in the society of the 21st century as a viable energy option for powering our nation. The time to start is now. The place to start is locally. The way to strengthen local and regional efforts is to network on a regional and national level with associations who have the ability and the will to develop effective communications strategies. Introduction The Minnkota Power Systems is a regional association of 26 electrical suppliers. Serving more than 96,000 customers in a 34,500 square mile service area in Minnesota and North Dakota, the association includes 12 municipal utilities, 12 distribution cooperatives, a municipal power agency, and a generation and transmission cooperative. The Minnkota Power Systems generating capacity totals 613 megawatts, and 83% of it is fired by lignite coal. On an annual basis, 80% of our total energy is derived from coal. We are proud of our long association with the coal industry. Our pride shows in the very visible role that coal plays in our marketing and public relations efforts. In 1993, the Minnkota Power Systems had one of the lowest wholesale rates in the country, at 3.1 cents per kWh. Average residential rates were 5.8 cents per kWh. "Oxyethylated compounds are used as reagents-regulators in the flotation of non-sulfide ores, in particular, apatite-containing ores. Thus, the necessary degree of selectivity in the flotation separation of two calcium-containing minerals of apatite and calcite is achieved only by using, in addition to a collector, regulators-reagents from the nonylphenol ethoxylates class. In order to establish the most optimal structures, this paper presents a comparative assessment of the physical-chemical and flotation properties of several classes of oxyethylated compounds - alkylphenol ethoxylates, aliphatic alcohol ethoxylates and oxyethylated carboxylic acid. The authors have studied their dispergating ability with respect to the air phase and calcium soaps of the carboxylic collector. Dependences of foaming properties of regulators on the degree of oxyethylation have been determined. Adsorption isotherms of sodium oleate on apatite and calcite in the presence of regulators have been obtained. It has been shown that the presence of oxyethylated compounds in the solution reduces the amount of the adsorbed fatty acid collector. The influence of the considered classes of regulators on apatite flotation has been studied. The interrelation of flotation properties of oxyethylated compounds and their molecular structure has been established.INTRODUCTION Flotation plays a leading role in complex apatite-containing ores processing. However, two calcium-containing minerals - apatite and calcite, which compose apatite-carbonate ores, are characterized by close flotation properties. Selective separation of these minerals is a difficult task, the solution of which is impossible without using reagents-regulators. One of the ways to ensure the selectivity of the flotation separation of calcium-containing minerals is the use of reagents-depressants such as sodium silicate, starch, cellulose derivatives, and others (Liu et al., 2016; Rao et al., 1989).
