"The Stobie No. 7 shaft, 14 ft diameter, double- drum skip hoist, was installed at the INCO Limited Frood Stobie Complex in 1942. Figure 1 shows the hoist layout. The hoist was originally equipped with babbitted journal bearings on the main drum shaft and pinion gears. In 1990, the hoist was modernized with a new braking system, two new 2000 hp D.C. drive motors, a thyristor armature supply and a PLC control system. The new drive motors were connected to the drive pinion gears with a gear type flexible coupling. The pinion gear journal bearings were refitted during the refit in 1990 as the existing babbitted bearings showed signs of wear. The pinion gear journal bearings had always run warm and had external cooling applied during the warm summer months. Figure 2 shows the journal bearings on the pinion shaft. The skip hoist main bull gear and two pinion gears were replaced in 1997 because of cracked bull gear spokes. New drive couplings were installed on the pinion gears and the pinion journal bearings were modified to allow some self-aligning properties to try to reduce the heating and wear on the babbitt. The modifications did not significantly reduce the heating problems and a decision was made in the spring of 1998 to convert the bearings to self-aligning, anti-friction-type bearings.The traditional roller bearings used on double helical pinion drive gears in hoist applications has always been double-row spherical roller bearings due to their high load-carrying capacity and misalignment allowances.Unlike single helical gears, double helical arrangements do not exert axial thrust on the pinion gear bearings, therefore, both bearings in the pillow blocks must float easily with any pinion displacement. Drum misalignment, thrust bearing end play and a multitude of other influences causes continuous axial displacement of the pinions when in operation. This constant displacement or “hunting” of the pinion gear to maintain its centre on bull gear often exceeds the axial clearance limits of spherical roller bearings thus resulting in a continuous sliding motion of the bearing outer rings against the housing seats. With time, the housing fit eventually wears, creating an out-of-round condition for bearing housing (maximum allowable cylindricity tolerance is IT4/2). When this happens, the pillow block housings must be replaced or re-machined to specification. Premature bearing wear and overheating will occur if a housing out-of-round condition is encountered."

This chapter repeats the Chapter 10 calculations but reports the results in terms of the mass industrial oxygen mass hydrocarbon fuel blast preheat energy combinations that will produce 65% Cu matte, 1500 K, from CuFeS2 concentrate. It also determines the energy inputs equivalent to these combinations.

Although Peirce-Smith converting remains the workhorse in matte converting, the copper and nickel industries are still confronted with production hindrances such as tuyere blockage, excessive refractory wear and limits in the oxygen enrichment levels of the blast air. The knowledge acquired on high-pressure gas injection technology as well as the invention of the concentric tuyere for steelmaking led to the development of the Air Liquide Shrouded Injector (ALSI) technology for copper and nickel converting. Following a technology demonstration in 1997-98 with four shrouded injectors installed in a Peirce-Smith converter, Falconbridge Limited implemented ALSI Technology on a commercial scale in May 1999 as an integral part of its new Slag Make Converter at Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The paper presents the various aspects of commissioning ALSI Technology, as well as the operating changes and injector design modifications over the five years the shrouded injectors have been in operation.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the tin development potential of the uplands between the Kanuti and Hodzana Rivers from 1978 through 1980. Chemical and petrologic data indicate that local granitic intrusions are generally similar to "tin granites" that contain tin deposits elsewhere. The tin mineral cassiterite (SnO2) was identified in chlorite-rich greisen from the Sithyiemenkat pluton. Greisen zones are located near the intersections of high-angle, linear structural features, and samples contain up to 0.23 pct Sn. One bedrock exposure of greisen is 10 to 15 ft wide. Although some lode mineralization is present, the deeply eroded nature of the region suggests larger tin-bearing cupolas may have existed prior to erosion. Extensive stream gravel deposits have not been affected by glaciation, and potential exists for placer tin deposits. Especially favorable is a large semiclosed basin drained by the Kanuti Kilolitna River. Heavy mineral concentrates collected from surface alluvium in the Kanuti Kilolitna River valley contained up to 51.2 pet Sn (0.02 to 0.4 lb/yd3 Sn), up to 5 pct W, up to 0.4 pct Cb(Nb), and up to 0.1 pct Ta. The concentration of heavy minerals is expected to in- crease with depth. Detailed mapping and extensive surface and subsurface sampling will be needed to quantify the mineral development potential of the lode and placer tin deposits in the uplands.

The copper demand is booming. New epicentres with strong dynamic economic growth have arisen in China and other emerging markets. Furthermore, Europe contributes to higher copper demand due to positive economic growth. China and India are therefore expanding their smelter industries, with the backing of a coordinated policy of global raw material sourcing, which includes investments in raw material deposits and state-run measures to support their international trade and competition. Likewise, Europe faces scarcity of copper raw materials. The copper industry in Europe is historically grown and shows excellence in environmental protection and technical leadership. Recycling has always been an important sector. This reiterates the recycling-know-how which exists in the European sector. However, Europe still relies on importing a considerable amount of raw materials from foreign countries. As a result, the global competition for copper and copper raw materials has increased. Tough competition as regards industrial location and costs, the emergence of corporate concentrations and the use of protectionist trading practices by countries like China and India, which distort the markets, now determine the picture. Hence, a copper smelter in Europe is forced to develop tailor-made concepts to safeguard and improve its international competitive position. It is imperative that this is also flanked by improved conditions on the local level and a European raw material policy which takes account of the changed situation on the world market.

The Stibnite Project is an open pit/cyanide heap leach gold property located in the Yellow Pine mining district of central Idaho. The gold ore is in an oxidized zone of an epithermal deposit which is associated with a fault system related to Tertiary igneous activity of the region. The faults transect a roof pendant of metamorphosed sediments within crystalline rocks of the Idaho Batholith. Seasonal mining is at a rate of 3900 mt/d (4300 st/d) of ore with a 2:l waste to ore ratio. Gold and silver are recovered through a process of cyanidation, carbon adsorption and desorption, and electrowinning. Disposal of the leached ore requires chlorination of the residual cyanide.

One year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. It is the purpose of this paper to describe, in a general way, the construction of these welded roofs and bottoms, and to give their advantages over riveted construction. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. The SILAG Material Tracking System MTS monitors and controls the complete material flow throughout the plant - and even companywide. The customized system developed by Siemens especially for bulk material handling applications enables companies to track bulk material from the mine to the harbor, to the steel mill or to the power plant. All relevant material data is available at every single step of the material’s journey. SILAG is an open, scalable system based on Windows NT / 2000. Using standard interfaces of Windows NT, like API, ODBC, SQL and socket technology, the system is very flexible and can easily be tailored to meet different requirements. SILAG can be used as a stand-alone solution or - if complete plant control and visualization is required - as a component of a fully integrated automation system with the Win CC HMI system and the PCS7 process control. In contrast to conventional material tracking systems, SILAG offers many advantages. - The Material Tracking System is an object oriented, online to the process, linked system. All changes in the plant during operation e.g. selecting another conveyor route, start and stop etc. will be automatically detected and will influence the calculation. - The systems is able to split and blend material (quantity and quality).Measurements of tonnage, volume or quality analysis can be linked online to the system. Each movement of material is monitored by the system and leads to online recalculations of the images and databases. - All material data is based on 3D-stockpile images, which are calculated by an internal mathematical model based on quantity and quality information. - If a laser scanner is available on a stockyard machine it can be taken to update the profile directly from the piles. - Efficient control and report functions are available on each, free selectable point of the total plant.

I. A. Sirel—I would like to ask Mr. Sims what would the preferred hot metal analysis be as far as manganese and silicon are concerned if you used specially made iron for this process instead of basic iron. C. E. Sims (authors' reply)—A preferred composition would contain somewhat less silicon than the basic pig iron used in these experiments. High silicon requires a large lime addition. Lime must be added in sufficient quantity to neutralize the silica formed and to leave an excess for dephosphorization. Manganese presents almost no problem in operation. It is almost completely oxidized and, in burning, develops considerable heat. The evidence indicates, however, that, in continuous commercial operation, there will be an excess of heat produced, and the bath will need to be cooled in some manner as by the addition of scrap or by utilizing the energy for the direct reduction of ore. There do not seem to be any serious limitations on composition of pig iron. One heat was made with an iron containing 2.27 pct silicon and the phosphorus finished at 0.007 pct. In another, the iron contained 0.45 pct phosphorus which was lowered to 0.019 pct. This indicates considerable leeway in composition. D. R. Loughrey—We are all very much interested in the recent discovery of very large deposits of iron ore both in Labrador and in Venezuela. I would like to ask Mr. Sims if the iron ore at either or both of these places is such that it would lend itself to the manufacture of iron suitable for use in the turbohearth. C. E. Sims-—According to my information, those ores are not essentially different from ores now used in this country for making basic pig. They should, therefore, be adaptable to this process. D. I. Brown—You have spoken about the leeway, or spread in analysis of the various irons you can use in the vessel. I would like to have you tell us, if you can, about the different kinds of steels which can be made in such a vessel. For the desulfurization of weak SO2 gas streams, Degussa developed a process using dilute H2SO4 solution containing H2O, instead of conventional gas scrubbing with all solid absorbent medium (limestone, MgO). The process is based on fast reaction of H2O, with SO2 yielding H2SO4 up to 70% strength, depending on off-gas temperature. Compared to the conventional systems with typically < 95% efficiency, independent on the raw gas SO2 concentration, residual SO2 concentrations of less than 20 mg/Nm3 can be easily achieved, corresponding to nearly 100% removal. These features render the H2O, process a very attractive, low capital cost technology to retrofit existing conventional desulfurization plants.

Scale build-up in titanium palladium alloy spent electrolyte heat exchangers in the residue treatment plant commissioned at Risdon, Tasmania in 1971 was shown to be a mixture of manganese dioxide and anhydrite (CaSO4). The manganese dioxide was deposited as a result of thermal decomposition of permanganate ions present in the spent electrolyte. It was shown that deposition of manganese dioxide and associated anhydrite scale could be prevented by prior reduction of permanganate ions to the manganous (Mn++) state by the addition of ferrous ions. In the plant this was conveniently accomplished by injecting into the inlet line to the heat exchangers sufficient zinc plant solution containing ferrous sulfate to decolourise the spent electrolyte. This action prevented deposition of such scale for another 21 years, until the heaters were finally decommissioned in March 1992. Measurements indicated that addition of the reducing solution lowered the anodic potential of the titanium alloy by 200 - 300 mV (depending on the solution resistance), but that it was still +300 to 400 mV with respect to a standard calomel electrode. It was shown that, if necessary, a small impressed current could be applied to provide anodic protection. Before scale deposition was overcome by the addition of ferrous sulfate solution, badly scaled heat exchangers were cleaned by recirculating a solution of hydrogen peroxide in spent electrolyte or dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, after laboratory testing of a variety of possible solvents for the scale. Corrosion tests indicated that attack on the titanium alloy by the acidic peroxide cleaning solution was insignificant.

"An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."

THE Kinta valley in the State of Perak, one of the largest of the Federated Malay States, is probably at the present time the richest alluvial tin-district in the world, Perak producing from 20,000 to 25,000 tons of tin annually, and the Kiuta valley being the chief producer. The valley runs approximately north and south, and is 30 miles long by 12 wide. It is very flat, the mountain-ranges on either side rising abruptly from the plain, that on the east being the great Central range of the peninsula, and that on the west a subsidiary range marked " Kledang " on the map, Fig. 1. The valley is drained by the Kinta river, which rises in the eastern mountain range and flows south to join the Perak river, being joined by numerous streams from both mountain-ranges. The rain-fall is heavy, averaging annually about 90 in. The whole country is covered with dense jungle, except where it has been cleared for mining-operations and a small amount of cultivation. Mining villages are scattered throughout the valley, the chief towns being Kampar, Batu Gajah, Lahat and Ipoh, the latter being the center of the mining-operations. An ideal section of the main geological features of the Kinta valley is given in Fig. 2. The valley is composed of a highly crystalline limestone, usually white in color, sometimes gray; in fact, it may be called marble. It is always highly inclined and often contorted, and in some places is interbedded with shale. On the east side of the valley, near its contact with the granite, it forms a remarkable series of limestone cliffs, which rise in some cases as high as 2,000 ft. above the level of the limestone in the valley. This paper is a case study of an earthen Cofferdam, constructed for a deep excavation at Intake location in river Aaundha, Maharashtra, India. A 12 m (39 ft) deep excavation was made to construct the Intake well. The natural soil profile at this location is clay followed by rock. An earthen Cofferdam of maximum height 7 m (23 ft) was made around the periphery of the excavation. Cofferdam embankment and excavation slopes were analyzed using the finite element software PLAXIS-2D. Clayey sand was proposed as filling material during design, but clayey soil was used for the embankment formation during execution. The embankment was built up to 5m height in July 2017 and completely submerged due to monsoon. In February 2018 embankment height raised to 7m (23 ft) by filling the soil over the existing submerged embankment. After a few days of completion of the Cofferdam construction, the inside slope of the embankment had started sliding due to continuous dewatering. The design and execution of deep excavation with earthen Cofferdam for waterfront structures are challenging. The selection of filling material for embankment formation and dewatering techniques plays a vital role in the safety and stability of the embankments. Although all the safety measures were taken during the design, execution challenges are unpredictable.

In-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT ?IR/IRS) has been extended to study oleate adsorption at a calcite surface. The birefringent and transmission limitations of calcite were overcome by using an appropriately designed optical setup and a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. An adsorption isotherm was determined at pH 9.2 and room temperature. Comparison with the fluorite/oleate adsorption isotherm determined by the same technique indicates that oleate abstraction by calcite can be as much as one order of magnitude larger than that by fluorite. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of the fluorite/oleate surface is greater for equivalent adsorption densities as indicated by contact angle measurements and flotation results. The monolayer region has been confirmed to be chemisorbed oleate at both calcite and fluorite surfaces. Furthermore, multichannel laser Raman spectroscopy (MLRS) showed that chemisorbed oleate at the fluorite surface undergoes a double-bond reaction with oxygen to form an epoxide/polyether complex. Such a reaction, however, could not be detected at the calcite surface. These phenomena are discussed in terms of the intrinsic surface properties of the mineral systems as well as the adsorption density and the cross-linking/polymerization reaction of the adsorbed oleate film.

Interwest Mining Company has been collecting geologic data within the last decade in preparation for underground mining of extensive coal reserves in its Bridger Coal property in southwestern Wyoming. During a preliminary data collection program in 2000, Interwest Mining completed geologic investigations, including surface mapping, drilling, aerial photography, rock testing, and limited groundwater investigations. Core from 12 exploration boreholes in the area of interest was tested to determine the mechanical properties of the coal seam and the immediate roof and floor for evaluation of the feasibility of underground mining. Geologic investigations identified the presence of one 7-to-17-ft-thick coal seam throughout the reserve under 1400 ft of cover. During a geotechnical feasibility study in 2002, the authors reviewed available data while completing comparative analyses identifying critical deficiencies in these data. The study projected moderate-to-difficult mining conditions, considering the weak nature of near-seam strata and depth of cover, and thus recommended limiting the longwall reserves to an overburden depth of less than 900 ft. These shallow remaining reserves were located at depths within regional mining experience to justify longwall mining methods. Based on a critical examination of available data, Bridger proceeded with more detailed data collection to improve understanding of the depositional and structural setting of the reserve, hydrogeologic conditions, overburden strength, and premining stress conditions. Additional data was collected during 2003 and 2004 field programs. Since 2003, Bridger has had the opportunity to observe ground behavior in a series of up to 1200-1600-ft- long rectangular openings created during highwall mining. These narrow unsupported openings remained stable in the short term in large areas but the overburden subsided locally in the long-term depending on geologic and panel layout designs. These localized subsidence events allowed an examination of in-situ coal strength based on back analyses of stress. The unextracted highwall areas near Ramp 17 provided an ideal location to access the underground reserves using a 6-entry set of mains. The existing north-south oriented longwall layout for the Bridger Coal was selected by Bridger to maximize resource recovery from the D41 reserves while considering operational and geotechnical constraints. At 45-degrees deviation from preexisting joints and mild horizontal stress field, this orientation was considered beneficial for overall stability while using both sets of joints for facilitating the caving process. The present layout utilizes pillars on 80- to 90- by 200-ft centers, 17-ft entry spans and 750-ft wide longwall panels (Figure 1). Gate pillars are on wide spacings and are intended to act as abutment-abutment pillars to limit strata deformation over the gateroads during longwall mining.

Keywords: copper, concentrate drying, steam dryer, dryers By placing additional demands on energy and gas flow, the moisture content of a copper concentrate has an adverse effect on the smelting process. Different drying technologies, such as directly heated rotary dryers, flash dryers, and steam dryers, are available to solve this problem. The energy requirements of and off-gas generated from different dryer types are compared. The performance of the steam dryer was found to be superior to that of the others. In particular, the rotary steam dryer and its benefits are discussed. Structural properties confer an advantage on the rotary steam dryer, for wear on tube elements is eliminated, and drying efficiency is improved. If steam is available, the rotary steam dryer is an excellent choice for drying copper concentrates.
