PROBABLY the majority of red brass sand castings are judged merely on the basis of outside appearance and the quality of machined surfaces. Many castings, however, must individually withstand a hydraulic or air-pressure test before being accepted as parts of more complicated machin-ery. Finally, there remains a comparatively small group of castings intended for uses of considerable responsibility where only the highest possible characteristics of the metal are acceptable, and for these specially cast test bars are required. The shape of the cast piece from which the test bar must be detached varies greatly from one country to another. The test bar as specified in the American Society for Testing Materials Specification B62-36 is widely used by the American foundry industry. The actual test piece is at the bottom of the cast block and has a riser about six times its mass. It is obvious that this test bar has an advantage over the actual casting. The latter rarely possesses a riser of as much as 30 per cent of its own weight and that riser cannot generally be located in so convenient a manner. Therefore, the characteristics of the test bar cannot possibly correspond to those of the casting itself. It must be taken into consideration that red brass if melted and cast in the best possible manner may show a tensile strength of 40,000 lb. per sq. in. with 35 per cent elongation in 2 in. Such a test bar would indicate that the metal was nearly perfect from the viewpoint of its gas and inclusion content. Barring some accidental defect, a casting cor-responding to such a test bar could be accepted as being quite sound. However, actual specifications do not demand such high characteristics; indeed, few specifications require over 30,000 lb. per sq. in. and 20 per cent elongation, while one Federal specification demands merely 27,000 lb. per sq. in. strength and 15 per cent elongation. Introduction The refining of precipitate is the final stage of all the processes involved in gold mining and cyanide milling, by which the precious metal is at last obtained in a concentrated form, which can be accurately valued and marketed. Possibly one ought to say, conveniently shipped, for accuracy in valuation depends in many instances on a toughening treatment given the bars as received at the Mint so as to obtain a homogeneous metal that lends itself to representative sampling; which, of course, entails a surcharge on the regular Mint charges for the extra work necessarily undertaken. There are several methods of refining zinc-gold precipitate, each with its advocates; the method employed depending not always on the quality of the bullion produced but on the local exigencies of the case in point. These methods are more or less detailed in various textbooks and it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss them, but to confine ourselves to the specific case as stated in the title of the paper. At the outset, it behooves the writer to express his thanks to Mr. Brigham, the General Manager of the Hollinger Mines, for the kindly consideration and encouragement given in developing this process. This will be better understood when one considers the immense values involved, tending towards conservatism in practice, and making one chary of radical innovations. This process has been in satisfactory operation now for about two and-a half years, during which time over twenty-five million dollars value in fine gold has been produced, so that it may be reasonably held that the process is successful.

For many years underground mining in the Sydney Coalfield has suffered from the effects of high horizontal stresses. It is only in the last 15 years that they have come to be recognized, understood, predicted and even avoided. This paper relates experiences in three coal mines in three different seams in the Sydney Coalfield. The effect of the direction of the principal horizontal stress on the direction of drivage of gate roads, access roadways and longwalls is described. Results of a monitoring program to measure the change of magnitude and direction of the principal horizontal stress in the gate roads as a result of longwall mining are also presented as well as the effect of the direction of principal horizontal stress on the shape of sandstone/gas outburst cavities.

Selection of the most suitable roadheaders (boom type tunnelling machines) for the galleries/tunnels to be excavated in certain rock and under known project conditions is important for avoiding problems during application. This research utilized a multiple attribute decision-making method and studied how this will be applied for the selection of boom-type excavation machines. The Cayirhan Coal Basin was used for selecting roadheaders using the analytical hierarchy process, which is one of the multiple attribute decision-making methods. To conclude, this study reveals that decision-making methods can be used in the process of selecting roadheaders for the excavation of galleries. Oil operators engaged in drilling on the Continental Shelf of Louisiana and Texas are in agreement that adverse weather and wave action are two of the greatest hazards to the safety and efficiency of their work. It was ami-pated when the offshore operations commenced that such would be the case, and experience to date has verified this assumption. Because atmospheric conditions and wave action involve tremendous amounts of energy it is highly unlikely that it will be possible to control any but the most localized weather and wave phenomena within the foreseeable future. Thus. as long as the offshore operations involve the movement of small craft and barges over exposed waters, and the transfer of personnel and heavy equipment from these craft to either fixed structures or larger craft at close quarters, the weather and wave problem will remain. Taking into consideration the persistence of the wave and weather problem and the improbability of achieving a direct solution, the Humble Oil & Refining Company, in planning its offshore campaign investigated the possibility of forecasting wave and weather conditions in order to provide warnings of dangerous conditions and increase efficiency in day-to-day planning of work. It was recognized that predictions of wave and weather conditions based on meteorology and oceanography, both geophysical sciences, are not 100 per cent accurate and application of forecasts in the offshore work was dependent on whether they provided information which was sufficiently greater in accuracy than the layman's guess to be worth the expenditure involved. During World War 11. meteorology and oceanography were used with success in reducing danger resulting from environmental conditions and increasing efficiency of operations exposed to the elements. This success was partially the result. of improvement in the scientific techniques involved and the procurement and distribution of observational data, and partially due to the large scope of the military operations which meant that a reduction of losses of a relatively small percentage of the total cost amounted to a large figure expressed in terms of dollars. Since the offshore drilling involves an extremely large financial investment, it was considered that the experience of the Armed Services in successfully employing meteorology and oceanography might be duplicated in the oil industry. In addition. the oil industry's successful experience in utilizing seismology, geology, and terrestrial magnetism; all geophysical sciences, indicated that meteorology and oceanography, also of the family of geophysical sciences and sharing their scientific assets and liabilities, might be profitably put to use. Since the immediate problem involving the sciences of meteorology and oceanography in the offshore campaign is wave action, a program was inaugurated within the Humble Oil & Refining Company during June 1947. the purpose of which was to ascertain the applicability and limitations of wave forecasting in the offshore campaign. A summary of the effective wave forecasting techniques developed during the war was prepared in the form of a forecasting manual for the Continental Shelf off Grand Isle, Louisiana, by Bates and Glenn. After completion of this manual, experimental forecasts were prepared daily over a two-month period by Graham and Thompson to determine the accuracy of the forecasts. It was considered that the accuracy of the experimental forecasts justified a more extensive test under actual operating conditions in the offshore work and the firm of A. H. Glenn and Associates was set up under the sponsorship of the Humble Oil & Refining Company to work with the Humble Grand Isle District in providing forecasts of wave and weather conditions over a one-year period. This paper discusses the service now provided to the Grand Isle District, its applicability and limitations. TYPE OF FORECASTS REQUIRED It was apparent before the commence-mence of the forecasting service that a specialized type of forecast was required. Many of the weather elements of interest to the general public, such as rain and temperature, are of minor concern to offshore operators. On the other hand, such elements as wave height and wind speed and direction are of great concern in the offshore operations since variations in wave height of a few feet in the critical range divide safe from hazardous working conditions. To be of utility. a forecasting service for the offshore work must provide detailed forecasts of the elements which affect the operation. With this in mind, it was decided that forecasts would include the following information: average wave heights to the nearest foot, wind speeds within a range of approximately 5 miles per hour, and wind directions within 221 degrees. Since the procedure for forecasting these elements involves thorough analysis of weather data, it was decided to include a generalized forecast of weather conditions such as rain and cloud cover, although these are of secondary importance.

Recent advances in solid-state, field portable, fast framing video camera systems and PC based frame capture hardware now allow blast imaging up to loo0 frames per second. Up to 8 seconds of data can be stored directly into the unit, downloaded to a PC or archived to a standard VCR without data compression. Since no film processing is involved, motion analysis can be performed instantly and on-site within a few minutes. This paper will describe the design features and applications of the KineView 1256P system and compare these with the analogous aspects of film based cameras.

As etapas eleitas para estudo foram os setup’s das atividades de inicio (encaixe) e final (desencaixe) do processo, atividades não automatizadas, com maior intervenção humana que sofrem interferência direta dos tempos e métodos praticados pelos operadores. Utilizando o método dedutivo, tendo como ferramenta de apoio, a pesquisa bibliográfica para fundamentação teórica e realizadas observações de campo, determinou-se os melhores tempos para realização das atividades visando a sua otimização. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo modificar o método operacional nesta Linha de Inspeção visando o aumento da eficiência produtiva, aumentando a geração dos laminados à frio. O trabalho comprovou que a mudança do modo operacional proporciona um incremento de 8% na produção (1.800t/mes).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to determine the influence of mining machine-mounted scrubbers on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery with a model mining machine that simulated airflow created by a dust scrubber. During the tests, ultrasonic anemometers were used to measure airflow speed and direction at several locations near the face. For the same test conditions, methane was released from the face and gas concentrations were measured at 21 locations above the machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed and direction are correlated with scrubber airflow and the measured methane distribution above the mining machine. The research results showed that operation of machine-mounted scrubbers improved face ventilation when blowing ventilation is used by increasing both the intake flow and the quantity of air reaching the face.

"The measured strength of an explosive depends to a certain extent on which it is determined. An earlier investigation showed the relative propulsive strength of dynamites as determined in one type of apparatus, ballistic pendulum.4 The aim of this paper is to precept strength data on these same dynamites determined in another type of apparatus, the Trauzl lead block, and to compare the results with those of the ballistic pendulum. Trauzl lead block have been in use many years for the determination of thy strength of explosives, under moderate confinement.5 The common practice is to shoot 10 grams of explosive, in tinfoil wrapper,- and then to measure the volume of the cavity produced by the shot. The volume of the original borehole is deducted from the gross expansion and sometimes a correction is made for the expansion produced by the detonator. Dry sand is used for stemming the charge.It has been found that the expansion in Trauzl blocks is not strictly proportional to the charge. Naoum5 believed that for scientific accuracy the charge should undoubtedly be regulated to give the same average expansion for each sample tested, but for expansions of 200 to 400 cubic, centimeters the deviation from proportionality is not sufficient to give results appreciably in error.Neubner7 found that the proportionality curve is tangent to the charge-expansion curve at about 300 cubic centimeters expansion, provided that no deductions are made for the volume of the original borehole or the effect of the detonator; the total or gross expansion is proportional to the charge between expansions of 250 to 350 cubic centimeters without serious error."

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. "Respirable quartz cytotoxicity, as measured by erythrocyte hemolysis and pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase in vitro, is neutralized by boiling in water in glass test tubes for 10 to 40 minutes. The cytotoxicity is reduced to near zero by boiling l to IO mg quartz per milliliter water. For greater concentrations of quartz in water the hemolytic potential after 40 minutes of boiling approaches that of native quartz. Replacing the medium with fresh water midway through boiling results in full detoxification through 20 mg quartz per milliliter water. Pre-boiling the medium with silica reduces the detoxification effect. Detoxification persists after mild drying at l 10°C for 8 hours, and persists after three days of resuspension in water at room temperature.INTRODCJCTIONResearch underway to determine interactions of quartz and other mineral dust surfaces with pulmonary fluids and alveolar macrophages in culture led to the observation that when dusts were autoclaved in aqueous suspension, their cytotoxic effects on macrophages were suppressed, in some cases fully and even after several days incubation with the cells. This finding was in direct contradiction to earlier results from both short term macrophage lysosmal enzyme release assays, as well as longer term cytotoxicity assays from macrophages in culture; in those studies, dusts were steam autoclaved at 121°C with no liquid water but with steam present. 1.2 However detoxification under boiling conditions has been reported in other research. 3 It was decided to use the hemolysis assay to further investigate these findings, because of its sensitivity simplicity and cost.RESCULTS AND DISCCISSIONRespirable quartz dust used in this study was taken from a stock of crystalline silica, Min-U-Sil; obtained from Pennsylvania Sand Glass Corporation, fractionated in air with a particle classifier. The small size fraction retained for use was 80% less than S micrometer particle diameter, with an area equivalent median diameter of 1.24 micrometers as estimated by automated image analysis. The silica was at least 98.S mass percent silica as determined by X-ray energy spectrometric analysis; and the crystalline form was alpha-quartz as determined by X-ray diffraction. It's specific surface area was 3.97 square meters per gram as determined by nitrogen adsorption isotherm methods. I"

he possibility that carbon may be soluble in copper to a limited extent has bten recognized for over a century. The quantitative investigation of this problem, however, requires more sensitive techniques than have formerly been available. Three recent developments have made possible more accurate determinations: the vacuum-fusion method of analysis, the production of copper of high purity and the availability of high-purity refractories, particularly graphite. In addition to its obvious theoretical interest, the problem of carbon solubility in copper is of practical importance. In the production of copper and of high-copper alloys, carbonaceous covers are freauerltlv used. If even minute amounts of carbon are dissolved, insoluble carbon oxide gases will be formed when such metals are poured under oxidizing conditions. A mechanism of this kind could well be one of the principal causes of gas porosity in casting copper-base products. Review of Literature In 1823 Vivian1 raised the question as to whether copper by overpoling becomes "combined with a minute portion of carbon." Karsten2 asserted, in 1832, that carbon reduces the high-temperature strength of pure copper, so that when the carbon content has reached 0.2 per cent the metal will be brittle at a dark red heat. According to Karsten, carbon contents of 0.05 per cent make it difficult to hot-work copper. He also reported that the specific gravity of copper is 8.8969 and that it increases to 8.9258 if the copper is cemented with carbon and then melted. He emphasized the difficulty of determining analytically the small amounts of carbon present in copper. The metal was removed by wet methods and the residue considered as carbon. At Percy's request, Dick,3 in 1856, carried out various working tests on copper that had been ill prolonged contact with carbon, and found that the working properties of the metal had not been affected. He also attempted to determine the presence of carbon analytically. In one experiment the copper was dissolved and the residue was fused with litharge, and in another essentially a combustion analysis was made on a copper sample. In a final experiment, a sample was dissolved and the residue subsequently subjected to a combustion analysis. Indications of as much as 0.005 per cent carbon were found, but Dick considered his work inconclusive largely because of the possible interference of sulphur. The practice of using acid-lined converters at the plant of the Old Dominion, Copper Mining & Smelting Co. was discontinued early in January, 1913, and replaced by basic-lined converters. The new equipment consists of one electrically operated 12-ft. upright converter stand and two basic-lined shells for same. These shells are provided with twenty-four 1 1/4-in. tuyeres. The mouths are 5 ft. in diameter. Owing to the fact that there is no bedding system or other large storage capacity between the mine and the smelter, the furnaces must handle as fast as produced ore and concentrates, which may vary considerably from day to day, both in tonnage and copper content. Consequently the converter is often crowded to its utmost capacity by the frequent fluctuations in the daily matte supply. From the foregoing, it will be seen that in no way can the 'converter be favored by running light charges or by transferring to it from other stands in operation. Neither can it regularly be allowed to cool between blows, and only occasionally can it be run at as low a temperature as might be wished. No copper precipitate or other foreign material high in copper is available to help out the tonnage. Repairs and alterations or the removal of defective tuyeres must wait until such time as a slight falling off in.the matte supply allows the converting operations to ease up. These variable conditions all combine to interfere with the systematic operating of the converter. An experimental investigation of the precipitation behavior of the Dy2O3 containing slag during cooling was carried out in this work. The slag with composition 45 wt% SiO2—49 wt% CaO—6 wt% Dy2O3 was equilibrated at 1673, 1773 and 1873 K for 24 h in an argon atmosphere, and then quenched in water to determine the phase relations. The composition and microstructure of the equilibrated phases of the systems were determined by EPMA/WDS. The precipitation behavior of the REEs containing phases during cooling was studied by using an in-situ confocal scanning laser microscope (CLSM) observation technique combined with an infrared imaging furnace heating (IIF). Data resulting from this work aims to support further investigation on separation of rare earths from metallurgical slags.

The Investigation shows that there are six coal beds of major importance in McDowell County from the standpoint of present production - Pocahontas No. 3, Pocahontas No. 4, Pocahontas No. 5, Sewall, Beckley, and Pochontas No. 6 - and five beds of minor importance - Iaeger, Douglas, Welch, Pocahontas, No. 9, and Eagle. The Pocahontas No. 3 bed contains the largest remaining, known reserves. 2. Known measured, and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 174 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,217 Trillion short tons as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 1,731 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these area, such reserves should be added to he total estimated reserves.

The performance of Knelson Concentrators (KC) used in gravity gold circuits often rely on manufacturers recommendations for selecting operating parameters such as, fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. These parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics such as, size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. Particles entering a KC experience a centrifugal acceleration due to the high bowl rotational speeds. The required centripetal force to maintain a circular orbit is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the Bagnold?s force arising from the particle/particle collisions. When the fluidising water flow rate is low particles move towards the outer rim of the bowl forming a packed bed within the grooves. On the other hand, if the fluidizing water flowrate is high the bed expands and some particles would move towards the centre of the bowl and gets carried to the tailings stream, thereby reducing the amount of material retained within the grooves of the bowl. Based on a force balance on a particle captured within the KC, a criterion which can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It has been shown that this criterion may be used to demarcate the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state depending on the fluidizing water flowrate. By identifying the conditions for the optimal expansion of the bed comprising different constituent mineral particles, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. It was also observed that the accumulation of valuable mineral in the bowl takes place by the displacement of the gangue particles in the bed by the incoming heavy mineral particles. The kinetics of this segregation process was also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum which could be used to identify the optimal cycle time. Discussion of the paper of S. E. Bretherton, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1481 to 1487. S. E., BRETHERTON, San Francisco, Cal.:-Since preparing my paper, our chemist, F. L. Wilson, has been experimenting with Leadville, Colo., oxidized zinc ore and Leadville zinc sulphides containing lead, operating upon 40-1b. lots at a time. His results on Leadville sulphides are as follows: The raw ore contained a trace of gold, 5.04 oz. of silver, 19.1 per cent of zinc, and 7.24 per cent of lead. After roasting the ore contained a trace of gold, 5.72 oz. of silver, 0.75 per cent of copper, 21.7 per cent of zinc, and 8.29 per cent of lead. The loss in weight by leaching was 38.8 per cent. The extraction was 42.8 per cent of the copper, 80.6 per cent of the zinc, 7.1 per cent of the lead, 0.64 per cent of the silver, and no gold. The little .silver that is extracted would be thrown down with the copper when precipitating it from the zinc and both thrown hack into the residue to be smelted. There would be no trouble in smelting the residue with nearly all the sulphur eliminated and containing less than 7 per cent. of zinc. On zinc carbonates containing silicates the results are not satisfactory. H. O. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :¬The paper by Mr. Bretherton upon the application of ammonia and carbonic acid to the recovery of zinc as oxide from roasted sulphide ore is of interest to me, as the first installation of the Schnabel process for the extraction of zinc from a mixture of zinc oxide, lead oxide (with some cupric oxide), and pellets of enriched lead, produced in steaming liquated zinc-silver-lead crust of the Parkes process, was made at Lautenthal, Harz mountains, where I was chemist. In that capacity I carried out numerous experiments on the Schnabel process, was active in the erecting of the plant, and later had charge of it. After the Lautenthal plant had been in operation for some time a similar one was built at Hoboken-les-Anvers, but both have been abandoned, as the wet process could not compete with the distillation of the liquated zinc-silver-lead crust, now used universally in the Parkes process.
