In 1984 a new Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) was commenced by the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ); the new program was in response to the withdrawal of the Bureau of Mineral Resources from regional mapping. Areas for mapping were selected in northern and south-eastern Queensland on the basis of potential for mineral discoveries, level of company interest, inaccuracies in the first edition mapping and interests of other organisations (government and universities) in joint projects.Geological provinces of particular interest in northern Queensland are the Hodgkinson Basin, parts of the Georgetown Inlier not covered by earlier BMR-GSQ mapping, Broken River Embayment, Burdekin Basin, Lolworth-Ravenswood Block, Campwyn Block and Anakie Inlier. The 1:250,000 sheets covering these areas of interest are shown in Figure 1 including those already completed, those in progress and those planned for future investigation.A flow chart showing the various phases for RGMP projects is shown in Figure 2. Data collection has two facets: (i) field recording and (ii) office work including air photo interpretation, study of company reports, literature research, petrography and various laboratory studies. Two main strands of information collected are represented by a data base and compilation sheets. Compilation sheets are generally at 1:25,000 scale and are available for purchase. The current data base is very fragmentary and can be accessed only by direct contact with the relevant geologist or via written reports. A more accessible field data base is in the process of being introduced this year; this field data base (REGMAP) is based on standardised data recording and computer storage.

Integrated Plant concepts based on COREX® offer solutions for future challenges of the iron- and steelmaking industry, which include: economical hot metal production; efficient and highly economic export gas utilization (power generation, DRI production, syngas production for chemical products); lower raw material cost, higher raw material availability; environmental friendly high grade steel production. The economic evaluation of different COREX® gas based plant concepts in comparison with the traditional blast furnace route shows that the COREX® technology is highly competitive in the challenging iron and steel producing environment.

As part of the regeneration of the centre of Dublin, a multi-functional development is being constructed on the site of the historic Smithfield Fruit Market. The site is being developed in three phases, and includes one of the deepest basements (10m) constructed in Ireland to date. Until the recent improved economic climate, there has been little requirement for deep basements in Dublin, and this is the first to be constructed entirely within fluvio-glacial gravels and boulders. The difficult ground conditions led to the adoption of a diaphragm wall solution to ensure a watertight construction. Tie-back anchorages are utilised in the temporary case, and the wall is propped by floor slabs in the permanent case. Where required by high bedrock levels, the diaphragm wall is dowelled into limestone bedrock to ensure toe stability. The recorded lateral movement of the wall is significantly below that calculated by numerical analysis. Temporary bentonite cut-off walls were installed to divide the site into discrete sections. The basement was constructed as a tanked structure, and is subject to uplift water pressure. Passive tension minipiles provides an innovative alternative to the standard stressed anchorage solution. Deposited millions of years ago in irregular paleokarstic channels, Jamaica’s extensive bauxite deposits provide good quality ore for alumina production and subsequent aluminum smelting. Bauxite mining operations are critical to the Jamaican economy. It accounts for a large percentage of Jamaica’s export earnings. Bauxite production in Jamaica accounts for about 10% of the world’s output each year. Bauxite deposits in Jamaica lie close to the surface. They can be extracted using standard surface mining techniques. The deposits occur in scattered pockets across the country’s rugged landscape. So it was necessary for two of the country’s major mining and refining operations to implement cost effective methods for the acquisition and management of bauxite reserves and surface ownership distribution rights.

The effects of increasing hydrogen content, introducing a notch, and changing the strain rate on properties of titanium and one of its alloys were investigated over a range of testing temperatures from —196° to 200°C. Both high purity and commercial purity A-55 titanium were used as representative a materials, while a commercial Ti-8 pct Mn alloy was used for an a-P alloy. It was found possible to analyze the data, using the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature concept. Increasing hydrogen, the presence of a notch, and increasing the testing speed raised the transition temperature for the a materials. The presence of hydrogen and notches raised the transition temperature of the a-B alloy also. However, increasing the testing speed generally decreased the transition temperature of the a-p alloy. IN previous papers, the authors have shown that hydrogen is most detrimental to the notch-bend impact toughness of a-titanium' and to the tensile ductility of a-B titanium alloys.' These general effects have been confirmed by Kessler and co-workers," and by Kotfila and Erbin." Kessler showed that the slower strain rate in notch-rupture tests was a more sensitive measure of hydrogen embrittle-ment of a-B alloys than the tensile test. In the present paper the authors cover, with tensile and notch-bend tests, the effect of testing speed, notches, and testing temperature on hydrogen em-brittlement. High purity and commercial purity titanium, examples of u materials, and a commercial a-,f3 Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to correlate the factors producing embrittlement. Materials The high purity titanium for this investigation was obtained by arc-melting crystal bar from Foote Mineral Co. into 1 Ib ingots. As-cast hardnesses for these ingots ranged from 60 to 90 Brinell. The arc-melted ingots were forged to % in. diam rods at 1470°F. These rods were swaged to & in. diam at room temperature prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The commercial A-55 titanium and the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were obtained from Rem-Cru Titanium Inc., as % in. diam rod. The A-55 titanium was hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam at 1300°F prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The a-p C-11OM alloy was hydrogenated prior to hot swaging to 1/4 in. roc1 at 1300°F. Hydrogenation prior to fabrication permitted testing of the a-P alloy in the equilibrated and stabilized condition. The equilibration and stabilization treatment used was an air anneal for 1 hr at 1300°F, followed by furnace cooling to 1100°F and then air cooling. Hydrogenation was done in a Sieverts apparatus described previously.' The hydrogenation treatment consisted of heating for 1/4 to 1/2 hr at 820 °C in purified hydrogen, slow cooling to 680"C, holding 1 hr for homogenization, and rapid cooling to room temperature. Intended hydrogen levels for the a-tita-nium materials were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 430 ppm. For the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy, the intended hydrogen levels were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 1100 ppm. The material for the 0.5 atomic pct level of hydrogen was vacuum annealed prior to hydrogenation to increase the accuracy of the addition. Vacuum annealing to remove hydrogen consisted of heating for 6 hr at 820°C, and resulted in a hydrogen content of about 10 to 15 ppm. When hydrogen contents were above 0.5 atomic pct—100 ppm—the hydrogen was added without prior vacuum annealing.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a reconnaissance of the less accessible parts of the Beluga River coalfield in August 1957 to determine, if possible, which areas were most favorable for developing large reserves of coal suitable for open-pit mining. Several outcrops of subbituminous coal were observed within an area about 30 miles long and 3 miles wide; neither the length nor the width of the coal-bearing area was delineated by the examination. Coal beds 30 feet thick or more outcrop at two places, and beds 5 to 20 feet thick or more outcrop fairly abundantly along the Beluga River and its tributaries The coal measures appear to occur in a series of folds. The overburden comprises glacial gravels and poorly cemented sandstones and ranges from 20 to 400 feet in depth. Few partings were seen in any of the coal beds. Samples ranged in calorific value from 6,240 to 8,246 B. t. u. on an as-received basis. Adequate water is available for stripping by hydraulic methods.

This account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects—namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle.' This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture) the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.

Mining Ventures are considered as high risk projects and therefore managing the risks is inevitable. Risk assessment is an important part of the complex process of risk management, hence applying appropriated and practical methods for ranking the risks associated with projects, can help to perform a better risk management. In this research the applicability of using Techniques for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for risk ranking in an underground mine, extracting by block caving method, was studied. Via this method, the risk associated with reserve estimation ranked as the first while in conventional method (P-I Matrix method) located in the sixteenth. Also there were significant differences in ranks of the other risks. Considering the more criteria, with different weights, in comparison with conventional methods, the results comprised from TOPSIS method are more reliable. By implementing this method risks are ranked better and more realistic and consequently then will be managed more efficient.

"The Republic of Colombia on December 30, 1919, enacted a new petroleum law. The Act is expressly limited to mineral oil, natural gas, bitumen, wax and fossilized resin and to asphalt intended for export.The law is not only intended to encourage local investors, but to attract foreign capitalists for oil development. Provision is made for a special edition ion of the law in such languages as the Government may deem necessary to give it extensive circulation within the country and abroad. The published editions must contain the provisions of the law relating to alienship and naturalization.All public lands, or what are termed unclaimed lands, are open to flee prospecting for the purpose of discovering the deposits named in the law, A prospector must obtain from the Government a, license which binds him to deliver to the Government topographic plans of the lands prospected, together with reports of their prospective yielding capacity. This license does not vest the li¬censee with any preferential right for contracting or leasing and may be drawn by the Government at any time.If a discovery is made by a licensee of any of the deposits named and he desires to exploit the same, he must present a memorial or application to the Ministry of Public Works, stating:- (a) the location and municipal district in which deposit beds are found; (b) boundaries of the zone of exploitation, which shall not be more than 5,000 or less than 1,000 hectares; (c) the names and nationality of all persons for whom the lease is sought and the action and time within which,they propose to make the exploitation; (d) the name of the corporation and its legal representatives with their residences; (e) if an alien, he must state his willingness to comply with the law relative to alienship and naturalization; (f) agreement to abide by all of the provieions of the law with regard to Government supervision, payment of taxes, rate of lease and causes of forfeiture; (g) the rate of rent or royalty that the applicant offers to pay, together with any other circumstances that may make the proposed lease advantageous to the Nation."

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 1/4 to 1/2 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100' to 300' in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.

The synthesis and characterization of silica polyamine composites modified with a variety of sulfur containing ligands is described. The two most successful ligands in terms of sulfur in-corporation and mercury capture are ethylene sulfide and carbon disulfide. The ethylene sulfide forms either an amino mercaptane or a polysulfide upon reaction with amino groups on the composite. The carbon disulfide undoubtedly forms a dithiocarbamate functional group upon reaction of the amino group under basic conditions. Both materials posses excellent capture kinetics and capacities for mercury, Once captured, the mercury is extremely difficult to remove from the composite materials, even with concentrated acids, and they easily pass the TCLP test. The materials are compared with related thioether modified silica polyamine composites and appropriate potential applications are discussed.

This paper reports on an investigation undertaken to determine the exhaust gas temperatures of operating underground mining equipment. The effectiveness of platinum catalytic purifiers is discussed. From exhaust temperatures, it is concluded that LHD engines are highly loaded, haulage truck engines are moderately loaded and utility vehicle engines are lightly loaded.

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper reviews developments in water spray dust control technology and recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in under- ground coal and non-coal mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location and orientation of nozzles, desirable operating water pressure, and associated filtration system.

A thermodynamic model for determining the surface tension of molten slag by considering the surface tension and molar volume of the pure oxide component, and their ionic radii was extended to the slag bearing high TiO2 (varying from 80 to 67%) at 1973 K. The iso-surface tension curves for the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3 ternary system at 1973 K are almost parallel to the FeOTi2O3 line. TiO2 plays a role of surface-active solute, and its surface-active effect is attenuating with increasing the TiO2 content. The iso-surface tension curve shifts away from the TiO2 corner, indicating that the surface tension of the ternary slag decreases along with the addition of SiO2. The reasons include the addition of SiO2 with lower surface tension and the decrease of the total ion moment at the surface. Both CaO and MgO can bring about that the iso-surface tension curve shifts towards the TiO2 corner, indicating that the surface tension of the ternary slag increases along with the addition of CaO or MgO. CaO has a more pronounced effect on increasing the surface tension of the ternary slag than MgO at an equimolar amount addition. The increase of the surface tension results from both the compositional change and the variation of the slag structure.

WHAT Colonel Dwight says regarding the treat-ment of oxidized ores1 holds true also of the silver-lead smelting operations in Utah. The ore sought for was such as would, with appropriate fluxes, yield slag, and "lead bullion," as the lead reduced from the ore and carrying its gold and silver, was called. No matte, and probably little or no speiss, was yielded, and hence there was nothing to roast, either of ore or matte. But, by 1880, when I first took hold in smelting, there was quite a production of matte at the works of the Ger-mania Smelting and Refining Co., Utah, because, by that time, ores containing some pyrite and galena were being smelted. This was due, as at the Grant Works, Denver, to the more attractive price paid for the treatment of such ores. The matte, containing about 5 per cent. copper, was accordingly heap-roasted and returned to the blast furnace for the recovery of its contained metals. By this time there had been built a long-bedded, hand-rabbled reverber-atory roaster with a hearth of about 40 by 10 ft. in size, and in this matte and ore, crushed at the sampling mill, was treated. When, in 1892, I took control of this works, called& now the Germania Lead Works, three other roasters had been added, but the prac-tice of heap-roasting continued. This had the merit of needing no equipment, and of doing good work, because the pieces that were imperfectly roasted went back upon the next roast heap. At this time, when some suitable lump ore was obtainable, I roasted in heaps, in a satisfactory way. By 1892, the Bruckner cylinder roaster had been installed, which, compared with the reverberatory roaster, reduced labor. As such a cylinder revolves, a talus of ore is formed within it and at the same time fresh surfaces are exposed to the air, but the trouble was that the air did not reach to the bottom of the cylinder. This we corrected by placing a steam jet at the fire-box end, to project the air down-ward upon this stagnant ore, thus increasing the speed and completeness of roasting without at the same time increasing dust formation. The firing, if skilfully done, gave a somewhat sintered product, but with certain ores a slight access of heat over the normal would cause accretions to form within the cylinder near the fire end. These could be cut off by running back the fire box and barring off the crusts. It was in 1895 that the Bruckner cylinders at the Arkansas Valley plant, Leadville, were giving unsatis-factory service and I was called in to investigate. The steam jet was put in use as at the Germania Lead Works, but we found that, due to the altitude (10,500 ft.), combustion was feebler than at sea level or even at 4000 to 5000 ft. Later it appears, as Colonel Dwight states, that R. D. Rhodes and Mots sought to increase the air supply by admission through perforated tiles, but the trouble was due to the air itself.

Charge malfunction problems result from rather universal damage mechanisms and are widespread throughout surface and underground delay blasting. Recent refinements in instrumentation technology reveal a range of charge performance difficulties, not just outright misfires. This report focuses on the U.S. Bureau of Mines research regarding desensitization and malfunction of delay detonators and cap-sensitive explosives, utilized in underground coal mining. Delay blasting generates tremendous shock waves and rifting forces that fracture and heave the surrounding stratum. The shock waves from charge explosions propagate outward in all directions through the coal, impacting neighboring charges with later delays. The impact phenomena have debilitating effects, causing degrees of reduced charge performance ranging from misfires or weak detonations to out-ofsequence detonations. Impaired charges react poorly. fracture less coal, and produce fumes with higher toxicity. Coal-mine, underwater, and simulator tests were conducted to m3re thoroughly understand the shock-wave and rift-compression damage mechanisms. Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines partially resolved the malfunction problem by demonstrating the feasibility of formulating a rugged explosive, which could pass the requisite tests for certifying an underground coal-mine explosive. The charge formulation was not certified only because it lost initiation sensitivity too quickly from natural aging and had to be rebatched to finish the testing.

"INTRODUCTION Although many investigators have provided information on the strength and other properties of concrete the published literature cites few data on the effect of mixing cement with acid mine waters or on acid resistance of concrete in contact with mine waters. Most of the reported work on the effect of impure waters has dealt with the resistance of cement specimens to ""sulfate waters,"" that is, waters or soils with a relatively high sodium sulfate content. The ""Merriman test"" is used commonly to determine the corrosion resistance of cements for 28 days, but it does not seem certain that a cement having a high sulfate resistance in the Merriman or similar tests necessarily will show correspondingly great resistance to the sulfates of iron and, particularly, to sulfuric acid, which usually are present in acid mine waters. Extensive use of cement mortar for laying up masonry stoppings in coal and other mines and for constructing concrete mine haulageways and shaft linings, coal-storage and other retaining walls, highway bridges, culverts, and many other types of construction where it is difficult to obtain fresh water for mixing or where the structures are later exposed to contact with acid waters makes it important to know the effect of these conditions on cement and whether there is a cement better suited for such work than ordinary portland cement.CONDUCT OF THE INVESTIGATIONFor a short time early in 1935 the opportunity to obtain at least some additional information on the effect of acid mine water on cements was presented by the Relief Works Division, which provided money for irregular and indefinite employment for several months. Purchase of apparatus or material was not permitted under this arrangement, and indefinite duration of the work, intermittent employment, and finally complete cessation of the work prevented planning for extensive investigation of this particular problem."

Electrical resistivities 01 liquid Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi alloys were measured using an electrodeless technique. The resistivities ranged from 50 to 160 microhm -cm, temperature dependences were positive, and no sharp peaks in the composition dependence of the resistivity were observed. On the basis of these observations, it was concluded that the alloys are typical metallic liquids. The electron con-cent9,ation was calculated from the measured resis-tizlity and available thermodynamic data using a model which attributes electrical resistivity to scattering by density and composition flzcctuations. A correla-tion was shown between the departure of the electron concentration from a linear combination of the pure component valences and the value of the excess integral molar free energy. Calculation of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity showed a need for more detailed thermodynamic data in these systems and led to suggestions for improvement in the concept of residual resistivity in the fluctuation scattering model. THE electrical resistivity of liquid metals provides information regarding interatomic interactions and their effects upon structure. In this experiment an electrodeless technique was used to measure the electrical resistivities of liquid alloys of Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi, and the results were used with thermodynamic data to calculate a parameter which reflects the tendency toward localization of electrons due to compositional ordering. It was found that the resistivities of these alloys are generally metallic in magnitude and temperature dependence. The electrical and thermodynamic properties are discussed in terms of the fluctuation scattering model'22 which supposes that the electrical resistivity arises from scattering due to a static average structure and departures from the average due to fluctuations in density and composition. Further, this model is compared with the pseudopotential scattering model of Ziman et al.3-5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloy samples were prepared from 99.999 pct pure elements obtained from American Smelting and Refining Company (except tin which was obtained from Consolidated Smelting and Refining Company.) Manuscript submitted May 31, 1968. EMD Weighed portions were sealed inside evacuated silica capsules, melted, and homogenized before the resistivity was measured. The resistivity of a liquid alloy was measured by placing the sample inside a solenoid and noting the change in Q. According to the method of Nyburg and ~ur~ess,~ the resistivity of a cylindrical sample may be determined from the change in resistance of a solenoid measured with a Q meter as T7--5--W =R7JT^ ='Kc-lm(Y) [1] where L, R, and Q = wL/R are the inductance, series resistance, and Q of the solenoid. The subscript s refers to the solenoid with the sample inside; the subscript 0 refers to the empty solenoid. Kc is the ratio of the sample volume to coil volume and y = 2 [bei'0(br)-j ber'o(br)~\ br\_bero(br) +j bei0 (br) expressed with Kelvin functions which are the real and imaginary parts of Bessel functions of the first kind with arguments multiplied by (j)3'2. The argument of the function Y is hr where r is the sample radius and b2 = po~/p, i.e., the permeability of free space times 271 times the frequency divided by the resistivity in rationalized MKS units. Since Eq. [I] cannot be solved explicitly for p, values of Kc. lm(Y) were tabulated at increments of 0.1 in the argument by. A measurement of Q, and Q, determined a value of Kc . lm (Y) and the corresponding value of br could be read from the table. From the known r, uo,, and w, the resistivity, p, was determined. The change in Q was measured after letting the encapsulated Sample reach equilibrium inside a copper wire solenoid. The solenoid was contained in an evacuated vycor tube in order to retard oxidation of the copper while operating at high temperatures and heated inside a 5-sec-tion nichrome tube furnace capable of obtaining 900°C. Temperature was determined with two chromel-alumel thermocouples, one in contact with the solenoid 30 mm above the top of the sample and the other inserted in an axial well at the other end of the solenoid and secured with cement so that the junction was 2 mm below the bottom of the sample. Temperature readings were taken with respect to an ice water bath junction, and the voltage could be estimated to the nearest thousandth of a millivolt. The lower thermocouple was calibrated by observing its voltage and the Q of the coil as the temperature passed through the melting points of samples of indium and tellurium. The upper thermocouple reading was systematically different from the lower thermocouple reflecting the temperature difference due to a displacement of 60 mm axially and 6 mm radially. THE theory of hardening by interference with slip which has been so clearly developed by Jeffries and his co-workers requires that an alloy to be amenable to age or heat hardening should contain among its components some that will stay in solid solution at high temperatures and precipitate as a secondary phase on cooling. This secondary phase may be either a more or less pure individual element (chromium in the case of copper, anti-mony in the case of lead), or some intermetallic com-pound. Those cases of hardening which depend on the precipitation of a compound are not only the most frequent, but are also far superior in the efficiency of hardening obtained. However, the slip interference theory as stated in its most general form is not sufficient to foretell new cases of this type of hardening and also will not explain some phenomena of a more intricate nature. It is not sufficient that a secondary phase might be absorbed by the main one at high temperatures and precipitated at the lower ones. The kinetics of this precipitation and the accompanying. physical phenomena of dimensional changes play independent and highly important parts. These kinetics, while not yet sufficiently studied to he formulated in the shape of physicochemical equations, might find their expression-in a qualitative systema-tization of the phenomena of precipitation according to two different viewpoints. To begin with, we encounter the question as to the velocities of the precipitation and of the growth of the phase precipitated. To harden a metal in an efficient manner we must be able to control the precipitation on one hand and also to bring the total of the secondary phase to such a number and size of the particles pre-cipitated as, will produce a desirable hardening effect under commercially feasible conditions of. age or heat hardening. From this viewpoint six different cases may be dis-cerned.
