Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.

"The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The website advocates freedom to devise any architecture that best suits the project under study, but promotes rigour through the following practices:four cash streams and graphsthree architectures – concept, prefeasibility and feasibilitysix principles.The modules in the Level 2 evaluation use conversational language to describe in detail the broad range of activities needed to properly understand and characterise a project/business. Ok Tedi Mine is located eighteen kilometers from the Irian Jaya border in the Star Mountains, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Sequential flotation concentrators produce a copper / gold concentrate for market, and a pyrite concentrate for environmental containment, with low sulphur tailings from the pyrite flotation sequence being discharged to river. Strict sulphur assay targets are set for the riverine discharge. Current porphyry and skarn ore blends from open pit operations at Mt. Fubilan will cease by 2017. However, drill cores indicate an economic ore body in the skarn ores surrounding and below the current pit limits. With proposed mining from a western pit wall ‘cut back’ and an eastern pit wall underground operation, potential for ore ageing in sub level cave underground stockpiles is apparent. With little information in the literature, Ore Ageing test work at prefeasibility level consisted of multiple one tonne stockpiles of -50 mm crushed rock. For the bankable feasibility study, a successful test work program was implemented utilizing 40 tonne ROM ore stockpiles composed of exposed pit extensions of future ores. Realistic ageing profiles of Skarn ores were obtained from one tonne monthly samples subjected to laboratory testing. Test work outcomes included:• Similar ore ageing profiles from both the pre feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility study (FS) programs, suggesting ore susceptibility to oxidation has greater effect in ore ageing than rock size for Ok Tedi skarns. • Laboratory rougher flotation of pyrite showed significant variation in sulphur recovery rate, suggesting three classes of pyrite floatability.• Laboratory rougher flotation of both copper and pyrite for up to 19 months ore ageing from 11 stockpiles, suggested three stages in the ore ageing process.

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is delineated by the Vitiaz trench to the North (paleo sub duction zone, Brocher, 1985), the Vanuatu is- land arc (called before New Hebrides arc) to the West and South, the Hunter Fiacture Zone to the South-East and the Fiji islands to the East (Brocher, 1985 ; Larue et al., 1982 ; Carney and MacFarlane, 1982 ; Falvey, 1978). The NFB is characterized by shallow water depths (about 3 km) (Chase et al., 1982 ; Scla- ter et al., 1972 ; Karig, 1971), high heat flow (average of 2.29 HFC) (MacDonald et al., 1973 ; Halunen, 1979), strong positive free air anoma- lies (Worzel, 1965 ; Kogan, 1976 ; Luyendick et al., 1974 ; Solomon and Biehler, 1969) and a geoid anomaly (Malahoff and Larue, 1979) inter- preted as a geoid swelling. Few refraction data reveal a relatively thin crust and sediment co- ver, and the existence of low speeds in the up- per mantle beneath the NFB (between 7,1 and 7,7 km/s) (Larue et al., 1982 ; Raitt, 1956), which could indicate the existence of active spreading zone(s) in this area (Barazangi et al., 1974). Global seismicity of the SW Pacific clearly de- fines the.limits of the NFB, as well as the Lau basin (Sykes et al., 1969). But one can note the low level of shallow seismicity of the NFB (Ham- burger and Isacks, in press) which concentrates in three distinct trends :

The paper reviews the existing criteria of the formation of particle-bubble aggregates during flotation. It is shown that predictions obtained by these criteria do not completely fit to the interaction between mineral particles and air bubbles. Experimental results of the studies into the influence exerted by molecular forms of collectors on the particle-bubble interaction are reported. Rate of dry spot expansion on the surface of pyrite with various combinations of chemically and physically adsorbed xanthate are examined. It is shown that molecular forms of collectors accelerate the rate of dry spot expansion on the mineral surface after the local rupture of the water film between particle and air bubble. The authors come to a conclusion that the molecular forms of collectors remove water from the interlayer between mineral particle and air bubble during their contact. Similarities of the proposed mechanism with the action of ion-molecular associates of fatty acids and amines are discussed. Reagents with high surface pressure and rate of spreading at the water-bubble interface are required for the effective interfacial dewatering. It is concluded that the value of surface pressure can serve as the criterion for efficiency of physically adsorbed reagents. The low surface pressure indicates weak collecting ability but high selectivity of the collector. Therefore, the presence of the molecular forms of collectors in the sorption layer is the necessary condition for formation of particle-bubble aggregates, and comparison of the surface tensions of collectors could be recommended as the estimation criterion of their flotation activity and selectivity.

RECORD production of portland cement, crushed limestone, marble, lime, and clays highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1959. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite, and third in output of iron ore, scrap mica, and native asphalt. Alabama's mineral industry was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and iron ore, which accounted for 51 percent of the total value of production in 1958 and 1959. Other important industries were cement manufacturing, petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of United States Steel Corp. (coal;. iron ore, limestone, lime, and magnesium compounds), Southern Cement Co. Division of American-Marietta Co. (cement, lime, limestone, and miscellaneous clay) , Woodward Iron Co. "In the present study, the effect of organic/inorganic (hybrid) polyacrylamide polymer on fine coal flotation was investigated. Raw coal samples contain about 37% of ash-forming mineral at a feed size of -75 + 38 um were subjected to flotation tests in the presence of in-house synthesized hybrid Al(OH)3-PAM at different polymer dosages and pH values. Results show a significant improvement in both combustible recovery and ash rejection at 1 ppm polymer dosage. Further improvement of combustible recovery was obtained when flotation was performed at pH 5. Interfacial properties of coal particles before and after flotation were examined through electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements of coal/water slurries. Zeta potential vs. pH curve were established and compared. In the case of raw coal/water slurry, zeta potential-pH curve resembles the ash-forming minerals (silica and clays) more than coal. After Al(OH)3-PAM-assisted flotation, the zeta potential of froth/water slurry shifted to more positive values point which strongly indicates significant removal of ash-forming minerals from coal by Al(OH)3-PAM. INTRODUCTION Coal has been a major commodity in meeting the world energy demand during the past several decades (Milici et al., 2013). According to the international energy agency, global coal demand will continue to increase for the coming decades. With increasing world population, the global electricity demand would also increase as more people would get access to basic electricity especially in developing countries (Maggio & Cacciola, 2012). Due to this increase in energy consumption, operations in coal mining and beneficiation processes have been highly mechanized to meet the demands. This mechanization has increased the quantity of raw fine coal particles produced which contain high amount of ash-forming mineral matter (slimes). Aplan et al., have reported that the major constituents of ash-forming minerals in U.S.A coal are clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite (Aplan, 1997). Conventional froth flotation for fine coal cleaning suffers mainly from two major problems: 1) Low recovery of ultrafine coal particles due to slime coating by ash-forming minerals, and 2) The lack of selectivity, which results in the flotation of middlings and entrainment of mineral fines in the froth (Polat et al., 2003). Slime coating on both valuable and air bubbles have been proposed to explain the observed reduction in flotation recovery especially when fine grinding is required. In this case mineral matter may be degraded to extremely fine or colloidal sizes thereby creating difficulty in the water clarification process such as flotation. Slimes inhibit bubble-particle attachment, and increases reagent consumption due to the increase in solid/liquid interfacial area, resulting in low coal recovery."

From its early beginnings, shortly after the Witwatersrand gold rush of 1886, Randfontein Estates was planned as a heavyweight operation. The venture was capitalized by J .B. Robinson to the tune of £2 million at time when syndicates were loath to invest £50000 in ventures in and around the new metropolis, Johannesburg, which had sprung up midway along the Witwatersrand. But by then Robinson was a colossus among his contemporaries. Operating as a loner as he had done on the Kimberley diamond fields, where he created his own individual fortune and commanded the sort of respect which, early in his career, led to his election as Mayor of Kimberley. When news of a third gold discovery in the Transvaal (the first two had been in the Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton areas) reached Kimberley, Robinson's pioneering spirit was further stired and he hastened to the new goldfield to stake his claims before his business adversaries- Rhodes, John X. Meriman, Hans Sauer, and Caldecot-could entrench themselves. Once the new Witwatersrand goldfields had been proclaimed, claimpegging started in earnest. But the question was: where to start? Diamond men al, not one of the financiers had any knowledge of the geology of the gold-bearing formations.

"The fatigue behavior of two high-strength sheet steels used to produce car bodies, a dual-phase steel and a TWIP one, both with ultimate tensile strength close to 1 GPa, is investigated.Unnotched tensile specimens are fatigue tested at room temperature with constant load amplitude and zero load ratio, in order to determine their 1 million cycles fatigue limit, both in the asfabricated sheet condition and after the resistance spot welding of one small homologous sheet square onto the calibrated length of the tensile specimen. Moreover, pre-cracked compact tension specimens are tested with load ratio 0.1 to determine the Paris fatigue crack growth curve.The fatigue results are completed with crystallographic, microstructural, tensile, and fractographic examinations, and the influence of the microstructure and of the welding processes is discussed.IntroductionCar bodies are increasingly made with high-strength weldable steels, in order to reduce vehicles' weight (to save fuel and reduce air pollution) and to improve the vehicle occupant safety in case of car crash. The main mechanical requirements of these steels in service are fracture strength and energy absorption, relevant for crashes, as well as fatigue endurance, relevant for ordinary car usage. [1]Steel sheets for car-body applications are usually made by continuous casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, continuous annealing (or other continuous heat treatment), and protective coating (in some cases). The sheets are then cold formed (deep drawn) to produce car body parts. Finally, the car bodies are built by assembling several deep-drawn parts, often consisting of different steels, usually through the Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process, whereby two or three overlapping sheets are welded by local Joule-effect heating [2].Dual-Phase (DP) steels are widely used, low alloy steels with a microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite, obtained from a final heat treatment which consists of heating at an intercritical temperature and then quenching. Mining equipment, like all other equipment, is subject to failure. Since most failures occur at random and are unexpected, corrective maintenance is usually more expensive and causes more down-time than preventive maintenance. In order to reduce the number of failures and thereby increase the availability of an equipment or system, preventive maintenance can be scheduled at predetermined points of time. The preventive maintenance scheduling policies presented in this paper utilize reliability and probability theories. They can be applied to various production bottlenecks where high cost equipment precludes having sufficient quantities of stand-by units.

Provide better ventilation for mines by reducing air leakage around stoppings. Approach Most stoppings are constructed of concrete blocks and trowelled-on mortar and are not very airtight. Bureau of Mines research has shown that brushing on modified mortar containing fiberglass and/or other additives, that enhance strength and adhesion, minimizes air leakage around and through the stoppings. Airtightness is an important factor in building stoppings since an airtight stopping will provide for more efficient ventilation airflow and more cost-efficient use of the mine's ventilation system. An important problem in rock engineering is to control the properties of artificial rock. A compaction technique for casting artificial rock specimens with controlled properties is described, i.e. using a compression-testing machine to compress the mixture. Uniform density is necessary to achieve uniformity of properties of the specimens, and uniform density can be obtained by using the specific pressing method presented. Rebound and borax content are important to the technique and have been studied as well.

For example, as a nation develops from a subsistence economy through industrialization and into a service based economy, the use of minerals is at first low, then grows rapidly, and finally stabilizes. The past trends in the use of agricultural minerals by the currently advanced nations provide a pattern that the world as a whole may follow as it progresses through the stages of economic development. Future needs for agricultural minerals are estimated using this approach.

Industrial complexes rely on measurements of flow rates, qualities, and concentrations for monitoring and optimizing their operation. Corporations use the data from the various sensors and measurements to make business decisions, which affect the profitability of the operation. However, gross errors, due to a variety of reasons like faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt the actionable information supplied to operations, quality managers, and maintenance personnel. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools to model the process, sift through the available data to locate the gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to validate the sensors and instruments. In this way the data are unified to give the most accurate plant information for use by the monitoring and decision making processes. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All of these depend on reliable and accurate data. The data unification methods validate the individual measurements by using the concept of balances and statistical techniques where each instrument is no longer independent of the other measurements in the facility. This paper refers to the data unification and analysis methods required for profitable plant operations. Continuous improvement and monitoring of the measurement system at the plant and analysis of the reconciled data provide the best information for the decision-making process. On-line gross error detection and elimination methods are required to ensure efficient evaluation of process performance and process optimization. An open discussion of the new methods for gross error detection and data unification will be presented.

It is the task of this portion of today's session on the new meaning of regional tectonics in the search for ore districts to discuss known interactions of tectonics and ore deposition in the 'new global tectonics' context. I will speak particularly about known applications of the recent tectonic advances to ore finding. Stated yet another way, it's getting on in time toward the "put up or shut up" stage-¬and I would not be here if I thought that the new tectonics were not an effective present matrix for ore finding. Before delving into specific geologic relationships--and I propose to discuss mainly the evolution of an idea which may reveal the presence of a major copper deposit on mainland Mexico--I must note that there have been no published accounts that I know of which assert that a particular discovery has been made soley and specifically because of an interpretation based upon mechanisms directly linked to sea floor spreading or plate tectonics. It is nonetheless true" that several major exploration efforts are based upon such interpretations, and, as is normal when exploration ideas are involved, one does not wish to call attention to an advantageous position in a highly competitive business. Little might be expected to have been announced in so fast-moving and potentially lucrative an area. Another point which needs to be made is that people such as B. S. Butler (1933), Billingsley and Locke (1935 and 1941), Harrison Schmitt (1935), and more recently Mayo (1958) have been working for decades with the tectonic expressions of the emergent tectonics without recog¬nition of the driving forces or the unifying tectonic concepts

"Concentration, ore-dressing, or the dressing of minerals are common terms used in metallurgy and indicate processes of separating valuable minerals from worthless gangue. It is understood, of course, that the products from such processes, being separated from the various minerals and gangue, are ready for commercial sale or for further treatment by smelters and refineries.Gravity concentration takes advantage of the difference in specific gravity of the various constituent minerals and gangue of waste material in the ore. The two most common forms of concentration by this means are jigging and table concentration. Jigs usually are used in the separation of relatively coarse material and the tables for the finer material, the line of division in general being about 20 mesh.There are mar factors to be considered .before a decision can be made as to what method would be best adapted to the successful treatment of an ore and only by careful experiments can this be determined. Among the important factors to be considered are. The nature of the minerals present, their physical and chemical relations to the gangue material, and the gangue material itself. Perhaps the most important is the number of minerals present and their relation to each other.Metals exist in ores in three principal forms -- sulphides, oxides or carbonates, and native. Concentration by gravity methods is in general best suited to sulphide ores, although in some places considerable success has, been obtained in the concentration of oxide ores by gravity methods."

The formation of copper chlorides in flue dust or deposits in heat recovery boiler of copper smelters or waste-fired boilers may lead to formation of corrosive partially molten deposits on walls and heat exchangers of the boilers. These deposits can contain various other metals, such as alkalis, Fe, Zn, Pb together with oxides and sulfates. In the present study, a thermodynamic model for copper-containing binary and ternary metal chloride systems within multicomponent CuCl-CuCl2-FeCl2-FeCl3- PbCl2-ZnCl2 system has been assessed and optimized based on own experimental phase equilibrium data, as well as literature data. The thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase was modelled using the quasichemical quadruplet model and a thermodynamic database was optimized to predict all available experimental data within the experimental error limits. The thermodynamic database allows for more accurate predictions of potential corrosion-related issues in various heat recovery boilers and waste-fired boilers due to formation of copper chlorides. INTRODUCTION In the copper flash smelting, flue dust can cause severe problems in the gas train, used for separating dust from the SO2-rich off gas, by forming corroding accretions on the walls of the heat recovery boiler. Formation of dust build-ups in the boiler need to be cleaned regularly and potential corrosion damage checked, requiring costly and unscheduled shutdowns of the flash smelting process. Compounds of copper and zinc among other elements having high vapour pressures may volatilize during the smelting of the copper concentrate, forming dust when the process gas cools down. Also, particles of solid or liquid iron oxides originating from the ore get transported with process gas to the heat recovery boiler as a result of entrainment in the flue gas (Miettinen, 2008) The dust deposit build-ups on the boiler walls are formed partly by direct impact of particles and partly by vapour condensation on the boiler walls. The initial deposition takes place by the condensation of vapours that contain zinc, lead, arsenic and other metals having high vapour pressures. Also, low melting point eutectic components of alkali salts such as chlorides and sulphates can act as sticky cohesive particles attaching to the boiler walls. The fine particles landing on the surface of the porous dust deposit layer react in the SO2-rich atmosphere of the boiler to sulphates. The process gas within the boiler contains SO2, O2, SO3, H2O and N2 that diffuse into the porous accretions to form a stagnant gas layer within the dust deposit structure. The composition of this gas layer may differ greatly from the composition of the process gas that is flowing on the surface of the accretion layer. Locally HCl and H2SO4 are formed and even a reducing atmosphere may exist within the dust deposit layer, allowing new reactions to take place. The local micro-atmosphere may enable metal sulphates to be reduced to secondary sulphides and even metallic components. Within the accretion layer, components may be formed that would not be stable in the gas atmosphere inside the boiler (Miettinen, 2008). This may be the mechanism by which for instance chlorides of Cu, Fe and Zn are formed within the deposit layer.
