The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The potential synergy between chemometrics and TOS is far from exhausted at this time; much work remains.CITATION:Esbensen, K H, 2014. Within the mineral processing Industry. a range of grinding conditions exists which include semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod milling. and conventional ball milling. Each of these mill environments presents a unique environment for grinding media, requiring the application of specific physical and chemical properties for optimum grinding media performance. The environments are characterized by varying degrees and combinations of abrasive, corrosive, and impact wear. An extensive test program has been conducted to determine the extent wear rates vary between these different applications. Test results are related to production results, ball size, and mill operating conditions.

The major underlying threat to man's successful survival and happy existence on this planet is our own prolification. This poses an even greater threat to the future of civilization than continued wars and even "The Bomb" itself. Just the predictions of the world's population trend are awesome and demand our serious thought. This trend has been given the now well-known term, "The Population Explosion" - and this is literally what is taking place throughout most of the countries around the globe. Today, the world's resources support approximately 3.3 billion people. Based on the present world population growth rate of 2.1 percent, there will be another 65, million just one year from today. Such an increase in one year means that the world will add a greater population than that of Mexico and Canada combined. Projecting at this remarkable, but unchecked, growth rate, 6.7 billion people will be competing for survival by the end of this century.

The first part of this two-part article summarizes the result of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program involving operating mining companies throughout the world. The program was aimed at developing a better understanding of the influence of slurry rheology on the performance of mineral/coal grinding circuits. Part 1 presents the basic concepts identified, including typical laboratory results showing the influence on grinding behavior of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals. Part 2, in January, will illustrate typical industrial scale test results on both open and closed circuits using the concepts presented in Part 1. Special emphasis will be placed on identifying some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. Introduction The industrial-scale practice of wet grinding minerals and coals in tumbling media mills (ball, rod, and pebble) is well-known to operating mineral processing engineers and plant design personnel. Over the last century, considerable experience and data has been collected, correlated, and put into rules or guidelines for successful circuit design and operation. Typical factors influencing circuit throughput that have been analyzed in some depth are mill diameter and length, grinding media size and loading, feed and product particle size, mill power use, and the interaction of classifier type and efficiency with the grinding device. Until recently, knowledge of slurry rheology influence on large scale grinding circuit performance has been limited. Even today slurry rheology effects are essentially ignored in plant design. Indeed, in most plant operations only qualitative guidelines are followed. For example, too thick a slurry causes throughput losses and too thin a slurry uses excessive water or causes water handling problems such as pumping limitations. A search of published literature and numerous discussions with experienced plant operating personnel has shown an awareness that changing the percent of solids in the mill influences grinding or the response of grinding involving fine feeds versus coarse feeds. However, most the work identified relative to rheology effects in mineral/coal grinding was qualitative. Even in the few studies that were more quantitative, the scope of the work was usually too narrow to draw general conclusions. Also, the detailed rheological characterization tied to observed breakage and the combination of laboratory to industrial-scale testing that is required to develop a broad understanding of any factor influencing grinding had not been done. In this environment, this detailed program began in 1967. It had three distinct goals: • To develop a basic understanding of slurry rheology influence on breakage characteristics in the laboratory. • To test general rheology concepts developed in the lab on the industrial scale. • To develop a commercially viable chemical approach to controlling slurry rheology that would lead to the use of chemical grinding additives or grinding aids. The goals have been met, at least in part, this year. A small fraction of the extensive laboratory and plant results have been made available in published literature. Much of the research program dealt with identifying and developing chemical grinding aids, but a lot of useful and practical information on percent solids, particle size, and slurry temperature influence on grinding circuit performance also was collected. The purpose of this article is to present a clear and concise sum¬mary of the results of the entire program. The importance of rhe¬ology control in grinding circuit behavior will be demonstrated using a series of carefully per¬formed industrial scale experi¬ments (both open and closed cir¬cuits) that have not yet been reported in general literature. Mining companies participating in the test program on a proprie¬tary basis have found the informa¬tion in this article to be useful in better understanding and improv¬ing circuit performance. Viscosity Effects in Grinding Studies In this program&apos;s previous labo¬ratory studies, it was shown that there is a consistent pattern of change in specific rates of break¬age of both mineral and coal slur¬ries as slurry fluidity changes. Using the net production rate of material smaller than some spec¬ified size-for example, kg/hr of <75 µm (200 mesh)-as an index of mill production in a standard batch mill test (with a given feed material, feed size, mill, and mill conditions such as constant time of grind), the following facts were established (see Fig. 1): • The normal range of low den¬sity, low viscosity slurry (region A) gave no variation in mill produc¬tion. An earlier publication has discussed three methods lor obtaining relative permeability data on small core sample-: and the apparatus and technique for the capillary pressure displacement method. This paper describes the apparatus and technique for the solution gas and the dynamic displacement methods and presents a routine procedure for obtaining oil-gas and water-oil relative permeability data. Theoretical and experimental considerations are presented to show that the end effect commonly associated with the dynamic flow mechanism is extremely small where constant rates are employed in the flowing phase. An effect of flow rate on relative permeabilities obtained by the dynamic system is found only when gas is one of the flowing phases and this effect is ascribed to a form of channeling in the capillary system. The apparatus and procedure* used to obtain relative permeability data with three phases flowing are described and some preliminary results of the use of this method are shown. It is important that. in any type of relative permedbility determination. the core be originally at virgin reservoir conditions with respect to the fluids within the pore *paces. (for example. oil used to displace water from core until connate water saturation estahlished). and that the subsequent saturation changes in the core be analagous to tile reservoir depletion mechanism for which the data are to he used. PROCEDURE OF DETERMINING RELATIVE PERMEABILITY DATA WITH TWO PHASES FLOWING A standardized procedure has been set up for obtaining relative permeability data and other information on small core samples. This procedure essentially consists of 11 steps as shown below: 1. Determination of tile capillary pressure curve.&apos;! This information is used to help select samples for relative permeability determinations and to charactrrize. in general. the pore size distribution of the sample. 2. Determination of the specific permeabilities to air, oil. and water. These values are those on which the relative pern~eahility calculations are based. 3. Reduction of the core to connate water by an oil drive using the high speed centrifuge. 1. Determination of the critical gas saturation value and the associated relative permeability to oil by the solution gas drive method. 5. Determination of the relative permeabilities to oil and gab in the region where both phases are flowing by the capillary presqure method. 6. Reduction of the sample to residual oil in the centrifuge by an air drive. and the determination of the relative permeability to gas at this point.

Successful mine exploration requires sound planning and modern exploration techniques, but it also requires perseverance and the right timing. The La Caridad mineral area has been known for over 70 years, but as with many mines, it was not "discovered" until viewed under new economic conditions and exploration philosophies. Present exploration of the La Caridad area began in 1964 and was carried out under a joint Mexican Government-United Nations Project. Detailed exploration was begun by Asarco Mexicana S.A. in late 1968. The geology of the La Caridad deposits conforms, generally, to the "porphyry copper" deposits of Arizona. However, breccias and pegmatites play a very important part in the emplacement of mineralization.

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 meters has been designed and implemented by the Hawai&apos;i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) of the University of Hawai&apos;i. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, an ROV, the Pisces V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system, all aboard the 222- foot R/V Ka&apos;imikai-o-Kanaloa. All systems are operated from the stern of Ka&apos;imikai with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multipurpose use of the ship for launch and recovery of the Pisces V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan or photo and video system operated at 10 meters above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate an ROV system. The garage/ROV system can also act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability. The ship is equipped with a SeaBeam and shallow penetration sediment profiling systems. This integrated system approach to deep ocean floor research will make it possible for HURL to carry out research pro- grams on seamount ocean resources and ocean chemistry and climate in Hawai&apos;i and the equatorial Pacific.

Computers are playing an increasing role in the management of technical data in mines. Companies are re-assessing the role of their data processing departments as users demand computer resources in non-accounting areas. Data of all kinds is now being seen as a, company resource, and the role of computing professionals is to help to manage the data flow, not merely to manage computers. The concept of distributed data bases puts the responsibility for data entry, editing and updating with the user. This challenges conservative views of centralized control of computing, suggesting, instead, centralized co-ordination. A survey of the possible applications of computers in technical areas points up the special requirements of handling raw, processed and consolidated technical data. Technical data bases have become flexible as mini- computer hardware and software have rapidly developed. Management has the ultimate responsibility for efficiently administering corporate data bases, and it must ensure suitable policies are developed for this purpose, with enough flexibility to cope with the impact of fast changing technology.

NI-CR and some Ni-Cr-Fc alloys, when used as electrical resistance heating elements in reducing atmospheres, at times suffer rapid breakdowns due to so-called "green rot." These reducing atmospheres are most frequently used in bright annealing and heat-treating furnaces which are kept for long periods of time at 1500&apos; to 1800°F. The green rot is a preferential oxidation of the chromium in the alloy to such an extent that the remaining metal frequently becomes ferromagnetic. The Curie point (magnetic transition point) at room temperature for a pure Ni-Cr alloy is known to be at about 7 pct Cr.¹ This represents a severe loss in chromium for one popular grade of resistance alloy, which is nominally 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr. The formation of oxides along the grain boundaries makes the ribbon brittle and gives the fracture a green, earthy appearance—hence the name. The authors have studied this phenomenon, simulating the industrial conditions by heating resistance ribbons in various reducing atmospheres, such as moist hydrogen or the atmosphere specified in the ASTM test.² This atmosphere contains 16 pct H2, 10 pct CO, 4 pct C02, 1 pct CH1, 1.5 to 2.5 pct H2O, balance N2. Little success was had in producing severe corrosion with the commercial 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys. It had been noticed, however, that 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy wires deteriorated very rapidly when placed in the bottom of narrow thermocouple protection tubes. The bottoms of the tubes with the wires were heated in air. This took place both in porcelain tubes and in Inconel* tubes either with the cold end open or loosely stoppered with asbestos. On examination the wires showed microstructures which would be classified as green-rot corrosion. Subsequent investigations with various alloy wires confirmed the observation that corrosion occurred in some wires, including 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys, much more rapidly in such tubes than had occurred previously in test atmospheres mentioned above. When 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloys are oxidized with an abundant air supply, the oxide coat consists of both nickel and chromium oxides. In this case thermodynamic equilibrium between the oxides is not established. However, when oxidized 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy specimens were heated to 1500" to 1800°F inside small diameter tubes, the oxide coat transformed to a bright metallic outer layer of nickel or nickel-rich alloy, beneath which appeared a green oxide, followed by intergranularly attacked metal. The obvious explanation is that in the narrow tubes, thermodynamic equilibrium is being established according to the equation NiO + Cr (in alloy) ? Ni + Cr2O3 This reaction is favored due to the fact that the oxygen pressure over nickel oxide is more than 10"&apos; times the oxygen pressure over the green chromium oxide. The initial oxygen in the tubes is depleted very rapidly by oxidation of the wire and of the tube, if it is metallic. A confirmation of the occurrence of the reaction, reduction of NiO by the chromium in the alloy, was obtained by putting oxidized nickel foil into an evacuated quartz tube along with a piece of bright 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy ribbon, and heating the tube at 1820°F for a number of hours. The nickel oxide on the foil was completely reduced to pure nickel, leaving a bright foil. The 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy became strongly magnetic and showed the typical green-rot structure. Weights of the samples before and after testing showed the weight loss of the foil to approximately equal the weight gain of the ribbon. Evidently the bottom of long, narrow protection tubes, stoppered or not, may under certain conditions act just as the sealed quartz tubes in respect to being a confined space in which oxygen is not freely replenished. This condition of oxygen depletion can be prevented by introducing a small amount of air into the bottom of the tube. Many conditions becloud the green-rot phenomenon, such as carburization, sulphidization, and the presence of other corrosive agents. However, these experiments have shown that the basic reaction is a case of internal oxidation which can occur simply by adjusting the oxygen pressure to a low enough level so that the atmosphere will leave the nickel intact and oxidize the chromium. The action of the other agents in commercial atmospheres can then be taken up as individual cases. From these and numerous other tests completed to date or still in progress, it is believed that a more critical evaluation of electrical resistance alloys for their resistance to green-rot corrosion can be made. A much better understanding of the mechanism for this type of corrosion should also result. A more complete report on these experiments will be published later. Today Li-ion batteries are considered as one of the most attractive available energy storage solutions. However in order to overcome environmental, legislative and economic issues, the management of used batteries has to be considered and mainly the recycling. The present paper deals with the recycling of used Li-ion batteries and the recovery of high value metals from active materials of electrodes. Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) and lithium manganese nickel magnesium oxide (LMNM) cathodes, which contain most of valuable elements typically used in the composition of active materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated by a hydrometallurgy route. The process is divided into two steps: the materials leaching and the elements recovery by a selective chemical separation. Some experimental parameters (acid nature, concentration, time and temperature) are studied to determine the most efficient conditions of dissolution. Then, the valuable elements such as nickel, cobalt and manganese are selectively recovered with a high efficiency close to 100 % and with a high purity by precipitation. By this study, an adaptable hydrometallurgy process can be defined according to the composition of Li-ion batteries to recycle.

It is not uncommon for overall quality of coal from a mine to deteriorate as the mine is developed or for an improved-quality coal specification to be imposed during the life of the mine. Either of these conditions typically results in management pressuring mine personnel to take greater care in delineating the seam from top and bottom rock. When mining and seam conditions require a portion of the seam to be removed to ensure sufficient rock is removed to meet the quality specification, physical-coal cleaning may become economically competitive with in-pit seam grooming. The additional cost of coal cleaning may, in some cases, be justified by permitting higher recovery of the coal seam than is possible when cleaning the seam with excavators in the pit. This paper compares projected coal cleaning results with present in-pit grooming techniques and reports the economic results.

A Federal statute, enacted several years since, provides for the preparation of a geologic map of the United States. There are three requisites for a geologic map. The first is a suitable base- or surface-map upon which the rock-formations may be platted by means of conventions ; the second is a classification of the rocks and formations, and the third is a system of conventions by which the rocks and formations may be represented on the map. When the work of the Federal bureau created to prepare the geologic map was commenced, a topographic survey of the country was undertaken for the purpose of making maps suitable for the use of geologists in the field and for the representation of the geology; and this work has ever since been continued. The surveys have now extended over about one-fifth of the national domain, and are mapped on a series of atlas-sheets, each constituting a section of the great map of the United States. About 700 of these atlas-sheets are completed. They are in extended use among engineers, miners, prospectors, map-publishers and educators, and are thus widely known; moreover, these base-maps have been exhibited, described and discussed at meetings of the Institute, and thus do not require detailed consideration. The authors have previously described a piezoelectric-based system to measure the dynamic pressure during actual detonation in the field. This technique is used in a water hammer test set-up where a donor detonator is fired first, with the pressure sensor and an acceptor electronic detonator placed underwater in a water tank, and maintained at a fixed distance away from the donor detonator. The functioning and timing of the acceptor detonator are captured using a customised microcontroller board called the water hammer timer. Using such water hammer testing, the effect of dynamic pressure was studied as a function of the magnitude of pressure during the electronic timing countdown. "Louvicourt mine began operation in 1994. It is located in northwestern Quebec, 20 km east of Val d’Or. The mine is owned by Aur Resources (30%), which operates the mine, Teck/Cominco (25%) and Novicourt (45%). By the end of 2002 there were approximately 280 employees working on the site, including contractors. Production averages 4300 tons per day, working a massive sulphide body located between 415 m and 920 m underground.Maintenance expenses represent 27% to 29% of the operating costs, and the maintenance personnel represents 34% of the total workforce (including electrical, mechanical and concentrator maintenance staff). Considering these figures, in addition to capital costs and indirect costs, such as energy (electricity, fuel, gas, etc.), it is worthwhile to pay attention to how things are done in order to protect such investment. Every task performed to help understand the impact of Louvicourt’s practices must to be seen as an investment in the reliability of its operation."

In November 2009 Mintek installed the FloatStar? advanced flotation stabilization system on Vale&apos;s Cauê iron ore beneficiation plant in Brazil. In September 2010 the system was upgraded to include flotation optimization. The circuit consisted of two parallel cleaner circuits producing final concentrate. The tailings from the cleaner section passed through a scavenger circuit. Large, well-instrumented feed sumps played an important role in circuit stability, presenting a good opportunity for advanced control. Previously the plant was controlled using distributed control system (DCS) level control only. The flotation circuit processes roughly 30kt/day. The FloatStar system provided advanced control of the flotation circuit as well as of the sumps feeding the circuit. The system underwent a lengthy trial to assess the benefit that it provided. Two data sets were analysed, showing performance under advanced stabilization and optimization respectively. Several validation and consistency criteria were employed to ensure the quality of the analysis. Iron recovery and iron tailings grade were used to measure system performance. The analysis showed that the system increased recovery by up to 2.7%. In addition, the system decreased the iron tailings grade by between 1.2% (from 23.5% to 22.3%) and 4.3% (from 31.3% to 27.0%) during different test campaigns. The analysis also showed that the entire FloatStar stabilization system was active for 72.7% of the time from first activation to the end of the first data set (approximately 200 days). From the analysis it was concluded that under similar conditions for &apos;ON&apos; and &apos;OFF&apos; tests, the system provides a clear benefit. It was also found that over the longer term, the system continues to provide a benefit. This finding suggests that the results were not simply due to a short-term advantage. The size of the data set, as well as the magnitude of the recovery improvements, lends considerable confidence to these results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the FloatStar control system provides substantial benefit to operations at this site.

Bench top centrifuge is used to study the consolidation behavior of phosphatic clays. A mathematical model (based on first order kinetics) is developed to describe the relationship between the void ratio (at any time) and the effective stress. Permeability of the sediment as a function of the void ratio is also described. The obtained data are compared with that obtained by other consolidation testing methods. Centrifuge results indicate that consolidation data may be developed in a short period of time (hours) as compared to days or weeks when other techniques are used.

The modified perchloric--EDTA method devised by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of copper in high-grade samples gives results that are more precise and more accurate than those from the classical sulfuric-iodometric method. Although the perchloric--EDTA method is more costly than the conventional method, the savings in time alone largely offsets this difference. Specifically, the modifications wade in the more conventional procedure comprise (1) use of perchloric acid instead of sulfuric acid for dissolution of copper minerals, (2) precipitation of copper as copper sulfide from dilute perchloric acid solution, (3) wet oxidation and dissolution of the precipitated copper sulfide, (4) use of larger amounts of indicator than those employed in the Schwarzenbach method of titrating low-tenor copper solutions with disodium ethylenedinitri10-tetraacetate and murexide indicator, and (5) use of refrigeration to partially stabilize aqueous solutions of the indicator.

"Mineral separation efficiency in flotation depends, to an extent, on the type of frother used. Huntsman develops and manufactures unique frothers which are suited for mineral processing applications. This paper discusses the Huntsman approach to understanding the industry’s flotation frother requirements to optimise frother selection and introduce the Huntsman’s POLYFROTH® frother range. Specific case studies where the frothers are used are discussed. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a process of using bubbles to separate minerals based on their relative affinity for water. Bubbles are induced in the slurry through aeration. Chemistry is used to aid the flotation process and chemical reagents are added to enhance the separation process. The flotation reagents include frothers, collectors, surface modifiers and pH regulators that control physical and chemical conditions of solid, air and liquid phases, respectively. As described by Harris (1976), the key effect is that of bubble size control by way of preservation of the generated bubble size, which is attributed to the coalescence inhibition by the presence of the frother on the bubble surface. Following this, the frother must stabilize the froth phase. Frothers are also added to create optimal conditions for bubble creation and stability by decreasing the surface tension of the water. Depressants may be added, depending on the ore treated, to assist the hydrophilic particles to stay in the water phase. Clay particles may need to be dispersed to prevent them from attaching to the bubbles. Hydrophobic particles attach to the bubbles and are carried to the surface of the slurry where froth is formed. It is important for these bubbles to have the mobility to carry the mineral to the launder where the concentrate is collected. Types of Frothers There are generally three main groups of frothers used in froth flotation. Alcohol Type These frothers have a molecular structure that usually includes 5 to 8 carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon chain and their solubility in water is limited. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) belongs to this category and is widely used in the industry. The weaker alcohol-type frothers are more selective and typically suited to finer particles. There are three sub-categories under this group: aliphatic, cyclic and aromatic alcohols."

INTRODUCTION Trade financing is a particularly important component of short-term financing for a minerals company since errors, extra costs, or payment delays/defaults can easily wipe out the profit margin on a particular shipment or can cause problems when arranging purchases of e.g. reagents. It is required to make any minerals operation function and does not have to be cross-border to require proper management. Sources of working capital are as follows: 1. Extended credit terms from suppliers 2. Inventory loans from banks, finance companies 3. Accounts receivable financing or factoring 4. Credit lines or overdraft facilities from banks. TRADE CREDITS These are provided under the familiar terms "net 10 days" or payment due by the "10th day of the following month." Thirty days for payment is usual but longer periods can be negotiated with regular suppliers. Shipment may be made on open account with specified periods for settlement. In the mining industry, a custom smelter gains trade credit by paying for concentrates three months after the month of shipment. INVENTORY LOANS Various forms of inventory finance are provided via "floor-plan" or warehouse financing. A set percentage, usually 60%-80%, of a good-quality, readily saleable inventory item (e.g. bullion, concentrates, ingots) will be provided by a bank or finance company which will usually have security over these products and has a right to inspect the goods from time to time. Legal security will he achieved by warehouse receipts, floating liens, chattel mortgages, trust receipts, or through collateral management service companies. The latter certify control over stock or distribution outlets and often carry insurance against fraud. Costs range around 1.5% - 2.0% p.a. or more plus some fees to cover out-of-pockets or other costs. ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLES Accounts receivable financing is based on the company&apos;s generation of satisfactory receivables which are continuously assigned to a bank or finance company ("factoring"). Because of the risks in being able to collect receivables, such as payments to a smelter for its blister copper shipments to a refinery, this form of financing costs as much as 3% - 5% of the debt amount purchased plus an additional charge for processing paperwork. Receivables can be purchased with or without recourse and on a notification or non-notification basis to the client&apos;s customer to, respectively, pay the invoice directly to the bank or not. LETTERS OF CREDIT Letters of Credit ("L/C&apos;s") are a common feature of international trade finance whereby a bank, at the request of the buyer, issues a written undertaking to an exporter to pay a specified sum of money within a set time on presentation of previously specified documents. This undertaking means that the exporter is no longer relying on the credit standing and integrity of the foreign importer. A dispute about shipment does not otherwise affect the obligation to pay upon presentation of a "clean" set of documents. These documents include the hill of lading and other documentation, often on standard "form" bases. There are a number of conventions and techniques in L/C&apos;s such as irrevocable/revocable L/C&apos;s, time L/C&apos;s, confirmation/advising L/C&apos;s and transferable L/C&apos;s. These are tools to adjust for the varying risks that the importer will not pay. Other routes where one is comfortable with an importer include documentary sight hills (D/P hill), documentary term bills (D/A bill), and, of course, open account.
