Acid rock drainage (ARD) is a recognized environmental challenge facing mining industries. An ambient temperature ferrite (ATF) process has been investigated for treating ARD. Most nonferrous metal and calcium ions present in typical ARDs were found to be detrimental to the ATF process. Three approaches were examined, including C02 aeration, addition of complex agents and use of magnetic seeds. By introducing magnetic seeds in the ATF process, the interferences were minimized and all the precipitates formed with lime neutralization were magnetically recovered from a simulated ARD. The residual concentrations of major metal ions in the treated water were environmentally acceptable. The XRD pattern confirmed the spinel ferrite crystal structure of the products

AN iron blast furnace of 1000 tons daily capacity will produce about 100,000 cu; ft. per minute of blast-furnace gas. This contains about 25 per cent of carbon monoxide, and has a B.t.u. value of about 95. This gas-is used primarily for heating the stoves of the blast furnace, and secondarily, under boilers, for steam production. Occasionally it is also used in gas engines. The raw gas coming out of the furnace carries about 10 grains of flue dust per cubic foot of gas, under best operating conditions. With the furnace "rolling" or slipping, this quantity may temporarily be greatly increased. This dust would, of course, deposit on the checkers of the stoves, or plug the burners under the boilers; therefore the gas must be cleaned.

Flooding velocities were measured in a laboratory column (96 mm 4) provided with both bottom and side air entry Packings used were 6 mm glass rings and spheres and -16 +8 mm coke. Results showed that when air was introduced through side nozzles flooding velocities were much higher than those obtained when air was introduced at the bottom of the column. Significance of the results and application to blast furnace flooding is discussed from the viewpoint of assymmetric gas flow.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE REGION of Western Canada covered by this re-port lies between the Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield and the structurally deformed rocks of the eastern Cordillera, extending northward from the international border to the 60th parallel. It is some 487,000 square miles in area, with a total sedimentary fill of about 535,000 cubic miles0>. It includes parts of the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and the northeast corner of British Columbia and forms part of the geological region known as the Interior Platform, commonly referred to as the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The bedrock comprises carbonates and evaporites of Paleozoic age that lie on Precambrian crystalline rocks and are over-lain by a relatively thick blanket of Mesozoic and Tertiary elastic rocks. The nearly flat-lying bedrock, covered by a thick mantle of glacial drift, forms the Interior Plains physiographic province."

This report presents a study of the Cooper sand of the Fork Run pool of Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and a prediction of the secondary oil recovery by gasflooding the reservoir. A computer program employing a modification of the Craig, Geffen, and Morse secondary recovery calculation was used to make the gas flood performance forecast and is presented in the appendix. The Cooper sand reservoir in the Fork Run pool lies at a depth of about 1,900 feet and covers an area 1/2 mile wide by 2-1/4 miles long. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 8,266,000 STB. The primary recovery mechanism is solution gas drive, and ultimate primary recovery may reach 20 percent over a well life of 90 years. Two computer predictions were made for gas flooding the Cooper reservoir. The first was for a 25-acre pilot five-spot utilizing existing wells, but project economics were poor since only 25 percent of injection gas is utilized for pilot oil recovery. Recovery was 71,000 STB, or 22 percent of oil in place at flood initiation, but required 25,700 scf gas injected per STB of oil recovered. In the second prediction, pilot area performance was projected for the entire Fork Run pool, and economics became good. Recovery was 1,753,000 STB from 25 five-spots after the injection of only 6,400 scf per STB of oil recovered.

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by 'remote control mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation . In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term “communications” as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the

ATLAS Processing Company Shrevesport, LA initiated a major plant expansion in 1980. SITE Engineers, Inc. provided engineering consultation regarding the foundation of the vacuum unit. Four test borings were drilled and laboratory testing completed for shear strength and compressibility. Vertical drains were proposed to accelerate time rates of settlements. Steel erection was completed by May 22, 1981 with very small < 0.1 in., settlements. Hydrotesting was initiated on July 9, 1981 and completed on August 27, 1981. An average rebound of 0.3 in. was computed resulting into an average net settlement of 0.5 in. This paper describes in detail soil behavior during load testing.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of fluorspar from 35 domestic and 50 foreign, mines and deposits in 13 countries. Only 6 domestic properties are considered to be economic reserves, as 29 domestic deposits were found to have an average total cost of production that was uneconomical at a breakeven (0 pct) DCFROR. The 50 foreign properties evaluated were selected to represent at least 85 pct of the known demonstrated fluorspar resources located in market economy countries and China. All evaluated foreign operations were found to be economic to marginally economic in January 1984 dollars. World demonstrated ore reserves of 344 million metric tons (mt) containing 123 million mt of CaF2 were evaluated for the 56 operations. Average total costs needed to cover all costs over the life of each operation were determined for all recoverable fluorspar products. Comparisons of mining, beneficiation, and transportation costs per mt of fluorspar concentrate illustrate advantages between countries. Of the three largest producing countries, China, with its high-grade, low-cost operations had the lowest weighted average total cost of production ($38/mt concentrate). Mexico was next at $54/mt concentrate, and South Africa needed an average of $90/mt of concentrate to cover all costs of production for its low grade deposits.

Blast vibration records used in mining contain unwanted information in the form of noise due to long-period drifts, background noise, and noise due to the conversion of the analogue signal to a digital signal. When recorded signals from blasting are used to find other physical variables, such as going from particle velocity to acceleration or displacement, the additional information in the vibration signal can result in inaccuracies in the estimation of the peak values and more dramatically, the results in displacement or acceleration can be nonzero near the end of the record. There are different proposed methods to clean or filter the unwanted information from the signal. All of the methods are based on finding the best fit of the record average value (baseline) and then subtracting from the record under analysis to produce the desirable adjustment. Different criteria and functions are used to define the best fit. The function to use will depend on the shape of the record average values. The main characteristic of the baseline function is that it represents a low frequency wave. Such a low frequency wave can be a periodic function or a polynomial expression of nth order. According to the order of the polynomial expression, the baseline correction can be linear, parabolic or high order. In this document the detailed procedure and the results for the baseline correction of a blast vibration record using a periodic function and a polynomial expression of different order is presented. The results show that the drift problem when displacement is calculate using velocity records increases with the increase of the distance from the blast.

Lead-zinc production at MIM, Mount Isa includes three mines, a lead concentrator, zinc filter plant and lead refinery. Lead production is vertically integrated with lead-silver bullion shipped from Australia to London for refining. Zinc is sold as a concentrate. All three mines have reached varying states of maturity mining a multitude of orebodies having significant variation in grades and metallurgical recovery for three metals. Based on current levels of measured resources, the remaining project life is at least ten years. The objective is to schedule production over the life of all three mines so as to maximize the present value of the complex. Additional scheduling complexity arises out of the implementation of long-term schedules, capital expansion projects for both mining and processing, the presence of substantial inferred reserves and interactions with MIM copper production. A large-scale, time-dynamic, life-of-complex Mixed Integer Program (MIP) production schedule was formulated to optimize lead/zinc cash flow based on a detailed life of project production scheduling study. The requirements for such a study are detailed herein. The operational feasibility of the MIP solution is compared against a non-optimal approach to strategic life-of-mine scheduling. The strategic planning emphasis placed on the MIP is compared to the implementation of a life-of-mine schedules at Mount Isa using spreadsheets and other popular commercial mine schedulers.

Where the equipment, technique and materials are available for the construction of large diameter rock socketted piles, this is frequently the most economical and environmentally acceptable method of supporting very large concentrated foundation loads in geoglogically appropriate areas. This paper outlines the current approaches in Australia to design and installation of large diameter rock socketted piles. The equipment and procedures described generally reflect those developed or used by Vibro-Pile (Aust.), a company which, while installing the usual range of driven and bored piles, specializes in the design and construction of large diameter rock socketted piles and possesses special expertise in drilling in high strength rock. A high capacity crane attached drill for large diameter drilling in rock is briefly described. Discussed in detail are the construction techniques employed and structural and geomechanical design methods adopted.

"The explicit finite difference (EFD) method is used for calculating the casting temperature field during solidification. Because the time step is limited, the computational efficiency of the EFD method is lower. In order to improve the computational efficiency, a fourth-order in space and second-order in time model based on the equivalent specific heat method and the alternating direction implicit (ADI) method is established. The degree of similarity between the simulation results and the experimental results is analyzed. Este artigo apresenta a influência da temperatura e da atmosfera de secagem sobre a resistência mecânica de um aglomerado esférico, com diâmetro entre 3 mm e 8 mm, constituído de pellet feed e silicato de sódio, produzido através de pelotamento em discos e endurecido em temperaturas até 550ºC. O aglomerado obtido a partir deste processo apresenta características que permitem que o mesmo possa ser transportado a longas distâncias e manuseado até a sua utilização na sinterização. As principais técnicas experimentais utilizadas neste estudo foram difração de raios-X, espectroscopia Raman, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análise térmica. O aglomerado foi submetido à secagem em temperaturas entre 100°C e 550ºC e atmosferas constituídas de ar atmosférico e/ou CO2. Durante o processo de secagem, observou-se a influência da temperatura e da atmosfera sobre a resistência à compressão do aglomerado após exposição à água, assim como na morfologia do silicato de sódio, evidenciando uma dependência entre elas. O uso de CO2 durante a secagem mostrou-se eficiente para a formação de um aglomerado com maior resistência mecânica após exposição à água.

Science attracts the attention and interest of an individual or an industry in general only in proportion to the apparent direct application to its immediate welfare or benefit. Engineering accomplishments, as aphlied science, therefore receive more recognition than the scientific discoveries on which they are based. Even self-evident truth needs endless repetition before recognition: engineering as applied science cannot advance beyond the science on which it is founded. Scientific research, and discovery, is sometimes forced by the limitations recognized by those active in its development for the use of society and industry and sometimes results from an apparently superficially illogical curiosity about natural phenomena. Research has received inadequate support except in industries born in the laboratory, the chemical and electrical industries, from which many lessons might well be drawn by their elder associates. The rapid growth of these industries has been largely due to close cooperation of scientists and engineers. Most rapid advance is made when the research worker and the engineer keep in close touch with each other&apos;s ideas and problems. Many of the developments of modern industry are based on discoveries buried for years in scientific journals because the "time was not ripe" at their discovery. The situation with regard to utilization of coal is quite the oppositre. The fundamental facts in regard to the scientific aspects of the problem of developing the energy from coal are scarcely known. The engineer, without much scientific cooperation, has accomplished much in increasing the number of kilowatt-hours per pound of coal from 0.31 in 1919 to 0.69 in 1934, in increasing the 1000 gross ton-miles of freight hauled from 12.2 to 16.4 per ton of coal in the same period, in fuel economy in production of coke, and in developing the production of motor fuel in Germany and England by hydrogenation of coal. This lack of scientific research on the utilization of our most important natural resource, coal, has been due undoubtedly in large part to the reluctance of investigators to study the interrelationships involved in the complicated processes in which coal is used. The mining industry collects a significant amount of operational data. However, gleaning useful information from the terabytes of data is difficult, and not just because of the sheer volume of the data. Therefore, an automated tool was developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to go through data and apply very sophisticated statistical and neural network techniques, to identify the data streams that are important to a process. This paper presents results from the tool as applied to SAG mill data from a gold mine. The results were benched against commercial tool. Results indicate that there was little or no loss in performance by automating the very complicated process of neural network modeling. Therefore, the intent of the exercise, to examine if complicated modeling tasks can be automated, was realized.

Investigations over the application of hybrid comminution circuits with the High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), on the main comminution stage on the basis of the lime and cement industry, were presented in the paper. Two crushing circuits were investigated, the first HPGR-based and the other one, with conventional jaw crusher. The results presented in the article confirm that hybrid comminution circuits with the application of HPGR are innovative ones, and they assure achieving the technological and economic competitiveness in the mineral raw materials processing industry. They are much more favorable in terms of the final product fineness and capacity but insignificantly less effective about the unit energy consumption. Technological performance of conventional crushing circuit and HPGR-based one were also compared in lab scale. The circuit with HPGR application gives finer products both on crushing and grinding stages. The average particle size reduction obtained in HPGR-based circuit is as much as twice greater, comparing to the conventional crushing devices. Keywords: comminution, HPGR technology

A method of establishing the relationship between the mineralogy of a sinter and its subsequent processing behaviour in a lead blast furnace is demonstrated. It involves: 1) analyzing the Zn-spinels, hardystonite, larsenite, Pb-silicates, Pb-arsenates, Pb-(Ca)-sulphates and other femtes with an electron microprobe; 2) determining the extent of elemental substitutions in various mineral structures; 3) establishing a sequence in which the various phases formed during sintering. In this manner the relationship between the bulk chemistry of a sinter formulation and the speciation of elements into various phases in the sinter can be established. Specifically, the-substitution of Mg for Zn in hardystonite significantly influences sinter production. Mg substitution releases Zn into the surrounding matrix. This Zn reacts with the Pb-silicate to form larsenite thereby reducing the amount of Pb-silicate available for anhydrite digestion. Excessive amounts of residual anhydrite thus result if the sinter formulation is based solely on the CaO/Si& ratio.
