CRA has been actively involved in developing a bacterial oxidation process for the treatment of low grade, refractory gold resources. Success in this application is dependant on the design of large, energy efficient reactors. It was identified at an early stage, that the conventional, bottom sparged bioreactor is inherently inefficient because air must be compressed to a pressure above that at the bottom of the tank. This inefficiency increases as the size of the reactor increases. CRA has developed a novel approach to the aeration problem. In this, venturi aeration is used to aspirate air into a liquor stream. The stream is then reintroduced at the top of a draft tube bioreactor. The advantages found with this technique include · low energy requirements and high oxygen utilisations. From results at the 30 m3 scale, we predict an energy usage of -500 kWh/t sulphur oxidised at a scale of 1000 m3.

Esta técnica mostra-se como uma importante ferramenta pois supera as limitações impostas na modelagem física (quantificação e identificação de fluxos por ausência de instrumentação em escala industrial, amostragem sem representatividade) ao reproduzir de forma verossímil as repostas do sistema para importantes variáveis de controle: comprimento de gap, umidade, dispersão de tamanhos e resistência das pelotas.

An infrared study of the states of hydration of MgSO4 revealed a hitherto unreported metustable dehydration state in the temperature range just below that of the stable anhydrous salt. Infrared, thermogvavimetric, and X-ray studies indicated that the state had bisulfate and hydroxide characteristics. A formula fitting all of the experimental evidence is hydrogen-bonded Mg(OH)HSO4, or possibly the chemically equivalent 1/2 Mg(HSO4)2. Mg(OH)2 Infrared spectra of the 7, 6, 1, and OH2O states of hydration are given as well as the spectra of the newly found state which is called the bisulfate state in this paper. Thermogvavimetric studies as a function of water-vapor pressure gave an enthalpy value of 16 cal per mole, and 25 eu for the conversion of the bisulfate state to that of the anhydrous salt. The free energies of the transition varied from 1.76 to 0.18 kcal per mole as the transition temperature varied from 279° to 336°C. The bisulfate state is believed to be of importance in catalytic dehydration phenomena using MgSO4 and may be of interest because of properties in sulfating reactions differing from those of the monohydrate. Also, an analogous state may exist as a hydration state of other sulfates. ANHYDROUS magnesium sulfate is a catalyst with a high degree of specificity for the dehydration of secondary alcohols.1'2 The only product obtained at the usual operating temperature range of 360" to 400°C other than the corresponding olefin is water. Thus, the bonding of water to the anhydrous salt as well as an understanding of the hydration states of MgSO4 became of interest in attempting to understand the catalytic mechanism better. In the process of this study using infrared, X-ray, and thermogravimetric analyses a dehydration state not previously reported was found. Proof of its existence, the nature of the state, and its role, if any, in the catalytic mechanism then became of interest. This paper is concerned principally with the first two aspects of this problem. Magnesium sulfate forms many hydrates, of which the monohydrate and heptahydrate (Epsom salts)3 are most important. Other hydrates4 are known with 1-1/4,5 l-1/2, 5 2, 4, 5, 6, and 12 H2O's. The hydrates with 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 4, and 5 HzO's are unstable. This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of a loess deposit at the deep foundations test site established by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Multiple CPT, SPT, and pressuremeter tests were conducted as part of the investigation. This paper includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of common correlations used with the CPT, SPT when used for classification of loess and estimating its properties. Results show that common correlations must be used with caution as significant errors in estimation may result from using methods developed for other soil types. Laboratory testing included direct shear, triaxial, collapse, and consolidation testing, with many of the tests conducted on both vertically and horizontally oriented samples to evaluate anisotropic behavior. The results showed that strength properties could be considered to be isotropic.

The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.

A gold mine in southern China has transitioned from an open pit operation to a fully underground mine. An overhand mining method is used which requires the mined stopes to be filled with backfill having an unconfined compressive strength of at least 0.35MPa. Tailings from the process plant is deposited into separate flotation and Carbon in Leach (CIL) tailings storage facilities. The tailings has a high fines content and the thickener on site could only produce a dilute flotation tailings at a solids content of about 30 wt%. This resulted in two undesirable outcomes: the density of flotation tailings in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was significantly lower than planned so that the TSF could not store the life of mine tailings and that the backfill product had to include a high percentage of manufactured aggregate and increased cement content to achieve the required strength. This paper presents results of a tailings study which identified that the flotation TSF would be capable of storing the remaining life of mine tailings if an amended backfill product made up of 100% of flotation tailings could be introduced. A 100% tailings backfill with the addition of 8% cement was developed by classifying the tailings and using the coarser fraction in the backfill. This backfill allowed 60% of the flotation tailings to be placed underground and only the remaining 40% in the flotation TSF. A new thickener was designed and installed to thicken the tailings and rheological testing of the tailings, using a closed loop pilot plant, provided parameters to upgrade the underground reticulation system to deliver cemented backfill to stopes throughout the mine and to deliver thickened tailings to the TSF. Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department?s Bureau of Labor Statistics? Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries, and Current Population Survey. Between 1992 and 2002, 3378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 to 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992?1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002 but showed overall improvement from 1995 to 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100 000 workers. In addition, 46 598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. The research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This paper is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to supply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. A detailed discussion of open-hearth fuels is not attempted here, but certain factors peculiar to their application to this type of process are briefly indicated on the following pages. Very often an open-hearth shop is forced by economic factors to use a fuel to which its furnaces are not very well adapted, because the general fuel-allocation scheme for the works as a whole seems to demand it. Often a variable marginal supply of coke-oven gas or tar must be consumed by the open hearth, together with another fuel such as producer gas, natural gas, or oil, to fill out total requirements. OF the many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one that has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. The many excellent textbooks of physical chemistry1 provide ample material on the principles of this subject for the student of steelmaking processes; yet with- out exception those texts draw the greater part of their illustrative material from room-temperature data. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a concise review of the principles of physical chemistry that have proved useful in studies of steelmaking and at the same time to present some of the data that are essential to the application of physical chemistry to reactions at high temperatures. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be ex- pressed in fairly simple terms. Many of the equations are logarithmic, and we shall use the symbols In X and log X to represent respectively the natural and the common logarithm of X. The two are related by In X = 2.303 log X. "This scientific work presents the results of comparative tests of centrifugal concentrators with a vertical and horizontal axis of rotor spinning. The article also describes a qualitative analysis of the behavior of mineral particles in a centrifugal field with fluidization for concentrators with a horizontal axis. The analysis was aimed at studying the effect of the quantity of fluidization holes in the basket on the degree of magnetite recovery and the effect of the basket rotation speed. The experiment demonstrated that concentrators with a horizontal axis are not inferior in terms of the qualitative recovery indicators to concentrators with a vertical axis. The researches also provided facts about the wide practical application of concentrators with a horizontal rotor arrangement. INTRODUCTION Methods of gravity concentration, attractive for their ecological purity, see their revival. First of all, this is due to the invention of centrifugal concentrators with the fluidization of the layer of mineral particles. The creation of a new generation of gravitational centrifugal concentrators made it possible to achieve a tangible breakthrough toward the direction of reducing the grain size of mineral particles effectively divided by density, up to 10 µm at a high production capacity of the vessels reaching 500-600 tons per hour. Such separators enable dressing a crushed ore of flotation grade and in some cases replace the flotation process, especially in primary operations, in joint cycles. In the long term, this method of concentration should significantly expand the scope of application, replace partial flotation processing, ensure the introduction of environmentally friendly energy-saving technologies at ore-processing plants. Summarizing the international experience for the last 30 years, it can be confidently asserted that centrifugal methods of concentration have become widely used in processing schemes for the separation of finely dispersed products in the mining industry. An interest in the creation of installations using centrifugal acceleration for the separation of mineral particles by density has particularly grown. Dozens of centrifugal concentrator designs have been created and continue to be improved. Centrifugal concentrators have a number of obvious advantages, which are especially relevant today. Losses of fine gold during the process of mining are well known. Gold washers screw, spiral separators, jigging machines and sluices traditionally used in the production processes do not solve the problem of fine gold recovery. Table 1 shows the results of comparative tests of a centrifugal concentrator (ITOMAK) and other concentration equipment. According to the research conducted by the company GMRS, Krugersdorp, South Africa (2000), the initial material was gold ore crushed to 150 micrometers (90%)."

Whilst the prices of metals in nominal terms have largely remained static over the past forty years, in real terms, the primary metals industry receives very much less today for its products than in the past. Yet, it has largely managed to remain competitive, despite the fact that ore reserves are not only diminishing, but are of lower grade and higher complexity, and that there are much greater pressures on companies to be good environmental stewards. This paper examines how hydrometallurgical processing has shown itself to be highly innovative in order to remain viable both economically and environmentally. Aspects of process chemistry are discussed, and the lessons to be learned from having a good understanding of this chemistry are highlighted with reference to a number of case histories such as HPAL for nickel laterites, the Avmin/Chambishi Cosac Project, use of chloride chemistry for titanium extraction, and plant effluent treatment and recycle.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo adequar às propriedades mecânicas dos perfis ASTM A572 G60, através do estudo da influência dos parâmetros de processo de laminação e composição química do aço. Os perfis ASTM A572 G60, são utilizados nas indústrias de fabricação de torres de transmissão. A metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi o desenvolvimento de um modelamento matemático, com base na ferramenta estatística de Análise de Regressão Múltipla. Através desta ferramenta foi possível obter previsibilidade de processo e identificar os parâmetros mais influentes nas propriedades mecânicas dos perfis ASTM A572 G60, o que possibilitou a determinação da composição química ideal do aço e os melhores parâmetros de processo de laminação.

I. INTRODUCTION West Virginia has a long history of coal production.1 The state at one time led the nation in total coal production, while at the same time coal from West Virginia constituted one quarter of total U.S. coal production.2 In more recent years, however, West Virginia’s level of coal production has been reduced in comparison to that of other states due to the high relative cost of producing coal in the state.3 Another blow to the producers of coal in West Virginia is the action known as Bragg v. Robertson.4 In 1998 various individual plaintiffs, as well as a conservation group known as the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, filed a civil action under a provision of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, Pub. L. No. 95-87, §522, 91 Stat. 445 (codified at 30 U.S.C. §§1201-1328) ("SMCRA" or the "Act") that allows declaratory and injunctive relief against state and federal officials for non-compliance with the Act.5 The plaintiffs generally claimed that the Director of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection ("WVDEP") had exhibited a pattern of violating mandatory non-discretionary duties under SMCRA and the West Virginia state regulatory program.6 These non-discretionary duties involved many areas of regulation, including water quality standards, disturbance of wetlands, hydrologic reclamation plans, Approximate Original Contour ("AOC") requirements and AOC variances, post-mining land uses, contemporaneous reclamation, and as explained later, the "buffer zone rule."7 In addition to these claims against WVDEP, the plaintiffs also alleged that certain individual members of the Army Corps of Engineers (the "Corps") had failed to carry out statutory duties under the Clean Water Act (the "CWA") and the National Environmental Policy Act ("NEPA").8 Generally, the complaint stated that the Corps did not have statutory authority under the CWA to regulate valley fills created for the purpose of the disposal of waste material, i.e., the overburden associated with mountain top mining.9 Alternatively, the plaintiffs claimed that even if the Corps could regulate valley fills, the Corps violated NEPA by issuing nationwide permits without required analysis. Finally, the plaintiffs asserted that the issuance of a nationwide permit for surface mining valley fills is unlawful.10

In previous research, the laminated overburden model from the LaModel program was effectively integrated with Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) through ARMPS-like input to create a laboratory version of the new ?ARMPS-LAM? program. This program takes the basic ARMPS geometric input for defining the mining plan and loading condition, and then automatically develops, grids, runs, and analyzes a full LaModel analysis of the mining geometry to output the section stability factor (SF), all without further user input. The initial ARMPS-LAM results were encouraging with a case history classification accuracy of 55% to 71%; however, a few of the input variables that were nominally included in the SF calculation showed independent significance in the classification accuracy. Therefore, in order to further improve the accuracy of the ARMPS-LAM program, an investigation of the SFs calculated by the new ARMPS-LAM program and the ARMPS program is detailed in this paper. The initial results of a linear correlation between the ARMPS-LAM SF and the ARMPS SF showed a strong correlation (R2 = 0.88), with the ARMPS-LAM SF averaging about 8% higher. The difference in SFs between the programs were further investigated, and, ultimately, the results indicated that the laminated overburden model as implemented in ARMPS-LAM distributes relatively more load on the section pillars for depths less than about 1,000 ft and less load for depths more than 1,000 ft. The results of this research highlight the potential for improving the ARMPS-LAM program in the future by implementing a more accurate loading calculation on the section pillars.

United Taconite is an iron ore mine operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (Cliffs) located near Eveleth, Minnesota. The mine, originally known as Eveleth Taconite Mines, was purchased in December 2003 by Cliffs (70%) and Laiwu Steel (30%). The mine site, known as the Thunderbird Mine, produces taconite ore for delivery by rail to the company’s Fairlane plant, located approximately 10 miles to the south near Forbes, Minnesota. At the plant, the crude ore is ground, concentrated and processed into pellets for steel industry customers. Total pellet production capacity is about 5.4 million long tons (Ltons) per year.
