Two methods are developed whereby; (1) mineralogic data can be arranged in order of typicality, and (2) mineralogic data external to a model can be compared with the model and the degrees of association computed. Thirty arbitrarily selected base metal mining districts in the conterminous United States were classified as copper, lead, or zinc districts on the basis of tonnage of the major base metal produced. For each of the copper, lead, and zinc districts binary-occurrence distributions were compiled for primary (unoxidized) and secondary (oxidized) minerals. Primary and secondary minerals were then arranged in order of decreasing typicality. Model copper districts are most typified by primary chalcopyrite, pyrite, and secondary malachite. Model lead districts are most typified by primary galena, quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, and secondary anglesite and cerargyrite. Model zinc districts are most typified by primary sphalerite, galena, pyrite, quartz, and secondary smithsonite and cerus-site. The Park City district was removed from the model and its primary and secondary mineralogy was compared with the model copper, lead, and zinc districts. The primary mineralogy of the Park City district is about equally associated with the model copper and lead districts, but the secondary mineralogy is much more akin to the model copper districts. Thus, with respect to the model data, the geochemical target presented by the Park City district resembles a copper district more closely than a lead district.

In view of the shortage of soft water all over the Middle East countries, seawater may be used to replace the fresh water in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process required about 7 m3 of fresh water/ ton ore. This article aimed to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation process of four important mineral commodities. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential, zero point of charge and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The individual effects of different cations and anions that are predominant in seawater, within their more or less actual concentrations were studied on individual mineral and on groups of them. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, in the anionic circuit could be controlled by soda ash addition to the pulp before the anionic collector. The addition of sodium silicate improved the floatation selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At the optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate recovery of 83% with a grade of 34% P2O5, with 0.61%MgO, which from an ore assaying (25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO).

THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C. In this paper, the rutile TiO2 were prepared under air, Ar and H2 calcination atmosphere by low temperature hydrolysis using Tetrabutyl titanate (C16H36O4Ti) as raw material. Powers were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The influence of the calcination atmosphere on the photocatalytic reactivity of rutile TiO2 for oxygen production was investigated. The photocatalytic reactivity of rutile TiO2 prepared under air, Ar and H2 atmosphere was compared under ultraviolet and visible light radiation with Fe3+ (c=8.0mmol.L-1) as electron acceptor. The results showed that rutile TiO2 prepared under Ar and H2 atmosphere had higher photocatalytic activity for oxygen production than that prepared under air atmosphere. The oxygen production rates under ultraviolet irradiation were 427.5, 378.2 and 357.0µmol.l-1h-1 respectively when rutile TiO2 was prepared under Ar, H2 and air atmosphere. The oxygen production rates under visible light irradiation were 78.2, 52.2 and 13.5µmol.l-1h-1 respectively when rutile TiO2 was prepared under Ar, H2 and air atmosphere.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

The oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is discussed from several viewpoints. Limitations of our present knowledge are pointed out, and several points where further information would be of special interest are mentioned.Firstly, some properties of minerals and their effect on oxidation are discussed. Properties of different species, such as crystal structure, lattice bonding, and "metallic" properties are mentioned, and then the effect of variation within a given species is discussed. The effect of physical factors, especially particle size, is also considered. Other variables discussed include the importance of solution composition, and its effect on the nature and rate of reaction, and the use of various oxidising agents. Some factors concerned with the whole system, such as temperature, pulp density and stirring rate are then considered.Finally, the nature of various oxidation products is discussed with reference to the kinetics of reaction and the nature of the rate limiting step. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to electrochemical explanations of the reaction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the factors governing the rate of oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is a prerequisite for the effective control of many ore treatment operations. Rapid oxidation of sulphides is usually desired during the leaching of sulphide ores and concentrates, but in the cyanidation of gold ores, or in the leaching of uranium ores, any oxidation of sulphides may be regarded as an undesirable side reaction. RECENT research work in the flotation concentration of minerals has been concerned mainly with flotation reagents and the mechanism by which collecting reagents are held to the surface of certain mineral particles. The fundamental question of why air bubbles cling to properly prepared mineral surfaces is usually dismissed with the statement that the surface is air-avid or water-repellent. In my article in MINING AND METALLURGY for June, 1932, I showed theoretically that surface tension relationships govern bubble attachment in Rotation. This explanation has not been accepted by many; probably be¬cause the difficulty of measuring solid-solution surface tensions prevented obtaining experimental evidence. If the surface tensions involved in the system [solution, mineral, air bubble] are responsible for attachment of the air bubble to the mineral, any change in the surface tensions should cause a corresponding change in the attachment of the air bubble. An example in which the mineral-solution surface tension could be varied was found with mercury. When mercury is in contact with solutions of certain electrolytes the surface tension at the contact of mercury and solution can be altered by electrical polarization of the mercury. The surface tension rises to a maximum as the mercury is given an increasing negative potential and then decreases with further increase in potential. "Geological exploration involves the collection and analysis of a wide variety of information. A basic problem in interpretation is to determine the interrelationship s of the different data. A number of statistical methods can be applied to this problem, provided that subsets of data can be selected.We have recently developed a set of interactive computer programs which provide the cap ability to quickly examine a large set of data, and may be used by people with little previous computer experience. There are two main stages in using this system. First is selection of subsets of data , by applying various tests on the values of given items. This includes matching specific entries in descriptive fields, and minimum - maximum tests on numeric fields. The second stage is basic statistical analysis and data display , including histograms, 2-D scalier plots, probability (cumulative frequency) plots, and correlation matrices. All output can be viewed on a computer terminal, and important parameters changed to produce the most effective display for use in interpretation.This system has been applied to a number of different exploration problems. An example was the determination of the nature and extent of mineralization of a gold prospect in the Queen Charlotte Islands, from drill-hole data. With the aid of the computer programs , a mineralized zone was defined, and locations for further exploration identified."

The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit occurs in pervasively altered andesite of the Waipupu Formation and in the Waiharakeke Dacite. The unaltered, post-mineral Whakamoehau Andesite overlies these units. The Empire zone of the Golden Cross deposit contains a stockwork which is currently mined by open pit methods, and a series of veins that are mined underground. Alteration envelops both the underground and open pit mineralisation. The core of the alteration zone contains silicification, as quartz veins, and adularia. Shallow portions of the system contain illite-smectite and a thermally unstable chlorite, tentatively identified as corrensite, which pass downward into illite and chlorite, respectively. Replacement calcite occurs widely throughout the altered zone; pyrite is nearly ubiquitous. This alteration assemblage indicates formation from near-neutral alkali chloride waters. A late, post-mineralisation alteration assemblage of calcite, smectite, illitesmectite, kaolinite and siderite presumably formed from weakly acidic, steam-heated CO2-rich waters.   We have identified eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren.

RECENT interest in thermoelectric devices has been directed toward studies of the properties of thermoelectric materials of semiconducting solid compounds with little attention given to ionic and semiconducting liquids such as aqueous solutions, fused salts, and mattes. One type of thermoelectric system is the thermocell: a nonisothermal galvanic cell with two identical electrodes at different temperatures connected by an electrolyte bridge. An electromotive force, v, is generated which is a function of the electrode reactions and the properties of the electrolyte according to the Eastman' equation: where S* is the entropy change of the system arising from the electrode reactions and by heat transferred by ion migration and by thermal conduction. The quantity nF is the product of equivalents passed and Faraday's constant. A value of S* of 23.06 cal per "C is equivalent to 1 mv-Faraday per "C. The symbol, a, is used for dV/dT in analog to the See-beck coefficient of solid-state thermoelements. de Bethune2 has calculated the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force of a large number of nonisothermal aqueous cells from measurements on the nonisothermal temperature coefficients of the standard hydrogen electrode, combined with data on the isothermal temperature coefficients of half-cells tabulated in the literature. Values of these coefficients (a) in de Bethune's compilation ranged up to 3 mv per C. In particular he reported a value of +2.059 mv per "C at 25'C for the cell: Fe (aqueous, unit activity) (aqueous, unit activity) written for the hot-electrode reaction. The positive sign indicates that the hot electrode is positive (an "n-type thermocell"). In analog to a solid-state p-n system, it would be possible to couple two thermocells together to form a system in which the figure of merit could be calculated by adding the temperature coefficients according to the relationship described by offee:' where a is the Seebeck coefficient in volts per "C, p is the specific resistivity in ohm-cm, and K is the thermal conductivity in watts per cm "C. Even though ionic systems have rather high electrical resistivities compared with semiconducting and metallic systems, it was felt that a preliminary study of one ionic system should be made to establish some basis for evaluating the possibility of a p-n thermocell for energy conversion. Accordingly the Fe", Fe"' system was studied as a possible component for a p-n system. A glass system was constructed consisting of two vertical water-jacketed tubes connected by a horizontal tube, Fig. 1. Platinum-black electrodes 1 cm by 1 cm in dimension were inserted in each vertical tube with thermometers to register the electrode-compartment temperatures. The temperature of the electrode compartments was controlled by circulating water from thermostatted baths around the electrode compartments. The electromotive force of the cell was then read by a potentiometer for zero current as a function of the temperature of the hotter electrode. Current output of the cell for varying external loads was also measured. The cell resistance was measured by means of a bridge circuit with 10,000 cps signal and oscilloscope. Resistance measurements were converted to specific resistivity by calibrating the cell with a solution of known conductivity.

In 1951 the Federal Bureau of Mines became interested in the reports of copper-nickel mineralization in northern Minnesota. Several outcrops on the north side of the Duluth gabbro in the Kawishiwi River area were sampled by the Federal Bureau of Mines and George M. Schwartz of the Minnesota Geological Survey. Because these samples showed appreciable amounts of copper and nickel, a 100-pound sample of an un-altered outcrop was obtained for metallurgical testing. Results from this preliminary work were all favorable; therefore, in the fall of 1953 the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled three holes near the outcrop of the con-tact between the Duluth gabbro and the Algoma granite. A total of 686 feet of NX size hole was drilled, and 100 percent of the core was recovered. Each hole intersected the contact, and the strike and dip for that locality were established. The core was split, and half was used for analyses and further metallurgical tests; the remainder was retained for permanent record in the Bureau of Mines core-storage warehouse.

In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. A detailed planning and design project has been undertaken at Callide Coalfields, as the first step towards implementing a fully integrated mine graphics system. The system, when fully installed, will support applications ranging from business graphics through to terrain modelling and computer-aided design. The conceptual design which will accomplish this is presented. The problems of retrospectively applying graphics standards to existing applications are discussed, and a practical solution outlined.

"The property of Moneta Porcupine Mines, Limited, consists of a group of eight claims in Tisdale township, Ontario. It includes part of the townsite of the town of Timmins, and adjoins the west boundaries of the Hollin_ger Consolidated and Mace properties. The Moneta property was first staked in 1909, about a year after the first discovery of gold in the Porcupine camp. In 1910 the Moneta Company was incorporated and some preliminary exploratory work performed by Nova Scotia Mines of Cobalt. In 1912 English interests advanced $90,000 for diamond drilling and underground work. One drill hole gave high assays, but apparently the records were poorly kept or the cores were interchanged. As a consequence, when underground exploration was undertaken in 1923 it was directed south rather than west and no ore was found . In 1924 about 5,000 feet of diamond drilling was done in the southern part of the property, but without intersecting ore.In 1931 W. E. Segsworth assumed the direction of the property. Diamond drilling commenced on August 18, 1936. The first hole intersected 9.9 feet of ore averaging 1.23 oz. gold a ton. Underground work was started early in 1937. A mill was erected in the autumn and the first gold brick was poured January 29, 1938.The Moneta mill began operation on January 2, 1938, and the following table gives a summary of the production to June 30, 1943, when the mill was closed."

THE purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of agitation upon the flotation of chal-cocite. It is believed that the concentration of collector which is required to produce a water-repellent surface upon the mineral is determined among other things by the rate of collector diffusion through an impeding film of more or less stagnant fluid. Its thickness depends upon the intensity of agitation. In the first part of this study a method is developed for determining the thickness of the fluid film upon a polished surface of synthetic chalcocite. The film thickness is then determined as precisely as possible under three readily reproducible condi-tions of agitation intensity. These determinations serve as a quantitative evaluation of agitation. In Part 2 it is demonstrated that in solutions of lime at PH 10.5 and in the absence of air or dissolved oxygen the concentration of collector required to develop water-repellency upon the surface in any given time is a function of the fluid film thickness, and that after about 10 min the relation becomes linear. This points to the possibility that the collector ions may be involved in a diffusional process through the fluid film. In Part 3 it is shown that where air is present more collector is required to produce water-repellency than for the case in which air is excluded. Next, it is shown that for the latter case the most minute amount of sodium sulphide suffices to preclude development of water-repellency. Both oxygen and sulphide are in a sense, therefore, depres- sants for chalcocite in a lime solution at PH 10.5. When oxygen and sulphide are present simultaneously there is a region of minimum critical collector concentration for water-repellency which is very markedly lower than the concentration where oxygen alone or where sulphide alone is present. Moreover, this minimum appears to be identical with the collector concentration which is required where sulphide and oxygen are both excluded. This would appear to indicate that in certain ranges of concentration of oxygen and sulphide, each cancels the effect of the other. The range of concentration of solution for this effect in solutions saturated with oxygen is a function of the agitation intensity. Thus we are led to believe that a chemical reaction involving sulphide and oxygen occurs at the surface of the chalcocite. Part 4 of this study is a further development of this idea and some of its consequences from an electrochemical standpoint, while in Part 5 the disappearance of sulphide from pulps of several minerals is noted with an indication that both dissolved oxygen and the mineral are necessary, the reaction being catalytic or pseudocatalytic. Part 1. Determination of Fluid Film Thickness The Fluid Film Concept: The hindrance to the diffusion of collector to the surface of the chalcocite is a barrier of stagnant fluid in the vicinity of the surface. It is the same barrier that limits the rate of transfer of heat, the rate of solution of dissolving crystals, or any of the other rates pertaining to chemical engineering unit operations in which the film resistance to diffusion plays a principal role.' Fluid films are present upon the surface to an extent which varies with the geometry and intensity of agitation. They result from the fact that in the region within the fluid near a surface, motion is entirely parallel to it. Ore textures in Australian BIF-derived ores are quite complex and have formed the basis for ore genesis models, which includes hypogene upgrading or supergene upgrading then regional metamorphism for the microplaty hematite ores and supergene upgrading for the martite-goethite ores. Despite a high level of ore texture knowledge, little is known about the spatial distribution of ore textures within deposits or their relationship to downstream processing. This paper describes a new iron ore texture classification system to better understand the vertical textural zonation characteristics of Australian BIF-derived deposits, the interpreted role of recent supergene upgrading processes on modifying primary ore textures and their implications for downstream mineral processing. The iron ore textural classification scheme presented uses textural groupings defined on the basis of similarities in mineralogy, ore texture, porosity, mineral associations and hardness. The scheme is non-genetic and has been successfully applied to deposits in the Pilbara, Yilgarn and Gawler cratons. The main ore texture groups include dense martite/hematite, microplaty hematite, microplaty hematite-goethite, martite-goethite, goethite-martite and goethite-rich. Each group can be further subdivided into physically hard to softer subcategories. The ore textural groups can be divided into those interpreted to be associated with primary replacement of BIF and secondary textures resulting from more recent modification by near-surface hydration or dehydration processes. A schematic vertical section through BIF-derived deposits consists (from surface) of detritals underlain by a carapace, both of which may have been eroded, followed by a hydrated zone with replacement of primary ore martite and microplaty hematite by vitreous goethite. The hydrated zone is underlain by 0.2 - 6 m thick zones of intense dehydration and textural infilling of porosity with hematite and hydrohematite. Immediately below the dehydration zone is a strong zone of leaching, where more porous and friable ore textures occur, followed underneath by a gradational contact with primary ore. Secondary supergene processes can impact on beneficiation with hydration and leaching resulting in more difficult density separations at the concentrator stage due to reductions in density differences between ore and gangue and loss of heavy media into pores. Supergene modification of primary BIF-derived ore textures can substantially change lump metallurgical properties, with hydration and dehydration favourably increasing lump yield but reducing resistance to thermal shock whilst leaching will give the opposing outcome. The lump properties of ore textural groups appear to be relatively consistent within and between the iron ore deposits examined.

Coal mine roof shales fracture preferentially at slickensided surfaces because of weak or nonexistent adhesion between two slickensided rock surfaces. The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research was to characterize chemically the thin film of smooth, glossy material that makes up the slickenside. This material was analyzed by electron spectroscopy and ion scattering spectrometry while in place on the rock surface and by standard methods of quantitative chemical analysis on concentrate removed from the rock. These analyses showed that the chemistry and mineralogy of the slickensides are similar to that of the adjacent shale.

FOR a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At -the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture f propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods f manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual -blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position- for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this practice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface f each blade must be chipped too the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy, as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the' work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin f the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days f foundry work and about the same length of, time for the machining. Through the use f the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity, with any particular propeller-wheel design,
