Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson Counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducing bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the pores of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900's to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also expanded reserves in a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore occurrences. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of June 1, 1984, a total of 29.87 million mt (29.4 million long tons) of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos River. Duval Corporation has produced more than 88 percent of that total.

LEACHING of mined-out areas at the Arizona property of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., was started on Jan. 20, 1.937, and by July 1, 1938, 10,000,000 lb. of copper had been produced by this method. Leaching operations at present are confined to the western portion of the ore body and over an area of approximately ten acres. The ore in this area was extremely high in pyrite and the copper content, which averaged slightly in excess of 1 per cent, was the result of incomplete secondary enrichment by solutions which apparently worked laterally from the main ore body. Above the ore was an unaltered zone of primary or protore averaging 125 ft. in thickness and containing approximately 0.6 per cent copper. Above this was the capping or leached zone averaging 50 ft. thick.

INTRODUCTION The project financing described elsewhere in this book is available to major mining companies on the basis of a strong balance sheet, a significant equity position in a project of proven feasibility, and a demonstrated ability to bring ore deposits into production. "Junior" mining companies, which are most active in Canada, Australia, the US, and South Africa, by definition do not meet these criteria. In many cases, junior companies will need to raise money simply to cover the costs of acquiring and exploring potential deposits. In what follows we will look primarily at junior financing practices in the US and Canada, although the same general principles will apply in Australia and South Africa. The principal vehicles for junior mine company financing are limited partnerships, the private placement of securities and debentures, and public offering of securities, and property deals with stronger companies, in the form of leases, earn-ins and co-ventures. The cost (in terms of dollars or equity) and, to some extent, the applicability of using these difficult approaches varies with the stage of development of the property and with the corresponding degree of risk to the investor. Much junior company fund raising is, in fact, "interim" financing in that it allows the company to improve its properties and develop its assets to the stage where more favorable financing arrangements may become available. Companies will therefore often use several of the approaches described above during the development life of a specific property. LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS Limited partnerships and syndications are a popular way of structuring the initial private financing of mine developments because of their attractive tax consequences for the well-to-do investor. Costs of exploration and development can in many countries be passed through as deductions to the limited partners, who are thus able to gamble on a possible windfall at little real cost. In addition to private Canadian funds, much German money flowed into Canadian exploration ventures on this basis, but stopped in 1982 due to economic conditions in West Germany. In the US, recent regulations have, in the great majority of cases, taken away the ability to "shelter" income in mining limited partnerships. Deductions taken by the individual investor cannot exceed the amount of money he actually has at risk. Nevertheless, the allowable deductions are still attractive and some of the major mining companies are now beginning to look at limited partnerships as a vehicle for attracting additional exploration funding. Ranchers Exploration and Development has successfully put together several drilling funds on this basis. THE PRIVATE PLACEMENT Initial funding for the acquisition and preliminary exploration of prospects is often accomplished through a private placement of unregistered securities or, where it is not a problem to carry debt on the statement, by a private placement sale of debentures. A fledgling company wishing to do a public offering may well be advised by an underwriter to accomplish a small private placement as a precondition of the larger offering. In this way, the sale of the registered securities is not inhibited by the company starting out with a debt-ridden balance sheet and no demonstrated ability to secure the additional financing generally necessary beyond the proceeds of that offering. In the US, the securities offered in a private placement are not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) but are restricted as to their resale, and could be further restricted by a underwriting agreement

In this paper, several commonly used computer truck dispatching criteria are evaluated. A computer-oriented truck dispatching and production simulator was developed to provide data for comprehensive cross comparison among the dispatching criteria. The definitions, primary considerations, characteristics, and performances of these dispatching criteria were investigated. From the simulation results, it was concluded that, in general, no one criterion can dominate all others. All basic dispatching criteria including minimizing truck waiting time, minimizing shovel waiting time, minimizing truck saturation, maximizing truck momentary productivity, or truck routes optimization provide a local optimal solution. To obtain a direct global optimization solution for this complex stochastic process does not appear to be likely. Therefore, the search for an optimal dispatching criterion that will fit all conditions may not be realistic. However, based on the simulation results of the mine operation, several dispatching criteria which have good potential to increase performance can be selected. It may be necessary to search for the best combination of these truck dispatching criteria for a given situation. For example, a truck flow measurement such as the truck clustering factor at shovels can be used as a switch parameter to change from one criterion to another. The values for the switch parameter at which actions should be taken to change the criterion can be established through simulation programs.

For the first time in the history of shaft sinking, the concept of mid-shaft loading has been used. By making use of available hoisting capacity during drilling periods, development work on underground hoist chambers and ore-pass and ventilation by-pass systems at Vaal Reefs South gold mine is being done simultaneously with sinking. This factor, together with the unusual configuration and design of the twin-shaft system at Vaal Reefs South, and the use of raise borers in the installation of ore-pass and ventilation by-pass systems, will mean that the shaft will be commissioned at least a year earlier than would have been possible had conventional methods been used. The possibilities of mid-shaft loading in reducing the time normally taken by shaft service development were recognized by Anglo American Corp. consulting engineers and Shaft Sinkers Pty. Ltd., the company which is sinking both shafts at Vaal Reefs.

Wet sticky iron ore poses particular difficulties in every aspect of the material handling process. Material hang-ups in bins, pipes and chutes; carry-back and spillage due to insufficient belt cleaning; clogging of screens; malfunctioning of crushers as well as rat holing of gravity reclaimed stockpiles are all predominantly due to the inherent cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore (Roberts, 1993). Limited understanding and quantitative measures on the stickiness of such a material significantly lower the mining operation efficiency.This research aims to investigate the cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore on physical modelling, experimental techniques and numerical implementation. Initially, the suitable bridging mechanism that contributes to the cohesive and adhesive forces within the iron ore material was identified (Hering, Martin and Stohrer, 1989; Rumpf, 1958). A cohesion/adhesion energy density factor based contact model was then introduced to describe the stickiness of the material. Secondly, an experimental system was proposed to directly test the stickiness of the material. Such a system is able to obtain both the cohesive/adhesive shear force and tensile force of the material at a specific moisture content. Lastly, the implementation of the proposed cohesion/adhesion model into the discrete element modelling (DEM) software was also discussed. A cohesion/adhesion calibration for modelling wet sticky iron ore in DEM was then conducted to ensure the material modelled in the simulation is reflective of the reality.From the study, understanding of the cohesion/adhesion characteristics of the wet iron ore material is significantly enhanced. Experimental and numerical outcomes can be directly applied for better designing or optimising the material handling processes that involve wet sticky iron ore. The objective of this US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) research was to determine the technical feasibility, principles and effectiveness of a combination energy method for drilling and cutting hard rocks. Experimental test results of microwave heating and drilling in basalt and granodiorite are given. The experiments were performed with pilot-scale, commercially available equipment employing microwave energy at a standard industrial frequency of 2.45 GHz. The data indicate that penetration rates, well in excess of the state of the art, are possible.

A method is given for checking pore volume reserve estimates and transient water inflzix factors utilizing early well performance. Principal applications are based on the observation that there is a convenient transient time-range in terms of well spacing in which observed pressure drop will give a good indication of fluid-in-place. Primary quantity determined is a porosity-feet value applicable in the vicinity of an observation well. Checks on porosity or net pay thickness and permeability values also are obtained. These are particularly valuable in improving quality of interpretive factors entering into pore-volume reserve determinations for larger fields. In smaller fields, direct determination of total field reserves and approximate location of boundaries may be made in some cases. Well interference and production data plus a build-up curve on the observation well are needed. The build-up curve may be taken at any time. Field applications are given. The method can be applied with the completion of the second well on a new discovery or to older reservoirs by major changes in withdrawal rates from a local area. Appropriate test length permits results to be obtained with equal accuracy on widely spaced wells. Criteria for optimizing test conditions are given. Provision is made for various boundary and well effects including incomplete observation well build-up. INTRODUCTION Due to low quality data, initial pore volume reserve and water influx estimates may often vary by a factor of two or more from results obtained at a later date. Unfortunately, by conventional methods, more reliable answers from performance usually are not available until after most significant economic decisions have been made. Furthermore, in older reservoirs, uncertainties may still exist as to original oil-in-place, recovery factors and residual oil saturations due to incomplete or inaccurate performance data. This paper outlines situations and appropriate arrangements of basic transient theory whereby well interference data can be utilized to improve the quality of estimates under certain conditions. In addition to production data on offset producers, key information required is a measured pressure drop at an observation well, corrected for any incomplete build-up due to previous production, plus a formation capacity value derived from a conventional pressure build-up plot on the observation well. The method, as outlined, is strictly applicable only to a horizontal single-layered system of uniform rock characteristics containing a homogeneous fluid of low and constant compressibility. However, under the set of test conditions devised, requirements can usually be relaxed so that it should be applicable to most low permeability gas, water and undersaturated oil reservoirs. This is an area where more reliable information is certainly needed. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS A, B, C and F as subscripts or in the text refer to producing Well A, observation Well B, a more remote producing Well C and field boundary F. Combinations such as AB refer to distances and dimensionless times in terms of distances between these points, while single letters refer to distances and dimensionless times in terms of the well-bore or field radius. Gold mining cyanide-bearing solutions can pose a risk, cause significant wildlife deaths and adverse public relations and result in non-compliance with regulatory conditions. The International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code) was developed as a voluntary code to encourage industry-wide improvements in managing cyanide responsibly. The Code requires design and implementation of robust monitoring programs for compliance under the following standards of practice: 4.1, 4.4 and 4.9. A robust monitoring regime can be complicated as each processing and tailing system is different. The following systems are commonly used in Australia: carbon-in-leach (CIL); carbon-in-pulp (CIP); heap leach process ponds; tailing waste disposal systems; peripheral discharge, central discharge and in-pit disposal. Some terrestrial wildlife can be denied access by fencing tailing storage facilities (TSFs) or other physical barriers, therefore limiting wildlife interaction with cyanide-bearing tailing and solutions to mainly birds and bats. While wildlife monitoring programs for processing and TSFs contain similar core attributes, it is necessary to adapt monitoring to take into account the site-specific features of each system. These core attributes are discussed in this paper, with reference made to cyanide concentration and associated methodologies. The issue is considerably complicated if tailing solutions are deemed or discovered to be toxic to wildlife. Essentially cyanides are required to be measured to gain an understanding of the concentrations to which wildlife may be exposed. This usually equates to measuring the cyanide concentration of solutions entering and leaving a tailing system. To assess the risk to wildlife presented by tailing and heap leach systems it is necessary to monitor both the hazard (cyanide concentrations) and the exposure (live wildlife species, presence and interaction). These tasks need not be arduous and a system of simple frequent monitoring has been developed and implemented for Code compliance. The wildlife monitoring developed by Donato Environmental Services (DES) and used at mining operations departs from the industry norm. It documents observer effort, live wildlife presence, habitat and behaviour in a tailing system, as well as deaths and carcasses. A greater understanding of wildlife cyanide toxicosis associated with this monitoring approach will enable mining companies to adopt a proactive approach to significantly reduce, or preferably eliminate, the impact on wildlife and assist in gaining Code compliance.

A mineral survey of 8,300 acres of the 24,980-acre Burnt Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID 45-12), was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The study area is located in Custer County, ID, 90 miles northwest of Idaho Falls. No mines, claims, or prospects are in the study area. The northern half of the study area and adjacent lands to the north, northeast, and east are or were recently under oil and gas lease, Basalt and latite-andesite of the Challis Volcanics predominate in the study area. Several hundred feet east of the study area is a quarry in talus of Mississippian-age limestone that was used for sized 100-pound rock fill in the Old Dry Creek Reservoir dam. Two samples, one taken at the quarry and the other at a limestone outcrop on East Fork Burnt Creek, have CaC03 content in the range of 90 to 95 percent, and is suitable as the limestone component of Portland cement, However, limestone outside the study area could supply foreseeable demand. Lead- silver mineralization has been observed in Paleozoic carbonate rocks elsewhere in the Lost River Range, but these rocks do not occur in the study area.

The Greens Creek Ore Bodies are located approximately 18 miles southwest of Juneau, Alaska in an area on Admiralty Island classified as a non-wilderness national monument. An area-wide stream sediment geochemistry program targeted the deposit in October of 1973. Today, after 37,000 meters of combined surface and underground diamond drilling, three ore zones are known to exist with total reserves approaching 4.1 million tonnes. Lying within moderately folded metasediments of an undetermined age, these orebodies are thought to be of seafloor exhalite orgin and contain unusual and impressive amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper.

"Indian coal industry is the world's third largest in terms of production and fourth largest in terms of proven coal resources. Indian coal deposits are generally of high ash content varying from 24 to 50%. The coking coal reserves of India constitute about 12% of the total coal inventory, and the coals are washed in washeries, before being used for metallurgical purposes. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells. Extensive studies were carried out for understanding the performance of an operating conventional flotation plant. The performance studies revealed that appreciable quantity of clean coal is being lost in the tailings due to varied reasons and the required quantity and quality was not achieved. In this study, laboratory Flotation experiments were carried out to examine the cleaning characteristics of the said tailing and to determine the effective process parameters for recovery of clean coal at desired ash level ( 16-17%). Response Surface Methodology was applied to investigate the operating conditions of the Froth Flotation for modeling and optimization. Primary study reflects that there is a possibility to recover clean coal at 16-17% ash level with a yield of about 60-70% from that Flotation tailing of feed ash about 28%.INTRODUCTIONMost of the Indian coking coals are difficult in cleaning characteristics and high ash content due to its drift origin and its age of formation for more than 225 million years. Indian coking coal reserve is limited about 12% of total coal reserve. The minerals are homogeneously mixed with the coal macerals. The open cast mining practice and mechanized mining methods are being adopted to meet the increasing demands of coals resulting in generation of more coal fines and subsequently the quality is deteriorated. Indian good quality coking coal reserves of higher seams are fast depleting and hence coking coals of difficult cleaning characteristics of lower seams (LVC) are being now explored. Due to increased mechanization of coal mines to cope up the increased demand and followed by size reduction of lower seam coals in search of better liberation , the coal fines are increasing by leaps and bounds. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells."

Operating and research personnel at U.S. Steel's Pilotac concentrator have evolved specifications for magnetic separators suitable for use in beneficiation of Mesabi magnetic taconite. These specifications were developed as a result of investigations into the operating and metallurgical problems at the Pilotac concentrator over a period of some ten years. This paper discusses primary magnetic separator specifications, but much of the information is also pertinent to secondary and tertiary magnetic separators. Of particular significance is the proposal of a new basis for specifying the magnetic field which includes consideration of both field strength and field gradient. Other areas of discussion include flowsheet service, operating conditions such as drum speed and pulp level, tank configuration, magnet strength including field gradient, sleeve bearing design, designation of corrosion resistant materials and other details that result in a metallurgically efficient machine that has low repair and maintenance requirements. The mechanical and metallurgical design of magnetic separators at the Pilotac plant, Minnesota Ore Operations, United States Steel Corp. has progressed from the original single-stage, belt-type machines to the present multiple-stage, drum-type units, In ten years of operation, the plant operating and research personnel, in consultation with manufacturers, have made design changes to improve mechanical, electrical and magnetic features to meet process needs as flowsheet designs developed and to incorporate new permanent magnet materials as they became available. Separator specifications were an end result of this effort. The latest specifications which were developed for the Minnesota Ore Operations' plant were not all-inclusive listings; they covered only those points indicated by plant experience. For example, magnet pole piece design and dimensions were not stated. The manufacturers were given freedom to use any design as long as the field pattern was as specified. The selection of the items to be included in the specifications was undoubtedly influenced by particular conditions at Pilotac such as composition of plant water, concentration characteristics of the ore, repair and maintenance facilities available and the research programs that had been conducted. Only the developments leading to the specifications for a primary or "cobber" magnetic separator are presented in this paper. However, the same general concepts are used to specify secondary and tertiary separators. The areas of interest discussed include flowsheet service, tank configuration, magnet design, bearings, materials of construction, and some minor mechanical details. FLOWSHEET SERVICE The primary magnetic separators in the Pilotac Concentrator flowsheet are located after the first stage of grinding as shown in Fig. 1.

Batch experiments in a 0.6 m diameter mill have shown that improvements of about 13 per cent in the efficiency of energy utilisation can be realised in ball mills by replacing 25 per cent of the ball charge by an equivalent volume of cost-free critical size pebbles from AG/SAG mills. For a mill of a given size, speed and charge filling, the rate of size reduction of ore particles depends on (i) the frequency of grinding media collisions (ii) the probability of capture of ore particles between the colliding grinding media (iii) the probability of fracture of the captured particles. The probability of fracture depends on the magnitude of collision energy. The distribution of collision energy into shear and impact events determines the relative strengths of attrition breakage and impact breakage. The efficiency of energy utilisation depends on which of the two mechanisms of breakage is more desirable in a particular milling stage. In this paper collision data from a series of DEM simulations of a mill charged with steel media and a mixture of steel media and pebbles is presented in energy spectra and spatial distribution maps. The data provides the necessary detail to elucidate the improvements in the efficiency of energy utilisation in ball mills when using a mixture of pebbles and steel media.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.
