C URRENT practice in the zinc concentrate roasting plant of The Consolidated Mining arid Smelting Company of Canada Limited, at Trail, B.C., involves passing the furnace effluent gases through an electrostatic precipitator for the recovery of dust. After removal of the dust the gas is treated for recovery of sulphur dioxide by conversion into sulphuric acid ( 1). However. as roasting techniques improved, and furnace productivity in-creased, the rated capacity of the precipitator was exceeded and it was necessary to consider various means of improving the dust recovery. A study of methods indicated that a baghouse using silicone-treated glass fabric, might be suitable for this particular application. Glass fabric was chosen because the temperature of the roaster effluent gases would range from 450°F to 500°F and tempering air was undesirable to avoid dilution of the sulphur dioxide gas.

This paper call attention to increasing ratio of oxygen depletion from atmosphere besides the global worries about CO2 concentration increase in the atmosphere. It highlights the big mistake in considering Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS, as a way to reduce the increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. As a hypothetical example it presents an existing pseudo-ecosystem of manufacturing that has real windows of opportunity to increase its share in the global materials production industry, even in highly industrialized countries. As a suggestion and example the author point out possibilities to almost fulfill the proposed simple rules to be considered inside an ecosystem of manufacturing utilizing the production of steel via biomass versus fossil coal. A relevant and difficult rule to be attained in a quasi-ecosystem of manufacture is to be a near zero atmosphere oxygen depletion integrated process. The industrial alternatives that utilizes the actual photosynthesis are the ones that can reach a higher ecosystem of manufacture’s index. It is presented an ideal integrated steelmaking process where the gaseous, liquids and solid residues generated in one part of the system are or can be utilized in the other parts of the same system. A potential ecosystem of manufacture to produce primary iron is illustrated in the paper.

The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. "During the fall of 1993, a new Pill-based control strategy was installed in the B grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. The control strategy was first evaluated on a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG), which permitted the discrimination between more than a dozen possible control alternatives. Once the final choice was made the necessary instruments were purchased and installed. The control strategy was configured on the plant computer and is planned to be commissioned shortly.This paper summarizes the control strategy, the design procedure, the installation and the controller tuning. Some preliminary problems posed by the process prior to implementation are also presented.IntroductionIn 1990 the GRAIIM (french acronym for Research Group on Computer Applications to the Mineral Industry) of Laval University started a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). "During the past century, the development of vehicular transportation has benefitted tremendously from the performance improvement in engines in a situation where low-cost, plentiful fuel supplies were the order of the day. Engine advances were enhanced by and also dictated fuel modification to better adapt the energy source to the power plant.In discussing the several aspects of the change in approach from ""an engine and its fuel to a fuel and its engine"", the authors touch on the following areas:1. Description of an engine concept that provides the needed flexibility in fuel appetite at good efficiency to cope with future requirement s.2. The constraints placed on liquid fuel resource energy utilization efficiency by special engine-required fuel properties and the fuel efficiency of the various engine types available.3. Future vehicle engine fuel sources. This review will put into perspective the problem associated with the net energy available from future fuel sources under extensive research and development at present.4. Octane rating is an empirical engine test method that evaluates a gasoline's resistance to spontaneous ignition or ""knock."" Cetane is based on a different engine test, which determines a diesel fuel's ease of spontaneous ignition . High cetane number enhances cold starting and permits high-speed diesel engine operation. As one would expect, the fuels in current use cover a band when the two values, octane and cetane, are plotted against each other."

Most coal mine roofs in the Appalachian region consist of laminated shale, which is prone to brittle failure. Accurate modeling of shale roofs is vital for studying cutter failures of these shale roofs, and ordinary and formational bedding planes play a significant role in the response off the shale roof to mining-induced stresses. This paper presents a robust method for constructing three-dimensional shale roof models using limited borehole cores and leveraging image processing techniques. The approach begins with image extraction from shale cores. Then, we extract the portions that feature the core and employ image-stitching techniques to merge them seamlessly. Once the images are stitched, they are duplicated horizontally and merged to create a cross-sectional plane image representing a shale roof. This roof cross-sectional plane image serves as an input to our proprietary Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithm, which is adept at extracting ordinary bedding planes (interfaces that represent color transitions between a single shale unit). The extraction process involves transforming discrete core points (ordinary bedding plane pixels) into continuous lines representing ordinary bedding planes. Finally, extending this method into the third dimension, the model is further extrapolated to form a comprehensive three-dimensional shale roof. Through this process, the geometry information of ordinary bedding planes can be extracted for each type of shale in cores, including sandy shale, gray shale, dark shale, etc. This work bridges the gap between limited core data and comprehensive 3D geological modeling, offering valuable insights into identifying and quantifying the variations in different shale roof geologies.

INTRODUCTION MANY different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. DESCRIPTION OF BITS TESTED The 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener with 14° taper on the wings and a 90° angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 lb. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 5° taper on the wings. This was made by using the Carr bit die. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped hits made on, the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5° taper and an angle of 100° between cutting edges.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element (REE)-bearing phosphates and fluoro-carbonates was examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of REEs from various sources in the aqueous media.

Hematite represents the vast majority of iron ore exported from Australia as the development and processing cost of magnetite is generally seen as a barrier to the development of vast magnetite resources. However, a number of magnetite projects have attracted a significant amount of interest and investment from large Chinese steelmakers.This paper compares the relative merits of the development of Australian magnetite and hematite ore from the point of view of the steelmaker, taking into account the factors that influence the capital costs of the development of the ore types and the relative costs of operating the process plants to treat these ores. By modelling the relative operating cost for the production of hot rolled coil in China for the two ore categories, the paper demonstrates the economic drivers behind the Chinese steelmakers’ large investments in the magnetite resources of Western Australia. It does this by estimating the potential value of magnetite concentrate to the steelmaker in the event that the maximum potential is realised by operating the blast furnace with a 100 per cent pellet burden.Under the conditions described, it was found that direct reduction (DR)-grade magnetite concentrate could command a price premium over 62 per cent Fe fines of up to 46 per cent (December 2014 on a cost and freight (CFR) basis). The corresponding premium for blast furnace (BF)-grade magnetite concentrate is 17 per cent, which demonstrates the dependency on grade.The capital expenses for a 14 Mt/a concentrate plant is estimated at US$3.1 B for BF-grade magnetite and US$3.35 B for DR-grade, with operating expenses at US$45 and US$50 respectively. The corresponding free on board price for a break-even net present value is calculated at US$82/t for BF-grade magnetite and US$90/t for DR-grade. The minimum long-term iron ore price (62 per cent Fe) that would be required to underpin such a project is estimated at US$78/t CFR for BF-grade magnetite and US$68/t CFR for DR-grade concentrate.Apart from the financial benefits, it is demonstrated that the use of magnetite concentrate in ironmaking has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 400 kg per tonne of hot rolled coil.CITATION:Mouton, A J J and Edwards, K, 2015. Using a combined fire assay-atomic absorption method, gold determinations with a minimum detection limit of 5 ppb were made on 345 samples of Early Precambrian felsic plutonic rocks collected 2 2 from intrusions ranging in size from 4 km to 88 km and in composition from syenite to granodiorite. Gold levels in unmineralized stocks are consistently below the 5 ppb detection limit of the analytical method used. In contrast, analyses of samples from stocks containing gold mines within their borders and in nearby metavolcanic-metasedimentary host rocks show a strongly skewed trace element gold population with a substantial percentage of gold values exceeding 5 ppb and ranging as high as 320 ppb. The data indicate that (1) ore-stage hydrothermal metasomatism has produced widespread Au enrichment in Precambrian intrusions that host epigenetic vein-type gold deposits, and (2) geochemical Au analysis of samples collected from 30 to 50 randomly distributed sites can be used to estimate the gold exploration potential of stock-sized bodies and to outline internal patterns of Au variation which may be useful in directing exploration to particular contacts or portions of a stock. The results do not conclusively indicate unusually high Au content in primary unaltered igneous rocks.

Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) is the largest gold mining company in Western Africa. Their jewel operation is a highly inte­grated set of mines and plants situated in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. This operation is responsible for mining 5.5 mil­lion tonnes of ore at 4.6 git annually from a series of open pits and underground mines. The sulphide ore is highly refractory with untreated gold recoveries in the range of 30-40%. The milling facilities are quite varied and include an oxide treatment plant (OTP), a heap leach, a sulphide roaster circuit (PTP), a tailings treahnent plant (TIP) and the most recent, a sulphide treatment plant (STP). The sulphide treatment plant, the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation circuit, was commissioned in early 1994. This plant treats approximately 800 tonnes of refractory gold con­centrate per day with overall recoveries of75-85o/o(ll, Biooxidation was selected for its ease of operation and less exotic maintenance requirements as well as its ability to achieve comparable gold recoveries. Unfortunately, despite stirred tank biooxidation being one of the lower cost methods of treating refractory ores, it is still too costly for low grade refractory materials. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed a proprietary technology that allows the economic treatment of lower grade refractory gold ores through heap biooxidation. AGC has a significant resource of low grade refractory sulphide ore. This ore is too low grade to warrant BIOX™ sulphide treatment and its oxide plant recov­ery is low at 35-45%. GeoBiotics and AGC have completed pre­liminary testing and economic analysis of heap biooxidation for this material. Additionally, the feasibility of producing a gravity concentrate from the tailings of the sulphide treatment plant has been explored. This concentrate would be coated onto the low grade sulphide and biooxidized concurrently. Gold recoveries for the biooxidized low grade sulphide have increased to 75% and the gravity recovery from the STP tailings has achieved 80% uti­lizing a Falcon concentrator. The preliminary economics of the proposed full scale plant are very favourable with a pre-tax IRR of 233% and a payback period of 6 months. This paper details the biooxidation testing, flow sheet devel­opment and preliminary economics of employing heap biooxi­dation for low grade refractory ore treatment at Ashanti Goldfields' Obuasi operation.

Eleven steelmaking heats are described in this Bureau of Mines report in which acid practice was used to produce carbon steel from pre reduced iron ore pellets. Furnace slags obtained with no flux addition to the charge became quite viscous as they cooled, which precluded pressure casting from a ladle. Lime was added to the furnace charge at two levels to eight of the heats to modify slag characteristics in the furnace, and to the ladle in two heats to further modify the ladle slag cover. Selected ingots from nine heats were successfully rolled on a commercial mill to produce No. 10 reinforcing bar.

"The preservation of historic buildings is not only essential to the understanding of our national heritage, but it is also environmentally responsible to adapt existing buildings to compatible new uses. With this perspective, the American Enterprise Institute began exploring options to expand the newly acquired Andrew Mellon Building, located at 1785 Massachusetts Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., without causing any harm to the Beaux Arts style limestone façade and its plaster interiors. The building is a National Historical Landmark, but its 72,000 sq ft (6,690 sq m) of usable floor space did not meet the needs of its new owner. The building perimeter is very near the property line, so horizontal expansion was not possible. Adding height to the building was not an option, as this would have altered the historic nature of the building exterior. The only feasible option that could provide the desired floor space was to add a new floor underneath the existing structure. By adding a level beneath the existing building, an additional 28,000 sq ft (2,601 sq m) of floor space could be produced.Berkel & Company Contractors was chosen as the deep foundation/shoring contractor tasked with ensuring that the existing structure was stable and remained undamaged during the excavation and construction of the new lower level. To accomplish this, Berkel provided a shoring system that would act as both excavation support and permanent deep foundation elements for the final structure.Preservation of the existing limestone façade and plaster interiors was critical to the success of the project, as additional foundation settlements could damage these irreplaceable building components. Project specifications, therefore, included very stringent limits for foundation settlements. The maximum allowable total settlement for all existing building walls and columns was ¼ in (6 mm) for the duration of the project."

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Itmann No. 3 Mine, located near Mullens, West Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 250-volt-dc and 550- and 950-volt-ac machinery in two longwall panels was measured and is reported. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. It is recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape, and the noise data is later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to replace 5 miles of pipeline under San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM and will be the first TBM-driven tunnel under the Bay. The alignment passes under environmentally sensitive habitats, through interbedded layers of sands and clays, and through a buried bedrock ridge. This paper discusses the geotechnical characterization and anticipated tunneling conditions and presents the analysis of various construction methods that resulted in the selection of an EPB TBM. Considerations related to tunneling with an EPB TBM are described in detail, including ground conditioners, TBM cutterhead wear, muck control, and squeezing ground.

Recent legislation in the environmental field gives the mining industry an opportunity to take timely action to address its image. Shifting the focus away from mining (the activity) to minerals (the resource) will enable the mining industry to stand on equal footing with other industries and will help minimise the vulnerability to political and interest groupsÆ interference.

This article proposes a physical model for an idealized binary mineral system and for the process of liberation by size reduction. Based on this model, equations are derived relating the amount of each component liberated as a function of the ratio of the volumetric abundance of the two mineral components and the ratio of the mineral grain size to particle size. A definite relationship is shown to exist between the mineral concentration within a locked particle and the frequency of occurrence of such a particle. These relationships are used to obtain theoretical expressions for the concentration-recovery diagram. Physical mineral beneficiation processes are based on breaking a mineral aggregate to liberate the dissimilar mineral grains and then making use of their physical properties to separate the mixture into its components. The effectiveness of the process is therefore dependent on how well the minerals are liberated and how efficiently they are separated. Although a substantial amount of work is being done to improve our understanding of mineral separation processes, the study of mineral liberation itself has been almost completely neglected. The purpose of this theoretical study is to shed some light on the liberation phenomenon by: 1) proposing a physical model for an ideal binary mineral system, 2) treating mathematically the fracture of this system into liberated and locked particles, and 3) deriving an expression for the liberation characteristics of this system. The results of this study are useful in understanding the effect and importance of various parameters in liberation, and provide a basis for comparison with real mineral systems. 'RANDOM' MODEL It is recognized that liberation can be caused by detachment which results from fractures occurring at the mineral grain boundaries, or by size reduction which restricts the occurrence of dissimilar mineral locking to a portion of the resulting particles. The detachment effect is dependent on the relative strengths of the mineral grains and the bonds between them, and must be treated empirically for each mineral system. The size reduction effect, however, can be treated analytically if certain assumptions are made concerning the shape and geometrical arrangement of the mineral grains.

Swan1 mentions the process of solidifying naphthalene in strata. R. Van A. Mills2 recommends the use of materials such as sodium silicate and sodium carbonate, which react with oil-field water to form solid plugging agents. When a well is drilled in a new field the oil sands are found essentially devoid of water (Fig. 1). Unless a completely impermeable break exists over wide areas in the field, no water is found above the lower limit of the oil zone and no oil is found below the upper limit of the water zone. After considerable oil has been taken from the well, however, it is almost universal experience that water intrusion occurs. This intrusion may be of two kinds. The water may follow a path parallel to the bedding planes of the producing formation through loose streaks in the pay sand, as shown in Fig. 2, or the water level of the field may rise and enter the well by coning (Fig. 3). Water entering from the side is called "edge water," and that coming in from the bottom is called "bottom water.'' "Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations to assess the uncertainty of mineable reserves at the project’s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the correct (or accurate) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its effect on the final objective.The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc uncertainty model provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered, the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme.The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open pit and underground mine in northern Chile, and demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more traditional resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit."
