Regardless of worldwide location, company know-how, or financial backing, unforeseen delays occur. A comprehensive CRA study for the World Bank shows that delays are the rule, not the exception, in most mining and smelting projects. When delays are not factored into analysis and planning, financial projections are, literally, not to be believed. Returns on investment will seldom achieve their targeted level because of startup delays. 1. Scope of project In South Australia, the Western Mining Corporation operates the underground copper and uranium mine Olympic Dam. The deposits concerned are enormous (approx. 570 million tons) and have been mined since 1988. At the end of 1996, Western Mining decided to increase the capacity of Olympic Dam from 85,000 t.p.a. to 200,000 t.p.a. Planning At this point, SIEMAG-GHH Mining Division was asked to carry out a study including the planning of the entire shaft hoisting operations and calculation of the investment and operating costs involved. With the assistance of Australian partners, the study was completed within a single month. The principal points of the study were as follows: ? Planning of the hoisting machinery for 1,375 tons per hour from the surge bin below ground to the discharge bunker above ground. ? Optimisation of the hoisting operation with regard to maximum availability and safety. ? Optimisation of the time schedule to minimise the financing costs of the investment. ? Statement of the investment and operating costs. ? Comparison of the technical data, design and availability of the planned machinery with reference plants. Construction of the plant Following acceptance of the study, the decision was taken within a few weeks to implement it. SIEMAG Transplan GmbH received the order to execute the entire shaft hoisting machinery on the basis of the study submitted. The decisive factors in placing the order were: ? Convincing study, adherence to schedule ? Reference to comparable plants elsewhere ? Reference with regard to availability.

"A review of the dynamic rod mill-ball mill grinding circuit simulator developed at the University of Alberta, highlighting the modular structure and open-ended design, demonstrates the ease with which classical feedback control strategies can be designed and implemented. Various open loop simulations are presented to demonstrate the highly interactive nature of the grinding circuit and to indicate where potential control problems may be encountered. Closed loop simulations are examined, beginning with the basic SISO classical feedback control of circuit product size. Further improvement in the grinding circuit performance in the presence of various disturbances is realized through the application of a classical MIMO feedback controller. As an example of advanced (multivariable) control, static decoupling is implemented and shown to provide additional improvement in overall circuit performance.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognized in the processing industries that a dynamic process simulator is an indispensable tool in the design and evaluation of automatic control schemes. In mineral processing the lack of these simulators is felt to have been a major hindrance to the widespread implementation of effective process control systems. In particular dynamic simulation is a necessary precursor to any study of modern (as opposed to classical) process control methods. This paper discusses the development of a dynamic simulator that can be used to study various feedback control strategies. The simulation software provides a powerful educational tool for those individuals interested in grinding circuit control."

The object of this chapter is to present data concerning the effect of the introduction of relatively slight amounts of carbon and nitrogen into supersaturated solution in iron. The study is confined to the alpha temperature range of both the Fe-C and Fe-N systems. The age-hardening characteristics of these two systems are considered. These data are compared to those of other age-hardening alloy systems and a "classification" is essayed. A.—Relation of Lattice Parameter and Electrical Conductivity to Changes in Physical Properties Due to Aging of Fe-C Alloys Since Whiteleyl in 1927 showed that some of the iron carbide that is normally present in slowly cooled low carbon-iron alloys disappears on rapid cooling from just below the A, point, interest has been manifested in the possibilities of age-hardening in these alloys. Masing and Koch,~ and at the same time and independently, W. Koster,~ proved these alloys to be age-hardenable. A. A. Bates4 a little later also published an interesting paper on changes in physical properties due to the aging of low-carbon steels. Many other papers have appeared showing changes in physical properties in specific instances due to this same phenomenon.

"The sinter quantity and quality of limonite in the magnetite and hematite sintering models were studied and compared. For the sintering of magnetite, the results showed that the increase of limonite improved the permeability of sinter mixture, increased the sinter quantity and quality. The sinter strength and productivity were decreased when the proportion of limonite exceeded 50%. The appropriate proportion of limonite was 40%-50%. For the sintering of hematite, the sinter quantity and quality were first maintained at the same level thereafter declined, more obviously when the proportion of limonite exceeded 40%. The amount of calcium ferrite increased whose shape changed from acicular to leaflike and block gradually with the proportion of limonite increased from 0% to 80%.IntroductionWith the fierce competition of domestic and overseas iron markets in the twenty-first century, cheap ores such as limonite are used to be sintering raw materials to cut the costs of sinter and pig iron for steel making, and boosts the competitiveness of steel companies [1, 2]. In addition, as the reserve volume of hematite of high grade is reducing year by year, the usage amount of limonite in sintering are expanding in major domestic and international sintering plant [3, 4]. Sintering can be divided into two types, majoring in concentrates and fine ores, according to the different types of raw materials. The sintering characteristics of limonite in the two types above have been studied and compared in this paper, which makes a significant sense for the research of limonite sintering properties and guidance of ore proportioning in sintering plants."

The transfer of material from the solid to the liquid states can be accomplished in several ways. It occurs by the application of heat in the more familiar metallurgical operations of melting but it can also be accomplished by solution in a liquid, as can occur in systems using liquid metals for heat-transfer media. The kinetics of this reaction were studied to learn more of the separate steps in the process. In the case of a pure material at its melting temperature, Te,A,, thermal energy must be supplied to the solid in an amount equal to the latent heat of fusion in order for the solid-to-liquid transfer to occur. The rate at which heat is supplied, and hence the rate of melting, is a function of the temperature gradients in the system. J. M. HARTMAN, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Fackenthal can remember some queer things that occurred at Durham, Pa., Aug. 3, 1876, while he was superintendent. The furnace was working stiff, i.e., blast-pressure 10 to 11 pounds, which was high pressure for those days. With this pressure there was some circulation through the stock. At 9 p.m., flushed cinder. After flushing, air was thrown off' for a moment to " bot up "; the keeper turned the lever and threw on air just as the scaffold dropped, which eased up the pressure to 4¼ pounds. The air-receiver is twice as large at Durham as at other places. The air from this receiver, added to the two seven-foot blowers, gave an extra large volume, which, rushing into the furnace, fired the finely-divided carbon, causing an explosion that threw part of the stock in the furnace out into the open air, threw up the bell-and-hopper with the tunnel-head plates, and gave off' a large volume of carbondust. The bell-and-hopper going up first, the stock followed, and, striking the bell-and-hopper, was deflected in a shower over the cast-house roof, breaking the slates. Sitting at the corner of the engine-house at the time, the stock pelted me, when I ran around the corner to get rid of it. Remembering there were two men at the furnace-top, I shut down the engines, and, running to the top, found them sitting in the hoist-house enjoying the fire-works. The explanation of this explosion is simple. There is in the blast-furnace a bed of fuel extending up, say, 16 to 18 feet above the tuyeres; in this bed of fuel some stray pieces of limestone are found, and a few pieces of unreduced ore; but, generally speaking, it is all fuel. On this bed of fuel is the zone of fusion. In this zone the descending stock is liquefied, except the fuel; the iron, melting, drops out of the ore, and the gangue unites with lime, forming cinder. AMONG the highly skilled craftsmen of the Renaissance were those who worked with ores and metals. The author of this book, Vannoccio Biringuccio, was a master craftsman in the practices of smelting and of metalworking. Contrary to the customs of a trade, Biringuccio was moved to impart his knowledge to all and thus he has given us the earliest hand- book on metallurgy-in fact, the first printed book dealing with the applied metal arts and the processes of ore reduction. We should remind ourselves that metallurgy is an ancient art and then it fair1y may be said that Biringuccio sought to describe the techniques that had been in course of development since the Bronze Age of western civilization. Whether Biringuccio was a man of learning or a scholar according to the standards of his time we do not know, but today we recognize him as a man of science who gave his wisdom to succeeding generations. It was not until the coming of the Power Age at the end of the eighteenth century that progress was resumed in the science of which he wrote more than two hundred years before. Little is known of Biringuccio's training in his native Siena. It can be surmised that there, as in Florence, where his contemporary Benvenuto Cellini lived, he received his training in the craftsman shops where the industrial arts were taught and flourished alongside the fine arts. Perhaps he and Cellini were acquainted, although there is no mention of Biringuccio in Cellini's autobiography-an omission that Cellini's vast egotism makes understandable. He was the great artist, and Biringuccio was a practical, studious, unromantic figure with no favors to dispense. In the April 1940 issue of Mining and Metallurgy Dr. Smith describes Biringuccio's book under the title of "A Neglected Italian Metallurgical Classic." The article, revised and extended, forms the basis of the introduction to the present volume, and I urge all who take up Pirotechnia to read what Dr. Smith has written in the Introduction. Biringuccio's work is a classic and in its translation Dr. Smith and Dr. Gnudi have brought to bear the high degree of scholarship that it deserves. Dr. Gnudi made the translation at Dr. Smith's request and it was then refined "in the fire" of his scientific knowledge of the subject. The result is a book which the Institute is proud to place before its members and which the Memorial Fund Committee considers it a privilege to publish.

A large scale blast damage project was carried out over the past two years at INCO Ltd Manitoba Division co-funded by the Canada/Manitoba Mineral Development Agreement. The experiment was conducted at the T-3 Mine in two mining stopes with an experimental drift developed in the hanging-wall for the installation of monitoring instrumentation. The objective was to observe and subsequently to reduce ore dilution by monitoring the performance of blasts, the hanging wall movement, as well as the cavity of the open stopes.

As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. "In view of the present situation that the traditional environment friendly depressants for galena aren’t very effective in the separation of mixed concentrate including copper sulfide and lead sulfide, this research describes a new environment friendly depressant PD-1 and investigates its effects and mechanism in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena. This study is carried out through flotation tests, analysis of infrared spectra and absorption measurements. It is shown that when O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z200) is used as collector, chalcopyrite and galena can be separated in the presence of PD-1 under appropriate conditions. Therefore, it can be concluded that PD-1 has an excellent depression ability and great selectivity for galena. Meanwhile, analysis of infrared spectra demonstrates that PD-1 can strongly absorb on the galena surface by chemical interaction with Pb2+, while it hardly absorbs on the chalcopyrite surface. In addition, the results of absorption measurements reveal that competitive adsorption occurs on the galena surface between PD-1 and Z200, PD-1 can block the absorption of Z200 on the galena surface. However, PD-1 has a little effect on the absorption of Z200 on the chalcopyrite surface under above conditions. What’s more, the hydrophilic groups of PD-1 molecules can make galena effectively depressed. The results of mechanism analysis are in accordance with those of flotation tests.INTRODUCTION In the processing of copper-lead sulfide ores, the process, copper increase and lead reduction (Zhang et al., 2017) after reagents removal of rough concentrate produced by mixed flotation of chalcopyrite and galena, is usually adopted. However, as a result of tight symbiosis and the similar flotability of chalcopyrite and galena, the separation is difficult (Hu and Feng, 2006). There are 3 kinds of depressants for galena in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena concentrate,including dichromate, sulfite and combined depressants of organic or inorganic reagents (Wei, 2012). As dichromate would cause serious environmental pollution, it is gradually banned to be used in industry (Xu et al., 2017; Lin et al., 2017). what’s more, due to the need of acidic slurry, using sulfite is not conductive to the maintenance of equipment and stable production(Wang, 1999). As for the combined depressants, they also have disadvantages of complex pharmaceutical system and no ideal separation effect (Wei and Sun, 2008). Therefore, the development of new safe and effective depressants for galena is a research focus for researchers in the minerals processing (Chen, 2000). In this paper, a new type of organic depressant PD-1 is applied to the copper-lead separation process of ""copper increase and lead reduction"" using Z200 as the collector. In addition, the performances and mechanism of its depression to galena are studied emphatically."

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). After a number of years of engineering and operating assignments and through many types of evaluations, the need for a simple analytical method of evaluating mine haulage alternatives became obvious. Haulage, like 50 many other facets of mining, is generally a sequence of interconnected events that change, often drastically from mine to mine. Often the operator or the mine engineer has neither the time, manpower, facilities, or information needed to prepare a detailed evaluation. For many studies or for routine variance analysis, that detail may not be necessary. The intent of this article is to present an approach for analyzing mobile mine haulage that is simple and straight-forward. These methods are not designed to replace more formal and detailed procedures that have been developed previously and are available in our technical libraries. They are offered as a tool to be applied to preliminary designs, feasibility studies, and variance analyses where more complete detail is not warranted. These methods will eliminate combinations that are not economical or appropriate before more intensive and complete evaluations are undertaken. These methods may also be used to evaluate ongoing operations and to plan changes in those operations. This presentation describes a series of steps that have evolved for the handling of haulage evaluations. It concentrates on the factors having major impact on the results. Because the approach is a sequence of distinct steps, a case study was chosen as the best method of presentation. This case is a composite of several actual situations that have been encountered within the last few years.

The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

Advanced Jig Separation of Shredded Plastics The authors have reported that the RETAC jig is very useful in separating relatively low density particles such as plastics, and demonstrated that highly efficient jig separation of plastic components in discarded office machines is possible in pilot-scale tests. To further improve the separation efficiency, a hybrid jig (RETAC jig with air bubbler under the particle bed) which can separate plastics having similar specific gravities using differences in wettability produced by a pretreatment, and a reverse jig (modified RETAC jig for plastics lighter than water) were developed. This paper reviews the separation of shredded plastics using advanced jig separation technology (RETAC, hybrid and reverse jigs). Wettability control of the plastics for the advanced jig separation is also reported.

Probability sizing, a fairly recent development in the field of particle separation, is now under investigation to determine its value to the mining industry. The method employed is probability sizing through a vibrating network of decreasing screen openings. While probability sizing is not new, the possibility of using it for coarse, highly abrasive ores at high tonnage rates has only recently appeared to merit practical consideration. The advantages of probability sizing vs. conventional screening methods are: (1) reduced space requirements for a high capacity unit, (2) fewer moving parts, (3) more versatile product sizing selection, (4) reduced maintenance requirements, and (5) lower power consumption. Screening is a necessary part of virtually every crushing circuit. At some stage in the process, particle separation becomes a controlling factor in the operation. The basic type of screen in use today is the vibrating unit, which usually employs a mechanical vibrator of one type or another to obtain sizing and material transportation across the screen surface. The vibrating screen has its limitations and inherent problems. Operators must live with: (1) high maintenance — worn rods, screen cloth, spacers, cross members, chutes, etc., (2) low capacity in relation to floor space requirements, (3) extreme noise levels, (4) high power consumption, and (5) structural problems in the screens and supporting steelwork. All plant operators have become tolerant of these drawbacks through the years, and little innovation has been developed in screening. The vibrating screens in use today incorporate improved metals, more efficient power sources, better lubricants, and increased manufacturing skill, but the basic machine itself remains unchanged. Screening is a relatively small part of most plants' operating expenditures and gets relatively little attention from research and development. The HiProb sizer is a new approach to the problem of particle separation on a high tonnage basis. Developed by Dr. Fredrik Mogensen (president of Fred-rik Mogensen, A. B. of Djursholn, Sweden), this unit has found its primary acceptance in the sizing of wet or dry materials in the fine ranges. Climax has been working cooperatively with Mine and Smelter Supply Company, the United States licensee, on the adaptation of the sizer to obtain consistent recovery at a high tonnage rate on a — 3/8-in. separation. This was a new application for the sizer and opened up a whole new field of problems. Dr. Mogensen's machine utilizes the control of normal probability of falling particles and is designed to eliminate some of the undesirable features of vibrating screens mentioned earlier. The machine is light, compact, consumes less power than conventional screens and has a low noise level. PRINCIPLES Probability sizing is a process designed to allow solid particles to segregate with a high ratio of the materials reporting into their respective size fractions with a minimum amount of misplaced particles. Sizing is defined in this paper as segregation of dry solid particles into fractions of comparable sizes. Probability is usually estimated as the ratio of the number of ways an event might occur vs. the total number of allowable ways. The probability process described depends upon the fact that particles falling through a network will segregate across the sizing surface even though all openings are larger than the particles. The degree of segregation is dependent upon the particle size and the trajectory applied by the sizing network to each falling particle. Specifically, the process utilizes a maze made up of screen cloth to control the path of a particle in free fall as illustrated in Fig. 1. The usefulness of this probability sizing process is dependent upon the degree of efficiency of an effective maze. Primarily, a maze must be extremely flexible to meet the multi-faceted nature of solid particles and, at the same time, the degree of control must be reproducible so that a desired separation is predictable. Dr. Fredrik Mogensen has formulated a maze that is not only flexible and easily controlled, but, mote importantly, easily adaptable to a working machine.

In the 1980s and?90s the gold mining industry in South Africa came under pressure from the continued poor dollar gold price and escalating Rand based costs, furthermore the external impacts on the industry were changing. Thus, the Chamber of Mines (COM) shifted its focus away from many historical areas of support towards the new industry challenges in safety and health, labour markets, environmental responsibility, mineral rights legislation and social responsibility. During 1997 the lack of funds and the changes facing the tertiary institutions were often subjects of discussion at the various sub-committee meetings. The Metallurgical Sub-committee of the Chamber Education Fund or the Sub-committee of Consulting Metallurgists as it was known identified the need for the funding structure to change with the times. Up to this time the Chamber of Mines operated an Education Fund that supported mining industry academic departments at various South African tertiary institutions; these funds were derived exclusively from the country?s gold and coal mines the basis of Chamber membership. Funds of less than R5 million per annum were available for distribution by the three disciplinary sub-committees of mining, metallurgy and geology.
