Outokumpu has developed a new chloride leaching process called HydroCopper®. In this process copper sulfide concentrates are leached at atmospheric pressure in concentrated sodium chloride solution using cupric ions as the oxidant. Copper is recovered from the purified leach solution by precipitating cuprous oxide, which is then reduced to pure copper and further melted and cast directly into copper products. The key reactants: sodium hydroxide, hydrogen and chlorine are generated from the spent sodium chloride using chlor-alkali technology. An important feature in the HydroCopperTM process is that the gold contained in copper concentrates is leached as chloride complexes and recovered from solution by activated carbon. Conditions for the leaching of gold-bearing pyrite can also be achieved in the chloride system by optimizing the redox conditions. This paper deals with the basic factors affecting gold leaching from copper sulfide concentrates. Opportunities for the recovery of refractory gold associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite will also be discussed.

In sampling a process stream, conventional sampling theory deals only with the variation of the analyte content and neglects the impact of the variation in the mass flow on the sampling variance, whether the sampling regime is time-based or mass-based. This is an obvious simplification of the real state of affairs and it is worthwhile to study this impact via simulation.With a facility to simulate large (long) random functions having some thousands of points in the function and the ability to impose covariance functions on the mass flow and analyte variations, such a study is possible. It is also possible to evaluate the impact of correlation between analyte content and mass flows.This paper describes a limited study of the variance increase due to mass flow fluctuations over the usual sampling variance due to analyte variation during the sampling period. The bias in the sampling result is determined for specific modes of correlation. Simulation methods are used as they are the only means by which a sampling result can be compared to the true assay for the lot; in the physical circumstances of mineral process analysis, it is never possible to determine the true process stream assay.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. A adesão de revestimentos multifuncionais em substratos moles é de extrema importância para o comportamento tribológico desta importante classe de tratamentos superficiais. Mais especificamente, testes de indentação e de riscamento são bastante utilizados na medição desta propriedade. No presente estudo, a adesão de filmes de DLC do tipo a-C:H depositados em aço baixo carbono nitretado foi investigada através de testes de indentação e riscamento. Os revestimentos foram produzidos através de PECVD em substratos de aço 1020 com dois acabamentos superficiais: lixado (Sq = 0,184 µm) e polido (Sq = 0,002 µm). Foram realizados testes de indentação Rockwell C e a adesão foi quantificada através da medição da área desplacada em imagens obtidas através de microscopia ótica. Esta análise produziu resultados semi-quantitativos, eliminando a análise qualitativa subjetiva sugerida pela norma VDI3198. Ainda, testes de riscamento foram realizados nas mesmas amostras com o mesmo indentador para que uma comparação entre ambas as técnicas pudesse ser estabelecida. Por fim, o método apresentado mostrou resultados coerentes, onde amostras com menor carga crítica apresentaram uma maior área desplacada. Amostras lixadas apresentaram um desempenho inferior em relação a adesividade.

The classical application of Nb microalloying in the development of thermomechanical processes for flat products has been related to its suitability to enhance strain-induced precipitation and get a pancaked austenite prior to transformation. As new steel grades or new lay-outs are being developed, more complex metallurgical conditions need to be evaluated. In this context, Nb microalloying, alone or combined with other microadditions, needs to intervene in a more controlled way in additional steps of the thermomechanical process, besides its conventional strain-induced precipitation role. For example, the hardenability enhancement associated with Nb to properly achieve lower temperature transformation products, demands a proper balance of the Nb amount precipitated during rolling and the one remaining in solid solution. Similar effects are also sought when the final available Nb is used to increase strength through precipitation hardening. This manuscript evaluates how changes in the rolling strategies affect the interaction between Nb(C,N) precipitation and austenite recrystallization at different steps of the rolling process. As the possible interactions between parameters intervening simultaneously are quite complex, the application of microstructural models helps to properly define the best austenite conditioning combined with the convenient amount of Nb in solution, as a function of the final property requirements. Along the manuscript, several strategies will be discussed for the case of hot rolling of flat products comparing both normal and coarse initial austenite grain sizes.

Selective flotation to separate copper minerals from, for example, Mo- and/or As-bearing minerals is a continuing problem because the selectivity of current systems is imperfect. Selective Cu-As flotation is currently difficult, and the most common Cu-Mo selective flotation method uses NaHS; this must be done in an enclosed system because, under acidic conditions, this method produces hydrogen sulfide. In this paper, some novel alternative flotation processes that use redox reactions are discussed; these methods have a much lower environmental impact. Oxidation and reduction reactions can be used to make copper minerals more hydrophilic and Mo-bearing minerals more hydrophobic. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that the copper minerals became hydrophilic because hydrophilic iron precipitated and several hydroxides covered the copper minerals’ surfaces, whereas the molybdenum minerals remained hydrophobic because their sulfide surfaces were not covered. Flotation experiments on these minerals after redox treatments indicated that excellent separation of Cu-minerals from Mo-minerals can be achieved. Possible mechanisms for this separation were investigated using detailed surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations. The additives used to initiate the redox reactions are easy to handle and make these new flotation procedures better than current processes because the new methods do not emit effluent gas and because they are commercially viable. The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

The equipment of a laboratory in which students are to be trained for practical work in metallurgical chemistry presents many difficulties not encountered in the fitting up of a commercial or works laboratory. At an industrial plant the chemical work required usually demands the frequent repetition of a comparatively limited number of methods. In a steel-works laboratory, for instance, by far the larger part of the work consists in making determinations of the usual impurities found in iron and steel; at a smelter the great bulk of the work is confined to the analysis of ores, slags, mattes, and fuels, which involve the frequent application of perhaps not more than a dozen different methods. In a laboratory of this character, therefore, those operations most frequently applied may each have a certain section set apart and fitted permanently with such apparatus as best facilitates the carrying out of this one operation. The work of a commercial or custom laboratory is perhaps more varied than that of a works laboratory, but the couditions are similar in these respects, that there is usually no great need for economy of space, and that a few skilled workmen are employed to carry the determinations through from beginning to end without interruption. On the other hand, the laboratory of a technical school should be planned on such a scale that a comparatively large number of students may work at the same time, and each desk should be equipped for general metallurgical analysis. In most institutions for technical education the student's program is so arranged that his day is divided among several subjects in the course of study; only a few consecutive hours being devoted to one subject, or spent in one laboratory. Pin Piles are small diameter high capacity drilled and grouted piles also called minipiles or micropiles. They are ideal for building foundations on sites with poor ground conditions, sensitive surroundings, restricted vertical clearance, or difficult access. They are also well suited to foundation underpinning, arresting ground movements, and increasing the capacity of existing foundations. The major factors for selection of Pin Piles are reviewed; drilling, grouting, and design fundamentals are summarized; and a major case history is presented for the underpinning of the 43 story elevator core at the recently opened Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Amphoteric surfactants are heteropolar organic compounds which possess at least two functional (ionic) oppositely charged groups per molecule. The ones studied are manufactured by General Mills and possess one or more long hydrocarbon chains plus a carboxyl group (s) and an amino or imino group. Hallimond tube and M. C. Fuerstenau micro flotation cell flotation tests were performed on quartz and hematite as a function of pH using amphoteric, cationic, and anionic surfactants as collectors. For the most part, flotation could be correlated with an interaction of charged groups on the collectors with oppositely charged sites on the minerals plus association of hydrocarbon chains. The comparison of flotation in a Hallimond tube and an M.C. Fuerstenau cell shows that one should use care in using the latter if one excludes an additional frother from the system. Also, it is interesting to note that sometimes greater collector concentrations are required in the Fuerstenau cell for comparable flotation recoveries.

Sandstone paleo-channels encountered during coal mining operation can significantly slow down the advance in mining, and often completely shut-down coal mine production, with consequent extensive economic losses to the mine operator. Definition of the encountered channel usually involves intensive drilling; vertically from the surface and/or horizontally from underground vantage points. Coal operators with limited resources often resort to exploration by extending mine faces toward the channel. Both drilling and underground mining exploration are prohibitively expensive and usually provide only partial information about the location, size and shape of the sandstone channel. A low cost alternative which can also provide a more comprehensive picture of the channel is the application of Underground High Resolution Seismic Methods (UHRSM) developed and successfully tested by GECOH Exploration. UHRSM applies surface seismic reflection technology rotated as needed (usually 90 degrees) to accommodate the faces of the exposed channel, coal rib, or coal in front of the inclusion (sandstone channel, etc.). This entails placing high frequency seismic sources and geophones horizontally across these exposed faces. Refraction and reflection events from the front and back of the channel are isolated, analyzed and inverted, to calculate the channel's location and geometry. This paper presents a summary of the geophysical exploration technique and two case history examples where it was applied. In the first case, the accuracy of the technique was verified through subsequent mining. Mining is yet to commence in the second case. Both cases were applied to room-and-pillar nines where the irregular rib lines significantly extended the data processing effort. This suggests that UHRSM will find the easiest application when used along straight rib lines, but that is not a requisite to the application. The UHRSM should find ready application in longwall mining to delineate sandstone channels and other non-coal inclusions in the middle of the panels or ahead of the gate road faces.

This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.'s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) saves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Low ambient temperatures may cause these recycled oils to become too viscous for proper absorption by ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and result in poor blast performance, safety hazards, and environmental problems. To help quantify and resolve these issues, viscosity, mixing, and performance tests were conducted at various temperatures. Diesel fuels No. 1 and No. 2 were studied separately and in blends with 25,50, and 75% RO. Good quality ANFO mixes (94-6) were produced with dry absorbent prills and blended fuel (No. 1 diesel plus RO) at temperatures as low as -40° F (-40°C) with 75% No. 1125% RO, and at -20°F (-29°C) with 50/50. Diesel fuel No. 2 also made good mixes as low as -30" F (-34" C) with 75% No. 2/25% RO, and at 0° F(-18° C)with 50/50. Reference detonation velocity tests were conducted in 1.4" (3.6 cm) diameter steel pipe at 70°F (21°C) on No. 1 diesel ANFO (94-6), giving an average value of 9722 ft/s (2964 m/s). Comparison tests showed good ANFO performance at low temperatures. Blended fuel ANFO (75% No. 1/25% RO) mixed, loaded, and tested at -40°F (-40°C), produced an average velocity of 9247 Ws (281 8 m/s). A 50/50 blend gave a velocity of 8083 Ws (2464 ds) at -20°F (-29°C). Based on these results, a practical field method has been developed to help evaluate whether a specific oil blend will mix properly with AN at a low ambient temperature. This method will help to promote the safe and reliable use of RO ANFO at low temperatures, with adequate performance.

"Titanium dioxide is broadly considered as the most potential useful photocatalytic material. In this work, titanium dioxide was synthetized by microwave solid-state method and characterized by thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result demonstrates that through microwave solid-state synthesis, we can obtain uniform size and anatase TiO2 photocatalyst, with the precursor being Ti(C2O4)2·2H2O. And its degradation kinetic parameter of MO can reach to 0.21232.IntroductionSince Fujishima and Honda found the photovoltaic property of titanium dioxide TiO2 [l], it has been widely used in the field of pollutant degradation, virus killer and environment protection [2-5]. Compared to other semiconductors, TiO2 has the advantage of low toxicity/cost, chemical stability, excellent photocatalytic activity, and long lifetime of electron/hole pairs, thus it is considered to be a most potential useful photocatalyst material [ 6]. Solid-state synthesis of oxide nanoparticle is a new method developed in recent years, which not only overcomes the shortcomings of easily aggregation existing in traditional hydrometallurgical process, but also fully demonstrates the unique technologic advantages of without solvents, high yield, easy control, less environmental pollution in solid-state reaction [7-11]. Researches show that the new method of microwave synthesis shows a lot of advantages such as fast reaction rate, efficient, high purity of product, uniform morphology, energy-efficient, and nonpolluting [12-15].In this work, we associated microwave heating and solid-state synthesis to prepare TiO2 photocatalyst material. It has been recognised worldwide that the liquefaction risk of unconstrained tailings stacks or cyclone underflow embankments requires careful consideration. The stability of a tailings deposit where the perimeter embankments are made up of hydraulic fill is often governed by post-liquefaction stability.Cyclones are frequently used around the world to classify tailings into a coarse underflow for building a tailings impoundment wall and a finer fraction that is disposed of into the basin. The shear strength of the tailings that form the outer embankment of a tailings storage facility (TSF) and the location of the phreatic surface are the two most significant factors influencing the structural integrity of the facility. The coarse underflow is placed in such a way as to contain the overflow, which is finer, has low strength and is often poorly consolidated.A cyclone field trial was undertaken at a gold mine in Western Australia to assess the feasibility of using the cyclone deposition method to optimise and increase the capacity of an existing tailings cell. The aim of the cyclone trial was to collect information to demonstrate to the client and the regulators that cyclone deposition was a feasible option for raising TSF embankments. The cyclone trial provided an opportunity to assess the cyclone under field conditions and the quantity and quality of the underflow fraction produced on-site. A variety of methods were used to assess the flow liquefaction susceptibility of the tailings underflow sample produced during the cyclone field trial.The field trial, laboratory testing and analysis will be discussed in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J and Reid, D, 2015. Pillar design ought to be a matter of matching pillar strength against pillar loading conditions to come up with dimensions that will cause the pillar to behave as required - to stand forever, or for a limited time, or to fail in a controlled manner. But something has gone wrong in recent years, seriously wrong. Pillar design practices have departed from reality. The laboratory and computer have taken the place of the mind. If the mind is put to work and such pillar design practices are examined critically, it becomes obvious that they deal with conditions that do not exist in a real mine. Time, effort and money are wasted, and the end results are incorrect and misleading. These questionable pillar design practices have been passed on from generation to generation over the past 30 or 40 years. The hope here is that we can return to reality as soon as the questionable practices are generally recognized. We could then go back into the mines and define how pillars really work, and mining safety, efficiencies and costs should improve. Let us take a close look at current textbook design practices and compare them to real-life conditions. Common sense might then prevail. (At this time, we will consider only mine pillar design, but similar scrutiny should be applied to design criteria for width of openings, floor conditions and roof support systems.)

"Since the idea of processing rock to unlock the valuable minerals inside was put into practice, efforts to improve production began. Methods have been learned that allow for operation in environments and under circumstances where it would not have been possible until now. All existing operations have experienced at least some form of productivity improvement measures. The objective is simple: generate more product of better quality in less time and at lower unit cost. Since the year 2000, various modifications have been made at the Kemess Concentrator in efforts to improve productivity. The following is a discussion of these modifications and their contributions to the success of the operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Kemess South Mine, a major producer of gold and copper, is located in north-central British Columbia. Kemess was brought into production in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines with a modern mill controlled by a fully integrated Foxboro IA DCS system and employing 134 people. On February 11, 2000 Northgate Exploration Limited (now Northgate Minerals Corporation) acquired Kemess Mine from receivership. Since acquisition in 2000, Kemess has seen many accomplishments, including the reduction of costs by 40% site wide.The mill has a nameplate capacity of approximately 56,000 tonnes per day which is processed through a Metso (Svedala) 60” x 89” Primary Gyratory Crusher and then conveyed by a 60” conveyor to a stockpile with 48 hours of total storage capacity. The nominal minus 6” rock from the stockpile is fed to two parallel grinding circuits (A & B). Each section consists of a 10.4 m F x 4.7 m SAG mill with dual drive motors (4,480 kW apiece) discharging onto a 2.4 m x 7.3 m Metso (Svedala) single deck vibrating screen to remove the coarse material for recycle to the SAG mill by a Continental 45º high angle sandwich conveyor. Screen undersize is pumped along with ball mill discharge to a cyclopac consisting of twelve Krebs 66 cm F cyclones to classify flotation feed to a size of approximately 65% minus 200 mesh. Cyclone underflow feeds a Metso (Svedala) 6.8 m F x 11.0 m ball mill, also with dual drive motors (4,480 kW apiece). The primary grinding circuit has 35,840 kW available for grinding."

The Coal Research Bureau of the School of Mines at West Virginia University, using a modified design of a Russian flotation device, was able to obtain a clean coal product containing 7.64 percent ash with 94 percent yield and 97 percent coal recovery. This favorable performance was obtained with the semi-pilot scale flotation cell operating as a simulated three stage unit on slurry taken from the fine coal circuit of a coal preparation plant. This experimental device, consisting of a sheet metal cyclone-like unit mounted on a U-shaped uplift pipe, uses a combined flotation and cyclone action to beneficiate the minus 14 mesh partially cleaned feed product. In addition to providing comparable analytical results, the airlift-cyclone possesses other attractive features among them being a low capital expenditure, utilization of moderate plant floor space, efficient "operation on high density feed slurry, and absence of moving parts.
