Gouverneur Talc produces a dry mineral filler from the tremolite talc rocks located near Gouverneur, New York. The raw material for this rock powder is a silicate rock and dust is controlled by water sprays whenever it becomes a problem underground. In the milling operation, there are some nine baghouse-type dust collectors which are utilized for the control of dust created in the crushing and grinding process. These collectors have been installed over a period of years since 1947 and are assigned to specific areas where the particle sizing of the dust can be returned to the plant circuit or product involved at the point of collection. It has been found very advantageous to mount most of these collectors on the top of the mill building and packhouses where the return of the dust can be accomplished by a gravity feed. In the years of effort involved in efficient control of dust generated in the plant, many things have been learned in the construction of ducts for control valves. The company has found useful such things as grasshopper legs for interconnecting silos with similar products, the elimination of fiat dust ducts, cleaning cyclones for coarse dust or heavy loadings, refractory linings for cyclones and certain duct areas, and the avoidance of square intersections when diverting or combining ducts. Operating cost records indicate that collectors handling the finest dust have the least expense. Operating costs on high-temperature dusts generally run higher than other types of material collected. Experience further indicates that the multiple cyclone-type collectors can provide a low cost and efficient way of removing hot dusts from process air streams before the introduction of the material into a baghouse. High moisture conditions and cold northern climates have been found to combine and create conditions under which baghouses can not efficiently function as dust collectors. Gouverneur Talc feels that its several dust collection systems have been a considerable maintenance expense but well worth the cost when it came to safeguarding the employees' health and preventing air pollution.

Mine haul roads degrade rapidly due to extreme loads on suboptimal construction materials. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are suited to quantify large-area road-network conditions, such as surface roughness, defects and grade to optimize remediation of poor conditions and reduce overall costs. Mine haul roads present unique challenges, such as material type and edge characteristics, to automatic road detection that often fails, requiring manual road input. This research work proposes a new method using the road center determined by the principal curve of a haul truck’s path. Analysis grids were created from this center line. A dense point cloud from UAV photogrammetry was generated and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on each individual grid. The root-mean-square error in each grid indicates the surface roughness, and the change of slope between grids indicates the road grade inconsistencies. This method was applied to 26 road sections, and the results were validated by images taken from the truck operator’s vantage point. Critical defects were identified including excessive pothole formation, corrugation, depressions retaining water, and narrowing of travel lane. The results demonstrate this is a valid method of road identification and quantification of road defects at a mine site.

Continuous casting of slabs is conducted with two successive steel flows: first from ladle to tundish, then from tundish to mold. There are certain process abnormalities related to ladle, tundish and mold. For example, change of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is the one encountered during steel flow from tundish to mold. Tundish exchange is the abnormality taking place due to replacement of processed tundish with the new one at rest. Another example is the flow of steel from ladle to tundish without a ladle shroud. In this study, a statistical analysis was conducted related to the process abnormalities in slab casters of a steel plant. Slab surface defects observed in slab yard was incorporated in this analysis.

The number of underground work entities operating under reduced dust standards in U.S. coal mines has been increasing since the start of the decade of the 80s and is currently approaching 10,000. The concern for controlling the quartz levels in airborne respirable dust in coal mine has manifested itself in several improvements in equipment selection and operation, face ventilation practices, and dust control procedures. At the same time, fundamental studies have been initiated on determining the source-sink relationships of the airborne quartz dust. The P-7 method is the prescribed method for the determination of quartz in the respirable airborne dust samples from coal mines. Questions have been raised on the reliability of the P-7 infrared spectrometry method for quartz analysis in powders. No specific method has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples from the mine. In a recent study on the relationship between quartz in the airborne dust and that in the materials being mined, both infrared (IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used on a suite of samples from several coal mines. These samples encompassed airborne respirable dust samples, airborne total dust samples, the oversize fraction from the respirable samplers, ROM samples, channel samples, and chip samples from the face, roof, and floor materials. In this paper, the sample preparation and analysis procedures for the samples are discussed. The data, analysis results, and comparisons of the P-7 and XRD results are presented. The quartz percent determined for the same sample by the two methods are different. In 85% of the samples analyzed, the quartz percents determined by the XRD method are higher than those obtained by the P-7 method. However, there is a strong linear relationship between the results from the two methods. Further, the XRD method indicates an average of 20 percent more quartz than that from the P-7 method. The reasons for the differences in the results and the need for additional studies are explored.

AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, in March, 1910, the death of Mr. Metcalf was announced, and Col. H. P. Bope, of Pittsburg, delivered in memory of him a brief but eloquent address, which, though expressing the sorrow of Mr. Metcalf's friends, and, in general terms,. the debt of gratitude which his country and his profession owed to him, was not intended to be a complete survey of his life and work. With Colonel Bope's permission, and with the aid of some of the statements in his address, I substitute for it, in our Transactions, this more detailed, yet still inadequate memorial. As Colonel Bope justly remarked, the men who could do justice to this theme-such men, as Jones, Chalfant, Bennett, Oliver, and Park-passed away before Metcalf, leaving him almost the last of the generation of great steel-makers who made Pittsburg the Sheffield of America, and who discharged a double function, as the rear-guard of the old metallurgical practice and the van-guard of the new. I knew many of them; would that I were better qualified to celebrate their achievements. William Metcalf was born Sept. 3, 1838, at Pittsburg, Pa., where his father, Orlando Metcalf, was an eminent member of the bar. At the age, of sixteen, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, at Troy, N. Y., from which he was graduated in June, 1858. Returning to his native city, he became an assistant engineer in the Fort Pitt Foundry, of which. he was made Superintendent in 1859. This famous establishment produced the largest castings and heaviest machinery then known in the United States;-and Mr. Metcalf's intense, intelligent and incessant study of his business prepared him as a manufacturer for a patriotic service to his country more valuable than, as a soldier, he could have rendered in the field. Electric furnace steelmaking dust is a polluting residue that needs to be treated in order to recover metals contained and to produce an environmentally acceptable residue. Some hydrometallurgical approaches for its treatment have been evaluated, namely: caustic soda leaching followed by electrolytic recovery of zinc, ammonia leaching followed by zinc compounds precipitation and acetic acid leaching followed by lead, zinc hydroxide and gypsum precipitation.

It's a pleasure to be included with this group. I am not here to sell my services, but rather to share with you some ideas and considerations on using environmental consultants. Environmental consultants have developed some problems as well as created new costs for companies that are as legitimate as engineering costs. Each day the mining industry is becoming more affected by the proliferation of environmental regulations and their interpretations by federal and state agencies. How does a modern mining company cope with all the demands for environmental consideration by regulatory agencies and special interest environmental groups-- yet produce a product and make a profit? One way is to make efficient use of environmental consultants. But, as everyone here knows, this approach has been fraught with seemingly inherent frustrations, difficulties, and much justified criticism.

Open-type, or main beam, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can achieve impressive rates of production. This type of TBM typically outperforms other types of TBMs currently in use around the world. In good ground conditions, main beam machines have achieved production rates of more than 1 km/month (0.6 miles/month). However, installing effective ground support in poorer rock conditions on main beam machines can be a major cause of concern. The design of main beam machines is such that installation of ground support equipment, particularly at the front of the machine in what is commonly known as the L1 support zone, has traditionally been limited to rock drills and basic working platforms. Personnel working in the L1 zone have, until recently, been protected by roof supports and extended fingers, often with restricted access to working areas.

The difference on particle density causes mass and size segregation in the blast furnace throat, causing poor permeability in radial and circumferential direction. Understanding the effect of density difference on particle spatial-temporal distribution helps stabilize smooth operation and improve energy ef ficiency of blast furnace iron-making process. Based on discrete element method simulation, the influence of density difference on particle segregation behaviors is quantitatively characterized by the proposed method when the binary-sized particles are charged from parallel-type hopper of blast furnace. The results show that increasing the 4 mm particle density aggravates the mass segregation in circumferential and radial direction, and the maximum standard deviation of each ring reaches as great as 0.415. For size segregation, the difference on average mass fraction of small particle between center and edge ring decreases from 0.373 to 0.301. When increasing the 6 mm particle density, the similar particle segregation behaviors could be obtained.

The complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.l It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to he drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the 0 phase, "CuAl2." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. In recent years, suction piles and suction anchors have been used as underwater foundations for various offshore structures. They have been proven very versatile, effective, and environmentally friendly. This paper describes the load resisting mechanism, installation, and design of suction piles and suction anchors. Also included are brief descriptions of three offshore structures that have recently been constructed using suction piles and suction anchors. They include: a new breakwater system utilizing gravity-type concrete caisson superstructure on top of concrete suction piles; a floating breakwater system utilizing embedded suction anchors; and a foundation system utilizing suction piles for temporary mooring of underwater tunnel elements.

Secondary aluminum dross, which has been exposed for several years to atmospheric conditions, was characterized using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical and scanning electronic microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Based on the characterization, a method to purify the solids is presented. This method starts with the washing of the dross in boiling water to eliminate the soluble compounds like Na and K, followed by the physical separation of the metallic aluminum by milling and screening. Finally, an acid lixiviation process is applied using three different acid solutions, HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4. The best results were obtained using HCl. The main insoluble components of the dross after lixiviation were Al, SiO2, and Al2O3. MgAl2O4, AlN, Si, and Na2Al22O3·2H20 species were also found. Based on the alumina content, the solid product could be suitable as a raw material in the manufacture of castable refractories or metal matrix composites.

The appraial of producing properties and profitability ntzalysis of a proposed capital expenditure are based on the same principles. In both problems a projection of future cash income is. cornpared to one or more capital expenditures. Several different methods have been in use either to compute a price to obtain a given earning power on the investment or to compute the earning power which will result from a given capital expenditure. One of these, the "Average Annual Rate of Return" method, computes in a simple manner the ratio of the present value of the future earnings after amortization to the present value of the undepreciated balances of the investment over the life of a project. This method, not well known generally, appears to have some rather unique advantages in reducing the computation work required, eliminating trial-and-error solutions, and providing a more accurate answer when applied to oil industry investments subject to the unit-of-production basis of amortization. Its derivation is given and its versatility demonstrated in the solution of certain everyday investment problems. A number of charts, useful in applying this method to profitability analysis and appraisal work, are provided. The current trend in the market values of producing properties is shown. INTRODUCTION Making sound capital expenditure decisions requires an objective means of measuring the productivity of individual investment proposals. Since the best measure of the economic worth of such proposals is their ability to produce profits, it is common practice to grade proposed capital expenditures according to their annual earning power as a percentage of the outstanding capital. The same principles which govern the determination of the rate of return of proposed capital expenditures also apply generally to the problem of determining the appraisal value or purchase price of income-producing oil and gas properties. Both problems are of prime importance in the producing phase of the oil business, where management is faced daily with decisions to drill or not to drill certain development wells, or with the determination of the appraisal value of producing properties. The common feature in both problems is that a projection of future cash income is compared with a known or estimated capital investment to determine itsiearning power or annual rate of return. In the case of development drilling, the cost of the proposed well can usually be estimated with a fair degree of accuracy and the problem consists of finding the rate of return on the invested capital. In the case of appraising producing properties, on the other hand, the desired rate of return is usually known in advance and the problem consists of determining the purchase price which, for the given income projection, results in the fequired rate of return. Certain accounting procedures common to the oil and gas producing business make these two problems and their solutions somewhat different from corresponding problems in other industries, and, in certain ways, simpler. The main difference is in the amortization policy which, for oil and gas production, is frequently on a unit-of-production basis, compared to the amortization on a time basis used in many other industries. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the various methods currently in use for the measurement of productivity of invested capital in producing properties and, in more detail, the derivation and application of what will be called the "Average Annual Rate of Return Method". This rather interesting and not too well known method has some very definite advantages in the solution of many problems common to the oil industry. For the sake of simplicity, federal income tax considerations have been disregarded in the examples used, since they do not affect the principles involved. The use of the production payment route in the sale or purchase of producing properties, which has been amply covered in many other publications, has also not been included in this analysis. METHODS FOK MEASUKING THE EARNING POWER OF INVESTED CAPITAL, Of the many different methods used to measure the earning power of invested capital, four are applicable to oil or gas production ventures. Depending on whether these four methods utilize one or two interest rates, and whether a fixed amortization pattern is used, they may be classified as follows.

Seismography is an extremely important subject in the context of rock blasting, especially in the current scenario, which involves the need for increased controls due to the growth of urban areas near open-pit mining operations. Worldwide, communities are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental and social impacts associated with mining activities. Therefore, maintaining good relationships with these stakeholders is essential to preserve the social license to operate and to comply with current legislation. This situation is exemplified in an open-pit iron mine near the capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where the community is located less than 40 meters from the pit boundaries. Blasting activities within the mining area occur at distances less than 500 meters from the nearest community, making continuous seismograph monitoring necessary to ensure that operational conditions are maintained without compromising exploitation efficiency. The threshold for peak particle velocity, according to Brazilian Standard 9653:2018 by ABNT, is 15 mm/s at frequencies around 4 Hz. However, even though the peak particle velocity commonly registered was inferior to 3 mm/s, there were still complaints from nearby residents regarding human discomfort. To further reduce vibration levels, a study was conducted to implement a new blast design, considering factors such as reducing bench height, altering the hole delays, maintaining the maximum charge per delay, and adjusting the drilling pattern without negatively affecting rock fragmentation quality. Following the implementation of the revised blasting parameters, seismographic measurements in the region decreased to below 0.6 mm/s. This significant reduction in ground vibrations contributed to minimizing community disturbances and fostering a more positive relationship between the company and its surrounding residents.

The purpose of the present communication is to put on record the discovery, in October, 1916, in the Howqua district, of a new locality for the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in Victoria, and to give a preliminary description of its characters and geological occurrence. Owing to the great use of superphosphates for agricultural purposes in recent years in Australia, search has been stimulated for the discovery of local and workable supplies of phosphatic rocks. Phosphorus is an element very widely distributed in igneous rocks, usually in the form of the mineral apatite, and also occurs in sedimentary rocks and in soils as a detrital constituent. Under these conditions of occurrence, however, the amount of P 205 present in a rock or soil seldom approaches, and very rarely exceeds, 1 %. Very occasionally it occurs in such a concentrated form as to constitute workable deposits. In such cases they are usually of organic origin. Research was performed to evaluate copper and silver extraction from samples of bornite flotation concentrate. Sulfation roasting experiments were performed in a rotary tube furnace, a fluidized bed reactor, and a static bed muffle furnace. Roasting was plagued with rapid, lowtemperature calcine sintering, apparently related to the presence of organic matter in the concentrate. Calcine entered a weak acid leaching process to remove copper, and silver was extracted from the weak acid leach residue in a ferric chloride and hydrochloric acid solution. Copper extraction efficiencies in excess of 90% were attained in the weak acid leach while 90% silver extraction was achieved in the ferric chloride leach, along with copper and lead extractions as high as 93% and 99% respectively. The two-stage leaching process resulted in overall extraction efficiencies of 99% copper and 90% silver.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has produced a generic in situ copper mine design manual, which contains a computerized cost model for in situ copper oxide mining. The model specifies (1) site-specific parameters, which must be quantified for mine design, (2) a method for minesite design based on those parameters, and (3) a procedure for assessing economic viability for the mine design. The menu-driven computer program performs calculations for developing commercial mine design specifications, as well as capital and operating costs. The default values are based on 1986 dollars, and indices for updating costs are included. The program also provides discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) and allows for sensitivity analyses for an in situ mining operation at any specific undisturbed copper oxide deposit. This report is to be used with the 1990 version of the computer program, which has been made user friendly. It describes the flies, tutorial, input phase, help function, and monitor display of all calculated values and of the DCFROR table. The monitor-displayed discounted initial value of investment and annual operating costs are defined. The dual rate-of-return situation and sensitivity analyses are also briefly discussed. Information is provided on obtaining the computer program on diskette.

This paper reviews the procedure used to quantify the conveyor frictional resistance on a 3.9 km (2.4 mile) long overland conveyor belt. Field torque measurements of the three drives were used to help fine tune a computer simulation of the conveyor. This enabled the prediction of the effect on various conveyor components that cold temperatures will have on increasing the throughput tonnage.

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent.
