Backfilling in Canadian mines has been practised for close to 100 years and evidence anticipates the application of mine fill technology at an increasing rate during the foreseeable future. The evolution of backfill technology is closely related to the advancement of modern mining methods and the development of new backfill technology continues to evolve. The authors, after conducting extensive surveys of backfill practices in underground mines across Canada, have concluded that, because backfill operations employ large quantities of cement and experience large costs associated both with backfilling practice and cement use, opportunities exist for reducing backfill energy costs and enhancing the application of alternative cementing agents in backfill. Consequently, the authors have developed an alternate, equally effective and lower cost binder agent replacement for cement, and incorporated waste glass into the development of a lower cost backfill (glassfill). This paper presents the results of two design stages associated with the development of glassfill: strength development and flow performance. The advancement of this technology has reached a stage that should promote industrial implementation within the Canadian mining industry. A number of Canadian mining operations exhibit potential for plant optimization through possible binder source replacement, and might thus realize associated reductions in backfill and energy costs.

"The ordinance of March 27, 1919, contains provisions relative to the exploration for, Ind the exploitations of bauxite in the Colony of Surinam in Dutch Guiana.Permission to explore is limited to: Netherlanders; inhabitants of the Netherlands; inhabitants of Surinam; companies established in Netherlands, and companies established in Surinam.Holders of concessions for the exploitation of bauxite are limited to companies established in the Netherlands, or in Surinam, and these must reside in the Colony or must be represented the constantly.A permission or concession lapses: (a) when the holder ceases to have the required qualifications; (b) on the death of the holder where the assigns fail within one year to prove the required qualifications.Any dispute concerning the required qualifications must be decided by the Judge in the manner to be regulated by colonial ordinance.The Governor may, after consultation with the Privy-Council reserve tracts of land for the exploration and exploitation of Bauxite, either for the Government directly, or for concession under special provisions. These provisions shall be fixed by virtue of the colonial ordinances.Application for permission to explore shall be made in accordance with existing laws. Simultaneous applications, those made on the same day, must be decided by drawing lots; but an application for the concession for exploitation has preference ovor that for permission for exploration. Provide coal mine shafts/slopes with an optimum coal mine shaft fire and smoke protection system composed of reasonably-priced, reliable hardware. Approach Accident and injury data indicate that a relatively low percentage (5%) of underground coal mine fires occur in shafts or slopes. Nevertheless, shaft or slope fires are extremely serious because they block critical escape routes for miners. That also can happen when combustion products resulting from fires in other mine areas contaminate shahs and slopes. Seeking the optimum configuration for a shaft/slope fire and smoke protection systems, the Bureau of Mines gathered data on the performance of existing fire detection devices and signal telemetry systems In several mines, and analyzed the generic protection needs of the U.S. underground coal mining industry. The optimum system developed by the Bureau provided an adequate number of detectors, a wide area of coverage, and an extensive data acquisition, analysis, display, and storage capability. This system. recommended for fabrication and in-mine testing, consisted of a microcomputer-controlled master panel located in the test mine's slope hoist room, and four remote units. Two of the remote units were placed on the surface atop upcast ventilation shafts, a third was situated underground near the slope bottom, and a fourth was installed at the slope top in intake air.

INTRODUCTION EVER since a genetic connection between many ore deposits and magmas began to be widely recognized, some two-score years ago, there has been much discussion of the complex and intricate problem of the genetic association of specific kinds of mineralization with specific kinds of igneous rocks. General discussions of the latter problem and pertinent data have been given by S. F. Emmons, Kemp, Lindgren, Niggli, Rastall, Spurr, Vogt, and others. In this paper no attempt is made to deal with mineral deposits genetically associated with volcanic rocks, but only with those presumed to be related to exposed intrusive masses. The writer is indebted to E. S. Bastin, F. F. "For engineering problems of “three under” coal (coal trapped under buildings, waters-bodies and railways) exploitation, environment protection and gangue separation from raw coal underground exist in Tangshan Coal Colliery. By analyzing concrete technical problems, a technical approach of closed cycle “coal mining-gangue washing-backfilling-coal mining”, i.e. integration of coal mining, gangue separation and solid backfilling, is put forward with key technologies including gangue transportation with great depth, gangue separation from raw coal underground and integration of coal mining and backfilling. Based on the specific geological conditions of Tangshan Coal Colliery, 591m vertical feeding transportation system with great depth is designed; meanwhile, for efficient gangue transportation, ancillary wear-resisting pipe size and buffer equipment are optimized. Underground gangue separation system is created to be joined with the existing production system and backfilling system; besides, as per separation characteristics of coal and gangue, buddle jig is adopted for gangue roughing of raw coal underground. By cooperation of backfilling hydraulic support and other key equipment, the designed stope backfilling system completely realizes integration of coal mining and backfilling. Engineering practice shows that, through the research and implementation of the above key technologies, integration of coal exploitation, gangue separation and solid backfilling is successfully implemented in Tangshan Coal Colliery; moreover, it completely solves the three major engineering problems and realizes waste disposal, underground washing and separation, and ground surface subsidence control.INTRODUCTIONSo far, “three under” coal (coal trapped under buildings, watersbodies and railways) and key state-owned coal resources trapped under villages in China have reached 13.7 billion t and 5.22 billion t, respectively. With the development of coal enterprises, China currently has more than 1,600 gangue dumps (Miao et al., 2010a) with accumulated stack amount of 4.5 billion t, occupying a land area of 150,000 km2; moreover, surface subsidence caused by mining activities has damaged the environments of industry, agriculture, transportation and living, while new environmental pollution sources formed by coal related industries also result in damage to ecological environment (Huang et al., 2011a). On the one hand, due to large scale coal mining, some coal collieries suffering from resource exhaustion are faced with survival problems; on the other hand, coal mining has caused and been faced with increasingly prominent environmental problems, such as “three under” coal exploitation, waste disposal and ground surface subsidence control (Miao et al., 2010b; Zhang et al., 2009)."

A resistência à corrosão e mecânica dos aços inoxidáveis duplex dependem da distribuição de fases, portanto, é fundamental a compreensão das transformações microestruturais que ocorrem na zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) em função do aporte de calor em processos de soldagem. A fim de investigar a evolução microestrutural no aço inoxidável duplex SAF 2205 durante a soldagem, foram simulados na Gleeble dois ciclos térmicos com aporte de calor de 15 e 30 kJ/cm, considerando a temperatura de pico de 1350°C, seguido de têmpera a 500 e 250°C. As microestruturas na condição de como recebido e da ZTA simulada foram caracterizadas através de microscopia óptica (MO) e de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Foram utilizadas diferentes técnicas metalográficas para a caracterização da microestrutura e identificadas três diferentes morfologias de austenita: nos contornos de grão, austenita Widmanstätten e a austenita intragranular, assim como diferentes frações volumétricas destas fases.

Introduction Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the operating company for a consortium of industry and government participants that produce synthetic crude oil from their leases in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Production from the $2.3 billion (1978) integrated mining, extraction, and bitumen upgrading and utility complex started in September 1978. Production is currently about 6.4 Mm3/a (40 million bbl per year) of high quality synthetic crude oil. This is done by upgrading the extracted bitumen from the oil sands mined. Plans are to increase the production to 8 Mm3/a (50 million bbl pier year) by 1989. At that time, the mining operation will be required to deliver 100 Mt/a (110 million stpy) of oil sand (ore) to the extraction plants, and handle quantities of waste ranging from 50 to 75 Mt/a (55 to 83 million stpy). The Syncrude plant is located at Mildred Lake, 40 km (25 miles) north of Fort McMurray and 480 km (300 miles) north of Edmonton, Alberta. Climate, particularly winter, is therefore a major factor affecting the design and operation of all the Syncrude production facilities. Bitumen production, consisting of overburden removal, oil/sand mining, bitumen extraction, and tailings disposal, account for about half the total SCO production costs. Considerable research and development, therefore, continues to be applied to improve both material handling and bitumen recovery methods. Potential applications for feeder breakers were identified in the material handling aspects of both overburden and oil sand mining to reduce cost and to attain planned production increments. Overburden removal Overburden materials on the leases comprise thin Pleistocene sands, gravel and fill, and sands, silts and clays of the thicker Clearwater Formation with the silt to clay components predominating. The latter contains multiple leases of hard siltstone with unconfined compressive strengths up to 148 MPa and thicknesses up 0.1 to 0.9 m (1 to 3ft). Characteristics of the overburden as well as the climatic environment and scale of operation present unique problems for the efficient removal of the material. In a bucketwheel/conveyor system, the weak silty clay formations require relatively flat working slopes for safe operation, while the siltstone lenses and frozen overburden require blasting or selective removal by other equipment. These factors, combined with the normal bucketwheel/conveyor design parameters, lead to high capital investment and relatively inefficient use of that capital. This contribution deals with the mineral processing of Li-silicate greisen-type ores comprising of quartz, topaz and zinnwaldite (lithium-rich mica). The origin of the greisen-type ores processed is the Ore Mountains(Germany) where it is explored as a potential resource for the production of lithium carbonate. The goal is to develop a process chain for the enrichment of zinnwaldite using dry techniques only. As basis for the investigation the process chain, which historically was used to process the greisen focused on cassiterite and wolframite, is taken and modified towards the zinnwaldite. Starting with crushed material with particle sizes smaller than 35 millimeters, investigations on different approaches to grinding to liberate mica from gangue are carried out. Concentrates of zinnwaldite are then produced by magnetic separation of size fractions. To assess the success of grinding, classification and separation, mineral liberation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy are used. The amount of lithium measured in the sample with atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to calculate the content of zinnwaldite based on its known mineral chemistry. Combined with the particle size distributions, product qualities are determined. Altogether, this allows the thorough evaluation of the success of comminution with focus on following steps of concentration. The standard industrial method of arsenic removal from acidic aqueous processing effluents involves coprecipitation of arsenic with ferric iron (Fe/As>3) by lime neutralization in continuous circuits. To better understand current industrial practice, continuous circuit coprecipitation experiments were performed to identify industrially relevant process parameters and co-ion solutes that contribute to improved arsenic removal and retention. The coprecipitated solids were subjected to accelerated ageing at 20°, 40° & 70°C and arsenic behavior was monitored and modeled. Staging and the presence of calcium ions were found to have the most significant impact on arsenic retention. In this paper the techniques used and major results obtained are discussed.

The particle settling velocity is the argument of separation in such processes as classification and enrichment in jigs. It characterizes material forwarded to the separation process and belongs to the so-called complex arguments because it is the function of particle density and size. i.e. the function of two simple arguments. The affiliation to a given subset is determined by the values of two mag-nitudes and the distribution of such argument in a sample is the function of distributions of particle density and size. The paper will present a method of determining the distribution of settling velocity in the sample of spherical particles for the turbulent particle motion in which the settling velocity is expressed by the Newton formula. Because it depends on density and size of particle which are random variable of certain distributions, the settling velocity is a random variable. Applying theorems of probability, concerning distributions of function of random variables, the authors will present general formula of probability density function of settling velocity for the turbulent motion and particularly calculate probability density function for Weibull?s forms of frequency functions of particle size and density. Distribution of settling velocity will calculate numerically and perform in graphical form.

INTRODUCTION The King and Beaver mines of Asbestos Corporation Limited (ACL) were joined in 1957 to form the King-Beaver mine. In 1964, ACL purchased the Johnson's Asbestos Company. The combined underground workings are a part of the King- Beaver mine. Asbestos ore is mined at the rate of 4080 metric tons per day (mtpd) to provide 15% of the company's daily requirement in the Thetford Mines area. Figure 1 shows the location of Thetford Mines. Two shafts service the underground. No. 3 shaft, 457 m deep, is used for personnel and material transportation, downcast ventilation, and ore hoisting. No. 4 shaft, 820 m to the south, is 389 m deep. It is used for material transportation and upcast ventilation. Figure 2 shows the relative locations of the shafts and the underground workings. The ore is mined by block caving. HISTORY The orebody outcropped at surface and was first mined as an open pit. Underground mining commenced when open pit mining became impractical. Shrinkage stoping, used initially, was unsatisfactory in the highly fractured ore. Sublevel stoping improved ore recovery and safety, but did not overcome the adverse effects of the un- stable rock. Observations of the rock failures indicated that block caving would be satisfactory. This was confirmed by careful investigation and testing. A method of block caving similar to that used at the Miami Copper Company was adopted. The first block commenced production in June 1933. BLOCK CAVING General A large block of ore is undercut above pre- pared drawpoints. The ore above the undercut caves by its own weight. Caving progresses up- ward as the caved ore is drawn. A large proportion of the rock breaks up in the caving action so that it will pass through the drawpoints. Oversize blocks are broken by drilling and blasting or mudcapping. Figure 3 shows the progressive stages of block caving. In the central part of the ore zone, the vertical dimension of a block is determined by the 132 metres between production levels. When isolated ore pockets are developed, the vertical dimensions of a block depend on the extension of the ore zone above the undercut. The minimum horizontal dimension of an under- cut determines the cavability of the overlying block. When necessary, caving is assisted by drilling long horizontal holes into the block above the undercut and blasting them. This procedure speeds up or restarts caving. It will not ensure complete caving of blocks having undercuts less than 30 m wide. Orebodies suitable for block caving are highly fractured and wide enough to cave freely without excessive dilution. Or that the mining division has 800 machines in operation worldwide, 100 of them in the United States. And the company currently holds 30% of market share worldwide and 10% in the United States. Forget about the fact that it has already sold more machines world-wide this year than it did during 1995. None of that is good enough. O&K Mining GmbH Dortmund is the mining division of Germany’s giant O&K Orenstein and Koppel. It is one of three divisions of O&K Orenstein and Koppel AG, a US$1.2-billion company. The other two divisions are construction equipment and escalators. The mining division, though, is one of the company’s most successful.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to melt and cast specimens of hafnium- carbon alloy and studied their properties . A rotating - ladle vacuum or inert atmosphere arc furnace was designed , special electrodes and molds were developed , and operating procedures were worked out for casting small shapes . The cast specimens were evaluated according to their carbon content for melting point , density , microhardness , electrical resistivity , and oxidation resistance . Lattice dimensions were determined , and metallographic specimens were prepared . Photomicrographs were taken of specimens containing 2.72 , 5.50 , 6.47 , 9.97 , 12.8 , and 15.7 weight - percent carbon , and their grain structures were compared .

First comes our definition of education--and education is not the merely formal acquiring of academic knowledge, but the understanding, using and projection of knowledge into our channels of life and thought activity. This past year makes us realize the extent to which price and economic cut-off may stimulate or curtail exploration,, But exploration does not consist solely in the discovery of sources of material. There is just as inspiring and imaginative a territory in the develop¬ment of uses and application--and no one in our base metal industry but would hope that our educational processes would fertilize those springs of inspiration that lie dormant in us all, toward the- imaginative conception of new uses--lead roofing cloths or felts, non-tarnishable copper utensils, further zinc solid state application. Thus an educational pattern should seek to develop imagination and thinking beyond--the possibility of that small but oh so difficult step just ahead of the existing,

A survey was conducted relating to the current practices for the classification of hazardous locations in coal preparation plants. Several plants processing bituminous, anthracite and lignite coal in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Dakota, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming were visited. Coal preparation plant operations and designers as well as MESA inspectors were interviewed. The National Electrical Code was discussed with selected members of the NFPA committee and electrical equipment manufacturers. Data provided by MESA on fire and explosion accidents in coal preparation plants were examined. The requirements of the pertinent Federal Regulations, National Electrical Code, National Electrical Manufacturers Association and Underwriters' Laboratories were compared and evaluated. This report consists of two parts. Part I: "Analysis and Review" provides a summary of the findings. Part II: "Recommended Guidelines" consists of recommended uniform guidelines that may be used for interpreting the National Electrical Code as it applies to the classification of hazardous areas in coal preparation plants.

This paper reports the effect of using High Density Poly-Ethylene (HDPE)/coke blends on the reduction behaviour of Mn3O4 to MnO at 1000°C. The results suggest that CH4 release increases with increasing HDPE addition. The results show that the rapid release of methane, over only the initial five minutes, limited the interaction of Mn3O4/MnO with CH4. With the devolatilisation of HDPE there was increased porosity in samples containing HDPE, assumed to be the major factor in differences of reduction rates.

"The oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase showed typical enzymatic kinetics. The oxidation was inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide, a glutathione reductase inhibitor. Superoxide dismutase had no significant effect on the oxidation, indicating non-involvment of the superoxide radical. The vanadate(V) reduction was found to be a one-electron transfer process. These results suggest a new pathway for vanadate(V) metabolism and a new function of glutathione reductase. Compounds of vanadium(V), such as NaV03 , exert potent toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems (1-3). Despite intense current activity, however, the biochemical mechanism of vanadate(V) toxicity is still not well understood (1- 14). It is believed that one of the important pathways involves the oxidation (by vanadate(V)) of NAD(P)H (15, 16), but, to our knowledge, there has been no report of the identification of any vanadate(V) reductase. With a view to finding if there exists any vanadate(V) reductase, we have investigated the oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase. Glutathione reductase (GSSG-R)2 was selected because our previous studies have shown (17) that GSSG-R can act as a reductase for chromate(VI), which is isoelectronic with vanadate(V). We find that GSSG-R does indeed function as a NADPH-dependent vanadate(V) reductase, thus pointing to a new pathway for the metabolism of vanadate(V), as well as to this property for GSSG-R. MATERIALS AND METHODSSodium metavanadate (NaV03 ), henceforth vanadate, was purchased from Aldrich and its solution was always freshly prepared. The GSSG·R used was from bovine intestinal mucosa and was purchased from Sigma. The oxidation of NADPH was followed photometrically as the decrease in absorbance at 340 nm. The spin trap, 5,5-dimethyl- pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), was purchased from Aldrich and used without further purification, since very weak or no spin adduct signal was obtained from the purchased sample when used alone.ESR spectra were obtained at X-band (9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200 ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035A) and the microwave frequency was measured with a digital frequency counter (Hewlett-Packard, Model 5340A). An ASPECT 2000 computer was used for data storage and analysis. The concentrations given in the figure legends are the final concentrations. All experiments were carried out in the phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2) and at room temperature."

To capture efficiently the valuable trace metals from nickel slag using electric furnace, it is important to study their distributions between the slag and metallic phases in the furnace. It is impossible to calculate accurately these distributions without experimental measurements. Therefore, in this work, selected trace metal distributions and phase equilibria between K2O containing iron-silicate slags and a metallic Ni-Fe-Cu alloy in nickel slag cleaning furnace conditions were studied. The experimental method developed and applied during the work, involved a modified quenching technique that included equilibration of the samples in semi-sealed quartz ampoules in an inert atmosphere and metallic Fe saturation. The use of the semi-sealed quartz ampoule prevents the escape of volatile elements from the sample during equilibration. Chemical compositions of the phases and the trace elements were analysed by EPMA. From the measured compositions, the trace metal distribution coefficients between the molten Ni-Fe-Cu alloy and slag were calculated.

THE success of a coal-mining venture as relates to operations at the gob or break-line, such as the drawing of pillars or the working of long-faces, depends upon the control of face conditions. The measures required to control the latter are dependent upon the action of the coal seam, roof and floor at and in the vicinity of the faces, but the manner in which these will act is dependent upon the rate of face movement as well as upon the face characteristics and upon the forces exerted. Yet the merits of a method of working-the practicability of controlling face conditions and the means required for such control when applied to any particular case-are usually judged only upon a consideration of the characteristics of coal seam, roof and floor, and the manner in which they have been observed to act. Practically every coal-mining man knows that face conditions are influenced by the rate of face movement, but few have appreciated that this is as much of a factor in the control of face conditions as are the face characteristics and the forces exerted. Fewer yet have recognized or taken advantage of faster rates of face movement as one of the principal means of establishing control of face conditions or of securing more favorable face conditions. Seemingly inherent difficulties, particularly in the control of roof conditions, but also in the control of conditions of the coal seam and floor, are frequently mitigated or disappear when the rate of movement of the faces is sufficiently increased. The characteristics of the coal seam, roof and floor and the forces exerted upon them do determine the general trend or tendency of face action, but the manner in which the coal seam, roof and floor will act and be acted upon and the magnitude of the action during the time the site of mining operations remains at any particular point is very largely determined by the rate of movement of the faces.

The new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure—the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, and not a few were directly initiated by them.
