"Aluminum metal-matrix composites are lightweight materials that have the potential to supplant steel in many applications. The current work helps to identify the parameters that confer maximal strength and ductility. Torsion tests were performed on the as-cast aluminum metal-matrix composite A359-SiCp-30% at a variety of temperatures and twist rates. Dependence of material properties on temperature and strain rate were identified from equivalent stress-strain curves constructed from the reduced data. Examination of the microstructure was performed on the as-cast material and on fracture surfaces. A temperature-and strain rate-dependent constitutive model was applied to simulation of the mechanical response of the torsion specimen. Trends in material properties corroborate and extend trends identified previously under tensile loading with regard to temperature and strain rate dependence. Shear properties of simulated specimens agree with properties obtained through experimentation.IntroductionAluminum metal-matrix composites (A1-MMCs) have become increasingly popu1ar in recent years. While unreinforced aluminum alloys have low densities and high ductilities, they are not suitable for many applications due to their lack of strength and stiffness. To provide added strength and stiffness while maintaining favorable densities, it has become common to reinforce aluminum alloys with silicon carbide in various forms, although usually the inclusions are in the form of whiskers or particles. The result is a composite material with superior specific strength and stiffness. While whisker-reinforced composites are expensive due to the necessity of processing by nonstandard techniques and have low transverse properties when rolled, particle reinforced Al-MMCs have transverse material property values almost as high as the longitudinal properties and are not as expensive to process as whisker-reinforced Al-MMCs [1]."

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

Flotation circuit performance has become increasingly more challenging due to the complexity of available ore sources. To optimize value mineral recovery, the mineralogical composition of the ore should be evaluated and understood. Utilizing a variety of mineralogical and analytical tools, flotation processing challenges can be overcome and potential limitations understood. In this paper, several case studies will be discussed in terms of the value that has been provided through the use of mineralogical analysis to optimize flotation performance.

This paper describes the use of the magnetometer, under geological direction, in exploration of the Sudbury nickel district. The writer's experience at Falconbridge has led him to the belief that only through detailed work, and by careful correlation of both geological and geophysical results, can geophysical prospecting methods be applied successfully to mining exploration problems. It is hoped that the basic technique described in the paper will be found to have general application.

There is much comment at present in the ranks of the oil industry regarding unit operation of oil fields and the benefit that would accrue if it could be extensively applied. It seems certain that, as an immediate corrective of the present situation, overproduction could be effectively curtailed with all the advantages of proper conservation of petroleum resources and with no important loss to anyone connected with the industry. Unit Operation in Certain Foreign Fields Many an oil operator in America would doubtless like to have exclusive control of one or more oil-bearing structures for development in accordance with the economic position of the industry and especially in accordance with the best production practice known. A few operators now have this privilege, particularly in certain foreign fields, and are following lines of procedure which show that they are aware of the great opportunity that is theirs. We find in an article by Professor Strigeoff,1 and in a paper read by Captain Comins2 before the American Petroleum Institute, the outlines of procedure adopted, respectively, by the Soviet Government for the nationalized Russian oil fields and by the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. for its fields in Persia. Comprehensive plans for the unit operation of other oil fields may have been described publicly but no such descriptions have come to the attention of the writer. New fields are coming more and more into the hands of single operators or of a few who control large activities and who appreciate fully the need for cooperative action and are willing to forego the lure of a large quick profit from high flush production in order to secure the advantage of better stabilization in the industry and a larger though more deferred profit by operating the field as a unit. Much can be done toward efficient development of an oil field controlled by a few operators who are willing to cooperate for that purpose, but the best result can be obtained only by pooling their interests in the field

The structure, properties, and composition of commercial chelating-type copper extractants are examined. Characterization of these extractants was accomplished using organic separation techniques and analytical tools such as NMR and IR. Results indicate that only the trans isomer of the diphenylhydroxyoxime (LIX (R) 64N) is capable of copper chelation. The effect of the structural modification of the extractants on the extraction and stripping reactions are discussed.

"Fine particle recovery by conventional flotation processes is very low mainly due to the low probability of bubble/particle collision and adhesion. In order to solve the problem of low particle recovery, several flotation technologies have been developed to increase bubble/particle collision efficiency. Among these technologies, the electroflotation process stands out. This process has advantages in the generation of microbubbles (<100 µm) and in the production of different amounts of hydrogen and oxygen microbubbles. These advantages favorably influence the fine particle floatability, due to the greater probability of particle/bubble collision and adhesion. The electroflotation tests were conducted for a hematite/sodium oleate system in a Partridge-Smith modified electroflotation binary cell of 0.38 L usable volume. The sodium oleate concentration, particle size, pH and current density were evaluated. Satisfactory results in the recovery of hematite were found at pH values of 7, reaching hematite floatability of 99% and 90% with hydrogen and oxygen bubbles, respectively.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of fine and ultrafine particles is normally very low and is caused by several factors, among them, the low probability of collision and adhesion bubble-particle, the difficulty to overcome the energy barrier (entrainment and entrapment), low selectivity, surface oxidation and mineralogical changes (Schulze et al., 1989; Waters et al., 2008; Shahbazi et al., 2010). This problem can be overcome by decreasing the bubble size or by increasing the apparent particle size. However, it is worth noting that the use of small bubbles or micro bubbles also involves some disadvantages such as their low momentum resulting in a slower process comparing with conventional flotation. Electroflotation is an attractive alternative for treating fine particles with small bubbles less than 100 µm, generated by the electrolysis of water. Electroflotation is one of the variants of the flotation process, where the gaseous phase is produced by electrolysis of an aqueous solution, generating oxygen and hydrogen bubbles (Sarkar, 2010; Gupta and Ali, 2012). These smaller size bubbles allow the recovery of fine particles by increasing the collision efficiency. This process is versatile and competitive in relation to other techniques such as dissolved air flotation and dispersed air flotation because the electroflotation units are smaller, more compact and require less maintenance and less operating cost than other flotation units (Zouboulis and Matis, 1995,). In addition, the electroflotation process is a clean technique and provides results in a short time, requiring only the investment in the electroflotation cell construction stage and the choice of the electrodes (Ketkar et al., 1991; Sarkar et al., 2010; Sun et al., 2011). In this sense, this study assesses the effect of pH, particle size and sodium oleate concentration on electroflotation of hematite fines."

Ground pressures are monitored through use of aluminum platens coupled with d copper flat jack. How It Works The Bureau&apos;s instrument measures mining-induced pressure changes by transmitting strata pressure through the aluminum platens to an oil-filled borehole platened flat jack (BPF). Pressure in the flat jack is displayed on a gage located outside of the borehole. The instrument is in-stalled in the borehole by inflating the flat jack using a hand-held hydraulic pump. In addition, the platens have been designed to allow up to three BPFs to be installed in a single borehole, thus permitting pressure change measurements in more than one direction from a single borehole. THE manufacture of optical glass is a process that demands careful regulation and control at all stages in order that satisfactory results may be obtained. The product, to serve its purpose, must meet stringent requirements, which can be assured only by careful procedure in manufacture. During the greater part of the time that a pot of glass is in the furnace, temperatures should be kept within certain rather narrow limits; a departure on either side is likely to be detrimental to the glass and may result in total loss. If the temperature during melting and fining be low, the melt is likely not to fine properly and the glass will contain quantities of bubbles, or "seed," or it may become milky and unfit for use; too high a temperature, on the other hand, is severe on the pot and may cause it to leak or cast stones, or the increased solution of pot material in the melt may acid to the color of the glass and decrease its transmission. Moreover, variations in the working temperature will mean variations in the amount of selective volatilization and, consequently, variations in optical properties from pot to pot. Furthermore, in the closing stages of furnace treatment, the melt is cooled until a certain degree of stiffness is attained, when the pot is withdrawn. The quality of the glass-its freedom from striae and bubbles-will depend in large measure on whether the temperature to which cooling has been carried is suitable. For each type of glass there is a narrowly restricted range of temperature to which each pot of the given type should be cooled before withdrawal. A quick and reliable method of measuring temperatures is, therefore, of the first importance. In the optical-glass work conducted by the staff of the Geophysical Laboratory during the period of the war, much attention was given to the clatter of determining what methods would meet the requirements. This article will deal with these investigations and with the application of the results to actual practice at various plants. Hydro-Jex© releaching was undertaken during the summer of 2010 at the Valley Leach Facility (VLF) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine. Several advancements to the technique were made in response to the technical design and operational challenges posed by the unique site conditions. New geophysical resistivity monitoring techniques were developed to monitor solution migration during the injections. These developments are presented along with discussion of gold production resulting from the project.

As part of its program to lessen dependence on foreign bauxite as the Nation&apos;s primary source of cell-grade alumina, the Bureau of Mines is investigating sulfuric acid (H2S04) leaching procedures for the recovery of alumina from domestic aluminous materials. The successful application of a H2S04 leaching process depends on the recovery of the aluminum values in an easily washed and filtered form, containing a minimum of water to be driven off in the subsequent calcination step. This goal was met by the high-temperature hydrolysis of simulated aluminum sulfate [A12(S04)3] leach liquor. Crystalline, insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate [A1(OH)S04], which had a water-to-alumina mole ratio of 1:1, was produced. Eighty-six percent of a solution containing 127 g of A12(S04)3 per liter and 76 pct of a solution containing 336 g of A12(S04)3 per liter were hydrolyzed to insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate by autoclaving for 1 hr at 320° C and rapidly quenching to room temperature. Higher operating temperatures were precluded by corrosion of the autoclave. The yield of aluminum in the hydrolysis product increased with increasing hydrolysis temperature and decreasing A12(S04)3 concentration.

A central termoelétrica número 1 (CTE#1) da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional possui duas caldeiras em operação denominadas 8 e 9 com capacidade total de produção de vapor de 200 Toneladas por hora. Estas caldeiras fornecem vapor para os turbo geradores e turbo sopradores da CTE#1, além de vapor de processo para a Usina Presidente Vargas (UPV). As caldeiras entraram em operação em 1982/83 e seus sistemas de controle e instrumentação eram totalmente pneumáticos. Ao longo do tempo foi surgindo dificuldades para reposição e manutenção dos componentes pneumáticos, motivo pelo qual se iniciaram os estudos para substituição deste sistema. Em 2009 teve início um projeto para substituição do controle pneumático por um controle microprocessado feito por PLC redundante trabalhando com um supervisório scada e para substituição das malhas de instrumentação pneumática por instrumentação em rede fieldbus. A substituição completa dos componentes pneumáticos foi concluída em 2012. O novo sistema implantado trouxe diversas melhorias na performance, confiabilidade, segurança operacional e ergonomia. Este trabalho apresenta as causas que motivaram o projeto em questão, a metodologia utilizada para a sua implantação e os resultados alcançados com a aplicação de tecnologia moderna para controle e instrumentação de caldeiras.

The installation of the Gayley dry-air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Go., for the reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, 011 a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by " messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. On the basis of our own experience, we argued that if the moisture could be kept low, and also uniform, the cost of installation would be more than justified. I am in hearty disagreement with the recommendation that geophysics should be done by cooperative work between a geologist and a geophysi-cist. That arrangement would be comparable to doing petrography by having a physicist at the microscope and a geologist sitting by his side. The interpretation of the geological significance of geophysical data can be done efficiently only by a physicist who has become also a good geologist or by a geologist who is also a good geophysicist. Less Well-trained Men The rank and file, composing perhaps two-thirds of the personnel of exploratory geophysics, is not, and should not be, composed of highly trained men. The routine, stereotyped character of the work and the impossibility of promotion of more than a few from these lower ranks even under the best circumstances justify companies in filling the bulk of these rank and file positions with men having only a bachelor&apos;s degree at the most. There can be a wide range of training for such positions, although certain lines of study are preferred for certain kinds of work, and different employers have different preferences. For work in gravitational and magnetic prospecting, first preference will be for men having geological training and second for men with civil engineering training. In seismic work, men with geological training are preferred by some employers for computers; physicists, electrical engineers and all whose technical education has covered radio circuits are preferred for the other technical positions. Collegiate training in geophysical prospecting brings no preference and by many employers is given a slightly inferior rating. One large company seldom hires men who have just graduated with a major in geophysical prospecting. This prejudice is based on the reasoning that much of what is learned in college is obsolete or obsolescent, that most of the techniques learned in college will have to be unlearned, because different from those used by the employing company, and that in the long run additional courses in basic physics, mathematics and geology are of more value to a man than the courses on geophysical prospecting. Lichens are a symbiosis of fungi and algae. Air borne elements and gases are absorbed very efficiently over the entire surface of the lichen, because they have no protective structures such as a waxy cuticle or stomata. A survey in 1977 (one year before the Sudbury Regreening program began), indicated that several Cladonia spp had invaded the soil in Sudbury’s open birch woodlands. Pollution sensitive species such as Cladonia rangiferina and C. mitis occurred 20–25 km from the smelters. It was anticipated that the improvements in air quality and reclamation efforts would allow a natural invasion of pollution sensitive species into what once was a lichen desert that surrounded the smelters. The purpose of this project was to study the invasion of terricolous (soil-inhabiting) communities of lichens and mosses on reclaimed land in the Sudbury region 45 years after commencement of the Sudbury Regreening Program.
