The aim of the project was to experimentally determine the coefficient of restitution, and static and rolling friction of Eskom-grade coal for discrete element modelling (DEM). These parameters will be used in further DEM studies to simulate the flow and behaviour of coal during conveyance. For the simulation to yield realistic results, the parameters for the different coal shapes identified in the samples were determined. DEM uses spherical particles, and it was found that the difference between the DEM default parameters and those measured is significantly different, by as much as 97%, which illustrates the importance of experimentally determining these parameters. The spherical particles in DEM can be used to construct the various coal shapes identified, and the parameters measured can be used to simulate realistic results. The conveyance system can then be optimized accordingly.

LEAD SMELTERS AND REFINERS in 1932 were confronted with the problem of adjusting operations and costs to curtailed production and consumption at reduced prices, a problem which has been partially solved at least by improvements in operating technique and increased efficiency. At the Mount Isa properties in Australia, a third blast furnace and additional Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines were installed during the year, designed to increase the production to 6,000 tons of bullion per month. The large proportion of lead carbonate in the ores to be treated has presented metallurgical problems. Of the total lead contained in the concentrates to be smelted, two-thirds is Dresent as carbonates and one-third as sulfides. In the iiitial operations, the resulting Dwight-Lloyd sinter was soft, contained an excessive amount of fines, and was easily fusible. When charged to the blast furnaces it developed accretions in the upper part of the furnace owing to the easily fusible lead carbonates softening and fusing at the top of the charge column. This was remedied by the addition to the sinter feed of diluents of higher melting point, granulated slag and crushed limestone. The sinter feed consists of concentrates, Cottrell dust and wind-box cleanings, totalling 57 per cent of the charge; return sinter fines 15 per cent; granulated slag 23 per cent; and crushed limestone 5 per cent. The sinter produced contains 34 per cent lead and 0.5 per cent sulfur. Experiments indicated that double sintering under these conditions was of no advantage, so the original plan of single sinter treatment was retained.

INTRODUCTION From a tax viewpoint, United States mining companies are at a substantial disadvantage in the international mining area compared with companies in other major capital-exporting countries, according to a 1975 study by Coopers & Lybrand for the American Mining Congress. The study compared the relative tax position of a United States investor with investors from Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The comparison was based on average rates of return realizable by investor companies on four mine-model investments in twelve capital-importing countries. The countries in which these investments were assumed to be made are varied in their tax systems so that a wide range of possibilities was included in the analyses. Each mine model was standard so that the rates of return for each investment by each investor were affected solely by the respective tax systems of the capital-exporting and capital-importing countries. UNITED STATES POSITION The study found that the United States competitive position, in terms of the average rate of return on an overall basis, ranked next to last among the nine capital-exporting countries in the study. Further, the United States overall rate of return is more than 20% below that of the country (Japan) with the highest overall rate of return. On an average return-on-equity basis, the United States' position among the nine investor countries, for each of the mine investments studied, was: copper, eighth; iron ore, sixth; nickel, fifth; manganese, a tie for last place. Figure 1 shows the overall results realized by each capital-exporting country on the basis of average return on equity. [ ] The frequency with which a given capital-exporting country attains the highest or next highest rate of return in a capital-importing country provides further insight and another basis for comparing the tax laws of the capital-exporting countries. Of the situations compared in the study, the United States never attained the highest rate of return, and reached the second and third highest rate of return in only two instances. The tables showing the frequencies of rankings are given in Table 1 for each of the four mine models. In summary, the United States mining company does not have a competitive advantage under the tax rules when competing for mineral concessions in other countries. The United States company, in fact, appears to be at a clear disadvantage. The study also considered the effect of the following recent tax proposals on United States investors in international mining ventures:

In a paper contributed by W. A. Goodyear, M.E., on "Water Gas as Fuel," read at the Boston Meeting, February, 1883,* the following statenlent was made: "The latest experiments on a scale of some magnitude in our citier, in the way of heating buildings and furnishing power for manufacturing purposes, have been by the distribution of high-presslire steam through pipes laid in the streets. Hilt these experiments (1) have not hitherto been very successful; and when we consider the high cost and (2) the great and unavoidable loss of heat and power, which always accompany the conveyance of high-pressnre steam to any considerable distance in pipes, to say nothing of (3) certain practical difficulties in the management of the pipes themselves, (4) it is evident that all such methods must eventually disappear before a system which can furnish a cheap gas of great heating power, easily distributed wherever wanted, without requiring pipes to stand pressures of 50 to 75 pounds per square inch, and (5) without keeping the whole mass of ground in the streets through which it passes hot, gratis, for a distance of ten or fifteen feet, in all directions around the pipes!' For the purpose of controverting Mr. Goodyear's statements in regard to steam-distribution in cities, I hare numbered the points made in his indictment, my principal object being, not a professional discussion of the technical and theoretical merits of steam vs. watergas, but a simple statement of facts, in regard to the present state of the street system of steam distribntion. Taking Mr. Goodyear's points in their order: 1. Concerning what he terms " These experiments," saying that they " have not hitherto been very successful," I propose to show, that the problem of stearn-distribution has passed beyond the experimental stage, and that its practical solution is highly successful. Provide a means for reliable in situ stress change measurements in soft, friable geologic materials under high stress. Background Effective mine design requires a knowledge of changes in rock stress generated by a mining operation. In situ stress measurement can provide a means of obtaining this knowledge from an active mine for the ultimate purpose of design verification and analysis. The Bureau of Mines has designed and tested a device for measuring changes in rock stress-the borehole platened flatjack (BPF). It has found application in investigating stress anomalies due to geologic structures, stress concentrations from multiple seam interaction, and stress abutments from pillar retreat and longwall mining.

THE experimental work herein described is presented in support of the following broad hypothesis: Conditioning of metals and metallic sulphides by amine collectors involves metathetic reaction at the solid surface between the collector and an oxidized metallic compound, to produce a coating comprising an amine-bearing compound of low solubility in the system. The type of reaction is different in acid and in basic solutions; both types may occur simultaneously in near-neutral pulps. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments comprise contact-angle tests with a variety of metals and metallic sulphides and extraction tests on ground chalcocite. Contact-angle tests were made principally on metals. Covellite paralleled metallic copper in amine solution at pH 8.8 (Table 3) and in alkaline water, but maintained an angle of about 70° in 10-3 HCl solution, where metallic copper lost its angle. The tests with anionic collectors (Table I) indicate that the behavior of metals in general is parallel to that of their minerals in anionic solutions. It is believed that this is generally true with cationic collectors also, but the covellite test is a warning against a broad assumption to this effect. All test specimens were mounted in Transoptic.* All tests in conditioning solution were preceded by a test in distilled water; cleaning and polishing were continued in every case until the angle in water was zero. Subsequent transfers into and out of solutions and test cells were made in such a way as to prevent exposure of the surface to air.1 The amine used was primary laurylamine, Armour and Co., AM-1120. It was used in the form of the hydrochloride, obtained by precipitation with gaseous hydrochloric acid from an ether solution of the amine, and purified by two recrystallizations from ether-alcohol.2 Inorganic and other test reagents were standard laboratory grades. [ ] Temperatures were not controlled; the probable range of test-solution temperatures is 65° t0 80°F.

Extensive deposits of bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite coals occur in the western United States (Figure 1). Over one trillion tons of identified resources have been located and inferred by geologists and more than 200 million tons of western coal are mined annually (1). In the future, production of western coals will increase significantly and approach national production levels of higher-rank eastern coals. Western coals will be utilized in new power plants as a replacement fuel for oil and gas and may be used in advanced technologies such as diesel engines or in direct-fired turbines. Since these applications require low-ash, low-sulfur coals, crushing to fine sizes and significant cleaning to remove minerals and sulfur will be required. Coal cleaning traditionally has been associated with reducing pyrite and other mineral matter from high-rank eastern coals. To date, insignificant quantities of western coals have been cleaned before utilization and limited data on their washability characteristics exist. Because of this lack of data, it is difficult to predict how these coals will react to standard washing techniques.

"Nippon Mining & Metals' Hitachi Refinery refines 40% of the anodes produced at its Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery. Its current annual production stands at 180,000tons.The refinery always endeavors to increase productivity. One of the outcomes of its efforts is an originally developed automatic short-circuit detector used to inspect short-circuits between anode and cathode. The detector is designed to inspect the 56 pairs of anode and cathode in a cell by fluxgate sensors at once. It inspects 564 cells, automatically and un-manned, and gathers data to be put into a computer. The development of the detector led to a reduction of man-power and achieved a detection accuracy superior to that of a hand-held gauss-meter. In addition, statistical and historical processing of the data enabled early detection and early recovery of the cells with poor efficiency.The new system also contributed to raising the refining capacity and reducing the unit steam consumption, because it is possible to inspect even the cells covered with thermal insulation sheets.IntroductionInspection of cells is an important component of the operation management of a tank-house. At the Hitachi Plant, it used to be carried out by two workers who walked on and checked all the cells of its tank-house once a day to find out any short-circuits in the cells, using hand-held gauss-meters. They inspected about 33 thousand pairs of cathodes and anodes a day and removed nodules by hammers. This method had following problems:it needed much manpower.the walk on the cells sometimes deranged electrodes positions.there was radiation-loss connected with the inspection due tothe fact that the workers were obliged to uncover thermal insulation sheets on the cells while inspecting."

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations, to assess the uncertainty of minable reserves at the project?s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ?correct? (or ?accurate?) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc ?uncertainty model? provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered and the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme. The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open and underground mine in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more ?traditional? resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit.

"The Bureau of Mines and the State of Colorado are cooperating in an investigation of the oil shales of Colorado. in this report the yields and the results of analyses of the oil and, gas produced from a number of oil-shale samples from the principal deposits of Colorado and other oil-shale States, are compared with samples from Scotland and Australia, where the oil-shale industry has had its greatest commercial development, and also with a sample from Brazil *here extensive oil-shale deposits are found shale samples were not selected as being representative of the different deposits, but they illustrate the wide variation in the nature of the organic matter of different oil shales.A further study is being made of the chemical composition of the shale, distribution of nitrogen and sulphur. in the products, temperatures at which organic matter decomposes, and the results will be presented in subsequent Papers, With complete data available on the chemical composition of the shales, it may be possible to explain some of the differences in the nature of the products from the various shales,Most of the work described herein was done under the supervision of M. The gold wire bonding technology is widely used for electrically connecting aluminum pads on IC devices to external terminal of semiconductor. In 1960?s, the tensile strength of gold bonding wire was about 100 MPa only. However, recently the wire with 300 MPa in strength has been developed. Since the gold bonding wire was started to use for IC package in early 1960?, the many types of gold bonding wire has been developing continuously in order to meet market?s needs, such as high density, small size and thin type of IC packages. Moreover, electronic equipments were used in automobile applications and also demanded good reliability under severe temperature environment. Thus Au-Pd alloy wire has been introduced instead of the wire with 4N(99.99wt%) purity gold to provide excellent reliability in Au-Al bond interface. The phenomena at Au-Al interface in the high temperature storage have been already explained by several studies as follows. There are five phases of inter metallic compound (IMC) between gold and aluminum. Just after bond gold ball on aluminum pad, Au5Al2 phase was formed and occupied almost all of IMC area. During high temperature storage test, Au5Al2 phase transformed to Au4Al phase, then this phase was corroded by Bromide (Br) ion that was isolated from molding resin. Thus the reliability between Au and Al degraded. In case of Au-Pd alloy wire, the concentrated palladium phase (Au-Pd-Al) was formed at the interface between Au alloy ball and Al pad. The Au-Pd-Al phase prevented from transforming between Au and Al, therefore Au5Al2 phase was hard to transform to Au4Al phase. Consequently the reliability at the interface between Au alloy ball and Al pad was less degradation. However, in recent study using several advanced analysis technique, Au4Al phase was found at the interface between Au alloy ball and Al pad same as the case of conventional gold wire (4N purity gold bonding wire). It was suggested that the formation of concentrated palladium phase (Au-Pd-Al) related the excellent reliability at ball bonding process.

The potassium demand for agriculture purposes has increased in Brazil, which has great deficit of internal demands. Potassium-rich rocks have been used as fertilizers as technological alternatives for agriculture aimed to reduce the amount of chemicals and the sector dependence for such products. Vermiculite tailings from União Brasileira de Mineração - UBM, at Santa Luzia - PB, was studied aiming their application in agriculture by potassium release. The sample was analyzed by XRF and XRD; studies on release kinetic with particles smaller than 2 mm added of organic acids (citric and oxalic) at 10-2 mol/L concentration; samples were analyzed by XRD after kinetic assays. The work was conducted using a shaker incubator at 300-rpm agitation and time variation to better understand the potassium availability in the ground. Results show the presence of K2O at 3.46% concentration. Citric and oxalic acids increased the release speed to almost the same level with speed coefficients (k) of 2.61x10-2 h-1/2 and 2.55x10-2 h-1/2 respectively. In statistical terms for both acids, the linear equation represents more than 99.0% of the experimental assays. Stonemeal was applied to banana seedlings in experiment conducted in a greenhouse. The use of vermiculite tailings in banana seedlings promoted potassium absorption, which influenced its growth. The amount of potassium liberated from vermiculite tailings could be used as a long-term alternative to fertilizers in agriculture cultures.

"WorleyParsons has used Discrete Event Simulation methods in conjunction with more traditional process models to assess the performance of copper smelting operations. This work was performed to determine the plant capacities and suitability of proposed debottlenecking options including accounting for the planned and unplanned (breakdowns) shutdowns in the various parts of the plant and supply chain. This paper outlines the methods used along with demonstrating the benefits of selecting a feasible option and minimizing capital and operating costs.IntroductionTraditionally for de bottlenecking studies of smelters and other process plants, a mass balance is performed based on continuous operating rates and expected operating hours. Smelters have several points of failure that will restrict, if not take the entire plant offline. By using a more detailed model, validated against plant experience, bottlenecks can be demonstrated and strategies to remove them to increase plant availability and economic.The modeling simulates the plant performance in real time, and by performing enough simulation the expected long run performance of the plant can be estimated. The models have been built using ExtendSim which is a powerful Discrete Event Simulation software package that is ideally suited to the batch and semi-batch processes and events that occur within smelter operating environments. The value of performing this work is that the operational performance of the plant can be assessed ensuring production targets are met, without using excessive capital outlay."

This report on properties of commercial motor fuels is the twelfth in a series made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.V The -present report, covering the summer of 1941, presents analytical data for 1,857 samples, representing the products of approximately 135 companies. As in previous surveys, these companies include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted, and these data are published exactly as they were received. Conforming to previous surveys, the data cover three groups of samples -- regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines -- and each group has been aver aged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 1,010 samples, 291 items, and 86 brands; premium price, 577 samples, 263 items, and 78 brands; third-grade gasoline, 270 samples 159 items, and 74 brands. The meanings of these terms as used in the surveys are as follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.

In the first report1 disks of steel of known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive charges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was progressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive attained by tamping it, the small lead block, with the steel disk adhering

"The analysis of the mining laws of the different European States reveals big diversities and, often, remarkable complications. This is due, firstly, to the history and culture of different States and, secondly, to the assets of natural resources. It is therefore difficult to find a common line between the text of the various mining laws, but it can be observed that nearly all the States distinguish the mining resources in two categories: the materials whose importance is considered strategic belong to the first category; in the second category the materials whose importance (above all economic) is mainly local are comprised. The paper, analysing in detail the planning procedures in some important Countries, investigates the possible perspectives of arranging some guide-lines for a correct approach to the sustainable exploitation planning/programming of mineral resources (with particular reference to "quarry" materials, such as aggregates), considering both the environment protection and the production needs."
