"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

The advance of science and technology influences the modern economy in countless ways. Older industries must adapt to changes in the marketplace, while new industries are born by applying new technology to meet consumer needs. In light of declining head grades and increased unit costs in the US minerals industry, new technological developments in the production environment are paramount to maintaining a competitive footing in the international marketplace. Micro-engineering research provides the transition between the knowledge base and the application of new technology on the production level. Economic considerations The primary goal of technical development in the production environment is to reduce unit operating costs. Simply stated, this is accomplished by improving operating efficiencies and productivities on the production level. The goal of micro-engineering research in the production environment is to evaluate promising technologies and develop the criteria necessary to apply them in operations. As such, this process is the first step toward innovation and discovery. Generally, the micro-engineering research is followed by macro-engineering development. In the production environment, there are generally more development projects than can be accomplished in a timely manner. Usually, this is the result of financial and human resource limitations. Consequently, it is necessary to prioritize the work such that the most beneficial projects are accomplished first. By performing a discounted cash flow analysis and using benefit-cost ratios (for non-mutually exclusive alter¬natives) or net present value criteria (for mutually exclusive alternatives), the projects can be rated from best to worst. In this way, the financial and human resources can be best allocated to first complete those projects giving the highest returns before moving on to other activities. Moreover, this information is a prerequisite for management to justify additional financial or human resources.

Operating mine haulage trucks near the crest of stockpiles and waste dumps is a potentially hazardous practice often resulting in a localized slope failure and a dump point accident. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a computer code (INSLOPE3) based on the kinematic method of limit analysis which determines an admissible truck weight (upper bound value) for varying distances from the slope edge. The program considers the material strength parameters, slope geometry, and inertial forces induced by vehicle braking. The program can be utilized to assist in the determination of safe operating distances for a haulage truck from a slope edge, the development of safe vehicle operating procedures, and the admissible weight for a static concentrated loading near the crest of an otherwise stable slope. This report provides information on the use of INSLOPE3, interpretation of the results for mining applications, and instructions for acquiring a copy of the software.

The Upper Reach segment of the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) is a3.2-km-long tunnel excavated in interbedded marine sedimentary deposits with approximately 40 m of cover. The tunnel was initially classified by Cal/OSHA as “potentially gassy.” During excavation, high levels of hydrogen sulfide and methane were encountered, prompting Cal/OSHA to reclassify the tunnel as “gassy.” In addition, the tunnel excavation encountered an abandoned, 100-year-old water tunnel known as the “Narrows Gallery.” This existing tunnel was completely full of water and under 30 m of hydrostatic head. This paper will discuss the unanticipated difficulties and design solutions implemented to construct a gassy tunnel exposed to high volumes of water.

The Gramalote orebody is a large low-grade gold deposit situated in the San Roque municipality, 124 km north-east of Medellin in Antioquia, Colombia. It is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and B2Gold and is currently in Feasibility Study phase. In 2013 AGA requested CRCORE to undertake a preliminary study of the potential application at Gramalote of pre-concentration by screening, part of the Grade Engineering suite. 160 samples of coarse assay rejects (-3 mm) were tested and showed one of the strongest responses seen worldwide to that time, suggesting that about 70% of the gold could be recovered into 40% of the mass. This was seen as potentially markedly improving the Gramalote economics. A large-scale testing program was implemented on site to follow up these results. A total of 18 samples of 17 t each were mined along a pre-existing exploration adit. A complex test flowsheet allowed size fractions to be generated from the as-received material as well as after crushing to 53, 23 and 3 mm, all from the same head sample. The procedures were designed after carrying out a heterogeneity study to measure sampling errors. The coarser size fractions were designed to study the effect of crushing on upgrade response and predict the response on open-pit run-of-mine ore. The finer size fractions were designed to investigate means of predicting the upgrade response across the orebody. The large-scale testing closely confirmed the average upgrade response as predicted from drill core assay rejects but found that only the -53 mm crushed material accurately predicted the upgrade response of individual samples. Ore geochemistry was able to usefully distinguish samples with good and poor response. A small study on drill core suggested that, for Gramalote, fine crushed material distinguishes vein associated and disseminated values but not other factors that control actual outcomes.

"Heavy metals contamination in aqueous systems can be found in a variety of industries, in particularly mining, metal processing, finishing and plating. Water containing more than 0.5 ppm heavy metal considered as a toxic due to harmful effects on health. The major techniques employed for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewaters include precipitation, reduction, ion-exchange, and adsorption. Adsorption is a heavy metal removal method for aqueous systems. As a common adsorbent, activated carbon has been used in treatment but it is ineffective on some elements. Thus, there has been a research for developing highly effective and selective adsorbents. In this study the adsorption of lead and arsenic ions on to coal waste and red mud waste was studied. The experimental parameters were determined as pH, equilibrium time and the initial concentrations, activation by heat treatment and the blend of adsorbents. According to their adsorption capabilities, red mud was found to adsorb lead and arsenic ion with high efficiency but coal waste did not adsorb arsenic ion. However the binary adsorptions of these ions were enhanced the adsorption efficiencies. In addition the blend of coal waste and red mud affected the adsorption efficiency. INTRODUCTION As a result of rapidly developing industry and excessive use of water resources, the need of clean water and wastewater management appear as a problem. Wastewater recycling activities and researches come to the fore for an effective use of wastewater. Recycling of wastewater, which contains heavy metals harmful to the environment and human, is a difficult process. Heavy metals are generally divided into three categories: toxic metals, precious metals, radionuclides. Wastewaters from various industries, containing heavy metals, are the main polluters of water and soil. Although their toxic structures, heavy metals are used extensively in industry as they have technological significance. Usually mining industry, metal industry and industrial organizations produce heavy metal containing wastewaters (Volesky 1990, Ting and Lawson 1991, Bishop 2002)."

Theoretical substantiation of leaching of clustered ultra-fine gold by the electro-photo activated cyanide and chloride solutions is given in the paper; and processes of activation of leach solution by electrolysis and photo-activation are described. Comparative experiments on electro-photo activated leaching of ultra-fine gold from refractory ores by cyanide and chloride solutions were carried out. The material for research is primary ore of the Pogromnoe deposit (Russian Federation, Trans-Baikal Territory). The ore is characterised by the minimum sulfide minerals and the organic carbon content. Gold in ores of this deposit is presented as mainly ultra-fine. Gold inclusions in quartz and silica-alumina minerals (metasomatic minerals) are ultra-fine. Sulfide minerals (2.5-3%) are presented in ore generally by pyrrhotine (gold content does not exceed 10 g/t). Standard cyanide technology provides 49.5% gold recovery. Photo-electro activated air saturated NaCN provides 69.9% gold recovery. Laboratory research of chloride-hypochlorite column leaching demonstrated that the electro-photo activated method provided 78.9 % gold recovery to pregnant leach solution. Chloride-hypochlorite photo-electro activated solution can provide higher level of gold recovery with shorter process duration (10 days) in comparison with cyanide (40 days). The final decision regarding the choice of leach solution has to be done on the basis of technical and economic calculations. "In unfavorable strata conditions, it is often necessary to install additional long tendon support as part of a primary support cycle. Although these support systems provide the required additional stability to the roadway installation does have a significant effect on the rate of development. To overcome the slow cure time of Portland cement-type grouts, the use of two component resin systems, such as polyurethanes and urea silicates, have become favorable. However, concerns over low modulus and creep properties has led to the development of a two-component grouting medium that displays the properties of traditional cable grouting materials with the rapid reaction times of pumpable resin systems. This paper describes product testing, application, surface trials, underground trials, and full-scale applications of the Tekthix System in a dynamic underground environment. INTRODUCTION Single-component cement grouts have been used to anchor long tendon supports for many years. They range from high- to low-slump Portland cement and can be slow-setting to fast-setting grouts. However, current cement grouting systems, which includes the grout and equipment, have some disadvantages: 1. Low-slump grouts require pumps that can handle a thick, high-viscosity grout, so choice of pumps is limited. 2. Pumping distance is limited with current cable bolt grout pumps; operators often tend to add water to allow pumping long distance, which adversely impacts the quality and strength of the material. 3. Fast-setting grouts tend to cause issues with pump and line blockages due to the reduced working life of these single-component materials."

Leach dumps in Butte are relatively new in comparison with older established dumps in other areas throughout the West. With the exception of one 10 million ton dump, all dumps have been formed on a prepared base. This is necessary because the entire leach dump area overlies an alluvial fill which varies in depth from 100 to 400 feet and through which solution would be lost. Preparation of the leach pad consists of first removing all vegetative material and compacting the exposed surface with rollers. This surface is covered with a 4" layer of minus 1" crushed rock which in turn is roller compacted. A 3" compacted layer of asphalt hot mix is then applied to the crushed rock surface. Final sealing is effected by a 1/4'? coating of catalytically applied hot asphalt. Dump leaching was inaugurated in 1964. First solution applied was wholly made up of mine water pumped to surface through a central pump shaft. Sulfuric acid was added on surface at a surge pond to control pH of the leach solution. Acid addition is necessary not only to benefit the leach dumps, but to prevent the formation of ocher scale within the pipe line distribution system. Mine water pH is on the order of 2.8. The combination of ferrous and ferric iron as well as magnesium and aluminum salts is such that ocher forms at a pH of 2.38. It is therefore mandatory to control pH at 2.0. Dump effluent pH is held at 2.3 or less.

As fluids move through a wellbore, there is transfer of heat between fluids and the earth due to the diflerence between fluid and geothermal temperatures. This type of heat transmission is involved in drilling and in all producing operations. In certain cases, quantitative knowledge of wellbore heat transmission is very important. This paper presents an approximate solution to the wellbore heat-transmission problem involved in injection of hot or cold fluids. The solution permits estimation of the temperature of fluids, tubing and casing as a function of depth and time. The result is expressed in simple algebraic form suitable for slide-rule calculation. The solution assumes that heat transfer in the wellbore is steady-state, while heat transfer to the earth will be unsteady radial conduction. Allowance is made for heat resistances in the wellbore. The method used may be applied to derivation of other heat problems such as flow through multiple strings in a wellbore. Comparisons of computed and field results are presented to establish the usefulness of the solution. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, considerable interest has been generated in hot-fluid-injection oil-recovery methods. These methods depend upon application of heat to a reservoir by means of a heat-transfer medium heated at the surface. Clearly, heat losses between the surface and the injection interval could be extremely important to this process. Not quite so obvious is the fact that every injection and production operation is accompanied by transmission of heal between wellbore fluids and the earth. Previously, the interpretation of temperature logs',' has been the main purpose of wellbore heat studies. The only papers dealing specifically with long-time injection operations are those of Moss and White3 and Lesem, et al.' The purpose of the present study is to investigate wellbore heat transmission to provide engineering methods useful in both production and injection operations, and basic techniques useful in all wellbore heat-transmission problems. The approach is similar to that of Moss and White:' DEVELOPMENT The transient heat-transmission problem under consideration is as follows. Let us consider the injection of a fluid down the tubing in a well which is cased to the top of the injection interval. Assuming fluid is injected at known rates and surface temperatures, determine the temperature of the injected fluid as a function of depth anti time. Consideration of the heat transferred from the injected fluid to the formation leads to the following equations. For liquid, Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 are developed in the Appendix. These equations were developed under the assumption that physical and thermal properties of the earth and wellbore fluids do not vary with temperature, that heat will transfer radially in the earth and that heat transmission in the wellbore is rapid compared to heat flow in the formation and. thus, can be represented by steady-state solutions. Special cases of this development have been presented by Nowakl and Moss and White.3 Both references are recommended for excellent background material. Nowak' presents very useful information concerning the effect of a shut-in period on subsequent temperatures. Since one purpose of this paper is to present methods which may be used to derive approximate solutions for heat-transmission problems associated to those specifically considered here, a brief discussion of associated heat problems is also presented in the Appendix. Analysis of the derivation presented in the Appendix will indicate that many terms can be re-defined to modify the solution for application to other problems. Before Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 can be used, it is necessary to consider the significance of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient U and the time function f(t). Thorough discussions of the concept of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient may be found in many references on heat transmission. See McAdams5 or Jakob," for example. Briefly, the over-all coefficient U considers the net- resistance to heat flow offered by fluid inside the tubing, the tubing wall, fluids or solids in the annulus, and the casing wall. The effect of radiant heat transfer from the tubing to the casing and resistance to heat flow caused by scale or wax on the tubing or casing may also be included in the over-all coefficient. According to McAdams, on page 136 of Ref. 5>

This paper will focus on three aspects of this technical program: Reducing the cost of resource expansion through smart use of low cost, surface target generation techniques; Improving the rate of uranium leaching and solution stability (gypsum, jarosite) through lixiviant chemistry modifications; and Development of an ion exchange (IX) process to increase production capacity, and integration of IX and the current solvent extraction circuit with the existing uranium precipitation and product preparation circuits.

India?s interest in the resources of the deep seabed particularly the manganese nodules in the Indian Ocean can be traced back to the Indian Ocean Expedition of 1960 ? 65. The collection of Manganese Nodule samples from the Indian Ocean in January 1981 aroused considerable interest within the scientific community. Following several surveying expeditions, the Central Indian Ocean was identified as the most promising area for exploitation. India was accorded ?Pioneer Investor? status and further research and development programs were launched to establish the techno-economic viability of deep seabed mining. India has also shown considerable progress in the field of development and testing of methods for processing the nodules. The Department of Ocean Development manages the program.

In view of the current interest in magnetic materials having rectangular hysteresis loops, as for example those obtained with the grain oriented 50 nickel 50 iron alloys,t we wish to call attention again to the results obtainable with the perminvar (Co-Ni-Fe) alloys heat treated in a magnetic field. Data taken from direct current measurements made prior to and during World War II give the typical values shown below for two of the perrninvar alloys. Fig 1 and 2 show- the hysteresis loops for these samples. The first sample above consisted of small rings punched from 0.014 in. sheet stock. These rings were heat treated at 1000°C for one hour in a hydrogen atmosphere and then cooled with the furnace to 750°C at which point they were subjected to a magnetic field of 15 oersteds maintained during cooling to room telmperature. The molybdenum perminvar sample consisted of a spirally wound core of 0.001 in. tape. The heat treatment was the same except that box annealing methods were used and no hydrogen atmosphere was employed. Even better properties might be expected using hydrogen. The heat treating temperatures and cooling rates are not critical. Rectangular hysteresis loops produced in other perminvar alloys by heat treatment in a magnetic field were described earlier.',? Properties similar to those described above are realized in perminvars manufactured by conventional methods. Drastic cold working which in practice limits the final thickness and is gen- erally expensive may thus be avoided. This information may be of interest to those concerned with magnetic alloys and the development of contact rectifiers, magnetic amplifiers and so on.

In order to render my descriptions more intelligible, I have compiled a general map of this section of Alaska, showing accurately the relative positions of the most important districts where valuable deposits of minerals have been discovered (page 819). Upon inspection of this map, it will be observed that the chief metalliferous belt in this mineral field is in close proximity to the mainland shore, the trend of which it follows for more than a hundred miles in a northwest and southeast course, while the mineral croppings on the adjoining islands are much shorter in extent, and more irregular with respect to their strike and continuity. This principal metalliferous zone, which I will call the main-land system of lodes, contains gold, silver and lead, besides traces of copper, zinc and iron, gold being found extensively in a free state and also associated with sulphur, and with many of the sulphides of iron, lead and other substances. On the line of this belt, as shown on the map, there are a number of distinct mineral districts. Beginning at the southerly extremity, they are named as follows: Sumdum, Snettishham, Grindstone Creek, Sheep Creek, Gold Creek, Lemon Creek, Montana Creek and Berners Bay districts, each deriving its name from the hay or creek on which it is situated. Harris mining district, as legally organized under the local customs, rules and regulations adopted by the miners of Juneau, embraces, within its exterior boundaries, Grindstone, Sheep, Gold and Lemon Creeks, and all of Douglas Island. The limits of this immense metalliferous horizon are becoming definitely known through the exposures made by prospectors. The belt, as now recognized, varies in width from one to several miles, the lateral measurement being greatest at Juneau in Harris district, where the famous Treadwell mine, with its slate foot-wall, marks the westerly boundary of the zone, while the eastern side of Silver Bow Basin, with a granite hanging-wall, defines its easterly border.

"Geological factors and mine design contribute to mining-induced seismic activity, and this is especially true in longwall mining. Massive rock units are a key cause of seismic activity due to catastrophic failures that release large amounts of energy. Other factors, such as overburden depth, panel design, pillar design, rock strength, and proximity of the massive rock unit to the coal seam, all have a role in the potential and size of a seismic event. A recent seismic event was recorded by a deep longwall mine in Virginia at 3.7ML on the local magnitude scale and 3.4 MMS by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in July 2016, which had no impact on the mining operations. Further investigations by NIOSH and Coronado Coal researchers have shown that this event was associated with geological features that have also been associated with other, similar seismic events in Virginia. Detailed mapping and geological exploration in the mining area has made it possible to forecast possible locations for future seismic activity. In order to use the geology as a forecaster of mining-induced seismic events and the energy potential, two primary components are needed. The first component is a long history of recorded seismic events with accurately plotted locations. The second component is a high density of geologic data within the mining area. In this case, 181 events of 1.0ML or greater were recorded by the mine’s seismic network between January, 2009, and October, 2016. Within the mining area, 897 geophysical logs were analyzed from gas wells, 224 core holes were drilled and logged, and 1,031 fiberscope holes were examined by mine geologists. From this information, it was found that overburden thickness, sandstone thickness, and sandstone quality contributed greatly to seismic locations. After analyzing the data, a pattern became apparent indicating that the majority of seismic events occurred under specific conditions. Three maps were created using MineScape geological mapping software. MineScape deploys an interpolator known as FEM (finite element method) and is based on a series of gridded triangles to forecast the probability and magnitude of an event if a particular panel were to be mined. The forecast maps have shown accuracy of within 74%–89% when compared to the recorded 181 events that were 1.0 ML or greater when considering three major geological criteria of overburden thickness of 1900 feet or greater, 20 to 40 feet of sandstone within 50 feet of the Pocahontas number 3 seam, and a longwall caving height of 15 feet or less."

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. It is common to use the gradation in collecting power of homologous series of xanthates, as well as the more specific effects of activators and depressants, to achieve the separation of sulphides.The original aim of the work was to ascertain whether sodium salts of fatty acids (anionic) and fatty amine aceta:tes (cationic) could be selected from a homologous series to achieve better selectivity in separation of nonsulphide minerals by flotation. MEASUREMENT of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (I) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quantitative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carnotite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement.
