THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.' , Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. Powerful, yet inexpensive, personal computers running Windows-95 operating systems provide powerful mine-wide monitoring capabilities when properly engineered. Long awaited conductivity over LAN, phone and Internet links provide new dimensions for sharing information throughout an operator's organization, in- deed around the world. On-line data analysis, archival data storage and historical trend viewing generate shared inputs to production, safety and maintenance personnel. Five years in development, Rel-Tek's new EZ-Trol/W-DX system was engineered around the pilfalls of a Windows environment. It now offers higher speeds, 3D animated graphics and long distance telemetry - all with better reliability than ever before possible. The ubiquitous DDS utility inherent in most Windows was discarded in favor of a lightning fast RAM format. Several ponderous interpretive programs were redesigned into a single compiled entity, thus avoiding the overhead from message conversion, handshaking and transfer. To make the system user friendly, a 'Wizard" utility helps operators set up and reconfigure their systems on site. In-mine data acquisition telemetry was also re- vamped, incorporating a unique noise avoidance scheme, dubbed the "DX" bus - enabling longer distances and higher reliability. 12- bit analog conversion provides the enhanced resolution needed for field scaling auto-cal sensors. By mid '96, eight EZ-TROLMI- DX systems were up and running, several for more than a year. Factory updating and assistance are possible over a phone or Internet link. Our factory testing of components routinely includes actual operation at 2400 BAUD over 14 miles of twisted pair wires.

The Code of Federal Regulations Title 30, Parts 56, 57, 75, and 77 require that detonators and explosives be separated by four inches of hardwood or equivalents when transported together in mines. This standard was developed to protect the explosives from initiation by the more sensitive detonators. The research reported here is an attempt to quantify the fire protection offered by four inches of red oak and other materials. Boxes with a volume of 6.75 cubic feet were made from four-inch thick rough green oak (RGO), two-inch thick RGO plied, two-inch thick #1 common (dried) red oak plied, and a metal/plywood composite. These and boxes meeting the Institute of Makers of Explosives' (IME) Safety Library Publication No. 22 were tested in bonfires. The boxes were instrumented with thermocouples, filled with detonators, and placed over a kerosene fire imparting about 16 kilowatts per square meter heat flux for up to 3 hours.

The cost of mining during the past history of these mines has been excessive, principally by reason of the inefficiency of labor under the wage-system. The amount of labor performed per man was unsatisfactory; and Mr. Edmund B. Kirby, the general manager, decided to adopt the contract-system as a remedy. For this purpose the method now in use was devised by the writer (then and now the superintendent), as best adapted to the local conditions. Francis Drake, Bulawayo, Rhodesia, So. Africa (communication to the Secretary *):—I should like to place on record some data in addition to those given by Mr. Canby in his paper. I regret that my notes have been destroyed so that I can give no accurate measurements of the water jacket that I am about to describe. This furnace mas erected in Cerro Gordo, Inyo county, Cal., early in 1875, and I think it quite possible that it was the first applied in lead smelting. It was made of plate iron and elliptic in shape, the inner dimensions being about 54 by 42 in. by 48 in. high. The distance between the inner and outer plates was about 6 in. Tuyere holes, one at the back and two on each side, about 12 in. in diameter, were made in this, and in these were placed cast-iron water tuyeres about 16 in. long, the diameter of the blast orifice at the point being about 3 in. The height from tuyeres to feed door was about 9 ft., but the top of the charge was kept about 5 ft. above the tuyeres. There was a space of about 12 in. between the jacket and the top brick-work. This brick-work was supported by a cast-iron plate resting on four cast-iron columns. At the beginning, the jacket was lined with air-dried radial bricks, made of crushed quartz and fire-clay, as it was thought that the jacket would not stand the heat on its bare plates. After a short time the practice was altered and no lining mas put in. The jacket was closed at the top and had a steam drum connected by two pipes at the back. This steam drum was connected to the boiler in which the steam was made for driving the Baker blower, the rock breaker and the pumps. The bottom of the jacket mas also connected to the boiler. The jacket was run under boiler pressure (80 Ib.) for some time, but eventually cracks developed in the inner plate between the tuyere holes,

An orientation survey was conducted over a known disseminated copper deposit and a Au-Cu vein deposit and employed geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods. Geochemical techniques proved the most effective and economical means of locating and defining areas underlain by these types of mineralization. Six additional, widely separated occurrences were also investigated and mineralization was confirmed by determination of cold-extractable copper in stream sediments. The length of anomalous drainage varies from several to 16 km and depends on the type and tenor of mineralization. Despite generally marked relief and extreme physical and chemical weathering, cold-extractable copper anomalies in soils appear to reflect closely variations in the ore mineral content of immediately underlying rocks. Threshold values vary with local geological conditions and type and grade of mineralization. Significant thresholds in stream sediments are about 65 ppm and 10 ppm for cold-extractable copper in disseminated and vein copper occurrences respectively. Similar differences are encountered in soils. This necessitates the use of a scale of threshold values at progressive stages in each exploration program. Dis-seminated copper occurrences are presently the major source of mineral production m the Philippines. Much potentially productive ground remains to be investigated and applied geochemistry appears to offer the best available approach. The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Program (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature and involved both orientation and exploration. During approximately six weeks, an orientation survey, involving geological mapping, geophysical surveying and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Santo Nino (Fig. 1). This study demonstrated the economic and technical feasibility of geochemical ptospecting, relative to the other methods tested, for the location and delineation of a typical disseminated copper occurrence characteristic of those that represent the major source of metal in the Philippines.' Geochemical techniques, similar to those tested at Santo Nino, were then applied in a second orientation study of a vein occurrence at Suyoc (Fig. 1). The results of these two orientation studies suggest that, in reconnaissance work in this region, stream sediment analyses, combined with the determination of pH in the same streams, can be used to indicate areas underlain by rock containing anomalous concentrations of copper, whether it occurs in the large tonnage, low grade, disseminated deposits or in the comparatively small tonnage, higher grade, gold vein occurrences. Furthermore, the orientation surveys demonstrate that soil sampling and analysis serve effectively to outline more closely the mineralized zones within the generally anomalous areas identified from the stream reconnaissance. This paper presents the study in situ on stress field of rock mass in a large dam site. By means of two different measure instruments and the method of stress relief, a lot of measure in situ has been done, including stress measurement of three dimensions at ten points and two deep-hole stress measurements in the perpendicular boreholes which are 59.4m and 53m deep seperately, and the basic accordant results corresponding two methods have been got. In the process of the deep-borehole stress measurement we got the stress value in critical state in which cylindrical core would become core-disking in the high stress area, which was first got in the world. The maximum principal stress was up to 650 kg/cm2. The stress value obtained by test and the thickness of rock disks all basically accord to the analysis by mechanical mechanism of core-disking The plane linear elastic finite element analysis has been completed. Results of inverse calculation all ac- cord to the measurement results in four different positions. The whole outline of the stress field of dam site was delineated clearly.

KYANITE, long known to occur in Georgia, did not excite commercial interest until about 1930. Investigations revealed two main types of deposits: (1) separate kyanite crystals embedded in mica schist; and (2) crystal aggregates of kyanite associated with quartz in small and very irregular veins. The second kind at first sight appeared to be the best source of supply. Large boulders or dornicks of kyanite with more or less quartz were found on the surface at many places throughout the Piedmont and Highland sections of the state, but prospecting failed to disclose a sizable vein. These dornicks seem to be a surface accumula-tion from small veins or lens-shaped masses not more than one or two feet thick, and with a horizontal extent of not' more than a few feet. The larger surface accumulation of kyanite dornicks, where not too badly stained by iron oxide, may prove to be marketable, but it is extremely doubtful whether a vein large enough to mine will ever be found. In 1932 deposits of the kyanite-mica schist were known to occur in two places northwest of Clarkesville, in Habersham County. In 1934, at the request of and in cooperation with the Georgia Geological Survey, the United States Geological Survey made a thorough investigation2 of the deposits and found that the two known areas of kyanite-mica schist in Habersham County were but a part of an unsymmetrical, U-shaped belt (Fig. 1) with a western limb extending into Rabun County and somewhat longer than the eastern limb. The total length of the belt is about 30 miles. The width of outcrop ranges from 100 ft. to 1/4 mile or more. Deposits of kyanite-mica schist of very doubtful commercial importance were found in several other counties. Only the deposits of this kyanite-mica schist belt in Habersham and Rabun counties will be discussed in this paper.

Pipelines are used extensively in industry to convey various products. Internal corrosion of pipelines can lead to perforation and leakage of the product. A growing problem, not often accurately recognized, is internal corrosion of pipelines caused by bacteria. Microbiologically-induced corrosion (MIC) refers to corrosion caused by a variety of micro-organisms. This form of corrosion is not widely recognized in many industries, although it is widespread and causes many corrosion problems in pipelines, both internal and external. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are responsible for the bulk of the corrosion problems caused by MIC. Corrosion caused by SRB is found extensively in water pipelines conveying raw, potable and waste water, as well as in pipelines conveying slurries. This problem also occurs in pipelines conveying crude oil. This paper describes internal corrosion problems of slurry pipelines caused by bacteria and outlines mitigation methods to improve slurry pipeline integrity, thereby extending the life of such pipelines.

Seafloor massive sulfides have been a subject of interest for profitable commercial mining these ten years. Because of the higher Au, Ag, and Cu contents, they have received much attention as immediate commercial mining targets by private companies and nations. Some of them already proposed the technologies necessary for the commercial mining. However, the technologies for survey, excavation, lifting, and ore dressing have not yet well been examined from viewpoint of the economy. This Bureau of Mines laboratory research demonstrated that building bricks meeting ASTM specification C62-66 for grades SW and MW of FBS-type bricks can be produced from waste copper mill tailings. Waste tailings from accumulations at Magna, Utah, Anaconda, Mont., and Hayden, Miami, and San Manuel, Ariz., were dry-pressed into bricks, and the products were tested in accordance with ASTM Designation C67-66 on sampling, and testing of brick. An evaluation derived from pilot-plant production of similar brick at the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University indicated the production cost to be about $34 per 1,000 bricks. Utilization of such mill tailings on a commercial scale would eliminate the need for digging new pits for brick raw material production, conserve natural resources, and simultaneously remove potential sources of air pollution.

Aluminum hydride is a covalent, binary hydride that has been known for more than 60 years and is an attractive medium for on-board automotive hydrogen storage, since it contains 10.1 % by wt. hydrogen with a density of 1.48 g/ml. There are at least 7 non-solvated AlH3 phases, namely a, a', a, ?, d, e and ?. The properties of a-AlH3, obtained from the Dow Chemical Co. in 1980, have been previously reported. Here we present a description of the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of freshly prepared a, 0 and y phases of AlH3. In all cases the decomposition kinetics are appreciable below 100" C and all will meet the DOE 2010 gravimetric and volumetric vehicular system targets (6 wt% H2 and 0.045 kg/L). However, further research will be required to develop an efficient and economical process to regenerate AlH3 from the spent A1 powder.

"In this study, the utilization capability of the solid wastes taken from a commercial roof tile and brick factory in Eskisehir of Turkiye has been investigated in the production of stoneware bodies which can be formed by slip casting. At the first stage, X-ray fluorescent (XRF) and X-ray difractometer (XRD) analyses of the wastes were performed. Depending upon the results, a body recipe with an optimum casting concentration was adjusted. The bodies obtained from prepared slips were fired at 1160 oC as glazed and unglazed forms. Then, they were undergone certain tests in order to determine their firing shrinkage values, water absorption levels and optical parameters. To establish what kind of phase formations occurred after firing as a result of waste incorporations into bodies XRD analysis was conducted. Additionally, effects of such a compositional modification on the microstructure of the bodies were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Consequently, it was concluded that fired roof tile and brick wastes could be evaluated in both glazed and unglazed stoneware bodies. Introduction Stoneware is the general name applied to many wares fired between 1150 and 1300 °C. It has a different and denser structure than those of ceramics produced at lower temperatures. Fired stoneware possesses a lower water absorption value. When matured at a high temperature, it gives a possibility for the use of feldspar as a main ingredient [1-2]. Colors of stoneware can be brown, red, white and most of the times beige. Firing usually takes place in oxidation atmosphere but also reduction can be rarely used. This naturally has an effect on the body colors [3]. Earth, which contains clay minerals, becomes plastic mud when mixed with water, has a capability to be easily shaped and can be hardened without cracking if fired at 900-1000 °C, is referred as one of the brick and tile raw materials [4]. Natural and aesthetic appearances of buildings obtained with brick and tile products, which make them preferable especially for construction sector, are of importance. Because clays being main raw material of that type of productions generally do not exist as pure materials in nature, their usability depends on their mineralogy and impurities they contain [5]."

Low-temperature heat capacities of cesium chloride (7° - 300° K) and cesium iodide (13° - 300°K) were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter. The heat-capacity measurements were analyzed graphically to determine smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K.

Many flotation operations need to improve liberation to increase recovery, yet often plant operators are concerned that finer grinding will produce æslimesÆ with low flotation recovery. Yet simple circuits can be designed to give good liberation and excellent fines recovery. The economics of fine grinding has changed fundamentally with new stirred milling processes like the IsaMill. This has also transformed flotation design due to the clean surfaces produced in the inert grinding environment and the narrow size distribution produced by the IsaMill. Past poor experiences with æovergrindingÆ in flotation circuits was often due to the wide size distribution and the degradation of mineral surfaces produced by conventional devices using steel media, like ball mills and tower mills. The correct practice is to design both grinding and flotation together to suit the liberation characteristics of the ore. This may result in several stages of grinding and flotation, recovering mineral as soon as it is liberated, then applying further grinding energy only to those particles that still need liberation. Flotation then occurs in relatively narrow size bands and with minerals with similar liberation characteristics. Though the circuit may look more complex on paper, in reality it is far simpler to operate since each section performs predicably. Circuit design also needs to address materials handling. Finer particles affect froth handling and dewatering, but can still be easily handled by standard products with careful attention to design of launders, pumps and pumpboxes, and de-aeration before thickening and filtering. Excellent examples of designing circuits to include ultrafine grinding include Mt Isa and McArthur River (MRM). In the last decade these operations have produced over ten million tonnes of concentrate with an average grain size below 10 ¦m and above 80 per cent recovery. At Mt Isa, zinc recovery was increased by ten per cent by applying fine grinding to existing poorly liberated streams. In fact, grinding finer in the IsaMill actually improved the recovery of fine particles by ten per cent, and maximum particle flotation recovery occurs for 10 ¦m particles. A more recent example is the flotation of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The use of conventional ball or tower milling to improve liberation is severely limited by the impact of commonly associated chromite on classification, and degradation of flotation performance by the steel grinding environment. The ability of open circuit IsaMills to deliver a narrowly sized ultrafine product with clean mineral surfaces is transforming the design of platinum flotation circuits. The science and practice of fine-grained flotation is now thoroughly proven. The availability of the 2.6 MW IsaMill has made ultra fine grinding a practical tool for flotation plant design. It is expected to become a standard choice for future applications of both fine-grained ores and for minerals with difficult flotation characteristics.

Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

CHARLES H. RICH, Conshohocken, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Wysor has certainly covered his subject in the most thorough and able manner and his paper will no doubt result in enlarged effort toward the conservation of this important byproduct. Not all furnace burdens are as rich in alkalies as those noted by Mr. Wysor. In our own experience we have never gone into any extended examination of the materials entering the furnace burdens, but have made a number of determinations of the water-soluble alkalies of our flue and boiler dust and found maximum of about 4 1/2 per cent. K20-too small for profitable reclamation. We have, however, frequently encountered the smoky gas described by Mr. Wysor. Such gas carries heavy fume, and buds with a fitful flame difficult to maintain. So pronounced was the inhibitory effect of the fume that, in extreme cases, the flame of a lighted match was extinguished by the current of gas and it was found impossible to conduct calorimeter tests without preliminary washing of the gas. When the gas was led through a washer filled with distilled water and pieces of coke, the fume was absorbed and the gas burned without difficulty. Careful analyses conducted on the water solution from the washer showed cyanides in increasing amounts in proportion to the difficulty experienced in burning the gas. We, note Mr. Wysor's statement that he has never found evidence of cyanides in their gas, ascribing the difficulty of burning such gas to the presence of chlorides. Our determinations were conducted in such manner as to preclude possibility of interference by chlorine.

Coke combustion during sintering process is significantly governed by coke breeze size distribution, which in turn affect sinter quality i.e. sinter granulometry, Tumbler index, Reduction Degradation Index and Reducibility Index of sinter. To know the effect of microfines of coke breeze on sintering process parameters, pot sintering tests were conducted and it was found that when microfines are eliminated and optimum coke size (1-3mm) is used yield of sinter increased by more than 7%. Similarly productivity increased by 9%, the strength of sinter i.e. ISO Tumbler Index increased by 2.3% and +10mm sinter size increased by 5.5%. Controlling of microfines during crushing and by improving crushing index will result in improved quality and productivity of sinter with lesser amount of coke breeze. This paper describes that how to optimize solid fuel i.e. coke breeze consumption in sintering process through granulometry control.
