The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Introduction. ONE of the features of oil-field work that puzzles operator, chemist and geologist alike, is variation in the gravity of the petroleum produced, on neighboring leases or even from adjoining wells. Few fields in the United States yield oil that is of uniform gravity throughout; in some, fields the different grades are produced from different sands, in a few from different formations, and in many from different areas in the same sand. In a few cases, perhaps, a common assumption-that the heavier oil is derived from the lighter through the escape of the more volatile constituents-is valid, but many cases can not be explained in this way. Although in the California fields the specific gravity of the oil generally decreases with depth, there are numerous exceptions to this rule; and, as in many other regions the light oil is found nearest the surface, it is evident that evaporation underground is generally an unimportant factor. It is generally recognized that the great differences between petroleum from widely separated fields are due largely to differences in age and degree of metamorphism and to variation in the composition of the original organic matter; but in the writer's opinion some of these broader differences, as well as most of the minor variations in the character of the oil from any one field, are clue to the local action of natural reagents such as sulphur or oxygen. This is particularly likely to be true if the oil has migrated from one formation to another, as in the California fields; and in some areas it appears that variation in sulphur content may even afford a rough index of the extent or distance of the migration. It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to the chemical action of sulphur and oxygen on petroleum, to show that the gravity of the oil from any one field is intimately related to its sulphur content, and to discuss the possi-

A molecular modeling study was carried out on an adsorbed oleate monolayer on the surfaces of three calcium minerals, fluorite, calcite and fluorapatite using Universal Force Field (UFF) potentials. The cleavage plane of calcite {104} was the best template for oleate monolayer adsorbed since the surface structure enabled all the calcium sites available on the surface to be occupied by oleate anions. The area occupied per chain of oleate in this well packed monolayer was computed to be 20.2 Å, which exactly matches the value calculated to be the parking area per oleate molecule for a fully packed monolayer based on strictly geometric calculations. On the other hand, the precentage of calcium sites occupied by oleate to achieve a fully packed monolayer in case of fluroite and and fluorapatite was found to be 67% and 75% respectively. The results of this theoretical study suggest that while all the three adsorption conformations, that is unidentate, bidentate and bridging type are equally likely on fluorite and fluorapatite, bridging is most likely on calcite. Interestingly, all the conformations are observed experimentally for calcite-oleate system also. The reasons for this discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and experimental observations are not clear. More work is required to resolve this discrepancy, in particular simulation studies in presence of solvent water molecules on the surface.

Robert E. Hagen (Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp.)—Mr. Stowasser and his associates are to be congratulated on their achievements in developing the design of a pilot agglomerating plant, based on information obtained from experiments made in a laboratory sinter pot, and subsequently constructing and successfully operating this plant. In his Transactions article, May 1955 (vol. 201) Mr. Stowasser stated that the output of his heat treating strand was about 2 Lt per sq ft of grate area per day and that the fuel consumption was 0.7 to 0.8 million Btu per Lt of product. If it is assumed that the burning zone extends from the back of the ignition furnace to the beginning of the recuperation windbox, only about 1/3 of the grate area over the windboxes is utilized for burning pellets, and the actual rate at which partially dried pellets are burned is about 6 Lt per sq ft of grate area per day. It may be interesting to compare the above operating data with that obtained at the Extaca plant, where taconite concentrate is treated on a conventional sin- tering machine using limestone or hydrated lime additives with no recuperation of heat. The entire windbox area is used for burning, and a production rate of 2.5 Lt per sq ft of windbox area per day has been attained at a fuel consumption of 1.8 to 2.0 million Btu per Lt of product, the latter being considerably in excess of that reported by Mr. Stowasser, partly because a circulating load of returns amounting to 28 to 30 pct of the machine feed is used and because no attempt is made to recuperate heat from the waste gases. With the high capital and labor costs prevailing today, it seems that future development of the downdraft grate pelletizing process should be directed toward taking advantage of the high burning rate of predried pellets and increasing capacity, perhaps at the expense of fuel economy, by decreasing the proportion of grate area utilized by ancillary functions. For example, eliminating the cooling zone and using this area for burning would increase the proportion of grate area available for burning from 33 to 50 pct of the total windbox area, and a proportionate increase in capacity would result.

The data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. Dragline vs. Bucket-line Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 106 gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new 7-cu. ft, bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and in operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ Per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These Percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind- The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft- (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. Yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10 gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costin 4¢ Per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ Per cu. yd. This study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metal-lographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. Material Used The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. Under normal circumstances, methane released along a longwall face represents only 10%-20% of the total me- thane emitted from the entire longwall panel. However, there might be a sudden surge of methane at the face which may cause a potential problem because the friction from shearer cutting, support movement, and scraper conveyor dragging can be ready ignition sources. Therefore, to predict the distribution of methane will be critical to prevent possible explosions. In this paper, methane dispersion patterns along a lognwall face are simulated under normal and abnormal conditions. With the simulation of methane released from the face, around shearer drum, and from the broken coal on the conveyor, places with possible high methane content can be identified by different phases of working process and shearer positions. Local ventilation measures are evaluated so precautionary measures can be planned ahead.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are indispensable components in the manufacturing of high-tech devices, renewable energy technologies, and defence applications. As global demand for these elements continues to rise, there is a pressing need to optimize extraction processes for both efficiency and environmental sustainability. This study explores approaches to rare earth extraction using Ionquest® 801 and integrates a predictive modelling to enhance process understanding and optimization. We conducted a screening test varying pH process to evaluate the best extraction efficiency. Starting pregnant leach solution (PLS), solution was prepared in the lab with the following rare earth elements: La, Ce, Gd, Dy, and Υ, at 0.02 M for each element. The data obtained were used to develop empirical and mechanistic models to predict rare earth extraction yields and flowsheet. Further tests were performed by mixing specific concentrations of different extractant and/or phase modifier. Our experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposedextraction methods, highlighting improvements in both yield and selectivity. The developedmodels successfully captured the complex relationships between process parameters and extraction efficiency, providing valuable insights for process optimization.

This paper is concerned with mineral policy in Ireland and how it might be improved to encourage more exploration and investment in mining in the country. The approach is to first outline the main desirable characteristics of a comprehensive national mineral policy document. This aspirational document is then used to assess the current regulatory, legislative and fiscal frameworks for mining in Ireland. The analysis also contains a brief account of the history, structure and characteristics of the mining industry in Ireland. The main focus of the paper is to identify those aspects of the existing framework that erode Ireland’s attractiveness to mineral investment and to suggest policy improvements.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

One of the more widespread experimental procedures currently used in experimental rock and soil mechanics work involves the use of a short circular cylinder loaded axially between nonrigid end plates1-5 (Fig. 1a and b). It is widely recognized 6 that a number of undesirable features are connected with this test procedure ; the most noteworthy of these is the development of a nonuniform stress distribution throughout the specimen resulting from an elastic mismatch between the specimen and the end plates. In general, the end plates and specimen possess different elastic properties. As a result of this elastic mismatch, the uniform distribution of stress and strain applied to the end plates is altered at the interface, the degree of which is dependent not only on the magnitude of the elastic mismatch but also on whether there is any relative movement between the specimen and the end plate. A convenient measure of the elastic mismatch is the ratio (vp/Ep) / (v8/E3), where v and E are Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus and the subscripts s and p refer to the specimen and end plate, respectively. For most tests that use steel end plates, (v8/E8) is greater than (vp/Ep) ; i.e., the specimen tends to expand or contract laterally more than the end plates. Because of the frictional restraint offered by the end plates, shearing stresses are developed at the interface that, for compression testing, act inward producing a "clamping" effect (Fig. lc). The effect of this "clamping" is to produce a state of triaxial stress throughout the specimen. Fig. Id illustrates the coordinate system and stress nomenclature used. GOLD was discovered previous to the year 1900 on the east shore of Emerald lake, Afton township, Timagami Forest Reserve. It was found in a small cavern in banded iron formation, close to the water's edge. This occurrence of gold was mentioned in several reports that referred briefly to this area, and prospectors evinced considerable interest in the region. It was not, however, until the Golden Rose Mining Company, which was incorporated in 1909, started operations that much work was done on the property. In 1915-16, this Company, under the direction of E. J. Townsend, the President, did a considerable amount of work. A small mill was built and ore was extracted from pits, trenches, and a one~ hundred-foot shaft. In 1927, Afton Mines, Limited, was incorporated to take over the property, and about thirty men were employed for a time. During 1934, the New Golden Rose Mining Company was organized to handle the property, and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, undertook to develop the mine. In March of the following year, this Company began deepening the shaft from 100 feet to 500 feet. A considerable amount of drilling had previously been done on the hill of iron formation in which the mine is located. Further drilling was done from the surface, and altogether about twelve holes have been put down to test the formations. Over 2,000 feet of drilling has also been done from the underground workings. The mine is now known officially as the New Golden Rose mine, although to many it is better known as the Afton. To reach the property during the summer months, there is a boat trip of about thirty miles from Timagami, a wagon-road portage of one mile to Obabika lake, a boat trip of ten miles on this lake, and finally a wagon-road portage of one and one-quarter miles to Emerald lake. The mine lies about three-quarters of a mile down the east shore of the lake. A 75 h.p. Diesel engine and compressor were taken in over this' route last summer, and it is evident that the transportation problem is quite a serious one. Airplanes have been much in use, and a winter road runs from the mine to Chudleigh, on the .Canadian National railway near Sudbury.

Mount Gibson Iron Limited (æMount Gibson IronÆ) has made the difficult transition from a privately owned company with an iron resource to a publicly listed company owning and operating a profitable iron ore mine in the mid-west of Western Australia. The development of the company is described with particular emphasis on the Tallering Peak operations, resources, associated infrastructure and logistical arrangements; the Mt Gibson hematite and magnetite resources and the proposals to develop the magnetite resource as part of an integrated project through to iron pellet production. The concept of tailoring the relatively small ship capacity of the outturn port of Geraldton to appropriately sized inturn ports in China to allow direct delivery of product is discussed. The companyÆs philosophy of building shareholder value by progressive development of its relatively modest resources (compared with the Pilbara) is discussed. In pursuit of long-term business success Mount Gibson Iron has formed symbiotic relationships with strong business partners whose aims and objectives mirror or complement those of Mount Gibson Iron.

"Falconbridge Limited is presently developing flowsheet alternatives for implementation at the Strathcona Mill. The main thrust for change arises from the need to reject more pyrrhotite from the concentrate. To maintain appropriate levels of sulphur in the smelter concentrate, however, enhanced removal of non-sulphide gangue minerals must be realized. This could best be done in the Non-magnetics flotation circuit.Laboratory investigations were followed by an on-stream pilot test at Strathcona. The application of a column cleaner on the Non-magnetics concentrate resulted in significantly lower levels of fine gangue at equivalent sulphides recovery.This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot testing and results, with a focus on piloting. Also included is a discussion of the Strathcona Mill Flowsheet and the role of the Nonmagnetics flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Ltd. is currently developing means to reduce atmospheric sulphur dioxide emissions. One alternative is a reduction in the amount of pyrrhotite in Strathcona Mill concentrate, which reports to the smelter. Pyrrhotite in the Falconbridge ores contains an average of 39 percent sulphur and 0.64 percent nickel. By comparison, pentlandite contains an average of 33 percent sulphur and 34 percent nickel.A consequence of the rejection of pyrrhotite is a decrease in the sulphur assay in the remaining concentrate. This decrease causes downstream difficulties in the roasting process. Therefore, the content of non-sulphide gangue in the mill concentrate must also be reduced in order to maintain sulphur grades adequate for roasting. The resulting concentrate will have lower sulphur dioxide emissions while maintaining nickel production."

THE operating advantages of the longwall retreating system of mining, as opposed to longwall advancing, have been well known for many years. Although retreat walls have been successfully worked in the past in some of the collieries of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, Picton and Cumberland areas, the adoption of longwaIl retreating as the general sys-tem of mining has not been attractive in the Sydney field, due to the time and expenditures required to drive roadways to the boundary. In addition. difficulties in maintaining effective ventilation on the faces, especially under conditions of low barometer, have made the operators in the field hesitant to adopt this as the general system of mining. The development of a machine capable of rapid entry drivage has made possible the driving of the necessary road ways to the boundary at a moderate cost, completely changing the picture and making a retreat system more attractive.

AMONG the main interesting developments in the coal market have been the changes that have taken place between the consumer groups. Important signs of these changes began to appear many years ago, but in a modest way, and were apparent only to the few fuel experts making broad statistical determinations. It is doubtful, however, that any of these experts appreciated the significance of their early findings, and perhaps none had the imagination to consider how extensive these changes might be eventually with respect to solid fuels sales and distribution. (Reference here will be principally to bituminous coal.) Railroad Fuel Major changes in coal use did become pronounced after World War II, and it did not take an expert to see what was taking place and how serious the impact was likely to be. First, was the case of the steam and diesel locomotives. The railroads had been considered the best coal customers; they were steady and large purchasers and usually paid a better price than most others. Railroad fuel provided the basic mine realization and it often was the source for operating cash during general market slumps. It was the outlet for 20 pct of the bituminous coal production, as much as 110 million tons in 1946.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the feasibility of partitioning complex sulfide minerals to simpler sulfide phases by sulfidation reactions. Such partitioning can afford opportunity to improve selective extraction of mineral constituents of value. This report describes research involving sulfidation partitioning of byproduct chalcopyrite concentrates from Missouri lead ore processing, and a Utah chalcopyrite concentrate from Cu ore processing. Small chalcopyrite samples were sulfidized with elemental S in glass capsules sealed after evacuating and backfilling with He, by heating for 1 to 24 h at specific temperatures in the range of 250? to 500? C, extending from below to above the boiling point of S (-4450 C).

The year 1935 witnessed one of the world's oldest industries—gold mining—attain the stature of a billion dollar business. Preliminary estimates indicate that somewhat over 30,000,000 oz. of gold was produced, the largest output ever recorded and exceeding the previous year by more than 11 per cent. Of this huge total the Witwatersrand field produced about 10,800,000 oz., compared with 10,480,000 oz. in 1934. Russia was apparently the stellar performer, and from incomplete data it appears that between five and five and a half million ounces were produced by the Soviets compared with 4,200,000 last year and 2,814,000 in 1933. The United States nosed Canada out of third place with a production of 3,546,000 oz. against 2,916,000 in 1934, while Canada increased her total from 2,965,000 to 3,291,000 oz. Similarly, gains of lesser magnitude were made in Australia, the Gold Coast and other countries. As a result of great activity in developing outlying areas on the Rand, and the great number of new companies building mills in Canada, Australia, the Gold Coast and the United States, the years 1936 and 1937 should see new high records, as these new producers will more than offset any decline in the older properties. The whole world has become "gold conscious" during the past three years. It has been the subject of innumerable articles by economists and others, but, unfortunately, because of their lack of actual mining knowledge, they have treated the production of gold as a static affair, ignoring geological and technical factors. It is hardly necessary to draw attention to the fact that the world's gold-mining industry was slowly but steadily shrinking in importance, owing to the gradual depletion of known deposits that were profitable to work at costs existing prior to 1929. High zinc concentration in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking offgas (OG) cleaning system solid wastes is one of the main barriers for recycling of the solid wastes in sintering – blast furnace ironmaking process. One of the possible solutions is to utilize zinc-free scrap in BOF steelmaking so that the BOF OG solid wastes will not be contaminated with zinc and can be recycled through sintering – blast furnace ironmaking. This paper describes a model for helping to decide whether to use zinc-free scrap in a BOF process. A model computing marginal price increment of zinc-free scrap is developed. The marginal price increment is proportional to value change of the BOF OG solid wastes after and before using zinc-free scrap, to ratio of BOF solid waste rate to purchased galvanized scrap rate, and to price of galvanized scrap. Due to the variations of consumption rate of purchased galvanized scrap and home galvanized scrap, iron ore price, landfill cost, and price of purchased galvanized scrap, using zinc-free scrap in a BOF process might be economically feasible for some ironmaking and steelmaking plants or in some particular market circumstances.
