To achieve penetration on the energy market, hydrogen must overcome obstacles in the areas of storage, safety and infrastructure. One of the most important is the onboard storage of hydrogen for transportation applications, where large performance gaps exist between the current state of the technology and user expectations. In order to develop and demonstrate viable hydrogen storage technologies for cars, a set of gravimetric and volumetric system targets have been proposed by the US Department of Energy, based on achieving a driving range of 500 km for a hydrogen powered vehicle. A factor of 2 to 3 improvement in both hydrogen storage capacity and energy density is needed along with several other performance goals. Another key issue is safety. Although some of the safety issues can be arguably assigned to misperceptions, hydrogen has specific properties that have to be addressed, particularly in confined geometries where the risk of hydrogen detonations becomes an issue.

The diameters of sessile drops have been found to increase linearly with time in five reacting binary metal systems. The spreading rates of the drops are markedly dependent on temperature and on prior alloying of the solid with the lower melting point metal, hut are independent of the drop volume, wetting atruosphere , solid-surface roughness, and prior alloying of the drop with the substrate metal. A mechanism has been suggested that relates the linear-spreading rate to lateral diffusion of the liquid-metal atoms into the solid at the drop edge. An Arrhenius- type equation has been derived that describes the temperature dependence 0) the spreading rate, and although the agreement between the actual and the predicted pre-exponen-tial terms is poor that between the activation energies is excellent and the variation in the spreading rate of copper on Ni-Cu alloys produced by different extents of alloying can be predicted with considerable accuracy. CHEMICAL interactions frequently change the wetting behavior of solid-liquid systems causing, for example, "secondary spreading1 of sessile drops beyond the size defined by the surface and interfacial tensions of the unreacted components. The kinetics of the contact-angle decreases associated with this spreading are similar for many systems, but few studies have been made with the objective of determining whether the similarities are a reflection of a common mechanism. Some workers2,3 have assumed the secondary spreading is controlled by changes in the liquid surface and liquid-solid interfacial tensions and hence by the composition of the liquid, and contact-angle changes measured by the vertical-plate technique have been used to follow the course of liquid-solid chemical reactions.4 Other processes that have been invoked to explain these time-dependent changes in specific systems include the removal of adsorbed gas from the liquid-solid interface.5 penetration of containment layers on the solid Surface,6 interdiffusion,1,7 reori-entation of the solid surface into a wettable configuration: vapor-phase transport of the liquid onto the solid in advance of the drop,9 and, from vertical-plate studies. capillary flow between oxide layers and the solid surface.10 One of the reasons for the profuseness of these suggestions may be the complexity of the contact-angle change kinetics. However, in an analysis of secondary spreading gold and copper on UC,11 it was found that the diameter of the contact area between the sessile drop and the solid surface showed a simple linear increase with time although contact-angle changes were more complex. To check whether the linearity was merely fortuitous! additional exploratory work was conducted with four reacting metal-metal systems: Au on Ni. Cu on Ni, Cu on Fe, and Ag on Au. Linear spreading was observed in every case even though the kinetics of the contact-angle changes were complex. A further detailed study of the kinetics of linear spreading of five reacting metal-metal systems has been made with the object of determining the mechanism involved. The influence of variables such as temperature, drop volume. and the initial composition of the drop on the linear-spreading rate has been measured and compared with those predicted by a number of possible mechanisms. The systems employed in this study (Cu and Au on Ni and Pt, and Ag on Au) were selected because of the availability of potentially relevant chemical and physical property data. the simplicity of their phase diagrams at the wetting temperatures, and the ease of experimentation. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The purities of the metals used in the study were: copper, 99.9 pct; gold. 99.96 pct; nickel, 99.2 pct; platinum 99.99 pct; and silver, 99.999 pct. The wetting tests were performed in a split tantalum tube vacuum resistance furnace of a conventional design. The furnace element was held vertically and was 1 $ in. in diam and 6 in, long. Viewing ports were provided in the water-cooled chamber to enable the specimens to be observed in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The temperature in the hot zone of the furnace could be held at 1500" i 5°C for an indefinite time. The surfaces of the solid-plaque metals were ground flat on Microcut paper and both the sessile drop and substrate metals were ultrasonically cleaned in methyl alcohol prior to their insertion in the furnace. After loading, the furnace was pumped down to a pressure of 2 x 10-5 mm of mercury and degassed for 30 min at 900° to 950°C. The temperature was then increased at more than 100°C per min to that used in the wetting test. The vacuum at the wetting temperature was better than 5 x 10-5 mm of mercury. Dewetting and retraction of the drop on cooling did not occur and the contact-area diameters, therefore, were measured after solidification with a vernier traveling microscope. The diameters quoted later are arithmetic means of ten measurements. The standard error of the mean never exceeded 3 pct and was often less than 1 pct.

The Sto Tomas II orebody of Philex Mining Corporation is a porphyry copper deposit located at Padcal, Tuba, Benguet, Philippines. It was mined through open pit method for the first two years starting 1958 and subsequently through underground method using the Block Cave System. The slusher type of draw was employed at the upper levels of the orebody from mid-year of 1959 up to 1994 and then shifted to LHD as the ore became more competent at the lower levels. Application of rock mechanics played a vital role during the conceptualisation of the LHD method of draw, the first of its kind in the Philippines. Rock mechanics is a combined responsibility of the geology and the mine engineering staffs, with the geology providing the vital information to the mine engineering to include in the mine planning the following:the general geology of the orebody; the ground characterisation through rockmass classification; determination of the cavability of the ore column (this includes our experience on airblasts which occurred during the early stage of our last slusher blocks); undercutting sequence; fragmentation of the rockmass in the ore column; drawzone spacing; proper draw control procedure; lay-out of openings; and the design of ground supports based on the rockmass condition. For the proper interpretation of the rockmass that would cater to the diverse mining situations, Philex adopted the modified geomechanics rockmass classification (Mining Rockmass Rating, MRMR) as this system is recognised and used by most of the block cave mine worldwide. This paper aims to discuss and present the role of rock mechanics in the analysis and determination of geomechanical issues encountered in Philex mechanised block cave operation.

One form of encouragement for the small copper mining sector in Chile has been the construction and management of custom mill facilities to process the ore. The paper describes an economic analysis framework for the evaluation of government custom milling opportunities. Feasible mill locations and capacities within a region are selected and the infrastructure and milling costs associated with each combination of location and capacity are assessed. For each combination, the economics of developing and operating known copper deposits in the region is evaluated, and an optimum cut-off grade and mine capacity is selected for the deposits which justify development. Since the total ore supply from mines in the region may exceed a particular custom mill capacity, mine development is scheduled to optimize the economics of the mill facility. Finally, the best custom mill location and capacity is selected on the basis of overall costs and benefits. A copper mining region in northern Chile is used to illustrate the application of the model. A mobile mill approach is examined and compared with the fixed location mill alternatives. Results are analyzed as a function of copper price.

It has been said on many occasions that æthe future of the mining industry of Australia, and indeed the world, lies in the hands of the studentsÆ. As a student, this can be a daunting, yet very exciting, statement. If nothing else, it is a direct challenge to the student body of the mining industry to take responsibility for its direction æafter 2000Æ. However, for the students to embrace this challenge, some responsibility must be borne by the universities and the industry itself to provide some direction and encouragement. Perhaps, therefore, the real challenge is to find the right balance between students, industry and education to best prepare the students for a career in the mining industry. The future industry will demand students who are capable and willing to adapt to change and technology and able to exert the vision and leadership required to ensure the mining industry continues to thrive well into the next century.

A three-dimensional mathematical model of hot blast stove pipe shell has been established and used for analyzing the stress distribution and deformation. The results show that stress concentration happens along the intersection line of hot blast main and the hot blast manifold. There is no plastic deformation on the whole pipe region. The shell near the intersection elongates along the vertical direction and shortens along the horizontal direction, and deforms into an oval. The shell of hot blast main rises up, and inclines upward around the end of hot blast main. The hot blast main moves away from the hot blast and the displacement near the middle region is larger, the main deforms into an arch on horizontal surface. The deformation of shell may form a gap between shell and refractory inside and damage the security and stabilization of hot blast stove piping.

Ore grindability data based on various techniques to measure comminution characteristics are used to evaluate the crushing and grinding efficiency in mineral processing operations. The importance of achieving improved comminution efficiency, in terms of energy consumption, has been emphasized by recent increases in the cost of electricity. From a theoretical standpoint, the objective of a grinding operation might be expressed as maximizing the production rate at a given grind size while minimizing the energy consumption per ton of material ground. To achieve this objective in an industrial operation presents a challenge especially in view of changes in the raw material which are normally encountered. Various procedures1-5 used to determine energy-size parameters and grindability measurements have been reported. The proposed relationships between particle size and energy consumed have much in common between many of the techniques for measuring grindability. Probably the most widely used parameter to measure ore grindability in recent years is the Bond work index6, Wi, which is defined as the kw-hr per ton required to break from infinite size to a product size of 80 percent passing 100 microns. If the breakage characteristics of a material remain constant over all size ranges, then the calculated work index would be expected to remain-constant since it expresses the resistance of material to breakage. However for most naturally occurring raw materials differences exist in the breakage characteristics depending on particle size, which can result in variations in the work index depending on grind size. Consequently work index values are generally obtained for some specified grind size which typifies the comminution operation being designed or evaluated.

The transport mechanisms previously proposed in wustite and hematite have been confirmed by movement of inert markers during the growth of these phases. By similar measurements the mechanism for magnetite has been determined. The rates of growth of multilayer scales on iron, magnetite and hematite on wustite, and hematite on magnetite have been measured. All rates are found to be diffusion controlled under the conditions of the experiments. MANY studies have been made of the rate of oxidation of iron in both the low temperature, film-forming region and the high temperature scaling range. The interpretation of the results has been greatly complicated by the formation of multi-layered scales containing the various phases of iron oxides. In most cases no attempt has been made to determine the composition of the scale and its dependence on time of oxidation in a quantitative manner. However, several recent studies'" have taken this variable into account. It is generally agreed that the growth of thick scales on iron follows a parabolic rate law for the increase of total thickness. In the thin film region agreement has been claimed with parabolic equations of various forms and with logarithmic equations. The discussion here will be concerned only with the formation of scales of considerable thickness, greater than several microns, although some of the conclusions may be applicable to thin films. A brief survey will be given of the solid phases of the iron-oxygen system, the stability of wiistite in bulk and in thin films, the relative densities of iron in the metal and oxides, and the kinetics of forma- tion of oxide scales on iron. New experimental results will be introduced at several points during the discussion, and an attempt will be made to formulate a mechanistic picture consistent with these observations. The experimental techniques are described in an appendix. Iron-Oxygen System Fig. la shows the iron-oxygen phase diagram. Wüstite ("FeO"): The lowest of the oxides has a NaCl type cubic lattice formed by close-packing of the relatively large oxide ions with the smaller iron ions arranged in the interstices. The ionic radius for 0' is about 1.3 A, while Fe++ has a radius of about 0.8A and Fe"' about 0.7A. Its range of existence on the phase diagram is very wide for an ionic material of this type and does not seem to include the stoi-chiometric composition FeO. These deviations appear to be well established as vacancies on iron lattice sites by the comparison of lattice parameters and densities for a series of compositions by Jette and Foote.4 The limits of the field are disputed, but the work which seems most reliable" indicates vacancies in from 5 pct to more than 12 pct of the iron sites. In order for the crystal to be electrically neutral, there must be electron holes which correspond to the formation of trivalent iron ions equal to twice the number of vacancies. Magnetite ("Fe³O4"): Considerable disagreement also exists in the literature about the stable range of the Fe³O4 field. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is using laboratory and computer-based techniques to investigate the post- failure behavior of yielding pillars and pillar reinforcement techniques to control entry deformation. Poorly dimensioned yield pillars, can cause adverse ground conditions. Laboratory studies to evaluate various reinforcement techniques for controlling yield pillar deformation were conducted. A cracking and crushing model is used to evaluate potential tensile and compressive failure planes within pillars of various widths to assess the degree of yielding and stress redistribution. The use of an elasto-plastic model to evaluate the effect of various reinforcement on yield pillars is also discussed. These procedures effectively account for the residual pillar strength, important in yield pillar design.

"In this paper we investigate the consequences of using conventional triaxial peak strength criteria in the polyaxial stress conditions that occur around the end of a long circular underground opening. A series of 3d boundary element analyses were performed using Examine3D to determine the stresses induced around the tunnel in different in-situ stress conditions. To discuss the applicability of a triaxial strength criterion in failure prediction, strength factors were computed for both the Ottosen polyaxial strength criterion and the triaxial Hoek-Brown criterion. Assuming that the Ottosen criterion is an accurate indicator of strength factor, the discrepancy from this value due to the Hoek-Brown criterion is the error in prediction.In order to simultaneously show the error in prediction and actual strength factor, a quantitative bivariate colour scheme is used to visualize the results. This allows rapid identification of regions with large error, and where either unsafe or overly conservative conditions occur. We show how the inappropriate use of triaxial criteria rather than polyaxial criteria leads to an under- or over-estimation of strength factor, and can result in uneconomic or unsafe design. Extending the analysis to different in situ stress regimes shows how the in situ stress conditions affect the assessment."

Though the title may border on the dramatic, it illustrates the real consequences of alternative approaches to property management viewed from my experience in the evaluation, development and implementation of a number of such systems and services in my current position as president of Talco Group Corporation. In the manufacture of gun forgings and other steel parts that, in service, are subject to sudden high stresses and shocks, it is most desirable to use steel possessing the greatest toughness and ductility possible without sacrifice of strength. In order to obtain this condition, it is necessary to procure steel that shows the highest possible elongation and reduction of area without lowering the tensile strength and clastic limit. Proper heat treatment of the steel can control this condition within certain limits. When heat treatment has failed to produce the desired results, metallurgists have used steels containing molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, chromium, tungston, etc. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method by which these desired physical properties may be procured—by the elimination of certain impurities that inherently exist in steel made by the open-hearth process, and without the use of expensive alloys. Design of Gun Forgings In the manufacture of gun forgings, a certain elastic limit is fixed by the designer, and the walls of the gun arc made of the proper thickness, allowing a suitable factor of safety for the high stresses and sudden shocks that occur during gun firing. The clastic strength of the gun is about 1.4 times the stress set up at any point along the bore of the gun during firing with the maximum powder charge. As the stresses set up in the walls of the gun during firing are mostly "tangential," all physical tests are taken in this direction. Due to the length of the forgings, these tangential test bars are always taken at right angles and transverse to the direction of flow of the metal in forging. While tunneling in Europe has been a tradition for centuries, many companies and countries have embraced tunnel innovation with considerable vigor and creativity. Indeed, local needs and site conditions have provided the initiative for improved means, methods, materials and equipment to complete progressively more challenging projects. Many recently completed tunnels have expanded tunneling technology and contributed to the development of highly specialized and productive equipment ? such as the mixed-mode tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) presently in operation at the SOCATOP A- [ ] 86 road tunnel and the high-pressure slurry TBMs for the Westerschelde Tunnel in the Netherlands and Hollandsas near Malmo, Sweden. This paper describes some of the key technologies employed by European tunnel builders and designers including the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), advanced earth pressure-balanced (EPB) machines, pres-sure-faced (slurry) tunneling machines as well as ?hybrid? or mixed-mode TBMs. While these tunneling methods and equipment generally involve significant equipment investment, they may also involve highly trained, experienced and specialized tunneling and support crews as well as materials and tools specifically developed to supplement or complement tunneling performance. For example, mechanized pipe arch placement substantially improves ground support measures and NATM advance and on larger tunnel cross-sections.

Three -dimensional boundary value problems are difficult to solve. Indeed, while the separation of the scalar wave equation can be effected in 11 different coordinate systems, an analytic solution requires that the boundaries, both external and internal, possess the same symmetry as the coordinate system. Numerical methods are thus of great importance for the solution of such problems; however, despite the availability of high-speed, large memory digital computers , the solution to a significant three -dimensional problem is by no means trivial. It is unfortunate that the results reported here by Jones are invalid. Jones discusses a model in which a three-dimensional island lies off a linear coastline where all the interfaces lie in the coordinate planes in a Cartesian system. A downward plane em wave polarized with the electric field parallel to the linear coastline, and two of the islands coast, is incident downward. This, of course, requires that the incident electric field is perpendicular to the other faces of the idealized Cartesian island. The significant equation used by Jones for his finite difference calculations is [ ] where n2 = sµ? . is the conductivity, µ=µo is the permeability of the appropriate medium, and w is the angular frequency of a Fourier component of the incident field. We see that the displacement current term is omitted, which is an excellent approximation for the parameters of interest in this model. In the similar equation for the y- component of the diffusion equation, the same considerations which we are about to discuss are equally valid. It can be seen from the equation that the field components are related and thus any errors introduced will be propagated into all three components. The recovery of rare earth metals from secondary sources has attracted much attention due to their ever expanding demand in the high-tech industry. The studies reported here focus on the hydrometallurgical recovery of lanthanum and cerium from spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts in a two-step process: leaching with nitric acid and solvent extraction by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The experiments show a high dissolution yield of about 93% lanthanum and 42% cerium in a single leaching step with 2 M (126 g/L) HNO3 at 80 °C; only 11% aluminum has been dissolved simultaneously. In the subsequent solvent extraction step the best results for this leach liquor could be achieved using a 1:1 mixture of 25% (v/v) TBP (0.92 M) and 25% (v/v) D2EHPA (0.76 M) in n-decane without the need for any pH adjustment. In that case La(III) and Ce(III) can be extracted with 60% and 74% yield respectively in one stage from the majority of accompanying matrix elements. In particular no extraction of Al(III) could be observed under these conditions.

"This paper shows the possibility of reutilize paper sludge waste as supplementary cementing material for the cement manufacture. This industrial waste consists essentially of a mixture of organic matter (30%) and inorganic compound, such as calcite and clay minerals. The raw paper sludge does not present pozzolanic properties, but once calcined at 650ºC during 2 hours, exhibits high pozzolanic activity, similar to silica fume at 28 days, as a consequence of the transformation of kaolinite into metakaolinite. Calcined paper sludge was used as partial Portland cement replacements of 0, 5, 10 and 20%. Enhancement in compressive strength was appreciably obtained for 10 and 20% substitution levels from 7 days on. Furthermore, calcined paper sludge slightly reduces the initial and final setting times of cement paste. Introduction Natural pozzolanic materials have been ordinary used in different aspects of construction, mainly for their influence on the microstructure and durability of blended cement matrixes [1, 2]. Due to the regulations of environmental protection, many researches are focusing on the possibility of obtaining pozzolanic materials from industrial wastes and not from natural materials (ceramic wastes, silica fume (SF), activated clays) [3–5]. One of the most used pozzolanic products is the metakaolin (MK) obtained from the activation of natural clay (kaolinite). The positive effect that MK has on blended cement performances [6,7] and also the influence that curing temperature and matrix nature have on the reaction kinetics and stability of hydrated phases produced during the pozzolanic reaction, according to the studies carried out by Frías et al. [8,9] are well known. However, there is a worldwide trend towards the use of recycled products in cement industry. In this line, some authors have reported an alternative way of obtaining MK from waste paper sludge [10-14]. The raw paper sludge (PS), once calcined under controlled conditions (700-800ºC), produces a MK with pozzolanic properties [15-20]. The present research is part of an experimental study about alternative source for MK from the Spanish paper recycling industry and its use as supplementary cementing material. This contribution pays special attention to the option of reducing activation temperature below 700ºC. This fact has a positive effect in reducing the energy consumption, as well as in reducing environmental impacts associated with decarbonation of calcite. The chemical and mineralogical characteristics of raw paper sludge and derived calcined product are described. In addition, the influence and behavior on blended cement properties (setting times and mechanical properties) are also discussed."

"In the flotation of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill, Inco Limited, CMC is used as both a floatable rock depressant and electrostatic serpentine slime dispersant. CMC, being a high molecular weight polymer, creates a serious handling problem in its introduction into the flotation processes. Typically, it is added as a 1-3% solution. This requires an enormous handling facility and makes its metallurgical gains uneconomical.Laboratory studies have shown that dry CMC addition as opposed to wet addition is feasible, as long as sufficient conditioning time is provided. Dry CMC addition into the grinding mill is also possible but its effectiveness is slightly reduced as compared to dry addition after grinding mills. Dry CMC addition using a vibratory feeder into the mill discharge is successfully applied in the treatment of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill.INTRODUCTIONManitoba Division MineralogyAt Inco’s Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson mill - primarily by froth flotation. The Thompson and Birchtree mines are both located within the Thompson Nickel belt. Sulphide mineralogy is relatively simple and includes both hexagonal and monoclinic pyrrhotite, pentlandite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The significant difference between the two mines is the amount of ultramafic rock associations in the host material. Increasingly, more of the ultramafic associated ores from the Birchtree mine are being processed through the mill with a characteristic poor metallurgy."

The experimental work described in this report is part of a continuing study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the fundamental physical processes involved in breaking rock with explosives. Six explosives were tested for their strain-producing abilities in a dolomitic marble. The explosives selected for testing had a tenfold variation in detonation pressure and a fivefold variation in characteristic impedance (product of loading density and rate of detonation). Strain pulses produced by the detonation of small charges of the explosives were recorded at distances of 5 to 130 feet. Peak strain, ?, was found to decrease with distance, R, in accordance with an exponential propagation law previously determined for other rock types, namely ? = (K/R)e ?aR The absorption constant, a, did not vary significantly with the explosive and was of the same order of magnitude as that for other rock types. The different explosives produced a fivefold variation in the value of the intercept constant, K.

The use of on-board scrubbers on continuous miners is an important aspect in efforts to reduce the amount of dust that heading workers are exposed to. As part of the CSIR:Mining Technology's research programme to combat dust, a collaborative project with the University of Pretoria was conducted to evaluate scrubbers. Based on fundamental parameters that were identified to play a role in determining the efficiency of scrubbers, a protocol for testing scrubbers in the laboratory environment, as well as the working section, was established. Tests on various prototype scrubbers were conducted in the laboratory environment. These tests proved some of the fundamental premises according to which scrubbers were designed. By testing some of the newer scrubber types underground, insight into the effect of alternative design aspects on scrubber efficiencies was obtained. The importance of the factors which play a role in reducing the amount of dust in the air is illustrated, as well as the role which other non-design factors play in the reduction of dust levels.
