The Kneeling Nun rock pinnacle is a prominent landmark, 90 ft in height and 35 ft in width, that resides on a bluff overlooking the Santa Rita pit at the Chino Mines Co. operations near Silver City, New Mexico. The company plans to expand the current pit limits, resulting in a change in direction and distance of hard rock mine blasting operations in relation to the pinnacle. Concerns about the stability of the pinnacle adjacent to mining activity has prompted company personnel to enhance the seismic monitoring program both on the pinnacle and along the current open pit highwall that forms the base support below the pinnacle foundation. This paper presents the vibration response characteristics of the pinnacle, in terms of amplitude and natural frequencies of motions and damping characteristics, for measurements recorded at the top and base of the pinnacle. The influence that blasthole initiation timing and sequence of hole detonations have on vibration response is discussed. A simple analysis is made to estimate factors of safety against cracking of the landmark as well as blast-induced slope instabilities within the foundation rock.

Since 1928, nearly 64 km (40 mi) of tunnel have been excavated within the relatively soft Cooper Group, more commonly known as the “Cooper Marl,” for water supply and transporting wastewater in the Charleston area. The majority of these tunnels are unlined and still in operation, while others collapsed shortly after excavating. Tunnel behavior and support requirements vary considerably in this material due to differences in geotechnical properties. The 4.8 km (3 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter Bushy Park Water Tunnel, completed in 1997 for Charleston’s Commissioners of Public Works(CPW), required no ground support. By comparison, the 1.6 km (1 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft)diameter Harbor Wastewater Replacement Tunnel now under construction needs continuous support close to the advancing face, despite being located in the same geological formation. Case histories and general guidelines for designing tunnels in the Cooper Marl are presented.

THE wire saw is a tool not less than 60 years old, probably nearer 100 years old. It was developed in Europe and is reputed to have originated in Belgium. Frombold is said to be the original patentee. [ ] Wire sawing equipment, as indicated in Fig. I, is very simple. It consists of a three-strand wire cable, usually 3/16 or 1/4 in. in diameter, or a single flat ribbon of medium hard, tough, alloy steel twisted into a helix of those diameters, made to form an endless belt of any length up to several thousand feet. The wire is guided into the cut by sheaves mounted in slides on steel columns situated close to either end of the cut. The feed motion usually is controlled either by gravity or by hand-operated feed screws. The steel columns or "standards" range from 15 to 30 ft. in length. At the top is a swiveled arm supporting a sheave similar to the traveling sheave below. Immediately under the swivel-mounted sheave is a guy plate or collar with shackles attaching four chain or wire-rope guys with suitable tightening devices, or with two guys and two jack legs for supporting the standard vertically or at any desired angle. The usual drive is by a 10-hp. motor through a gear reducer, on which are mounted two grooved sheaves, one of which is keyed and the other free running on the shaft. "Fine iron ore recovery from the tails of Les Mines Quebec Cartier was investigated using Reichert trays and spirals. The effect of feed rate, density and splitter setting on the performance of rougher, cleaner and recleaner stages of a 2DS tray assembly was determined using 2- and 3- factorial experimental designs. The tray concentrate, assaying 27% Fe, was further upgraded by spiral to yield a concentrate assaying 55% Fe. Further laboratory scale testing showed this material to be easily upgraded to 65-66% Fe with high Fe recoveries.This paper presents the metallurgical results of the three tray stages. The model used to predict the performance of a full recovery circuit is then described. Simulation results are presented and their reliability assessed. Finally, an economic evaluation of the proposed scavenging circuit is summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe Mount Wright plant (UWP), located near Fermont, Quebec, processes daily 130,000-150,000 tonnes of iron ore assaying between 27 and 33% Fe, to upgrade it with three stages of 44.5 cm pitch GEC spirals to 66% Fe, while rejecting approximately 80,000 tonnes assaying between 6 and 11% Fe (1-3). Heavy liquid separation (at 3. 3 g/mL) of the plus 37 µm fraction (+400 mesh) of the tails reveals that a significant fraction of the iron is in the sink product, below 150 pm (100 mesh), as shown in Table 1. Also shown is the iron grade of the sink and float fractions. The high grade of the fine sink indicates that hematite ls well liberated below 105 µm (150 mesh), as previous studies have shown (4,5). The iron grade of the floats is very low in the fine size range, but increases with increasing size above 105 pm, because of incomplete liberation. Overall, two thirds of the plus 37 µm iron ls in the sink product, which constitutes less than 10% of the total tail."

Risk Management has been applied relatively slowly in the mining industry. Except for the risk concept application in financial considerations, the application of Risk Management in safety management has been far from satisfactory. When applied it was treated in a global occupational safety and health sense. Regardless of how much the mining industry has progressed over the years it is still, in many respects, `state-of-the-art' business. The safety aspects of mining are well known and yet little understood by the public. Regardless of what has been achieved so far and how much effort has been put into it, mining is regarded as an unsafe and somehow rude business. Safety records of the mining industry vary from State-to-State. Latest mining related disasters in PNG and Queensland and some other fatal accidents support this public perception. They purport a need for change in managing safety in the mining industry. The latest mining fatalities have raised the issue: What must be done to improve safety standards? Duty of care, risk management and system engineering concepts can provide some answers. Risk Management principles which have been advocated for some time provide many answers and explanations and can make safety management more constructive and workable. What has been missing so far is that this concept has neither been applied nor has been modified for its practical application and purpose on a larger scale. A risk management approach to the management of safety and health in the mining industry is addressed, herein. This approach does not attempt to provide the solution. It does, however, provide a basic understanding of what Risk and Risk Management are all about. Rational management of risk is addressed in the life cycle and system contexts. A system of continuous improvement is applied. There is always a chain of events, outcome, exposure, consequence(s), and consequence(s) value(s). It means that development of an event takes place in time and space. Dynamic circumstances have been created in or within the system. It is a decision-making process designed to provide a methodology which is directed not toward a mathematical model but toward easy use and application in dynamic working environment, by decision-makers who can be anybody from either a risk taker or a risk creator. The emphasis is placed not only on arriving at the best practical, possible and fair decision but also on structured and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the system, its hazards and associated risks, hence increasing the decision maker's ability to manage the decision-making process related to the management of risk.

There is currently much interest in how extraction of gold and silver from ores with acidic thiourea solution compares with extraction using alkaline cyanide solution. Agitation leaching tests were performed by the Bureau of Mines on 14 precious metal ores using sodium cyanide (?NaCN) and thiourea [(NH2)2CS) as extractants. The objective was to compare the results of the two extractants. NaCN was used at a concentration of 2 g/L with and without H202 as an oxidant. (NH2)2CS was used at concentrations of 2 and 20 gjL, and the solution potential was controlled at 390 to 420 mV standard hydrogen electrode (Eh) with Fe2(S04)3. With both reagents a.t 2 g/L extractant levels, NaCN extracted more gold and silver than (NH2liCS from all of the ores. At 20 g/L (NH2)2CS compared with 2 g/L NaCN, (NH2)2CS extracted more gold than NaCN from two ores, the same amount from one ore, and more silver from one ore. NaCN extracted more gold than (NH2 )2CS from 10 ores and more silver from 4 ores.

President Lien presented Mrs. Holmes with the first of speaker appreciation gifts presented by his firm Amax Coal West, Inc. These were books by Rand-McNally entitled The Executive Golfer Guide. Following the coffee break, Clark Moseley presented the first annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards for the safest mines in the eight member state region. The awards were based on: 1. During the past decades, slurry electrolysis (SE) has been implemented commercially for the processing of bismuthinite and complex Pb-Cu bearing gold concentrates. Recently, SE was proven effective for the treatment of As-rich antimonic gold concentrates. Laboratory test results suggest over 98% of the antimony was extracted, while the extraction of arsenic and gold was less than 0.5%, and that of iron was less than 6%. Moreover, the cathode antimony contained over 98% antimony and less than 0.3% arsenic. Considering the disadvantages of traditional 3 kA slurry electrolysis baths, such as smaller electrode area, reduced capacity, and greater electrode deterioration, the authors have developed an innovative 12 kA slurry electrolysis bath equipped with mesh and fence type titanium alloy electrodes. Furthermore, the technique was successfully used within a pilot scale plant yielding results similar to those observed in the laboratory. The technique yielded ametallic antimony ingot of 99.9% purity after arsenic removal via the addition of Na2CO3.

Gold mining has been undertaken in South Africa for more than a century. A great proportion of that mining has been from the Witwatersrand Basin; a geological phenomenon that has few parallels throughout the world. It has produced some 47 000 tonnes of gold mainly from underground mines, many of which have been truly world class gold mines. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand Basin have dominated world gold production from their inception and their production has been one of the cornerstones of the development of South Africa as a whole. The mines have some very specific characteristics; their sheer size, the depth of extraction, the nature of the orebodies, and their labour-intensive methods. The mines have also been part of the Mining House concept-a concept unique to South Africa. South African production has declined from a maximum of 1000 tonnes in 1970 to 470 tonnes in 1997. This, as a percentage of western world production, has declined from a maximum of 79 per cent (in 1970) to 21 per cent of world production (in 1997). The nineties' have seen South Africa and its mining companies move onto the world stage and face the harsh realities of having to compete in all spheres of business with their aggressive counterparts principally in Australia, Canada and the USA. The fight is for investment funds with the owners looking for the best returns on their money. In his address Roger Dixon will examine the current situation in the gold mining industry and examine the competitiveness of the mines of the Witwatersrand Basin compared with their peers worldwide. He will also discuss some of the fundamental challenges facing South African gold mines in the areas of legislation, technology, industrial relations, and health and safety. The environment in which the mines operate has changed radically in recent years and their ability to respond to these challenges will determine their future existence.

Current steel consumption for grinding media, mill liners and rods in North America runs in excess of 400,000 tpy in the mineral processing industries. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. BURKE BAKER, Philadelphia, Pa. (written discussion*).-The small briquetting plant of the American Briquet Co., at 25th Street and Washington Ave., Philadelphia, was built primarily as a demonstration plant. Its output per hour is 4 tons of 2-oz. briquets, which have been retailed in the, vicinity during the year the plant has been in operation. They have proved very acceptable for use in ranges, heaters and grates in-home, and in steam heating plants in apartment houses and hotels. They have not been sold for power purposes, although satisfactory tests have been made in. this field. Anthracite silt is used and is shipped direct from breaker or washery, the only preparation it receives being the removal f excess moisture by means of a Ruggles-Coles rotary dryer. Care is taken, however, to purchase silt containing less than 18 per cent. ash. The method is covered by U. S. Patent No. 941454, issued to Chas. E. Hite, and is known as the "emulsion process." The binder, which is the, basis of the patent, is composed. of 0.5 per cent. cornstarch or wheat flour; 1 per cent. asphaltum or hydrolene, and 6.5 per cent. water, on the weight of coal dust. It is prepared in a tank equipped with paddle agitators and heated by steam jets. The starch and water are first made into a paste by being brought to the boiling point with live steam; the melted asphaltum is then introduced and thoroughly beaten into the paste by the agitators. This rapid stirring breaks. the hot asphaltum into minute particles which are distributed through the paste, producing a smooth chemical emulsion. This emulsion, when dried, is not soluble in water. The binder is mixed with the dry coal dust in a horizontal paddle mixer, 8 per cent. binder to the weight of coal being used. The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M) accepted the environmental liability for the Mount Morgan minesite in 1991. This gold and copper mine located 38 km southwest of Rockhampton had been in operation for more than 100 years. Mining leases are still active while the feasibility of a reprocessing operation is carried out. From 1993, NR&M have operated a seepage interception pumpback system which has reduced the chronic load of acid rock drainage (ARD) to the adjacent Dee River, a tributary of the Fitzroy River system. In early-2000, it was recognised that a ten-year plan for rehabilitation of the mine, along with significant funding would be required if a long-term sustainable rehabilitation strategy was to be implemented at this minesite, ultimately making the seepage interception system redundant. A rehabilitation planning workshop coordinated by NR&M was held in May 2000. This workshop brought to the mine a range of technical expertise and key stakeholder groups. This workshop provided a technical forum for review of studies undertaken and to identify priority projects, which needed to be undertaken in the future to more clearly define contaminant sources on the mine site and to prioritise the rehabilitation program. Stakeholder consultation enabled the project team to be clear on community and other government (eg Environmental Protection Agency) expectations. It is clear that the future of the economically depressed community of Mount Morgan will be reliant on the careful management of the significant heritage values at the minesite for tourism, education and research. In the first year (2000), priority studies were initiated, which included whole of site studies on water balance, contaminant sources and a review of occupational health and safety and environment of the minesite and conservation and heritage scoping. Baseline vegetation and soil materials surveys were also initiated. The outcomes of these studies helped to shape the work program for the following year, while providing a basis for an additional funding application, which was granted. The second year of studies focused on building upon the existing baseline studies completed. In addition, studies focussed on addressing the priority issue of contingency planning for overflow from the open cut pit in accordance with best practice management of release water and river monitoring strategies were completed. Completion of these projects over the next six months will enable the optimal rehabilitation strategy to be defined in 2003. This optimal strategy may require the use of a water treatment plant for part of the ten-year program to provide space in the open cut pit for the deposition of ARD contaminant sources (eg waste dumps, tailings). It is envisaged that some sources will be rehabilitated insitu while others will be relocated to the open cut pit. Implementation of this strategy will be dependent on subsequent funding.

"This presentation will showcase two challenging projects with deep excavation support systems in the Atlanta area where state-of-the-art instrumentation and monitoring systems were used to manage risk by confirming design performance requirements / calculations during construction. The instrumentation and monitoring system successfully reduced risk by recording real-time data on a project website while simultaneously sending email alarms to key site personnel when data exceeded pre-determined alarm thresholds. The monitoring data revealed unexpected performance at an early enough stage so that contingency plans could be engaged and remedial efforts devised in order to limit the consequences. Finite element analysis was used to model deformations, analyze the unexpected performance, and prepare theremedial design.INTRODUCTIONConstruction in densely populated urban areas is becoming more common in order to keep up with the increasing infrastructure demands of our growing population. America’s big cities continue to outpace the overall nation in population growth. The city of Atlanta, the nation’s ninth largest city based on metropolitan population, is a prime example of this. The population has grown at a rate of 6.6% between 2010 and 2013, nearly triple the overall growth rate of the United States during the same period (SustainAtlanta, 2015).As a result of increasing infrastructure demands in Atlanta, developers are now constructing larger buildings on smaller properties. In addition, developers are attempting to maximize space on their selected properties, often by designing underground parking garages to accommodate as many cars as possible on these compact sites. In some cases the selected sites are adjacent to buildings, utilities, and other existing structures. The risk associated with construction increases during underground work that requires a support of excavation system, particularly on confined sites adjacent to existing structures. There is a risk posed to people, property, and the environment that the project team should monitor when constructing in these conditions."

Deep Vibro Techniques namely Vibro Compaction (VC) and Vibro Replacement (VR) are widely used in ground improvement to densify sands and strengthen cohesive soils. This paper describes the application of these techniques for the construction of 20 Ha Iron Ore Stockpile Yard with the maximum stockpile height of 14 m in Quang Ngai, Vietnam. The challenges of this project are to limit the stockpile allowable settlement and the surrounding pile’s lateral movement. The soil condition can be summarized as 12m – 18m thick of loose to medium dense SAND with qc around 5-18MPa and followed by 2.0 – 6.0 m thick soft clay with qc around 0.4 – 0.8MPa. Localized very dense sand layer was found. VR using stone columns were installed in soft clay layer while VC was adopted to densify sand layer. Additional shallow stone columns were built in sand strata to minimize pile top lateral movement. The post construction performance was verified by a large 6 m by 12 m plate load test (PLT). The predicted PLT deformation using Priebe’s improved properties for the VR will be presented and compared with the measured plate load test results.

Alexandre Pourcel, of Paris, France, upon the proposal of a large number of distinguished members, and the unanimous recommendation of the Council, was elected by the Board of Directors an Honorary Member of the Institute. M. Pourcel has devoted forty-three years to the metallurgy of iron and steel ; and the work which he did between thirty and forty years ago constitutes an important part of the founda¬tion of the practice of to-day. Among his striking contribu¬tions are : (1) his perfection, in 1869, of the manufacture of high-grade ferro-manganese in a carbon-lined open-hearth furnace, instead of the costly crucibles previously used; (2) his discovery, in 1874, of the method of making solid steel cast¬ings; (3) his manufacture, in 1875, of ferro-manganese and silico-spiegel in the blast-furnace; and (4) his anticipation, in 1875, of modern American blast-furnace practice, by the pro¬duction, in a very small furnace, of Bessemer pig containing 2.5 per cent. of silicon, from a burden yielding only 46 per cent. of iron, and with a consumption, per ton of pig, of only 1,8401b. of coke, containing 15 per cent. of ash. These brilliant pioneer achievements, together with his contributions to cur¬rent technical literature, won for him the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute ; the great" medal of honor," which is the highest award of the French Society of Mineral Industry, and other gold medals, as well as the distinction of honorary membership of the Comité des Forges de France, which was conferred upon him in 1891. "In 1957, the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys (now Energy, Mines and Resources Canada) issued their first certificate for a fire-resistant conveyor belt. The testing procedure used was a combination of those used in the U.S.A. and the U.K. Subsequently, certification was granted to fire resistant electric cables (1974), fire-resistant mine duct material (1976) and fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (1978).Until recently, the testing procedures were copied from either the U.S. or the U.K. However, since the founding of the new Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Steering Committee for Electrical/Mechanical Mine Safety in 1981, these requirements have come under the close scrutiny of new CSA technical committees who will attempt to adopt or change the existing procedures to meet Canadian needs. This paper outlines the existing test requirements and attempts to predict how they will appear after ""Canadianization"" by the CSA committees.IntroductionFires in underground mines have always been considered more serious than in other locations because of the confined space and limited atmosphere. A fire can make escape difficult or impossible if it is blocking all of the routes to the surface. Also, the products of combustion from an underground fire can asphyxiate anyone not having self-contained breathing apparatus.In an underground coal mine, the consequences of a fire can be even more serious because of the presence of methane and coal dust in the atmosphere (which can explode) and because the coal itself is combustible.For these reasons, the inspection authorities having jurisdiction over underground mine s in Canada are quite concerned about the flammability of any materials that are used in quantity in the underground environmentAs early as 1957, the Canadian Explosive Atmospheres Laboratory (CEAL) was asked to certify conveyor belting as fire-resistant. Federal and State surface coal mining regulations require special handling of prime soil materials which result in additional costs, and no actual benefit when prime and non-prime soils are similar. The Coteau Properties Company proposes to mix both prime and non-prime topsoil and subsoils at the Freedom Mine in Mercer County, North Dakota, based on an analysis of soil physical and chemical characteristics which show these materials to be comparable.

The development of highly selective mineral processing reagents, which are not merely metal-ion specific, but specific to the particular mineral surface structure, is essential for the exploitation of relatively more difficult-to-process ore deposits, in particular for the separation amongst minerals having the same constituent ion. Both the choice of the functional group as well as the molecular architecture of the reagent determine its selectivity. Several examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the concepts of structure specificity and molecular recognition at mineral surfaces - the concepts crucial to the advancement of the emerging science of reagents design. Recent advances made in the understanding of molecular interactions involved in the synthesis of biomineralized materials are discussed so as to delineate the utility of this approach in the design of selective reagents for mineral separation.

"The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."
