The Northern West Virginia Region of Consolidation Coal Company consists of ten underground mines. The Pittsburgh seam of coal is being mined. This seam is approximately seven feet in thickness in our area. The mining equipment consists of twelve longwall systems and a combination of Joy and Jeffrey ripper type miners. There are a few boring type machines still in use, but these are rapidly being phased out. The auxiliary ventilation fans being utilized vary in type from single stage carriage mounted 20 horse-power Joys to 40 and 50 horsepower two-stage Joys, Buffalo Forge, and Peabody brands. The particular fans that we have primarily been working with on noise reduction are the two-stage 40 and 50 horsepower types.

The Cienega project, now under construction by Penoles group, is located in the mountains of the State of Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in the 4-km long system of veins, which will be extracted by underground methods. The planned 1000 tpd process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

This Technical Note was presented as a poster at the Western Cape Mineral Processing Symposium held in August 2001 The cleaning of fine coal (-1000 µm) in today?s coal preparation plants is an economically important factor. Coals with high ash contents are, in general, commercially undesirable. Current well-known techniques for treating fine coal include froth flotation and spirals. The primary critical factor with regards to spirals is the efficiency of the process whereas that of flotation, is the cost of there agents used. Research into enhanced gravity separation techniques has resulted in several commercially available enhanced gravity separators. This project was based on a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of one such separator, to effectively treat fine (-500 µm) coal. Experimental variables included particle size and speed of rotation of the said instrument. The performance of the separator was compared to the results obtained from liquid density separations done for the two coal fractions evaluated. From the results obtained in this preliminary study it appears that the piece of equipment investigated does not measure up to expectations. Recommendations for further investigation include the evaluation of the instrument on other South African coals to obtain conclusive results.

TANTALUM like several other metals exhibits a great affinity for or reactivity with certain gases. Tested in atmospheres which are not completely pure this metal becomes contaminated by certain impurities (notably nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen) with a resultant change in various properties. Well-known are the drastic changes in hardness, ductility, and electrical resistivity. Also previously recorded are the distortions of the lattice1,2 accompanying the increased content of oxygen and nitrogen in tantalum. This pronounced affinity for certain gases along with the significant property variations thereby produced makes it necessary to observe additional experimental precautions in making various property determinations with tantalum. Some recent measurements of the linear thermal-expansion characteristics of tantalum have made this point quite emphatically. Failure to observe the greatest precautions in reducing the contaminating influence has led to some extremely distorted results. Not only does such operation lead to different heating and cooling curves during the thermal-expansion measurements, but upon cooling to room temperature the sample is found to have suffered a permanent (actually semipermanent since the specimen can be returned to its original length by a 3-hr degassing treatment in vacuum at 2300°C) elongation. In addition, subsequent heatings will not follow the initial heating curve unless the expansion measurements are based on the actual specimen length at the beginning of the heating cycle. These thermal-expansion measurements were made by positioning the specimen horizontally at the longitudinal midpoint of a 20-in.-long, 4-in.-diam resistively heated tungsten tube furnace. The specimens were in the form of 20-mil sheet formed into a sharp U-shape about 0.3 in. in width and 0.3 in. in depth. Fiducial marks in the form of 0.010-in. holes drilled at either end of the 2.5-in.-long sheet specimens were viewed by a paired filar micrometer telescope system mounted on an Invar bar on the top of the furnace. Tests were made in helium with temperatures measured by a Pt/Pt-lORh thermocouple to 1000°C; above 1000°C temperature was measured by means of an optical pyrometer sighted into a black-body hole drilled into the specimen-holding fixture in the vicinity of the specimen. Previous tests with black-body holes drilled in a 0.25-in.-diam rod specimen had confirmed the temperature uniformity between specimens and specimen-holding fixture in this furnace. A typical thermal-expansion curve for arc-cast tantalum in helium is shown in Fig. 1 for the case where no attempt is made to remove all the impurities from the cover-gas atmosphere. The initial heating curve appears smooth and has a shape characteristic of all metals. However, it is known that the sample begins absorbing impurities at temperatures above 1000°C which are sufficient to distort the lattice and lead to specimen lengths which are somewhat larger than would be obtained in the absence of contamination. During the cooling cycle the expansion curve is seen to be significantly different from the heating curve. This is due to the impurity content causing a semipermanent (i.e., permanent until the impurities are removed by vacuum degassing) deformation which will not allow the speci-

An important part of underground mine planning and operations involves the reclamation of working areas after blasting before the mining cycle can continue. This is especially true for mining that must use large blasting operations in the vicinity of extensive underground workings. In an effort to develop a rational procedure for estimating mine damage produced by blasting, underground rock fall has been assessed for a large-scale blasting operation in oil shale. The amount of mine damage has been quantified in terms of manshifts of effort required to reclaim underground working areas after blasting. This has been further broken down into the three main phases of reclamation, i.e., scaling and excavation, rockbolting, and miscellaneous repairs on ventilation, utilities, etc. Different types of openings have also been assessed including level tunnels, incline drifts and rooms. The effect of repeated blasting on mine damage has also been documented with initial blasts producing more damage than subsequent blasts.

Most commercial explosives contain from 70% to 94% (by weight) ammonium nitrate. When some of the explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through either spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates can leach into the ground water. In recent years, state and federal regulators have applied more stringent water-quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. When mining conditions permit, bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice. ANFO is less costly than other explosives but it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. These approaches range from controlling explosive losses to treating the mine effluents. In this paper, controlling explosive losses is addressed For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines to limit losses during storage, handling and use are described in detail.

"Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load–deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are generally used to support compressive loads from superstructures. Some structures, like transmission towers, mooring systems for ocean surface or submerged platforms, tall chimneys, jetty structures, etc. are constructed on pile foundations, which have to resist large lateral and uplift loads and moments. The various loads (compressive, lateral and uplift) and moments act on the piles simultaneously rather than isolated manner. There are well-established theoretical methods present to evaluate the pile behaviour under different isolated loadings namely, verticalcompressive, vertical-uplift and lateral (Poulos and Davis, 1980), but there are very limited studies focused on pile behaviour under combined loadings. Though there is good number of studies reported on pile behaviour under combined compressive-lateral and compressive-uplift loadings (Ramasamy, 1974; Jain et al. 1987; Zhang and Small, 1999; Dash and Pise, 2003; Karthigeyan et al. 2006 & 2007; , there are only very few studies reported on pile behaviour under combined uplift and lateral loads. Darr et al. (1990) described an approach to a rational solution of the interaction of pile to combined uplift and lateral loads based on analytical and experimental studies. Influence of cyclic loading was also considered. Narasimha Rao and Prasad (1993) investigated the uplift behaviour of pile anchors subjected to lateral cyclic loading. There were many onshore and offshore situations where lateral cyclic loading may affect both the pullout and lateral loading capacity of pile anchors. Jetty and wharf structures are usually subjected to lateral forces from wave and wind action. If these cyclic lateral loads are acting on the supporting piles, the resulting movement of the upper part of the embedded length of pile may reduce the skin friction. This progressive deterioration in pullout resistance may not be reflected by a pullout test made soon after the installation. Hence, Tomlinson and Woodward (2008) pointed out that a generous safety factor on the ultimate pullout load should be adopted for piles in such situations. Mroueh and Shahrour (2007, 2008) presented a threedimensional finite element analysis of the response of battered piles to the combined lateral and vertical pullout loads. Nevertheless, the model is not validated well due to lack of good experimental data based on rigorous experiments. Thus there is a scope for investigating the effect of lateral load on pile behaviour under uplift load and vice versa based on carefully designed experiments, which is main focus of the present investigation."

NVI Mining’s Myra Falls operation is a forty-year-old underground mining operation feeding a 4,000 metric tonnes per day concentrator. The current mill, built in 1985, was designed to process a massive sulphide ore-body. This orebody, known as the HW, contains about 50% pyrite. Minerals of value are chalcopyrite and sphalerite, with precious metals occurring in all mineral types. By 1997, mining of a new ore-body, known as Battle-Gap, commenced. Mineralogically complex, the new orebody contains about 15% pyrite copper minerals, including primary chalcopyrite and secondary bornite, chalcocite and tennantite, combined with increased galena and sphalerite. Flotation performance generally decreased with increasing amounts of Battle-Gap ore types, with both copper concentrate quality (increased lead and zinc content) and copper recoveries being affected. Following significant metallurgical test-work, a new, fully sequential copper-lead-zinc flotation flow sheet and reagent scheme was developed. This sequential flow sheet was progressively installed and commissioned during 2006. Copper concentrate lead and zinc smelter penalty contents have been reduced by some 40%, while increasing copper recovery by 10%.

The behavior of particulate non-metallic materials in moving contact with smooth surfaces is of interest and concern to manufacturers and users of abrasives, of fillers, and of pigments alike. The theoretical aspects of the subject have been treated to considerable extent in the literature, and correlatic,ns are available that attempt to relate various methods of hardness determination." 2 The particle size and friability are characteristics of the abrasive that are not related to the smooth surface. The hardness, on the other hand, may be visualized as relative to that of the smooth surface. In a study of abrasive action, the role that hardness, per se, plays is a complicated one. For it is necessary to compare the "hardness" of the abrasive, usually a non-metallic, with that of the smooth surface, generally a metal. Hardness of non-metallics is defined as resistance to scratch and is almost universally described with respect to the Mohs scale.3 Minerals have been rated by Mohs numerically from the softest (talc = 1) to the hardest (diamond = 10). By definition, a mineral has a designated hardness when it is scratched by the standard that is numerically just above it on the scale; and conversely, when it scratches the standard that is just below it. Hardness of metals. however.. implies resistance to indentation, a property that has been measured by a number of methods. In fact, the indentation hardnesses of the standard minerals on the hlohs scale have been determined by the Rockwell tester. Reproduced below are two versions of this correlation. 'A conversion chart, prepared by Wilson Mechanical Instruments Division of American Chain and Cable Co., merely gives the conversion from Rockwell to Knoop hardness. The relation between Knoop indentation hardness and Mohs scale has been reported by G. S. Smith — A New Scale of Hardness, The Engineer, Aug. 26. 1949. G. F. Kinney in Engineerin Properties and Aplications of Plastics reports the Rockwell hardness of the minerals directly in the Mohs scale. This is the final report of work done under contract H0210060 for the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. This program was to show the feasibility of using plastic liners containing sand and other fillers as a means of roof support in coal and other mines. This laboratory study was conducted in two phases, namely: Phase I, directed toward determining which state-of-the-art resin systems might have utility as a means of roof support in a coal mine, consisted of a canvass of resin manufacturers to learn which resins were available commercially that might have utility for this application. The resins submitted by the manufacturers were evaluated in a number of simple tests to define which of them would be most suitable for roof support use.

The high temperatures encountered in the operation of jet engines have imposed most drastic requirements upon the materials used in their construction. There are two different approaches to the materials problem connected with the design of parts in contact with high temperature gases. The first approach is to use a material which will perform satisfactorily at a temperature comparable to that of the gas. The second approach is to use a cooling system so that the material is maintained at a temperature appreciably lower than that of the gas. Besides the conventional method of cooling by means of a liquid in contact with the material exposed to a high rate of heat transfer, a less orthodox method consists of making the part to bc cooled of a porous material', so that the cooling fluid can be forced through the pores, In this scheme, the temperature of the coolant moving in a direction opposite to that of the heat flow increases gradually while passing through the porous material, and the coolant forms a protective layer on the surface exposed to heat, This method, referred to as ((sweat cooling," was pro- posed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in September 1944, and the experimental work on the preparation of porous metals was started early in 1945. The sweat cooling method opens new lines of research in powder metallurgy by extending the field of application of porous metals. The porous metals available at the present time are used mostly as bearings or filters, and a rather limited number of alloys are made for these applications. In addition, the fabrication of bearings or filters does not require a very close control of the permeability, while in the case of sweat cooling such a control is of primary importance. In designing a sweat cooled part it is imperative to assure a given rate of flow of coolant under certain conditions of Pressure drop. Generally, the Proper pressure drop and the rate of flow of coolant are deduced from heat transfer and design considerations, and consequelltl~ the Permeability of the Porous metal to be used is also determined. It is therefore necessary for the designer to have available a continuous series of porous metals covering a range of permeability as wide as possible. Contrary to the requirements established in the fabrication of filters, the actual pore size of a porous metal intended for sweat cooling is of little consequence, except for its effect on permeability. The tensile strength is likely to be of great importance for some applications. Since the tensile strength of a porous alloy decreases with increasing porosity, an important problem is to develop porous alloys having the maximum permeability with minimum porosity.

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. Large-scale sand consolidation tests were conducted in an effort to determine the reasons for the successes and failures of this method of sand control. Several different consolidating materials were used in treating both clean and bentonitic sands that were packed in a chamber having a capacity of 3.3 cu ft. The results were essentially the same for all of the different consolidating materials, The data show that low-viscosity consolidating materials pumped at a relatively slow rate gave the best results. Where the formation has produced sand, the treating fluids can compress the formation, thus permitting the channeling of fluids to another horizon. Pressure-packing these zones before attempting to consolidate is recommended. Sands containing more than 4 per cent of water-swelling clays are not good candidates for consolidation. It is indicated that loose sand, particularly when it is bentonitic, can be fractured during the placement of the treating fluids. INTRODUCTION Sand production in oil and gas wells has plagued the industry for many years, and numerous cures for this problem have been suggested. Most methods have been successful to a certain degree, but the great variety of well conditions that exist in the different areas has magni- fied the problem and limited the successful use of the various systems. Four review papers1-4 present a wealth of information concerning the degrees of success that have been obtained by the different sand-control methods. The bridging of sand grains by the use of gravel packs and screens has been quite successful. However, these methods do not leave the casing clear for all types of multiple completions, and the cure does not last for the production life of the well in some instance:;. The control of loose sands by sand consolidation with resins has never been as successful as desired. It has always been hoped that such a treatment would eliminate all sand problems for the life of the well, but. initial applications, starting in the middle 1940&apos;s, were only moderately successful. Lott, et a1,3 reported a success ratio of approximately 50 per cent and made the following conclusions. The highest percentage of successes were obtained where: a. Consolidation of a zone was made at the time of initial completion or prior to the production of sand. b. The interval treated was less than 12 ft in length. c. Between 30 and 50 gill plastic/ft of producing interval was displaced through the perforations. REASONS FOR SAND CONSOLIDATION FAILURES Our own experiences in the field of sand consolidation point toward the following conditions as the major reasons for the failure of sand consolidation attempts. 1. Mud-plugged perforations and mud invasion of the formation. 2. Sand in the casing covering all or part of the perforations. This sand could be either formation sand or one of the coarser sands used as propping agents in hydraulic fracturing. 3. Holes in the casing. 4. Channels behind the casing. 5. Attempting to treat too long a perforated section. 6. Too high a percentage of water-swelling clays in the formation. 7. Formations that have produced sand. Recent attempts were made to treat perforated sections ranging from 10 to 30 ft, in wells that have produced sand, by using a straddle packer that was raised and lowered through the perforations as the consolidating material was being pumped. In most instances, the pressure required to pump fluid into the formation varied considerably as the tool was raised and lowered. This suggested the possibility that significant differences in permeability were present or that only part of the formation had produced sand. There were times when a sudden break in pressure indicated that a fracture was being formed. Research conducted several years ago concerning the problem of the control of water in air and gas drilling indicated that shale sections could be fractured quite easily. In addition, it was determined that it was easier to pump fluids into shale bodies by fracturing the shale itself, or the interface between the shale and sand, than to pump into a fluid-saturated formation. Formations that produce sand are usually adjacent to shale bodies and frequently have shale streaks of various thicknesses inter-bedded in the sand. In the preparation of illustrations to accompany reports of investigations concerning particle shapes of various natural and manufactured materials proposed for use as he aggretates in concrete structures, it was found that stereoscopic views of such materials presented the information much more effectively than the usual two-dimensional photographs. With the whole-hearted cooperation of the Photographic Section, a technique was developed in the petro-graphic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss., for simple and rapid preparation of paired stereoscopic photographs and micrographs. The method requires only equipment which is usually part of the general stock of any laboratory, and it is adaptable for all purposes in which three-dimensional views would be found superior to ordinary photographs. Stereoscopic Photographs Where the subject or subjects to be photographed are small but not of microscopic size, an ordinary camera having a ground-glass focusing screen is set up vertically over the field. The material to be photographed is placed on a card, the surface of which is suitable as a background. The card is mounted so that it can be tilted about 5&apos; above and below the horizontal plane, on an axis that coincides with the north-south diameter of the viewing screen. A simple way of achieving this is to mount the card on an object having a convex lower surface. In our laboratory, a watch-glass has been used, with plasticene as the mounting medium. The convex surface should be mounted on a support having a round opening on top and a flat bottom. A roll of tape, a petri dish, a beaker, or any other piece of equipment having the proper shape to give stability to the setup will be satisfactory. The arrangement of the required equipment is shown in Fig 1. For the best results, the subject to be photographed should be mounted in the plane of the axis of rotation. To achieve this effect, the depth of the mass of plasticene between the background and the watch-glass is varied so that when the watch-glass is tilted back and forth on the axis, the subject to be photographed does not appear to move back and forth across the viewing screen. A permanent piece of equipment, embodying an adjustable vertical screw, with lock-nuts, could be made for this purpose. The subject may be illuminated in any manner desired. It was found that the presence of shadows intensifies the effect of depth. In taking the photographs, the concave surface is mounted so that one side of the background card is about 5&apos; below the horizontal, while the axis remains in the horizontal plane. The subject is focused carefully on the ground glass and a picture is taken. The card is then tilted so that the opposite side is about 5&apos; below the horizontal, while the axis still remains in the horizontal plane. The subject is again put in focus and another picture is taken. The objective of Contract J0295041 was to determine if the addition of a surfactant (wetting agent) to the water used for dust control in underground coal mines results in the reduction of airborne dust. Laboratory wettability tests, including the capillary rise test, a coal dust sinking test and zeta potential measurements, were used to select a coal seam/surfactant combination for in-mine testing. Four surfactants were selected for underground testing: Surfynol 465, Aerosol MA-80, DC-13, and Dustallay. The underground tests in the Lower Kittanning seam, Indiana County, PA, involved a Wilcox Mark 20 auger mining system, equipped with spray nozzles located on the cutting augers, Conflow venturi sprays, and a spray manifold. Respirable dust samples were provided by MSA Model G personal samplers and Simslin II instantaneous dust monitor; total airborne dust samples were provided by MSA Model G samplers with UNICO filter cassettes. Based on data obtained from 24 test periods surfactants, as compared to plain water, reduced the airborne respirable dust an average of 27 percent and total airborne dust an average of 36 percent.

Galvanized steel sheet is the major product for the automobile industry. Therefore, automotive recycling results in zinc-containing scrap that should be remelted in EAFs. Naturally, the EAF dust is a very important source of zinc for zinc recycling processes. The thermodynamic properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds formed on the surface of galvanized steel sheet should be clarified to make clear the evaporation mechanism of zinc; however, there are few reports on these compounds because of difficulties in their synthesis. There are various intermetallic compounds in the Fe-Zn system. We synthesized them at about 673K. A specimen was examined chemically and X-ray diffraction was applied to ensure the formation of intermetallic compounds. Material containing two phases was placed in a Knudsen type effusion cell and the mass spectrum studied to evaluate the vapor pressure of zinc. The thermodynamic property of intermetallics was then evaluated through measured intensity.

This paper describes highlights of the Placer Dome MiniMole project - the development and testing of a robotic machine for mining narrow ore veins. A prototype hydraulically controlled robotic machine was built and tested. The machine provided a platform for testing numerous cutters in the field. Other cutters, e.g. undercutting devices, were tested in the lab. Extensive analyses were done on specific energies and cutter penetration. Three sets of quarry trials were done, then the machine was tested in an underground mine. Rock UCS values varied from 180 MPa to 230 MPa. The paper includes lessons learned and recommendations based on the project findings.

Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.
