"INTRODUCTIONInternational Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited operates two potash mine/refinery complexes near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Annual production of approximately 4.2 million tons is sold in the United States and overseas in five grades according to size and quality.Ore grading 25% K2 0 equivalent is mined from a horizontal bed by continuous boring machines, crushed, and hoisted at 8 inches. The refinery operation consists of the eight basic steps shown in Figure 1. Particle sizes handled are similar to those experienced in other forms of mineral beneficiation: 8 inches to 100 mesh. The ore is crystalline and particles are angular. Fortunately the major mineral constituents, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), demonstrate relatively low hardness at 2 to 2.5.Therefore, while simple abrasion must be acknowledged, it is not a major problem except, of course, in circuits carrying magnetite.Corrosion, as represented by the classic equations of Figure 2, occurs in all its various forms."

Utah has produced about one billion troy oz. (31.7M tonnes) of silver, more than any U.S. state except Idaho. Several very high grade ore systems, now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These Utah mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham porphyry mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcano sedimentary rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement meta quartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d’Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to porphyritic plutonic rocks.

Cobar Mines Pty. Limited (CMPL) uses sodium sulphite as the principal depressant to attain selectivity in copper flotation prior to sequential recovery of lead and zinc. The usage of sodium sulphite is examined both from a theorectical viewpoint ana from the manner in which the copper circuit at (MPL has developed. The results of relatively recent investigations, both in the laboratory ana the plant, are discussed aria shown to support the present operating Techniques.

In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.

"Recent underground coal mine incidents have again raised the issue of: under what circumstanceis it safe for personnel to re-enter the mine? Mine rescue guidelines make recommendations aboutthe limits in terms of the circumstances, lives at risk, no lives at risk and training exercises. Theseare based upon percentages of the upper and lower explosive limits. Many factors infl uencesett ing limits for safe re-entry. These include: the representativeness of the sampling location(s),the rapidity of gett ing an underground sample analysed and the rate of change of the atmospherebeing monitored. Value judgements based upon these parameters will then infl uence the sett ing ofa trigger point based upon per cent explosibility. This raises the question of how the percentage ofthe lower or upper explosive limit is established. It is easy to defi ne this when the sampling pointdata sit on the fresh air limit line. However - what value is used when the sample sits somewherein the body of an explosibility diagram? This paper explores the various options and illustratesvarious pitfalls and problems that are faced in making such a determination. These include howthe data are represented and the assumed knowledge of those doing the interpretation."

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

Experiments indicate that the fatigue limit of various drill steels becomes vanishingly small in the presence of water and other corrosive liquids. Therefore one must generally expect fatigue failures of drill steels in a great many field operations. However, it is theoretically possible to so choose the hammer impact speed of a percussion drill in order to maximize the total length of hole drilled before failure occurs. In this paper the existence of an optimum speed is demonstrated and it is shown to be comparable to presently used piston speeds. The influence on drilling speed and hole length of a number of other pertinent design features, such as bit geometry, hammer geometry and steel properties is also established. Although machinery should be designed to obtain optimum performance, it is not always clear just what performance characteristic is to be optimized. For example in a rock drill it would be desirable to optimize all of the following characteristics: drilling speed, bit life, steel life, total length of hole drilled before failure, and efficiency of energy conversion. The word failure could signify excessive bit wear, bit fracture, steel fracture, or some other type of component failure. It is not possible in general to optimize all performance criteria simultaneously. For example, one could achieve fantastically large drilling rates at the expense of bit or steel life, energy requirements and physical size of system. It therefore becomes necessary to compromise requirements in order to achieve a well-balanced albeit non-optimum design. It is, however, extremely useful to explore the interrelationships between the different performance characteristics. Such a procedure would help to establish theoretical limits of performance within the framework of existing knowledge and also serve as a practical design procedure for special applications where a particular performance characteristic is of greatest concern to the user (e.g., steel breakage might be especially undesirable in certain locations). It is the purpose of this paper to examine the problem of how one may drill the deepest possible hole before breakage of the drill steel occurs. Of course the problem is almost trivial if a well defined fatigue limit (endurance limit) exists for the drill steel. In such cases one merely keeps the piston impact speed sufficiently low to insure that the stresses in the steel never exceed the fatigue limit, thereby achieving an infinite life. If, however, no definite fatigue limit exists, as seems to be the case in the presence of even mildly corrosive agents such as water (see later discussion), then a finite life is inescapable and one can at best hope to maximize the useful life of the system. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether it is possible to substantially improve the fatigue resistance of lead sheet by means of surface coatings. Five types of coatings were applied to unalloyed chemical lead sheet. Flexural tests revealed that the best fatigue resistance was obtained with coatings of vacuum grease. Vacuum-grease coatings on unalloyed lead sheet resulted in fatigue resistance at least as good as that of the fatigue-resistant alloy Pb-0.04 Ca. Coated lead sheet was also tested in short-time tensile tests and in tensile creep tests. Tensile and yield strengths were increased by several of the coatings with only moderate loss of ductility. Creep resistance was also improved in varying degrees by most of the coatings. The Bureau also conducted research on the effectiveness of noise barriers by using sheet lead in combination with other materials. Noise barriers consisting of continuous-cast sheet lead with gypsum board were found to be effective and relatively inexpensive barriers.

Solid-solution alloys of the Ta- Ti system containing up to 70 at. pct Ti were melted and fabricated into wire. Steady magnetic-field measurements of cold-worked wires at 4.2°K indicate that the resistive critical field increases smoothly with increasing titanium, reaching a maximum of 93 kG (J = 1 amp per sq cm) for a composition of about 50 at. pct Ti. The composition dependence of the resistive critical field indicates it is largely paramagnetically limited for alloys containing more than 35 at. pct Ti. For cold-worked wires the value of the critical current density, Jc , was found to be insensitive to composition changes for compositions in excess of 20 at. pct Ti. It was observed that Jc could be increased by final-size heat treatment at 400°C without altering the value of- the resistive critical field. Experimental data are used to calculate the electronic specific-heat coefficient and the "upper critical field" for the alloys studied. THE effect and importance of metallurgical structure on superconducting properties have been summarized by Livingston and Schadler.1 Specific work on solid-solution alloys such as Nb-zr2-7 and Nb-Ti5-7 have shown that critical current density (Jc) and superconducting transition temperature are structure-sensitive. Berlincourt et al.6,8,9 in their studies of transition-metal alloys find that Ta-Ti alloys remain superconducting at fields comparable to Nb-Ti alloys. 6,8 Transverse critical current tests of a Ta-10 at. pct Ti alloy10 and longitudinal critical current tests of a Ta-25 at. pct Ti alloy1' indicate that such alloys are capable of carrying high currents at intermediate fields (-40 kG). The work reported in the present paper was undertaken to explore the superconducting properties of further compositions in the Ta-Ti alloy system as well as the structure sensitivity of the superconducting properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by melting tantalum (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., 99.96 pct purity) and iodide, crystal bar titanium (Foote Mineral Co., 99.92 pct purity) mixtures in an arc furnace on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode. Melting was accomplished in a purified, gettered argon atmosphere at pressures from 250 to 400 Torr. Each alloy was turned and remelted fourteen times to assure complete mixing of tantalum and titanium. Ex- cessive coring in the cast samples was, nevertheless, observed. This was somewhat reduced by annealing in vacuo at 1000°C for 13 hr. The ingots were then machined to 0.250 in. diam, jacketed in Type 304 stainless-steel tubing, and swaged to 0.140 in. diam. They were then drawn to 0.010-in.-diam wire. Alloys containing up to 70 at. pct Ti were readily cold-drawn to wire in this manner. Later experiments showed that oxygen additions up to -3000 ppm could also be cold-worked into wire. Test samples for superconductivity measurements in the 2-in, air-core Bitter solenoids of the M.I.T. National Magnet Laboratory were prepared from 10-in. lengths of 0.010-in.-diam wire, cleaned of residual wire-drawing lubricant. Current contacts were made by clamping clean copper tubing over both No. 18 current lead wire and the ultrasonically indium-tinned ends of the specimen wire.12 Potential leads of No. 32 copper wire were connected to the specimen by ultrasonic soldering in an indium bath. The potential lead separation was about 4 cm, corresponding to the circumference of the Bakelite rod to which the wire was affixed with half-mil Teflon tape. The final specimen configuration is shown in Fig. 1. Specimens were lowered into a liquid helium bath (4.2oK) in a double solenoid dewar and positioned so that the maximum magnetic field was oriented transverse to the wire axis of the gage section. Measurements were made by passing a current through the specimen at a preset solenoidal magnetic field. The current was increased until a 1-pv potential difference appeared across the gage section (1/4 µv per cm). The Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) began operation in 1982 with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and the local community. This commitment ensured the long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the mine site and maintained an active partnership with local stakeholders. Concerns for economic development intensified as mine closure loomed on the horizon and fostered the inception of the Community Transition Advisory Committee(CTAC).This coalition of interested area stakeholders has the primary focus to sustain current mining operations while concurrently seeking alternative post-mine economic development opportunities utilizing existing mine assets. Accomplishments include development of an Asset Re-utilization and Post-closure Plan, a community survey regarding the impending mine closure, recruiting an international wind energy company to develop a wind farm, and development of an industrial/business park. The synergy of this strong partnership is key to meeting sustainability goals and enhancing potential future mining operations. The cooperative effort of the GSM and the local stakeholders is a success story that could be a role model for other mining operations.

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

The paper highlights the experimental investigations to characterize texture and plastic strain ratio r-Bar in auto grade steel sheets by ultrasonic measurements, whereas attempts were made to characterize interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties in prestressed concrete wires by eddy current measurements. Good correlations were obtained between the testing parameters (such as ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in case of steel sheets as well as eddy current out put voltage and phase angle in case of steel wires) and the materials properties (such as texture, plastic strain ratio r-Bar, interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties). 15 MHz normal direct contact and 20 MHz delay line normal shear wave probes were used for ultrasonic measurements. Eddy current measurements were done using an absolute coil probe with variable frequency selection. The experimental results show the possibility of nondestructive on line measurement of the above microstructures and properties.

In order to meet increasing demands for water supply in the next millennium, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have identified the need for a major new water treatment and transfer scheme. The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. Retreat mining is one of the most hazardous operations conducted underground. One of the keys to miner safety and an efficient recovery of the reserves is to design adequately sized production pillars to prevent pillar squeezes, excessive pillar spalling, severe floor heave, roof falls, and pillar bumps. Currently, few pillar design approaches are available which consider the abutment pressures generated by the gob. The Bureau of Mines is developing a method called Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) to aid in the design of retreating sections. Back analysis of 42 case studies indicates that ARMPS can be helpful in predicting stability during retreat mining operations.

"In 1994 world trade grew by 9%, the fastest annual increase since 1976. Dry cargo shipping rates are at an all time high.Panamax size bulk carriers are receiving19 000 US dollars per day for trans Atlantic round trip voyages. This is good news for the ship owners but not such good news for the industrial users of ocean shipping.The main emphasis of this paper will be on bulk carriers, the charter market and what industrial companies can do to reduce their costs of ocean transportation which is critical to Canadian exporters. Let us look at the charter market in general.Bulk carriers come in four main sizes:1.The Capesize bulk carriers of 110 000 to160 000 tons that are primarily used to transport iron ore and coal;2.the Panamax bulk carriers of about 70 000tons dwt. This is the largest size (with a beam of 105 ft) that can transit the Panama Canal.3.the Handymax bulk carriers of 40/45 000tons dwt; and4.the Handysize bulk carriers of 20/35 000tons dwt.The handysize vessels are usually craned or geared and carry a variety of bulk cargoes including steel. Ship sizes have increased over the years and the mining industry now uses primarily capesize or Panamax bulk carriers.International chartering is conducted through an international network of shipbrokers. There is usually one broker representing the ship owner and another broker who represents the charterer. The major chartering centers are London and New York but a great deal of chartering activity is conducted in regional markets such as Hongkong, Oslo, Montreal and Hamburg.The Biffex Index or Baltic Freight Index is a good measure of dry bulk freight rates. The Biffex is composed of ten major routes. In May1995, the Biffex was at 2310 points. A year earlier it was at 1354, an increase of about 56%."

The publication from which this paper was abstracted is the first at-tempt to correlate all the metallogenic deta compiled by the author for the preparation of the 1:2,000,000 Metallogenic Map of Central America. It is not a treaty of metallogenic theories but rather a careful effort to postulate metallogenic provinces and epochs with the intention to stimulate other geologists and mining companies familiar with the area to criticize and improve on the ideas proposed. The sole purpose being to find new mineral deposits for the betterment of our people.

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Maricunga mine in Chile presents an ideal opportunity to apply the SART process to a heap leach operation. Given increasing levels of cyanide complexed copper in current pregnant solutions from Maricunga heaps (over 300 ppm Cu), there is a need to reduce these levels and decrease cyanide consumption and cost. Additionally, a means of disposing of this copper is required, preferably as a saleable product. The well published SART process applied to gold-copper cyanide solutions was selected as it allows rapid precipitation of cyanide soluble copper as a relatively pure copper sulphide. The process also allows effective recovery and recycle of cyanide back to the heap leach operation.This paper reviews the SART process chemistry and presents a summary of SART bench-scale and pilot plant testwork completed by Kinross. Key design parameters and engineering aspects of the proposed plant at Maricunga are discussed. SART plant operating costs and net revenue analysis are included and illustrate the compelling economics of installing a SART process plant. OPEN-PIT mining of coal is relatively a recent innovation; men still active in the industry can trace its development. Re- viewing the growth of operations from the original horse-drawn scrapers, through the various stages of power equipment to the huge strip- ping shovels of today, one also notes changes in the methods of what the coal man calls preparation at the face. We really should not call it face preparation because, in contrast to underground mining, a face does not exist in strip mining. Further, preparation of the coal for market at the loading point has already, in but a few years, become largely of historic interest only and modern mines as well as old mines recently modernized rely almost entirely on separate and elaborate preparation plants to produce marketable coal. Lead recovery from process solutions contributes not only to the conservation of resources but also clean environment. Zeolites are natural aluminosilicates, which finds applications as catalysts and in wastewater treatment. In the present investigation, studies were taken up on the processing of Pb from process solutions by zeolites. Effects of pH of the solution, time and type of zeolite viz. chabazite, mordenite, erionite and clinoptilolite on the removal of Pb from solutions was investigated. Rate of sorption was found to depend on the pH of the solution and about 99 pct. recovery was observed at pH 6. Optimal conditions were established for the maximum recovery of lead from process solutions. Possible sorption mechanisms were proposed. The calculated adsorption constants calculated from Langmuir and Freundlich equations showed that the adsorption of lead on chabazite was strong.

In the present work, experiments determined the effect of the order-disorder reaction near the Fe,Al composition on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction of single crystals: A material which is more difficult to magnetize in one direction than in another is anisotropic, that is, the ease with which ferromagnetic materials may be magnetized in different crystallographic directions determines the anisotropy. Two investigators have estimated the anisotropy of the aluminum iron alloys from poly-crystalline data;1,2 however, these estimates should not be considered to be reliable. Siege1 made two accurate measurements of the first anisotropy constant* from single crystals of 4.0 wt pct aluminum sotropy throughout the ferromagnetic aluminum iron system have been described. These results were obtained from single crystals which were slowly cooled and, hence, ordered near the Fe3Al composition.4 Magnetostriction is the change in length per unit length resulting from applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic material. For the purpose of this report, the saturation magnetostriction was measured. This is the maximum change in length per unit length resulting from an applied magnetic field large enough to saturate the material in a given direction. This magnetostriction has been determined for single crystals of the ferromagnetic aluminum-iron system.' The crystals near Fe3Al were also ordered. PREPARATION AND TREATMENT OF SINGLE CRYSTALS Single crystal bars were grown from the melt.' The raw materials for these crystals were iron and aluminum of 99.9 and 99.99 pct purity, respectively.
