Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

"INCO LIMITED'S Shebandowan Mine and Mill is located in a scenic tourist and cottage area near the western tip of Lower Shebandowan Lake, approximately 90 Km west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. This nicely designed complex is a positive indication that mining operations can co-exist in harmony within the natural environment.The Shebandowan complex processed nickel-copper ore from 1973 to 1985, inclusive, after which operations were shut down.In late 1988, INCO LIMITED decided to place the Shebandowan complex back into operation, under contract, to mine and mill the remainder of the ore body, according to their specifications. MaclSAAC'S EXPLORATIONS was the successful bidder for the project. Following preliminary rehabilitation, operations were re-activated in late March, 1989. The ore mined to date is of a moderately lower nickel grade than the majority of previous years. However, a higher tonnage rate, combined with improved nickel recoveries, has contributed to a viable operation.A series of mill operating and equipment modifications has enabled MaclSAAC EXPLORATIONS to achieve the quality and grade of nickel-copper concentrates specified, and at the same time, expand mill tonnage throughput while attaining increased nickel recovenes."

INTRODUCTION The plate loading test is a simple, useful tool in rock mechanics. The test consists of applying load to a rock surface and noting the resulting deflections. Plate loading tests are typically used to obtain modulus of deformation and related material properties, but can also provide information on blast damage and in situ stresses (1). Properties obtained are of course dependent on test procedure and test environment . In order to eliminate extraneous results it is essential that the interrelationship between the physical test environment and various rock properties obtained be thoroughly understood. Test interpretation is based upon elasticity methods, and the general assumptions made during analysis which include the following: 1. The rock is homogeneous, isotropic, elastic and continuous. 2. The stress is induced in a semi-infinite solid. 3. The plate is perfectly rigid or completely flexible. 4. Rock properties are independent of in situ stresses. 5. The plate and rock surface are smooth and parallel.

The mechanics of the continuous sintering process are briefly reviewed and the application of this process for the beneficiation of principal minerals used in making cement is shown. Pilot plant tests using pyrobeneficiation techniques were conducted with mixtures of limestone and shale in various ratios. Results are illustrated and show the percentage removal of carbon, carbonates, sulfur, alkalies, and volatiles as a function of the limestone-shale ratio. Tests with varying quantities of solid fwls, added to mixtures containing limestone and shale in a 4 to 1 ratio, were made to attain optimum elimination of the volatile constituents. Experimental results show that 90 pct of these constituents were removed during the calcination sintem'ng process. The advantages of using the beneficiated material for making cement are discussed with regard to prepam'ng, handling, and clinkering operations. A sintering process for treating raw materials or kiln waste products which contain high amounts of alkaline materials is described. Tests were performed with a high alkaline waste dust mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with raw cement meal. The data from these tests and others using different halides for aiding alkali removal are evaluated by the alkali content of the cement clinker. Test results showed that the Dwight-Lloyd process could be applied with facility in beneficiating raw materials for cement making. Substantial quantities of deleterious volutile constituents were removed by calcining and sintering techniques. The continuous sintering process has been applied for a number of years as a means of beneficiating minerals for subsequent conversion to merchantable products. The process was developed and first used for nonferrous metallurgical applicatfons. However, it has risen to prominence for ferrous metallurgical applications where last year in the U.S. and Canada nearly 40 million tons of iron ore were treated by grate firing processes. Through the years of process development many investigators have realized the versatility of the sintering process and have directed experiments toward the use of it for applications with nonmetallic minerals. These have included calcining limestone, carbonizing coal, expanding shale, and burning cement raw meal. Today commercial sintering plants produce cement clinker from mixtures of limestone and shale, lightweight aggregate from shale or clay, and calcined products from phosphate shale. The mechanics of the downdraft sintering process have been presented by many authors. In general practice the materials to be agglomated are mixed as moistened fines with a solid fuel and this mixture is spread uniformly on the grates of the sintering machine. The charge is then momentarily directed under an ignition furnace. After ignition a continuous downdraft of air promotes combustion of the fuel and through heat transfer particles become partially fused into a coherent mass. This is cooled from continued draft induced after combustion. Many investigators have shown that distinct zones are formed during the process of sintering iron ores. At the midway point of the sintering process these are prominent and are, respectively, from the top of the bed to the bottom, comprised of a cooling zone of sintered material, a combustion zone of sinter formation, a calcination zone, a drying zone, and a zone of unreacted materials. Completion of sintering occurs near the discharge end of the machine where the firing zone approaches either the grates or grate dressing material called hearth layer. Here the peak draft temperature usually can be noted in the windboxes. The zonal pattern has been illustrated with the use of graphs which show thermal gradients as they progress through the bed of materials during sintering. Fig. 1 shows, in simplified form, thermal gradients existing when clinkering cement on a sintering machine. The thermal gradients illustrated are for periods of initiation, midway and completion of the clinkering process. Electronic detonators 3 Overview of Electronic Delay Detonator Technology Conventional detonators use pyrotechnic delay elements and the variation of the actual delay periods is at best approximately 1% the nominal delay. The lack of guaranteed precision common to all pyrotechnic systems enhances the likelihood of negative environmental blasting effects.3 For example, take a 500 ms in hole delay. In conventional detonators this means that 95 % of shots fire within 10 ms of the mean. i.e. a window of 20 ms. Taking a fixed interval between shots of 25 ms, with a range of ± 3 ms, a very ragged firing pattern could be expected which in practice would result in non uniform fragmentation.

"Hydraulic rock drilling equipment has been in use at Falconbridge over the past two years in both production and development situations. This paper deals with the experience gained in the application of hydraulic drilling in the company's mines and discusses the benefits and problems encountered during their use. The paper primarily focuses on technical, operating, maintenance and economic aspects of the machines, and does not attempt to compare the performances of different machines from the various manufacturers.IntroductionThe Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited are comprised of five operating mines and two mines under development. All the production comes from underground mines, mostly at depths below 1000 metres. The company, faced with increases in operating costs and difficult mining conditions, has continued to seek solutions with the help of new mining technology.The development of electric-hydraulic drilling machines in Europe had been pursued with great interest and, in 1979, a decision was made to test these machines to prove their technical and economic viability under operating conditions. Since then, a number of electric-hydraulic machines have been evaluated in different situations and currently nine hydraulic machines are being used in the company's various mines. These machines are comprised of two-boom drilling jumbos for development, one-boom machines for longhole drilling and a large-hole-diameter drilling rig for blasthole drilling. One hydraulic jumbo has also been used in a cut-and-fill stope."

Adaptive processing is often related to the mineral composition of the mining block currently processed. The portions of waste, ore and secondary product minerals considered are always positive and typically sum to 100% (i.e. a composition). A typical solution to predict block averages of spatially dependent quantities would be block kriging. However, kriging is based on spatial correlations and it has been repeatedly shown that correlations of compositional data are spurious and blurred by the constant sum constraint. Aitchison (1982) proposed a general solution for compositional problems, based on transforming the compositional data to a set of logarithms of ratios of components, and analysing the transformed scores. The transform is chosen to be invertible to ensure that no information is lost in the process. This methodology avoids spurious correlation problems and ensures coherence between results obtained with different subcompositions. Pawlowsky-Glahn and Olea (2004) adapted the approach for point-support geostatistics, allowing the prediction of point compositions from spatially neighbouring data, without the artefacts induced by standard multivariate cokriging. Unfortunately upscaling the results of this approach with block cokriging is not straightforward, because of the nonlinearity of logratio transforms. Furthermore, we have to consider those nonlinearities created by the dependence on the block composition of extraction efficiency and processing costs of the possible processing choices. This paper proposes a solution for predicting the conditional expectations of the benefit of processing the block with each processing choice using geostatistical simulations of the local values of the composition and the resulting block integrals. The computation for a large number of blocks can be done efficiently using Cholesky decomposition. The approach also allows the calculation of prediction errors for expected compositions and expected benefit at almost no additional computational cost. Such compositional approach is necessary, for example when processing choices depend on proportions of certain minerals after other components have been removed; or if processing alters the composition in a multiplicative way, by partially removing a portion of some components.

For a study of the bonding that occurs in magnetite pellets during oxidation, cubes of magnetite, hematite, and quartz were prepared, each with one surface polished and nearly optically plane. These faces were fired together under pressure and at various temperatures to determine whether bonding would occur. Sections of surfaces that bonded were examined microscopically. An attempt was made to measure the strength effected by this treatment. EARLIER work1,2 has shown that the strength developed by fired magnetite pellets containing silica or silicates is due to three separate effects. Two of these are associated with the formation of slag in the interior of each pellet at temperatures above 1000°C, where the atmosphere is substantially though temporarily neutral. The third is independent of the silica content and is responsible for the development of a hard shell around the pellet during the initial stages of firing, a condition which permits the pellet to assume the increasing load of the overlying burden and prevents extrusion of the slagged and semi-liquid interior. Pellets made from hematite concentrates do not show these effects unless specific additives are incorporated, and it is these differences in behavior which in large part account for the difficulty in producing satisfactory pellets from such concentrates. Elsewhere it has been stated that "the most important factor responsible for the development of strength in fired magnetite pellets containing no additive is the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent."' The object of the investigation reported in the present paper was to study in detail the mechanism described above and to evaluate its contribution to the strength of the fired pellet compared with other possible mechanisms, excluding slag bonding. This was effected by placing together polished faces of two cubes prepared from specific minerals and then heating them under constant pressure at different temperatures both in air and in nitrogen. The materials used were magnetite, hematite, and quartz. The magnetite was coarsely crystalline material from western Montana, the hematite was Itabira ore from Brazil, and the quartz was of optical grade but of unknown origin. A high-grade Lebanon (Pennsylvania) magnetite concentrate was used to prepare briquets for the investigation of bonding strength. Analyses of the iron oxide materials are given in Table I. The specimens for furnace treatment were prepared with a carborundum cut-off wheel, which cut the minerals into cubes approximating % in. along each edge. Care was taken to make the sides as parallel as possible. The edges of the faces to be polished were beveled, and the cubes were mounted in brass rings with sealing wax, this being essential to prevent the specimens from rocking during polishing. To prevent excessive friction, the wax was recessed so that only the brass ring and the face of each specimen would be in contact with the polishing lap. Each specimen was then ground with No. 600 carborundum to produce a level surface before polishing. The Graton-Vanderwilt process was not used for polishing because of the long time required by this method, but several other methods were tried. Cloth laps using levigated alumina or chromium oxide did not produce the desired polish. Satisfactory results were obtained by means of a pitch lap: which was used for all the mineral cubes, with levigated alumina as the polishing medium. The lap was operated in a machine similar to those used in the preparation of single optical surfaces. It was run at low speeds and moderate pressures, and polishing was stopped occasionally to prevent overheating of the lap. A good polish with flat surfaces could be obtained in about 5 min. After polishing the sealing wax was removed either in hot water or in a solvent such as turpentine.

THE gravity magnitudes obtained by means of observations with the Eötvös balance in the field are necessarily resultant or total effects due to all abnormalities of mass distribution, including even the effects due to the ellipticity and rotational motion of the whole earth. Since the object of the survey is to isolate the effects which arise solely from some particular subterranean feature, and to deduce therefrom the configuration and extent of this feature, the first step is to eliminate from the observed effects all those due to "disturbing" (i, e., unwanted) features, whether above or below the surface of the ground. The disturbing features have different characteristics, according to their situation relative to the center of the balance and to the horizontal plane through the foot of the balance, or station point; this diversity was recognized by Eötvös, who divided the total effects into so-called Normal, Terrain, Topographical, Cartographical and Subterranean effects. This classification has been adhered to by most subsequent investigators, but the writer prefers to employ the term "three-dimensional," which really indicates the essential character of the class of effect known as "Subterranean," at any, rate from the standpoint of the computer of effects. Before disturbing effects can be eliminated, the features must be measured up or surveyed, whether by topographical, mining, or boring methods, and then the effects of each feature calculated and subtracted from the total observed effects. After this the problem of interpreting the residual effects will itself necessitate the computation of the assumed feature, or even a series of trial features.

Teamwork is the key to an efficient organization. Cooperation among mining staff members is an obligation owed to the company. The more cooperation the metallurgist receives from underground, the higher milling yield will be, which in turn makes for a greater mine profit. There is no pay for metal left in mill tailings. The metallurgist is not in a position to be of help to either the geologist or mining engineer, but can receive valuable assistance from both. Therefore, the metallurgist must win underground cooperation. The mining engineer is usually interested in geology because of its relation to ore control; in milling because that is where the rock goes. However, any overlapping of interest between geologist and metallurgist is quite remote.

In compliance with the current Russian environmental legis­lation, possible impact of industrial activities on the environment is restricted by acceptable limiting values (maximal allowable concentrations - MAC) of individual chemical substances in the natural environment - water, atmospheric air and soils. These norms have federal status and are valid for the whole territory of Russia. Disposal of the substances, for which no MAC is estab­lished, is forbidden by the law. Many gold mining companies use cyanide in precious metal recovery. This paper overviews the Russian experience in pro­tection of natural water reservoirs from technogenic impact of cyanic technologies. Major toxic compounds, contained in liquid and solid rejects from hydrometallurgical treatment of gold ore using cyanidation, are cyanides (CN), thiocyanates (SCN) and cyanide metal com­plexes. Unlike western classification of various cyanide types, in Russia any inorganic cyanide compounds (simple and in com­plexes with metals), with the exception of iron cyanide com­plexes, are considered toxic and the acceptable limiting value is established for them. MAC is 0.05 mg/I for fish reservoirs and 0.1 mg/I for drinking water. For iron cyanide complexes MAC is 0.15 mg/I for fish reservoirs and 0.25 mg/I for drinking water. Russian norms for thiocyanates are practically as rigid - the acceptable limiting value for them in fish reservoirs is at the level of 0.07mg/l (0.15 mg/I for potassium thiocyanate) and for drinking water - O. lmg/1. Norms for metals are established on the basis of total content regardless of the form in which they are present in water - as cations or complex ions. It should be noted, that in case several toxic compounds of the same limiting value (for cyanides, thiocyanates and base metals the limiting value is toxicological) are present in water. Their allowable concentra­tion is calculated as the sum of actual concentration of each com­pound, divided by the corresponding acceptable limiting value, with the result not to exceed one (compounding effect). Differences in cyanide classification and the necessity to include thiocyanates dictate different analytical methods. This, in a number of cases, results in certain discrepancies in analytical results. Until recently chlorination was used as a basic process of detox­ification of wastewaters. Calcium hypochlorite powder or hypochlorite pulp, prepared of lime milk and chlorine shipped to the plant, were used as a reagent. Chlorination is an efficient method: it allows to completely destroy plain and complex cyanide, in addition to iron complexes, and thiocyanates. A good example of high efficiency chlorination can be found at the Mnogovershinniy mill near the Okhotsk Sea located in the salmon spawning area, for which we designed an automated chlorination plant for tailings dam. Since plant start-up ten years ago, the required concentrations of cyanides and thiocyanates have been kept at the MAC level required by environmental regulatory agen­cies and no harmful affects on ichthyofauna has been reported. One major drawback of chlorination is high cost of the major reagent, as well as secondary contamination of detoxified waters by chlorides. Secondary contamination by chlorides becomes obvious in the course of detoxification of wastewaters of com­plex composition, which require increased reagent consumption. Recent changes in economic conditions in Russia caused the necessity to direct efforts to reduce the costs of precious metals recovery, and in particular, wastewater treatment. We have con­ducted certain work in this direction and obtained positive results. We hope that our experience described below will be of interest to other specialists particularly taking into account the current low gold prices.

The author was invited by "60 Minutes Australia" to provide on-site technical background on cyanide, mining, and the environment, in their investigation of the January 30, 2000, spill at the Aurul gold-recovery site in Baia Mare, Romania. Some remarks on the incident ?and its implications surround a showing of the fourteen-minute telecast. The thrust of the TV reporter was that aspects of the dam implied the owners' use of standards Jess than would have been met for installations in technologically more advanced locations (like Australia). As a result, the public-relations impact is one of embarrassment for the world mining industry.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on reactions of copper sulfide minerals with chlorine in an aqueous system. Selected samples of covellite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, bornite, and pyrite were leached with aqueous chlorine solutions. The mineral samples were sized on to minus 100- plus 325-mesh, individually mixed with precleaned sand and leached in an enclosed percolation column. Each mineral was leached in stages to achieve about 90 percent mineral dissolution. The chlorine leaching solutions were produced by reacting sodium hypochlorite with hydrochloric acid within the closed system. The study showed that when the mineral dissolution was complete, the reaction products (copper, iron, and sulfur) were in their highest oxidation states and a stoichiometric amount of chlorine was consumed. Although elemental sulfur formed as an intermediate product, it was oxidized to sulfate during the leach.

The Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center has as a long-range objective the development of an equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated within the accuracy with which they are known. If this objective is to be realized, a method of calculation must be known. This report gives the principles of the method we use in such problems. A computer program was developed for predicting these properties, including those at the critical point, that is perfectly general and applicable to any equation of state. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, this computer program was used to evaluate thermodynamic properties of a Redlich-Kwong fluid in the two-phase region. Expressions for calculating various thermodynamic functions specific for this particular equation of state are derived. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated. It is shown that for a Redlich-Kwong fluid there are finite discontinuities in (1) the second temperature derivative of the Gibbs free energy or chemical potential at the critical point, (2) the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve with regard to the temperature on passing through the critical point, and (3) the measured heat capacity at constant volume on passing through the critical temperature when the calorimeter is filled to the critical density. It is also shown that the heat of vaporization is infinite for a Redlich-Kwong fluid at absolute zero.

THE economics of fuel oil must be considered in two aspects; viz., fuel oil as one of a number of competitive fuels and fuel oil as a refined product of petroleum. "Fuel Oil" is usually defined as that product of petroleum which is used in furnaces for the generation of heat by simple combustion. It is true that any product of petroleum used in an internal combustion engine is essentially a fuel oil, but such oils are not included in the class known as "Fuel Oil." The route of a new, 4-mile long, electrical transmission line passed through residential neighborhoods and commercial areas of a small town in the South Carolina Coastal Plain. The new line consisted of 54 new poles and a one-mile underground section. Most of the new poles were constructed within 50 ft of existing structures, and in some cases, within 8 ft to 20 ft. A widely-space subsurface exploration consisting of 20 cone penetration test soundings indicated the subsurface conditions along the alignment generally consisted of saturated, loose to medium dense, fine slightly silty to silty sand. The pole foundations consisted of 20 to 30 ft long, prefabricated ?caissons? (essentially an open-end pipe pile with a prefabricated connection system at the top) with diameters of 28 to 56 inches. The steel caissons were installed with vibratory pile hammers. To help prevent damage and defend against possible allegations from nearby property owners, vibration and settlement monitoring was performed during all foundation installation activities. Limited structural condition assessments were also performed before and after foundation installation. For 53 of the 54 foundations, the ground vibrations recorded at distances coincident with the nearest structure locations ranged from 0.05 inches per second to 1.46 inches per second. With consideration of the dominant frequency, the majority of these values were below the commonly used USBM vibration limits. For a foundation installation that was only 8 ft from the nearest structure, a peak particle velocity of 3.06 inches per second was recorded, which exceeded the USBM limits. For all cases, the measured ground surface settlement was negligible (i.e., less than ¾ inch). Several spurious claims alleging vibration-induced damage were made, but the monitoring program provided an adequate defense. One claim involving artwork that fell to the floor during foundation installation at a distance of 8 ft from the house was deemed legitimate.

The Liberty Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina is a curved, cable-stayed, pedestrian bridge with primary support provided by two towers. The bridge is part of the Falls Park redevelopment. The bridge was originally designed to be supported on drilled piers. Alternately, the bridge was supported on a combination of micropiles and anchor piles because of difficult access and subsurface conditions. The use of micropiles and anchor piles led to improved construction scheduling and reduced costs. Micropiles were used to resist compressive loads. Anchor piles were used to resist tensile forces and to eliminate excessive settlement of pile caps into underlying fill during pre-stressing. This paper describes the site history, bridge construction, site and subsurface conditions encountered, and the decisions that led to support of the bridge using micropiles and anchor piles and foundation construction.

In recent years drivage advance rates in the UK have in- creased from 35m per week in the 1980's to 100/150m per week possible today. These extended rates of advance have resulted in an increase in the potential methane, dust and heat generation at the drivage face. In order to disperse this additional pollutant load requires an increase of fresh air at the face. Although advance rates have changed, current auxiliary ventilation practice has not. UK mining law requires that the fresh air must be delivered to within 5m of the face. This has lead to the wide spread use of overlap auxiliary systems, since a pure forcing system set at this distance would lead to excessive airborne dust. UK mining law does not at present consider on-board mounted exhaust scrubber fans to constitute an effective overlap fan within mechanised drivages. In an attempt to determine whether working conditions could be safely and economically improved within mechanised drivages, a series of preliminary full scale gallery trials were con- ducted. A summary of the principal findings of these trials are presented together with an outline of a series of representative CFD simulations, scale model experiments.

The investigations described in this report were undertaken to demonstrate, on a laboratory scale, the possibility of recovering several million pounds of tin plus tungsten contained in stockpiled and currently rejected slags from the Longhorn tin smelter at Texas City, Tex. At the same time, it was anticipated that the treatment procedures developed might be applicable to slags from other tin-smelting operations. Results of the laboratory work show that it is possible, by pyrometallurgical means, to separate the tin and tungsten into products of intermediate grade that may be returned to the smelter circuits for further upgrading. Several methods of treatment were investigated. The methods that proved effective were: Fusion reduction, chloride volatilization, sulfide volatilization, and carbide formation. Over 90 percent of the tin and tungsten could be removed from the slat by any of these methods. Each type of treatment has advantages and disadvantages, and it could not be determined from the small-scale work which method was the more meritorious. Tungsten and (in some types of treatment) tin-bearing products were diluted by iron, the separation of which will require additional studies. Prevention of a portion of the iron from reporting with the tin or tungsten is a distinct advantage and possibility that will require inure laboratory work to develop the needed techniques for its accomplishment. Tin products from single treatments of stag ranged up to 75 percent in tin content but were more generally under 35 percent. Tungsten products were usually under 15 percent; but segregated portions could be selected, at a sacrifice in recovery, that contained up to 50 percent tungstic oxide equivalent.
