Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau's study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds' method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds' method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. FOR a number of years, the Department of Petroleum Economics of The Chase National Bank has been conducting a study of the capital employed in the petroleum industry. The technique followed is that of combining and summarizing the available financial and operating data for a group of thirty representative oil companies, doing about two thirds of the domestic business of the entire industry. This paper presents the results of the findings for the year 1943, and supplements the survey, "Sources, Disposition, and Characteristics of the Capital Employed by Thirty Oil Companies During the Nine-Year Period, 1934-1942," presented before the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on Feb. 24, 1944, and also published as a pamphlet by The Chase National Bank.

Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. Elkem's technologies for the processing of waste materials, dusts, sludges and other residues, are based on the use of their Multi-Purpose Furnace as the primary processing component. The Multi-Purpose Furnace? is an electric slag resistance reduction furnace equipped with a hot media, Modular Freeze Lining and Elkem's proprietary, air tight electrode seals. The oil cooled? freeze lining allows specific heat fluxes 2 to 3 times higher than furnaces lined with conventional refractory. Reduction activities taking place within the furnace are free from the reoxidation potential of infiltrated air as Elkem's electrode seals are positively gas tight. Small quantities of highly concentrated off gas of controlled composition are produced to suit the requirements of downstream processing. The high electrical thermal efficiency achieved by generating heat within the slag itself, combined with the ability to operate at high melting rates and intense power density, makes the Multi-Purpose Furnace 9 an unique implement for the design of furnace products. These characteristics are utilized in the processing example cited, "Elkem's EAF Dust Processing Technology", which combines two proven technologies in an economically feasible system for the recovery of contained metal values from K061 wastes at the same time producing a disposable slag product. The portion of the example dealing with the condensation of zinc was prepared with the assistance of Imperial Smelting Processes, Limited of Bristol, England with whom Elkem has a non- exclusive license.

This is heightened when also working in countries with a developing environmental regulatory framework, small skilled workforce available for recruitment, and minimal infrastructure such as power, roads, and water. There is an increasing realization that social and environmental aspects need to be built into project execution. Giving proper attention to these issues during project development and execution, and maximizing opportunities is an ongoing challenge.

THE Geological Survey was created in 1842 to aid the development of Canada's mineral resources. Although the institution has been in existence for nearly 100 years and has accomplished an immense amount of work, the need for its services remains as great as ever and, indeed, it is difficult to imagine a time when the country will no longer require a Geological Survey. This is so because of the tremendous effort required to make an adequate geological examination of so large an area as is embraced by Canada and partly because what today may seem an adequate geological examination proves, later on, to be inadequate. The ultimate objective of the Geological Survey is to complete the study of all phases of the geology of Canada, that is, to determine how and when the physical features originated, how and when the soils and other unconsolidated deposits were formed, and how and when the solid rocks and associated deposits were produced and assumed their present conditions. When the study has been completed, any only then, will it be possible to make a reliable estimate of the country's mineral resources. This appraisal embraces more than determining the value of already discovered deposits: it also involves attempting to establish what kinds of undiscovered deposits may be present and where they may occur. The estimating of the potential mineral wealth can be clone only after the geology of the country is known. Not until then will it be possible to forecast what types of valued deposits may occur in a district and what types will almost certainly be lacking. A thorough knowledge of the geology of the country is desirable not only to permit estimating the potential mineral resources but also as an aid in locating and developing mineral deposits whether these are of the nature of a bed of limestone, a seam of coal, a reservoir of petroleum, a vein, an irregular body of sulphides, or any other type of deposit.

Reconnaissance radiometric and geochemical data have been obtained for an area on the western shore of Wollaston Lake that includes the Rabbit Lake uranium deposit. The study area is extensively drift cover ed. The geochemical data were obtained by analysis of center-lake sediments and surface waters for a variety of elements and other constituents. The airborne radiometric data comprise measurements of eU, eTh and K obtained with a .50,000-cc NaI (Tl) detector at a mean terrain clearance of 120 m and 5-km flight-line spacing. Uranium in lake sediments and uranium in waters are the most effective geochemical indicators of uranium mineralization; the other elements measured are not notably anomalous. A sample site density of one per 1 8 km 2 is more than adequate for identification of the mineralized area. Because many water samples contain close to or below the current analytical detection limit of 0.05 ppb U, the use of sediments is generally favoured. for broad-scale reconnaissance in the region. Uranium in these lake sediments appears to be little influenced by variations in the organic or iron and manganese content. The most effective radiometric indicator of the mineralization is the eU/eTh ratio. This parameter is less influenced by environmental variation on the ground beneath the flight line than eU alone . The eTh/K ratio is anomalous under the Athabasca Formation unconformity where, in places, the uranium mineralization is localized.

As an alternative to a million dollar, sensor based, computer dispatching system, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has installed a home¬made analog computer. The device is used in conjunction with a standard radio-dispatching system; it is inexpensive and very simple to build and operate. It enables the dispatcher to make near opti¬mum dispatching decisions and to identify all off schedule haulage trucks. Since installation, Cyprus Pima has experienced significant increases in pit productivity.

This paper is a progress report on the study of mining methods and costs in the western United States and summarizes that part of the work pertaining to the undercut block-caving method of mining. Ore is mined on a large scale exclusively by the undercut block-caving method at the following six mines in the western United States: The Morenci branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci, Ariz.; the Ray mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ray, Ariz.; the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. at Inspiration, Ariz.; the Miamo Copper Co. at Miami, Ariz.; the Ruth mine of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ruth, Nev.; and the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation at Kimberly, Nev. The undercut block-caving method is also used at the mine of the Andes Copper Mining Co. at Potrerillos, Chile.

Umiat field contains the largest accumulation of oil discovered so far in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in Arctic Alaska. The Umiat anticline was tested with 11 wells; 6 produced oil in varying quantities. Behavior of the wells during testing was unpredictable. For example, one well was abandoned as a dry hole after all tests failed to recover any oil, yet an offset well, only 200 feet from the dry hole, produced 400 barrels of oil a day. The main oil reservoirs are less than 1,000 feet deep and are in the permanently frozen zone (permafrost). Reservoir pressures are low, and most primary production will be by expansion of gas-in-solution in the oil. Because of the unusual reservoir conditions and the difficulties encountered in drilling and completing the wells, the Department of the Navy asked the Federal Bureau of Mines to make laboratory studies of the reservoir sand to determine the cause of well plugging and to provide laboratory information, to be used as an aid in estimating oil recovery from frozen reservoir rocks under solution-gas expansion from low-saturation pressure conditions.

In September 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company, started development of the Mount; Fright iron ore mine. The estimated ore reserve is in excess of 1,000,000,000 long tons with an average grade of 31.5% Fe. The run of mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production rate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material of which 50% is waste. The mine is located in the Province of Quebec, close to the Labrador border approximately 600 miles north-east of Montreal. The development of the mine necessitated the construction of an all electric one thousand housing unit townsite along with associated services such as a shopping center, swimming pool, arena, school, etc... A one-hundred mile long, 315 K.V. Dower line was built between the mine site and the Hydro-Quebec 735 K.V. existing power line between Churchill Falls and the Montreal area. The construction near the mine of a beneficiation plant was necessary to upgrade the 31.5% iron ore to a marketable product of 66% iron.

Steelmakers worldwide agree that the most efficient and cost-effective solution in BOF steelmaking is to desulfurize the hot metal between the blast furnace and converter. Various methods are currently in use, among which the Kanbara Reactor (KR, using only lime as a reagent), Magnesium mono-injection (MMI, using only magnesium; also known as the Ukraina-Desmag process) and co-injection (using magnesium and lime/CaC2) are leading. These three hot metal desulfurization methods are compared based on metallurgy, efficiency, costs and overall performance. Both available data from literature and experience from Danieli Corus engineers is used for this study. The KR process is able to reach low sulfur concentrations (> 10 ppm) in hot metal and has lower reagent costs. However, due to higher Fe-loss and heavy wear the KR process has the highest operational costs. The Magnesium mono-injection process is very fast due to the use of the reactive magnesium as reagent. Major problems with resulfurization (sulfur levels below 50 ppm cannot be reached) and the violence of the process made that this process could never get a firm foothold in the western steel industry. The co-injection process with magnesium and lime proves to be able to combine the best of both worlds. It can reach low sulfur concentrations and desulfurize fast. Co-injection is also the most flexible and cost effective.

For material or process development as well as for quality checking of materials, thermal diffusivity measurement may be the tool of choice in many applications. Especially if diffusivity is measured locally resolved, a lot of information can be read out of such a ?diffusivity image?. This paper explains the method to measure coplanar specimen like plates and lists some interpretations of diffusivity images, like inhomogeneity of sintered materials, structural voids or inclusions. Diffusivity is a material property, describing transportation of heat in solids in spatial and temporal terms. With thermo cameras it is possible, to measure diffusivity of larger areas simultaneously. The result is an area of diffusivity values that may be plotted or displayed like an image. Locations with lower diffusivity values could be caused by the presents of structural differences in the material, by decomposition of the material components or by inclusions of other material like air.

Often geometallurgical models are prepared at various project stages from very few data and are assumed to be representative of very large tonnages. These may include recovery models; crushing and grinding parameters and models; models of concentrate grades; models of acid consumption; etc. These models commonly do not carry a measure of uncertainty or variability, and are taken at face value at the time of design and planning. This paper proposes a proactive approach to modelling variability, providing uncertainty estimates and thus allowing for risk analysis and mitigation of geometallurgical models. The variability model is built up by understanding the limitations of the pillars of a geometallurgical model: data uncertainty; geologic model uncertainty; domain definition uncertainty; and parameter estimation uncertainty. Of these factors, typically domain definition is the most significant contributor to geometallurgical model variability. First, the fundamental supports for these models are briefly discussed, with domain definition emphasized. Second, two methods for uncertainty modelling are proposed. The first, more applicable to conceptual or early-stage projects, is a simpler and more expedient alternative that provides initial assessments of variability. This is intended to aid management in decision-making related to budgeting, including further sampling and testing. The second, a block-by-block approach that allows a detailed assessment of risk for specific designs and mine plans, thus providing further opportunities for mitigation. In the example provided, emphasis is placed in communicating this variability to both management and technical personnel in the form of “measured-indicated-inferred” indicators and also block-by-block confidence intervals.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

"IntroductionMechanization underground at the Buffalo Ankerite mine in Deloro township, Porcupine district, had reached a high level by 1944, both in equipment available, and in the use of this equipment, for all stoping operations. Power feed leyners and the latest type of stopers for drilling, slushers for moving ore and fill, and tugger hoists for all servicing, did much to halt rising stope costs, and in some cases decreased them. On the other hand, little beyond the use of mucking machines and power feed leyners had been adopted in the effort to reduce level development costs, or to increase the advance per man-shift.Faced with ever increasing level development costs, caused by rising prices of equipment and supplies, coupled with increasing wage demands for less physical effort, it was realized that more mechanization of development work was essential. The objectives of such further mechanization were:(1) Decreased development costs(2) Increased footage per man-shift(3) Less physical effort by development crews, with greater take-home pay (4) A more satisfied and stable labour force"

As the world progresses toward the renewable energy transition, the demand for minerals increases exponentially. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2021 Net Zero by 2050 Report, critical mineral production needs to grow six times to combat climate change. It’s estimated that four to seven percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the mining sector’s Scope 1 and 2 (direct and indirect) emissions. Including Scope 3 (upstream, downstream, and embedded) emissions, the sector accounts for 28% of global GHG emissions. In a typical mining operation, diesel fuel is the biggest source of direct GHG emissions, and haulage is often the main source of diesel emissions. Large haul trucks have been the industry standard for over 50 years and offer flexibility, relatively low capital cost (especially with equipment lease options), and guaranteed technology with known maintenance. The challenge will be to justify their continued use when there are more economical options that lead to significant reductions in GHG emissions. The purpose of this study is to compare five haulage options in terms of GHG emissions, using the methodology defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scopes 1, 2, and 3 (Category 2). Additionally, this analysis compares operating and capital costs associated with the five haulage options (emerging and proven technologies): 1) Diesel-Electric Haul Trucks, 2) Battery-Electric Haul Trucks, 3) Fuel Cell Haul Trucks, 4) Railveyor, and 5) Conveyor. This analysis looks at the emissions and costs associated with operating the equipment (fuel and electricity), the embedded emissions and costs associated with the construction and installation of the equipment itself, and the associated infrastructure (roads, powerlines, and rail).

Introduction Situated 182 miles east of Vancouver, on the Kettle Valley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, the Princeton coal field is readily accessible to the Coast markets. The area covers approximately forty square miles and present indications are that the deposits should contain at least 300,000,000 tons of coal. Comparatively little development has yet taken place in this coal field. Since the commencement of recorded output, the collieries operating in this area have produced 1,640,518 tons of coal. The coal field proper includes only the Tertiary deposits adjacent to the town of Princeton and does not include the Coalmont or Nicola deposits. Production has never been on a large scale. The largest annual output from any property was 81, 780 long tons mined at the Granby colliery in 1940. Coal output was first recorded in 1909 and since that time fifteen properties are reported to have either mined coal or to have done prospecting or development work; of these, only two are presently active. However, none of the properties now inactive were closed because their coal resources were exhausted. The accompanying key map shows the extent of the Princeton coal field, and the location of the coal mines and prospects in this field General Geology The Princeton field is underlain by rocks of Oligocene age and is one of the series of more or less isolated Tertiary lake basins in which coal, or lignite, has been found in the interior of British Columbia. Resting on the Nicola group rocks of Triassic age, the Princeton sedimentaries consist of sandstones, conglomerates, shales, bentonite, bentonitic clays, and several seams of coal. Tertiary volcanics occur both above and below the stratified rocks and in places they have been thrust through the overlying measures. In some areas, the coal has been burned to a red ash as the result of vulcanism, while in other parts some of the moisture has been driven from the coal, thus improving the grade. The field can best be described by dividing it into two areas: the Southern area, lying to the south of the town of Princeton, where most of the mining has been done; and the Northern area, to the north of Princeton, where very little development has taken place.
