This session has been organized to suggest to you that the development of direct reduction is important to the iron ore mining and coal mining industries. The papers presented this morning will include a discussion of the costs of making direct reduced iron (DRI), the iron ore and coal supplies needed to produce DRI, the financing of direct reduction (DR) projects and, probably most important, the impact of the DR development on the iron ore and coal industries. For starters, this opening presentation offers a brief statement about DR practice and DRI, under the title that should surprise no one: "Direct Reduction: What Is It?" There is always the chance? that a brief statement may become long and complicated. But, by mixing some slides borrowed from Hal Lownie with a larger number of photographs accumulated from other sources, I hope to avoid such pitfalls.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe safety and efficacy of permissible storage—battery gathering locomotives are becoming recognized more and more in coal mines. The great mobility of this type of haulage equipment is due to the fact that no trolley wire and bonding of rails are needed; hence wherever there is track and adequate ventilation to dilute properly any dangerous gases, the storage—battery gathering locomotive may go. As coal near the outcrop or the surface is mined out, coal farther from the outcrop or deeper in the ground must be mined, and gassiness of the coal bed often increases under these conditions. The use of electrical equip¬ment capable of giving off arcs or sparks while operating near or at the coal faces constitutes a serious explosion hazard. Often, it is uneconomical or impracticable to use animal haulage, and locomotives must be employed. The operator should consider the safest and most economical unit; permissible equipment is the answer to this problem, and storage—battery locomotives are the only permissible electric haulage units.A comparison of permissible storage—battery locomotives with cable—reel locomotives of the latest enclosed ""explosion—tested"" type has been made at the Keystone No. 1 mine of the Houston Collieries Co., at Keys one, W. Va. The information and data contained in this publication were obtained by the writer during an inspection of haulage at this mine.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer is indebted to P. C. The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied the locations and general features of 90 pegmatites found in north-central New Mexico. The dominant valuable product of the pegmatites is muscovite, both sheet and scrap. However, the Harding pegmatite in Taos County is mined only for beryl. Many attempts have been made to recover scrap mica on a large scale by mechanical beneficiation of pegmatite, but the operations heretofore have been short-lived. The Globe mine and the Apache mine, both near Petaca in Rio Arriba County, have been the most important sources of sheet mica in New Mexico. Recognition of the growing need for some of the minerals derived from pegmatites led the Bureau of Mines to investigate the occurrences of pegmatite.

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

Hydrometallurgical oxidation of sulphides is capital and energy intensive, with autoclave and bio-technology competing for lowest overall cost status. The use of surface aerators instead of stirred tank reactors could provide lower costs for bio-oxidation of concentrates. With this in mind, the Delft Inclined Plate reactor was designed with inclined plates above a settler shaped reactor to continuously return slurry from the lowest point in the settler to the surface of the liquid. The multiplate superstructure overcomes the scale-up restriction of the standard circular surface aeration patterns. DIP aerator energy and volume requirements for oxygen transfer from air will be presented in terms of kg O2/kWh and kg O2/m3/h transferred as a function of wt % sand in the slurry and compared to stirred tank performance. Scale up from the 4 m3 pilot unit will be discussed.

"High-temperature superconductors have potential for a variety of applications such as power generators, superconducting magnets for mine sweepers or ship propulsion motors, and magnetic levitation transportation systems. Interest in the use of superconducting wires and tapes increased dramatically after the discovery of high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) oxide superconducting compounds, which offer operating temperatures above that of liquid nitrogen. Several techniques have been proposed to produce commercially viable high-Tc oxide based superconducting wires. One of the promising methods involves multi-pass powder-in-tube (PIT) wire drawing followed by rolling and heat treatment. This work focuses on the development of a numerical model to simulate the PIT drawing process for fabrication of long lengths of silver sheathed Bi-2212 superconducting wires. The finite element based model was used to predict densification of the oxide powder, wire drawing forces, and silver sheath thickness during drawing. A cap-type pressure dependent constitutive equation was implemented in the model to simulate the powder behavior. The model incorporated experimentally obtained material data for the silver and powder. Results indicate that powder densification is increased by decreasing the initial silver thickness and increasing the silver strength. Data from wire drawing experiments were used to verify model predictions. IntroductionSuperconducting wires and tapes can be used to carry large dc currents with no measurable loss due to resistivity. When used in superconducting magnets for power generators, motors, levitation devices, magnetic detectors, or energy storage devices, they could potentially result in significantly reduced energy losses. In the past, most prototypes were tested in liquid helium at 4.2K [1]. However, the necessity to provide liquid-helium cooling systems proved to be a serious limitation in commercialization. In 1986 high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) oxide superconductors were discovered [2], which could allow for higher operating temperatures above liquid nitrogen (77 K). Since then, both academia and industry have concentrated their efforts on the development of high-Tc oxide superconducting wires, tapes and coils. As yet, large scale fabrication of long lengths of these wires with the required current carrying capacity and mechanical properties remains an enormous challenge."

MANY producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. OVERCOMING DEFECTS IN COKE FROM COLORADO COALS Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during he Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Pocahontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-volatile coal was developed through low-temperature carbonization-or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatilization-of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

The Mining Engineering Department at Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) has a new Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved program for Part 46 and Part 48 mine health and safety training. The training program will utilize the facilities and faculty from Montana Tech’s Mining Engineering and Safety, Health, and Industrial Hygiene departments to provide superior mine health and safety training to the mining industry. The faculty of each department includes professionals with experience in safety training and the mining industry. The training program incorporates adult learning techniques and extensive hands-on activities in all training modules. The instruction will exceed MSHA requirements. The resources available on Montana Tech’s campus will be utilized to strengthen the training program providing the mining industry with a world class mine health and safety training program.

Many years of research on more effective and safer explosives have led to the development of emulsion explosives. They are the second most commonly used group of explosives worldwide, primarily because they are good alternatives to ANFO or dynamites. Their key advantage in underground applications is the lower content of toxic fumes in the detonation products. Emulsions are also characterized by high detonation velocity, high water resistance, low critical diameter, and mechanical loading capacity. Several factors affect the behavior of emulsion explosives. These factors are related to both manufacturing and applied mining methods. The most important factors include the charge diameter, type of sensitizer, density, hydrostatic pressure, ambient and charge temperatures, as well as the time elapsed between the charging of the explosive into the blast hole and its detonation. The selection of the type of explosive is based on the analysis of a number of parameters, including the density, critical diameter, volume of the post-blast fumes, detonation pressure, velocity of detonation, and sensitivity to external energy sources. In most cases, the conditions under which explosives are used differ significantly from those defined in standards. Such conditions cover, among others, the temperature of the rock mass and surroundings, humidity, rock strength parameters and the diameter of the blast holes. Consequently, the parameters of the explosives provided by the manufacturers may not correlate with those specified in-situ. Thus, within the framework of this study, the effects of the selected technological parameters on the detonation velocity of bulk emulsion explosives are presented. The analysis focused primarily on the factors directly influenced by the mine blasting services. The detonation velocity measured using the continuous wire resistance technique was used as the evaluation criterion. For this purpose, several underground in-situ tests were conducted, including the impact of the blast hole diameter, density, initiation method, sleeping time, and temperature on the detonation velocity. The results of in-situ tests have shown that the detonation velocity of bulk emulsion explosives depends strongly on the above factors, which may directly affect the effectiveness of blasting operations.

Non-electric systems, specifically shock tube, have become the pyrotechnic detonator of choice over electric due to their safety regarding accidental initiation from stray radio signals. Typically, the best practice when hooking up shock tube systems is to have direct contact to ensure initiation. When gaps are introduced to the explosives chain, there is potential for detonation to come to a halt. It is understood that direct coupling is required between the various elements in the explosive chain to ensure detonation. This holds true whether tying in non-electric detonators, loading holes in a mining related blast, or priming a block of C-4. Poor contact and gaps in the explosives chain can lead to detonators firing out sequence, leading to increased vibration, air overpressure, and other undesirable blast results. Furthering work conducted in previous experimentation, a new study was conducted at the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Experimental Mine in Rolla, Missouri to observe the initiation potential of an air gap and fragmentation on non-electric shock tube. A series of small test blasts were conducted using 50 grain detonating cord and fragments from a blasting cap to initiate a non-electric shock tube across an air gap of varying distances. The data collected in the high-speed imagery was used to analyze the velocity of the pressure fronts and blasting cap fragments used to initiate non-electric shock tubes across an air gap. It was found that the shock tube was sensitive to 50 grain det cord at a 5cm (1.97in) distance while parallel and 10cm (3.94in) when perpendicular as well as sensitive to frag from the electric cap out to 2.4m (7.87ft).

The full realization of the potential of computers in geological in- formation system demands new approaches to the machine representation of information. At the same time, the feasibility of such a system, particularly in commercial field, demands greater freedom in input preparation and a degree of standardization in the arrangement of subject matter system. The paper describes some of the basic notions of project "GEOSEMANTICA 70". The aim of the project is to devise means of storing real geological informations in a machine rather than the representation of the information in human language form. This is seen as the only long-term solution to the problems of the complex vocabulary of geology and the complex syntax of geological description. Effectively, a machine language is being defined, consisting of a set of symbols and a date structure for representation of geological and related information. Beyond this, is the definition of a set of rules allowing the use of constrained text as an input/output medium. The investigation is oriented primarily to the representation and handling of information about mineral deposits and the associated geographic, economic and engineering information.

Among all gravity concentration methods, Shaking-table is the most effective one from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, Shaking-table was used for concentrating a manganese ore sample from Ghasem Abad area in Kerman, Iran. Experiments were designed by using L8Taguchi design with five variables and each variable in two levels. The influence of each variable and their interactions on the operation of the device was studied. The variables under investigation were: table slope, table frequency, water flowrate, feed rate, and particle size. The manganese concentrate grade and recovery were used as response variables. It was shown that water flowrate, table slope, feed rate, and particle size are the significant variable on concentrate grade; while, all the variables influence manganese recovery.

The 1988 shift in primary smelting facilities from low grade matte (35%) reverberatory furnaces to high grade matte (63%) flash smelting heavily impacted a very stable and successful converter operation. Low matte grade converter campaigns averaged 36,000 short tons of copper and revert production/consumption was in balance. The conversion to high matte grades necessitated oxygen enrichment of converter blast and revisions in operating practices. After two years of operational development, campaign life has risen to over 40,000 short tons and revert production/consumption is again in balance.

Magnetic metals are the granddaddy of products which may be recovered from municipal waste. Aside from hand-picking of newsprint and corrugated boxes, magnetic metals are usually the first items a resource recovery facility considers extracting from the solid waste stream. Magnetic metals from incinerator residues and from municipally mandated source segregation programs were first used in significant quantities by the Copper Industry. The ability of the Copper Industry to consume metals from the municipal solid waste stream raised everyone's hopes that there would be more markets for municipal scrap when more of it became available. Somehow something has gone wrong. It is widely acclaimed that scrap is an environmentally sound and economical source of iron. It is greatly in demand for Its contained energy. The prices that the steel industry has been willing to pay for the scrap during the past year are all the proof anyone should need that scrap Is desirable and sought after. But the very fact that I'm speaking today on the markets for magnetic metals recovered from municipal waste indicates that something Is wrong. Clearly the problem is not that we do not need the scrap. The problem is we have not produced the kind of scrap that consumers are willing to buy - either through ignorance of what the consumers wanted or through a conviction that ferrous scrap is so obviously a good thing somebody will surely want it no matter what. Dr. Harvey Alter of the National Center for Resource Recovery has said "You can't sell garbage". In a sense that is only partly true. It really should be "You can't sell garbage for very long". The Steel Companies, in an effort to prove that steel is an environmentally desirable packaging medium, have bought some scrap that can only be described as garbage. They are to be commended for doing so. The fault lies not with the Steel Company for taking and paying for "garbage" but with the producer of that poorly prepared scrap. Far every instance where the steel industry has purchased the often undesirable product from resource recovery facility there are several magnetic installations sitting Idle because someone forgot the most essential part of producing the magnetic product - selling it to someone.

"IntroductionMinerals may be classed broadly as ferromagnetic (magnetite for example), as paramagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field convergence) and as diamagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field divergence). High-intensity separators are not necessary to separate ferromagnetic minerals from other classes. Rather, low-intensity units that generate fields below 5000 gauss are adequate for this purpose. However, paramagnetic minerals, such as ilmenite, with high magnetic ""attractability"" require fields of up to 10 000 gauss; those with low attractability may require even higher fields. Table 1 shows approximate ranges of field intensities necessary to separate ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals from minerals of lower attractability, along with the force with which they are attracted relative to iron in a standardized magnetic field.Uniform magnetic fields, not useful for separators, are generated between flat parallel surfaces; non-uniform fields, useful for separators, arise when at least one of the surfaces is of irregular shape. The diagrams below show how magnetic lines of force align relative to north and south poles.If a particle is placed in a uniform field, it feels no displacing force unless the particle distorts the applied field assymmetrically. This is not the case in non-uniform fields which are required for magnetic separators.Magnetic fields can be generated by permanent magnets (low intensity), by electromagnets (medium and high intensity) and even by superconducting coils (100 000 gauss fields and higher), although the latter are not as yet useful in production environments .The magnetic force of attraction per unit of mass, that acts on a paramagnetic mineral such as hematite, increases in proportion to the strength of the field . Unfortunately, the highest fields attainable with electromagnets is of the order of 20 000 gauss. Fortunately, the gradient of the fie ld (that is, the degree of convergence of magnetic lines of force) is important, because the attractive force per unit mass is proportional to it also . Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. In order to reduce cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, retrofit acoustic treatments and controls are being developed to subdue noise at the source. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2005 has determined that continuous mining machines rank first among all mining equipment whose operators exceed 100% noise dosage. The continuous mining machine conveyor, used to move coal from the cutting face to the rear of the machine, has been identified as a dominant noise source. A dual sprocket conveyor chain was tested as a potential solution. Sound power level measurements conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) accredited reverberation chamber showed a 3 dB reduction in the A-weighted sound power level when the dual sprocket chain was implemented. Underground results show an 8-hour Time Weighted Average (TWA8 hrs) reduction a 3 dB for continuous mining machine operators. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, provides continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. Alan Oshiki (AO) is executive vice president with the Abernathy MacGregor Group. Henry Weingarten (HW) is managing director with the Astrologers Fund Inc. Here is what they had to say.

A brief description of the mining method and ventilation system of the San Manuel Mine?s first presented; this is necessary to an understanding of the heat problem and cooling system. The problem of heat at San Manuel is discussed. Charts and graphs showing the relationships between ambient surface air and underground temperature conditions are given. A history of attempts to cool air at San Manuel is presented, starting with the first refrigeration type air coolers which were used in development headings, and followed by the underground water chillers that were used in conjunction with cooling coils. Goals for design of a centralized cooling system with ultimate heat rejection through surface cooling towers are presented. The problems found with using the centralized system in main cooling coils are discussed. Plans for modification of the centralized system as utilized is the summer of 1987 are given, along with results obtained and problems with the system. Plans for subsequent modifications are presented.

This Bureau of Mines report is a study of the organizational framework of the ferrous scrap industry, of the products produced, and of the factors affecting the consumption of ferrous scrap by the steel industry. Consumption data from 27 major iron and steel firms in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin during the period between 1957 to 1962 were grouped by type of iron and steel furnace production facilities to determine consumption pattern for various grades of scrap in comparison to ingot production, hot metal consumption, and home scrap generation. Grades of scrap affected by changes in scrap consumption were determined, and the pattern that emerged was analyzed. Correlation of scrap demand and its effects on scrap prices based on price of scrap receipts of No. 1 heavy melting scrap and No. 2 bundles in the Chicago area for the years 1957 through 1962 indicated that demand trends do not always affect the price of scrap, Past and present technological advancements in steelmaking processes are discussed, and their effects on the scrap industry are analyzed.
