The purpose of this paper is to outline the advantages and disadvantages of single tube and twin tubes for subway systems. Different aspects such as diameter of the tunnel (tunnel spaceproofing), configuration of subway line and stations, impacts on passenger safety and evacuation, ventilation system as well as rail system for each solution were evaluated and compared. In addition, a multi-criterion approach is established to facilitate the decision making for these two different subway systems. The practical example of a mega project has been discussed and the details of the decision-making process has been explained. This proposed multicriterion can be used to facilitate selecting the best subway system in any urban areas.

Despite further declines in production for some producers, 1986 proved to be a landmark year for the asbestos industry. The key event was the adoption of The Asbestos Convention by the Inter- national Labour Organization (ILO) and its 150 member countries. The document, entitled "Safety in the Use of Asbestos", reaffirms the international consensus on the "controlled-use" approach to chrysotile asbestos regulation. The decision of the ILO has come at a critical point in time. It represents a major turning point and provides an important building block for the long term future of the asbestos industry.

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutionsÆ funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industryÆs concept of the unwritten æsocial licence to operateÆ is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

ISO 9000 is a system of quality standards that originated in Europe in the 1980s and has since been widely adopted by manufacturing companies throughout the world. The ISO 9000 standards have received less attention in the minerals industry. But, in part as a result of customer pressure, a trend is beginning to emerge for minerals producers to seek ISO certification. This is especially true among producers of industrial minerals. In early October 1994, SME's Industrial Minerals Division held a conference "ISO 9000 - uniting industrial mineral producers and consumers into quality partnerships," in Nashville, TN to bring people from the industry together to talk about their experiences with ISO 9000. William J. Miles, of Bentonite Corp. Inc., and A. Frank Alsobrook, of Alsobrook and Co., were cochairmen of the meeting. In his introductory remarks, Miles noted, "ISO 9000 is more than a quality program. It is a quality philosophy. Appropriately imple-mented, it is a contract between the supplier and the customer. It leads to continuous quality improvement and reduced manufacturing costs."

Gold extraction has relied on coconut carbon in adsorption circuits for several decades. IXOS®, invented by 6th Wave Innovations of Salt Lake City, Utah, is a new type of adsorbent that exceeds the selectivity of carbon and improves on the mechanical properties of other available resins. IXOS selectivity against copper cyanide complexes allows it to be used in circuits that currently struggle with copper contamination. IXOS potential to eliminate or reduce the application of SART technology will expand the opportunities to exploit more complex precious metals deposits. This paper will describe the technology behind IXOS molecular imprint, its comparison to carbon adsorption in the field, and the effect of efficiency on long-term recovery from heap leach METSIM simulation software.

Two methods were devised and evaluated for quantitatively measuring the amount of oleic acid on flotation products and in flotation waters. One method involved use of an organic solvent to remove carbon-l4-tagged oleic acid from mineral surfaces and flotation water phases with subsequent radio-metric analysis of the extracts. Studies showed this method to be slow and subject to large variations in accuracy and reproducibility. In the second procedure, tagged oleic acid was measured directly on the surfaces of dried mineral products. Oleic acid in the water phase was determined by adsorbing it on fine mineral, drying, and radiometric counting. Quantitative analysis of oleic acid on flotation products from bench-scale flotation tests with synthetic mixtures of ore minerals and quartz and with natural ores showed this method to be fast, accurate, and reproducible.

Mine workers using diesel-powered equipment experience the highest occupational exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM). This problem could be aggravated in underground stone mines due to their unique ventilation challenges with the large openings for airflow. Hence, adequate ventilation in these mines requires a combination of effective ventilation planning and delivering needed air quantities using auxiliary fans and stoppings. To meet this challenge, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE) software as a mine planning tool to help underground mine operators estimate the air requirements necessary to dilute DPM in the main air stream to statutory levels. The major parameters required for the calculations are the engine’s horsepower, DPM emission rate, the percentage operating time, catalytic converter efficiency, and filter efficiency. In efforts to provide major updates to this software, this study describes the recent development of a revised version of the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE 2.0). With the revised version, users have access to a comprehensive database of over 40,000 pieces of equipment, can define their specific target DPM level, and can create specific equipment for a customized database, in addition to having an improved easy-to-use interface. The software output provides an estimated total airflow necessary to dilute DPM based on the projected emissions, and the user can generate a related results report. The results also provide the mine personnel with a tool to identify vehicles that are high DPM contributors and could further be used to optimize the ventilation requirement by making changes to the percentage operating time of the engine. This software provides the mine with a user-friendly tool that could help reduce the DPM exposure of workers.

EVERY producer of crude oil knows what is meant by the Rule or Law of Capture. It means that the ultimate ownership of a migratory substance such as oil is not determined until that substance is reduced to physical possession. Unless, therefore, the producer moves quickly to capture his share from the common pool, he may lose to any neighbor who is drilling and producing more rapidly than he a portion of the oil originally underlying his property. And there is no recourse open to him if his property is so drained. Under this rule it is obvious that the owner of an oil property, if he is to protect his' ownership, must be governed in his development and production policies by the activities of his neighbor rather than by his own business requirements. He must drill as densely and as fast as the other operators in the field or lose part of the oil to which he should be entitled.

ONE of a series, this report is concerned with the experimental documentation of the deformation behavior of pure metals over a wide range of temperature. Previous reports in the series describe the creep behavior of platinum1 and aluminum2 and the tensile behavior of copper,&apos; silver,& and molybdenum.5 Subsequent reports will describe the creep behavior of copper and silver and the tensile behavior of platinum, thus providing extensive creep and tensile data on four face-centered-cubic metals tested under comparable conditions. Material Two lots of high-purity aluminum were used in this investigation. One lot, designated AC, was obtained direct from the Aluminum Co. of America as high-purity aluminum in notch-bar form. A typical analysis of this type of aluminum is 0.006 pct Si, 0.015 pct Cu, 0.006 pct Fe, and 99.975 pct Al. Lot BS was obtained from J. I. Hoffman of the Bureau of Standards as a portion of the Aluminum A described in his report of the redetermination of the atomic weight of aluminum.6 Lot BS originated with the Aluminum Co. of America also, and was received in the standard notch-bar form. A detailed chemical and spectroscopic analysis of lot BS has been published.6 Principa1 impurities were 0.006 pct Si, 0.003 pct Fe, 0.002 pct Cu, and >99.987 pct Al. Samples were processed identically by room-temperature swaging and drawing to 0.030 in. diam wires from approximately ½ in. diam rods that were machined from the notch-bar pigs. Samples were cut from the cold-drawn wire, placed in a grooved graphite block in groups of thirteen, and annealed in air for 1 hr at each of several temperatures, with the results shown in Table I. The two lots of aluminum responded quite differently to annealing, the behavior of aluminum AC suggesting that its grain growth was controlled by impurities. The recrystallization texture of aluminum of similar purity comparably treated has been reported as predominantly <111> fiber with some <100> fiber present.7 Testing Procedure The testing procedure and method of analyzing the data have been described previously.2,3 Annealed specimens of 5 in. gage length were tested in an Instron tensile testing machine at a constant head motion corresponding to a strain rate of 0.04 min-&apos; at a number of temperatures. "2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

"Compagnie Miniere Esperance operates a gold primary ore body. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity concentration generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analyses of the tailings proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment.As lab tests proved the technical feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation, an on-site pilot operation has been carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for the industrial circuit sizing.Data collected during the pilot campaign have been used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM™ PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain a good fine gold recovery in a small amount of concentrate. A preliminary capital cost has been achieved to assess the flotation workshop profitability.INTRODUCTIONCompagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. Although uranium deposits in northern Saskatchewan are clustered around the Athabasca basin, basement lithostructure determines their distribution. Basal Wollaston Group pelites are invariably graphitic and carry uraninite in felsic segregations and biotitic pegmatite. Where these intersect the Athabasca Formation, remobilized uranium concentrated as pitchblende. Uranium is also concentrated in silicified and hematized sandstone where the Athabasca Formation overlies post-orogenic faults. Presumably, pregnant solutions associated with the fault were stripped of their metals as they emerged into the contrasting physico-chemical environment of the sandstone basin. Both these types of mineralization correlate with a Grenvillian (-1,000 m.y.) heating event and associated diabase intrusions. However, the rich pitchblende veins at Uranium City appear to predate the Athabasca Formation, but display spatial correlation with the Martin Formation. They are tentatively associated with a syn- to post-D3 retrograde metamorphic event which thoroughly leached crystalline basement and generated uraniferous fluids which escaped, and precipitated metals, into fractures associated with faults that define the grabens in which the Martin Formation was deposited. Remobilization events allowed some of this uranium to move upward into fractures within Martin sediments.

Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. There are 381 mining sections currently operating on permit; from the interim Compliance Panel.

As part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Petroleum Research Laboratory are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the Appalachian region. The increasing demand for petroleum and its products and the increasing cost of exploratory drilling tend to emphasize the importance of improving the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Published reports setting forth the pertinent facts of these operations may help others to profit by the experience. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in West Virginia by the Piedmont Oil and Gas Co., the Ryan Oil Co., and Water floods , Inc., on their Roane County leases in the Walton and Clover Rush Run pools. The principal oil-producing horizon underlying the area studied is the Big Injun sand, at approximately 2,000 feet. The sand is often referred to as blanket sand because it underlies much of the State and is oil-productive in many localities. Most of the pools in the area were discovered during 1907 to 1910 and were similarly developed and operated.

Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

"Despite the recognized influence of product fineness on line capacity and downstream process performance, few mineral concentrators today use particle size measurement of the final product in automatic control applications for particle size. ‘Near-line’ particle size instrumentation has existed for decades and is utilized in modern concentrators, but low availability and measurement frequency, due to problems with slurry sampling and transport systems, make these technologies unreliable for use in automatic control. An innovative technology for real-time particle size measurement on individual hydrocyclones, named CYCLONEtrac™ PST (particle size tracking), has been developed by CiDRA Minerals Processing, and proven in commercial installations, demonstrating near 100% availability with minimal maintenance requirements, thus overcoming the limitations of previous technologies. Potential stakeholders require convincing, reliable information regarding the economic value delivered by automatic grind control projects. In this paper we present a methodology for estimating such value with the CYCLONEtrac™ PST technology, and demonstrate unique opportunities to improve process stability and performance. Based on actual plant data accumulated over time, the evaluation approach assesses and highlights the significant potential process improvement that can be expected with the particle size tracking technology. As an extension of previous work, in this paper we present the key operating criteria for optimizing the production of valuable metals and increase mill throughput by identifying the optimal grind size. As this requires operating closer to the process boundaries, accurate real-time particle size measurements, such as those provided by the CYCLONEtrac™ PST system, become essential for achieving the maximum potential value from every operation. For further illustration, data from three different copper plants is compared.Introduction Owners and operators of mineral concentrators constantly search for the most economically attractive way to increase the output of valuable metal. A logical approach is to identify a key parameter that has the greatest impact on the performance of multiple stages of the process and then use a holistic analysis methodology to determine how this key parameter can be controlled to optimize the final output.Particle size is widely recognized as such a key parameter; however, very few concentrators today use real-time particle size measurements for automatic control of the final product size due, to a large extent, to the inherent limitations of existing technologies. ‘Near-line’ particle size measurement instrumentation, which has been used for decades, typically suffers from low availability because the fundamental measurement technologies were developed for other, less demanding industries and then adapted to the harsh environment of the typical mineral concentration process. An outline of the key differences among the available technologies used for particle size measurement in comminution circuits has been completed in previous work, and plant data has proven the benefits of measurements on individual cyclones – something that, until now, has not been possible (Cirulis, 2017)."

This paper describes a study of seismic records from the Kiirunavaara mine footwall which were interpreted in relation with numerical models developed outside the study. Seismic data was retrieved from a portion of the mine and filtered with respect to the ratio between energy carried by an event's P (primary) and S (secondary) waves (Es/Ep ratio), local magnitude, and active mining depth. The data was analysed using Es/Ep ratios and Gutenberg-Richter graphs to determine the event origin, mechanisms, and minimum magnitude cut-off. The magnitude completeness was identified by studying the b-value stability and b-value differentiation between origin sets. It was shown that, by separating seismic events into the origin components shear, complex, and tensile based on Es/Ep ratios, a representative value for the magnitude completeness can be identified for a catalogue with a convex cumulative log curve. The majority of the events were shown to be of shear-slip origin based on the recorded Es/Ep ratios, with pure tensile events constituting only about 10% of the recorded data. Spatial and temporal event location patterns were studied and compared with numerical modelling results. The comparison showed a correlation between shear-slip seismic events and volumes experiencing high differential stresses in the lower part of the footwall. In the upper part of the footwall the results did not reveal any clear correlation between observed damage in drifts and seismic event locations. The concentration of seismic events in the lower portion of the footwall is discussed in the context of rock mass displacements. The results indicate a possible connection between mine seismicity at depth and damage observations in the drifts in higher non-seismic areas by seismic softening and subsequent lateral expansion of the rock mass.

Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading coal and mineral fines in the mining industry. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Furthermore, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically. Due to these technological problems, some operators are forced to discard at least part of the ultrafine materials to tailings (or refuse) ponds, causing significant losses of valuable resources and creating environmental concerns. To address these technological issues, a new separation process named hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation has been developed on the basis of the recent advances in the science of hydrophobic interactions. The results obtained to date show that the process can recover and dewater ultrafine particles simultaneously with high separation efficiencies. Following a series of extensive laboratory tests, the process has been scaled up to proof-of-concept and pilot-scale continuous tests. The results obtained with desliming cyclone overflows, screenbowl effluents, and by-zero coal flotation feeds can be cleaned to less than 4% ash and moisture with over 97% organic matter (or coal) recoveries. The results obtained with mineral fines also showed encouraging results.

Mine reconciliation is the art and science of comparing predictions and real-world outcomes with the intent of revealing the true quality of performance of models, planning, mining, and mineral processing. When mine reconciliation is conducted in a systematic, transparent and sustainable way it can play a central role in the governance of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimation and reporting. The core processes of modelling, planning, mining, and processing need to be transparent to be able to demonstrate that MRMR are reliable predictors of mine performance and value. Transparency is also necessary for mine technical staff to generate meaningful analyses, conclusions, and business improvement actions that demonstrably maximise value for all stakeholders. Most mines have some form of mine reconciliation practice, however because there is no agreed industry standard, and because mine reconciliation is difficult for a variety of reasons, it is often unsustained and/or ineffective at delivering the required transparency of performance. To deliver true governance of MRMR and business value, mine reconciliation must be sustainable. There are two categories of issues that combine to make mine reconciliation extremely difficult to sustain, these are technical, and people related. Technical issues include defining standard terms, accurately tracking material flows, data availability/adequacy/quality, calculation of key performance indicators and tolerance limits, analysis, and interpretation of results, understanding limitations of modelling techniques, and defining appropriate actions that can deliver value. These technical challenges are non-trivial, however compounding these are a range of people issues that include personal agendas, scepticism, lack of knowledge and experience, poor teamwork, absent leadership, toxic workplace culture, staff turnover, ineffective communication, siloed organisational structure, and lack of deliberate change management. All these problems can be solved with clarity of purpose, definition of the process of mine reconciliation, discipline in following the process, appropriate resourcing, and commitment to success across the entire organisation. Outlined in this paper is a management system that delivers sustainable mine reconciliation by addressing both the technical and people issues described above. This approach can deliver significant value for a mine and adds a robust, defensible governance over MRMR estimation and reporting.
