This work proposes a capacitive load cell for conical picks to enable underground continuous mining machine operators to perform their roles away from known hazardous regions near the machine. The load cell is embedded in commercially available flexible printed circuit board, integrates with the target tooling, and demonstrates in situ force sensing of vibration signatures for continuous mining cutting tools. Changes in material constitution, tool mass, and tool geometry cause modal variations in vibrational response measurable with force sensors at the cutting interface. Time-series measurements are captured during rock cutting tests using a linear cutting machine. These measurements are segmented into small windows, less than 0.25 s, and are preprocessed using the fast Fourier transform, which highlights the modal variations. The transformed measurements are then classified into different material and wear categories using support-vector machines with the radial basis function kernel. Different normalization schemes and Fourier transform methods are tested for signal preprocessing. Results show that the power spectral density measurements with normally distributed coefficients give good results for material classification, while the normalized time-domain measurements give better results for wear classification. Under laboratory conditions, this technique is shown to classify material and wear categories with F1 score above 0.85 out of 1.0 for our experiment. This technology could be used to assist operators in assessing material and wear conditions from a safer distance. It has applications in the coal mining industry as well as other applications which use conical picks such as road milling.

The Precambrian of Midcontinent United States includes a metamorphic belt of probable Middle Precambrian age, a belt of Keweenawan volcanics and sediments, and widespread igneous activity that extended from Iowa to Texas. Most of the present structural configuration of the Midcontinent was developed by epeirogenic movements during the Paleozoic. The dominant elements are basins and arches. Three major metallogenic provinces occur in the Midcontinent. They include the Missouri Precambrian iron ores, the Lake Superior copper ores, and the Mississippi Valley lead-zincbarite- fluorite deposits. Several large iron deposits, occurring in rhyolite and andesite host rocks, are known. Both discordant massive bodies and replacement- type bodies occur. The iron deposits are believed to have been formed during the period of igneous activity. They are essentially the same age as the volcanics and older than the granites that intrude the volcanics. The Lake Superior copper ores include two established districts, the Keweenawan district and White Pine, and the copper-nickel deposits in the Duluth gabbro. The lead-zinc-barite-fluorite deposits include four major districts, Southeast Missouri, Upper Mississippi Valley, Tri-State, and Illinois-Kentucky, and at least eight minor districts. Ore may occur in stratiform deposits and in veins. The major districts all contain stratiform deposits, but several have produced appreciable quantities of vein ore. Only vein deposits are known in some of the smaller districts. The major features of all districts can be catalogued in terms of host rocks, structural patterns of districts, types of ore-bearing structures, and mineralogical characteristics. From these features, a Mississippi Valley type ore body, in its type area, can be defined.

Introduction Rock bolting is a general term that encompasses pinning, roof bolting, rib bolting, and cable bolting. Rock bolting contributes the highest nonproductive cost and is the most significant safety risk in mining today. Total installed bolt costs are now more than $20 per bolt. Rebolting or repair work doubles this. And bolting accidents account for about 30% of all fatal and nonfatal lost time accidents. It is only logical, then, for the mine operator to install the highest quality anchors possible. Every bolt on the market - tensioned, untensioned, full contact, or point anchor - has designed capabilities in axial, shear, and fluctuating ground conditions. Bolts will provide a designed support if material specifications and installation procedures fall within the manufacturer's recommendations. This also assumes that there are no unexpected geological or operational changes. Proper material specifications and installation procedures should guarantee the mine operator a quality anchor. To help assure this, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the AMC Manufacturers group developed stringent ASTM materials standards. These govern mechanical point anchor bolts and bolts using threaded and nonthreaded rebar. There are also minimum standards that suppliers must comply with in the manufacture of frictional bolts. However, most frictional bolt standards are based on the manufacturer's own specifications. It would be impossible to set uniform regulations on frictional bolts. Each bolt provides support in a slightly different manner and thereby requires different material needs. Quality Control In any case, material quality can generally be assured through tight order specifications and periodic quality control checks. The problem with installing quality anchors does not solely lie with the material. It includes all the events that occur from the time a bolt leaves a manufacturer to the time it is installed. The anchoring ability of any major type bolt can be affected by transportation, storage, mechanical performance of installation equipment, installation demands of the operator, proper drilling accessories, and local geology. Table 1 and Fig. 1 document the negative events that can affect each bolt and the degree to which it can be affected. Drilling a hole of oversized diameter, for example, is an operator controlled factor. It will adversely affect most bolts. An over-sized diameter reduces, or even eliminates, the anchorage capability of a mechanical shell. It will reduce the support capacity of a split set to nearly nothing. And it will cause a partial or incomplete grouting around the resin bolt. Frequently, due to bit wear, holes are drilled undersized in diameter and may not be properly cleaned out. In this case, it will be difficult for the operator to push the mechanical shell into the hole, thereby causing him to drill another hole. In cases where the bolt is obviously not providing anchorage, operators will probably drill another hole and place another bolt. Rock Bolt Regulations It is the situations where a bolt is improperly installed in the hole, but gives the appearance of a good bolt, that are frightening. In fact, some safety officials and engineers believe that only 50% to 60% of installed bolts are working. These bolts cause irregular ground load transfers in other bolts and overload them. This causes hazardous situations and overstressing. It is these bolts that fail prematurely 200 to 255 mm (8 to 10 in.) behind the face and possibly contribute to the high accident rate. "A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The design and construction of foundations for power transmission line towers present some special problems. This paper describes a system of design and construction for these foundations that was developed in Europe and has attained general use there because of its reliability and cost effectiveness. Transmission line foundations distinguish themselves by having to deal not only with compressive and lateral loads, but with uplift loads and, because of the wind (in some regions earthquakes), with dynamic loading. The construction of transmission line foundations distinguishes itself mainly in the great number of inaccesible locations involved, resulting in extensive geotechnical investigation and logistical problems in moving men, materials and equipment.

ROCK wool, one of the most recent additions to the list of Canadian-made, insulating materials, is a soft, light, fibrous material consisting of interlaced, flexible, glassy fibres so exceedingly fine that, individually, they are almost invisible to the naked eye and will float in air. In the process of manufacture, a suitable rock, generally a self-fluxing argillaceous dolomite consisting of nearly equal proportions of acidic and basic constituents, is melted to a completely fluid state and then converted into fibres either by a blast of steam or air, or by a mechanical device. The increase within the past five years in the number of plants in the United States making rock wool and slag wool has been remarkable, especially in view of the depressed conditions prevailing 'with most industries during this period. In 1930, there were only 8 plants reporting production of .these materials, whereas at the present time there are 44 plants in the United States listed as making these products, and there are 3 plants in Canada. In 1929, the total sales of rock-wool products in the United States amounted to-$2,377,324. In 1934, according to the National Rock and Slag Wool Association, 26 member companies reported sales of $3,695,405, and in 1935 the sale's of 30 member companies had a value of $5,571,469. The establishment of the rock-wool industry in Canada followed the publication in 1931 of a report (1) by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa, in which was set forth the results of field work and laboratory studies which indicated that large deposits of rock in the Niagara peninsula, hitherto regarded as valueless, were suitable for the making of rock wool. This report was supplemented in 1934 by another report (2), giving the results of further laboratory and commercial-scale tests on the rock from these particular deposits, which proved conclusively that rock wool of good quality could be made from the rock in question.

Until relatively recent times, virtually all gold was recovered by gravity and/ or amalgamation methods. Although such techniques are very effective on coarse gold, they become increasingly less useful for finer grains especially when the gold is partly enclosed in rock matrix. Throughout the nineteenth century a number of bonanza gold fields were found in the United States, South Africa, Australia and Canada. In every case the abundant supply of gold nuggets and coarse alluvial gold soon gave way to hard rock mining with its inevitable losses of fine gold in the stamp mill tailings. Continuing efforts to develop new technologies capable of dissolving gold from finely ground ore were eventually successful first with chlorination (the Plattner process) and subsequently with cyanidation. Even before the nineteenth century, however, European chemists such as Scheele and Berthollet were aware that gold could be readily dissolved in an excess of free cyanide(1). As early as 1840, a patent was issued to the Elkington brothers for the dissolution of pure gold in cyanide solution and its subsequent plating onto various metals, with or without an applied electrical current. In 1846, Elsner showed that oxygen was also required to solubilize gold or silver in cyanide media(1). Despite the fact that much work was done on the reaction of cyanide solutions with gold, a viable leaching process for gold ores did not quickly emerge although cyanide solutions were used to enhance amalgamation from the 1860s onward. Major problems were associated with the use of concentrated cyanide solutions; the costs of cyanide were excessive and it was difficult to recover gold from the concentrated media.

Increased coal production on longwalls has brought with it higher levels of dust generation. Most U.S. longwall mining operators have difficulty complying with Federal dust standards, which are stricter than European standards. Longwall operators faced with a longwall that is "out of compliance" have implemented a variety of practices designed to reduce dust levels. Mining conditions and other important variables, however, can cause fluctuations in dust levels that may overshadow the performance of a new dust control technique. This can result in the continued use of an ineffective technique or lead to the abandonment of an effective dust control technique. No single technique can keep a longwall in compliance. Maintaining compliance requires a fundamental approach to dust control -- proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques.

Joining of superalloy Inconel 61 7 with a foil interlayer using transient liquid phase bonding (TLP) technique was studied. Inconel 617 is a solid solution, Ni - Cr - Co- Mo alloy with an exceptional composition of high temperature strength, oxidation, carburization resistance and thermal stability. In this investigation, two bonding temperatures, 1065°C and 1150°C, and two interlayer thicknesses with joining times varying from 5 minutes to 24 hours were employed. Experiments were carried out using nickel base interlayer (A WS BNi-3) with boron as the melting point depressant (MPD) element. Joints were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM, FEG-SEM, EBSD, XRD and microhardness. The results indicated that the rate of elimination of the liquid phase with increasing the bonding temperature, holding time and decreasing the thickness of the interlayer increased. The main precipitates in the diffusion layer had platelike and blocky morphologies for both bonding temperatures and all holding times.

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted on copper converter slags to evaluate the relative merits of recovering copper from slow-cooled versus water-quenched slags. Three slags containing 1.6, 5.0, and 6.6 percent copper were used. More than 90 percent of the copper was recovered in a rougher concentrate leaving a 0.2- to 0.3-percent copper tailings when treating slow-cooled slag. Lower recoveries and higher copper tailings ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 percent copper were obtained from quenched slag. Grindability studies were made on the respective heat-treated slags. Quenched slags proved more difficult to grind than slow-cooled slags. Cost studies showed that quenched slags can be treated at slightly lower cost than slow-cooled slags. However, the cost advantage of processing quenched slags is more than offset by the higher copper recoveries obtained from slow-cooled slags.

In connection with investigations being conducted by the Bureau of Mines regarding pulmonary disease which is prevalent among metal miners in certain districts , a large number of rock- dust samples have been collected , and have been examined in the Bureau's laboratories . The earlier work has been described in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 105 , " Pulmonary disease among miners in the Joplin district , Missouri , and its relation to rock dust in mines " by A. J. Lanza and Edwin Higgins , 1915 , and in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 132 , " Siliceous dust in relation to pulmonary disease among miners in the Joplin district , Missouri , " by Edwin Higgins , A.J. Lanza , F.B.Laney , and Geo . S. Rice , 1919. The methods of collecting and examining dust samples have been greatly improved during the investigation , much valuable information having been made available by similar investigations conducted by the Miners ! Phthisis Prevention Committee , Union of South Africa . The latter are described in the " General report of the Miners ' Phthisis Prevention Committee , Johannesburg, Union of South Africa , 1916 " , and " Final report of the Miners ' Phthisis Prevention Committee , Johannesburg, Union of South Africa , 1919. " The investigations by the Bureau of Mines and the South African committee show that by prolonged inhalation of air containing minute particles of sharp and insoluble rock dust , the lungs retain sufficient dust particles to cause decided injury to the lung tissue , the injured lung becoming very susceptible to the development of tuberculosis .

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimization Alliance is an Australian industry-academia collaboration which has been developed to support mine haul road operators by fully integrating mine road design research solutions with industry end-user service providers to design, assess, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies required to optimize the safety, environmental and economic performance of a haul road. Initially, a broad overview of the university-industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis, internationally. This insight places realization of a collaboration between Curtin University Western Australian School of Mines Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering (WASM ME2) and the Haul Road Optimization Alliance (HROA) industry members into context of opportunity. Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry can collaborate to deliver a more robust solution to mine haul road design, performance or management needs, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service-providers alike forms the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and implementable solutions. The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver improved mine haul road designs and optimized operational performance, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through focused, end-user driven research and integrated solutions implementation."

"The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test®), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. In this paper, the size-density distribution of coarse middling coking coal (CMCC) with different grinding fineness and flotation concentrates was investigated. Then, the flotation behaviors and liberation characteristics of different size-density fractions in ground CMCC were analyzed, and the different size-density fractions were divided into five categories: mostbeneficial, secondary-beneficial, poorly liberated, insignificant-pollution, and serious-pollution. Based on the content of particles with different liberation characteristics, an evaluation index of the liberation characteristic of ground CMCC, namely, the liberation perfection index (LPI), was proposed. The results indicated that grinding changed the size-density composition of CMCC, which affected the flotation performance. Insufficient grinding and overgrinding were not beneficial to flotation. Insufficient grinding caused a higher content of poorly liberated particles and a lower content of most-beneficial particles. Overgrinding increased the content of serious-pollution particles and reduced the content of most-beneficial particles. The size order of the LPI values of different ground CMCC was consistent with the flotation efficiency, and the LPI values of the other two similar samples were overall positively correlated with their flotation performance, suggesting that the method is universal.

This paper , which describes the mining methods and costs at the Atwood copper mine in the Lordsburg ( Virginia ) Mining District of Hidalgo County , N. Mex . , is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices , methods , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant are situated in the west half of sec . 7 , T. 23 S. , R. 18 W. , about 3 miles by road southwest of the center of Lordsburg , near the old abandoned townsite of Valedon ( see fig . 1 ) . The main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes through Lordsburg , as does the paved eastwest U. S. Highway 70-80 . A spur line of the Southern Pacific ends near the mine . A good graded road connects the mine with Lordsburg . The following pages present a brief history of the district , describe the geology , and outline methods of prospecting and exploration, including sampling and estimations of tonnages and values . Development, and mining methods are explained , and transportation , ventilation , drainage ,. safety measures , and organization are described . A mathematical model d1.20p/4L = A(8v)8 derived from the Blasius equation is proposed to be applicable to turbulent flow through straight cylindrical pipe for time-independent fluids which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (dp/4L) vs log (8v/d) plot or stress-flow diagram. Such a correlation should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable frictional pressure reductions. The Newtonian diameter exponent value 1.20 is shown to be empirically valid for turbulent non-Newtonian flow by application of numerical analysis methods. Multiple regression analysis is applied to a logarithmic linearization of the proposed model. An improved data fit results from further linearization achieved by taking linear terms from a generalized Taylor's series expansion about the multiple regression coefficients. Extensive experimental data obtained in five pipe diameters with water, sodium carboxymethyl-celIulose solutions, guar gum solutions, bentonite clay suspensions and calcium carbonate slurries are presented. Except for calcium carbonate slurries, which were investigated rather than time-dependent cement slurries, the fluids studied contain drilling or fracturing fluid additives. The behavior exhibited by these fluids is considered typical of most fluids encountered in drilling, cementing and fracturing operations. INTRODUCTION Considerable difficulties have been encountered in predicting turbulent flow pressure drops produced by non-Newtonian fluids flowing through straight cylindrical pipe. Correlations previously presented require extensive experimental data which represent several pipe diameters and a wide flow rate range to estimate the necessary scale-up parameters.l-7 One must implement either elaborate experimental apparatus or spend considerable time and effort to gather these data. Presented here is a correlation method which should minimize the experimental effort and data analysis normally required by utilizing flow data taken with only one pipe diameter. Turbulent flow data (up-stream and down-stream pressure and volumetric flow rates) were collected for five pipe diameters through operation of a small pipeline system having an electronic data acquisition and digitizing system. A mathematical model derived from the Blasius equation was utilized to describe the functional relationship between pressure drop and the two independent variables, diameter and average flow velocity. A correlation, which should produce a valid single-pipe scale-up, resulted from a computer-implemented statistical and numerical data analysis for several time-independent non-Newtonian fluids.

SASKATCHEWAN POWER CORPORATION is a Provincial Crown Corporation responsible for the production transmission and distribution of electric power and natural gas in the Province of Saskatchewan. Through the electric power responsibility, we became interested in the coal reserves in Saskatchewan, which, although still somewhat of an "orphan fuel" in the early and mid 1950's, gave the promise of providing a low-cost source of energy for electric generation. Coal in Saskatchewan, a lignite with an "as-received" heating value of from 5000 to 6500 Btu's per lb and up to 40% moisture, was first recorded in 1853 . By the end of the 19th century, many small mines were in operation in the Estevan, Coronach and Shaunavon areas supplying local inhabitants with a cheap source of heat. These small mines, some of them prosperous, some of them not, continued operation right up to the late 1940's, when oil replaced coal in the market place. The year 1930, however, saw the introduction of the new technique of strip mining in the Estevan area. This technique revolutionized coal mining. It was now possible to use large machinery to uncover the coal and cast the overburden to one side instead of burrowing through thin seams of coal varying from 2 to 10 feet thick. The overburden cast aside by these large mechanical shovels, or later draglines, created heaps of spoil which at that time, during the depression, were a sure sign of prosperity and the welcome news that people had jobs. By the late 1940's, coal production had dropped off, but the spoil piles remained and were now labelled by some as "scars on the landscape", even though there had been some natural succession of grasses. In addition, some people had planted trees in experimental plots and even some aerial seeding had been done.
