This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

Information exchange for mine process optimization is essential. Today, modern mining equipment uses the IREDES standard to exchange production plans and reports for easy management and storage. To gain further benefits from process optimization, a mine wide access to real-time information is needed as e.g.: The current status of a machine, operational details etc. Presently, real-time data exchange systems are developed by machine producers. Each machine producer uses its own way of gathering, managing, and storing production data. These proprietary mining processes increase the complexity of cross platform data exchange and management for mines which involves machines produced by different vendors. Casting and unifying the data requires much effort. For this purpose, ?IREDES On-line? currently is being introduced. The standard defines an open, web based method for the exchange of volatile real time machine information. Two different principles are used: Web Services for cross platform information exchange within the IT world and the optional OPC UA for use with automation and process control systems. With such a standard information from machines of different vendors may be managed by using one common platform without spending the effort for dedicated interface development. Additionally, information management and storage will become straight forward since all the data are of the same format. The IREDES On-line standard utilizes the latest IT technologies as well as the knowledge and experiences gained from the previous IREDES standard. The paper explains the benefits, the use, as well as the technical design of the standard and gives application examples from the practice.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a FORTRAN computer program that can calculate stress states from overcoring measurements obtained from hollow inclusion cells, triaxial cells, strain gauges installed on the wall of a bored raise, doorstopper gauges, borehole deformation gauges, or a combination of any of these gauges. Such stress states are calculated with reference to global and principal coordinate systems. The background of the development of the program, its capabilities, and its special features, as well as the input required, are described in this report. Sample output is also shown in appendix C. Difficulties associated with numerical calculations of principal stresses and directions are pointed out. Threshold values for detecting these problems are reported; these values may be changed by the user as desired. Several test problems were set up to verify the computer program and were successfully solved.

The permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause is an expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study showed that expansion behavior during the hematite / magnetite reduction step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (viz. partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed, explaining the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results can provide better insight into reduction degradation behavior.

"A mathematical formulation has been presented to describe heat and fluid flow phenomena in CVD operations. In the statement of the problem, which included consideration of plasma enhanced CVD systems, emphasis was placed on identifying the parameters which play a key role in determining the rate and the spatial uniformity of the deposition process. This was done both through the appropriate dimensionless groups and by presenting an extensive set of computed results. The main conclusions that may be drawn from this work are that the deposition rate will be inherently non-uniform for atmospheric CVD systems; this may be somewhat ameliorated by inclining the susceptor or changing the vessel contours. Operation at greatly redeced pressures and for PECVD systems will give a much more spatially uniform deposition rate.1. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, there has been a growing interest in chemical vapor deposition techniques for the preparation of thin films for semiconductor, photovoltaic applications and for coatings in general, as evidenced by numerous journal articles and symposium proceedings devoted to this topic (1-6). An interesting variant of this technique is to perform the deposition in a plasma or glow discharge at low pressures because this technology obviates the need for the thermal decomposition of the precursor at the substrate surface and permits operation at greatly reduced temperatures (7-10).By far, the largest portion of the reported work dealing with both these aspects of the technology has been concerned with the characterization of the deposit, quite properly so. However, in more recent times it has been realized that the transport aspects of these processes are also deserving of attention because the understanding of heat flow, fluid flow and diffusional phenomena may provide the key to the solution of problems associated with obtaining uniform deposits and the proper scaling of laboratory measurements in order to design industrial CVD systems."

"Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

Heavy mineral mining has been a relatively small but important Florida industry for over sixty years. Geology of the Florida heavy mineral deposits is similar. Each formed along active coastlines after which the titanium minerals were upgraded in TiO2 by post depositional oxidation and leaching of the iron. There are four heavy mineral plants currently Operating in Florida. Ore is mined by dredges and the heavy minerals concentrated by gravity separation. The heavy mineral concentrates are further processed with high tension and electromagnetic separators to Produce titanium mineral concentrates for TiO2 pigment manufacturing plants. Zircon sand is produced as a co-product at all of the Florida plants. Staurolite is produced by Du Pont and Titanium Enterprises. Du Pont also markets a kyanite-sillimanite product. (Monazite is produced by Humphreys and Titanium Enterprises). Reclamation of mined-out land is an important part of heavy mineral mining. At the Du Pont plants soil is removed ahead of the dredge and placed over the quartz sand tailings. Grass is planted after fertilizing. A year later the land is fertilized again and pine trees planted. Most of the heavy mineral deposits now being mined will be nearly exhausted by the end of the century. New deposits to be mined in the 21st century will probably be smaller and lower grade than those now being mined. Advances in mineral processing technology will have to be made to allow these lower grade deposits to be mined economically.

This short paper deals with the subject of research and its relation to productivity. All who have stopped to even think about industrial re-search and its impact on the nation-al economy take for granted that research and development are pre-requisite to increased productivity. It is another matter, however, to identify and properly evaluate the many factors entering into the relationship between the two. Some studies are currently underway in the United States on the subject, but, so far, nothing much in the way of conclusive data has come to light. In Canada, we have not yet even produced any statistical figures on national productivity, although work is now being done on this subject and information will soon be available. The usefulness of being able to measure the benefits of investment in re-search and development in terms of industrial growth or productivity need not be laboured for the benefit of those interested in research management.

Thermodynamic properties of copper-iron mattes and slag-matte distribution of copper and some minor matte constituents (Ni, Co, Mo, As, Sb and Bi) are discussed on? the basis of equilibrium measurements: a change from. oxidic to sulfidic solubility as the predominant form of dissolution of copper takes place as matte grade decreases. Distribution coefficients of minor matte constituents are complex functions of sulfur and/or oxygen potentials?. The distribution behaviour of different? metals can be qualitatively derived from their affinities to copper and stabilities. of their sulfides and oxides. Plastic materials have been associated with electric and electronic applications since the early days of the electrical industry. Plastics can amount to 30 percents of the scrap mass. Generally, they are treated with flame retardants such as halogenated ones and they can result in different toxic chemical compounds. These plastics can be used as combustibles in the recovery of copper and precious metals. However, during their combustion, halogenated flame retardants can produce dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans. The estimated thermodynamic data of several organic compounds resulting from combustion of electric and electronic scrap, have been used in conjunction with the program HSC to calculate the conditions for dioxin and furan formation. The results show that the formation of the dioxins is dependent on the quantities of carbon, hydrogen, chlorine and oxygen reacting in a given system, as well as on parameters such as temperature and pressure.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is currently building City Water Tunnel #3 beneath the city. The purpose of this tunnel is to improve water distribution to the city and to allow the DEP to inspect the older tunnels and make the necessary repairs. These older tunnels have been in continuous operation since the early 1900's. Construction on the Third Tunnel is planned in four stages. The Nelson Street Shaft, which is the focus of this paper, is part of the second stage.

T HE Mysore iron works, at Bhadravati, about 2000 ft. above sea level in the Shimoga district of Mysore, British India, is served by a meter gage branch line of the Mysore State Railways. The works which were designed and erected by Perin & Marshall, who still act as consulting engineers, are surrounded by a thickly wooded country which sup- plies about 400 tons per day of wood for fuel. The ore deposits lie 20 miles to the south, and limestone quarries are close by the works. The Bhadra river sup- plies the works and the town with the necessary quantity of water. A successful placer mine is being operated by the E. T. Fisher Co. on Rock Creek in the South Pass mining district at Atlantic City, Wyo. About 2,800 cubic yards of gravel is dug daily by a gasoline-driven dragline shovel with a 1 1/4-yard bucket and washed in a movable plant with a gold-dredge trommel and standard-dredge sluice boxes; the total cost is about 12 cents per cubic yard. The gold-bearing gravel occupies a narrow valley between two low ranges, of hills. The ground is covered by brush and willows, which are cleared of in the fall by burning after the leaves have dried. The elevation at the mine is 7,600 feet above sea level.

"The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location. THE development of the oil and gas resources of Western Canada is not, as many suppose, a new industry. For more than half a century an intensive search for these valuable products of nature extended from near the western edge of the Precambrian Shield to the Pacific coast, and from the International boundary north to the Arctic circle. The chief centre of interest to the oil prospector has, however, always lain in that region lying east of the first range of the Rocky mountains and confined largely within the boundaries of the Province of Alberta. Although there are many geological problems yet to be worked out in this Province, the oil-well driller has helped in no small way in determining sub-surface conditions and distribution of rock formations. The chief geological conditions as they affect the drilling of wells are generally re-cognized, and for this purpose the Province may be partitioned into three main divisions: first, the disturbed belt or foothills region extending along the eastern edge of the Rocky mountains; second, the Alberta geosyncline, a broad trough lying to the east of and parallel to the disturbed belt and from which the formations rise eastward to level off and form, third, the plains ? ? region, extending over the rest of the Province. A relatively small area in the northeastern part of the Province is underlain with Precambrian rocks and may be excluded from this classification, as it is of no interest to the oil prospector. The foothills, or disturbed belt, has presented the greatest difficulty to drilling, though it has produced the largest yield of oil within the Province to date. Within the foothills belt, the rock formations consist largely of hard shales interspersed with layers of abrasive sandstones, which wear out drilling bits at an alarming rate. The strata, in most flaces, dip steeply and are cut by numerous thrust faults. Although some o the faults have great displacements, their presence may easily be overlooked or the extent of the fault misinterpreted. Many a prospect well has been located on what appeared to be a suitable geological structure only to find, after drilling through a normal succession of rocks for 4,000 feet or more, that the drill had passed through a major fault plane to a younger formation than that in which drilling was started. Only a repetition of formations already drilled could be expected at greater depths.

Hydrothermal systems form on land where and when an impermeable cap-rock unit ( either natural or self-sealed) , a permeable aquifer. and permeable discharge and recharge channels (cross-stratal permeability) develop in an anomalously hot part of the crust. A consideration of the relationship between magmatic and tectonic events in volcanically active areas indicates these conditions arise during: (1) the resurgent doming stage of the resurgent caldera cycle; (2) following movement on the bounding faults of tilted fault blocks ; and (3) as a result of hydrothermal boring associated with the intrusion of major sills. On the assumption that the submarine hydrothermal systems which deposit volcanogenic massive sulphide ores are comparable to subaerial hydrothermal systems, it is suggested that: (1) the horizon of mineralization corresponds to the time period when conditions favour the development of hydrothermal systems, as outlined above; (2) exploration for Cu-rich Cu-Zn-Pb or Cu-Zn ores should be directed to paletopographically high areas near discharge conduits , whereas exploration for Cu-poor ZnPb ores should concentrate on paleotopographically low areas down slope from conduits; (3) deposits with stringer zones lying above normally permeable units may be underlain by regionally extensive weakly mineralized and altered zones (self-seal caps) ; (4.) in the absence of a self -sealed cap, the ore horizon may be underlain by a naturally impermeable unit (e .g. a fine clastic sediment) ; (5) the condition of cross-stratal permeability may be evidenced by features such as dykes. alignment of vari ous magmatic and hydrothermal phenomena, abrupt thickness changes in stratiform units indicative of ponding against syn-volcanic faults, and fault-scarp slump deposits; (6) the condition of high heat flow may be evidenced by near-surface magmatism and steep thermal gradients preserved in metamorphic mineral assemblages.

In a congested city or urban area, so called “lifeline of the city”, i.e. Gas, Electricity, telecommunication, as well as other utilities or facilities are supplied or transported underground through buried pipes or utility tunnel. Sometimes these buried pipes or utility tunnels are deep underground and interfere with the foundation of new structure. It is highly probable that a pile foundation is placed near an existing underground buried pipe or utilities tunnel and may influence its load bearing capacity. Hence, estimation of reduce load bearing capacity of the pile foundation placed near the existing buried conduit or utility tunnel is a complex soil-buried structure interaction problem. It is further complicated owing to uncertainty in estimation of geotechnical parameters of foundation soil due to measurement and testing errors, inherent soil variability and model transation. Under such circumstances, load bearing capacity is best assessed in probabilistic framework or through reliability analysis. The present study demonstrates how concept of response surface method (RSM) in conjunction with Numerical Analysis and First Order Second Moment (FOSM) methods can be combined to per the reliability analysis. The study answers the following question “reliability in reduction in the load bearing capacity of single pile placed near the existing underground pipe or utilities tunnel”. It is demonstrated that the approach provides first hand ination on the reduction in the load bearing capacity and then estimate the reliability of that estimation in terms of an index called Reliability Index (). Such preliminary investigation can be useful for advocating the detailed analysis as well as in the decision making for relocation of pile foundation.
