Some of US have been impressed with the need for a better understanding of the future place of the engineer in the petroleum industry. In academic work we are continually asked to advise students as to the opportunities in different directions, to guide them in their selection of professions, and it would be extremely helpful to those in academic lines of work to have the opinion of engineers from the industry relative to the need for petroleum engineers. IS the industry going to require a continually growing number of engineers in the future years, or have we perhaps reached equilibrium in that regard ? In anticipation of this meeting, I undertook to canvass opinion among a number of engineers of my acquaintance and I have been rather astonished to learn that the expenditure on engineering salaries in the producing branch of the oil industry is extremely low. I have figures from eight or 10 of the larger oil companies and it seems to be a fair statement on the basis of these figures to say that the average American oil company is devoting less than 2 per cent. of its gross expenditures in oil production to the payment of engineering salaries. A few examples will be of interest. I shall not mention names of individual companies, but one large Mid-Continent company is spending slightly less than 1 per cent. of its gross expenditure—that is, less than 1 per cent. of the total expenditure in the producing department—on engineering salaries and about as much on engineering research, which might properly be regarded as a phase of its engineering work. Another Mid-Continent company is spending about 11/4 per cent. on engineering salaries. A large California company is spending about l1/2 per cent. The largest figure that has come to my attention is that of an important Rocky Mountain and Mid-Continent company that is spending a little more than 6 per cent., but that is apparently an extreme case. Trust in AI systems and the nature and amount of information about the system can influence decision-making. It is, therefore, crucial to understand how AI-powered monitoring systems (e.g., gas monitoring systems) influence miners’ trust and decision-making in emergency evacuation. This work focused on measuring the differences between how participants respond to a simulated underground mine emergency evacuation situation when warnings are represented as coming from a human or AI-based monitoring system. We also manipulated the amount of information participants received about the system, yielding a 2×2 between-participants survey design. The participants received an alert message about rising gas levels in a mine and provided a response on how they would react and reported their perceived safety. We also asked questions to assess their trust in, preference for AI over human-based gas monitoring systems, and whether they are willing to delegate the duties of underground gas monitoring to AI systems. The experiment results show the amount of information had a significant influence on miners’ trust and decision-making. The safety perception of participants based on age, number of children and ethnicity was significantly different from one category to another. This work provides valuable insights as the mining industry deploys AI systems to aid mine safety.

Maintaining your competitive edge in the growing Australian mining sector today is an arduous task. With an ever increasing demand to extract more ore, safely, complete visibility throughout the blasting cycle has become vital to any operation. To achieve this requires full two way communication with every detonator during the testing and programming cycle, as well as, inside the firing window. Concerned with an increase in the number of incidents involving mining equipment, uncovering and digging into unknown misfires on-sites across Australia, Black Star Mine made the decision to embark on the use of electronic detonators to eliminate this hazard. Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political, and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). In other words, mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure, and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (The Importance Of Mining In Modern Society, 2024). The mining industry is closely linked to a country’s economy and activities related to natural resources. The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira & McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure, and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Importance Of Mining - Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, diversity, and inclusion brings us to an interesting topic: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge and requires collaborative efforts (Singh & Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This research proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive Mining for Sustainable Development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the Creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations, and advance toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, establishing the company as a global change agent.

As underground mines become more geotechnically challenging with increasing depth and excavation size, the requirement for ground support to be installed as per design becomes more critical. The verification of installation quality for cable bolts and grouted rock bolts is difficult to assess. Current methods to control quality have limitations; pull testing is largely inconclusive with only extremely poor installation being identifiable. Audits during installation can only capture a small percentage of installed bolts. Following large rock mass displacement from either squeezing ground or seismic events, even previously well installed bolts may have yielded and require replacement. A method to provide an improved understanding of the reinforcement installation quality is Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) using acoustic reflection. To validate the accuracy of an NDT system, both plain and bulbed strand cable bolts were grouted in clear plastic tubes. The encapsulation grout quality was deliberately varied from full encapsulation through to partial encapsulation and a range of different size voids. The clear tubes allowed the ground encapsulation to be observed. Cable bolts strands were cut at varying lengths and different water cement grout ratios were used. Acoustic testing of the cable bolt specimens was completed blind; the technicians were not aware of what was being tested. The NDT results correlated well with the grout encapsulation, with differences between full encapsulation, minor voids and major voids being determined. The different water cement ratio and bolt lengths (including when partially cut) were also identifiable but with some discrepancies. Trials of the technology underground have also shown the data collection process to be relatively quick with each bolt taking 1-2 minutes to test, with interpretation of the results able to be completed soon after. The NDT results collected from the underground trial showed a wide variance in cable bolt grout encapsulation quality indicating that there were installation issues.

The selection of a process for treating a gold ore is governed primarily by the characteristics of the ore under consideration. The form in which the gold occurs, its mode of association with other minerals, and the size and surface condition of the gold particles are important factors which influence materially the choice of procedure for recovering gold. A knowledge of these characteristics may be obtained by microscopic and chemical methods combined with experimental testing. Cyanidation and amalgamation, either alone or in conjunction with flotation and gravity methods, are peculiarly adapted to the treatment of gold ores, especially those of relatively low grade. Gold alloys readily with mercury provided both present clean surfaces. The presence of oils and grease, antimony and arsenic minerals, or soluble sulphides have a harmful effect. Very small, flaky particles of gold frequently are lost in amalgamation because of noncontact with the mercury. Fine gold in pyrite, or gold having rusty or contaminated surfaces, is often lost for the same reason. Grinding or some form of abrasion sometimes removes surface films of iron oxide or substances of a similar nature, and alkalies or other chemicals are used to remove grease. Gold is readily soluble in cyanide solution, and this method of treatment is particularly effective in the recovery of gold from the tailings resulting from other types of concen¬tration procedure. Cyanide solutions must contact the gold to insure recovery, and the porosity of the ore treated and the fineness of grinding required are important governing factors. The use of lime in cyanidation is necessary to protect the cyanide, to precipitate undesirable substances, and to settle slimes. Certain substances in ores are harmful in cyanidation; chief among them are those that combine with cyanide, forming cyanides, and carbon which precipitates gold from solution. Arsenic and antimony are also harmful if present in sufficient quantity. These and other difficulties encountered in cyaniding certain ores often are overcome by roasting prior to leaching. Zinc dust is used almost universally for precipitating precious metals from cyanide solutions. The refining and melting of the product may be accomplished by oxidizing the zinc before melting it in graphite pots with fluxes, although sulphuric acid is now used largely to remove the zinc before melting. Straight cyanidaticn practice is being replaced by flotation as a major process, followed by cyanide leaching of the tailings, but amalgamation is still needed as a primary process for the recovery of coarse gold before either flotation or cyanidation.

Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

The two basic resources on which we all depend for our food, clothing, shelter, and other comforts are agriculture and minerals. Our endowment and how we use it; the spirit and industriousness of our people; our form of social organization all converge to make up our standard of living-our way of life.

In 1939, at the request of The Koppers Coal Co., the Koppers Company Research Department established a Stoker Coal Research Laboratory for the purpose of investigating the performance characteristics of stoker coals in typical domestic stoker installations. Fig. I is a photograph of part of the laboratory. The material in this paper deals with the performance of one coal in a single installation. Presented are details of this installation, mechanical characteristics of the stoker, and the results of a series of burning tests in which adjustments were systematically varied. Summary OF Results Mechanical Features I. A large percentage of the total power consumed by a domestic stoker is used to operate the gear case and motor (Fig. 3)- 2' The power consumption per ton goes down with an increase in rate of coal feed (Fig. 4). 3. The automatic air control in this stoker showed advantages Over manual control (Fig. 5). 4. The air velocities through the retort tuyeres were uniform around the retort, but varied between the rows of tuyere rings (Fig. 6). 5. The crushing of coal with this stoker increased the minus 1/8-in. from 11.6 per cent to 19.2 per cent. There was a notice- able segregation of coal as it came from the retort and distribution was not uniform (Fig. 7). 6. Measurement of air entering over the fire showed that with some not uncommon adjustments this air may be a high percentage of the total air supply (Fig. 8 and Table I). Operating Performance ,. The, removal of clinker was shown to give a period of poor performance characterized by a high fuel-bed resistance and a high percentage of carbon monoxide in the flue gases (Fig. 10). 2. The fuel-bed resistance was found to decrease as the fuel bed built up in a normal response to heat demand after a prolonged hold-fire (Fig. II). 3. with intermittent operation the burning rate was almost always less than the feeding rate, The wide variations were found to be greatly dependent upon the length of the On period and the length of the intervals between On periods (Fig. 12). 4. The maintenance of a low furnace draft led to less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 13). 5. The maintenance of a minimum of excess air also resulted in less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 14). "The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to boost domestic production of manganese. Virtually no mining exists in the low grade and/or small deposits that occur in this Country. One large, low-grade manganese deposit located in westcentral Arizona--The Artillery Peak district--was extensively studied and sporadically mined during the 1940's and 1950's. Although manganese mining in the district has been long dormant, recent studies indicate that the deposits may be amenable to economical production by heap and/or in situ leaching methods. A conceptual design for an in situ leaching system features undercutting and blasting a block of ore, leaching with SO2, and extracting the manganese as a sulfate or oxide. Possible applications to other manganese deposits depend upon formation permeability and specific manganese mineralogy.

Graphs representing the standard free-energy of formation as a function of temperature for 21 fluorides are presented, along with estimated values for the standard free-energy of formation of 20 atedadditional fluorides. A few of the many possible uses of these data in metallurgical calculations are discussed, including the fluorination of oxides, sulphides, metallurgicaland chlorides, and the reduction of metal fluorides. RECENT papers which have presented free-energy data for oxides, sulphides, chlorides, carbonates, sulphates, and silicates in the form of free energy vs. temperature plots,1-5 have found important uses in teaching and metallurgical development work. This method of presentation of thermo-dynamic data serves to make available in readily usable form thermodynamic constants which are scattered throughout the literature, and to show by graphical means the stability relations which exist between the compounds of a given type. It is certainly desirable to have these free-energy-temperature diagrams for as many types of compounds as are of present or potential use in metallurgical processes. Thus, even though there are but few uses of metallic fluorides in extractive metallurgy today, the potential uses of fluorine processes are of great importance and serve as the principal justification of this paper. Recent developments in the production of fluoro-carbons have resulted in vastly improved methods for the production and handling of fluorine and corrosive fluorides, with consequent reduction in costs.".' The extractive metallurgist should no longer overlook possible fluorine processes when development of a new process for a relatively high unit-price metal is being considered. In a previous paperv he author outlined in some detail the importance and use of free-energy data in metallurgical calculations and also discussed the properties of a standard free-energy vs. temperature diagram. The same method of presentation is adopted in this paper, and the reader is referred to the earlier work for explanations of the use of free-energy data. Thermodynamic Data This paper presents standard free-energy vs. temperature diagrams, Figs. 1 and 2, for those fluorides for which the major thermodynamic constants are known. In the calculations of the standard free-energy of formation (AGO), values of the enthalpy of formation at 298°K (?Ho,) were taken from "Selected Values of Thermodynamic Constants"8 most of the values of standard entropy at 298°K (S°298) were taken from "Selected Values"," but in a few cases the values given by Kelley9 ere preferred; data for the Phase changes came from "selected Values" and several of Kellley's publics- tions;0-12 and most of the specific-heat data were taken from Kelley.l0 The appendix gives a detailed list of the sources of the data. As explained in an earlier paper,6 he accuracy of some of the standard free-energy relationships is not high. An error of +1 kcal at 1000°C is expected in most of the curves of Figs. 1 and 2. The error may be as high as +3 kcal in some of the curves. Rather than attempt to estimate the reliability of each curve, the source of the data used is reported in the appendix, and the reader may compare these data with newer values as they become available. Figs. 1 and 2 fail to show values for the fluorides of many important metals. In most cases this is because the entropy of the metallic fluoride is unknown. For preliminary calculations it is often useful to have available the best estimate of an unknown datum, rather than no information at all. With this in mind, Table I lists estimated standard free-energy values for a number of important metallic fluorides not included in Figs. 1 and 2. The values reported in Table I were, calculated by Brewer et al.13 and are based on estimated entropy values. The estimated uncertainty of the values for each fluoride were calculated from the uncertainty values given by Brewer1' for ?H°, and the entropy function.

THIS necessarily brief sketch will attempt to summarize the high lights of perhaps the best meeting so far held by the Iron and Steel Division. All sessions were well attended and the discussion was vigorous and of a high order. The technical sessions opened. on Tuesday morning. "Precipitation Hardening of Copper Steels" was discussed by Cyril S. Smith and Earl W. Palmer, and dealt with steel with a 1 per cent copper content. Discussion brought out that there were no fabricating difficulties, but that the surface might be somewhat checked due to intergranular penetration of copper which could be easily taken care of. Probable advantages of steels of this type for high temperatures were pointed out. "An Improved Nickel-chromium Hardened Chilled Cast Iron," by J. S. Vanick, described a wear-resistant cast iron and evoked a lively discussion.

Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. "In the early 1920’s, the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma constructed an approximately 8,238-foot long tunnel, the Tiawah Tunnel, through bedrock. Voids behind the concrete tunnel liner were detected via probe drilling in early 2000 as part of an interior visual condition assessment. In 2012 and 2015, conditions along the entire tunnel were efficiently assessed through geophysical investigation using ground penetrating radar (GPR) along the inner tunnel crown and at various select locations within the tunnel. Fifty-seven (57) potential voids, extending up to 19 inches in depth and 12 feet in width, were detected with 1,000 MHz GPR and confirmed through probe drilling with approximately 80% accuracy. GPR proved to be an efficient and reliable technology for void detection behind concrete tunnel lining. This paper highlights the geophysical investigation and how geophysical efforts were combined with other investigation efforts to definitively determine the presence of voids outside of the tunnel lining.INTRODUCTION The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma has a population of about 400,000 people. The original source of water for the city was the Arkansas River. The first pumping operation provided untreated water to homes and businesses in 1904. The residents of Tulsa found this water to be unacceptable due to the high levels of salt and gypsum present. As the city grew, land and storage/treatment facilities were acquired in order to obtain and distribute a more suitable raw water. The raw water needs for the city are currently satisfied by transport and treatment of about 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from surface water sources. Water is transported many miles from Spavinaw/Eucha and Oologah lakes to Yahola Lake and the Lynn Lane Reservoir (totaling over 3-billion gallon capacity). From here, the raw water is treated and transported to the various customers (City of Tulsa 2015). The Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority (TMUA) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the raw water transport system."

To date the commercial diamond bit setters have been principally interested in the speed with which they could produce a sharp, fast-cutting bit. Thus, a premium has been placed on setters who combine a high degree of manual dexterity with the ability quickly to select the Sharp points and edges of the diamonds and set them in the mold without lost motion. The premium on speed does not allow the setters the time, nor are they trained, to consider also the crystallographic structures of the diamonds which are the clues indicating the harder and more suitable working surfaces. Since early fall of 1949, the Bureau of Mines has been conducting a long-range series of experiments in which drill bort have been oriented in diamond bits in an effort to determine the effects and economic practicability of utilizing the hardest surfaces of the diamond crystal structure. The preliminary experiments completed to date indicate that a substantial saving in diamonds may be affected by using the harder areas of the diamonds as working surfaces in the crown of diamond bits. The experimental work is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratories and full-scale mine of the Mining Research Branch, Minerals Technology Division, Region VIII, of the U. S. Crown ethers are gaining importance in separation technology specifically for rare earth elements (REE, La to Lu plus Y) and precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir) due to their specific binding ability, metal complex stability and high extraction efficiency. The selectivity of crown ethers in extraction of these metals depends on different factors, including the cavity diameter and nature of a donor atom of the crown ether, size and charge of the metal ion, diluents and counter ion. Demand for strategic REE and precious metals are consistently increasing in the world while the separation of these metals is most challenging tasks. In this paper, the use of crown ethers in separation of REE and precious metals, reaction mechanisms and simplified process flowsheets will be elucidated. New reagents with high selectivity for the separation of these metals are further expected to produce high purity metals.

This paper reviews the existing and state of art knowledge for electronic waste (e-waste) recycling. Electrical/electronic equipments (EEEs) which are unwanted, broken or discarded by their original users are known as e-waste. The main purpose of this study is to provide a review of e-waste problem, give e-waste management strategies and introduce various physical e-waste recycling processes with special attention towards extraction of both metallic values and nonmetallic substances. The hazards arise from the presence of heavy metals (e.g. Hg, Cd, Pb etc.), brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and other potentially harmful substances in e-waste. Due to the presence of these substances, e-waste is generally considered as hazardous waste and may pose significant human and environmental health risks if improperly managed. This review paper describes the potential hazards and economic opportunities of e-waste. First of all, an overview of e-waste/printed circuit board (PCB) components and substances are given. Current status and future perspectives of e-waste and waste PCB recycling techniques are described. E-waste characterization, dismantling, liberation, classification and separation processes, are also covered. Manual selective dismantling after desoldering and metal-nonmetal liberation at −150 μm with two step crushing are seen to be the best techniques. After size reduction, mainly physical separation processes employing gravity, electrostatic, magnetic separators etc., which are commonly used in mineral processing, have been critically reviewed here for separation of metals and nonmetals. The recovery of pure metals from e-waste after physical separation can be performed by pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical or biohydro metallurgical routes, which are not covered here. Suitable PCB recycling flowsheets for industrial applications are also given. E-waste recycling will be a very important sector in the near future from economic and environmental perspectives for both developing and developed countries. Recycling technology aims to take today’s waste and turn it into conflict-free, sustainable polymetallic secondary resources (i.e. Urban Mining) for tomorrow. Recycling technology must ensure that e-waste is processed in an environmentally friendly manner, with high metal/nonmetal recovery efficiency a lowered carbon footprint. Taking into consideration our depleting natural resources, this Urban Mining approach offers quite a few benefits; it provides a substantial secondary resource, while also ensuring that the environment is kept free from harmful toxins in e-waste. This results in increased energy efficiency and lowers demand for mining of new raw materials.
