For a number of reasons, solids entering and leaving facilities for the treatment of minerals are becoming increasingly finer. Such materials pose problems throughout processing. Solids featuring small particle sizes tend to dusting, result in losses and segregation, exhibit various storage, transportation, and metering problems, and fine particulate effluents can not be easily captured, used and/or recycled. Sustainable mineral processing must minimize the exploitation of natural resources and avoid the need for disposal of wastes. The first requires the use of lower quality raw materials and upgrading, which typically results in the production of fine grained concentrates, and the latter encourages the recycling of wastes and byproducts or efforts to investigate them as sources for secondary raw materials or other beneficial applications. To overcome the difficulties associated with fine particulate solids, size enlargement by agglomeration is necessary. The resulting products have free flow characteristics, do no longer dust or segregate, and are sized and shaped as required for optimum processing. In addition, agglomerated materials may be engineered to feature desirable structure, composition, and a number of related, improved properties. Such engineering may be applied for the modification of fine run-of-mine and up-graded minerals as well as the production of secondary raw materials from by-products or wastes. By the interdisciplinary application of size enlargement by agglomeration waste-free processing of minerals becomes feasible.

Mining and processing of raw materials is one of the earliest activities of man for survival and development. The products are used for making jewelleries, metal tools, and for exchange of goods and services. However, despite the benefits of mine recoveries, it’s negative and long term effects on the environment and lives remain the point of discussion throughout the world. This study summarizes findings of researches in active/abandoned lead–zinc mines in Enyigba and Ishiagu mining districts including social surveys in the localities surrounding the mines in order to ascertain the effects on the inhabitants. Lead–zinc mining in Enyigba and Ishiagu, southeastern Nigeria has lasted for decades and has affected the socio-economic well-being of the host communities. There are evidences of soil, water, and plants contamination by Pb, Zn, Cd, and Mn in these mining communities. The mining activities also affect the overall social development of the host communities. These effects include retardation in educational development, health care provision, unemployment, and access to potable water supply. Others are rise in poverty level, social amenities, sanitary/hygiene level, high cost of living, and fertility rate. Possible mitigation strategies such as to liaising with relevant government agencies in collaboration with mine owner, mine workers, and host communities can ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

Recent research on the development of erosion resistant coatings has been directed to the finite element modelling of the behavior of coating and substrate, and their interface under the impact of eroding particles. The approach presented in this paper is based on advanced computer simulation techniques using ABAQUS/Explicit to investigate stress and strain at the surface and at the coating/substrate interface of multilayer coatings under single particle impact. It was found previously that solid particle erosion mechanisms are predominantly governed by the kinetic energy of the impacting particles. However, recent modelling efforts revealed that effects of various material models could be also significant. Therefore, different material models representing relevant coating and substrate properties were investigated and the effects of these models on the coating/substrate response were studied. Particularly, differences between elastic, elastic-plastic and brittle cracking model responses were assessed.

Introduction In the course of a programme of research on beryllium in progress in these laboratories, knowledge of the recrystallization temperature became necessary. As the information is not available in the literature, the determination of this temperature for metallic beryllium was undertaken. By the reduction of grain size through working and recrystallization and the probable simultaneous induction of preferred orientation, it was hoped to improve the working properties of beryllium at lower temperatures. The recrystallization temperature is usually determined by observing the lowest temperature of annealing at which new crystals are formed in severely cold-worked metal or alloys. This temperature is profoundly influenced by the following factors: the purity of the metal, in the case of an element, or the composition of the alloy; the degree of straining or working; the temperature of straining; the original grain size; and the time held at the annealing temperature. The observed temperature is lowered by higher purity, more severe straining, lower temperature of working, smaller original grain size, and longer time of annealing. Beryllium presents special difficulties in that the percent elongation in tension is effectively zero, so that ordinary squeezing or rolling was not possible. A possible means of straining was suggested by the fact that indentation hardness tests could be made. It was known from earlier work that the metal could be worked at elevated temperatures, so that working at the lowest feasible temperature and quenching might also be a means of producing strain. The purity of the metal is also a point of some uncertainty in the case of beryllium. Losano has prepared 99.96% Be which appears to be the best reported. Distilled metal used in the present work approached this purity. However, by analogy with other metals, residual impurities may have a pronounced effect on the recrystallization. Further purification of beryllium would evidently entail considerable difficulties due to the highly reactive nature of the metal, and was not attempted.

ABSTRACT Fierce market competition and demand have made it imperative for mining companies to achieve higher productivity and operational efficiency. The selection of the best mining method and equipment combinations will enable companies to meet production and efficiency targets. Continuous mining is increasingly preferred by companies for its high efficiency and low unit costs. We developed simulation models for two continuous mining systems: the continuous surface miner (CSM) system and the at-face slurrying (AFS) system. Considering two different case studies, the paper discusses application of developed models to determine the optimal number of trucks and equipment capacities for the two systems.

Underground stone mine ventilation is characterized by large openings with low resistances. These mines primarily face three challenges: moving adequate volumes of air, controlling and directing the airflow, and planning ventilation systems that work well with production requirements. Given these challenges, this paper examines the data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine the extent to which respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) are an issue in underground stone mines. Out of 522 sampled mines, there were 108 personal samples exceeding the RCS Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) during 2000–2020. DPM were more prevalent than RCS in these mines with 382 personal samples exceeding the DPM PEL out of the 929 mines sampled during 2002–2020. Dilution of DPM is usually the defining parameter for design of mine ventilation systems in largeopening underground stone mines. With this knowledge, focused attention can be directed to these mines so that appropriate prevention and mitigation techniques can be utilized to prevent stone miners’ exposure to RCS and DPM and subsequent respiratory diseases.

Titanium feedstocks are the building blocks of the titanium value chain. They can be mined directly, as is the case for ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, or manufactured from ilmenite by extracting various quantities of non-TiO2 components from the ore by chemical and/or thermal processes.While feedstocks can be grouped into categories of materials with similar characteristics, they are essentially unique products from very different mining locations around the world. In fact, no two feedstocks are exactly the same. As such, the variations between the available feedstocks, in combination with the permutations in processing technologies to turn the feedstocks into titanium pigment or metal, mean that choices between feedstocks are specific to the location in which they are utilised.In this paper, the authors examine the key requirements of titanium feedstocks to the TiO2 pigment and metal sectors. Apart from the well known differences between feedstock choices for the sulfate and chloride process, the more opaque considerations in feedstock sourcing are examined.

"This paper describes the modeling techniques and the experimental and computer results for two casting processes that are under development and optimization. These processes are described as follows:1) Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) during casting of Ti-6Al-4V round ingots using the plasma arc cold hearth melting (PAM) process: The purpose of EMS is to establish a singlemelt PAM process capable of consistently producing as-cast ingots without helium porosity and also having no need for surface conditioning prior to secondary processing.. The modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, fluid flow, and heat transfer equations, and mesoscopic modeling of the grain structure.2) Casting of Ti-6Al-4V slabs using the single-melt PAM process: The purpose of slab casting is to improve yield by eliminating an intermediate blooming step for converting round ingots to slabs. The modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of fluid flow and heat transfer equations. The effects of pouring and mold temperatures on the pool and temperature profiles were studied. Also, the torch effects (such as the torch standoff and its traversing path) on the pool and temperature profiles were investigated and the best-case scenario was used in the experiments. Evaluation results at RMI Titanium Company showed that the plates made from the slabs met the mechanical properties and microstructure requirements.Acknowledgment. Toolbox training is often described as short, informal training conducted at a worksite by technically competent persons for the benefit of a work team. The key feature of toolbox training is the focus on a work team and what is important to that group in its workplace. Toolbox training conducted by peers can connect miners and establish the feeling that the hazard is a real threat to them. This feeling can bridge the gap between delivery of a safety message and behavioral changes that can prevent an accident. Toolbox training is a popular form of "maintenance" training that should not be used to teach a new skill. The 10- or 15-minute toolbox session is simply too short a time to teach or learn a new skill and test for skill development. However, the toolbox format is an excellent way to inform workers of changes in workplace rules, conditions, or hazards by bringing the discussion of change to the level of the work group and suggesting how a change will affect the way workers perform their jobs. Toolbox training should be structured to address a very specific hazard. That is, the hazard source should be identified and the effect of the hazard on the worker described. The temptation to discuss a safety subject in broad terms will result in an equally vague result. For instance, discussing "equipment guards" is inappropriate for a 15-minute training session. There simply is not enough time to cover all the hazards and their remedies. A more appropriate topic would be "placing guards on a conveyor return roller" or "hazards of cleaning a conveyor return roller." Each topic is concise enough to allow the trainer time to define a particular threat to the safety of miners and discuss ways to defend against that threat. The clearest way to a safe workplace is to identify hazards methodically and eliminate them. This cannot be done with sweeping, generalized training. Some best practices that will protect a worker from the hazard should be presented, and the hazard should be located at the specific worksite. Toolbox training is an opportunity for the work team to participate in learning and share experiences and knowledge, often through storytelling. Storytelling is an ancient form of passing along information in an entertaining way. It is entertaining because it draws the listener in with imagination and creativity. Stories told within work groups are a way for miners to exchange experiences in which they made mistakes that resulted in an accident or a near-miss and learned a valuable lesson. Thus, co-workers can learn from others without the pain or fear that accompanied the storyteller's learning path. To encourage these shared experiences, the people in the group must be comfortable with one another. Participation doesn't stop with listening to a near-miss story or informing the group of an unsafe work practice. Participation by sharing experiences, knowledge, and skills should lead toward action in changing the unsafe tool, practice, or machine (Wallerstein, 1992). This power to change is called empowerment. Empowered workers use toolbox training sessions to discuss a problem; direct their own knowledge, experience, and talents in the context of their work environment to solve the problem; and put into practice what they have learned by sharing (Baker, 1992). A worker is much more likely to implement changes they have contributed to creating than changes forced upon them. Toolbox training functions best when the group size is small (under 20) and composed of workers with similar job functions. While combining all workers on a shift or multiple shifts may be convenient, the level of participation will drop dramatically as group size increases and participants are less connected. Similarly, when the work group participants are from different job functions, keeping the materials relevant to the individual becomes more difficult. The role of management in the toolbox training system is to communicate among various groups so that all groups at a mine site are hearing the same message. In very small operations, combining work groups can be productive if the trainer can promote open discussions and lead the group to solutions that address the needs of all and not let one group or individual dominate the discussion. WHY USE NARRATIVE METHODS An effective communications tool is to use stories as a means of describing a hazard and its consequences. Historically, using stories to transfer knowledge between individuals of the same and different generations is well established. All good stories share the same elements required to communicate safety principles. Stories require a setting (the part of the workplace), a plot (the circumstances that lead to a hazard), the solution (best practices), the lesson (what can happen), and the result (what will be done to prevent the hazard) (Dennehy, 1999).

Lump coal with high volatility is used for providing heat and reductive gas, and ensuring permeability in COREX. However, it is apt to be pulverized in transport and storage process. Therefore, comprehensive utilization of the pulverized coal to produce coal briquettes with appropriate binders is significant, among which the molasses binder cannot meet the technological requirements. In this paper, coal tar pitch binder and BJ additive were used in briquetting and carbonizing process of coal powder. The results showed that BJ effectively activated cold state cohesiveness of the pitch and make it bond the coke particles to a firm briquette at room temperature .Carbonizations of coal and coal tar pitch achieved obvious constriction and formed a carbonized skeleton. The drop resistance of wet briquettes reached over 50 times/1meter. When cured at 1000 °C for 1h under nitrogen atmosphere, the compressive strength of carbonized briquettes came to 6.43 Mpa.

Ti is an important constituent for steels and superalloys. During the continuous casting process and ElectroSlag Remelting process (ESR), Ti in molten steel and superalloy can have chemical reactions with casting flux and ESR slag containing CaO and CaF2. In order to investigate such exchange reactions, the understanding of the (Ca,Ti//O,F) reciprocal slag system is prerequisite. In the present study, a coupled phase diagram experiment and thermodynamic modelling of the (Ca,Ti//O,F) reciprocal system was performed. In particular, the phase diagram of the CaF2-TiO2 system was experimentally investigated by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) experiment and quenching experiments followed by Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA) phase analysis. The Gibbs energy functions of all solid and liquid phases in the (Ca,Ti//O,F) reciprocal system were optimised to reproduce the present data and all available reliable experimental data in literature.

Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

The environmental and nutritional characteristics necessary for maximum copper extraction from a low-grade ore by Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans have been explored as have many of the limiting parameters. Criteria considered were oxygen consumption, copper extracted, soluble copper concentration, temperature, pH, particle size, nutrients, and other inorganic salt concentrations. A set of environmental and nutritional conditions were developed for E. ferrooxidans Which supported cell reproduction and maximum microbial oxidation of a low-grade copper sulfide ore. Percolator tests conducted under these optimum conditions resulted in an 18 percent increase in the quantity of copper microbially extracted over that extracted under conditions considered to be standard. Manometric tests determined those extremes of environmental conditions and nutritional factors Which were detrimental to the extraction of copper by E. ferrooxidans.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

A survey of firefighting facilities and practices in coal mines conducted by the Bureau of Mines3/ showed such variations in equipment and apparent attitude toward fire protection that a comparison with other industry seemed advisable. Although other industry is confined generally to surface operations and the hazards probably are not as great, the same general methods of extinguishment are employed, so that the cost and protection at least should be comparable. An investigation of industry other than mines revealed a generally greater emphasis placed on fire-combating equipment, fire-brigade training, fire-fighting facility inspection, and fire-hazard elimination, as well as a greater average expenditure for fire protection.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. Energy efficiency is coming to the center of attention in the metallurgical and rolling mill industry due to increasing energy costs, limited resources and political requirements. Also, a green image and energy efficient production is a clear competitive advantage. SMS Siemag, being familiar with automation and measurement equipment, provides an energy data management system which gives transparency over the energy consumptions. All energy relevant media including electricity, gas, water, compressed air and further more can be recorded. The system is manufacturer-independent and allows the use of already installed measuring technology with the possibility of subsequent extension. So potentials for improvement can be recognized and energy savings can be estimated and proven after the implementation of the measures. Being familiar with the processes in the metallurgical and rolling plants, the system by SMS Siemag allows the assignment of the energy data to the production and plant data. Only by this connection, the data can be reduced to key performance indicators allowing authoritative evaluation of energy efficiency. The results are clearly represented on dashboards and support the continuous improvement process. The system also supports the energy controlling with an automatic reporting system, cost center assignment and in support with certification according to ISO 50001.

In studying the chemistry of lubricating-oil fractions from so-called ?paraffin-base? crudes, one of the first requisites is a method for the separation and removal of waxy material. A method utilizing solvents for this purpose is described in this report, together with preliminary experiments with solvents that led to its development. The solvents actually used are secondary butyl alcohol, acetone, and mixtures of these.. Isopropyl alcohol was also studied. Preliminary Experiments In previous work on "intermediate-base" crude oil, following the work of Wyant and Marsh acetone had been used for laboratory separations of oil and wax. Then acetone was tried for the separation of the waxes and oils of "paraffin-base" crude, the volume of acetone required (80 parts to 1 part of oil) was found to be too great for large-scale work. For this reason the effectiveness of other solvents was studied; the separation by acetone, however, was used as a standard.

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, which ranged in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µ m), -100 mesh (150 µ m), and -400 mesh (37 µ m) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the coals tested, pyrite and ash-forming minerals were usually rejected best at a -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µ m) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Bureau engineers made a preliminary examination of the Morefield mine early in 1943 and recommended investigation by trenching and diamond drilling, The Bureau of Mines conducted work from August to December of 1943, which indicated that the Morefield mine was a favorable location for an experimental mining program. The Bureau of Mines carried on such a program from September 1947 to March 1949. The property investigated is 30 miles southwest of Richmond in Amelia County, Va. (fig. 1). During World War II mica and beryl were shipped from the Morefield mine, but after the high prices and premiums paid during the war years were not available the mine was closed.
