Discussion by E.J. Garrison A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent. Reply by A.C. Noble E.J. Garrison asserts that I confuse the difference between a resource and an ore reserve. In fact, this paper was motivated by the observation that resources and reserves are almost universally confused throughout the industry. While Garrison is concerned that too-early consideration of engineering, metallurgical and economic factors will result in dropping properties too soon, some issues that must be considered include: •The purpose of exploration is to discover ore reserves, not to discover resources. •Ore reserves are always smaller than resources. • Decisions on exploration expenditures must be made based on the expectation of the quantity of ore reserves that will ultimately be defined. Noble's Fig. 2 can be used to give guidance as to when it is appropriate to begin reserve calculations. When exploration enters the "flat" portion of the curve, representative samples can be selected for metallurgical studies and appropriate mining methods chosen. It is at this stage that we know enough about the deposit to make intelligent choices of representative samples and recognize constraints on mining caused by the deposits shape, environment and physical properties. Once the appropriate technologies have been chosen, then their cost can be estimated with reasonable accuracy. Early entry of economic and process factors gives the false appearance of reserve status to the resource estimation. It would be more informative and less subject to abuse and misunderstanding if resource calculations were made at a number of cutoff grades. The cutoff grades should be chosen to cover the range of grades found in practice in existing operations of similar type. This would emphasize the open nature of resource estimates and encourage creative evaluation of mining and process technologies. It does not preclude the use of economic, environmental and recovery technology factors in deciding the advisability of continuing exploration expenditures, but would highlight their speculative nature. It is thus hoped that decisions on the future of the deposit would not be made on the presumed suitability of a given technology but on the actually known reality. I agree that resource estimates should be reported as a range of cutoff grades. Since reporting at a cutoff implies application of underlying economics (even by analogy to similar properties), however, it should be clearly stated that resources do not consider economic, mining or cost factors, and that ore reserves will be substantially less. The dilemma of the explorationist is that until the continuity and limits of ore-grade mineralization have been established, it is difficult to make quantitative estimates of either resources or ore reserves. Further industry discussion is needed regarding standards for disclosing early exploration information in such a way as to fairly represent the potential of an exploration property.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines is improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. Identifying equipment failure modes and developing associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle. This results in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time. Mining companies invest in their capital assets to provide the capacity necessary to meet operational needs. Over time, functional failures occur that reduce this productive capacity. Diagnostic technologies now exist that allow the condition of equipment to be monitored. Early response to this information minimizes the effects of functional failures and restores equipment re- liability. Reliability is a performance indicator of overall equipment condition. It is most often expressed in terms of mean time between failures. When the established objectives of a capital asset management program include the maximization of this failure interval, trailing indicators, such as availability and operating cost improve. The probability of equipment failure is influenced by engineering design and operating conditions. The performance level resulting from this operating environment is expressed as "inherent reliability." Without maintenance intervention, equipment will ultimately fail to perform its intended function and become less reliable. Therefore, maintenance must be managed as the supplier of reliable operational capacity. Maintenance can only supply equipment performance that approaches the level of inherent reliability. Actually achieving inherent reliability requires that all maintenance decisions are made at the economically optimal time. Enhancing performance levels beyond inherent reliability can only be achieved by altering operating conditions or practices or through physical equipment modifications. An evolution in maintenance management philosophy has been under way since the beginning of the industrial revolution. As equipment has become more sophisticated, so have maintenance practices. At the beginning of the industrial age, equipment tended to be over designed and slow moving. The first maintenance philosophy was one of reactive maintenance. Maintenance intervals were dictated by the operational status of the equipment. As a result, production interruptions were common and capacity needs were met through an investment in redundant capital assets.

The indium recovery via electrowinning from sulfate baths has recently gained significant attention as it does not present toxic emissions, hermetically sealed system requirements, human health, and environmental hazards. Following previous works related to the optimization process for AISI 316L and Ni cathode, it was observed significant importance of the metal supports on the input and output parameters of the indium electrowinning process from sulfate solutions. Thus, comparing input and output parameters in both cases seems very interesting. Particularly, regarding the input parameters, the attention has been focused on the electrolyte composition, current density, and temperature, while productivity, morphology, and structure have been considered regarding the output parameters. Considering the productivity as the optimal output, the findings for Ni cathode were better than that for AISI 316L in most of the selected conditions studied. In the case of morphology, indium grains appear rounded and dendritic on the AISI 316L, while those on the Ni cathode show stratified lamellar grains. Anyway, the indium deposit obtained on Ni cathode shows bigger grains independently from the used operative conditions with respect to that on AISI 316L. Regarding the structure, it is clearly tetragonal, but preferential orientation, crystallinity, and deformation of the structure strongly depend on the metal support.

The first indication of tungsten in the Bishop area was the discovery of scheelite concentrations in a gold placer operation in the ( since named) Tungsten Hills in 1913. After early intermittent production, the deposits of the district were slowly discovered and developed. The Pine Creek mine, located in 1916 and under the direction of Union Carbide Corporation since 1935, became the principal producer in the district. By the end of 1965, the total production of the district had reached 3,450,932 units of WO3, 17,071,242 pounds of molybdenum, and 19,599,110 pounds of copper. The topography of the district is characterized by its extreme relief, ranging in elevation from 13,986 feet to about 4400 feet in the Mount Tom quadrangle. The present topography is the result of the uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada and the great subsidence of the Owens Valley with its related deposition and volcanism. The general structure of the pre-Tertiary rocks consists of a series of tightly-folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock remnants surrounded by exposed plutons ranging in composition from hornblende gabbro to alaskite. The metasedimentary rocks consist of low- to intermediate-grade metamorphic equivalents of fine-grained sediments deposited during the Paleozoic era in a miogeosynclinal environment. Later volcanics were deposited in a eugeosyncline. The ore bodies in the Bishop district consist of scheelite-bearing tactite formed by the pyrometasomatic replacement* of calcareous sediments along the contact with an acidic granitic intrusive. A number of the metasedimentary remnants have had tungsten deposited along their edges.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

Coal was gasified in the presence of up to 3.57 million roentgens of gamma rays by the Bureau of Mines to determine whether the irradiation increased the gasification rate or yields of methane and hydrogen . High volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with steam at 500 and 1,500 psig and temperatures of 1,400 ° and 1,800 ° F ; five other coals ranging in rank from lignite to anthracite were gasified at 500 psig and 1,800 ° F. The average results of replicate experiments with and without radiation were compared for possible effects of radiation from 40,000 curies of radioactive cobalt . The irradiation had no gross effect on the gasification rate or on the yield and distribution of methane and hydrogen . It was concluded that gammaray irradiation produced no improvement in the technology or economics of coal gasification .

"We present an analysis of the mechanical properties of coal specimens from various coalfields and seams in South Africa. Our database comprises of 1800 test results from uniaxial and triaxial compression tests, as well as indirect tensile strength tests, which we collected from the various mining houses and research agencies in the country. We inspected the database for possible errors and present a brief description of the verification procedure in the paper.In the analysis, we reveal that the collected samples of strength and elastic properties of South African coals can be represented by single lognormal or normal distributions with only few outliers. This finding indicates that the samples realistically approximate the population of mechanical coal properties in the country and may suggest that the properties are randomly distributed. Significant coalfield- or seamspecific trends for the mechanical properties of coal are not clearly discernible from our data.Typical coefficients of variation for the individual mechanical properties range between 25-50 % on a country-wide and seam-specific level of analysis. Average uniaxial compressive strength values, however, are closely clustered for all seams. A comparison with data available from international coal strength studies show the distinct difference between South African coals and seams in countries of the Northern Hemisphere, where differences in the average coal seam strength are more pronounced.We observe that the number of specimens whose failure mode is influenced by the presence of natural discontinuities reduces drastically with the application of very small confining pressures to the specimens. Further, the strength-reducing influence of discontinuities diminishes with increasing confining pressures."

A collaborative research between University of Toronto and Hatch was conducted to understand and optimize the process conditions pertaining to a novel steelmaking technology. In this technology, known as CRISP, direct reduced iron is continuously melted and refined in a stationary electric arc furnace. The major challenge against continuous operation of the electric furnace was identified to be minimizing the corrosion of the refractory in order to achieve uninterrupted operation for a minimum of one year. Theoretical analysis and bench scale experiments together with two pilot runs resulted in defining an operating window for slag chemistry that would minimize chemical attack to the refractory while satisfying the oxidizing conditions required for sufficient decarburization. An analysis of the process in terms of energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases revealed that it is superior to the current batch DRI-based steelmaking technologies.

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard-recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

"The Sheerness Mine, a new surface coal mine located near Hanna, Alberta, went into full production in mid-1995. The mine, which is operated by Luscar’s subsidiary Forestburg Collieries (1984) Ltd., has the design capacity to supply up to 2.1 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal per year to the adjacent Sheerness Generating station under a 30-year contract. This paper documents the construction phase of this project and highlights the major equipment purchases as well as the construction of the mine facilities. The paper also focuses on some of the areas where cost savings have been achieved that have allowed the mine to come on stream six months ahead of schedule, and under budget. Project ReviewMine DescriptionThe Sheerness Mine is located 25 km southeast of the town of Hanna in southeastern Alberta (Fig. 1). The mining property occupies the western portion of the Sheerness CoalField and borders the Montgomery Mine, operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. in the east, and Highway 36 in the west. The Montgomery Mine and the Sheerness Mine exclusively supply the total coal requirement of the adjacent Sheerness Generating Station. The station is owned jointly by Alberta Power Limited (APL) and TransAlta Utilities Corporation (TAU). APL is the operator. Manalta’s Montgomery Mine has supplied coal to the Sheerness Station since its opening in 1986. Coal is shipped by truck from the mines over a network of haul roads to the coal receiving hoppers located on the east side of Highway 36."

Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

THE need for improved mine communication to increase efficiency and to insure greater safety has long been recognized. General and unrestricted communication between all points underground, and between the surface and all points underground, is probably the least advanced phase of the mining industry. An ideal system of mine communication must require no fixed wire installations. The equipment must be small, lightweight, and readily portable, and the power requirements low. A system that can be used not only under normal circumstances but also in an emergency, when the continuity of wires, tracks, and pipelines may be disrupted, must function independently of any aid furnished by standard installations. Radio communication offers possibilities of meeting all the requirements necessary for an ideal communication system in underground mines. Transmission of signals must be achieved through one or both of two mediums, through the air in mine openings or through the strata. The results or lack of results obtained by early investigators showed conclusively that radio communication by space transmission cannot be accomplished effectively beyond line-of-sight distances in underground passageways. A radio system underground therefore must depend solely upon transmission through soil and strata. The application of radio to underground mine communication was investigated by many individuals and agencies at different times in the last several decades, but little success was achieved before World war 11.2-0, The results of experiments during the war, and further knowledge gained in experiments with vastly improved communication methods and equipment after the war provided the background for additional research in radio communication in underground mines. During 1950 to 1.952 the University of Minnesota sponsored an investigation to determine the possibility of developing: a system of radio communication universally applicable in underground metal mines in the Lake Superior district. The possibility of using radio equipment to determine the imminence of rock bursts in deep copper mines in that district also was investigated. The investigation supplemented previous and concurrent emergency mine communication studies of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Testing equipment and laboratory facilities maintained by the Bureau of Mines at Duluth, Minnesota, were used in the research program, which was conducted as a mining engineering graduate research problem by the present writer under the direction of T. L. Joseph and E. P. Pfleider. The radio units used in the research program were designed and built to specification solely to conduct tests of radio communication in mines. Two identical units were used in all tests. Each unit contained a transmitter section, a receiver section, and a power-supply section, mounted on a single chassis. The entire unit was enclosed in a single 10x12x18-in. metal case provided with a leather-strap handle for carrying purposes. The front of the case was hinged to open upward and provide easy access to the single control panel on which all controls were mounted. Storage batteries supplied the operating power for all tests. Standard 6-v automobile batteries were utilized to provide adequate capacity to conduct tests for a full day without exhausting the battery. A frequency range from 30 to 200 kc was covered in eight pre-fixed steps on each unit. The carrier frequencies were crystal-controlled and amplitude-modulated. The receiver employed an essentially standard superheterodyne circuit and was sufficiently sensitive to detect signal strengths of 5 micro v. A heterodyne circuit was employed in the transmitter to obtain the low-carrier frequencies used in the units. Power output of the transmitter, usually less than 2 w, rarely exceeded 3 w in any test. Tests were conducted in mines on the Vermillion iron range in Minnesota, the Gogebic iron range in Wisconsin, the Menominee and Marquette iron ranges in Michigan, and a copper mine in the upper Michigan peninsula. All tests were conducted when the mines were operating normally, and usual mining, maintenance, and transportation activities were in progress, so that any interference caused by normal production activities could be evaluated during the tests. Tests were made between different points underground in each mine, and between underground and surface points at some mines. Test readings obtained at any one mine were calibrated in the laboratory before another series of tests were begun at the next mine. The transmitter and receiver were separated by one or more levels in each test, and generally there was no other means of communication between test points. Two 100-ft lengths of rubber-covered wire were used for antenna wires on each unit in both transmission and reception. The ends of the wires were connected to ground points in one of several methods, depending upon physical conditions at each test site. The wires were clipped to metal rods about 200 ft apart in the back, side, or bottom of the mine opening where the character of the rock permitted driving rods. "Uranium and thorium mineralization occurs at several localities in eastern Quebec along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The main occurrences are near Sept-Iles, Baie Johan Beetz, Romaine and St-Augustin river. Mineralization occurs mainly as disseminated uraninite, uranothorite, uranothorianite, monazite and minor zircon and allanite. Yellow to orange oxidation products are observed along fracture planes of the uranium-bearing deposits to a depth of a few feet. Magnetite, biotite and smoky quartz have a distinct tendency to accompany the radioactive minerals. The host rocks include white to pink pegmatite, pink granite and also, in the case of the Romaine and St-Augustin River occurrences, cream to grey plagioclase-rich, well foliated paragneiss and migmatite. Radioactivity near secondary structures, such as fractures and joint planes, indicates some reconstitution of radioactive minerals.The North Shore of Quebec is the northeast extension of the Grenville sub-province. It is also a uranium-thorium metallogenic province."

The dendritic pattern of steels shown by deep etching is used extensively as a guide in the inspection and control of the great majority of steels used in ordnance construction and for many applications in industry. The value of macroexamination lies in the fact that it enables a qualified observer to make deductions concerning the general quality of relatively large pieces of metal. Not the least of these general characteristics is the nature and extent of the dendritic segregation in the steel, either in the cast condition or after mechanical or thermal treatments. Previous Work Detailed methods for macroetching were outlined by Yatsevitchl and have been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. A comprehensive study of the occurrence, origin, and the chemical and crystalline nature of the dendritic structure was given by Keshiam2 The marked persistence of dendritic segregation in nickel steels is fully recognized and has been discussed by Sauveur and Reed3 and by others. Very little, however, has been written on the effect of the various elements on the macrostructure of steels, and the purpose of this report is to submit evidence concerning the influence of chromium, nickel and molybdenum on the macrostructure of some 4 by 4-in. ingots cast and treated under closely controlled conditions. Methods and Results The ingots to be described were made in a 60-lb. high-frequency induction furnace at the Watertown Arsenal. Heats were made from a single lot of materials; were molten for the same length of time; tapped at approximately the same temperature into a standard mold preheated in each case to 150º ± 10º C.; and stripped and buried in ashes after 10 min. in the mold. Surrounded by a thickly settled farming country, from which to draw native labor, within easy distance of anthracite and bituminous coal, with ores and limestone near at hand, and with the Susquehanna River as a never-failing water supply, Harrisburg has advantages for manufacturing which warrant the investment of the capital that has already been made, and has a future as a manufacturing city second only to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. THE PENNSYLVANIA STEEL COMPANY, L. S. BENT, SUPERINTENDENT. The works of this company, the largest in Harrisburg, lie between the Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia and Reading Railroads, on. the Pennsylvania Canal, and are essentially devoted to the manufacture of Bessemer steel rails. Increased production through the plant was limited due to thickener circuit constraints. To overcome these constraints and maximize plant throughput to match grinding circuit capability, two options were considered: A. Adding 2000 TPD CIL circuit to operate in parallel with the existing CCD circuit. B. Adding a CIL circuit to treat the entire 4600 TPD while retaining some thickeners for tailings thickening. Option B was selected based on simplified plant operations, reduced operating costs, minimal capital requirements, reduced solution losses, and bullion grade improvement.

Cemented rockfill (CRF) is being used to backfill primary and secondary stopes at the Eagle Mine, an underground nickel and copper mine operated by Lundin Mining. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) are conducting cooperative research with the mine staff to determine if the size of a CRF sample affects its measured strength properties. Based on previous research by NIOSH, cylindrical samples of CRF ranging in size from six to eighteen inches in diameter were cast at the mine and cured underground. The samples were later transported to the SMRD laboratory and the Michigan Technological University where tests were conducted to determine the strength and elastic properties of the CRF. To further analyze the relationship between backfill density and compressive strength, different ASTM International compaction techniques were used to cast the samples. For comparison, tests were also conducted on in-situ core samples that were drilled from a stope which had been backfilled with the same CRF mix. The data collected from this study not only improves our understanding of CRF in-situ properties but also helps optimize Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) methods for backfill preparation and testing.

This paper describes research at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo., to improve blasting techniques and reduce breaking costs. Many of the conclusions are applicable to any mining operation. Experiments Were conducted on many phases of blasting. The effectiveness of various grades of explosives was compared, and several different drill-hole patterns were tried in heading rounds. An experiment was conducted to determine the maximum effective burden for various diameter blast holes. High-speed motion-picture studies were made of blasts, and the time for initial movement of rock after detonation of the explosive was measured. Experiments with millisecond-delay detonators in heading rounds proved that, when used properly, these detonators result in improved fragmentation, economical use of explosive, and compact, easily loaded muck piles.
