A gold-silver-lead-zinc deposit at Montana Tunnels, Jefferson County, Montana is located in a diatreme of middle Eocene age (45 to 50 m.y.). Sulfide minerals within the diatreme occur as disseminations, veinlets, and locally as breccia matrix. Principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. The diatreme is a matrix-rich quartz latitic breccia with a fine grained rather soft matrix and heterolithic clasts. The ore deposit contains approximately 50 million tons of ore at a grade of 0.025 oz/ton Au, 0.5 oz/ton Ag, 0.25 % Pb, and 0.65 % Zn. Mining is by open pit methods. The original process flowsheet included flotation and cyanide leaching. Problems with the leaching circuit led to a change to the straight flotation process which is presently in use. To maintain a reason-ably uniform feed material, blending of ore is required for grades of four metals as well as for ore hardness and oxidation.

"Natural resource agencies, under various regulatory authorities, are challenged with permitting underwater explosive use while at the same time protecting aquatic resources. Deciding on whether or not to allow use of explosives requires striking a balance between development and aquatic resource protection. A company’s goal in underwater explosive use is to select methods that are both expedient and cost effective. The use of explosives is often the best alternative for engineering reasons or economic considerations. Over and above legal requirements, indiscriminate destructionof fish and other aquatic resources is not in a company’s best interests because of concerns relatingto public image, as well as the need to secure future contracts."

A heavy mineral deposit about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length, 0.13 km (0.08 mile) in width and averaging about 3 m (10 ft) in thickness is exposed approximately 130 km (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert county, CO near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy-mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Ga. Thus, Titanium ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

About 15 years ago the debate on the reliability of sampling procedures for agricultural food and feed commodities was initiated by a few brave scientists who questioned the representativeness of what, at the time, were routine sampling procedures established exclusively on the basis of tradition and practical feasibility. Over time several national and international organisations contributed to the discussion, developing standards and publishing papers either to underline the fact that sampling is always a source of error, in itself, which cannot be overlooked, or to minimise the relevance of sampling on the basis of argumentations linked to time and money limitations. The latter dominated, but is nevertheless impossible to accept from both a scientific and a responsible management perspective. Here the author presents an historical overview of these past 15 years, illustrating the most controversial issues, reporting major achievements in food/feed sampling, highlighting milestones, as well as unresolved problems that still need the attention and contribution from the sampling community. The need to incorporate Theory of Sampling (TOS) into food/feed safety assessment (pre-market), as well as into food/feed safety monitoring (post-market) has recently been highlighted, and the practical applicability of TOS to base food/feed safety decisions on representative sampling, has been explored and documented via concrete examples of risk analysis in different areas of food/feed industrial production chains. Now it is time to move forward and ensure that TOS is fully integrated into the well-established Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) / World Health Organization (WHO) risk assessment approach, in order to guarantee a transparent and correct universal frame for risk assessment and the subsequent management decision-making process. WCSB8 offers the ideal platform to explore the best way to do so, switching from a theoretical discussion of correct sampling principles for food and feed agricultural commodities to practical recommendations in the interest of consumers, worldwide. These 15 years have also been a personal journey of interesting dimensions, indeed a veritable roller-coaster ride in-and-out of the scientific, technological, industrial and (last but not least) regulatory worlds. The start was WCSB2 in 2004, when I flew to Australia to discover if in other areas sampling had been identified as an unavoidable issue and, if so, what the solution was. There, I found a good travel companion who today is still on my side, to assemble the puzzle and explore how to shape the future, to concretely answer to the 15 years’ quest for proper sampling in the assessment and monitoring of food/feed safety.CITATION:Paoletti, C, 2017. Blasting operations are an essential element in the recovery of our Nation?s mineral resources. The mining industry uses billions of pounds of explosives annually. The majority of blasting occurs in surface mining operations. Blasting results in the fragmentation and often the projection of rocks. Frequently, the rocks are thrown beyond the expected limits. Flyrock and failure to secure the blasting area dominate blasting-related accidents in mining, especially in surface mining. Blasting accidents in the mining industry tend to result in critical injuries or fatalities. Accident reports and information collected from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and other government agencies provide supporting evidence. According to the data collected, blasting-related accidents (in mining) were 11 times more severe than all other types of mining accidents. Blasting accidents are not unique to mining operations - the same situation exists in the construction field. In this paper the authors have compiled a list of the primary causes of flyrock and the failure to secure the blast area. In the next phase of this project, typical blasting scenarios will be reviewed which will highlight the main reasons flyrock and/or lack of blast area security occur. This will alert miners and construction workers to the current problems/hazards associated with blasting and to identify other safety measures to protect personnel.

A group of 23 underweight men weighing less than 50 kg were subjected to an acclimatization procedure in which the work rate was gradually increased from 35Watts on the first day to 70Watts on the eighth day. Excessively high body temperatures and heart rates were observed on these subjects throughout the acclimatization period and on their performance they must be rated as heat-intolerant. It can be concluded that such underweight men should not be subjected to acclimatization at such high work rates and that they should not be allocated to tasks involving these rates in a hot environment. The fact that their body surface areas are inadequate to enable them to get rid of the internal heat produced during strenuous work plus their low work capacities are the major reasons for their inability to tolerate heat.

Over the last decade, lower ore grades and deeper mine environments have demanded that mining companies develop new technologies (tools and processes) to ensure a mine?s economic sustainability. At Inco Ltd., this demand has lead to the focus of technological development within the area of automation. Delineation (Drilling and Interpretation) is a key step in the determination of ore grade and location and therefore was chosen as a priority area for enhancement through automation. Focusing on the tools (the diamond drill) automation, significant benefits have been consistently achieved in terms of productivity, process efficiency, operational safety, cost reduction, component life cycles and machine reliability. It is suggested that optimum benefits have yet to be achieved, and will not be achieved until the human aspects of automation have been properly addressed. Since project inception, the human aspects of automation were recognized as critical to the success of the diamond drill automation project. However, it was only upon the installation of the Automated Diamond Drill in the field and its continued use on a daily basis that this issue received due attention. The human aspects of automation can be broadly addressed as economic, physical and psychological. This paper, with examples from the field, will discuss the human aspects of automation in each of these areas. The paper will draw from observations and experiences acquired throughout this project and recommend implementation strategies that should be utilized in future automation projects to enhance both the acceptance of automation and the success of the automated process itself.

Studies of liquid-vapor equilibria of gas mixtures at the Bureau of Mines Amarillo Helium Plant Laboratory require that the equilibrium cell be maintained uniformly at any desired temperature from approximately room temperature to -320° F. The temperature-control system must also tolerate a substantial heat input, in the form of warm gas flowing into the cell, without loss of control. Temperatures between the sublimation temperature of carbon dioxide (-109° F.) and the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (320° F.) are usually obtained by methods utilizing a hydrocarbon liquid bath cooled by liquid nitrogen.4/5/6/7/ Owing to the fire hazard attending such baths, a safer method of temperature control was desirable.

One of the principal uses of polarized light in metallurgy is to show the granular structure of metals by contrasting reflections. This use is confined largely to anisotropic metals, such as beryllium, tin, magnesium, and the like.1 Recently, Hone and Pearson2 have extended the use of polarized light to include the isotropic metal aluminum. This was made possible by the formation of an anodic film that was optically anisotropic and that had a fixed and reproducible structural relationship to the grains in the substrata. With their method, it was possible to indicate localized textures in annealed aluminum sheet. In the course of an investigation of plastic deformation at the National Bureau of Standards, it was found that the isotropic single phase alloy Monel could be made optically anisotropic by treatment with the usual Monel contrast etchant. Experiments soon showed that dif- , ferences in orientation could be detected easily. Previous investigations involving the use of polarized light have been restricted to annealed metals. In this paper it will be shown that inhomo-geneous plastic deformation which results in lattice bending and development of deformation bands, experienced by individual grains in polycrystalline Monel, is revealed in the microstruc-ture. This interpretation of the micro-structure was confirmed by a study of slip lines formed after prior plastic strain. Materials and Procedure The material used was Monel, the chemical composition of which was C—0.17 pet, Mn—1.28 pet, Fe—1.61 pet, S—0.009 pet, Si—0.17 pet, Cu— 30.70 pet, Ni—66.04 pet. The material was divided into 2 lots which were treated as follows: Lot A was heated at 1700°F for 3 hr to produce a fully annealed, coarse grained structure. Lot B was heated at 1400°F for 1 hr to produce a close approximation of a fully annealed structure without appreciable increase in the grain size of the original material. After each of these heat treatments the material was cooled in air. Samples for metallographic examination were cut from tensile and compression test specimens and were prepared by grinding on lead-tin laps, followed by electrolytic polishing, † Etching and the development of ridges were avoided by keeping the voltage above 3.8 and by preventing contamination of the polishing solution with water. Monel, when polished and treated with most etchants, is optically isotropic. However, when given a light etch for about 4 sec with the Monel contrast solution the surface of the metal becomes optically active. The microstructure when observed under crossed nicols* appears different from that viewed by ordinary light. This is shown by a comparison of micrographs made of the same area of a plastically deformed specimen using polarized light (Fig la) and white light (Fig 16). If Monel, which has been lightly treated with the contrast etchant, is slightly deformed by compression, rectangular figures are apparent over the specimen. However, within too short a period to be photographed, these rectangles become circular, probably because of surface tension effects within the etched film. The two observations,

"This paper presents a technical description of an experimental procedure developed for the geotechnical characterization of granular soils conditioned for EPB tunneling using a modified direct shear box. As the main concerning parameters of the conditioned soil mass were their undrained properties, in order to preserve its pseudo-fluid characteristics, a watertight direct shear apparatus was constructed. A comparison between the results obtained under dry, saturated and conditioned conditions is presented. INTRODUCTION EPB shield machines have been used for tunneling excavation in many different types of soils thanks to the use of soil conditioning agents. These modify the properties of the soil into that of a plastic paste, thus permitting the homogeneous flow of the excavated soil from the tunnel face through the bulk chamber, the screw conveyor and finally the conveyor belt. Moreover this technique allows controlling the face pressure and its regulation in the bulk chamber, preventing water inflow when tunneling below the water table. Further advantages are a drop of the cutter head and screw conveyor torque and reduction of the friction between metallic parts and the soil, consequently reducing wear phenomena (Merritt & Mair, 2006; Vinai et al., 2007; Borio et al., 2010; Thewes & Budach, 2010; Herrenknecht et al., 2011; Barbero et al., 2012; Peila, 2014). Several studies have investigated the possibility of conditioning and the chemical materials to be used in different types of soils, mainly subdivided into three groups: cohesionless soils (sand and gravel), silts and clays, and rock masses. This various researches have set up several laboratory procedures for these achievements before and after soil conditioning, as stated in Thewes & Budach (2010) and Peila (2014) (for cohesionless soils), in Thewes & Burger (2005), Hollmann & Thewes (2013), Zumsteg et al.(2012) (for clay), in Peila et al. (2013) and Martinelli et al. (2015a) (for rock mass). Such tests should be simple to execute, reliable and easy to interpret at the in-situ excavation step. The reduction of shear strength is necessary in EPB operations, since it allows an effective transmission of the pressure from the material itself to the front. In some cases the slump is not sufficient to return a reliable result on the shear strength reduction, as in some cases some materials are behaving differently. Therefore this research is aimed to study this aspect more in detail, in order to show the effectiveness of the soil conditioning process on the material to be excavated."

The aquatic hazard classification system of the OECD and EU requires that sparingly soluble metal substances (SSMS) be tested using the OECD Dissolution/Transformation protocol in order to quantify the release of the ecotoxicological relevant species (dissolved ions). The SSMS category contains massive forms of metals, which due to their low solubility and slow transformation characteristics are a special case. The main factors that produce the release of metal into solution are exposed surface loading, pH, and stirring rate. The classification system at present prefers the use of mass loading as opposed to surface loading, in which case the amount of metal released will primarily be a function of the pH, and mass loading. Within the framework of the European Copper Voluntary Risk Assessment, coordinated by the European Copper Institute, we have proposed and developed a methodological procedure in which we demonstrate that surface area is an intrinsic property of a SSMS and we link the exposed surface loading to the toxicity reference value in order to obtain an aquatic hazard classification for massive metals. As example, the aquatic hazard classification for copper massive will be discussed. This approach is recommended for metal massives and metal powders.

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

As recently as the late 1920's there Were few indications that a 15-million-dollar-a-year industry would ever grow out of the mineralogic curiosity vermiculite. Today, it is an important industrial commodity, used primarily as an insulating material and lightweight aggregate, but with a wide range of other applications. The quantity of crude vermiculite produced and used in the United States increased 14-fold in the 17 years between 1935 and 1951. The vermiculite minerals are of secondary origin, formed by hydrothermal alteration of an ultrabasic igneous rock, generally pyroxenite, or by alteration of phlogopite or biotite mica or possibly other similar minerals. According to different authorities, vermiculite may originate either by direct hydrothermel means, by the weathering of biotite or phlogopite, or by a combination of these two agencies. Vermiculites frequently occur at or near the contacts of an acid intrusive rock, especially a pegmatite dike, with a basic or ultrabasic country rock.

The inherent difficulties of zinc smelting arise from the fact that metallic zinc is volatilized at the reducing temperature of zinc oxide and thus is liberated in the form of a vapor. This vapor must be subsequently condensed to obtain metallic zinc, first in molten and eventually in solid form. Zinc vapor is sensitive to oxidation not only by air but by combustion gases containing carbon dioxide. It is, therefore, necessary to carry out both the reduction and the condensation operations in a closed system consisting of an externally heated muffle with attached condenser from which extcrnal oxidizing agencies are excluded. However, the reoxidation of zinc vapor cannot be entirely prevented by excluding external sources of oxidation. Internal sources of oxidation are necessarily present when oxidic zinc ores are reduced by a carbonaceous reducing agent. The reduction reactions themselves involve, first, the production of carbon monoxide in an amount at least equal in volume to the zinc vapor produced in the reaction, and, second, the formation of carbon dioxide. Not all of the carbon dioxide is reduced again to carbon monoxide by the excess carbon in the time available, and the slightly oxidizing condition, which results, seriously affects the efficiency of the condensation of the zinc vapor to the metallic state. In the past the difficulties arising from these causes have limited practical zinc smelting on an industrial scale to the use of small retorts equipped with small condensers. The retorts had to be small, because a closed refractory container capable of excluding oxidizing gases from the heating chamber surrounding the retort could not be built in large dimensions. The size was also limited because ordinary refractories when thin enough to conduct heat readily are not capable of sustaining a heavy load of charge at high temperature. Moreover, a loose charge of zinc ore and carbonaceous reducing material such as fine anthracite coal or coke breeze is a poor conductor of heat, thus limiting the cross section of the retort. "The Port Radium leaching plant of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, produces 450 t./d. of sulphuric acid leach liquor containing l. 73 g. /I. U 308. After solvent extraction, the waste solution is discarded at 0.002 g./l. U30s for a recovery of 99.8 to 99.9 per cent. The solvent is acidified with weak sulphuric acid, loaded to 4.5 g./l. U80:1 in three-stage extraction, scrubbed with water, and stripped with soda-ash solution in single-stage stripping. Caustic removes the UaOs from the pregnant strip solution as a precipitate. The slurry is filtered, re-pulped with water, and re-filtered. The pressed precipitate at 81 to 82 per cent equivalent U30s is dried and packaged. The carbon-ate filtrate is cooled to remove sodium sulphate build-up and carbonated to convert excess caustic. Reagent consumptions are 4.1, 0.22, and 0.39 pounds per 1,000 gallons of pregnant solution for Diesel oil, amine, and alcohol, respectively. Caustic consumption averages 1.3 to 1.4 pounds per pound U3O8.Extraction and stripping is accomplished in sheet-iron mixer-settlers lined with Phenoline. Piping on both circuits is Schedule 80 polyvinyl chloride. Valves are straightway Buna N lined with American Hycar diaphagms. Extensive instrumentation ensures good metallurgy with a minimum of variations and labour. Mixing in a continuous organic medium and careful acidity control are required to minimize third-phase formations. Heating the precipitate slurry is conducive to good filtering in Perrin presses with neoprene-coated, rolled-steel sectors. Sodium sulphate is crystallized from carbonate filtrate solution by batchwise cooling to 54°F. with lake water."

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have studied the influence of headgate side ventilation controls near the longwall start-up room on the formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground coal longwall bleeder ventilated gobs. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study the formation of methane-air mixtures in the gob, start-up room, and bleeder entries. The relative change in size and location of EGZs are examined in response to ventilation controls in the headgate side bleeder entries near the start-up room. Modeling suggests that adjustments to the ventilation controls can be made to minimize the size of the EGZ. However the EGZ may form in or around active working areas regardless of the ventilation control settings. Research found regulators on the crosscuts into start-up room and first entry inby can force air into to crosscuts outby the start-up room causing more air to flow through the gob. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall mine ventilation systems may operate with either a bleeder ventilated gob or a progressively sealed gob. Bleeder ventilated gobs must meet the standards for safe operation of the bleeder system by examining bleeder system effectiveness. As defined in the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Program Policy Letter (PPL) No. P13-V-12 (MSHA 2013), the pillared area or gob is “any area where a reduction in pillar size has occurred during retreat mining” and includes the “caved and broken material, the interstices within the caved material, and the open spaces surrounding the caved material.” The PPL further states that the intended purpose of ventilating the gob is “to protect active workings from the hazards of methane accumulations …” The requirements for operating a bleeder system as stated in The United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 2013) Title 30 §75.334(b) is to pass ventilation air though the gob “and to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures [from the gob] away from active workings and into a return air course …” where the concentration cannot exceed 2 percent methane (CFR 30 § 75.323). Further clarification of the bleeder system as described in the PPL states the following: “A bleeder system includes the area from which pillars are wholly or partially recovered, bleeder entries, bleeder connectors, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air movement through the area. Bleeder entries are air courses designed and maintained as part of the bleeder system.”"

I. Introduction. This cavern was discovered Oct. 32,1904, by Mr. Charles 8. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3,1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanging map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. 11. Location. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier station, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier station, which is also a hotel of the railway company. Figs. 3, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. Mount Isa Mines Limited first installed electronic data processing equipment in 1959. The decision to replace this equipment with a computer was motivated by the need for greater processing power and the availability of new and less expensive computers. Consideration of hardware software and delivery features of available equipment, resulted in the selectIon of an ICT 1900 series computer which was installed in March 1966. Special air-conditioning and power stabilization equipment was also required.Systems design and programming was carried out by personnel recruited from within the Company and trained by the computer manufacturer. Early work was hindered by the problems of remote location.Initial applications were basically accounting functions whIch were taken over from the EDP installation. Subsequently computer applIcatIOns of a more complex technical nature have been undertaken. Future work will include both "scientific" and data processing applications.

A real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitor has been developed on the basis of the successful National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) designed Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit. The objectives of a recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study were to modify the PDM to measure the submicrometre fraction of the aerosol in a real-time monitoring underground instrument. Mine testing focused on use of the monitor in engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved. Studies, including a selection during Longwall (LW) moves as described in this paper, demonstrated how DPM concentrations from vehicles fluctuate under varying ventilation and operational conditions. Correlation between the current SKC DPM measurement system and real-time DPM monitors were conducted and results from six mines show a correlation between elemental carbon (EC) and the new monitor DPM mass ranging from .51 to .81 with R2 >.90. These differences are suspected to be due to variations from mine to mine in aspects such as mine atmospheric contamination, vehicle fleet variations, fuel type, engine maintenance, engine combustion efficiency, engine behaviour or interference from other submicrometre aerosol. Real-time monitoring readily reflects the movement of individual diesel vehicles and allows pin-pointing of high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. DPM monitoring approaches that have been available for some time based on shift average monitoring do not readily allow successful engineering evaluation exercises to determine acceptability of pollution levels. Identification of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices t o reduce miners? exposures without waiting for laboratory analysis results.

This case study focuses on analysis of sounds inside a house induced by blasts as result of surface mining coal in West Virginia and how to better communicate technical information to the public. The field study included a house wide vibration and sound monitoring system installed in a home which was subjected to blasts at varied distances and direction. The structure response was separated into ground vibration and airblast induced movement due to the differences in their times of arrival. This signal was then compared to the sounds recorded to determine which component of blast (ground vibration or airblast) induced the maximum sound. Findings shows that blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast. While for blasts beyond this distance the maximum sound response was caused by ground vibration without exception. The kitchen generally created the most sound. The second phase of the study was to gauge the public’s response or preference to technical information. Three hundred and forty eight (348) telephone surveys were conducted in Logan and Boone counties West Virginia. Based on the survey, the public prefers units of pounds per square inch (psi) for airblast and millimeters of displacement for ground vibration. Ultimately a public relations plan was developed based on the results.
