(New York -Meeting, February, 1912.) TORCHES were used by the early Romans for mine-lighting, and these were followed by open lamps or earthen jars filled with tallow or oil, and later by candles. In early coal-mining, explosive gases seldom occurred, and, if they were encountered, the danger of explosion was materially diminished by the absence of any ventilating-system and the consequent insufficient circulation of air to form with the methane an explosive mixture. As the art advanced, the danger of fire-damp became more apparent, and methods for testing the air were resorted to as early as in the fifteenth century. The method of testing consisted in lowering a clog in a, basket down the shaft. As soon as he encountered fire-damp he would commence to howl, after which he was withdrawn, and a leafy bush was fastened to the end of the rope and run rapidly up and clown the shaft. This so disturbed the accumulation of gas as to cause it to rise out of the shaft. Later this odd method of testing was improved upon through the discovery that a light inserted in a body of fire-dam p would produce a blue flame. Candles were used for this purpose, and, when fire-damp was thus discovered, brushing or some other primitive method of fanning was resorted to for driving out the gas. In some instances the gas was burned away, regardless of the danger thereby incurred. A man, wearing a well-moistened coat and a mask with glass spectacles, descended in the mine a few hours before each shift. With a long stick, to which was fastened a burning torch or candle, lie would crawl on the floor with the stick so raised that the light would sweep the roof and ignite the gas which it encountered. Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

AT a recent meeting of the Utah Section. A.I.M.E., P. D. Nielson, general plant superintendent of the new Geneva steel plant at Provo, Utah, spoke on "General Operations of the Geneva Plant." Mr. Nielson explained that the plant was located at Provo, Utah, on account of railroad facilities, the proximity of coal, iron, and limestone, and the nearness of water for operating the plant. Water probably was the most important item in making the decision.

"The Regional Connector project is a complex subway light-rail project that runs through the heart of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The design-build contract was awarded in April 2014 to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc., and their designer team consisting of Hatch Mott McDonald (HMM) and subconsultants. The project broke ground on Sept. 30, 2014 and is expected to be completed in winter 2021-2022. The main components of the project consist of 6.4-m (21-ft) diameter twin-bored tunnels, three crosspassages, a 87-m (287-ft) long crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations, and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda and 1st Streets. The project map is shown in Fig. 1. The design and construction challenges associated with each of these main components are discussed in the following sections.Project designTunnels. The Regional Connector tunnels are located primarily within the Fernando formation consisting predominantly of extremely weak to very weak, massive, clayey siltstone. About 305 m (1,000 ft) of tunnels on the eastern end are in alluvium and mixed face of Fernando formation and alluvium. The tightest curve of the tunnel alignment is 178 m (583 ft) in radius. The tunnels were designed with a reinforced precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) to be used with an earth balance pressurized (EPB) tunnel boring machine. The PCTL ring is 5.5 m (18 ft-10 in.) inside diameter, 27 cm (10.5 ft) thick, 1.5 m (5 ft) long, and consists of five segments and a key. The segments were designed with 6,500 psi concrete, 80 ksi yield strength wire rebar, convex joint surfaces to enhance seismic performance, and a dosage of 1.7 lbs polypropylene microfibers per cubic yard of concrete for fire resistance. The rings are designed with a right ring and left ring pattern and a taper of 3.8 cm (1.5 ft) to allow for alignment curve negotiation. Figure 2 shows typical sections of the PCTL. The structural lining design was modeled using FLAC 3D. Four consecutive rings were modeled with 32 dowel connection. Loading considered in the lining design includes temporary ground load during excavation, long-term ground loads, seismic loads and train loads. The seismic loads on the PCTL were simulated with the racking deformation applied at vertical boundaries of the model. Due to variation of geologic condition along the tunnel alignment and different surcharge requirements, three different types of reinforcement (typical, heavy and extra heavy) were designed. The typical type PCTL was required in Fernando formation, the heavy type was required in alluvium or mixed-face condition, and the extra heavy type was required in alluvium and underneath the Japanese Village Plaza where a surcharge of 1,000 psf was required."

Kansanshi Copper Smelter commenced operation in March 2015. The smelter features four Peirce- Smith Converters (PSCs) operated in a three hot, two blowing configuration. This paper describes some of the process automation and design features implemented to maximize operational and environmental performance. To ensure that the converters were easy to operate, efficient, and were protected in emergency situations such as power failures or loss of tuyere air supply a significant focus was placed on automated sequences initiated by “one button” operator commands or otherwise automatically by the Distributed Control System (DCS). Examples include: main converter roll-in and roll-out sequences; emergency roll-out in the event of power failure; and the charging sequences for reagents (silica and reverts). Other automated features configured for the PSCs were specifically aimed at maximizing converter capacity and reducing the environmental impact from fugitive emissions. These features include: “one button” in-stack charging; automated restriction of blowing rate based on the available acid plant capacity; and fully-automated control logic for the Secondary Ventilation System. In-stack charging allows anode furnace oxide slag to be poured into the PSCs while the converters are still blowing and still sending off-gas to the acid plant. PSC Secondary Ventilation control logic was configured to require minimum input from the operators while ensuring maximum utilization of the available draft from the ventilation system. Highly automated PSC controls contribute to high utilization, averaging 41.2 in-stack hours per day. INTRODUCTION Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS) is located near Solwezi at Kansanshi copper mine in Zambia's Northwestern province. The smelter treats concentrate produced at Kansanshi mine as well as Sentinel mine located 150 km west of Solwezi. Four Peirce-Smith Converters (PSCs) are installed at KCS. The nominal capacity of each converter is to treat 350 t of copper matte and produce up to 250 t of blister copper per batch. Normally three PSCs are hot, with two able to operate (produce off-gas), and the third converter on hot standby. The fourth converter is normally under cold repairs. The blister charge size is relatively low for the matte charged due to the unavailability of tank house or other high copper scrap.

Latin America is in the path of economic growth characterized by increased privatization, joint-venture projects, and reduced trade barriers. Privatization is changing the industrial operating mode from Government-owned/Government-operated to a privately-owned/government-regulated regime. The establishment of joint ventures, such as in construction and management of infrastructure, energy and mining projects, and deregulated industries (electricity/gas/ telecommunications), is now a common practice in the region. These changes, coupled with the growing awareness of environmental protection issues, have led to a sincere effort on the part of the countries of Latin America to establish reasonable environmental regulations and controls (RERCs) for all industries, including mining and energy, for the benefit of present and future generations. However, RERCs require further consideration of many factors with respect to environmental, geologic, economic, and social impacts in the region. The process must find a balance between the need to sustain profitable operations and the need to adequately protect the environment. While striving to find a balance between continued industrial profitability and environmental protection, the RERCs must be scientifically sound, pragmatic, flexible, and enforceable. There has been worldwide attention focused on the environment, and international symposia have been held on such issues as global warming, water pollution, air pollution, and hazardous wastes. Organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States have performed rather extensive studies on the environment for various industries and activities, and have developed some broad general plans to address environmental concerns. This technical information is available for the asking, and should be considered a starting point for countries embarking on the passage and enforcement of their own RERCs.

The degree of economic, progress of a nation is measured by its possession and use of energy, sources. The future of coal in the West hinges on its ability to participate and grow in the energy market. A source of energy is, in the long run, only as good as the ability of the industry to develop its reserves economically. The economic development of the tremendous coal reserves, literally hundreds of billions of tons of coal in the States of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona, poses a very real question in the light of the known mining technology of our day. Basically in America today, coal is mined from the earth either by the strip mine or underground mine method; in the West, the large long-term, contracts now in force with utilities are mostly from coal mines utilizing the strip mine method. However, the preponderance of the known coal reserves of the West are located deep underground and will have to be mined by the various; underground mining processes. The problems encountered in the West with regard to underground mining vary from state to state but, on the whole, do not present what might be considered a miner's bonanza. I do not mean to' infer that the underground coal of the West is unmineable, but I do want to emphasize that the tremendous reserve figures do not present a true picture in the light of present day technology.

Large reserves of high calcium limestone have been outlined in the Redwall formation at Nelson, Arizona. Geologic mapping, core drilling and shallow seismic refraction studies have outlined more than 100 million tons of high quality, chemical and metallurgical grade limestone in the Mooney Falls member of the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. Well developed Karst zones in the Redwall were delineated by field mapping, seismic profiling and core drilling. Development of large reserves of high quality, thick beds of limestone near the present mine and rail facilities was the basis for the current mine and plant expansion. When completed in 1978 the planned 1800 Tpd production will represent the largest lime operation in the Western United States.

Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved that by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate can be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there been an indication that this method may become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-steam distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming loss as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes the construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractionating column and gives certain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made. For example, a study could be made of the distillates obtained up to the point of cracking of the charge if a topped crude were charged to the still; if the still was used as a rerun unit for lubricating distillates a study of nearly the entire charge could be made. Only topped crude has been charged to the still so far, and therefore this paper is limited to the results obtained from the distillation of such a charge. The results so far obtained indicate that such an apparatus is valuable in a study of different crude petroleums as sources of lubricating distillates.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Plastics global annual production exceeds 250 million tons and more than 40% of the total plastic production is used as packaging materials. In recent years polymeric materials derived from biomass have received great attention due to scarce petroleum resources and environmental concerns. PLA is one of the most extensively studied bio-based and bio-compostable aliphatic polyesters; nevertheless, high brittleness and low toughness limits its application. Blending PLA with PBAT (Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)), an aliphatic-aromatic copolyester, was the solution found due to its high toughness and biodegradability. Differences between PLA and PBAT solubility parameter values lead to the formation of immiscible blends as well as reduction in their mechanical performance besides a poor morphology; so, 5% of pre-irradiated PLA and a previous compatibilized PLA/PBAT (EcovioTM) were added to PLA/PBAT blends in order to improve miscibility phases. Investigations were accomplished on phase morphology (SEM), mechanical properties, thermal behavior and X-ray diffractions (XRD).

Vulnerability is a measure of the extent to which a community, structure, services or geographic area is likely to be damaged or disrupted by the impact of particular hazard. Current asset management practices focuses on studying factors that affect performance of isolated infrastructure networks and model a set of actions to control the expected performance of these networks. This approach ignores the underlying spatial and functional interdependencies among these infrastructure networks and their vulnerability. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new method that recognizes the effect of spatial and functional interdependencies on vulnerability rating of water, sewer and road networks. The proposed method consists of: 1) risk assessment model, 2) interdependency assessment model and 3) vulnerability assessment model. The risk model is composed of two modules: 1) water and sewer risk module and 2) road infrastructure module. The water and sewer risk module will cluster these assets into three risk categories based on environmental, social, operational and economical factors. The road infrastructure module will cluster road assets into three risk categories by using rational factorial technique based on road type, serviceability index, traffic load, and freeze and thaw index. The interdependency model will deploy the risk ranking to perform geospatial analysis in ArcGIS which results in determining the interdependent layers of waters, sewers and roads. The vulnerability model will deploy fuzzy neural networks technique to determine the vulnerability rating based on spatial and functional interdependencies. The fuzzy neural networks are utilized to overcome the lack of historical data and incorporate experts? preferences for establishing the knowledge base for vulnerability assessment. The expected contribution of this framework is to aid decision makers in understanding the interdependencies between civil infrastructure assets and to which extent such interdependencies can compromise assets performance.

This paper will discuss the design analysis of sheet pile cofferdams for static and dynamic blast loads. Following construction of the new Willis Avenue Bridge across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in-river piers No. 9 and No. 10 from the former bridge were demolished, partially by explosive charges. The blast at Pier 10 was conducted first and though the demolition charge was relatively small, it gave confidence that the sheeting could be designed to resist the blast load. This paper primarily summarizes our analysis and performance of a sheet pile cofferdam at Pier 9 used to withstand the larger blast loads, contain the blast debris, and allow excavation of the pier below the existing river bed mudline. The program NLFlex was used to predict stresses and deformations of the cofferdams under dynamic blast loads, using simplified equations to estimate the underwater blast pressures. Specifically, the analysis focused on the stresses in the struts, waler beam, sheet pile interlocks and connection of the sheeting to the waler beam. Design included allowing plastic deformations and limited rupture of the sheet pile interlocks under the blast loading. Comparisons are made between stresses assessed by the dynamic finite element modeling and empirical relationships used within the industry. The performance of the system after the actual blast is discussed as well as details of the performance of welded vs. bolted connections within the system.

Equipment has been designed and fabricated for study of the vaporization of oil during gas-cycling operations, A sand-packed steel tube, which can be rotated to minimize gravity drainage, is used as a model oil reservoir. A minute windowed cell at the discharge end of the tube through which the liquid-gas interface may be observed, makes possible the separate removal of produced free gas and gas-saturated oil. The operation of the model oil reservoir, and auxiliary equipment, are described by use of a schmatic flow diagram. Details of the specially designed equipment are illustrated by isometric and pictorial drawings, and a description of the experimental procedure is given.

Geologists or mining engineers familiar with geology are frequently requested by mine operators to give correlation in-formation regarding some mining property with respect to an adjacent area on one at some greater distance. It is the object of this article to mention a few of the difficulties involved in securing this information and to point out some of the salient factors upon which correlation is dependent. In view of the nature of the following discussion, a brief statement of the general character of coal formations .. seems appropriate. Coal formations, by reason of their environment of deposition which is in fresh or brackish water, exhibit the features common to continental deposits, in contrast to those of marine deposits. Such deposits are characterized by rapid variation in thickness and in lithological character both later-ally and vertically. (Plate 1 A). They consist essentially of sandstones and clay shales with all gradations between them, and also a few beds of coal and frequently some conglomerates.

The mainstream of copper smelting processes in the world today is a combination of Outokumpu type Flash smelting and PS (Pierse Smith) converting process. Presently it can be estimated that about 50% of the worldwide copper production is produced by the Flash smelting process and 80% by the PS converting process. PS converting process due to its operational flexibility and despite its batch character of operation has been widely used in many smelters for more than 100 years. However, an environmental issue has been pointed out related to this process because of the difficulty of handling the fugitive gases. Recently several copper smelters in the world have been newly constructed and others have executed major modification and modernization, The continuous converting process has been applied in many of them instead of PS converting process. This paper compares PS to the emerging continuous converting process and makes a prospect of the future of the copper converting process.

Several hundred membrane - filter tests were made as part of a program to develop equipment and procedures to evaluate the quality of waters and to determine the quality of water suitable to efficiently flood oil sands of known permeability . Results indicated that neither the color of the water nor that of the precipitate on a membrane filter is a criterion for determining the quality of injection water . Reasons for poor water quality include poor operation of filtering systems , dirty filtering aggregates , excessive amounts of oil in injection water , commingling of incompatible waters , and excessive use of chemicals . A good water is required to efficiently flood sands of low permeability , but fair results may be obtained in flooding more permeable sands with poorer quality water .

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations is within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.
