Between the main fan and the coalface in a mine a lot of air is lost through leakage at stoppings, doors, air-crossing etc. so that a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan in order that the stipulated quantity of air reaches the face. Stoppings are of vital importance not only for effective ventilation of underground mines but also for isolation of areas affected by fire or susceptible to spontaneous heating. Generally, isolation stoppings are made of brick in cement mortar. If the area is far from the pit or unapproachable, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to build these stoppings. To overcome these difficulties, particularly near fire affected zones, an alternate successful attempt was made in Indian mines to make a plug underground, from surface through borehole, using cement concrete. In this paper the salient features of the methodology adopted for construction of the plug and the experimental procedure for the measurement of air leakage by SF6 tracer gas is described. Measurements of air leakage through rows of ventilation stoppings in two mines viz. Moira (Jambad and Kajora seams) and Kuardi11/12 (Niga seam) collieries of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) have been incorporated. Results of experiments conducted at the Central Mining Research Institute (C.M.R.I) to determine leakage through25 and 38 cm thick brick stoppings are also discussed. Results of all these studies are compared, which show that the efficacy and reliability of the remote filled cement concrete plug in respect of air permeability is satisfactory.

The Bureau of Mines Solid Waste Program is directed toward three main areas of research: (1) Extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) recovery of mineral and metal values from wastes generated in the industrial extraction, processing, and utilization of raw materials and mineral-base products; and (3) upgrading and utilization of automotive scrap. The Bureau also has a contract and grant program which supplements the in-house research and aids in the training of personnel in the proper management of mineral- and metal-based solid wastes.

Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

"Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."

The iron-ore beneficiation and shiploading facilities of the Marcona Mining Company are at San Nicolas Bay which is on the Peruvian coastal desert about two hundred and seventy miles south of Lima. The mines are at elevation of 2,500 ft. Crude ore is transported from the Mine primary crushers to the beneficiation plants by ten miles of overland belt conveyors. After the predominantly magnetic ore is reduced to minus 3/4 in. in the secondary crushing plant, the ore is ground by rod and ball mills and concentrated with magnetic separators. The concentrate slurry is pumped to a thickening and filtering installation for desliming and dewatering. Pelletizing is accomplished with a Lurgi and also a Dravo-Lurgi machine. Deep-water shiploading facilities are available close to the beneficiation plants. Figure 1 shows a flowsheet of the general operation. Pelletizing operations are scheduled 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. A maximum tonnage rate with a high percentage of operating time is necessary to produce the three and one half million tons per year required from the two pellet lines. Process control is a major responsibility and of primary concern to all Operating personnel. The particle size, moisture, and chemical composition of the filter cake must be closely controlled to get uniform high-grade pellets. Key points are sampled routinely and analyzed on a two-hour basis to provide the necessary structure and chemical data to maintain a superior final product. The iron content of the pellets is held between 65.3 and 65.8 percent with 4.0 percent Si02. Sulfur is below 0.04 percent and copper is below 0.02 percent in the finished pellet.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

"INTRODUCTION A commercial-scale pilot plant for gasification of lignite was completed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak., early in 1945 as an extension of work on, gasification of low-rank coals initiated in a smaller pilot plant at Golden, Colo., during 1943. The development work on this plant was part of a program to make reducing gases from lignite for beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The background of this project has been described in a previous report. 6/ The present report describes the major features of the large pilot plant, a record of experimental operating data during five runs totaling about 1,800 hours, .and results of experimental work on the small pilot plant at Golden during 1945.This project has created considerable interest because heretofore there has been little success in several attempts to gasify American lignites.Furthermore, the methed employed is a departure from conventional processes. Natural lignite is fed continuously into an externally heated annular retort and is converted into water gas by heat conducted through alloy metal walls. Because of the high thermal conductivity of metal, the rate of gasification is several times greater than can be obtained when employing refractory walls. The process has been developed to a part that leaves one major question unanswered. - ""How long will the alloy last under practical operating conditions?"" - and this question has aroussed the interest of the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines in this new development.Owing to the high reactivity of the lower-rank fuels, the water-gas reactions proceed rapidly at medium temperatures of 1,650°F. to 1,800°F. These temperatures can be attained in a reaction zone heated by external means when the temperature of the retort does not exceed 1,900°F. while transferring from 6,000 to 7,000 B.t.u. per hour per square foot. Such rates are several times greater than can be attained through refractory walls as employed in the Didier-Bubaig 7/ and the Ahrens processes. 7/ Therefore, the investment cost of the gas generator per unit of capacity will be considerably lower for the higher-capacity process. However, the maintenance cost of metal vessels will be higher than that of refractory retorts, and this emphasizes the importance of large-scale operation to determine the life of an alloy retort under practical operating. conditions."

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.

Industrial Mineral Fillers, LLC. is in the initial stages of mining and processing Anorthosite (CASPAR TM) at its CASPAR mine located in Soledad Canyon, Los Angeles County, California The CASPAR is being mined from the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. Preliminary results suggest that CASPAR is a desirable alternative to silica sand used in construction applications, such as, stucco, grout, abrasives, and other uses including filtration and golf course recreation sands. With the use of standard ore dressing techniques, CASPAR is suitable for use as a filler in paint, plastics and rubber. Environmentally, CASPAR has advantages over silica sand, in that, there is no detectable Free Silca.

Low metal prices and environmental restrictions are always a challenge for copper smelters operation and its productivity. Thus, in order to reduce production costs and control gas emissions, improvements of the Teniente Converter (CT) operation were made at 110 Smelter Plant of Southern Peru Copper Co., 110, Peru, and the main objective was to increase its capacity for smelting copper concentrates without affecting normal operation. The present work corresponds to a recent study conducted during the normal industrial operation of the Teniente Converter in this plant and, it shows the effect of increasing air oxygen enrichment from 28 to 34% on its productivity. The results show an increasing of concentrate smelting rate from 800 to 1370 tpd and hence a notorious improving in copper production, and practically no effect on the refractory consumption. The increment of the concentrate throughput, increases also the SO2 concentration and the sulfuric acid production, showing the effort done by this operation in order to accomplish the environmental Peruvian regulation.

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. Perlite is an altered rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 wt % water that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam to form lightweight, glass foam. Commercial perlite deposits in New Mexico are well-developed zones of chemical weathering (hydration) superimposed on highly permeable and thick glassy zones at the chilled upper surface and toes of high-silica-rhyolite lava flows and lava domes. The maximum tonnage of glass in these volcanoes was predetermined by their unique eruptive histories. New Mexico perlite production (80% of US production of 571,00 st) is mostly from the 3.9 Ma high-silica-rhyolite lava flows at the No Agua Peaks volcanic center. The primary vent at No Agua is defined by a 900 ft-high rubidium-rich composite lava dome, known as West Peak, that contains minor perlite reserves. Slightly less rubidium-rich lava squeezed out from under the west flank of the dome to form relatively thin (250 ft) but highly vesicular lobate flows that now consist of about 50 % recoverable perlite. Finally, rubidium-poor lavas were extruded from a radial dike on the northeast flank of the dome. These thicker (400 ft) flow lobes contain about 20 % recoverable perlite. The largest mass of lava does not always contain the most perlite. The thinner (west) flow at No Agua yields the largest perlite reserves rather than the large composite lava dome or thicker (east) flow.

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. After the Krupp-Renn process was shown to be unsuitable for treatment of the Greek nickeliferous laterites, the LM process was developed. It involved roasting reduction up to metallic iron in a Rotary Kiln (R/K) and smelting in an Electric Furnace (E/F). Ferronickel (with 15% Ni) produced in the E/F, was upgraded to 90-95% Ni in an 02 converter. Raw Ni was then electrolyzed to pure Ni. The LM process was not applied for very long however, due to various problems. So, the Larco process was developed, i.e., pre-reduction in R/Ks, smelting of the calcine in E/Fs for ferronickel production (15% Ni) and enrichment to 20% Ni, in an O2 converter. Until now, many technological improvements have been invented and applied or adjusted to the process, which have made it a fully reliable and competitive one. sohe of the improvements were the invention and application of a new granulation process for liquid ferronickel, the modification of the existing R/Ks, E/Fs and converters and the design of new ones, and others that are described in the paper. The overarching goal in modern drill and blasting operations is that of optimising mining operations to achieve higher levels of productivity, safety, profitability and sustainability. Air decking, a technique used in drill & blasting to optimise explosive product use while achieving a target rock fragmentation1, is a technique that when executed correctly is proven to achieve consistent results independent of rock strength and the position of the holes (single, multiple, vertical, slanted), as well as being proven to reduce super-fragmentation (under-size or fines) while able to achieve optimal fragmentation, especially in the stemming zone2. The ‘shock absorber effect’ if the air deck reduces ground vibration and air blast3. Additionally, the practice of loading explosive product directly in saturated ground without dewatering or lining prior is an increasing global trend.

In a Bureau of Mines supply evaluation, the known uranium resources in the United States are estimated to have a total recoverable uranium oxide (U3O8) content of 3,132,400 tons at prices up to $69.32 per pound. Only those resources were evaluated for which sufficient quantity data are available and process technology exists for recovering uranium. A total of 160,800 tons of U3O8 is available at $8 per pound from ore deposits presently mined and an additional 244,700 tons available at prices up to $30 per pound from similar but usually lower grade deposits. A total of 2,726,900 tons of U3O8 is available from four other resources: copper leach solutions, wet-process phosphoric acid, Florida phosphate rock Leached zone, and Chattanooga Shale. These resources contain from 30,000 tons of recoverable U30, at a price of $7.52 per pound as a byproduct of copper leach solutions to 2,557,300 tons at a price of $69.32 per pound from Chattanooga Shale.

The critical importance of wire rope integrity to the mining industry has led to the creation of standards for the retirement of wire rope as well as to the development of electromagnetic devices and procedures that would allow wire ropes to be tested against these standards without destroying them, The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted research to evaluate these devices by measuring loss of metallic cross-sectional area and the number of wire breaks, or local faults. The intent was to define the extent to which the technique can identify degradation within the rope, e.g., broken wires, corrosion, and wear. Experimental results showed that instrument sensitivity depended on a number of factors, including rope diameter, placement of sensors, location and characteristics of flaws, rope speed, and tension on the rope. The experiments also demonstrated the importance of having an elongated recorder trace and a properly trained and experienced operator to interpret overall results. A design of a rope and test procedures for use in laboratory evaluation of instruments have been recommended by the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee E07.07.10, Wire Rope Applications. The USBM is working through this committee to develop standards for an electro-magnetic method of wire rope inspection.

"Recent trends in Canadian mineral processing were reported in seven areas of interest covered by seventeen technical papers at the 1976 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, held at Energy, Mines and Resources' Camsell Hall, Ottawa. New milling equipment included the Enviro-Clear thickener, large-volume Outokumpu flotation machines and abrasion-resistant polyurethane screens. Grinding experiences from a variety of milling operations were reported. Opportunities for increased sizing and grinding efficiency were presented. Flotation control by digital computer and by chemical additions were described in two mill operations. Slurry pumping and sampling techniques were described for various operations. Environmental control in milling was reported concerning dust suppression, arsenic removal and tailings disposal. Several aspects of gold milling were described by the most recently commissioned gold mine and by CANMET. Potash operations were reported showing the similarity of processing and process control to that of metallic minerals."

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM), in particular, has been likened in a somewhat inflammatory manner to be the ‘next asbestos’.From the business change perspective, there are three areas holding the industry back from fully engaging with the issue:There is no real feedback loop in any operational sense to assess the impact of investment or application of controls to manage diesel emissions.DPM are getting ever smaller and more numerous, but there is no practical way of measuring them to regulate them in the field. Mass, the current basis of regulation, is becoming less and less relevant.Diesel emissions management is generally wholly viewed as a cost, yet there are significant areas of benefit available from good management.This paper discusses a feedback approach to address these three areas to move the industry forward. The six main areas of benefit from providing a feedback loop by continuously monitoring diesel emissions have been identified: Condition-based maintenance. Emissions change instantaneously if engine condition changes. Operator performance. An operator can use a lot more fuel for little incremental work output through poor technique or discipline. Vehicle utilisation. Operating hours achieved and ratios of idling to under power affect the proportion of emissions produced with no economic value. Fuel efficiency. This allows visibility into other contributing configuration and environmental factors for the vehicle. Emission rates. This allows scope to directly address the required ratio of ventilation to diesel emissions. Total carbon emissions. The analysis of in-mine grounding systems began with an extensive literature search which is still in progress. About a dozen articles have been found which deal directly with grounding problems on low voltage power systems or mine power systems. These systems have special grounding problems because normal load currents can be nearly as large as many types of fault currents. Information has been collected on the influence of cable spacing) conduit geometry, location of nearby conducting structures, etc., on the magnitude and path of fault current. Many other articles have been found which are less directly related to mine ground system analysis. The in-mine ground system analysis team has also inspected portions of two mine power systems to become familiar with the practices used in grounding. One electrical engineer and several other mine personnel have been interviewed concerning mine power system grounding practice. Already several aspects of the mine grounding system have been marked as requiring special attention.
