"The potential use of Black Dross (BD) as a raw material for the production of refractories, fluxing agents and glasses is the main motivation of the present study. Heat treatment experiments were carried out in Ar, and under reduced pressure (20 Pa), to evaluate the salt removal efficiency. The chemical composition of the BD after heat treatment was investigated by SEM-EDS and XRD analyses. Based on the present results, it is established that the salt starts to evaporate at ˜1273 K in Ar, and under reduced pressure. The salt removal efficiency in a 20 g sample was found to increase in both cases as a function of time and temperature. Moreover, in Ar the chlorine concentration was lowered to 0.3 wt% after heat treatment at 1523 K for 10 hours. Under reduced pressure, however, 0.2 wt% residual chlorine was obtained after 8 hours at 1473 K.IntroductionIt is believed that aluminum recycling in the near future will become the main route of aluminum production [1]. Black dross (BD) that is produced during this process contains, among other things, high amount of salts like NaCl and KCl [2, 3]. Almost 800,000 tons of BD is annually land filled in United States and this number continues to grow with the increase in aluminum recycling [2]. The BD should be dumped in controlled land field and it is costly procedure [4, 5].The water-soluble compounds in BD react with water or environmental humidity and release chlorides into the water and/or generate toxic gases such as H2, CH4, NH3 and H2 S [6-8]. In the Europe, BD is considered as toxic waste and its disposal as landfill is forbidden [8, 9]. After salt removal, the BD is considered to be non-hazardous and can be buried under ground [10].On the other hand, BD do also contains many relatively valuable compounds that may be changed in to useful materials as a result of further treatment [11, 12]"

This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. The importance of United States coal exports as a component of the national economy, the potential for growth of these exports, and the inter-national character of this sector of the coal industry are described in this report. The report summarizes some of the many background elements in the rise of United States coals to preeminence in highly competitive world markets. It presents some insight into this important sector of United States industry and the positive contribution of this sector to the Nation's balance of payments. It contains pertinent basic statistics on production, trade, and consumption of coal in most major markets for 1960-66. The report examines the movement of United States coals from mines to export markets, tracing and describing origins, exit ports, prices, and trends as well as inland and ocean freight rates and other data vital to an under-standing of some of the practices and complexities of the United States coal markets abroad. A brief sketch of coal production and consumption in principal importing countries is also presented with a short review of some of the more current practices and problems of these countries. Coal produced in inland areas of the. United States can be moved to and distributed economically within coal-producing countries overseas and in Canada. Quality coals from the United States can successfully compete with foreign coals in nearly any area of the world on a truly economic basis because of their high grade and their low cost which derives from the high productivity of the miner and from reasonable ocean freight rates. Because of tariffs, trade embargoes, quotas, and other restrictions, how-I ever, foreign coal markets are relatively limited. Further limitations are imposed in some countries by economic conditions which restrict all imports as a matter of financial and economic necessity. Despite these obstacles, United States coals have brought lower cost quality coals to a large segment of the foreign energy market.

The process for which it is to be used is too often the only consideration in the design of a vessel. A de-sign allowing for practical manufacture and erection, as well as for proper maintenance, can often give over-all economies. Most platework in-stalled today is of welded construction. Therefore, metallurgical control is important in its manufacture. Also, because many concentrating and re-fining processes tend to be corrosive, the subject of protective coatings as a part of the manufacturing process is extremely important. The plant de-signer should know how to evaluate and specify controls for the metallurgy and for the coatings. Mining operations are becoming more sophisticated in the field of mechanical engineering. More and more emphasis is being given to preventive maintenance. The first step in any maintenance program, however, is good inspection service. This paper will suggest methods for the inspection of platework, and outline methods for repair and replacement.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a study of mine fires in the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania to determine the most effective approaches to fire control in this area. The problems involved in controlling an anthracite fire include the geological and mining conditions in this area, the propagation characteristics of anthracite, the fire control methods available, the hazards associated with these fires, and the mar-ginal effectiveness of past fire control projects. From this genecal background, fire control options were discussed as they apply in ISBO to the Centralia mine fire. Probable effectiveness, feasibility, and costs were assessedv The options evaluated include four excavation plans, flooding, hydraulic flushing, water curtain isolation, mining to construct an underground carrier, burnout control, and relocation of the community. The most advantageous from a technical viewpoint is an excavation method combining complete excavation of the fire zone within the borough with trenching to confine the remaining fire. It appears that for many anthracite fires, as for the Centralia mine fire, there are no available control measures that have a moderate cost, are proven effective, and produce minimal disruption on the surface.

There is currently limited knowledge concerning South African coal deposits as hosts for rare earth elements (REE). This project aims to determine the concentration of REE, including yttrium and scandium (REY+Sc) in various coal seams and adjacent sediments in borehole cores from the Ermelo, Witbank, and Waterberg coalfields in South Africa. Coal petrography (maceral count and vitrinite reflectance), XRD, XRF, sequential chemical extraction procedure (SCEP) before ICPMS, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) were conducted on the coal and associated sediment samples. The coals were inertinite-rich, medium-rank bituminous coal, with moderate to high ash content. The two dominant minerals in all the coalfields are kaolinite and quartz, except for sample ZBS2M, where dolomite was dominant. The dominant major oxides are Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and CaO, which concur with the XRD results. The ICP-MS results following SCEP indicated that both coal and the associated sediments were light REY+Sc dominant. There was also an elevation of medium REY+Sc in the Witbank coal’s associated sediment samples. Notably, the samples with the highest REY+Sc results were the sediment samples. The Waterberg samples had the lowest REY+Sc from both the coal (less than 2 μg/g to 7 μg/g) and associated sediments (2 μg/g to 15 μg/g). While the highest REY+Sc was yielded from the Witbank-associated sediments (500 μg/g to 2,500 μg/g). The carbonate fraction step proved to be the most successful leaching step, as most REY+Sc was recovered in that step for all coalfields. In addition to the carbonate fraction, the silicates and sulfide fraction in the Witbank samples, and the ion-exchangeable fraction for the Waterbergassociated sediments samples proved successful in leaching out the REY+Sc. MLA determined that monazite and xenotime in all the coal samples were the REY+Sc-bearing minerals.

This paper describing the mining practice and methods at the United Verde Extension mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series of papers in preparation by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods used in various mining districts of the United States. The United Verde Extension mine is a massive, high-grade deposit of copper sulphide containing some gold and silver and is mined almost exclusively by the conventional square-set method with some local modifications. About 450 men are employed underground and 1200 tons of direct smelting ore is produced per day. Figure 1 is a surface map of the Jerome district.

Away back in the eighties of the last century, when Sir Charles, then Doctor, Tupper, was not only a prominent but a dominant figure in the political life of Nova Scotia, his opponents brought the railing accusation against him that he was the foremost of egotists because of his frequent use of the personal pronoun. I heard Tupper speak and had no sympathy with the railers, because I could not well see how the pronoun could be dispensed with without laying himself open to a charge of affectation. I shall make reference in what follows to incidents in which I have taken part, and shall be at no pains to dispense with the pronoun, even though thereby I lay my-self open to the charge of being a pupil of the deceased states-man. So vigorously was the work prosecuted that in 18 7 4 two slopes, the east and the west, were in active operation, with a considerable. output, the east slope on occasional days producing 800 tons. The President of the Company, the late Senator McFarlane, was a Nova Scotian, the other directors were mainly merchants from St. John, N.B. From the first the enterprise was an .astonishing success, due in the greatest part to its geographical position, and in large part to the untiring vigilance of the directors, a majority of whom visited the collieries at short intervals, thereby keeping the manager, much of the time, on tenter hooks.

Dynamic pressures during blasting can affect performances of both electronic and non-electronic detonators. Boreholes can develop tremendous amount of pressures during blasting. The effect of such elevated pressure especially during electronic delay countdown is probably more acute in electronic detonators. Measuring the pressures during blasting can aid to understand the relationship between magnitude of the pressure developed and the multitude of blasting conditions.

"6.1. Mineralogical Techniques ApplicableTo the Platinum-Group Elements6.1.1. IntroductionThe named platinum-group minerals (PGM) usually occur as grains smaller than about 200 microns and, even when present as larger grains as in nuggets, these are often complex multimineral intergrowths. Therefore, the PGM must be examined by microscopic techniques and, because all named PGM are opaque, they are suitable for microscopic study by reflected light. Special techniques for concentrating PGM and preparing suitable polished sections are detailed in Chapter 5. Another characteristic of the PGM is that the majority have very high reflectance at 589 nm, i.e., over 450Jo, but they range from about 38 to 74%. In contrast, micro-indentation hardness has a wider range from - 60 to - 3,000 kg I mm, and the PGM range from brittle to malleable.The small grain-size of PGM imposes certain limitations, or complications, on the usual mineralogical determinative methods of reflectance, micro-indentation hardness and X-ray diffraction. In addition, certain combinations of elements in some PGM render electron-probe analyses difficult. The usefulness and shortcoming of these methods, as applied specifically to the PGM, are discussed in the following sections. These are not, however, meant to be exhaustive descriptions of the techniques, which are fully described in other texts.6.1.2. Micro-Indentation HardnessDetermination of the Vickers Hardness Number (VHN) is discussed in detail in recent publications, such as Bowie and Simpson (1977) and Craig and Vaughan (1981). In addition, the recommendations of the Commission on Ore Microscopy (COM) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) are given by Criddle (1980). The usual small grain-size of the PGM, however, precludes the widespread use of this technique and very few PGM have, in fact, had their VHN determined at the COM-recommended standard load of 100 gf (cf. Cabri, 1981b, in Chapter 7). Examination of VHN data reported in the literature reveals that the few PGM whose microindentation hardness has been measured have incomplete VHN data, measured with loads other than 100 gf (Chapter 7). The small grain-size may also result in unreliable VHN data because, even though the correct load may have been applied, a thin grain will give erroneous data due to the matrix, or the grain may even shatter or pop out of the section. On the other hand, micro-indentations may give useful qualitative diagnostic clues. Moncheite, for example, shows fractures near the indentation (Chapter 7, Plate 1). In other cases, intergrown PGM produce different-sized indentations: e.g., froodite-michenerite-gold in Cabri (1972); isoferroplatinumtulameenite in Cabri et al. (1973); michenerite-moncheite in Cabri and Laflamme (1976) and Chapter 7, Plate 1; altaitemichenerite- testibiopalladite in Hudson eta/. (1978) and Plate 1, Chapter 7."

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the relationship of bituminous coal seam parameters and the amount of airborne respirable dust generated at longwalls. Dust and coal samples were obtained from 20 longwalls operating in geographically representative coalfields throughout the United States. Statistical analyses of coal seam parameters and airborne respirable dust measurements indicate a likely causal relationship between seam type and respirable dust. Low-ash, high-volatile coal seams were associated with higher airborne respirable dust levels. A negative linear correlation (significant at the 95-pct confidence level) was observed between the seam's ash content and airborne respirable dust, explaining up to 18 pct (R2 = 0.18) of headgate dust level variation and up to 15 pct of tailgate dust level variation. Volatile matter was found to have a positive linear correlation with tailgate dust level, explaining 16 pct of the variation. Further data examination indicates that these relationships with dust are most likely nonlinear, because of improved R2 values over the linear correlations. However, a notable portion of longwall dust production is influenced by other operational parameters, so additional research under more controlled conditions is needed to determine the seam's causative functions.

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."

THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with low ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the size range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for vari¬ous reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. These properties of fluidized dusts have been used most successfully.

"Before energy can be saved in the materials industry, the process must be understood. At the same time, baby boomers are starting to retire. New people are entering the field without experience and training especially in methods to save energy. Various classroom courses, seminars, books, software, and websites are available for the professional to better understand the industry with the ultimate goal to reduce energy use. This paper is a review of what is currently available with some comments on potential needs.IntroductionEnergy use is high within the materials industry. For the United States, the primary metal industry uses 8% of all energy used in manufacturing (Figure 1 )1 or 1, 736 trillion BTUs per year. Sadly, while energy use is high, energy management is not universal within the industry. Counting both internal programs and external such as the utility supplier, equipment manufacturers, federal and state programs, only 66% of primary metals companies participate in an energy management activity1.For the materials field, process heating is the majority of the energy use in a plant2. Understanding and optimizing process heating is a critical need for materials energy professionals. Surprisingly, process heating is not necessarily the work addressed within an energy program. The U.S. 2006 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (see Table 1) found more primary metal companies addressing lighting with 31 % participation versus 15% with process heating work even though energy used in lighting tends to be a minor (in the range ofl-3% ofa typical plant's energy use)."

This paper presents the basic CIS regulatory environmental requirements for permitting of a hypothetical mining source and emphasizes air permitting. Topics which will be covered include: the Expertiza process, air pollution quantification, data requirements, and air pollution modeling protocol. A comparison will be made between permitting requirements for air pollution sources in the United States and a CIS country, Kazakstan.

The following account of oil-shale operations in Australia is based upon infor- mation obtained by the authors while visiting Australia from September 15 to October 7, 1947, supplemented by published data, and augmented by analyses of samples of oil shale and its products at the Oil-shale Research and Development Laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo. The primary objective of the authors' trip to Australia was to obtain, first hand, information regarding the equipment and methods used by National Oil Proprie- tary, Ltd., at Glen Davis, New South Wales, in mining oil shale, extracting oil from it, and refining the shale oil. This company was operating the only oil-shale plant that had been active in Australia since 1945. The plant comprised an oil-shale mine, 104 modified Pumpherston (Fell) retorts in 2 batteries, a hele refinery, and a 3-inch gusoline pipeline to the railroad loniing terminal t Sun Junction, 30 miles away. "INTRODUCTION Underground mines have the risk of accumulation of gases if not ventilated properly or during and after emergency situations when ventilation controls become damaged or stop working. Common gases that are monitored in underground coal are carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2), and methane (CH4). Methane is a gas found in coal and released through mining; its explosive range is between 5% and 15%. Methane is commonly monitored on all mining equipment and with handheld gas sensors carried by most underground coal miners. Fiber optics (FO) is a popular technology applied in underground mining, particularly for its electric isolation. Many miners are familiar with FO cables hung throughout the mine, which are primarily used in the communication of voice and data (Taylor et al. 2010). Advancements in laser and fiber optics have made this technology well suited for gas sensing the harsh environment of mining applications. The work of the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the use of fiber optic monitoring of gases in mines started in 1992. Dubaniewicz et al. (1992, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2003) developed prototype gas sensors, including methane gas sensors, for research purposes. Previous research (Dubaniewicz & Chilton 1992) identified potential fiber optic gas detection cross-sensitivities associated with the index of refraction of various gases. Index of refraction effects was noted for carbon dioxide (CO2), which is produced in significant quantities by mine fires or explosions. NIOSH released a broad agency announcement (BAA) for the development and demonstration of mine safety and health technology (CDC NIOSH 2017). The objective of this announcement was to validate a sensor, specifically fiber optic, for the mine environment and test it in an actual working mine. The RSL FO sensor “OptoSniff” provided from this work is capable of hundreds of sensing points over distances of up to 20 km, has a measurement range of 0.05% to 100%, senses in an oxygen- deficient environment, and has no gas cross-sensitivity (RSL, 2014). The RSL system is totally electrically passive outside the central control unit (CCU), which can be housed in an MSHA-approved explosion-proof (XP) enclosure or in a control room outside of the permissive area. The sensor was tested in dusty and signal loss situations, showing it is tolerant of dust, has functioned at signal losses up to 90%, and was successfully tested in a mine environment for a five-month period (Walsh et al. 2014). This paper describes how the RSL FO sensor is used for testing using smoke and its contaminants for applicability in emergency situations. The testing investigates individual contaminants such as CO2, temperature, and smoke. Each test was performed separately and methane concentration, laser power, and response time data were collected."

A physical model based on similarity principles was constructed for simulating the RH degasser of CST (Companhia Siderurgica Tubarao, Vitoria, ES, Brazil) to evaluate the circulation rate of the metal which essentially defines the degree of exposure of the metal to vacuum in the chamber and thus of the refining rate. The circulation rate on the other hand will influence the decarburization rate and removal of dissolved gases like nitrogen and hence it is essential to optimise this parameter to get maximum refining efficiency with minimum refming times, thus improving the productivity of the secondary refining process. Mixing characteristics in the ladle is evaluated by pulse tracer addition using conductivity-meters located at the down leg as well as at several locations in the ladle. The influence of gas injection through nozzles in the upleg with simultaneous bottom injection of gas as well as nozzle blockage on the circulation rates were investigated. Also simulation experiments of kinetics of decarburization were carried out using C02 adsorption-desorption process in sodium hydroxide solution as circulating fluid and the effect of, bottom gas flow rate in this case was also evaluated. The results were carried over to prototype and to optimize the process.
