This report presents results of an investigation undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the clay content of typical petroleum reservoir sands in Wyoming and the effect of clay content on the permeability behavior of the sands. These results should have significance in determining the feasibility of injecting water into the sands for secondary recovery and in estimating the probable damage incurred by these sands if invaded with filtrates from water-base drilling muds. The results of air-, brine-, and water-permeability determinations are given for reservoir sands in three Wyoming fields. The amounts of materials of "fine silt and clay size" (Wentworth scale) in the sands and the types of clay minerals present, as identified by X-ray diffraction methods, are also presented and discussed.

Transportation of iron ore from the mine to the plant is critical to business success. Ore from the mine may have to be transported across states, countries and even continents to get to the processing plant or export facilities, and ultimately to the client. Numerous transportation steps may result in potential logistical difficulties. Companies are continually seeking ways to increase production rates, decrease delivery times and reduce operating costs. Transportation cost is a major component of the total cost of mining iron ore and therefore requires effective use of transport systems.Bottlenecks in iron ore transport systems, due to material handling issues, can result in loss in profit in the order of millions of dollars per hour. Bottlenecks can be seen anywhere in the transport system where the desired flow rate cannot be achieved. These bottlenecks occur for various reasons such as increasing throughput in a transport system originally designed for a lower throughput resulting in plugged transfer chutes, changing material characteristics (eg finer material, increased moisture content), changing to a new type of material or blend that again alters handleability, or changes in operational philosophy due to equipment availability or process utilisation.Stockpiles may have limited live capacity such that an adequate amount of ore may not be readily reclaimed when required (eg to fill a complete train’s railcars). In bins and hoppers, material may discharge through a central flow channel resulting in the formation of a stable rathole, which can then collapse causing material to flood the downstream system and cause significant downtime for clean-up (eg railcars beneath train load outs). In transfer chutes, bottlenecks can be caused by pluggages or downtime required for the change-out of liners due to excessive wear. In ship loading, long settling or de-aeration time, or material exceeding its transportable moisture limit (TML) may result in further bottlenecks. These bottlenecks all have associated costs because of the need to address their causes and because of the lost opportunities for throughput.This paper will discuss how bulk material technology and proper understanding of material flow characteristics can be applied to mitigate bottlenecks. It will discuss how to predict potential bottleneck locations through a scientific method of analysis and evaluation to determine if an increase in throughput of an existing transport system is possible, as well as whether or not a new material will flow reliably through an existing system.CITATION:Hartford, C E, Holmes, C P and Tan, T, 2015. By 1980, the free world's need for economic sources of energy is expected to double. As a result, there will be a tremendous potential for all energy sources working together to supply the demand. For coal to continue its dominant role as a low-cost energy source, means must be found for it to meet the challenge of nuclear power and to overcome obstacles placed on its use by air and water pollution regulations. As the more limited reserves of gas and oil diminish, economic ways are also required for converting coal to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels, and to chemicals, thus resulting in optimum utility of the most abundant low-cost fuel resource. The means for accomplishing these ends can only come about by a vigorous research and development program. Successful efforts by industry and government working together, both in America and abroad, will assure the continued use of coal to meet the world's energy demands. This paper discusses the emerging patterns of energy sources throughout the world and the role that research and development on coal will play in supplying future energy requirements.

"In recognition of his inspiring dedication to the mining industry through education, research contributions and dissemination of practical knowledge, exceptional leadership and excellence in mining engineering practice and for his lecture, “You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.” Recipient of the 2002 D.C. Jackling Award Introduction It is always difficult to decide on the most appropriate title to give to a paper or talk. It is a particularly difficult decision in the case of the Jackling Lecture, because the title becomes part of the award citation. I hope that the significance of this unusual title will become crystal clear as you read the pages that follow. However, to assist you in this journey, I will provide the following few words of guidance. In making a cake, you need the proper ingredients. If one or more of them are missing, it will not be a cake. In addition, the quality of the cake depends on the quality of the ingredients. In my lecture, the "cake" is the U.S. mining industry of the future. A national perspective President George W. Bush in his State of the Union Address (Bush, 2002) delivered on January 29, 2002, defined three national objectives: •win the war on terrorism, •protect the homeland and •revitalize the economy. Under the heading "revitalize the economy," he indicated the importance of "good jobs" and "energy production" by saying: "Good jobs begin with good schools. Good jobs also depend on reliable and affordable energy. This Congress must act to encourage conservation, promote technology, build infrastructure and it must act to increase energy production at home so America is less dependent on foreign oil." I wish that he would have broadened his focus and stated instead that: "This Congress must act to encourage conservation, promote technology, build infrastructure, and it must act to increase materials production at home so America is less dependent on foreign sources." With regard to jobs, all jobs are not equal. To paraphrase John Reeves of MidContinent Resources (Reeves, 2002): "If our nation is to prosper, we all cannot make a living by doing each other's wash. Some of us, at least, must be actively engaged in the primary production of raw materials from the riches of the earth and other Americans must turn those materials into consumer products." The unfortunate trend in our country has been to neglect the primary production of basic materials, even those coming next in line. We have left those responsibilities to others while we concentrate instead on performing various services, i.e., doing each other's wash and flipping burgers. This cannot continue. It must be remembered, especially by those in leadership positions, that all "jobs" are not created equal. Some jobs are much more essential to the security and wellbeing of our country than others. We must be sure that the important ones are in place. We cannot produce the basic materials that our nation requires without access to those materials. This leads to my Proposition 1: You cannot have a viable mining industry without a clearly enunciated, positive U.S. materials policy. Background regarding U.S. materials policy Resources for freedom. In January 1951, President Truman created the President's Materials Policy Commission, with William S. Paley as chairman. As expressed in the invitation letter from the president to Paley: This commission, within the executive office of the president, is to study the broader and longer-range aspects of the nation's materials problems as distinct from the immediate defense needs. The task of the commission is to make an objective inquiry into all major aspects of the problem of assuring an adequate supply of production materials for our long-range needs and to make recommendations that will assist me in formulating a comprehensive policy on such materials. The commission should study, together with any other aspects deemed by it to be pertinent, such questions relating to production materials as: - the long-range requirements outlook; - the long-range supply outlook; - the prospect and estimated extent of shortages; - the consistency and adequacy of existing government policies, plans and programs; and - the consistency and adequacy of private industry practices.

This paper shows the application of the porous plug system in the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process. This system has already been adopted and utilized in the steel industry to enhance productivity. Recently, some copper smelters have adopted this system but the results have not been satisfactory. The porous plug system was installed at the anode furnace in December 2001 to reduce the oxidation time and decrease the oil consumption. A good effect was that the nitrogen stirring of the melt through porous plugs improved the melt heat transfer. As the result of the enhancing heat transfer the oil consumption and the build-up inside the furnace were actually decreased. But until now the oxidation time has not been sufficiently reduced. In the future, further research and tests are needed in order to increase the productivity and save costs.

This United States Bureau of Mines study is based on a review of U.S. mine fire accidents that occurred from 1970 through 1989. Information on these accidents was obtained through investigative reports written by Mine Safety and Health Administration personnel. For this study, 260 mine fire accident reports were examined. A previous Bureau research effort established that fires causing fatalities were more likely to occur in haulage entries than at any other underground location. This study has found that the most prolific source of haulage entry fires was the inadvertent grounding of trolley wires. The largest segment (15 out of 40 trolley wire fires) resulted from not maintaining adequate clearance between the trolley wire and the vehicle. Several novel fire prevention and control ideas have evolved in response to frequently occurring fire-related problems. These included; discriminating power isolation devices, wire cutting devices, more accessible fire extinguishers, vehicle overcurrent protection, and vehicle fire suppression.

In 2006 Arch Materials initiated the development of an underground limestone mining complex. The decision to proceed with the project was the end result of several years of market research and geological reconnaissance. The scope of the project included the construction of two declines to the mining horizons located approximately 900 feet below the surface, the means and methods of this phase will be the primary focus of this discussion. The design, fabrication and erection of a state of the art crushing and screening processing plant which when completed will have the primary crushing located on the mine level allowing uniformly sized material to be brought to the surface by means of a highly efficient conveyor system and a surface portion of the plant where material would be additionally processed, screened and stockpiled into specific product types. Also included in the scope of the project is the construction of offices, warehouse and shop facilities necessary to support the operations, commercial sales and distribution of the finished products.

Ion exchange is widely used in hydrometallurgical operations for the recovery and purification of valuable metals. Special chelating resins have a high affinity for specific elements, allowing the selective removal of low levels of impurities from a background of highly concentrated valuable metal. Solvent-impregnated resins have been added to this group more recently, expanding the treatment options. These products find application in the purification of cobalt-rich liquor prior to the production of high-purity metal or metal salts. Impurities in copper-cobalt circuits that are typically targeted by ion exchange include iron, uranium, copper, zinc, nickel, bismuth, and antimony. Ion-exchange resins can also be used to treat tailings, thereby recovering additional valuable metal and improving the Environmental and Social Governance credentials of the operation. In June of 2013, Odyssey Marine Exploration conducted sea trials of the newly installed SeaBat 7150 full-ocean multibeam sonar system on the M/V Dorado Discovery over the Fierberling Guyot in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Fieberling Guyot is located approximately 990 kilometers west of San Diego, California and it rises abruptly from the deep ocean floor (~4300 meters) to a minimum depth of approximately 438 meters. The SeaBat 7150 operates at two distinct frequencies, 24 kHz (shallow to 3000 meters) and 12 kHz (full-ocean depth greater than 2000 meters). Onboard operational data are managed by a suite of state-of-the-art software. A SQL Server 2012 database provides the highly specific management and visualization tools as ArcGIS 10, Micromine 2013, and Geobank 2013 database. The 7150 is mounted on a gondola one meter lower than on previous system and greatly reduces bubble interference. The 7150 generates 880 beams

During the last years, Chile has been the largest copper producer, either as concentrates or cathodes. Copper obtained via pyrometallurgy is produced by seven smelters, which have carried out modernization plans to increase smelting capacity or to achieve environmental regulations established in the Chilean legislation. Thus, the present work updates technological innovations in smelters, environmental regulations and presents solutions for S02 handling, particulate matter and arsenic. Also, the authors emphasize the important role of CODELCO Chile, the most important state-owned copper company, in developing technologies such as El Teniente Converter and El Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace.

Mining companies have sharpened their refocus on their tailings management strategies in recent years. Mining companies with tailings storage facilities that use the upstream construction method have been challenged to track the evolution of industry standards, assess risks, revise design, and communicate design revisions with regulators. While many aspects of best practices and industry standards have evolved in recent years as an attribute of continual improvement, the controlling standard in the design of many upstream dams is understanding the foundational strengths of hydraulically deposited tailings. Following best practices and industry standards, Hibbing Taconite Company managed by Cleveland-Cliffs, began the re-evaluation of foundation strengths underlying a system of upstream dams at the company’s iron ore mine tailings storage facility in northern Minnesota. Initial steps in the re-evaluation require reanalysis of design parameters and recommendations by the Engineer of Record to the Owner, which was followed by a series of meetings with the Technical Review Board to determine an initial path forward. Once a path forward and preliminary design parameters were determined, the Owner engaged with the State Dam Safety Engineer to discuss and seek approval of the plan. With continuous regulatory engagement throughout the process, further refinement of the design parameters for the hydraulically-placed tailings foundations underlying upstream dams began with field and lab geotechnical investigations. Following a review of risk assessments and trigger actions response plans, Hibbing Taconite revised its tailings storage facility operating plans and budget for the coming years. Based on the findings of the re-evaluation, reanalysis, and refinement of parameters, a paradigm shift was realized with the hydraulically placed tailings foundation strengths underlying the upstream system of dams. This paper explores the path that the Hibbing Taconite Company followed to understand the paradigm shift and construct downstream improvements. The plan involved tailings re-characterization, dam design revisions, operating plan reconciliation, budget revisions, wetland permitting, dam safety permit amendments, storm water prevention plans, borrow materials studies, new concrete decant structures and the pursuit to recognize and be consistent with industry standards.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

"IntroductionIN 1940, in a series of articles, M. W. von Bernewitz(l) reviewed in detail roasting of gold and silver sulphide ores and concentrates. Since that time some significant developments in roasting have taken place, and a number of papers have appeared in the Canadian technical literature, dealing severally with the roasting of a particular ore or concentrate.The purpose of this paper is not only to review some of these Canadian papers and bring the information on Canadian roasting practices to .date, but also to analyse the mechanism of roasting. Hence, it is proposed to start with a study of physico-cl1emical factors fundamental in roasting, the knowledge of which, by creating a sound basis for a proper roaster design, makes good roasting possible.Physico-Chemical FactorsRoasting can be defined as heating sulphide ores in presence of air below fusion points of the constituent minerals, at such temperatures as to convert metallic sulphides to oxides. Hence, roasting is a chemical process.The object of roasting is, by changing, chemically, mineral constituents of sulphide ores, to make the economic recovery of the desired •Constituent metal by a subsequent standard treatment possible. For instance, pyritic ores, containing gold in sub-microscopic form which no amount of grinding would release, are roasted in order, by oxidizing the sulphides, to open up their structures to such an extent as to enable cyanide solutions to come into contact with the gold and dissolve it. The production of porous calcine is, therefore, the object of roasting of refractory auriferous sulphide ores or concentrates. Such a porous calcine may be defined as a desirable calcine, and the roasts which produce desirable calcines can in their turn be termed desirable roasts."

This report describes sulfatization of nickeliferous laterites from Puerto Rico and the Philippines for recovery of water-soluble nickel and cobalt sulfates. Temperatures ranging from 665 C to 710 C and a 10-percent sulfur dioxide-air reaction gas were employed during batch-roasting tests and during continuous countercurrent treatment in a 2-inch-diameter shaft furnace. A maximum of 69 percent of the nickel and 76 percent of the cobalt were recovered from one sample of Puerto Rican laterite, and a maximum of 96 percent of the nickel and 91 percent of the cobalt were recovered from the Philippine laterite.

The Rio Tinto Metal (RTMetal) copper smelter, located 5 Km from Huelva, Spain, began operations in 1970. Since then a series of expansions and modifications have allowed a progressive increase in copper production. Environmental considerations having become increasingly important, environmental protection has come to represent an important aspect of the investments in production. As a result, modifications have been carried out in the two existing acid plants: -Modification of the RTM I gas cleaning section to closed circuit. -Substitution of cascade filters and acid lines. -Modification of the RTM I plant to double absorption. The Expansion and Environmental Improvement Project, completed end 1995, will allow 270,000 t Cu and 800,000 t H2SO4 to be produced yearly, at the same time achieving a decrease in specific and overall emissions. RTMetal's goal is to be an efficient smelter, with the avowed intention of respecting the environment and adopting the best available technologies.

During the war the National Research Council at Ottawa sent out questionnaires to the managers of nearly all the industrial plants in Canada. Inquiry was made as to the research equipment possessed, the number of research workers employed and the nature of the research problems which still remained unsolved. Practically all the companies reported that they had no special facilities for research, had no re-search workers and did not require the assistance of the National Research Council-because they had no research problems. Perhaps we have here one of the chief reasons why certain of our manufacturers find themselves unable to meet foreign competition. For hundreds of years the Indian tribes of northern Chile worked, in a small way, the copper deposits at Chuquicamata. They had no research problems and made no striking success of their mining operations. Then came an American company with a research problem, which they proceeded to solve. To-day the stock of that company has a market value of about $140,000,000.

"Repeated 3D terrestrial digital photogrammetric surveys were conducted on hard rock mine pillars to characterize damage during secondary mining. Damage was quantified by measuring Depth of Failure, DOF, from spalling material and crack intensity, D21. These damage values were then correlated to visually assessed Pillar Damage Ratings and numerically estimated pillar loads. Measured damage, particularly Depth of Failure, correlated well with Pillar Damage Ratings. Numerical predicted pillar stress vs. damage exhibited the expected trend with shorter pillars being stronger. High resolution photographs and 3D models were also used to characterize damage mechanisms, which were found to be structurally constrained. INTRODUCTIONThe Doe Run companies Southeast Missouri Operations consists of six room and pillar lead mines (Brushy Creek, No. 29, Casteel, Buick, Fletcher and, Sweetwater) (The Doe Run Company, 2014). The mines are hosted in the Carbonates and Shales of the Viburnum trend with mining depths varying from 180 to 300 m. Pillars are commonly cut square with widths varying from 7 to 9 m and heights generally between 5 and 18 m, resulting in extraction ratios between 80 and 85% (Roberts et al., 1999). Figure 1 presents an idealized stratigraphic section through the Viburnum trend and Figure 2 shows a plan view of the five areas spanning the three mines included in this study."

DURING the war, events moved with unprecedented rapidity. Situations, industrial, economic and financial, arose over night that stressed to the uttermost the ingenuity and ability of those who dealt with them. It was essentially a time demanding action rapid and concentrated, and not one for discussion, either academic or polemic. As a result, matters of importance were necessarily transacted without the desirable opportunity being afforded of enabling a general understanding to be gained as to the relative merit or demerit involved, and in some instances, legislation essential to enable the consummation of an important matter was passed without attracting the public attention then deeply engrossed in the larger aspects of the situation. The result was that so long as the public mind was occupied, little or no concern was given to questions that ordinarily would have invited immediate attention; and in some instances, only when as an aftermath of war a particular subject has become a matter of discussion, criticism not altogether fair is made without first obtaining accurate knowledge as to the conditions that prevailed, the purpose sought to be accomplished, or the results obtained by the action taken.

In 1949 the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, established a Classification Working Party, to develop an international system for classifying coal. This project was necessitated by the increased trade in coal among various nations following World War II. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed to cover the characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Different terms for describing similar or identical coals in each nation caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade. Experts from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, East Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia participated in various stages of the classification work. Walter A. Selvig was appointed by the Bureau of Mines as the technical expert to represent the United States because of his experience in developing and standardizing methods of analyzing and classifying American coals. He served on the Classification Working Party until his retirement from the Bureau of Mines early in 1956. Extensive laboratory work was done in connection with the classification studies at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .
