The green field discovery of a two million ounce high-grade refractory gold ore deposit in the Indonesian Province of Sulawesi Utara, led Newmont to utilise its proven technical expertise in dry grinding and whole ore roasting to develop a 2000 tonne per day, 160 000 ounce per year operation in this remote and picturesque location.Located at an elevation of 250 in above sea level and ten kilometres to a deep water natural harbour, the hard rock open pit mine, process plant and infrastructure facilities were built to budget at a capital cost of US$132 million. The plant was commissioned with oxide ore, with the first gold poured in March 1996 and with refractory ore in January 1997. The operation rapidly met its production targets because of extensive forward planning and training programs developed for the local workforce. The presence of steep topography, fertile coastal plains, high rainfall, high seismicity of this location led to the decision to dispose of neutralised tailings in deep water off the coast instead of impounding tailings in a dam. This paper describes the development of the project and the challenges in developing a gold operation in a remote location which lacked infrastructure, the steps taken to ensure a smooth commissioning, and the selection of the workforce to operate a technically sophisticated facility.

This report by the Bureau of Mines is the first of two proposed papers on evaluation of spectrophotometric, spectrographic, polarographic, and other analytical methods for quantitatively determining impurities in high-purity tungsten. Some of the methods described are standard methods that have been successfully applied to determine low-level impurities, several are modifications of known methods, and some procedures are entirely original. The Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in tungsten research because tungsten has an extremely high melting point, in fact the highest of any known metal. The metallurgist must know the content of impurities in tungsten because of the marked effects even micro amounts of impurity elements have on its physical properties. The Bureau procured a number of analyzed samples of above-average purity from research laboratories of companies engaged in production and fabrication of tungsten. These samples were investigated by the analytical procedures of those companies for several metallic impurities. Subsequent analytical laboratory determination of impurities in these samples agreed with the analyses as reported. With this assurance that analytical methods were basically accurate for metallic impurities, procedures for the determination of several of these elements were modified to lower the limits of detection and increase the sensitivity of methods. Carbon and the gases hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen were determined by standard instrumental methods, modified to provide greater sensitivity for reliable determinations when content of these elements was low. After the reliability of the modified procedures was affirmed, they were used as a product evaluation guide in the development of a vapor-plating technique for the production of high-purity tungsten. The following list of elements can be determined by one or more of these methods: AI, B, Be, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S1, Sn, Ti, V, and Zn. In addition, a vacuum-fusion method for the determination of H, N, and 0, and a conductometric method for carbon are described. Lower limits of determination and detection for each element listed are given.

This paper summarizes the analyses of ventilation layouts for mines that experience both spontaneous combustion. The major focus is placed on the longwall coal mine layouts used in several countries. Each of the different layouts is modeled in the form of a ventilation network. The gob of a longwall panel is the most critical location for the occurrence of spontaneous combustion. Airflow leakage paths inside the gob are simulated by using a simplified grid-like network. Computer simulations with this model indicates that the W-system of ventilation is most effective in minimizing air leakage into the gob. Homer, the U-system of ventilation, with pressure balancing behind the face support line, is also found promising for longwall panels. The magnitude of air leakage into the gob is observed to change with the advance or retreat of bee, thus requiring appropriate balancing of pressure to maintain the leakage at a minimum.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a detailed study of water usage in the Wyoming mineral industry along with projections for the future In 1964, the mineral industries of Wyoming used 20 billion gallons of new water, nearly all self-supplied, and reused 72 billion gallons, a total usage of 92 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 2.8 billion gallons. About one-half of the 20 billion gallons of new water was obtained from [srface] sources and the rest from ground water. Reported costs, covering power and maintenance, for the self-supplied new water at mineral industry operations ranged from less than 1 cent to 20 cents per thousand gallons and aver-aged 8 cents. At one mineral-related operation, water was hauled by truck to supplement a well supply. The cost was $2.00 per thousand gallons delivered. However, the supplemental requirement was only 10 gpm. Cost figures for the recirculation of water, covering power and maintenance, averaged 2 cents. In terms of water usage, the value of product for the entire industry was $25 per thousand gallons of new water intake and about $180 per thousand gallons consumed. The study revealed that Wyoming has a water deficiency but that the shortage is less severe than in the arid Southwest. Projection of the water needs of the Wyoming mineral industries indicates that the demand for new water will increase from the 20 billion gallons used in 1964 to 25 billion gallons in 1980, a 25-percent increase. The projected new-water requirement for the year 2000 is 40 billion gallons, a 100-percent increase compared with the 1964 figure.

Five years ago, Phillips Coal Company decided replacing mainframe/workstation programs with a new package of PC software was clearly the best solution for computer reserve modelling. The system chosen was actually three programs distinguished by their power, cost, flexibility and integration, and ease of learning and use. Phase I involves the use of the "StratiFact" program for borehole data management and seam correlation. This phase is probably the most neglected, yet critical aspect of reserve evaluation. Phase II employs the "PC/Cores" package for modelling and volumetrics. Phase m is "PC-Cut" which provides mine planning tools including an automated cut generator.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes approximately 142 billion kWh/a of energy. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the industry’s annual energy consumption could be reduced by 49%. This constitutes nearly $3.7 billion of potential savings on coal production costs at 5.3¢/kWh of energy. Additionally, with climate change regulation on the horizon, any benefits from energy savings in the near future are compounded by associated reductions in CO2 emissions. Research indicates that operating conditions significantly affect energy efficiency. Modeling and simulation have been shown to be a cheap and reliable means of evaluating the effects of process interactions and operating conditions. The goal of this work was to apply stochastic process simulation to model the energy efficiency of a typical truck-and-shovel mining system and use the model to evaluate production strategies to improve energy efficiency. The research team conducted energy audits of truck-and-shovel overburden removal and used the results to develop regression models describing truck and shovel fuel consumption. The team then built a stochastic simulation model of the truck-and-shovel overburden removal operation and used it to assess a variety of improvement measures by simulation experimentation. Valid fuel consumption models for shovel loading and truck haulage have been formulated, based on the energy audit results. Valid stochastic process models of truck-and-shovel operations have been formulated to study energy efficiency. The following strategies, in decreasing order of impact, provide the most energy savings for truck-and-shovel overburden removal at the mine: (1) shorten haul roads, (2) increase shovel capacity and (3) increase shovel utilization through optimal truck matching. Additional data will be required to adequately describe operator effects on energy efficiency.

THE fire which occurred in the fall of 1906, at the works of the Boston & Colorado Smelting Co., Argo, Colo., destroyed entirely the gold- and silver-refinery of the plant; and in view of the development of modern practice in the refining of copper-mattes, etc., the management decided that it would be inadvisable to rebuild that part of the works for the continued use of the process which had been conducted therein for so many years as a metallurgical secret. This decision probably removes altogether from the sphere of practice the " Pearce " method for the separation of gold. At all events, it removes the business reasons which have prevented hitherto the publication of the principles involved. At the suggestion of Dr. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute, my father, Richard Pearce, the former manager of these works, has requested me to prepare a brief description of this process for the benefit of our members. Since I severed my connection with the Boston & Colorado Smelting Co. some time ago, I am indebted for some practical details to the present superintendent, Charles Rees, whose friendly assistance I would gratefully acknowledge. THE Newport mine, located at Ironwood, Gogebic county, Mich., on the Gogebic iron-range, is owned and operated by the Newport Mining Co., for the mining of iron-ore. I. GEOLOGY. The general geology of the Gogebic range has been determined and recorded at different times by well-known geologists,) and their work will be referred to briefly in connection with the local conditions in the mine. The strike of the formation across this property is about 15° north of east. The, general dip is 68° to the north. At the base of the formation on the south lies the granite. Looking north, at right angles to the strike of the formation, we have the foot-wall of quartz-slates and quartzite about 400 ft. wide; the iron-formation about 800 ft. wide, and the hanging-wall of black slates. The iron-formation is composed of banded jasper and quartzite together with iron oxide and concentrations of iron-ore. In character the ore is a soft red hematite, with occasional masses of hard blue "steel ore." The formation is crossed in many places by diorite dikes, which cut through at various angles, the larger or main dikes dipping into the foot-wall in a SE. direction at angles varying from 15° to 30°, while numerous small dikes occur which strike through the formation in a vertical plane and at approximately right angles to the main dikes. There are various theories concerning these dikes, especially as to the time of their origin with relation to the ore-deposition. The commonly-accepted theory is that the dikes were there first, but there are some who contend that they were formed

LIME is the alkali that is almost universally added to the solutions in the cyanide process of gold- and silver-extraction for maintaining the so-called, protective" alkalinity. It is produced by the burning of limestone. The value of lime for this purpose depends upon the percentage of calcium oxide contained, which is determined by three factors : 1, purity of the limestone used; 2, degree of the burning-temperature and the period of burning; and 3, length of time of storage of burned material and the condition stored, and whether it has been damp or wet during the storage. These three factors render uncertain the quality of lime bought in the open market. In the United States, lime bought from reliable manufacturers, who thoroughly burn a pure limestone and deliver at once to the consumer from the kilns, may be of a fairly-high and uniform composition ; but in Mexico and Central America, where it is purchased from many small producers, who often start with a poor grade of limestone and burn it in small crude kilns with as little fuel as possible, the quality of the product is quite variable. In consideration of the foregoing, it is apparent at once that there is a great need for a rapid technical method for the valuation of the lime to be used in a cyanide-plant. The determination of calcium by the gravimetric method, with the necessity of determining also the proportion of carbon dioxide, silica, and iron, requires too much time, and is usually out of the question for an isolated plant unequipped with a skilled chemist and, the necessary apparatus. The calculating of all the calcium so found to calcium oxide, although sometimes done, is manifestly very inaccurate.

This report describes in detail the work done on the development of the Time Domain Reflectometry Microcomputer (TDRM). Modifications to the FMC-Model 302A Cable Fault Locator is described in Appendix D. The TDRM unit uses an 8080 microcomputer to accurately locate major faults in low capacitance cables to within ± 1 foot when properly calibrated. Major faults in high capacitance cables are usually located within ± 5 feet. The upper limits of fault detection are <1 kilohm shunt fault and >7 ohm series fault. In practice fault detection limits are reduced to <300 ohms shunt fault and >30 ohms series fault because of discontinuities caused by cable repair.

Heat and humidity buildup within refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ

The Bureau of Mines has investigated novel methods of stimulating petroleum production from reservoirs in the Appalachian Region. An important consideration in applying stimulative production methods is the control and removal of solid precipitates from the boreholes of production wells. Where paraffin-base crude oils are produced, as in the Appalachian Region, the accumulation of paraffin may be particularly troublesome. Paraffin deposition is a major production problem that has confronted the petroleum industry for many years. Although considerable effort has been expended by industry and government, a suitable solution has not been found because of the individuality and complex nature of the deposits. Remedial methods used to prevent or remove paraffin fall generally into four classes: (1) Chemical, (2) physical, (3) operative, and (4) combination. Each class has many subclasses that apply to particular problems in different oil- producing areas. Recently, chemical inhibitors and the sonic pump have assisted operators in preventing and removing paraffin deposits. Because these methods are relatively new, their degree of application has not been completely evaluated.

A methodology for building pragmatic physics-based models is here adapted to predict the erosion of ladle linings in the steel industry, in order to support operators when deciding whether the lining can be used safely for another heat. A defective lining may allow 140 t of molten steel to spill, with disastrous consequences for workers and plant. The adopted work flow for the development, challenges faced, and some model results are presented. One key learning outcome is that model development should allow time for maturing the process understanding, as well as for many iterations by ‘questions-responses and actions’ at various stages in the model development. Good interaction between the development team and industry case owner is an important success factor. Combining or extending the model with the use of machine learning and cognition-related methods, such as knowledge graphs and self-adaptive algorithms, is discussed.

This report, based on information made available by four uranium-producing companies, describes the geology, exploration, open-pit development and mining, and shaft sinking in the Gas Hills uranium district of Wyoming. Open-pit stripping features motor-scrapers push-loaded by crawler or rubber-tired tractors. The ground generally can be ripped, and little blasting is necessary. Detailed data are given on grouting for ground stabilization in sinking a small-diameter shaft in the relatively unconsolidated sandstone and siltstone, Cost and performance data are presented as made available by the companies.

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2

"The world&apos;s first zinc pressure leaching plant at Cominco&apos;s Trail operations started production in 1981. Sullivan zinc concentrate is leached at the rate of 190 tpd in a four-compartment autoclave at elevated temperatures and oxygen pressures to produce a zinc sulphate solution and elemental sulphur. Zinc extraction exceeds 98% and sulphide to elemental sulphur conversion exceeds 95%.The sulphur is recovered from the discharged slurry in the underflow of a hydrocyclone, and is upgraded as a flotation concentrate. The concentrate is dewatered, melted and filtered to produce a polished sulphur product of better than 99% purity. An alternative sulphur recovery process employs an unique sulphur separation method that recovers over 90% of the sulphur in the molten state. The remaining sulphur is recovered by flotation following flash discharge of the slurry. The product slurry containing the zinc sulphate solution and the iron-lead residue joins the existing roast-leach zinc plant for purification and zinc electrowinning.IntroductionIn 1981, Cominco Ltd. commissioned the world&apos;s first commercial zinc pressure leaching plant at their Trail operations in British Columbia. As part of a $700 million modernization and expansion program for lead and zinc started in 1977, the company installed the first o f two autoclave trains.Prior to pressure leaching, zinc production was closely tied to acid and fertilizer production. Sulphur dioxide produced from roasting the concentrates had to be converted to sulphuric acid. Thus, any expansion of zinc operations with the roast-leach technology would have required extensive modifications to the acid and fertilizer plants as well as to the roasters. Zinc pressure leaching, on the other hand, offered a one-step dissolution of zinc from the concentrates with high extraction, and production of elemental sulphur. The associated dust and sulphur dioxide generated in the roasting process are both eliminated from the working environment of the pressure leach facility. The flexibility allowed by producing elemental sulphur, and the opportunity to break the sulphuric acid link for about 25 per cent of the targeted 272,000 tonnes per year zinc production was very appealing. The process was successfully demonstrated at a pilot plant in 1977(1-6)."

The "Pidgeon Process" for the extraction of magnesium from dolomite ore utilizing ferrosilicon as the reducing agent has been studied extensively by active metallurgists such Mr L,M, Pidgeon the father of this process, Most of the work sited so far has focused on heating the (FeSi/MgO,CaO) briquette mix under vacuum in stainless steel retorts by external fuel hydrocarbon heating, In this work Electrical Induction Heating was employed as the heating method whereby the briquette mix was placed in a steel crucible around which an Induction Heating copper coil was wound and placed inside in a stainless steel vacuum tank, It was observed that by virtue of the fast Induction Heating method utilized in the silicothermic extraction process higher reduction temperatures were reached in shorter periods of time due to fast heat transport into the ore charge mix, This facilitated shorter metal reduction times as compared to the conventional fuel heating methods.

"The mining industry suffers from a shortage of professional and other workers. Research and analysis has demonstrated a close correlation between high performance in productivity, maintenance and safety. There is also a significant correlation between engagement and performance. It is the hypothesis of the authors that mines can use a strategy of establishing themselves as a high-performance mine to attract and retain high caliber professional people: step 1 is to become best practice in equipment performance (productivity, maintenance and safety) step 2 is to brand the mine as æbest practiceÆ by sharing what has been confidential performance and outcome information with the general industry.Previous research has shown that many professional people are attracted by the prospect of a high achieving site because of the learnings and the support for continually doing better. In addition, a link has been established in previous research between productivity and safety. Operators and drivers are attracted to sites which have fewer dangerous people operating or driving. Good management delivers exceptional performance and a work site which high caliber managers and operational personnel people want to work at. The strategy requires commitment and proper execution but it can work. The strategy needs a specific approach and this paper will discuss this. A case study is provided from a mine which over a nine month period increased dragline performance by 15 per cent and reduced stress on the boom by 30 per cent. This mine paid the employees (professional and operational) $25 000/a less than the major mines but the operators and professional people would not leave; in fact, people were happy to be paid less to work there.CITATION:Lumley, G and Trott, T, 2012. Under the terms of the 1970 amendments to the Clean Air Act, the EPA established national ambient air quality standards for a number of pollutants. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was one of these pollutants. These ambient air quality standards have had perhaps their biggest impact on the power utilities. In an effort to meet the air quality standards set forth by the EPA, utilities using high sulfur fuels have been forced to install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems. The majority of FGD systems in operation today are nonregenerable systems, that is the by-product of the system is disposed of, usually into settling ponds. Limestone slurry is the most common reagent used to remove SO from the flue gases. The calcium carbonate (limestone) slurry interacts with the flue gas, absorbing the SO2 and forming a by-product of calcium sulfate/sulfite which is disposed of.
