Confined explosions are a major risk in underground coal mine operations. Depending on confinement, ignition location and obstacles in the flame path, methane explosions can transition to detonations. As a result, the severity of mine explosions ranges from minor damage to loss of lives and permanent mine closure. Experimental results have shown that the inclusion of obstacles can significantly increase the flame propagation velocity by inducing turbulence. This research focuses on explosion experiments in a 71 cm diameter, 30.5 m long reactor that includes rock piles as obstacles along with developing the corresponding CFD model that captures the observed flame behavior and interaction with the obstacles. The rock rubble increases the flame front propagation velocity by 500% compared to the maximum velocity observed in the empty reactor experiments. The 2D and 3D CFD models predict the experimental flame front propagation velocity, whereas the 3D model shows a more explicit conformity than the 2D model. Although the computational time to complete the simulation is much less for the 2D model than for the 3D model, the 2D model is not sufficient to simulate cases with rock rubble since it cannot capture the propagation of the flame through the small voids between the rocks with the same effective blockage ratio as the 3D model. The validated CFD model can be scaled up to simulate methane explosions in full scale mine and industrial settings.

"SUMMARY Data presented here indicate that freshly fractured silica exhibits surface characteristics and biologic reactivity distinct from aged silica, and on this basis we propose that these surface features may lead to enhanced manifestations of lung Injury. Grinding of silica produces ~10"" Si and SI-O (silicon-based) radicals per gram of dust on the particulate surface which are characterized by an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum centered around g = 2.0015. These silicon-based radicals react with aqueous media to produce OH radicals, which are demonstrable using a DMPO spin trap. The concentration of silicon-based radicals in silica decreases with aging in air and exhibits a half-life of ~30 h, whereas its ability to generate OH radicals in aqueous solution decreases with a half-life of ~20 h. However, on storage in aqueous media, the concentration of silicon-based radicals end the dust's ability to generate OH radicals decrease significantly within a few minutes. Freshly ground silica is also more biologically reactive than aged silica, because freshly crushed silica activates a greater respiratory burst In alveolar macrophages than aged silica, i.e., storage of ground dust in air decreases silica-Induced superoxide anion secretion, hydrogen peroxide release, and NBT reduction by 25%, 68%, and 43%, respectively. Furthermore, compared to aged silica, freshly ground silica exhibits a greater cytotoxic effect on cellular membrane Integrity, i.e., a 1.5-fold increase in LDH release from macrophages, a 36-fold increase in hemolytic activity, and a three-fold increase in the ability to induce lipid peroxidation. Because acute silicosis is frequently associated with occupations in which freshly fractured crystalline silica of respirable size is generated, the present study suggests that fracture-generated silicon-based radicals may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of this disease. Studies sug-gest that several mechanisms may be in-volved in the development of fibrosis. Lung injury may result from silica-induced release of lysosomal enzymes from alveolar macrophages (4, 5). In ad-dition, silica-induced activation of su-peroxide anion and hydrogen peroxide release from alveolar macrophages may result in oxidant-induced damage to lung parenchyma (6). Silica exposure can also result in the release of mediators from alveolar macrophages which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the syn-thesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (7, 8)."

Based on experimental continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams, an artificial neural network has been trained to predict the amount of microsturctural constituents and hardness resulting from and controlled cooling at rates from 150 to 0.015 K/s. Mining companies are not ill-informed on the topic of community health. There have been a number of research studies that have illuminated community health issues associated with mining, especially in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. However, what is missing amongst the literature is the perspective of mine managers and mining executives on this topic. This is important as mine managers and executives face a number of issues related to community health and are under pressure to consider the topic in more detail. This paper presents results from an exploratory qualitative investigation based on grounded theory research techniques into current community health considerations from the perspectives of mine executives and mine managers working in Western Canada. Interviews were conducted between February and May 2012 with 11 mining versus ten mining executives and managers who represented operating mines or mining umbrella organisations in Western Canada. Participants report on general community health issues that are perceived to be important, the perceived role that the mining sector should play?in contributing to community health and how this differs in Western Canada as compared to locations abroad, and?risks companyÆs face in making community health contributions. This paper concludes by drawing attention to pressing health needs that are present in Northern, rural and Aboriginal populations in Western Canada and provides a platform for future research initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of communities associated with the mining industry. Flotation of low grade Ni ores with serpentinite host rock tend to yield low recoveries of Ni With high MgO contents in the concentrate. The recovery can be enhanced by optimizing the sub-processes in the pulp and in the froth. The new OF-100 flotation cell has been designed to be adaptable to different feed fineness (Coarse, Fine). The losses can according the research conducted at Outokumpu's Hitura plant be substantially decreased by OF-100's new rotor and stator design and froth zone geometry. The froth residence time is used to adapt for feed particle size changes measured by the Outokumpu PSI- 200. Models for the behaviour of different particle Sizes in the sub-processes have been developed. The modified froth zone geometry and the capability of maintaining a froth of desired thickness allows efficient washing of the obtained concentrate producing low levels of MgO.

"When a metal-mining company takes out a workmen's compensation insurance policy, it does so to relieve itself of its uncertain and variable financial liability under laps requiring payment to employees for lost-time accidents, there-by passing the liability or to the insuring agency. For this service, or rather for the assumption of the risk, the insuring agency charges the mining company a price, or in insurance parlance, ""a premium"".The insuring agency depends upon a volume and variety of business to average the losses incurred by its individual policy holders, and determines its price to cover losses that are suffered and its cost of doing business.It is generally known that all types of insurance are founded on the theory of probability applied to large groups of risks, Workmen's compensation insurance is no exception, and the average price paid therefor must be based on the frequency and severity of accidents in the particular industry or branch of industry under consideration. The frequency and severity rates are determined by statistics, which, of course, unless standardized, kept carefully and consistently, and analyzed properly, are liable to be inaccurate and misleadingThe importance of large groups in arriving at an average price for insurance service can not be overestimated, For example the writer knows of one small group of some twenty metal-mining companies whose losses during the past two years exceeded their premium charge by 54%. Not a single individual company during the two years kept its losses below the premium rate. For several years the group as a whole has persistently exceeded its premium rate, Such risks are not profitable to the insuring agencies and can only be carried where a large volume of good risks will balance the poor risks, but in order to conform to good insurance ethics the premium rate must be based on averages for the industry as a whole, and kept sufficiently low to induce operators to sell their risks."

THE interesting paper recently submitted by Messrs. Tobelmann and Potter' shows that chemical problems have developed which are of great interest in this new and important branch of metallurgy. Those who realize what a process of this kind really involves will agree that it deserves a better name than "leaching process." The word leaching conveys the idea that the copper is simply leached out of the ore with acid and then precipitated on iron; the chemistry of such a process would be of little interest. As, however, during the first year's operation of this plant 24,400,532 lb. (11,067,837 kg.) or about two-thirds of the produce, was electrolytic copper, while 7,992,033 lb., or about one-third, was cement copper, it would seem more appropriate to term the process electrochemical. It further appears, from the particulars given, that efforts have been made to have the entire production in the form of electrolytic copper. -This could be done if the chemistry of the problem were kept in balance, so that it would not be necessary to discard any solutions that carried copper and acid of commercial value. A process, such as that under consideration, in which the copper is precipitated from solution by electrolysis, the solvent being at the same time regenerated, is one that requires special chemical and electrochemical knowledge and experience if all the -copper in solution that has been extracted from the ore is to be successfully and economically produced as electrolytic copper. The object of this paper is to discuss, from the practical and theoretical standpoints, the chemical and electrochemical problems involved in the working of a process of this kind, and' which must be solved to keep it in chemical and electrochemical equilibrium. The phenomenon of re-entrainment is seen in environments such as sand dune formation, soil erosion, fugitive dust emission and the spread of radionuclides from accidents involving nuclear weapons. A thorough review of existing literature reveals that work on re-entrainment of dust in mine atmospheres is scant. The present study was undertaken as a part of ongoing research at the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust at the Pennsylvania State University on the development of methods to predict ambient dust concentrations in mine atmospheres (Ramani, 1983). The contribution of re-entrainment to the spatial and temporal concentration of dust in mine airways is being studied. The research has included wind tunnel and in-mine studies. A set of seven experiments was performed under controlled conditions in the US Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. Two types of source coal dust, anthracite and bituminous, were subjected to various airflow rates and were subjected to walking by two different individuals. Six sets of instruments were used along the test section for sampling airborne particles. The average air velocity just above the coal dust bed varied between 2.1 to 3.2 m/sec. Due to re-entrainment as a result of the airflow conditions, the average respirable dust concentration in the center of the mine airway increased to 0.09 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0.03 mg/m3) from an initial value of 0.02 mg/m3. The concentration of all (total) airborne dust increased to 0.17 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0. 10 mg/M3) from an initial value of 0. 02 mg/m3. The action of people walking, however, caused higher amounts of re-entrainment. The average concentration of respirable and total dust at the center of the mine airway increased to values of 0. 28 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 0.12 mg/m3) and 1.53 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 1.0 mg/m3), from initial values of 0.03 and 0.05 mg/m3, respectively. It was observed that the dust concentrations were much higher near the floor, immediately at the end of the coal-dust bed. Depending on the level of activity and the amount of dust deposited in the mine airways, re-entrainment may become an important source of airborne dust in areas away from the point of actual mining.

Understanding energy performance of existing buildings is vital to increasing their efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumptions. This entails facility managers to systematically monitor building energy performance and reliably identify and analyze potential problems. Currently, infrared thermography is widely used as a primary diagnostic tool for the detection of building performance problems. Nonetheless, applications of thermal images for building inspection are mainly restricted to manual and labor-intensive identification and qualitative assessment of heating or cooling loss. Automated identification of potential problems and reliable cost analysis of the associated energy loss can help homeowners to minimize financial risk of retrofits and maximize energy savings. To that end, this paper presents a new automated method for calculating the cost of energy loss for building diagnostics. In the proposed method, first, using a hand-held thermal camera, the auditors collect digital and thermal imagery from the buildings under inspection. Then, using a recently proposed method for Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling, an actual 3D spatio-thermal model is generated and superimposed with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based expected energy performance model. The resulting EPAR model is placed into the method proposed in this paper for cost analysis of the energy loss. Through a new 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d tree structure and nearest neighborhood searching, performance deviations between these models are automatically calculated. Using a temperature threshold, the areas associated with potential performance problems are detected in the EPAR model and are visualized using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. Then, the actual R-values of the detected areas are measured at the level of 3D points. Based on the measured R-values and the estimated air change rate for the detected air leaks, (1) the heat loss or gain caused either by poor insulation or air infiltration/exfiltration and (2) the associated energy costs are automatically calculated. The proposed method is validated on several locations of existing residential buildings. The preliminary results show the potential of the proposed method for minimizing the inspection time as well as the risk associated with the cost analysis of retrofitting potential building performance problems.

Arsenopyrite contains in addition, the diarsenide ion, Asl. The disulfide ion undergoes auto-oxidation in high acidity leading to elemental sulfur and sulfide ion formation: The sulfide ion may oxidize further by oxygen to elemental sulfur if high acidity is maintained. In neutral medium, the disulfide ion does not undergo auto-oxidation but oxidizes to thiosulfate then to sulfate: This leads to the two overall reactions observed experimentally: In acid medium and in neutral medium Covellite and arsenopyrite behave similarly.

Engineering programs usually do not provide sufficient opportunities for students to develop written communication skills. The responsibility for developing those skills is frequently delegated to the humanities faculty, who in a single technical writing course are supposed to transform engineering students into proficient communicators. A general template which was developed for report writing in our senior level capstone design courses is discussed. Students have improved their writing skills by using the template. The writing assignments have provided the students the opportunity to write and revise more technical reports that communicate their design.

Harmonic energetic delamination of T2 building is being considered for demolition at a formerly known atomic lab. The T2 building is within a containment structure that is under a negative pressure of -49 Pa (-0.2 inches of WC) so that no remaining radioactive material is leaked out. The T2 containment enclosure is a portal frame-type system that spans east/west over 35.05 m (114’-11 7/8”) and spaced 2.9 m (9’-6”) apart. The west side of the portal frames is supported by a 64 cm (2’-1”)thick concrete wall which is backfilled to the west and open to the T2 basement to the east. The east side of the portal frames is supported by a 61 cm (2’-0”) thick concrete wall that is backfilled to the east and open to the tank farm vaults to the west. A concrete slab-type footing supports both the east and west walls. Transverse walls provide lateral support for the walls as part of the original design. The west wall has an elevated slab that provides further stiffening of the concrete wall between the transverse walls.

Conventionally, carbon steel has been the primary material for salt mine headframe construction, protected by specialty paint layers to prevent corrosion. These layers require meticulous QA/QC during fabrication and erection, and the top UV protection layer typically loses effectiveness after an average of 10 years, necessitating ongoing maintenance. As headframes age, significant structural repairs are often required. Alternatively, stainless steel can eliminate corrosion concerns, though its high initial cost has limited its use in headframe design. However, when factoring in long-term maintenance costs, a 'maintenance-free' stainless steel headframe can be an attractive option for stakeholders. This paper compares the structural performance and economic considerations of painted carbon steel and stainless steel headframes, including initial capital and long-term maintenance costs. Additionally, it explores a hybrid approach, strategically using carbon steel in low-contamination areas to reduce initial costs and significantly minimize future maintenance efforts.

A geologic study of the Mary Lee Group of coalbeds in the Black Warrior coal basin was undertaken to examine coal stratigraphy and determine regional trends and extent of the coalbeds. The area investigated encompasses 835 square miles in Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa Counties, Ala. More than 700 core logs were used to construct a structure map, coal, interval, and overburden isopachs, and cross sections. There is evidence that structure affected sedimentation. Coalbed isopachs indicate the Mary Lee Group was deposited in fluvial-deltaic and low-lying coastal plain environments. The Mary Lee coalbed is the only coalbed which is continuous throughout the area, commonly with two benches which have a combined thickness of 2 to 12 feet. The Mary Lee coalbed changes rank in the basin from high-through medium-to low-volatile coal. The methane gas potential of the Mary Lee Group coals is estimated to be greater than 1 trillion cubic feet. There is an excellent correlation between the orientation of surface cleats with those measured underground in the Mary Lee coalbed. The face cleats roughly parallel the axes of the area's folds and trend northeast-southwest.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

This report is volume 1 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report contains a statement of the purpose and scope of work of the Grant, and provides an overview of the Master Design Simulator with a brief description of each subsystem. Also included is a discussion of several areas of application for the simulator.

"In the changing global market scenario for raw materials for the steel industry, a number of novel iron- and steelmaking process technologies are being developed to provide the steel companies with economically-sustainable alternatives for iron- and steel-making. In addition, the steel industry is also focusing on reduction of energy consumption as well as green-house gas (GHG) emissions to address the crucial subject of climate change. In this context, it is important to assess these critical issues for the alternate iron- and steelmaking technologies that have been developed. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of energy-efficiency and GHG emissions for some selected iron- and steelmaking technologies that are being considered for implementation. In this work, Hatch’s G-CAP™ and En-MAP™ tools that were developed with the main objective of quantifying and qualifying the potential energy savings and CO2 abatement within the iron and steel industry, were employed in the evaluation conducted. INTRODUCTIONThe iron and steel industry continues to transform itself and evolve in the ever-changing global market place – the raw material scenario is constantly changing with respect to quality and quantity (availability), there is stiff competition in both global and local markets, and there is increasing pressure to address global climate change issues, especially since the steel industry is highly energy- and carbonintensive. There is growing importance of steel production in developing countries such as China and India – this means that the steel industry in these countries will play an important role in defining and shaping the future of the industry.Climate change is expected to present new risks to the steel industry with respect to ensuring a sustainable business. Legislators are proposing to limit GHG emission by placing an implicit price on CO2 emission - market-based “cap and trade”, carbon tax etc.. In this scenario, it is important for the steel companies to reduce exposure to climate-related risks and at the same time, find business opportunities within these risks. Thus, there is a need to strategically manage the climate change risks; the key steps to strategically manage climate change risks are presented in Table 1[1]."
