It is well known that removal of organic material such ,as Jacquer, paint, plastic prior to melting improves aluminum recovery. In addition to being an important economically, decoating of aluminum scrap has a positive impact on the environment, through better control of gaseous emissions. Most of the existing thermal decoaters for aluminum have been designed to operate with scrap containing a level of organic material lower than 10%. The main field of their present application is for recycling of used aluminum can, where levels of organic material are lower than 4%. Alcan has recently developed a new thermal decoating system in order to extend applications of this process to a much wider variety of aluminum scrap. The new decoater efficiently processes aluminum scrap with a level of organic material up to 50%. This new technology features the use of fluidized bed technology to thermally control the process. This innovative feature improves both performance and control over conventional delacquering systems based on hot air convection. This paper describes the basic principles of the technology and the design of the? first industrial unit commissioned by the Alcan Recycling plant in Shelbyville (TN) at the beginning of 1994. Typical applications and operating advantages are discussed.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

"IntroductionA process for production of magnesium by carbothermal reduction was developed at Padentheirm, Austria, by the Austro Americanische Magnesit Corporation& an independent investigation of this and other processes was started in 1937 by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. 10/ A preliminary study of the Radentheirm pro¬cess, as revealed by the meager information then available, demonstrated the following two major disadvantages,The use of hydrogen for shock cooling requires an enormous volume of gas - about 1,000 cubic feet for condensing each pound of metal as a pyrophoric dust which must be completely separated from this gas. Then if the gas is to be recycled for repeated use, the CO produced by the reduction reaction must be separated from the hydrogen. These separations are costly from the standpoint of equipment and operation. 11/The condensate is an impure, pyrophoric metal powder that must be purified and converted to coherent form. This is accomplished by distillation or sublimation of the metal. Distillation on a large scale involves difficulties inherent in the high boiling point (1,107° C.) and the chemical activity of the metal. To avoid these difficulties, the metal is sublimed at 600° C. and of very low pressure. This is quite easily carried out as a batch operation but is a costly procedure. A continuous sublimation process has not been accompli shed."

Many mining companies aim to integrate sustainability principles into their new projects. There is an intention for improvement, but frequently this results in little more than 'business as usual' projects that retrospectively categorise controls for environmental and social risks as sustainability initiatives as part of a public relations exercise. The successful implementation of sustainability requires a change of mind-set and behaviours at an organisational and personal level. In addition, sustainability incorporates a very wide range of interests and technical disciplines. One of the key challenges is in understanding how and when to pull these diverse threads together within a project or organisational process. This paper will explore a number of themes: What does it mean to implement a project in accordance with sustainability principles? How far beyond 'business as usual' is it reasonable to go, and what is the business case for this? Why do the intentions for sustainability sometimes fail and how can we prevent this happening in future? People are instrumental in delivering sustainability; how do we embed sustainability thinking into their behaviours and decision-making? The approaches that have been taken to integrating sustainability in design; what has and has not worked and some of the barriers to integrating sustainability into design? The authors will discuss these themes drawing on case studies from URS' experience in integrating sustainability into large projects. The authors will discuss the need for: a strategic approach which provides a simple framework for tactical decision-making and the consequences of taking tactical decisions in the absence of this framework, alignment of the project team and promotion of a culture of innovation, a shift from a risk/compliance mentality to an opportunity identification mindset, and a systematic approach to integrating sustainability into project design processes.

"The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

This paper presents an application of the newly developed risk-cost-benefit (RCB) framework to support risk management decisions for the selection of wall monitoring technologies at an open cut mine site. The RCB framework quantitatively assessed the risk of unstable slope-induced wall failure and its impact on both loss of life and coal recovery. The RCB framework was utilised in the selection of an optimum group of risk-controls to effectively manage the risk of wall failure to ensure safety and optimal production occurred. The RCB framework incorporates mathematical modules that integrated RCB calculations and risk-control effectiveness assessments to determine the risk reduction and financial impact of the examined safety initiatives.This paper provides an overview of the five-staged RCB framework, incorporating the RCB decision support tools, RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its application to slope stability risk management at the case study site. The RCB charts are designed to display a balance between risk, cost and benefit for easy interpretation by decision makers to support the objective selection of an optimum suite of risk-controls. The RCB analysis revealed that a combination of ævisual inspections, automatic extensometers and radarÆ for fast- and slow-wall failures with structure were sufficient to reduce the probability of loss of life (PLoL) to the æModerateÆ zone as defined by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS, 2007) for the case study site. "This paper delves into the constraints on the nature, origin and thermal evolution of the accretions formed in the uptake shaft of the flash smelting furnace operated by Atlantic Copper in Huelva, Spain, outlining recommended practices for preventing accretion buildup. The accretions were investigated using quantitative electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction and digital imaging techniques, and the experimental data on mineral composition, crystal chemistry and textural relationships were interpreted in terms of thermodynamic phase equilibrium in the SiO2-Fe-O-S system. The results suggest that two distinct types of accretions were formed by the fractional crystallization of two coexisting immiscible melts, under changing conditions of oxygen partial pressure (pO2). The type I accretion of magnetite + delafossite ± cuprite ± tridymite ± metallic copper crystallized from a fractionating copper-rich melt at pO2 above about 10-5 atm, while the type II accretion of magnetite + fayalite + metallic copper + chalcocite derived from a melt with lower copper concentration when pO2 levels dropped below that critical level. Phase compositions and textures were consistent with a cooling history of both compositionally contrasting liquids from about 1,250 °C, the liquidus temperature of magnetite, to eutectic or near-eutectic temperatures of around 1,100 °C. The maintenance of appropriate temperatures — above the liquidus temperature of magnetite — and oxygen partial pressure levels may be critical for the prevention of accretion buildup. IntroductionCopper flash smelting with oxygen-enriched air, an autothermal process developed half a century ago by Outotec (Espoo, Finland), formerly Outokumpu, currently accounts for about 50 percent of the world’s primary sulfide-based copper (Schlesinger et al., 2011). The partial reaction of copper sulfide concentrates produces two separate molten streams, copper-iron-sulfide matte and iron oxide-rich slag, and releases sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas. The matte is sent to converters to remove the remaining iron and sulfur, leaving blister copper with grade of about 99.5 percent copper (Cu), which is cast into anodes for electrolytic refining.The SO2-rich gas generated by the oxidation of sulfide feed particles contains a significant proportion of dust that is entrained in the process off-gas. The gas from smelting is transferred into a waste heat recovery boiler, where it is cleared of dust and cooled before it is converted into sulfuric acid. If the process is not operated properly, the dust-bearing gas may form accretions between the uptake shaft of the flash smelting furnace and the waste heat recovery boiler, causing severe problems in the gas handling system (Swinbourne, Simak and Yazawa, 2002; Miettinen, 2008; Stefanova et al., 2012). Removing the dust accretions usually requires a greal deal of time, effort and resources. Understanding the buildup of accretion may help in reducing the problems and optimizing the process"

OF the many items of information necessary to the successful management of the blast-furnace, few are more important than knowledge of the location and movement of the stock-line: whether the furnace is full and has. been kept so; whether the stock is settling regularly or slipping; and, if slipping, how often it has slipped, at what times, and how far at each time. To obtain these data, a man is sometimes stationed at the top of a. pair of mechanically-filled furnaces, simply to watch and gauge them by hand in the old-fashioned way. - A more recent practice is the suspension of test-rods from ropes leading over pulleys to the ground-level, where the ropes are wound on small drums with graduated peripheries and provided with crank-handles, whereby the skip-man or some other person can quickly and conveniently gauge the position of the stock-line in the furnace. I believe the credit for this great improvement belongs to Messrs. McClure & Phillips of Sharon, Pa., who were, as far as I know, the first to apply it, and who have a patent for it. The valuable indications gained by application of the Uehling pyrometer to the down-comer are Dot to be ignored; but the information thus furnished is somewhat indi¬rect, and there is no scale for the translation of "top-tempera¬tures " into " feet down." Moreover, this apparatus as a whole is delicate, and the cost of its installation and maintenance is high. If the record furnished by the Uehling pyrometer is not in the most desirable form, the test-rods, on the other hand, give no record at all, except through the memory, or notes of a man who, to say the least, is not gauging continuously, and who may omit to report an improperly low stock-line, if it be due to a fault of his own.

Introduction Gunite is a mixture of sand and cement applied to any surface by being shot by compressed air through a nozzle, where it is wetted just before leaving the orifice. The mixture is transported through a hose from a machine called a 'cement-gun'(l). Guniting of rock surfaces has been standard practice at the Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for several years. Where used on walls and backs of cross-cuts; shaft stations, and other rock openings, as an air seal, gunite has eliminated the necessity of constant scaling to keep rock from falling from these places, and, under worse conditions, it has been used in place of timber supports. This has been of definite help in reducing costs, promoting safety, and minimizing fire hazards. During the past year guniting has been quite extensively used here in the rock head-works of the new internal shaft, No. 12, sunk from the 3,875-foot level. Gunite is at present being applied to the stations of that shaft well below a mile from the surface. This paper describes the method of guniting as carried out at the McIntyre, and illustrates how, by the adoption of this process, mining problems connected with scaling and loose ground have been completely solved. It is hoped that the information presented may stimulate discussion and assist in the use of gunite in this and other mines. The guniting method of applying cement was first developed by Carl E. Akeley (2), Curator of the Field Museum, Chicago, in 1907, and was exhibited in New York at the Cement Show in 1910. The museum was located in one of the old World's Fair buildings, built of roughcast and in bad repair. Mr. Akeley, who was a man of inventive nature, set about devising means of applying cement to repair the walls. The cement-gun was the result. Mr. Akeley was a taxidermist of note, a sculptor, and also the inventor of the Akeley camera. In his work, he was in the habit of using fast setting materials to build up foundations for statues, etc.

Recommendations are given for the design of multi-stage spray chambers in which air flows horizontally through water sprays. A detailed description is given of one such spray chamber at Hartebeestfontein gold mine that is used for bulk cooling of the incoming ventilation air, and that has been constructed according to these recommendations. A method for predicting the performance parameters of horizontal multi-stage spray chambers is given, and the method is illustrated with some examples. The method is equally applicable to spray chambers in which the water, rather than the air, is cooled.

"Fire fighting in metal mines under the best of conditions is a dangerous, a slow, and a difficult task. Certain gases generated from combustible material burning in restricted areas are poisonous, even in small quantities, and can not be breathed without serious and often fatal results. In addition to poisonous gases, smoke is given off which obscures the vision of the fire fighter and frequently prevents him from gaining access to the fire area. Many fire-fighting crews have had to turn back because their vision was so impaired by the dense smoke that the fire area could not be located and there was danger of them becoming lost in the mine.In mines having mechanically controlled ventilation - that is, mines not dependent entirely upon natural air currents - the gas and smoke can be forced ahead of the fire-fighting crews, thereby facilitating exploration of the mine and saving the time, energy and oxygen of the mine rescue apparatus crews.Where currents of fresh air can be circulated up to points near the fire without danger of seriously spreading the fire, fresh air bases can be established in the immediate vicinity, and a more intelligent campaign for fighting or controlling the fire can be mapped out.Positive air currents through forced ventilation may also result in saving the lives of miners who otherwise might have been trapped in smoke and poisonous gases.It is generally known that comparatively few metal mines have attempted to regulate or control air currents, with the result that when a fire occurs underground, the normal ventilation may be reversed, short circuited, or the air current may be in one direction one minute and in the opposite direction the next; or, generally speaking, the ventilation can not be depended upon, and smoke and poisonous gases may accumulate in any part of the mine or ""drift"" on the fire-fighters or on the miners endeavoring to escape."

The aim of this investigation was to study the influence that varying production rates have on iron sinter quality. This was done by performing sinter pot tests at different pressure drops over the sinter bed, namely 11 kPa and 15 kPa (for 500 mm total bed depths). During each of the sintering processes temperature-time profiles were recorded of the top, middle and bottom layers of the sinter bed. On completion of the sinter process the sinter cakes were divided into top, middle and bottom layers. The physical properties of each layer were subsequently characterized by performing a tumbler test and a sieve analysis. A comprehensive mineralogical study was also conducted on each layer. This study revealed that sinters of similar cold strength could be produced under the examined production rates. However, a higher production rate was accompanied by an increased amount of fines. The cold strengths of both sinters significantly increased from the top layer to the bottom layer of the sinter bed. This strength variation is not related in any simple way to the phase composition. WHEN men drive haulage equipment ranging up to 22 tons in an open pit operation, they must live with the realization that their safety is dependent upon the machines they drive and how well they operate them. The hazards inherent in their jobs must be recognized, met, and defeated. It comprises a never ending struggle toward perfection-an almost un- obtainable goal. The Jones & Laughlin Benson Mines, at Adirondack State Park in New York, created a safety program which resulted in only one three day lost time accident from April 1948 to April 1952. At the very start of the program, management of the open-pit operation recognized the hazards existing at Benson. The program was designed to meet each danger. With a knowledge of the problem faced, the process of minimizing each facet was planned along lines of maintenance of equipment and training of personnel. Its success is evident. In the ever-present struggle, care and maintenance of machines and application of experience to new equipment design are mainstays. Truck Haulage Benson produced 2.9 million tons of crude iron ore and 1.6 million tons of waste in 1951. To do the job, truck mileage reached 500,000 miles. The tremendous mileage emphasized to safety planners, the fact that the more work done, the greater the possibility of risk in haulage operations. Instrumenting the aim of the safest equipment possible is a methodical servicing program. Like other segments of the drive, the servicing program is based on greater production with fewer accidents. Every truck is serviced at least once per eight-hr shift. Examination includes inspecting and tightening wheel studs, checking tires, steering apparatus, lights, brakes, wipers, heaters, fire extinguishers, and refueling. A running history of the equipment's operating life is kept in the form of service and maintenance records. Machine operators are constantly on the alert for malfunctioning of units. At the first sign of trouble the truck is returned to the garage for exchange. No truck functioning incorrectly is kept on the line, regardless of its shift check schedule. The program resulted in a reduction of the number of costly overhauls and cut down the number of haulage accidents. Miscellaneous Mobile Equipment Auxiliary units, operating within the pit, have presented definite safety problems. The highest accident rate in the pit occurred on trucks carrying water and bits to the churn mills. The weight and awkwardness of bits and drill stems, combined with remote delivery points were direct causes of numerous accidents. Here, the problem has been one of equipment handling, rather than haulage. All air compressors for secondary drilling are truck mounted, facilitating mobility. In addition to making it easier to move the equipment, truck mounting has eliminated many of the hazards connected with relocating machinery. By making air compressors independent of other units, drilling operations have been speeded up considerably. Unseen rocks in the path of moving vehicles are a constant source of tire damage. At Benson the problem has been met by supplying each loading crew with a bulldozer for cleanup operations. The pitman directs the dozer operation, and when truck drivers back into loading areas, he serves as an extra set of eyes. Modern Truck Garage Provides Drive-Through Service Simplicity is the essence of any preventative maintenance program. At Benson, a modern garage, with a drive-through service bay simplifies servicing. Shift inspection of the 22-ton haulage units is accomplished with minimum delay and maximum thoroughness. Mineral processing plants have complicated control strategies, with different control layers, multiple interacting loops, and feedforward disturbance rejection. The complicated control strategies mean that oscillations can arise and propagate to multiple loops and degrade the control performance. Oscillation detection techniques, such as the spectral envelope method, can be applied to detect oscillations within an observation window. However, the start- and end-points of the oscillations within the observation window cannot be identified with current oscillation detection techniques. The start- and end-points would be useful to label the oscillatory intervals, and then to use these labels to identify process conditions associated with the oscillation. In this paper, a pattern recognition technique, Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN), was used to label oscillation intervals. An oscillation diagnosis workflow combining spectral envelope and DBSCAN was demonstrated on an industrial case study of oscillations in a flotation circuit concentrate sump. The workflow successfully detected the oscillation, labelled the oscillatory intervals, and enabled accurate root cause analysis. The impact of time series features, namely the signal power ratio () and the oscillation frequency, on the performance and optimal parameter selection of DBSCAN was also investigated. Low oscillation frequencies and low s negatively affected the performance of DBSCAN. Additionally, the results indicated that higher oscillation frequency was related to higher optimal values for the lag parameter. SOMETIMES the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appears to be a strictly technical society, and if so my paper should deal with the technical operations of finding and producing gold. But I have not been engaged in practical gold mining since 1910. What I have been doing mainly for the last 25 years is to try to figure out what the income of a mine-gold, or any other-would be worth to an investor. So I have been in contact with gold mining, in one way or another, for some 42 years. I say that with a purpose. In that time the industry has been through one of its cycles. The value of gold mines is very dif¬ferent at different points in one of these cycles. For this reason the cycle of gold mining is a highly practical study. The cycle of gold is a more or less rhythmical change in its value or purchasing power measured in the grand average of other commodities, which is the same thing as its price. Taking the price of gold in 1897 as a stand¬ard, a dollar at that time declined to 55c. in 1913, to 26.8c. in 1920, and since then it has risen to 47.4c. in 1930 and to about 64c. in 1932. It is worth about 21/ times as much now as it was in 1920, but less than two¬thirds as much as in 1897. When this change is applied to the value of a gold mine still greater differences are evident. The cost of producing gold is of course measured in labor and other commodities, and as that cost goes down the margin of profit measured in the gold itself increases. Thus a mine which might make only 10 per cent profit in 1920 on its gross output may easily make 25 per cent now. The stockholder gets 2 ½ times more gold that is worth 2 1/2 times as much in purchasing power, therefore the real value of his holding has risen by the one factor multiplied by the other, giving him 61/4 times as much goods or services as he had in 1920.

Sulfides present in the troctolitic and footwall rocks are placed into one of three major zones (hornfels, cloud, and basal) on the basis of their stratigraphic position and mineralogy. Hornfels sulfides, enriched in Fe, represent remobilized sedimentary sulfide. Sulfides from the Cloud Zone are probably magmatic and are enriched in PGE, Cu, Ni, and Ag. The basal sulfides, composing most of the ore, resulted from contamination of the magma by remobilized sedimentary sulfide. The basal sulfides exhibit a differentiation trend in their mineralogy and chemistry. PGE, Cu, and Ag are enriched with increasing differentiation which is attributed to fractionation within an immiscible sulfide liquid.

The mobile telecommunications sector is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. However, increasingly stringent environmental regulations are placing pressure on manufacturers to accept responsibility for end of life products. The companies are therefore exploring avenues to recover the valuable components contained within the mobile telecommunications devices thus reducing the quantities of toxic components going to landfill. Batteries used to power the devices, are typically based on either nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride, or lithium ion cells. They contain toxic metals including nickel, cadmium, lithium, potassium, lead, and cobalt in a complicated arrangement of battery cells surrounded by a metals then plastic casing. The Ausmelt Catalytic Waste Converter (CWC) for waste treatment and recycling is well suited to processing all three mobile phone battery types for the recovery of valuable metals in marketable products that can be recycled to industry without turning out harmful levels of toxic emissions. Ausmelt recently demonstrated the capabilities of its CWC by continuously processing 4.5 tonnes of nickel-cadmium batteries. Using Ausmelt's pilot plant facility in Australia, the nickel-cadmium batteries were processed to produce a nickel iron sulphide (matte), a cadmium fume and a final slag which satisfied CS toxicity leach test criteria and was safe f<~r disposal to landfill. This paper explores the commercial development of the Ausmelt CWC for treating each of the three battery types in light of (a) the outcomes of the recent demonstration, and (b) the current and expected future availability of batteries for processing.

"Environmental regulatory requirements for discharge of solutions and closure of operations for the gold mineral processing industry have been gradually lowered and in certain instances have been targeted to USEP A inorganic drinking water standards for dissolved ions in solution. The use of jar tests for water treatment process development is suitable for preliminary scoping work to be conducted in the research laboratory, as well as for optimization studies at the site of the treatment requirement. This paper will describe experimental methods which were performed using standard jar test equipment in efforts to produce solutions which meet USEP A inorganic drinking water standards after chemical treatment of cyanide solutions. The materials tested included gold bearing pregnant solutions from heap leaching operations, gold plant barren solutions from the Merrill-Crowe zinc cementation gold recovery process and gold heap leach wash solutions after carbon-in-column gold recovery. Experiments included cyanide destruction with sodium hypochlorite and arsenic and selenium co-precipitation coupled with mercury precipitation.IntroductionCyanide leaching solutions are used to selectively dissolve metallic gold from commercially viable mineral deposits. The heap leaching process involves stacking of gold bearing ores on specially designed solution containment pads and percolating alkaline cyanide solutions through the ore to dissolve the gold. Pregnant solutions containing the dissolved gold are collected and sent through a gold recovery process. After selective recovery of the gold, the barren solutions are recycled to the gold extraction process after adjustment of the solution alkalinity and available cyanide concentrations."

(written discussion *).-This paper is particularly interesting to me, because it gives data on a much mooted question, viz., the serviceability of Le Chatelier (platinum-platinum-rhodium) thermocouples under severe industrial conditions. It has always been supposed that platinum-platinum-rhodium thermo-couples, used at high temperatures under strong reducing conditions, would not give long service and were subject to rapid volatilization. The fact, however, that the carefully kept records indicate that a little more than 3 gm. out of more than 830 gm. was lost over this considerable period, shows what kind of service can -be obtained from platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples,, when properly installed, and well cared for. While the writer has no actual figures on the loss of weight, etc. of platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples under service, he was told, by the man in charge of pyrometers at a large industrial plant in which over 400 platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples were installed in furnaces doing various kinds of heat-treating work, that the average maintenance cost, for materials alone, including platinum-platinum-rhodium wires and protecting tubes, was 27 c. per furnace, per month:
