"The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems—has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. NIOSH researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify challenges of and potential solutions for transferability of IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40% of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system based on low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards, to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine, and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communications and tracking infrastructure. INTRODUCTION The nation’s approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communications with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there currently exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or ""things"" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected devices [1, 2]. It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: internet and things. The first one pushes towards a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional internet can be viewed as an internet of computers —i.e., “things” connected to the internet are computers only. IoT “extends” the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in our daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected via the internet, and thus creates a bridge between the virtual word and the physical world."

Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the kinetics of roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite in air at elevated temperatures, in the presence of lime. The effects of temperature, time, air flow rate, particle size, lime type, and mineral/lime weight ratio on the rates of oxidation, lime sulfation, and lime arsenation were studied. The reaction products were identified using chemical analysis, x-ray diffraction, SEM analysis, and optical microscopy. The results are discussed in terms of the utilization of lime to capture sulfur and arsenic during the roasting of refractory precious metal concentrates. More than 99.9% of the arsenic and 98% of the sulfur are contained when roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite with hydrated lime under typical roasting conditions.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

Shortcut methods are commonly employed for estimating mining costs for prefeasibility studies. Most of these methods, however, are suitable for earliest stage studies or for internal discussion purposes only. The experts at InfoMine?s CostMine division recommend that any cost estimate completed for purposes of significant decisionmaking or for compliance with Canada?s NI 43-101 requirements be completed using a determinative itemized method. The same basic principles apply for an early stage, intermediate stage, or advanced stage estimate. The only difference is in the level of detail and effort employed. ? Based on the results of a completed resource estimate, an itemized cost estimate begins with development of a conceptual mine plan. Using a surface mine as an example, four elements are crucial no matter what level of study is initiated. Basic geometry of the ore deposit and waste material, with a determination of the expected ratio of waste to ore, a reasonable pit slope angle, possibly requiring the completion of geotechnical studies to predict the waste-to-ore ratio with certainty. ? Determination of the assumed ore and waste production rates. ? Locations of all ore stockpiles and waste dumps. ? Segmental haulage distances and gradients for ore and waste.

With the extension of mining beneath residential and industrial areas, it is becoming increasingly necessary to extract coal and minerals in such a way that subsidence damage due to groundmovement is reduced to a minimum. Understanding clearly of the mechanism of subsidence development is a must in view of the environmental problems and the energy crisis today. This paper gives a simple analysis of various components resulting from subsidence and the influence of other factors on their development. An up-to-date review of the subsidence and strain profiles is presented, with particular references to the coal mining operations. The importance of this topic from mining damage to structures, buildings properties and environment in mining areas is undeniable. Field results are discussed.

This paper discusses how modern techniques of design and construction were used to create the deep stations for the Copenhagen Metro. The deep stations are located in small squares within the city adjacent to many old and sensitive buildings. The architectural design provides a large open atrium to allow natural light to reach the column free platforms to give the citizens of Copenhagen a feeling of safety and security and encourage them to use the Metro. The design and construction contract was undertaken using the relatively new and untried Eurocodes. The resulting stations set new standards of design for underground metros and have pushed forward the frontiers of what is appropriate construction practice to protect the existing and enhance the future environment.

"In a mining environment, high quality seismic event catalogs are often useful in interpreting local stress states and identifying areas with elevated ground control risk. Installation, operation, and maintenance of local/in-mine seismic networks, however, may be prohibitively expensive, and mine operators may not anticipate the need for seismic data until unusual mining conditions arise. If regional, generally public, seismic instrumentation could be used to reproduce the results generated by local/in-mine instrumentation to an acceptable degree of fidelity, it would be a valuable and inexpensive tool for mine planners and ground control engineers.In this study we apply subspace detection—a non-traditional seismic event detection technique—to data from a sparse, regional network. The process is employed to identify mining induced seismicity (MIS) from an underground coal district. The results are compared to a seismic event catalog produced by a local seismic array operating within the permit boundaries. Additionally, we analyze the performance of two different stations of the same sparse, regional network in identifying blasts at a surface coal mine for which we have a detailed blasting log. In both cases data from stations between 10 and 60 km away from mining activity are used. We also explore the trade-offs between the number of detections and the number of false positives, which is influenced heavily by detection thresholds and the number of stations used in the process.For the surface mine we are able to identify more than 90% of the production blasts documented in the blasting log. We also find that the detected blasts from each of the four active pits produce waveforms similar to one another. The results are not dependent on source-receiver distance, and by requiring detections to occur on both stations the number of sure false positives is reduced to zero. In the underground mining district we identify between 30% and 75% of the events detected by the local array, depending on the acceptable number of false positives and the source-receiver distance. We also find many events that were missed by the local array, showing that regional subspace detection can usefully augment traditional local catalogs. Moreover, subspace detection can provide an estimate on event location and classification using data from as little as one seismic station."

"Continued emphasis on water and energy conservation with less operator attention has created a need for more sophisticated cooling tower controls. A joint Betz/ASARCO project has produced a computerized water parameter controller and automated pumpless feed unit. Interfacing the unit via radio modem to the operator control room computer allows real time system status monitoring. Incorporating SPC principles to monitor and regulate all pertinent parameters yielded enhanced water control. This paper described the system design and present the results of a six month trial.BackgroundReducing operating costs and better manpower utilization are two of the largest concerns confronting maintenance managers today. At the ASARCO plant in Amarillo, a trial has been initiated to prove that it is possible to accomplish both of these objectives by using automated cooling tower control. The system is being adapted from a unit that was designed for continuously operating cooling towers in refineries and power plants by Betz Equipment Systems Division, a subsidiary of Betz Laboratories, Inc. The System l3000™ is designed to continually monitor conditions in the cooling system and to provide adjustments to the chemical balance for corrosion and deposition control. At Asarco, the unit was installed on the Rodline cooling system which operates on an intermittent basis.The primary justification for this project is to reduce costs of the five cooling systems in the plant. Current procedures require an operator to make visual checks every two hours on the five cooling towers as well as run lab tests on the water to insure proper treatment levels. This manpower can be better utilized by controlling the towers and collecting all the data available at one central location, in this case, the boiler house."

[There have been large increases in the oil production and casing-head gas production of certain wells on the Quinn dome (northern part of the Lyons-Quinn field of Oklahoma) caused by large volumes of gas under high pressure entering Vie productive oil sand, The oil production of sore of the leases in this part of the field temporarily increased over 100 per cent within a few days after gas entered the oil sand among the leases that had the greatest increases in oil production wore those on which no gas wells were drilled but which were located up-elope on the structure in reference to gas wells on adjoining properties. It is conservatively estimated that 1,444,000,000, cubic feet of gas entered the productive oil sand and, up to January 1, 1924, caused an increase of about 950,000 barrels of oil from this sand. The casing-held gas volumes of a number of wells producing between 25,000 and 75,000 cubic feet of gas per day increased to several hundred thousand cubic feet and a few walls increased to nearly two million cubic feet per day after extraneous gas entered the oil sand from which the wells were producing.]

(1) The Castleman Basin was investigated by diamond drilling, engineering examination, and geologic study. Agreements permitting investigation of about 14,700 acres of land were entered into with 79 landowners. Eleven beds of coal between the horizons of the Harlem and Mercer beds were penetrated in drilling. These beds from top downward are: Harlem, Upper Bakerstown, Lower Bakerstown, Brush Creek, Upper Freeport Rider, Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Mount Savage, and Mercer. It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. To save time, the original solution of the iron in nitric and sulphuric acids was evaporated to dryness and heated as before until

The use of compressed air or gas in oil wells for raising crude oil to the surface has, within the last year, become a dominant factor In production engineering. Previous application of this principle was largely confined to oil wells that had been pumping for a considerable length of time. In the Seminole area, the gas-air lift has been applied to wells imniediately after natural flow has ceased and in some cases while the wells were still flowing. This early application of the gas-air lift has been watchcd with intense interest by the petroleum industry, both with respect to methods of application and mechanical installations and to the effects on immediate and ultimate production. Methods of Application The Seminole pool at its inception contained sufficient gas associated with the oil to cause natural flow. As no frce gas was found in the main productive horizon, the Wilcox sand, all the gas present was dissolved in the oil, hence the natural flowing life was short, rarely lasting over 45 days. When natural flow ceased, high fluid levels were common, and as depth and crookedness of holes were obstacles to efficient pumping, the gas-air lift was used almost exclusively in raising the oil to the surface. Because of the high gravity of the oil, 41" A. P. I., and its high gasoline content, and also because of the desire to obtain production before offset wells became productive, quantity of production was the aim of the operators and a method of flow was used whereby this aim could be fulfilled. One of the outstanding features of this method consisted in flowing the wells through the annular space between the tubing and rasing. By this means a greater quantity of fluid could be handled than by flowing through the tubing of the size in ordinary use. Wells that would produce only a few hundred barrels on the pump were by this rnethod made to produce as high as 7000 bbl. on the lift. A few days or wreks of production at that rate meant a large recovery of oil. Casing of 636 in. diameter was commonly used as a production string with a 5 3/16-in. liner set on top of the oil sand. FOR nearly 100 years wire rope has been fabricated in much the same way. To the great majority of mine superintendents wire rope is just wire rope, little or no semblance of individuality or identifying characteristics. Such an impression was fairly justified until three or four years ago when a practical means was found of performing or preshaping the wires and strands. This discovery permitted a revolutionary change in wire rope manufacture. Instead of merely twisting a number of wires into a strand, then twisting several strands into a complete rope (which twisting would naturally result in great internal strain, thus reducing the resiliency and over-all efficiency of the completed rope), the preformed wires and strands were laid in place without force or twisting. The obvious result was a rope more nearly approximating mechanical perfection. The applied loads are more evenly distributed throughout the component wires and strands, thus reducing unbalanced wire stresses. This results in a higher safety factor. The fact that preformed rope will not unravel when untied at the ends proves the absence of a torsional stress that exists in ordinary rope. A greater useful allowable stress in the wires is therefore possible in actual operating service.

A theoretical study of the heat-transfer characteristics of a dilute gas-solids mixture in an externally heated tube is reported. Detailed equations are developed describing the system, and a numerical method is presented to solve the equations using a digital computer. The methods are applied to a system containing fine coal particles entrained in hydrogen, flowing through a hot tube. Heat-transfer coefficients and several other physical constants are evaluated in detail.

For decades, natural fibers have been studied as an economical and environmentally viable alternative to use instead of some types of synthetic fibers, for example fiberglass. To find the best way to make composites, the investigations shall be under various configurations, which is extremely important to understand the potentialities and facilities. To aim the comparison of impact performance of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with ramie fabric, the composites were produced by two different methodologies: under pressure and vacuum. The results show that the composites produced under pressure have greater resistance to both the Charpy and Izod Impact than under vacuum conditions.

Copper concentration is becoming more difficult because remaining copper ores are more complex and of finer copper mineral grain size, making copper minerals harder to float because of the fine particle size required to liberate the valuable species. The purpose of this work was to study the flotation behavior of fine copper sulfide ores at different conditions of agitation and aeration. The experimental campaign was carried out in a laboratory Denvertype flotation cell of 1 L volume modified to be operated with forced air that allows decoupling air flow rate and agitation speed. Four ore samples from Chile were used, all of them containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, and tennantite, but with varying grain sizes and compositions. Preliminary flotation tests for establishing the flotation conditions of grinding size and collector dosage were conducted before the kinetic flotation tests that were carried out at different agitation speeds varying from 900 to 1300 rpm for gas flow rate ranging from 1.6 to 7.2 L/min. The flotation products were analyzed by ICP-MS and MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyzer). The results showed that high agitation speeds with corresponding air flow rates resulted in better recovery than moderate agitation speed and air flow rate, and an excess in gas flow rate resulted in bad performances. The flotation rates of the fine copper minerals were improved despite the different improvement rates among the fine size fractions. The impact of these operational variables, however, was different when comparing the results for the four ore samples. While it was found that the order of floatability in the four samples was the same, that is, chalcocite > tennantite > bornite > chalcopyrite, the kinetic constants of the copper minerals in the samples were different, indicating that mineral composition in the sample affects the flotation kinetics.

Micropiles are commonly utilized for applications other than foundation retrofit. In bridges, for example, micropiles can serve as the permanent foundation elements or can be used in temporary support applications. In this paper, a case study on the use of micropiles for the 18th Street Expressway Bridge rehabilitation/repair project in Kansas City, Kansas is presented. In the project, micropiles were utilized for support of six temporary jacking structures, which allowed the bridge to be lifted while repairs were completed. A group of six micropiles was required to support each jacking structure. The required compressive service load per micropile was approximately 300 kips (1300 kN) and the settlement of the micropiles under the service load was to be limited to 0.5 in. (12.7 mm). Two field compression tests were conducted as part of the project. The field load test data was integrated within a soil-structure interaction capacity approach in order to analyze and permit the shortening of the design bond length for the production micropiles.

Introduction The lifting of restrictions on the development of radioactive mineral deposits by private individuals has re-opened the search for uranium in Canada to a large body of professionally trained prospectors. The entry of private capital and experienced prospecting techniques into the search for radioactive minerals has been enormously stimulated by the atomic developments of the past several years; and we can now look forward to the discovery of new productive sources of uranium. The rate of new discoveries will, how ?ever, depend on the effectiveness of the methods used. The large number of new pitchblende occurrences reported within the past several months is largely a measure of the energy with which the portable Geiger-Müller counter has been applied in the field. The counter is simply a 'radio' receiver tuned to one of the products of spontaneous atomic disintegration that is characteristic of all radioactive materials. Its effective use depends largely on how it is applied under the various geological and topographical conditions that ma y be encountered, and also on an understanding of its limitations. Extensive geological information relating to the occurrence of radioactive minerals in Canada has been accumulated during the past several years, and it is now possible to define in a general way many of the geological formations in which pitchblende and related minerals are likely to occur. Furthermore, prospecting can be localized in those parts of the favourable formations that offer the greater promise of containing commercial deposits. In this selection, the Geiger counter is the most useful tool available to the prospector for the actual detection of radioactive materials. As an example, an area of two square miles in the Northwest Territories, within which about a dozen pitchblende occurrences had been found over a several year period by conventional prospecting methods, yielded more than forty-five additional discoveries by application of the Geiger counter. Yet earlier attempts at prospecting this area with the counter had failed, due largely to faulty instruments and lack of experience in field application. The limitations of the counter are very considerable; but, when they are recognized, there is no more useful tool for the discovery of radioactive ores. It was not until 1944 that a practicable portable counter was developed, and then only by co-operation in the field by geologists and physicists. Officers of the Geological Survey of Canada working with physicists of the National Research Council brought about the development of the modern counter.

Introduction The Flin Flon mine of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is on the interprovincial boundary between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, about four hundred miles north of the Canada-United States boundary. The orebodies are gold, silver, zinc, and copper replacement deposits occurring as irregular lenses of massive sulphides, arranged en echelon, and irregular masses of disseminated copper sulphides in chlorite. The country rocks are of Precambrian age, dominantly lava flows. Development of the Mine The mine is opened by two vertical main shafts- the North Main and South Main shafts- 3,800 feet apart. The North Main shaft has a depth of 2,210 feet and the South Main shaft is completed for stoping operations to the 3,250-foot level (see Figure 1). These shafts are connected by main haulages driven, on the footwall side of the orebodies, at 520-foot intervals down to the 2,210-foot level. No. 3 (subsidiary) shaft is on the footwall side of the orebodies at a point between the North Main and South Main shafts, 2,400 feet south of the former. It has a depth of 3,250 feet and connects with all main haulage levels- with both Main shafts down to the 2,210-foot level and with the South Main shaft on the 2,750-, 3,000-, and 3,250-foot levels. Other openings tO the mine include B North fan raise, the opening due to the recovery of the open pit sill pillar, and several back-fill raises.
