"The problems of sampling particulate materials, and of characterizing the distributions of particle size and composition are reviewed. Requirements for sampling from comminution systems are discussed and a simple formula is presented for estimating the minimum sample size needed. The limitations and errors associated with the techniques available for particle size analysis are evaluated and guidelines are suggested for the selection of appropriate methods. The use of microscopic and macroscopic approaches to the characterization of particle composition are discussed.INTRODUCTIONComminution is a process of particle size reduction in which the goal is to produce a material with a specified particle size distribution from a coarser feed. In mineral processing applications, the product size distribution is often qf secondary importance to the extent to which individual mineral grams can be liberated from one another. However, due to poor understanding of the nature of the liberation process and the lack of reliable procedures for characterizing it, the actual specification is normally in terms of particle size.Particle size distribution can be regarded as the fundamental characteristic of a particulate system. The distributions of particle shape and composition among the various particle sizes present are often sufficient to define the bulk properties and behavior of the system. Description of the distributions of size; shape and composition of the different phases which may exist within individual particles is necessary to complete the picture and is especially important for predicting liberation etc., in comminution processes. It is quite obvious that · the complete characterization of real particulate systems is a formidable, if not .impossible task. Practical characterization procedures should involve ·evaluation of those characteristics which are deemed to be important and which can be measured. In comminution systems, this should ideally include the particle size distribution, the size-by-size distributions of particle composition, and as much information as can be acquired on the internal composition and structure of individual particles. In most cases, of course, we fall far short of even this rather limited goal."

Design, fabricate, and test a machine capable of operating in coal seams 48-inches and thicker that can reduce the time, expense, and injury potential inherent in extending and retracting mine-wide section belt conveyors, while eliminating the need to use additional machinery or equipment in accomplishing such moves. The Problem Many underground coal mines use a belt haulage system to move cut coal from the face to the loading area. This system usually consists of a main line belt conveyor fed by section belt conveyors. A shuttle car at the face carries the coal cut by a continuous mining machine to a feeder breaker that breaks the large lumps of coal into smaller, transport-able pieces and unloads them onto the tail piece of the section conveyor. This tail piece is skid-mounted so it can be readily moved as needed. The conveyor is kept close to the face during mining in order to shorten the haul distance of the shuttle cars. Section belts can be lengthened by adding belting, wire rope, and support hard-ware. During pillar retreat mining, these section belts are shortened to keep pace with pillar extraction operations. However, these belt moves, either the extensions or retractions, usually require six to eight workers and three to eight hours to complete. In addition, a 100-foot belt move requires workers to handle up to 4,000 lbs. of material, not including the tail section. Strain and sprain injuries can be incurred during this heavily labor-intensive task. The time required to move the section belt can also create losses in the mine's production. Most pressure oxidation operations introduce oxygen through a large multi-use nozzle in the vapour space of the autoclave. Sparge pipes extend inside the vessel to the point of discharge below the compartment agitator. However, two zinc pressure leach operations have successfully used a bottom entry oxygen sparge system for a number of years. Recently, the concept has been used in a whole ore gold pressure oxidation operation as well as a copper pressure leach plant. Both of the latter operations also introduce cooling water for temperature control through the same sparge pipe. This paper addresses the benefits of the bottom entry system with regards to autoclave performance and the positive effects on agitator performance.

The Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion tests of 18 commercial alloys in H3 P04 -phosphate rock or A1,03 slurry, in 10 pct HF, and in 25 pct H2 SiF6 to simulate three environments anticipated in a Bureau process to extract fluoride values from phosphate rock. Small alloy coupons were rotated in duplicate tests at 4.4 to 21 fps in the slurry at 170° C to determine rates of erosion-corrosion. At 4.4 fps the lowest rates, in mils penetration per year (mpy), were measured for Hastelloy C-276 (<20), Hastelloy B (30), and Inconel 625 (150);the rates increased at 21 fps to 55 mpy, 45 mpy, and 1,000 mpy, respectively. The corrosion rate for all alloys exceeded 40 mpy in either the equilibrium vapor or liquid phases of aqueous solutions containing 10 pct HF or 25 pct H2SiF6 at 100° C. Uniform corrosion in 10 pct HF at 50° C was observed only for Inconel 625 (22 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (43 mpy), and Illium 98 (17 mpy). Inconel 625 (0.75 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (1.3 mpy), Illium 98 (1.7 mpy), and Incoloy 825 (0.45 mpy) were attacked uniformly in 25 pct H2SiF6 at 50° C.

Cumberland Resources Ltd. is currently planning to develop the Meadowbank Gold Project located some 70 km north of Baker Lake, Nunavut in the eastern Canadian Arctic region. The Meadowbank Gold Project currently consists of up to 6 main gold bearing deposits within relatively close proximity to one another which are planned to be mined primarily as a truck-and-shovel open pit operation and using conventional gold milling and extraction. The mining plan indicates that approximately 20 million tonnes of ore will be mined over a mine life of 8 to 10 years. The operation will generate approximately 160 million tonnes of mine waste rock and about 20 million tonnes of tailings. The site is located in an area of continuous permafrost with mean annual average air temperature of -11 °C and average annual precipitation in the range of 100 to 200 mm. Lakes cover a large portion of the site, including some of the ore deposits. The location of the site, and the physical environment, pose challenges to development. This paper presents some of the designs considered to effectively manage and utilize the waste products of mining at the project.

Oil sand analyzers on each conveyor system measure the amount of bitumen and fines in the ore. Cones at the bottom of the feed bin distribute the oil sand to five process lines. Feed flow from each cone is regulated by an apron feeder which transfers the oil sand to conveyors that discharge into the conditioning drums. Weightometers on each of these five conveyors measure the rate at which the oil sand is delivered into the drums. The oil sand feed rate to each drum can be adjusted by varying the speed of the apron feeders."

IN the numbers of the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 27th and July 11th, 1874, there appeared some very complete statistics of the working of some anthracite blast-furnaces belonging to a large establishment in this country, followed by calculations of the heat requirements of the furnaces, similar to those which have been made for European furnaces by Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, Prof. Gruner, Prof. Akerman and others. To the author of these valuable papers, Mr. John A. Church, of New York, the thanks of American iron metallurgists are due for this attempt (the first, to my knowledge at least), to attack systematically and scientifically the problem of economy of fuel in our anthracite blast-furnaces, by applying the formulas obtained from European practice and from the experiments of European metallurgists, to the determination of the amounts and the modes of distribution of the heat production and absorption in our furnaces. In order to facilitate a comparison of the results thus obtained for the anthracite furnaces in question with those obtained for the best types of European coke furnaces, I have reduced to the same standard of heat units (the product of the ton and the degree Centigrade), and placed side by side, the calculations of the heat requirements of one of the furnaces of the Clarence works, as given by Mr. Bell, of a furnace at Pouzin, on the banks of the Rhone, given by Prof. Gruner, and of the anthracite furnaces for 1869-73, as given -by Mr. Church. Table I shows the different conditions of working of the three furnaces, of which Table II gives the respective heat requirements. I have made this latter table in such a manner as to give for each furnace its heat requirements, both according to the views of Mr. Bell and those of Prof. Gruner. Mr. Bell assumes that all the carbonic acid produced by the decomposition of the carbonate of lime of the charge, is reduced to carbonic oxide by contact with solid carbon ; also, that the carbon of the pig iron is a portion of that deposited in the ore in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissociation of carbonic oxide. Prof. Gruner, on the other hand, assumes that all the carbonic acid of the carbonates of the charge escapes unreduced, and that the carbon deposited in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissocia¬tion of carbonic oxide, is again converted into carbonic oxide or

The selection and preparation of activated carbon suitable for specific application can often involve exhaustive adsorbent preparation and testing. This work examined an emerging technique based on modelling the correlation of observed adsorption capacity to the carbon characteristics as a means of decoupling the roles of carbon textural and surface chemical properties. The insights to these specific roles are then used in tailor-making adsorbents and in establishing the optimal carbon properties for specific application. In this study, a series of activated carbons prepared from bagasse by physical and chemical techniques and commercially available carbons were used in developing the models. These carbons were tested for the adsorption of thiourea-gold (I) chloride complexes. Thiourea is an important alternative gold lixiviant with the potential to address current ecological and safety concerns in the extraction of gold. A four-component model, which correlated the adsorption gold capacity to carbon textural and surface chemical properties, was proposed. The model fit was assessed using multi-linear regression and a partial F-test. This was followed by goodness of fit test achieved through r2, adjusted?r2 and mean square error (MSE) values. The results suggest the adsorption of the gold-thiourea complex is strongly influenced by the internal surface area and pH of the carbon. Tailor-made activated carbon from bagasse showed adsorption gold capacities of up to 198 mgAu/g adsorbent, demonstrating the potential of bagasse as a precursor for gold adsorbents and of this empirical modelling approach in developing adsorbents for metal recovery.

"The literature contains many cases where the shape of hydrocyclone efficiency curves vary from the ideal “S” shape. These often appear as changes in slope, or inflections. These inflections can be divided into two categories: “coarse” inflections, which are caused by differences in the density of the minerals being separated, and “fine” inflections, for which there are a number of competing hypotheses concerning their cause. The existing literature addresses either the fine inflection or the coarse inflection, but no studies have reported both types of inflection occurring at once in a single hydrocyclone test. This paper presents hydrocyclone results from both in-plant studies and laboratory experiments that show both coarse and fine inflections. The industrial significance of both types of inflections is discussed. Hydrocyclone efficiency curves show the probability of any given particle reporting to the hydrocyclone underflow as a function of its size. Selectivity functions, S(d), are used to represent the fraction of the feed material in size fraction “d” that reports to the hydrocyclone underflow. Plotting this selectivity function against particle size leads to the standard S-shaped efficiency curve shown in Fig. 1. In the “uncorrected” curve, the tail of the curve does not go through 0%, because a portion of the solids are bypassing classification. This happens as a result of their being carried along by the water, and is most important for the finest particles. The curve can be “corrected” based on the fraction of the feed water that reports to the underflow, represented by the bypass fraction, Rf. The corrected curve then normally passes through 0%, as shown in Fig. 1.The act of correcting the curve shifts the value of the d50 size, which is the size that has an equal probability of reporting to either the overflow or to the underflow. Correcting the curve to account for the bypass fraction makes it easier to compare cyclone performance under conditions that cause the quantity of water in the underflow to change, but that do not alter the actual corrected cut size (d50c).The corrected efficiency curve can be expressed closely by equations such as Plitt (1976):"

This report on the properties of commercial motor fuels sold in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Cooperative Research Council (C.R.C. ) and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior . The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-364 . Further reports on motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 have been issued . No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942 . The present report presents analytical data for 1,120 samples , representing the products of approximately 88 companies . As in previous surveys , these companies include both large and small suppliers . In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received . Conforming to previous surveys , the data cover three groups of samplesregular - price , premium - price , and third - grade gasolines and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples , items and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows : Regular price , 641 samples , 250 items , and 64 brands ; premium price , 439 samples , 222 items , and 68 brands ; third - grade gasoline , 50 samples , 50 items and 19 brands .

Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopuh Structure.—The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah min-ing-district are those of Spurrl aud of Burgess.² In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Brieflyj Burgees regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesitc, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. The Bureau of Mines studied the presplitting technique used for controlling overbreakage in the walls of a vertical shaft at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Littleville Dam project near Huntington, Mass. The periphery of the shaft, the dimensions of which were 16-1/2 feet wide by 21 feet long and 52 feet deep, was presplit (cracked) in the solid to a depth of 48 feet prior to full-depth sinking. Presplitting prevented overbreak in a fairly soft schist and provided sound self-supporting walls which required very little scaling.

It has long been common practice to conduct drilling and blasting operations at surface quarries in the Midwest in close proximity to near-vertical highwalls. The main reasons for such an approach, and the limited use of adequate safety controls, can be associated with higher costs, operational constraints, lithological requirements, property boundary restrictions, inadequate quarry planning, or a lack of understanding of highwall risks. Working in proximity to highwalls, without effective controls, exposes personnel and equipment to increased risk of incidents. In recent history, there have been isolated incidents involving equipment damage, or personnel injury/fatality around the United States. However, the Midwest market has largely escaped the effects of such incidents, even though the exposure rate is high. Awareness about this matter greatly increased on January 19th, 2021, when a significant incident occurred at a quarry near Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a crew was loading a typical blast near a highwall, a ground fall occurred, and multiple rock fragments struck a laborer working on the bench below. This individual sustained significant and life-altering injuries.

THE Tuesday afternoon session", H. A. Bedworth chairman and T. S. Fuller, vice-chairman, was opened with D. J. McAdam, Jr.&apos;s paper entitled "The Influence of Cyclic Stress on Corrosion." This paper dealt with the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion of alloy steels, corrosion-resisting steels, monel metal and aluminum alloys. The paper was discussed by T. S. Fuller, who pointed out that steels under stress corroded more than unstressed steels when subjected to steam.

The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. Since commissioning some significant upgrades have been undertaken such as: • the replacement of the rod mill/ball mill circuit with AG mills and the subsequent conversion of the AG mills to SAG Mills. • the introduction of columns as retreat cleaners in 1987, then reallocated as prefloat cleaners in 1994 and rougher cleaners in 1996.• the repurposing of some rougher capacity to preflotation roughing to remove carbonaceous pyrite and talc in 1994.• the introduction of a Jameson Cell for preflotation cleaning in 2000. • the expansion of the rougher and cleaner circuits in 2002 with the inclusion of 6 x 100 m3 Wemco cells to replace the capacity lost to preflotation and to increase residence time and improve recovery. In 2013 work commenced to replace the cleaner circuit after 40 years of operation. The new cleaner circuit, consisting of 3 x B5400/18 Jameson Cells, replaced the rougher cleaner columns, cleaners, recleaners and retreat Agitair banks and was commissioned in Sep 2015. The new cleaner circuit was configured as two cells in series producing the final concentrate and a cleaner scavenger cell to supplement the existing Wemco cleaner scavenger cells. The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."
