The Hidden Valley Gold Project is located in a remote and mountainous area of the Morobe Province approximately 30 km south of the township of Bulolo and approximately 90 km south-southwest of the provincial capital, Lae. The Hidden Valley deposit was discovered in 1984 with the nearby Hamata and Kaveroi deposits discovered in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Reserves (Harmony, 2009) at these three deposits are 42.1 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 2.9 million ounces of gold and 45 million ounces of silver. A further 5.4 million ounces of gold and 84 million ounces of silver are in the resources category. The process plant is designed to treat 4.2 million tonnes per year of gold/silver ore extracted by open cut mining methods. Ore is classified into three ore types according to oxidation state: oxide, transition and primary. The silver to gold grade ratio is high for the Hidden Valley and Kaveroi ores, generally in the range 15 - 20:1, and much lower for Hamata, typically 1 - 2:1: Primary ore is the dominant ore type at Hidden Valley with sulfur grades up to about two per cent sulfur. Oxide and transition ores are more prevalent at the Hamata deposit, but its primary ore has up to five per cent sulfur grades. Variable ore types, particularly in the initial years of operation, high silver to gold ratios and limited plant site area, due to the challenging terrain, present the main processing challenges for this project. This paper describes the operating strategies and process development for the main areas of this circuit, highlighting selections of processes and equipment that achieve cost effective, yet flexible solutions to the treatment of ores from these deposits.

Diverse and considerable energies are associated with mobile equipment operated and maintained on mine sites. Loss of control of these energies is a common cause of injury on mine sites and this is well recognised by the mining industry. In 2006, 4 multi-national mining companies formed the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMERST), with the aim of engaging collectively with the manufacturers of equipment to accelerate improvements in mining equipment design. Originally focused on surface mining equipment, and particularly haul trucks, the focus of EMESRT widened to include underground and exploration equipment. Since 2006, EMESRT has maintained a program of regular visits and other engagements with a steadily increasing number of manufacturers. The membership of EMESRT has also increased, with 15 companies being members in 2012. An initial step undertaken by the EMESRT members was the development of ?Design Philosophies? which drew of the collective experience of mining companies to identify potential unwanted events which cause equipment related injuries and illness. A technique for analysing risks associated with operation and maintenance tasks, the Operability and Maintainability Analysis Technique (OMAT), was subsequently developed and trialled. In 2011, the EMERST members resolved to propose a common form of safe design information to be requested by all members companies during procurement, and the resulting EMERST Design Evaluation for Equipment Procurement (EDEEP) process was launched at MINExpo in Las Vegas in September 2012. The outcomes of OMAT risk assessment and control activities are integrated during this process into a common ?Safe Design Information? template for communication to prospective purchasers. The aims of requesting manufacturers to follow this process are to provide equipment purchasers with a common way of assessing how well the issues in the EMESRT Design Philosophies are addressed in the equipment design; and to provide manufacturers with additional information for use during equipment design. The process involves identifying priority tasks based on frequency and the severity of the consequences of potential unwanted events identified in the EMESRT Design Philosophies; undertaking a task-based risk assessment of priority tasks in conjunction with site-based personnel; evaluating the effectiveness of control measures; and providing information about safe design features in a standardised format.

"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Recent studies indicate that the United States halt substantial reserves of ilmenite, one of the major titanium minerals. However, the studies showed that sources of rutile, another important source of titanium are limited. This paper summarizes and evaluates results and conclusions reached by the various investigations initiated by the Bureau of Mines and others pertaining to the titanium mineral resources of the Nation. Domestic occurrences of ilmenite that are economically exploitable by present-day beneficiation methods are found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. These deposits are estimated to contain 50.3 million tons of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Occurrences of ilmenite that cannot be processed economically under present technological conditions are found in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. These reserves amount to 51.1 million tons of TiO2. Reserves of rutile found in the United States are estimated to be 1.8 to 2.1 million tons of TiO2. Other than occurrences in Florida and South Carolina, rutile is found either in small scattered bodies or in deposits where the mineral cannot be recovered economically by present beneficiation methods.

The CSIRO ore classification scheme for Pilbara ores was used as a reference frame to target recognisable ore types/textures with potentially elevated phosphorus content for detailed analysis. Particles of each individual ore texture were separated from a Brockman high-P ore and each class was characterised using methods including XRF, XRD, EPMA and synchrotron-based XAS. Results were then correlated with optical microscopy and hand specimen identification to establish any relevant associated mineralogical phases and/or textures. This represents a more systematic approach to identification of high-P ore components based on particle and goethite type and texture. The information can then provide the basis for more targeted P-removal strategies factoring in the relationship between particle/ore texture and phosphorus deportment

Many refineries are in the process of revamping and expanding their existing facilities. Most of the refineries are located in coastal areas due to ease of transportation and storage of crude oil. Considering the criticality of structures as well as prevailing soil conditions, most of the structures are supported on pile foundations. In depth review of sub-surface investigations data followed by liquefaction assessment of the site, it is noticed that site is prone to liquefaction during the seismic event. Among various techniques, driven cast-in-situ piles were selected to mitigate liquefaction. Static cone penetration tests were conducted during the pre and post installation of driven cast-in-situ piles at identified locations. Analysis of cone penetration test data shows that considerable ground improvement has been achieved post-installation of driven cast-in-situ piles.

As part of its research program on secondary metal refining, the Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a fast method for determining aluminum, iron, copper, cadmium, and lead in zinc-base alloys. The new method is intended for use by trained technicians in laboratories with inexpensive equipment. It can be used either in the analytical laboratories of the many small plants that are characteristic of the secondary metals industry or in laboratories engaged in basic research to improve refining processes. A complete analysis for the foregoing elements can be made in less than 3 hours from a single sample in solution. The method is especially helpful when a small amount of sample is available. Aluminum and iron are determined spectrophotometrically and the other elements polarographically. The new method is now being used for control analysis in metallurgical research, and the results compare favorably with previously used spectrographic methods. Luke and Braun4/ described a photometric method for the determination of aluminum in zinc diecasting alloys in which the aluminum was complexed with Aluminon reagent (ammonium salt of aurintricarboxylic acid), forming a red lake. An adaptation of this method was used for determining aluminum. Beers law is obeyed between 0.01 and 0.06 milligram of aluminum.

"The United States’ supply of critical minerals has been a concern and a source of potential strategic vulnerabilities for U.S. economic and national security interests for decades (for example, see Strategic and Critical Minerals Stockpiling Act, 1939). More recently, with the rapid increase in the types of materials being used in advanced technologies (Fortier et al. 2018a), and geopolitical events surrounding the supply of rare earth elements (Ting and Seaman, 2013), among other developments, the critical minerals issue has again achieved a high level of visibility within the U.S. government (Executive Order 13817 (2017)).In this paper, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides an overview of its ongoing focus on critical minerals through the agency’s core competencies in mineral information, mineral resource assessments, geologic and topographic mapping, geophysical surveys and mineral resource research. Aspects of the multifaceted critical minerals issue addressed here include:• Identifying minerals that meet the definition of “critical” provided in Executive Order 13817.• U.S. net import reliance for critical mineral raw materials.• Current status of domestic critical mineral resource assessments.• Current status of topographic and geologic mapping, and geophysical survey coverage of the United States.• The Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) to support future critical mineral exploration.• Critical mineral potential of waste streams from extractive industries.Identifying minerals as criticalU.S. government agencies and other organizations use a number of existing definitions and criteria to identify a mineral or mineral material as critical, strategic or otherwise important. The executive order defined a “critical mineral” to be “(i) a nonfuel mineral or mineral material essential to the economic and national security of the United States, (ii) the supply chain of which is vulnerable to disruption, and (iii) that serves an essential function in the manufacturing of a product, the absence of which would have significant consequences for our economy and national security.” This definition is broadly consistent with that defined by the National Research Council (NRC, 2008) and may be summarized as “essential in use” and “subject to disruption of supply.” Virtually all of the dozens of critical minerals studies conducted since the 2008 NRC report have used some variation of this same definition (Hayes and McCullough, 2018)."

One of the main functions of a process technology and engineering services provider is to select grinding equipment that will meet the client?s throughput rate target. Prudent risk mitigation strategies would suggest that throughput rate estimates be cross-checked using a variety of techniques. Whilst some comminution circuit designers have estimated specific energy requirements via the manipulation of the Bond specific power equation e.g. Barratt?s Grindpower and OMC?s FSAG approach, other designers have opined that the Bond Indices have no role to play in the calculation of SAG mill specific power. As a result, they have developed their own specific energy estimating methodologies, e.g. SMCC?s Drop Weight based power methodology, SPI, SAGDesign, etc. Each method has its supporters and its critics. The challenge facing the engineering provider is how to nominate an SAG mill based circuit throughput rate estimate when faced with significantly disparate specific energies calculated by the different methodologies. This challenge is exacerbated via the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing some of which incorporate HPGR technology as the second stage of pebble crushing. The methodology presented in this paper shows that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for SAG mills in SAB, SABC and SSS circuits. The method accommodates primary crushed feeds, partial and or fully secondary crushed SAG mill feeds, and emulates the impact of pebble crushing on SAG specific energy. As a result, the new Bond Index based method has provided an additional tool for increasing Fluor?s confidence when predicting SAG mill based circuit throughput rates. Based on this outcome, the author proposes that the decades old conundrum of using Bond Indices to calculate SAG specific energies for SAG mill based circuits has been solved.

In recent times, smelter off gases treatment plants have become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Where in the past it was acceptable to process only high strength, treatable furnace gases, new smelters must now treat primary gases and abate dust and SO2 from secondary gases: Processing smelter gases can present some interesting challenges. Some equipment can see varying concentrations of sulfuric acid, up to the boiling point, with a periodic table of contaminates thrown in for good measure. Treating weaker secondary gases have, in the past, been cost prohibitive. Nowadays, new technology, like physical absorption or catalytic carbon, show promise for economically treating low strength secondary gases. Modem smelters do a much better job of treating the SO2 laden gases generated by the smelting process but significant challenges remain.

The integration of digital twins in mining represents a significant advancement towards enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making. Central to this development is the role of visualisation, a crucial element in mining digitalisation. This paper aims to develop a data-driven visualisation solution for the construction of mining digital twins, highlighting how this innovation revolutionises the representation of physical mining environments. It spotlights the shortcomings of conventional visualisation methods, particularly their inability to accurately depict complex underground environments and their predominantly historical orientation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel, data-driven approach. This approach extensively utilises CAD files, encompassing data from geological surveys to intricate mine plans, thereby significantly elevating the precision of digital twins. It supports real-time updates and enables flexible interaction with a variety of data types. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive data diagram alongside the adaptation of a 3D tile index. This strategy ensures the efficient rendering of extensive mining environments, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive digital twin model. In conclusion, the implementation of data-driven visualisation in the construction of mining digital twins marks a pivotal advancement in the industry’s digital transformation. It promises a more detailed, accurate, and dynamic depiction of mining operations.

A Denver Autometrics Particle Size Monitor, PSM-400, was installed at Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. in October 1988. The PSM-400 measures the grind product's particle size and percent solids. The particle size is used to control grind size by automatically adjusting mill feed rate. The PSM's continuous response to ore changes has improved grind product uniformity and mill throughput. Metallurgical testing has shown the PSM's accuracy to be +/-1 % + 150 µm (100 mesh).

Bushveld Belco is commissioning a plant for production of electrolyte used in vanadium redox flow batteries. Owing to the source material, the electrolyte is contaminated with Fe, at concentrations up to 140 mg/L, which negatively affects battery performance. This study examined the use of ion exchange to reduce the Fe concentration to the target value of < 100 mg/L from a feed solution containing 100 g/L V in 4 M H2SO4. Four resins with possible application were identified: Puromet MTS9570, Puromet MTX7010, Puromet MTS9500, and Puromet MTC1600H. Puromet MTS9570 outperformed the other three resins in all batch experiments with respect to loading capacity and selectivity over V, and was evaluated for Fe removal in fixed-bed column loading tests. Based on these data, preliminary sizing and design of a full-scale column was undertaken. Owing to the difficulty of eluting this resin, a philosophy of discarding the resin on loading to full capacity was considered. These data revealed that, despite the high selectivity of this resin for Fe over V, it would be too expensive and impractical to use this resin for full-scale operation under such conditions. It is recommended to remove iron earlier in the flowsheet prior to generation of the 4 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

Annually it is formed more than 95 Mt of clinkers in iron and steel industry of Russia, including 79 Mt of clinkers in blast-furnace, steelmaking, foundry and ferroalloy productions. Complex development of clinkers will provide not only extraction of valuable components, but also preservation of ecosystems. Processing of solid slags is realized, as a rule, in a cold condition by mechanical methods only including stage-by-stage crushing of slag on devices, working on principles of compression and shift (jaw and roll crushers). However it doesn?t provide the complete extraction of metals from clinkers. The intensification of decomposition, in our opinion, can be provided under the use of the devices working on a principle of free kick. At such influence on a material, its destruction occurs on micro cracks, sides of cohesion that is there is a selective destruction of the components possessing various resistances to impact. Decomposition of a piece on the basis of free kick about a material or metal is realized in centrifugal-shock crushers and mills of research-and-production association ?Ural Center?. The share of the joints sharply lowering the efficiency of enrichment thus is minimal. The efficiency of application is proved by morph-metrical measurements with the help of system of image analysis ?SIAMS-600? and physical-mechanical tests of clinkers and their components (impact strength, micro hardness). The experience of application the devices of centrifugal-shock crushing for processing clinkers in blast-furnace, martin and converter productions of Open Society MMC, clinkers of rough-edged copper melt of Joint-Stock Company "Karabashmed" and aluminium clinkers of Joint-Stock Company « Samara plant of aluminium alloys » has allowed to confirm the efficiency of application these devices for selective decomposition of metallurgical clinkers and the opportunity of using clinkers as resource of ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy.

Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. The Mojave Desert is a particularly fragile ecosystem that faces several significant impacts. These include rapid housing development, overdrafted water supplies, and loss of wildlife habitat as a result of mining, industrial activity and urban sprawl. Over the past three years, a diverse group of educators, natural resource managers and business leaders has been assembled under the auspices of a local college to provide unique natural resource education opportunities for the region. By leveraging the collective experience of these present generation natural resource professionals, the Mojave Sustainability Project hopes to provide the next generation of professionals with that knowledge and those technical skills upon which tomorrow’s community can rely. This paper is a case study of how partnerships between academia, government, industry and the community can serve to address the regional social, environmental, and economic needs of today, while investing in the development of those professionals who will balance these needs tomorrow.

Solvent-coated air bubbles in the Air-Assisted Solvent Extraction (AASX) process achieve the dual role of high solvent specific surface area and ease of phase separation. The thickness of the solvent film is of fundamental interest but difficult to measure directly in the process itself. As an approach interferometry (in the UV-vis region) was used to measure the time dependent thickness of a film formed by blowing an air bubble in kerosene-based solvents. The film was stabilized by the presence of 1.5 ppm silicone oil, as employed in AASX. The film appears to comprise two layers; an outer "free" layer of almost constant thickness and an inner "bound" layer which decreased in thickness with time. The bound layer is considered relevant to AASX. For a 20 mm diameter bubble blown in LIX/kerosene solvent the initial thickness was ~ 3 um which decreased over 10 minutes to a final rupture thickness of 500 nm. The bound layer thickness and time to rupture decreased with decreasing bubble size. Correspondence to prior indirect estimates of solvent layer thickness is examined.

Several studies have been conducted on the economic analysis of mining near-Earth asteroids for resources for use in Earth orbit. While these studies use detailed economic figures of merit, they often use many invalid assumptions in the trajectory design. Factors such as the energy and propellant requirements are estimated with analytic methods, however, the stay-time at the asteroid and the spacing of repeated launch opportunities are not taken into account. The work outlined in this paper attempts to combine detailed trajectory design methods with newly defined economic figures of merit to improve the economic assessment of asteroid mining missions.
