(communication to the Secretary): It has always appeared to me that each coalseam has its peculiar character or habit, due to the conditions of its formation, by virtue of which it is either persistent or variable in its section over extended areas. One seam will hold its thickness, chemical character, number and position of partings, beds of slate, etc., over a large area, while another will be found to vary in some of these characteristics every few feet. As the position of the outcrop is an accident of the topography, depending on folding and erosion which have taken place since the bed was formed, no one opening in the outcrop, or, in fact, anywhere else, can supply reliable evidence as to the general character of the seam. To determine the character of an untried seam, a number of sections are necessary from widely separated points, in order to show such variations as may exist. THIS excellent volumetric method commends itself as a means of estimating the fineness of silver firstly, owing to the large number of possible impurities which do not affect its accuracy (these impurities include Cu-up to 70 % Au, Ph, Zn, Bi, Cd, Fe, Mn, Sb, and As); secondly, the method combines accuracy with speed. The above impurities are the only ones likely to be present in the B. H. A. S. Pty. Ltd. refined silver, and, with the exception of Cu and Au, the others, if present at all, would be well under 0.1 parts per 1000.Briefly stated, the method consists in the solution of the refined silver in HN03 , addition of ferric alum (indicator), and titration with an alkaline (either ammonium or potassium) thiocyanate solution until the brown ferric thiocyanate is formed, and gives a definite tint to the solution. The method is used at the Port Pirie smelters, and the outstanding feature in the method as there applied is the type of burette employed. This burette enables the operator to read 0.01 of a cc. with ease, whereas, with the ordinary burette fitted with a float, 0.05 of a cc., when a number of readings have to be taken, becomes very straining to the eyes. Moreover, waiting for the float to rise, and dislodging air bubbles from it, hinders rapid working.A description of the burette and fittings is appended with fig. 2. Rare earth elements and critical minerals have recently become of great economic interest because of their necessity for many new technologies and recent geopolitical unrest affecting the supply and import of resources. The San Juan and Raton basins in northern New Mexico are two structural coal basins that contain elevated concentrations of rare earth elements and critical minerals. These two New Mexican coal basins will be assessed geochemically and petrographically to identify vectors of the rare earth element and critical mineral enrichment. Coalbeds, coal seams, overlying, and underlying rock units will be sampled and characterized to determine any economic viability. Historic data will be compiled into a new and comprehensive coal geochemical database, which will grow with new analyses, and serve as the dataset for this project; this coal resource database will be made available to the public.

The existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel complex is being expanded to include the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel. This will be a subaqueous bored crossing between two islands constructed for the original 1960s immersed-tube tunnel. Jet grouting was employed by the Chesapeake Tunnel Joint Venture (CTJV) to provide watertight base plugs, launch and retrieval blocks for the tunnel boring machine (TBM), a TBM canopy to limit ground movement, and a retaining wall to enable off-island excavation: all within hydraulically placed sands. This paper will review the design and construction challenges, including soil permeability and recharge, grout communication, installed grout strengths, and remediation requirements.

Rapid 3D characterization of multiphase mineral particles in a variety of mineral processing applications is described, including: mineral liberation analysis, grain size, mineral exposure analysis, particle damage, and pore network structure for fluid flow simulation in heap leaching. While micro X-ray computed tomography systems (microCTs) have been used for many years, industrial adoption is limited due to a variety of reasons, including insufficient resolution, the general lack of imaging contrast to differentiate different mineral phases within a multiphase mineral particle and the lack of automated 3D mineral processing software. For example, resolution with industrial CTs and desktop microCT is of the order of tens of microns to a few microns at best, depending on specimen size and CT configuration. We describe a novel lab-based X-ray microscope, XRM, which overcomes these resolution and contrast limitations, notably as the industry is going towards finer grains and more complex ore bodies. Using lens-based optics and detectors (similar to its XRM counterpart in synchrotron beam lines), resolution of the lab based system is in the submicron range with contrast better than conventional microCTs. Hence, visualization, differentiation and segmentation of most mineral phases of interest to the industry are now feasible. Coupling these high resolution and high contrast tomography images with a suite of customized 3D segmentation algorithms and analysis software, applications in mineral liberation analysis for process control, particle damage assessment and other mineral processing applications can be achieved. This non invasive 3D technique which requires relatively little sample preparation is currently being considered for coal, industrial minerals, and base/precious metal ores, complementing existing microscopy techniques such as QEMSCAN and MLA for a variety of applications

THE Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado is believed to contain the richest large deposit of oil shale in North America. The major portion, about 1650 sq miles, is bounded by the White River on the north, the Grand Hogback, which runs from Meeker to Rifle, on the east, the Colorado River to the south, and the drainage basin of Salt and Douglas Creeks on the west. The Basin is a plateau 7000 to 9000 ft high, composed of 3000 ft of the Green River series of Eocene age and surrounded by a steep escarpment of 1000 to 3000 ft. From the escarpment the beds dip gently toward the center. Although oil shale is found in all members of the Green River series, the rich thick beds are found chiefly in the Parachute Creek member. This is normally capped by 100 to 200 ft of the Evacuation Creek, the youngest member of the Green River series. Actually the Piceance Creek Basin oil shale is not a shale, nor does it contain oil. It is magnesium marlstone holding solid organic matter capable of being broken down by heat into gases, some of which can be condensed into oil. The marlstone is resilient nonporous rock, difficult to sample by pick or hammer and moil. Many companies and individuals prospected the Colorado oil shale shortly after the first World War,1 see Fig. 1, but because of the discovery of large quantities of petroleum in the late 1920's in California, Oklahoma, and East Texas, interest in oil shale development waned and did not revive until World War II. In 1944 the writer, employed by the Bureau of Mines, prospected the high grade oil shale in numerous places along the southern outcrop of the Piceance Creek Basin. Several channel samples about 100 ft in length were cut, see Fig. 2. An eightman crew needed a week to cut a satisfactory channel 80 ft long in the cliff face. The Phillips Petroleum Co., the Union Oil Co. of California and others also prospected the oil shale outcrop. In 1945 the Bureau of Mines initiated a core drilling program for the purpose of obtaining accurate samples from the Piceance Creek Basin. The U. S. Geological Survey set up a program for the geological study of the Basin that is still going on.2 Until the end of 1951 a total of 31 holes was drilled for core with diamond drills, and, in addition, cuttings through the oil shale have been obtained from 4 gas wells drilled by standard rotary oil well rigs. "With rapid deterioration in the urban environment caused by air pollution, the possibility of chemical reaction between dimension stone and the industrial waste gases present in the ambient atmosphere remains. The chemical reaction can cause expensive damage to building stone; it is essential that a stone evaluation for use in construction should assess the possibility of this type of decay. This paper endeavours to develop testing procedures for evaluating stone decay in polluted environments. Such tests can accompany other standard tests used in dimension- stone evaluation."

The system Cb-Re was examined in detail utilizing pure metals, careful melting techniques, and heat treatments. Metallographic and X-my methods were utilized for phase identification. In addition to soli-dus determinations, the composition limits and mode of formation of the intermetallic compounds 0 and X were determined. The binary constitution diagram Cb-Re has been the subject of a number of investigations.'-7 Two intermetallic phases have been described and tentative diagrams have been proposed. It was the aim of this investigation to obtain a complete and more accurate diagram through the use of purer alloys and improved techniques. The diagram worked out by Knapton7 was published after our experiments were concluded. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The starting materials were Re powder of 99.95 pct purity, supplied by the Chase Brass and Copper Co., and Cb rondelles of 99.6 pct purity, supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Typical analyses are given in Table I. The alloys were prepared from compacted Re powder and Cb rondelles; for critical compositions master alloys were used. The melts varied from 5 to 50 g and were melted nonconsumably in an Heraeus arc furnace, under ti-tanium-gettered laboratory grade argon. It was necessary to invert the buttons and remelt, followed by crushing and further remeltings, the number of which depended on the nature of the fracture of the alloy. The weight of each alloy was carefully checked after each melting operation. It was found that significant weight losses occurred only when loose Re powder was used. These losses amounted to a maximum of 3 wt pct in such instances, but did not occur after the charge was once molten, regardless of the composition. Typical loss of weight after 4 remelts, including crushing, amounted to 0.2 wt pct. Oxygen pickup during successive melting cycles did not appear to be significant, since the weight gain values never exceeded 0.01 wt pct. Control of the composition of the alloys was not too difficult; however, the problem of homogenization was a far greater one. Optimum alloying conditions were finally achieved by a combination of master alloy production and repeated crushing and remelting cycles. The compositions of the alloys utilized to determine the constitution diagram are listed in Table 11. The weight balance method was used ultimately as the sole analytical method, since repeated checks indicated that it was accurate to 0.2 pct, if the weight losses were small. The results were double-checked by a metallographic study of the homogeneity of the samples, since this was presumed to be the more serious factor. Heat treatments at 1200°C or lower were accomplished by sealing the specimens in Vycor tubes, heating in a Globar furnace, followed by air cooling. This was considered to be an adequate quench because of the very low temperatures involved. For temperatures of 1200" to 1900°, alloys were homogenized and heat treated in a tungsten-filament resistance vacuum furnace. From 1900" to 2750" a tantalum-tube resistance furnace was utilized, operating under a vacuum of 105 mm Hg. The temperature measurements up to 1200" were made by means of platinum-platinum 10 pct Rh thermocouples, with an accuracy of 5°C. All your curves of production, mineralogical, metallurgical, financial, commercial, have taken terrific trigonometrical tangents and you will easily under- stand the sorry position of your competitors. Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility, steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis is easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is always the case in steels poured with hot-top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel. For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep-drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxidation practice, low-carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, - that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, - the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper-central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low-carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel.

History The Aldermac mine is situated on the Nipissing Central railway near the ' centre of the township of Boischatel, Quebec, and is about ten miles west of Noranda. Aldermac Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary company of Towagamac Exploration Company. The property was staked by Messrs. Alderson and MacKay and McMartin, during the winter of 1922-23. During October, 1925, a copper discovery was made by K. W. Fritzsche, who was in charge of exploration work at that time, the first trench on this discovery averaging 8 per cent copper over a width of ten feet. This led to the discovery of another body 200 feet to the north, with an average of 3 per cent copper over fifteen feet in width. A magnetic survey was then carried out which led to the location of the large pyrite ore-bodies which have been developed in the past few years. Development work was carried on to a depth of 1,125 feet, and approximately three million tons of massive pyrite ore was indicated. Extensive metallurgical tests were conducted in the laboratories of the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines at Ottawa to determine the proper metallurgical treatment and the economic possibilities of the ore. Owing to the comparatively low copper content, and the uncertainty of the copper market, it was doubtful if the mine could be profitably operated for the production of copper alone. Messrs. Alderson & MacKay, however, realized the possibility of utilizing the large tonnage of pyrite as a substitute for native sulphur, 'which in past years has been imported into .Canada for the manufacture of acid and sulphate pulp in paper mills. They therefore organized the Sulphite Research Corporation with the object of developing an economical process of utilizing the pyrite.

The green field site is one that has no history of mining and as such it presents the designer with a blank canvas, on which any number of drill and blasting options can be drafted. No matter which mining method is selected all technology and experience will need to be acquired from outside sources, applied quickly and produce the right results. North Limited, in joint venture with the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent), have developed AustraliaÆs first block cave mine at Northparkes in New South Wales, Australia. This innovative and large scale mining project was taken from a green field site in November 1993 to a fully commissioned block cave mine in December 1997. NorthparkesÆ Endeavour 26 mine is now producing at a rate of 3.9Mt per annum from a 27Mt ore block. Prior to 1993 no history of mining activity existed at Northparkes. The rock had never been blasted and many questions were raised about how it would behave. While it was clear that the Endeavour 26 (E26) orebody contained geotechnical properties appropriate to block caving, the blasting methods required to establish a block cave mine had never been used in Australia and no designs were available. The joint venture partners had no prior experience with block caving and it was immediately apparent that this blasting technology would have to be acquired from foreign sources and applied to the unique local conditions. Conceptual designs for the block cave drill and blast were first drafted in 1994, first issued for drilling in December 1995 and first blasted in January 1996. 470 km of drill metres and four million tonnes of rock were blasted to complete the undercutting project by September 1997. This paper will provide those developing new drill and blast projects with an inside view of how one small technical team solved many design challenges to successfully construct AustraliaÆs first block cave mine under strict quality controls and ambitious time constraints.

This report shows the feasibility of predicting drillability, analytically, by using regression analysis techniques. The approach is new in diamond-drilling research. Further, the study shows that this technique may be of value to drill manufacturers and others in mathematically delineating performance characteristics of new drills in specific rock types. Another application might be the prediction of penetration speeds in extraterrestrial material based on the physical properties of the materials as samples become available. Prediction equations for penetration rates are presented for 9 rocks drilled in the laboratory and for 20 rocks drilled under field conditions. The prediction equations are based on drill operating parameters and on characteristics of the rock penetrated. No single physical property appeared consistently in the best predictor equations, and all the physical properties were found to be highly correlated with each other.

During several years of operation in Europe, South Africa and other countries, the Tri-Flo has demonstrated to represent a substantial improvement of the dense medium dynamic separation systems. The reasons are: (1) high sharpness separation due to the multistage system and the application of new concepts in designing the regeneration circuit and controlling the medium rheology; (2) the possibility of performing two cuts at different densities using a since separation device and a single regeneration circuit. The paper discusses in detail the above mentioned points, with particular reference to the multistage technology, based on the circuit analysis theory, and to the control of the medium rheology based on recent work in the modelling, and simulation of the rheological behavior of dense suspensions.

The Bureau of Mines has empirically determined ignition probability versus current for resistive circuits in an 8.3% methane-air atmosphere. Simple ignition probability, defined as the number of ignitions divided by the total number of sparks, was determined, and the corresponding currents were recorded. The experiment was designed to minimize the probability of not observing an ignition that should occur during a series of tests. For resistive circuits in 8.3% methane-air mixtures, the experimental results indicate that ignition was not achieved below 2,000 rnA at 20 V dc, 350 rnA at 30 V dc, 150 rnA at 40 V dc, and 175 rnA at 50 V dc. The simple probability of ignition corresponding to these currents is esti-mated to be, respectively, 1.0 x 10-6, 1.7 x 10-7, 3.0 x 10-7, and 1.0 x 10-5 The ignition mechanism seems to break down below this point, implying that a threshold current value exists below which spark ignition does not occur.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a program to develop small, rugged mechanical dust collectors (scrubbers) with high dust collection efficiency and low energy comsumption for controlling dust in coal mining operations. All of the scrubbers described are similar in configuration and are powered by 6-hp, 2,000-ft3/min vane axial fans. Air pressure differential is less than 6 inches water column. Height of the scrubbers? including fan is less than 14 inches, width is less than 16 inches, and length is less than 45 inches. The flooded fibrous-bed scrubber achieved respirable (less than approximatey 7 µm) dust collection efficiencies of 95 percent. The small-diameter-cyclone scrubbers showed about 92 percent efficiency and can be best where excess water is a problem. The wetted brush scrubber showed 88 percent efficiency at low cost, and the wetted fan scrubber showed a slightly lower efficiency (87 percent) but offered the smallest size and cost. A suitable water droplet eliminator is described.

FOR the third consecutive year, I have collected the data on enrolment and employment of graduates from the schools in. the United States and Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected in the same way as formerly; namely, by questionnaire, dated Jan. 5, 1935, and are therefore comparable with the figures reported for former years. This year, along with the names of the 48 schools in the United States and the six in Canada, are listed the courses offered and the degrees granted by each, school, together with the names of the professors in charge. The names and addresses of the four schools in Mexico are also given. The list is on pages 450-1, which should he valued as a directory by those interested in mineral technology education. So far as is known, this is the most complete and up-to-date list that has ever been published.

We have investigated a new electrochemical process for preparing lead-calcium alloys. Calcium metal, reduced fiom a molten chloride mixture, forms an alloy with liquid lead cathode. The addition of calcium carbonate to conventional CaC12-NaCl electrolyte enables us to avoid chlorine production on the anode and replace it with oxygen and carbon dioxide. The ternary system CaClz-NaC1-CaCO3 has a range of melt compositions, where the electrolysis can be held below 650°C. In order to prevent the side reaction of carbon deposition on the cathode we have separated the anolyte from the catholyte with alumina diaphragm. The factors, which affect the level of impurities and the current efficiency of the process, are discussed.

THE lack of Aryan roots for the names of metals commonly known among the Aryan settlers of Asia Minor, as well as the later colonizers of Europe, indicates that these races were generally ignorant of the use of metals until they came into contact with Semitic peoples. Practically all mining-terms in current use among the earliest Greeks resemble very strongly their distinctly Semitic equivalents, which can be traced all the way in a broad belt beginning in Lower Mesopotamia, and extending westwardly to the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean. The Greek word " "metallon," for instance, used indiscriminately to designate mine or ore, probably came from the earlier Semitic equivalent, " matal." Again, the Greek words " chrysos " (gold) and " chalkos " (copper) seem to be descended from the Semitic forms " throats " and a chalak." It is a natural inference that primitive mining-methods were evolved by the dwellers in the mineralized areas of Asia Minor, from whom later Greek, Roman, and even North European miners obtained their first notions of the reduction of metallic ores, by virtue of a general westward migration of mining and metallurgy. Some traces of its passage through Turkish territory will be noted in this paper. While European Turkey can boast of one ancient gold-field, the Asiatic dominions of the Sultan may lay claim to at least two well-defined and widely-separated gold-producing districts.
