Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their: coal. Sulfur was the major concern. Btu content and sodium limited the market for some plants. The PRB market has now extended to plants that are converting from other coals because of the Clean Air Act. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents that affect boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to improve cost controls. Kerr-McGee Coal's Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

"Various kinds of civil engineering structures and facilities were seriously damaged in the earthquake in Tohoku and Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011 due to the greatness of its magnitude. In contrast, many structures resisted the large seismic force having been reinforced by the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing) method, which is often used for increasing the bearing capacity of ground and improving seismic performance. This paper summarizes the field survey undertaken to investigate damage to structures and facilities reinforced by the CDM method. Several prefectures and metropolitan areas were selected for the survey, based on the occurrence of strong seismic motions. A total of 847 structures and facilities were studied, in the survey using a questionnaire, which mainly inquired about the appearance of structures and facilities. Of the respondents to the questionnaire, 789 replied that there were no seriously damaged structures. The paper presents the damaged and non-damaged sites of CDM-technique sites and non-CDM-techniques sites. It can be concluded from the field survey that the CDM Method demonstrates high efficacy and durability against a strong seismic motions.INTRODUCTIONDuring the afternoon of 11 March, 2011, a huge magnitude-9.0 Mw (Category 9.0 on the Richter scale) earthquake occurred about 25 kilometers below the Pacific Ocean’s surface off the coast of Tohoku. This massive earthquake, now called the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake was the largest earthquake ever observed in Japan. The seismic intensity of this earthquake was measured 7, the maximum on the Japanese intensity scale, as observed 7 in northern Miyagi Prefecture. The earthquake caused severe damage over a wide area from Tohoku to Kanto, and triggered large tsunamis that struck the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kanto. The number of missing and fatalities caused by this earthquake exceeded 18,000 persons, making this an unparalleled earthquake disaster with a cost-in-life toll not experienced by Japan in recent years. Because of the scale of its seismic motions, the earthquake damaged facilities and structures of many kinds. In the years prior to this earthquake, the CDM method was used extensively to increase the bearing capacity of the ground as an anti-seismic countermeasure and to prevent liquefaction. Immediately after the earthquake, the CDM Association visually surveyed the state of damage to about 800 facilities in the Tohoku and Kanto regions where a seismic intensity of 5 or higher was observed. This report summarizes the survey of damage to facilities and structures constructed applying the CDM method in order to confirm the durability and performance of the method against seismic motions."

This paper presents considerations in support of a U. S. oil import policy more restrictive than the present Government import program. A lower level of imports and greater long-range stability in the relationship between imports and domestic production are recommended. Reference is made to increasing world-wide surpluses of oil and wide disparities in foreign vs. domestic costs. Resulting economic forces are held responsible for the increase in imports (excluding residual fuel oil) of almost 300 percent and the change in ratio to domestic crude production from 5.4 percent to 13.9 percent during the period 1946-1956 prior to import restrictions. It is pointed out that these imports continued to increase during the years of import restrictions to a ratio of 17.3 percent of domestic production in 1961. Data are presented showing that increasing oil markets outside the United States provide an outlet' for more than 80 percent of total foreign production, with 90 percent of the increase in foreign production going to foreign markets. Attention is called to the fact that, if there had been no increase in United States oil imports during the past five years, foreign production would have increased by 45 percent in contrast to a static level of domestic crude oil production. The need for a less restrictive import policy in the interest of encouraging foreign oil development, therefore, is questioned. Declines since 1956 in the range of 30 percent in domestic exploratory crews, rotary rig activity and wildcat well completions in the United States are cited, together with a decrease of 9 percent in industry employment and increases of 9 to 18 percent in elements of cost. Recognizing that factors other than imports affect the domestic industry, it is concluded that continuing declines in the vigor, capabilities and competitive structure of the domestic industry can be expected unless further import restrictions are imposed. The public interest in assuring adequate domestic supplies is considered in the light of the role of oil and gas as a source of almost three-fourths of U. S. energy requirements and the economic benefits from petroleum production with a value exceeding the combined value of all other minerals in the United States.

"The automotive industry is under a constant pressure to reduce the weight of vehicles in order to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. As such, there is an ever-growing demand for high strength and high ductility steel grades to meet the need for lightweight automotive components. Over the past decade, the production and application of 2nd and 3rd generation Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) as a lightweight material in automobiles has gained significant popularity due to their exceptional mechanical properties. However, the production cost of these high manganese steel remains high, partially due to the need of large amounts of ferromanganese as alloying material in standard steelmaking processes.The current study introduces a new and cost-effective technology for the production of medium- and high-manganese steels, where self-fluxed micro-pellets of manganese ore will be used as the source of manganese that can be injected into the steel bath. Prior to injection, these pellets are subjected to a pre-reduction process using a mixture of H2 and CO gases, where partial metallization of iron and manganese will occur. Direct injection of the pre-reduced micro-pellets provides less volatilization/emission and higher recovery of manganese, and is capable of producing AHSS with 6–18 wt% Mn.INTRODUCTIONAutomakers are constantly searching for lighter, stronger and cheaper materials in an effort to create safer and more fuel efficient vehicles. The introduction of aluminum alloys and polymer composite materials for automotive applications has been carving into what is traditionally one of the most profitable markets of the iron and steel business. WHAT is a die-casting and what is the die-casting industry? From the literal translation of the words "die" and "casting"' one concludes that a die-casting is a casting made in a die. The casting may be of any metal or alloy or, for that matter, may be of some nonmetallic material capable of being cast, such as plaster of paris or glass. The die may be of any material that will take successive casts so it need not necessarily be metallic in nature. The term "die-casting," therefore, is indeed broad, though in practical usage it has come to mean the casting of metals and their alloys in metallic molds or dies. Even this limitation of the term leaves -a broad field, for castings may be made in a number of different ways. For example, the molten metal may be allowed to run into the die by gravity it may be sucked into the cavity of the die, it may be forced to take the contour of the cavity in the die by centrifiugal force, or it may be forced into the cavity under hydrostatic pressure. The efficient operation of a blast furnace is primarily dependent upon efficient contact between the descending stream of solid materials and the ascending stream of gas. The United States Bureau of dines is conducting a program of research dealing with the interior of the present-day furnace. The work is being carried oat by.(1) observations on commercial furnaces end (2) experiments in the laboratory. Through the courtesy of the officials of the Illinois Steel Co. it was possible to make a detailed investigation of the interior of the shaft of Number.4 furnace at the company's South Works, South Chicago, Ill. The experimental work is to be reported in a U. S. Bureau of Mines bulletin which will include the results of several thousand observations on the interior of the shaft of this furnace. Such of the data as are presented later in this paper constitute only a brief summary.

This article includes the application of roasting pretreatment by assisting the cyanidation process in the recovery of Au–Ag from Bolkardağ Gossan refractory ore and the characterization studies of the ore, roasting sample, and postcyanidation waste sample. While ore contained many metals along with gold and silver, the environment in which these metals were found was carbonate, sulfated, silicated, and iron oxide-containing deposits that have undergone oxidation. In mineralogical studies, there were Fe oxy/oxyhydroxides, Pb/Zn carbonates, and jarosite-bearing structures such as beudantite, calcite, dolomite, clay, and quartz in the ore. The sample used in the experiments was d80 = 29.6 μm, and the test parameters were determined by examining the TG analysis made to the ore. Preroasting experiments were carried out at a roasting temperature range of 200–800 °C, during a roasting period of 10.0 min. Three different samples were characterized by TG for temperature changes, FT-IR for bond structures and permeability, SEM/EDX for visual inspection of structural changes, and XRD Rietveld’s analysis for mineral % content differences. As a result of the cyanidation experiments carried out after the pretreatment, gold was recovered with 80–90% yields and silver with 40–48% yields, respectively.

Development of a global failure criterion for rocks has been a desired goal in rock mechanics. Due to variations in factors affecting rock specifications and their mechanical properties, proposing a single failure criterion suitable for all rock types has proven to be unachievable. The theoretical failure criteria do not fit the real data correctly. Amongst empirical criteria, the Bieniawski criterion has demonstrated an acceptable agreement with laboratory generated data. It has been experienced that the ability to estimate rock strength via the modified form of this criterion is significantly improved. Based on the modified Bieniawski criterion and using VB.net, an associated Microsoft Windows program named 'RAMOCE' has been developed. The inputs of RAMOCE can be triaxial compressive strength data, Bieniawski parameters of a specific rock or the type of given rock. Based on input data, potential outputs of the program are Bieniawski's rock parameters, sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, rock failure prediction and defining the type of given rock.

"The Presidio Parkway Project will reconstruct approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of highway, including seven new bridges, three new cut-and-cover tunnels, and a new undercrossing connecting the Golden Gate Bridge to the City of San Francisco, California. The project site is approximately 5.6 miles (9 km) from the San Andreas Fault, capable of producing magnitude 8 earthquakes. Seismic hazards include strong ground shaking, soil liquefaction, ground settlement, and lateral spreading. The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) long. The MPT site underlain by loose sandy soils susceptible to liquefaction and lateral spreading. Excessive racking and permanent displacement due to lateral spreading are identified as the main seismic vulnerabilities. Analyses showed that without ground improvement, tunnel racking of over 5 inches (13 cm) and permanent lateral tunnel displacement of up to 15 feet (4.6 m) could be anticipated. Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) is proposed to mitigate slope displacements and increase lateral stiffness of the foundation materials to reduce tunnel racking. A series of 2-D fully dynamic time domain analyses were performed to evaluate the performance of CDSM, confirm that performance criteria are met, and optimize the CDSM geometry and replacement ratio. The use of CDSM reduced the permanent tunnel displacement from over 15 feet (4.6 m) to less than 1 inch (2.5 cm). Tunnel racking was also reduced significantly. The adopted analytical approach presented herein can be considered for future tunnel design projects in seismically active areas.Introduction The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are an integral component of the Presidio Parkway project which will replace the existing facility with a new multi-lane roadway between the Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco. The MPT are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) in length. As shown on Figure 1, the project site is located in a seismically active area, about 5.6 miles (9 km) east of the San Andreas Fault and 12.5 miles (20 km) west of the Hayward Fault. The San Andreas Fault can generate magnitude 8 earthquakes while the Hayward Fault is capable of producing magnitude 7.3 earthquakes. The design Peak Bedrock Acceleration (PBA) is 0.46g for the upper level design earthquake. The project alignment is shown on Figure 2."

LUMINESCENT materials have been used in an increasing variety of ways in recent years. Such uses range from the screens on which the picture or image is presented in television and other cathode ray tubes to fluorescent lamps, fluorescent effects in decorative, theatrical, and display lighting, and the many applications of phosphorescence in paints, textiles, paper, and plastics. During the war the screens for a radar set or the "night-seeing" devices were not fundamentally different from those in other cathode ray tubes, but nevertheless they presented special problems for the phosphor manufacturer. It was essential that the "pips" on a radar screen continue to glow after the exciting beam had swept on, but this afterglow would be ruinous to a television screen. In the image tube used for seeing at night with infrared instead of visible light, electrons emitted by an infrared-sensitive receiving surface were amplified and converted to visible light after striking a fluorescent screen. The small size of the screen caused special problems in reducing the grain size of the phosphor to obtain adequate resolution. Other devices used phosphor surfaces which could be stimulated directly by infrared radiation to emit visible light. Energy was stored in the phosphors by prior excitation with short-wave-length radiation, and the stored energy released on subsequent exposure to infrared radiation. Maps, navigational charts, bombing manuals, and computers of various sorts were printed on fluorescent paper or lettered with fluorescent inks. Fluorescent markings excited by small ultraviolet lamps were used on airplane instrument dials. A large amount of research was done to determine the best color for the emitted light and other properties for the fluorescent materials, and on the best methods for their fabrication into the items listed above. Phosphorescent materials found wide use during blackout restrictions to mark safe passageways, to delineate traffic hazards, to identify packages, and to mark tools and other items of equipment.

This paper , describing the operation of the Ward Sand and Gravel Co.'s plant at Oxford , Mich . , is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing sand and gravel throughout the United States . These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used . The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs . It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole . On the other hand , operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed . The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue . The plant described is a dredging operation with many unique features ; especially noteworthy are the mining of the sand and gravel with hydraulic jets operating on the principle of a water ejector , the unusual construction of the dredge and the self- unloading barges that tend it , the transportation of the sand and gravel to shore in barges instead of in pipe lines , the large storage capacity of the plant , and the fact that all material goes into storage before being shipped .

"The Highvale Mine in Alberta is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corpora/ion and operated by Mana/fa Coal Lid. It is the largest coal mine in Canada and in 1982 supplied 8.6 million 1onnes of sub-bituminous ""B"" coal to TransAlta's Sundance Ceneraling Plan/. Annual produclion is scheduled to increase in 1983 when the firs/ unit of the new Keephil/s Generating Plant comes on stream and is expec/ed to exceed 11 million tonnes by 1985 when the second unit is commissioned. Coal is mined from several pits in a multi-seam operation. Comprehensive maintenance, drainage and environmental programs form a major part of the operation.IntroductionThe Highvale Mine is located eighty kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta on the south shore of Lake Wabamun (Fig. I). The mine is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation (T.A.U.) and is operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. In 1982, 8.6 million tonnes of coal were supplied to T.A.U.'s 2100 MW Sundance Generating Plant, making it the largest producing coal mine in Canada. By 1985, with two 375 MW units on line at T.A. U .'s new Keephills Generating Plant, annual production is estimated to exceed eleven million tonnes. The generating plants accept crushed unwashed coal from the mine via the coal handling plant system conveyor belts. The coal is classified as sub-bituminous ""B"" and has an average heating capacity of 18.6 MJ I kg.HistoryPrior to 1943 only small scale mining took place in the Highvale area. Between 1943 and 1961 two strip mining companies, Mount Royal Collieries and Continental Collieries operated on the present mine site. Both operations excavated coal along the south shore of Lake Wabamun."

"A thermodynamic model is developed to simulate nickel flash smelting process. In the nickel flash furnace, oxidation of concentrate occurs at one end, and reduction of slag occurs at the other. The model makes use two zones, namely the reaction shaft/settler zone and the appendage zone and accounts for 6 phases (matte, slag, silica, magnetite, Cu-Ni alloy and gaseous phase), 13 elements (Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, S, 0, N, C, H, Si, Al, Mg and Ca) and 33 chemical components in nickel flash smelting system. The compositions of matte, slag and gaseous phases in equilibrium are calculated by using the data of free energies of formation and activity coefficients of components. Two nickel sulfide species are used to allow for the modeling of sulfur-deficient mattes. The model predictions are compared with the known industrail data from Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, and excellent agreement is obtained. The model can be a very useful tool for monitoring and optimizing the actual industrial operations of nickel smelting process. The distribution behaviors of Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, S and 0 in the nickel smelting furnace depend on the process parameters such as smelting temperature, volumes of air, the content of the elements~ charge and oil.1. IntroductionThe nickel flash smelting furnace essentially consists of a reaction shaft where nickel sulfide concentrate is partially oxidized with air, a settle zone where matte and slag are allowed to separate, and a slag cleaning end where coke is added to provide for the reduction of the oxidized nickel from slag, and electrodes are used to provide heat.The theoretical model to consider a mass balance for copper flash furnace is developed by S. Goto and R. Shimpo[1][2J. However, this can not be true for nickel flash furnace as a whole since oxidation of concentrate occurs at one end (in the reaction shaft/settler), and reduction of slag occurs at the other (in the appendage). Despite these limitations, an acceptable pseudo-thermodynamic description of the furnace can be achieved using essentially two zones, namely the reaction shaft/settler zone and the appendage zone. Compositions of gas, slag and matte in two zones are calculated."

A Discussion of the Paper by Mr. H. A. Guess, read at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1904. MR. JOSEPH P. GAZZAM, Germiston, Transvaal, So. Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :-About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri, I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. A number of determinations of lead in mill-tailings were made in the year 1891; a few of these results are given in Table I.

"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

El presente trabajo señala las bases y resultados que favorecen la recuperación del oro cuando se incrementa la concentración de oxigeno disuelto en la solución lixiviante. En ese sentido, el oxígeno es el agente que incrementa la disolución del oro, y el cianuro, su medio de transporte. Asimismo, aumentar la cantidad de oxigeno disuelto en la solución cianurada de riego mediante el uso de venturis (dispositivos que aspira aire del medio ambiente) logra soluciones cianuradas con concentraciones de oxígeno más altas, de forma se lograría una mejora en el proceso de la extracción del oro.

This paper describes the computer simulation of thermal stress fields generated in the quenching of the ns 415 H Steel automotive parts (Valve Lifters), running the ANSYS Multiphysics software of finite element (FEM). Simulation was performed introducing residual stress measurements on specific values areas, like internal pressure condition in the material. The stress condition effect in the material and the properties as temperature function data, were introduced to the FEM software. The thermal stress simulation was made on the 2D system. The parts were austenized to 850 900 °C and then oil quenched, tempered at 150 -200°C, and air cooled. The X-Ray diffraction technique was made to take measurements from residual stresses on valve lifters surfaces. The results analysis showed the ideal stress condition necessary in raw material to reduce the scrap percent in grind operations after hardening heat treating process. UINQUESTIONABLY the petroleum industry not only can supply the world's present oil requirements but even can meet a considerable increase in demand if it should come. The United States produced last year 1 1/3 billion barrels of crude oil, or more than 60 per cent of the world's total. It could have provided more, if needed, because we has a large shut-in crude producing capacity. Our refining capacity of 4,500,000 0 barrels per day is more than 2 per cent above our average refinery run for 1940. Adequate crude supplies and manufacturing facilities also exist outside of the United States. Large crude reserves exist in South America, in Iran and Iraq, in Russia and Romania, in Sumatra and adjacent islands. The refineries of the Dutch West Indies, of Iran, and of the Netherland East Indies are well located in relation to crude reserves and world trade lanes. Furthermore, flexibility in the manufacturing facilities permits adjustment of yields to meet a considerable range in variations between demands for products. Only with regard to 100-octane aviation gasoline is there any apparent refinery problem. Even here so far as this country is concerned, additional refining facilities can be installed well within the time that would be required to turn out the airplane engines which will use this super fuel.

This paper reviews the trends in the past two years in autogenous grinding throughout the world. It covers rock grinding in South Africa, Sweden, Canada, the United States, Finland and Germany. To properly orient the discussion on this subject, the paper attempts to define and classify the scope of autogenous comminution. As this is a relatively new subject, there is often considerable confusion regarding the various practices, which sometimes differ widely. By clarifying the types and forms, we hope to help clear up this con-fusion. Autogenous grinding is being carried out, throughout the world, either in mills grinding in water or solution or in dry mills using air classification to remove the finished material. The wet grinding, particularly, can be divided into: (1) (2) (3) Primary autogenous grinding, or "run-of-mine" grinding. Secondary autogenous grinding or semi-autogenous grinding or rock pebble grinding. Combination processes. -This covers plants in which pebbles made in the primary mill are re-moved and used as grinding media for fine grinding in secondary mills.
