"Adsorption isotherms of hexyl mercaptan vapour on synthetic sphalerite, zinc sulphide and zinc oxide were de-termined with a gravimetric McBain-Baker micro balance incorporated in the B.E.T. apparatus. Isotherms are given for hexyl mercaptan on synthetic sphalerite at 25°C, 0.5°C and 50°C; on zinc sulphide at 25°C and 1.5°C; and on zinc oxide at 25°C. All these isotherms are sigmoidal, with a definite change in slope at or close to the mono-layer. The amount of mercaptan adsorbed below the monolayer increases almost linearly with relative pressure to P/P0 = 0.8.Above this value, the amount adsorbed increases very rapidly with relative pressure. Hysteresis loops appear in the isotherms for all adsorption-desorption cycles. These loops are completely reversible. It is not possible to desorb the mercaptan monolayer from any of the adsorbents, even at elevated temperatures."

An interesting paper by J. E. Merion and Edward Hart, in Volume I., No. 2, of the Journal of Analytical Chemistry, on the Decomposition of Blast-Furnace Cinder by Acid, describes a plan of sampling the cinder by means of a previously-heated iron bar thrust into the cinder car or into the cinder at the notch, and then allowed to cool, thus chilling the cinder which adheres to the bar, and rendering it decomposable by hydrochloric acid, of 1.12 sp. gr. A short series of results is given, from which the deduction follows that blast-furnace cinder " is decomposed perfectly when chilled." Where many silica determinations are to be made, this method, if reliable, would effect notable economy of time and reagents. The conversion of insoluble silicates by fusion with an alkaline carbonate, together with the subsequent solution, evaporation, drying, etc., is destined to remain the standard method. But all fusionmethods are time-consuming and expensive. Chilling appears to render the supplementary method available for all practical purposes, in the determination of silica in cinder. But, with a view of securing more evidence on the subject, and in view of the fact that uniform results were not obtained by employing this method, it was decided to test the method in the laboratory of the Thomas Iron Company where a large number of silica determinations are made. The experience met with may not be devoid of value, both theoretical and practical. THE following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running¬the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak' of the fire-the aim' shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to he drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede, below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but-in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned hack and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the relatively short pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved.

The electrostatic beneficiation of coal is based on tribocharging characteristics of ash forming minerals and coal particles. The tribocharging of quartz, pyrite and coal particles contacted with various metals and polymeric materials have been measured and the charge acquisition is assessed through surface energy calculations from liquid contact angle data. The contact angles, before and after tribocharging of solids, are measured using Krüss tensiometer and Washburn?s method where the sample holders in tensiometer are specially constructed with tribocharger materials. The charge polarity and amount of charge acquired by quartz, pyrite and carbon with metal tribochargers were found in good agreement with the reported work functions of the contacting surfaces. The charge results with polymer materials differed from the work function values, presumably caused by surface contamination. The surface energy of quartz calculated by all the theoretical approaches in the literature showed that the tribocharging increases the surface energy. Both polar and non-polar components computed from Fowkes and Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble approaches dis-play that both these components increased after triboelectrification. However, the polar component divided into acid and base components, as in van Oss approach, manifest decreasing acid part and increasing base part. Since quartz charged negatively during tribocharging with metal surfaces and therefore accepted electrons, the determined acid and base surface energy components are consistent with charge transfer process. The results also elucidate an explicit correlation between the charges generated by powders and the surface acceptor (acid) and donor (base) electronic states and thereby the work functions. A novel fluidized bed tribocharger was designed and developed with internal baffle system for efficient contact electrification of mineral and maceral to produce high differential charging for efficient separation. The results achieved on coal with 45% ash content are presented and discussed.

Gold deposits in South Africa are invariably associated with uranium bearing minerals. Although it is low grade uranium by international standards, averaging around 0.3 kg U3O8 per ton of ore, recovery of uranium as a by-product improves the overall economics of gold extraction. Moreover, the current high uranium prices as well as increased demand due to renewed interest in nuclear power provide significant incentives for dedicated uranium production. An understanding of the uranium leaching response to changes in operating conditions is an important first step to-wards optimisation of uranium recoveries. In South African acid leaching plants, uranium dissolutions higher than 90% are difficult to achieve, and the chemical origin of this limit is not clear. To study leaching behaviour, an important consideration is the mineralogical characteristics of the ores. Typically, a diagnostic leaching approach can be followed. In this paper, a mineralogy-leachability explanation is presented to rationalise the difficulty in exceeding 90% dissolution from low grade uranium ores on the basis of a simple diagnostic leaching method. It was found that brannerite was the main reason for the existence of a dissolution limit in Witwatersrand ore and that chemical liberation was more effective to increase end dissolution compared to physical liberation. The findings from these investigations will form guidelines for developing economically viable flow sheets for improved uranium recovery, at least in a South African (Witwatersrand) context.

Misfires caused by unreliable shock tube constructions can have significant cost implications and place field workers at serious risk during remediation. Ionomer materials, used as a subtube in shock tube constructions, provide superior hot tack strength, oil resistance, impact resistance at cold temperatures and excellent thermoformability properties. These are important features for resisting blast-throughs and ensuring blasting reliability in demanding environments, such as open pit mining in harsh environments. Superior hot tack strength, strain hardening, and excellent thermoformability properties of the ionomer materials ensure uniform powder distribution along the shock tube during construction and avoid undesired powder accumulation due to deformation or vibration during use. Oil or chemical resistance is another feature of Ionomers. This allows improved property retention in contact with oils and hence longer sleep times of the shock tube. Another feature of these highly engineered ionomers is superior impact strength at low temperatures. This plays an important role considering the resistance to fly rock impact in open pit mining operations in particular in cold climates.

For a number of years many attempts have been made to use thermit in order to do away with piping in ingots. Some of these attempts were successful, while others did not give the expected results. Nearly every plant had its own method of using the thermit, and no special care was taken to study the results or to find the causes for lack of success. Formerly the principle of the process was to decrease the piping by introducing a can filled with thermit, attached to an iron rod, into the head of the ingot directly after it had been poured. In this case the thermit reaction took place in the upper part of the ingot, and it was thought that through the heat produced the head would keep liquid longer and piping thus be reduced. In other words, the aim was to keep the head of the ingot open by making use of the heat of the thermit reaction, which would thereby give the gases in the steel sufficient time to escape. This result can be attained by the application of a large enough quantity of thermit, but it would not be economical in general practice, and could only he used for high-grade material. Many steel-makers abroad and in this country have had this experience. The Th. Goldschmidt A. G., Germany, has, therefore, made a special study of this question with the cooperation of a well-known steel company, and has worked out a new method for the application of thermit for this purpose. The results obtained have been most satisfactory and reliable, and this process is now used in Germany on a large scale in many prominent steel-works. The thermit is applied in cans, as in former years, but the principle of the process is entirely different. The object of using the thermit is not to heat the steel and keep it liquid,

A run of mine, low grade gold heap leaching operation is currently looking to increase ounce recovery by decreasing run of mine fragmentation size. Current blasting practices have resulted in an average fragmentation size of 80% passing 7.05 inches (179 mm). It is estimated that a decrease of 2 inches (51 mm) in the 80% passing fragmentation size has the potential to yield up to a 2.5% increase in the overall life of mine recovery within this ore body. This potential recovery increase could lead to an increase in recoverable ounces which, in turn, would lead to a better profit margin. As this particular deposit is composed of predominantly low grade heap leach the capital investment in a crushing facility was cost prohibitive, it was therefore decided to look into the current blasting practices as a means to improve fragmentation.

The developed processes, the subject of this paper, extract the hydrocarbons, halogenated organic compounds and metal contaminants from hazardous soils, rendering them non-hazardous and ready to be placed back on the ground. The processes first segregate a non-contaminated fraction from the contaminated soil. This initial task is performed using available minerals processing technology: sizing, gravity separation, magnetic separation, froth flotation, etc. The remaining contaminated fraction, is submitted to two leaching operations for the removal of organic and metal contaminants, whenever both are present or to a single leaching operation if only one type of contaminant is present. The decontaminated soil fraction is mixed with the non-contaminated fraction and is placed back on the ground. The leaching liquors, used at neutral pH, are non- hazardous. After decontamination the liquids are processed to extract the contaminants, now valuable materials, for commercialization. Organic contaminants are removed by distillation of the solvents. The metal contaminants are precipitated in their oxide form. In both cases the regenerated solvents are recycled. The decontamination processes are economically competitive with transportation and disposal of the soils to permitted facilities for hazardous materials, and most importantly the developed processes remove the liabilities from the Responsible Parties. The law establishes that these liabilities do not disappear with either fixation nor with transportation and disposal since the environmental liabilities are of the ? cradle to grave? type.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal mines. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to deter- mine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m5 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to be attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

"INTRODUCTIONGomez and Austin (1,2) have recently described calibration procedures for quantitative chemical analysis of particles by energy dispersive spectroscopy using particles mounted and polished in a resin matrix and scanned by an SEM under computer control. Their software is specifically designed for the analysis of Si, Al, Ca, Na, K, Fe and S in coal particles, and in this case the resin is loaded with iodine (3) to enable the exposed cross-section of an embedded coal particle to be differentiated from the matrix. However, the basic ideas of their procedures could be extended to any system of particles where it is desired to measure inorganic species in particles containing light elements such 0, C, H and N which are not directly detected. In these circumstances it is necessary to perform a quantitative determination of the measured components, so that the equivalent volume of light elements in the excited sample volume can be estimated by difference using ZAF and other corrections applied to the raw count intensities.Part of their procedure involves a new technique (2) for estimating background spectrum intensities; the intensity for a particular energy window is then subtracted from the total measured intensity for that window to enable the concentration of the corresponding element to be calculated. In addition, corrections for overlap of peak spectrums are applied. For example, Figure 1 shows some typical spectrums for known materials for the system they used, demonstrating a wide Gaussian spread about the theoretical peak energy. Since background spectrum and peak overlap corrections require a knowledge of the composition of the material, as does the application of the ZAF corrections, it is necessary to have an iterative solution of the equation sets, starting with estimates of the composition based on initial count rate corrected solely for dead time and detector efficiency."

The standard charge weight scaling laws imply that only one particular delay (that possessing the maximum instantaneous charge) contributes to the ppv. However, the present analysis clearly demonstrates that a varying number of blastholes contributes to the ppv. This number also increases with distance, x, between the blast source and the detector, and is caused by waveform broadening due to attenuation. Thus the operative charge weight, itself, is also a function of the distance, and so makes the standard charge weight laws difficult to implement. If the delay time scatter is neglected, then, under certain conditions, relatively simple expressions can be derived for the ppv magnification, FN, as a function of the number, N, of blastholes. When the influence of delay scatter and random fluctuations in each blasthole vibration is included using Monte Carlo simulations, then, to a first approximation, the condition FN=KNx applies, where KN is a constant dependent upon N. Unfortunately, however, for any particular blast this condition cannot be distinguished from the standard charge weight scaling law. The dependence of ppv on N would only be apparent if blasts of differing N were to be compared in an otherwise identical environment. Since this situation is very difficult (if not impossible) to realise, then the influence due to N, although significant, goes largely undetected. Another problem associated with standard charge weight scaling laws is the difficulty of accurately assessing the appropriate charge weight, even if attenuation broadening is neglected. For example, if a number of blastholes are very close, then they experience a vibration interaction which is non-linear. However, if the same blastholes were to be widely spaced, then the separate vibration signatures add linearly. The standard charge weight scaling law fails to distinguish between such linear and non-linear regimes. Unfortunately, in many production blasts, both regimes exist throughout various portions of the blast spatial pattern and so makes it difficult to determine the operative charge weight. The solution to the combined influence of waveform broadening and linear/non-linear interactions will obviously require substantial future research. A possible solution may be found in the use of numerical dynamic codes.

During the past few years the use of mechanical equipment for the loading and transportation of coal at the working face has rapidly increased . Many mining officials are of the opinion that mechanical methods have tended to reduce the hazards of mining, and a number of statements have been made to this effect . Little actual data upon which to base conclusions in regard to the relative safety of various methods of mining have been made available . While it may be possible that these systems of mechanical mining are inherently less hazardous , obvious dangers should not be disregarded in the belief that the mere act of installing mechanical loading equipment automatically brings about better accident records . The same rules and regulations , modified to meet the new regime must be applied with the same discipline as heretofore . By diligent study and application there is reason to believe that new methods of concentrated mining can be utilized with at least a possibility of increased accident performance . With the idea of preventing accidents by taking available precautions against their occurrence , attention should be directed to the dangers that exist where room and face conveyors are in operation . Due to the cost pressure prevalent in the mining industry at the present time mechanical means are often used in an attempt to decrease cost of production. The management , after having spent considerable sums of money for new equipment , is expected by stockholders and investors to show results by increasing tonnage and reducing operating costs . Consequently the operating officials apply the same pressure to local mine officials to obtain results . The natural reaction of the superintendent and mine foreman is to secure the maximum production from the new method , and unfortunately safety is frequently , if not generally , sacrificed to this end . In many instances , operators of new types of mechanical loaders are difficult to secure and after being obtained are difficult to hold , especially if the new equipment is more or less in the experimental stage . The tendency is to handle the machine operators with " gloved hands " and to permit many unsafe practices which ordinarily would not be allowed, in order to keep from antagonizing them and losing their services . Although these unsafe practices become habitual and even uneconomical , conditions thus established are difficult , sometimes impossible , to change .

"The stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a netzsch™ lME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic, goethitic, and saprolitic nickel laterites. Tests on the -2,000 µm sample displayed the effects of selective comminution. The -38 µm product of grinding the -2,000/+38 µm feed confirmed the effects of selective grinding and nickel upgrading. Size classification followed by stirred milling is recommended for nickel upgrading. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was also investigated.RÉSUMÉ le broyage par billes de latérites comportant du nickel offre des possibilités d’amélioration de la libération et de la réduction sélective de la taille des minéraux nickélifères tendres dans les latérites. PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees' Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years' experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

Kimberlites and associated diamonds have been the focus of extensive exploration in central Saskatchewan since 1988. During 1989, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited identified 71 shallow magnetic anomalies in the Fort a la Corne area from detailed aeromagnetic surveys. By the end of 1991, 18 of these targets had been proven, by drilling, to be kimberlite bodies encased within Cretaceous sedimentary strata. From 1991 to 1997, the number of drill-confirmed kimberlite bodies increased to 69. Our current view, drawing on an integration of geophysical and geological information, is that the kimberlites are composed of individual bodies and multi-vent clusters of coalesced bodies, all apparently constructed of stacked, temporally distinct layers of pyroclastic crater-facies kimberlite. Diamond recoveries and geochemical results from associated heavy minerals at Fort a la Corne remain highly variable, although continued minibulk sampling is expected to improve the estimation of diamond grades for the most prospective bodies.

'This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. ULTIMA® are high performance, centrifugal cast, double poured (CC duplex) work rolls. This paper describes the principle of the ULTIMA® roll concept and its wide range of usability. The ULTIMA® concept provides a solution for rod and bar mills to increase performance and output, even under harsh rolling conditions. The main focus is on highly loaded mill stands that require both high wear resistance and resistance against thermal fatigue, like pre-dog bone, dog bone, slitter. Specific case studies of quite different mill configurations and rolled product mix prove the positive impact on production yield, mill and roll shop operations, and profitability in terms of TCO (total cost of ownership).
