Data are presented on the global warming issue to reinforce the decision by the U.S to reject the Kyoto protocol. The evidence that CO2 is a problem rather than a benefit is inconclusive and will be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, for economic reasons alone, the US steel industry will continue to minimize CO2 emissions (and the release of real pollutants) per ton of steel through energy reduction programs. However, relative to inevitable increases in absolute CO2 emissions from the utility industry and the transportation sector, future reductions by the steel industry will be inconsequential in the "big picture."

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A.G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue- gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 2.2000 F for the calcining step and 'a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat- efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. t. alumina per day heat consumption figures of less than 1.400 BTU/lb A12O3 were achieved.

Pulverised coal firing was pioneered in the cement industry prior to the turn of the century. Ash from the coal is absorbed into the mix in the kiln and replaces secondary materials. With high purity limestone coal with high ash content can be used. Fuel cost is a major part of the total manufacturing cost. Cement plants are thus quick to respond to fuel price changes and will use low grade fuels if there is a price advantage. Combustion conditions in a cement kiln differ markedly from a boiler. Flame length is determined by air/fuel mixing but because of fixed secondary air conditions this depends on primary air momentum. Volatile content has some effect on flame length but this can be offset by coal fineness. Much of the heat for cement production is for limestone calcination which is a low grade energy requirement. By allowing long residence time in separate direct fired vessels which then feed the high temperature kiln the energy of materials such as oil shale, tyres and lump lignite can be utilised.

There are various types of natural zeolite deposits in Turkey. Naturally occurring zeolites are excluded from many important commercial applications where uniformity and purity are essential. In this paper, the beneficiation of natural zeolite, taken from western part of Turkey, was investigated. According to X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and mineralogical studies carried out on the representative ore sample, the natural zeolite was found to be in the forms of clinoptilolite and heulandite. Clinoptilolite forms as a devitrification product of volcanic glass in tuffs. Quartz, clay minerals, orthoclase, plagioclase, biotite, seruzite-muskovite and epidote were observed as impurities. Several types of mineral processing methods were performed in order to remove impurities from the natural zeolite sample to produce high purity zeolite. Gravity separation methods such as shaking table and superpanner were carried out for separating heavy minerals, while high intensity dry magnetic separation was used for discarding magnetic minerals.

The interest which has been aroused in prospecting for oil in the foothills of southern Alberta, and in the oil possibilities of the known gas fields situated in the less-disturbed areas, called for a much closer examination of the structure, thickness, and composition of the underlying rocks of the region than had hitherto been made. The areal geology of the larger part of the great plains was outlined by Dawson, McConnell, and Tyrrell, between 1881 and 1885. The foothill area was not critically examined at that time, owing to the time which would have been required for its proper study and the difficulty that was found in recognizing in the foothills the divisions which had been adopted in the mapping of the formations of the plains. This was due in great measure to the paucity of exposures in continuous sections of the lower divisions of the Upper Cretaceous. Since the pioneer work on the plains was published, the beds which form continuations south into Montana have been critically examined, The Canadian beds arch over the end of a flat anticline which rises to the south; and two sections in Montana, one on each side of the anticline, help to explain some of the difficulties previously encountered in the mapping of the measures found in the foothills. The index map, Fig. 1, shows the area studied, and its relation to southeastern Alberta, and to Montana. Problems of Correlation The principal difficulty experienced in correlation was in connection with the measures known as the Montana group. The beds of this group did not seem to agree in the two Montana sections. They showed the same differences to some extent as are encountered in comparing the foothill measures with those of the plains. The primary mine planning focus during early study phases of future mining projects is Life of Asset ore production and grade quality, this will always be the situation. While waste schedule optimisation is generally considered in the latter study phases nearing execution for a limited number of schedule periods only and not a true optimisation considering all attributes such as waste destination location, design, cycle time and closure. This can be particularly applicable in large multi-pit bulk mining operations where one approach to meet Life of Asset ore tonnes and grade targets has been to maintain pit development flexibility resulting in large open pit areas and substantial expit Overburden Storage Area (OSA). FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. Frother influences water recovery through control of bubble size and a chemical effect. De-coupling the two is necessary to establish the extent of the chemistry effect. A setup is described to give steady state water overflow rate (Jwo) along with measurements of bubble size into and on top of the froth. Arguing neither bubble size correlates directly with water overflow, a frother mass balance is solved to estimate the bubble surface area flux in the overflow (Sb0 ). The solution required measurement of frother concentration using TOC analysis and frother adsorption density using surface tension data. The relationship between Jwo and Sbo reveals the frother chemistry effect, quantified for discussion purposes by an equivalent water layer thickness.

One of the most urgent needs in the field of coal combustion is the ability to predict the performance of a coal from knowledge gained from small-scale tests. Numerous types of analyses and tests are conducted on coal, including the proximate and ultimate analyses, heating value, varieties of sulphur, ash analysis, ash fusion temperatures, free swelling index, petrographic analysis, and Gieseler. plasticity. The Illinois Geological Survey has made an intensive study of the value of these tests for judging the performance characteristics of the coal as actually utilized. To date, three reports1,2,3 have been issued, and another is being prepared. The present paper briefly summarizes some of the results found in the studies. Equipment The equipment used for the tests is described in some detail in the above mentioned publications. Briefly, it consisted of a domestic stoker, cast-iron boiler, and water-cooled heat exchanger, which were operated as a forced circulation hot-water system. The entire unit was mounted on scales. Instruments for recording the per- formance of the coal included a hot-water meter to indicate the quantity of water flowing through the boiler; a two-pen, mercury-actuated thermometer to record the temperatures of the water entering and leaving the boiler; a chemical-type meter to record the percentage of CO2 in the stack gases; a pressure gauge to record the static pressure in the stoker-air duct; and a multipoint potentiometer to record the temperatures in the stack and room, and the opacity of the stack gases. A 16 mm motion picture camera was available for taking pictures of either the fuel bed or the scale dial. Procedure The tests described in this report can be conveniently divided into three phases. For the first phase, a load of 5 or 6 tons of unwashed coal (usually screenings) was obtained from each of fourteen Illinois mines. These coals were all crushed and screened to a size of 35 in. (square hole) by 8 mesh. Combustion tests were made on a part of this raw, screened coal. Another portion was passed over a concentrating table to reduce the ash to what was considered to be commercially reasonable, and combustion tests were made on this upgraded coal. The ash content of the remaining coal was reduced to a still lower figure by passing it over the washing table with greater reject, or by standard float-sink procedure. This cleaned fraction was then tested in the stoker-boiler unit. Thus three coals with varying ash content were tested from each mine. For the second phase reported here, coals were obtained from four Arkansas mines and tested as received and after passing over the concentrating table with a normal reject. The atmosphere in part of an air-sealed coal mine was monitored continuously through a drill hole for oxygen content to determine the effectiveness of sealing a mine against the entrance of air and the major force that caused the phenomenon of mine breathing through the overburden. The differential pressure across the seal and the barometric pressure on the outside also were recorded. A general correlation, obtained between the oxygen level, differential pressure, and barometric pressure, indicates that changes in air pressure are the cause for periodic replenishment of the oxygen in the mine. Mine effluent quality was determined by conditions in many sections of the mine and could not be related to the oxygen level at the drill hole.

In this investigation, the effects of T4 and T6 heat treatments of AZ91 magnesium cast alloy have been studied. The effects of different microstructural details such as morphology, size and distribution of precipitates and their influence on fracture mechanisms were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical strength of the alloy after T6 treatment was found to increase in comparison to the T4 treatment, due to the formation of discontinuous precipitates in the grain boundaries. Precipitation in this alloy occurs in two ways: continuous precipitation, which nucleates and grows inside the grains, and discontinuous precipitation, which forms at the grain boundaries. During ageing, the length of the continuous precipitates increases, and, hence, interprecipitate distance decreases. The formation of discontinuous precipitates causes initiation and propagation of cracks at and the weakening of the grain boundaries. This is the principal reason for the reduction of the ultimate tensile strength in T6 heat treatment in comparison to the T4 condition.

The reality of rising electrical power costs and the haunting prospect of decreasing electrical power availability are a threat to the growth of new projects and expansion programmes that could negatively affect the sustainability of mining operations. These threats require the adoption of effective power saving measures aimed at three principal objectives: the elimination of wastage, the reduction of power usage particularly during peak demand periods and, more importantly, improving the efficiency of high power-demand processes. It is reasonable to assume that the greatest impact will be achieved by concentrating on those processes that are large electrical power consumers. For Anglo Platinum operations, mine ventilation and, currently to a lesser extent, mine cooling are two continuous processes that fall in this category. It is estimated that these may consume fifteen to thirty-five per cent of the power delivered to the shaft head-depending on the shaft's design. Mine ventilation systems suffer from inherent, historical inefficiencies that lead to excessive power consumption. Air cooling systems are designed to be energy-wise in terms of modulating refrigeration plant operation to meet the underground requirements while maximizing use of 'free' cooling from surface conditions. Currently about ninety-five per cent of the refrigeration capacity used in Anglo Platinum mines is dedicated to surface bulk air coolers. The net thermal efficiency of these systems is compromised as mines expand in depth and on strike. Looking to the future, this practice will be complemented by more energy demanding underground cooling tactics requiring considerably higher electrical power consumption per unit ton produced. To counter this increase in power consumption, more energy-efficient systems and advantageous transient strategies such as thermal storage and the use of ice-on surface and possibly even underground-are being considered. This paper describes work currently undertaken and planned by Anglo Platinum operations to reduce power consumption by main fans during off-shift periods, the associated efforts currently introduced to reduce underground air leakage, the possibility of introducing more efficient auxiliary ventilation systems, the feasibility of thermal storage, and a brief look at energy recovery system as a means of countering the anticipated power demand associated with underground cooling. A method for estimating geotechnical rock loads for shallow cut and cover subway stations is presented. Localized geotechnical conditions lead to extreme variations in rock loading on the walls of subway structures. Actual lateral rock stress on these structures can range from near zero to over four times the vertical in-situ rock stress. The primary factors affecting the actual lateral stress are intact and rock mass mechanical properties, excavation sequence, localized tectonic conditions, and potential future adjacent structures. The authors recommend using the AASHTO code value of 65 pounds per cubic foot (10 kN/m3) during concept design, followed by numerical analysis of rock wedges and stress measurement for final design.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

NO ADEQUATE salary scale, at the present time, can ignore the increase in the cost of commodities 'during the last few years or- afford to assume that this increase is merely temporary. A study of the change in prices and wages during and after the Civil War is of interest in connection with changes that have taken place from 1913 to 1919. The curves on the accompanying figure, based on reports of the War Industries Board and Department of Labor, show these changes. During the Civil War retail prices rose to 164,2 per cent. of the prices of 1860, during the next 8' or 10 years. It is interesting to note that the rise in wages during the Civil War was almost simultaneous with the rise in the prices of commodities. During the World, War, the rise in wages has lagged about a year behind the rise in prices. Furthermore, in the period immediately, following the Civil War, wages continued to rise after prices started to fall, The present price level is not considered merely temporary by such of our Government agencies as the Department of Labor and the Federal Reserve Board or by such economists as Irving Fisher' and J. Planning and estimating progress rates and costs for tunnelling is always best done based on experience and historic precedent. Much precedent is available but the use of data monitoring, data mining and other retrieval techniques on modern TBM machines can enable this to be further expanded and refined. Advance rates can be related much more closely to rock types as can associated rock bolt and mesh/ shotcrete requirements. This in turn can lead to a further refinement in best likely combinations of equipment, such as shotcrete jumbos, better selected for the anticipated conditions, rather than the potential advance rates of the machine. Efficient and timely construction of the tunnel will also be linked to times needed for finishing work, such as contact and void grouting and to how this can be initiated while the TBM is still in operation, in order to save overall construction time. Indeed, this in turn may affect the most preferable layout and construction details of the permanent tunnel. Considerable experience has been gained in the use of two large diameter TBM tunnel drives through the Himalayas at the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in Pakistan. All the above aspects will be discussed in the paper based on the considerable experience and data which came from that operation, including appropriate measures in highly stressed areas potentially subject to rock burst.

In this final stage of a three-part investigation of the smelting of titania-bearing iron materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted semicontinuous smelting tests in a laboratory electric arc furnace on four concentrates and one are. The objective was to substantiate the significance of liquidus temperature measurements in predicting satisfactory slag compositions in electric furnace smelting of titaniferous magnetites to produce pig iron. Previously obtained liquidus temperature data were used in determining flux requirements. Self-fluxing pellets of either ore or concentrate plus fluxes and reductants were made to produce pig iron and slags containing 0.2 to 0.6 percent titanium. Individual constituents of the slags generally agreed within 5 percent with the value of the corresponding constituent of target composition. Liquidus temperature of furnace slags generally agreed within 50° C of the value obtained from corresponding nominal synthetic slag. The results of the three phases of the investigation may serve as guide-lines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetites and other titania and iron-bearing materials.

It is noteworthy that 80 to 95 per cent of the gross production of all slate quarries in the United States is discarded as waste . In view of the loss involved in handling so much waste , and the consequent added cost of the finished product , the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the slate industry for the purpose of devising the best means of reducing the proportion of waste , and of utilizing the unavoidable waste . The utilization of waste has received special attention , and the cooperation of many prospective purchasers of waste slate has been enlisted in testing its adaptability for various uses .
