To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m (984 ft), while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m (3,280 to 6,560 ft). The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined.

"Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool that may be used to evaluate, design and improve the performance of mineral separation. The traditional LCA methodology provides a comparative evaluation of circuit designs purely from the unit interconnections. The quantitative approach uses the analytical circuit solution to evaluate the slope of the circuit’s partition curve at the midpoint. Since the partition slope is often associated with a separation’s general selectivity, this numeric value is used to compare and rank alternative configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. By itself, this value does not account for the relatively high unit dollar value of pure material or the gains and losses in mass yield associated with alternative circuit configurations. Realizing the value in the LCA methodology, but respecting the limitations of the partition slope valuation, the authors have derived two new performance indicators that quantitatively address pure particle misplacement (the Partition Moment of Inertia) and circuit mass yield (the Yield Score). Together, these parameters provide a better indication of separation economics in typical mineral and coal separation systems. Since the two parameters provide independent information on circuit selectivity and circuit yield, a Pareto efficiency, multi-objective function selection approach is proposed for preliminary circuit selection.IntroductionOver the past 30 years, numerous scientific and industrial studies have proposed various mineral processing circuit design methodologies that attempt to optimize the allocation of separation resources within the processing plant. Over this period, the methodologies have undergone various transitions, including the increased inclusion of process models and computationally intensive algorithms, as well as a general shift from a purely technical solution (Lauder and McKee, 1986) to partially economic solutions (Abu-Ali and Sabour, 2003; Cisternas et al., 2014). Today, circuit design is largely driven by flowsheet simulation; however, no consistent design methodology is used across the industry.One intriguing approach for circuit evaluation is linear circuit analysis (Meloy, 1983a). This method evaluates the separation potential of the circuit solely considering the unit configuration and stream interconnections. No preliminary data other than the basic circuit configuration is required to use the approach."

Historical-From the beginning of time, all ingenuity of mankind has been concentrated upon the methods of finding gold and unusual deposits in the earth. An illustration (Fig. 1) from the old treatise by Agricola, "De Re Metallica," published in 1580, will serve to show the im-plicit faith of that generation in divining methods. However, it was not until 1920 that real progress was made in prospecting by using the latest advances of the physical sciences. The public interest was stimulated by the successes of these methods on the part of commercial oper-ators, and governmental agencies received many requests for information concerning their relia-bility. There were also, in the late 1920's.high- pressure mine-promotion schemes which used geophysical methods in a very questionable manner, symbolized in Figure 2 as of 1928 by an elec-trified forked stick. Authoritative information concerning such practices for public protection was needed to curb such notorious undertakings. Dr. Scott Turner, then Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, thoroughly understood the situation and was first in the governmental de-partments to recognize the possible value of a study of modern prospecting methods. The Bureau of Mines began this investigation by employing Drs. A. S. Eve and D. A. Keys of McGill University for short periods in the summer in 1927. Their first publication [see 1 of "References" at end of paper] served to illustrate the fundamental scientific principles which underlie geophysical prospecting. This was followed by a second publication [21 giving the results of field-tests. In the light of the rapid improvements during the intervening ten years, these two papers take a historical position. Later a full-time position under Civil Service was planned by the Bureau of Mines for con-tinuous investigations and research concerning geophysics and its applications to prospecting. It was Turner's idea that. since the oil-industry had been making very rapid progress with good results, if mineral mining could also benefit to the same degree, it would be of great help to that industry.

The recovery of the constituent components of spent lead acid batteries was pioneered in the early 1970's by M.A. Industries, Inc. MA's main reason for research and development in this area was to recover the polypropylene casings for use as feed stock in their injection molding plants. At that time spent and reject casings were either disposed of or being fed with the lead 'bearing materials into the ,smelting process. M.A. has since developed, built and operated plant for the conversion of scrap casing into reusable copolymer resins. The system is composed, of washing, .sizing, extrusion and pelletizing the polymer into a form which is ready to be injection molded into new products.

THERE are many varieties of limestone, but for the general purposes of the pulp and paper industry, two classifications are sufficient: (1) High-calcium stone, which should be quite free from impurities and contain not less then 90 per cent calcium carbonate. (2) High-magnesium stone, containing not less than 25 per cent of magnesium carbonate. Before proceeding with detail on the use of limestone and lime in the industry, a few words regarding the pulp products made in Canada are desirable. By far the largest tonnage is made by grinding spruce and balsam logs on rotating sandstones or on artificial abrasive stones of the Norton or Carborundum types. This mechanical or groundwood pulp finds its largest use in the production of newsprint paper, of which it comprises about 80 per cent of the total fibrous substance employed-the remaining 20 per cent being unbleached sulphite pulp. No limestone or lime is directly employed in making groundwood pulp, as contrasted with the chemically prepared pulps, all of which require one or the other form of the base for their processing. Sulphite pulps comprise the next largest tonnage group. They are produced by boiling, under pressure and at elevated temperatures, spruce and balsam wood in chip form in solutions of bisulphites and sulphurous acid. The usual bisulphites employed are those of calcium and magnesium. Sodium, potassium, and ammonium bisulphites give progressively better pulps, but to date, in the absence of efficient recovery methods, cost has precluded their use.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of various additions of rare-earth metals or rare-earth oxides on the mechanical properties of cast and wrought plain-carbon steels. Rare-earth metals, as misch metal, were added to medium-carbon steel in amounts to 0.70 weight-percent; rare-earth oxides, as a commercial mixture, were added in amounts to 1.50 weight-percent. The melting and casting of conditioned steels were done in a vacuum-induction furnace, to avoid formation of oxides from the melting atmosphere and to pro-vide better control over chemical composition. At room temperature, data for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness of cast and wrought steels were obtained by standard testing equipment and procedures. Impact tests were conducted on as-cast steel specimens. The greatest amount of tensile ductility and impact strength was obtained in as-cast steel with 0.50 to 0.70 weight-percent misch metal additions. No significant improvement on mechanical properties was indicated in wrought steels containing rare-earth metal additions in the range from 0.10 to 0.70 weight-percent. In general, the rare-earth oxide additions up to 1.50 weight-percent had little effect on the tensile properties of steel in the cast, wrought and annealed, or wrought and normalized condition.

This paper describes the geology of the Kalamazoo copper orebody discovered in the course of an exploration project carried out by Quintana Minerals Corporation under the author's direction in an area immediately southwest of the San Manuel mine, Pinal County, Arizona. In the period 1943-1947, exploration projects were carried out in the San Manuel area by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Magma Copper Company which resulted in the development of the San Manuel underground block-cave mine which is now in production at a rate of 41, 000 tons per day. Mining claims covering the area immediately west of the San Manuel orebody were staked in 1946 by Frank F. Salas, R. A. Buzan, H. G. Buzan, and W. C. Buzan of Mammoth, Arizona. These claims were optioned to Martha Purcell in 1946, and in the period of 1947-1958 seven churn drill holes ranging in depth from 1,400 to 2,950 feet were drilled by Mrs. Purcell. These holes did not intersect ore and no further deep exploration was attempted prior to the Quintana Minerals project which began in August, 1965, and which is described in this report. The Kalamazoo deposit is in Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, T 9 S, R 16 E, Pinal County, Arizona, and it is reached by driving seven miles east from Oracle, Arizona (Figure 1) . The writer is indebted to Corbin J. Robertson and Ronald B. Thompson who participated in the exploration planning of this project and to a number of other individuals who contributed to its execution and management. Petrographic work by J. M. Gold losses must be controlled during extracting processes, especially during cyanidation. Otherwise recovery decreases and therefore the profitability of projects too. One of the phenomena that generate such losses is known as preg-robbing which occurs when some mineral constituent adsorbs aurocyanide complex from a cyanide solution. There are some laboratory methods to identify potential preg-robbing in gold ores, highlighting the PRP method, the BGMI test, and cyanidation tests by conventional agitation without activated carbon (BRP) and with activated carbon (CIL). For this study we performed an initial characterization of a sample from Antioquia - Colombia and then we carried out the methods described above in order to identify the presence of carbonaceous matter. We obtained a percentage of preg-robbing of 78.7% by applying the BGMI test; the preg-robbing potential by the PRP method was 97.9% with an extraction of 0.77% and an inferred recovery of 36.6% if preg-robbing did not occur. Finally we obtained under the BRT test a recovery of 0%, while for CIL test an extraction of 33.6% what confirmed the presence of preg-robbers agents in the gold ore. We conducted all tests in the Institute of Minerals - CIMEX at Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Medellin.

L'augmentation régulière des règlements environnementaux et de la sécurité au travail deviennent de plus en plus strictes. L'usinage fait partie des opérations industrielles qui peuvent causer des problèmes de santé au travail et sur l'environnement. La plupart des particules de poussières produites pendant toutes les opérations d'usinage à sec ou lubrifie causent des nuisances environnementales graves. Le travail propose étudie l’influence des paramètres de coupe, des alliages et des états des matériaux sur la formation des copeaux et sur la génération de poussière lors de l'usinage à sec. Deux modes d'usinage (le fraisage et le perçage) sont abordés. Une loi reliant la ténacité des matériaux aux émissions de poussières est proposée. Les effets des matériaux et de leurs conditions, ainsi que des procédés d'usinage sur la génération des poussières ont été mis en évidence. Des mécanismes de formation de poussières sont identifiés et reliés à la formation des copeaux.

The development of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) is motivated by the automotive industry demands for higher strength steels with better formability and stretch-flangeability to avoid fractures during parts forming. In response to this, the new steel grades must have special microstructures in terms of constitution, morphology, distribution and hardness, which are strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the steel sheet and its processing, especially in the continuous annealing stage, in the case of cold rolled sheets. In this study the influence of the annealing heating rate and intercritical temperature (IT) on the microstructural evolution and the final hole expansion ratio of a cold rolled 980 MPa AHSS grade was evaluated. The annealing process was simulated using a Dilatometer and a Gleeble machine, and the microstructures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and nanohardness measurements. The increase of heating rate resulted in an overlap between ferrite recrystallization and austenite formation, changing the austenite morphology from a random to a fibrous distribution, while a higher IT resulted in more homogeneous microstructures and higher hole expansion ratios. This microestructural homogeneity, confirmed by nanohardness measurements, suggested that the difference in hardness between ferrite and the second phase affects the micro-void formation and crack propagation during the hole expansion test.

In situ metals research to characterize the hydrology of a fractured crystalline rock mass in under-ground mine stopes is discussed. The objective of this study was to find the potential direction, velocity, and concentrations of a lixiviant plume, should leaching solvents (lixiviants) escape from a test stope. The study was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, CO. Since this was a method evaluation site, the lixiviant was simulated using water and acceptable tracers. The site is located in moderately fractured Precambrian migmatite-biotite gneisses of the Idaho Springs Formation. The data required for the characterization were obtained from geologic maps and reports, core logs, and air and water permeability tests. The acquired data were analyzed and applied to a computer model that calculated' the characteristics of a lixiviant plume originating at the stope. A sensitivity analysis showed that dispersivity, ground water velocity, fracture porosity, and fracture spacing had notable effects on the concentration of the plume. Assuming a saturated rock mass, the lixiviant plume would disperse to undetectable levels in a very short time because of a high fracture density at the mine site.

Since 1969, Kaiser has maintained a field-scale reclamation program dedicated to the reclamation of disturbances associated with past and present mining and exploration activities . Since that time, over 1400 acres have been treated using modified forestry and agricultural techniques with encouraging results.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. The strategy has helped the operation with its continual attempts to minimise reliance on high-quality third-party water and improving its interaction with the surrounding environment and community.CITATION:Rodgerson, M, Yates, D and C(te, C, 2013. The basic function of primary gas handling downstream non-ferrous pyro-metallurgical processes is cooling hot sticky gases to treatable temperature levels (e.g. entering ESP). That means managing efficient the critical gaseous components from a molten via a sticky to a solid phase. The article outlines the modem gas cooling methods combined with efficient heat recovery. Examples of the alternative use of recovered steam energy are outlined; as e.g. drying of concentrate and power generation. The heat transfer impact of the insulating dust is called fouling and circumstances causing fouling are described. Modem cooling surface design and cleaning techniques to keep fouling in reasonable limits are described. Leakage- and false air ingress into the gas handling lines often limits smelting capacity. The objective is generally to minimize the infiltration of air but it still takes place at open interfaces (e.g. at reactor hood, feed port). Leakage air at furnace roofs for example can be reduced to a minimum by adopting the pressure gas sealing used at present In-Bath-Lance furnaces. Modernization and optimization methods to de-bottleneck existing waste heat boiler gas cooling capacity by highly efficient surface cleaning systems and false air avoiding (e.g. bundle roof boxes, dust discharge) are detailed described.

If I should appear to criticize some of his findings and arguments, I do not want to leave the impression that I do not appreciate the article; I think Mr. Barbour has been painstaking, and even where one might not agree with his conclusions, he has opened our eyes and stimulated us in our search for the truth.' It might be well to define the term "secondary copper" and to make a few remarks about the origin and the reasons for the variation of the supply. Mr. Barbour has touched on these points, but not sufficiently to make them clear to those not in the business.

Turbulence in stirred tank flotation vessels determines the bulk transport of particles and has an important role in particle-bubble collisions necessary for attachment. Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) produces quantitative measurements of the kinematic motion of different particle classes inside flotation vessels. This paper presents flow profiles of the vessel, residence time distributions, flow profiles through the mesh and macroturbulent kinetic energy distributions as experienced by valuable (hydrophobic) mineral particles in a laboratory scale flotation vessel. The results highlight the impact of the rotor-stator design and a retrofit mesh modification at the upper part of the vessel which improve recovery by decreasing turbulence in the quiescent zone and at the interface. Owing to the 'creeps' and consequent movements in the mines, followed by the recent fire in the southern workings, the whole of the orebody above the 800 ft. level is now very much crushed and broken. The same applies to the hanging wall or overwall coutrny, which has subsided towards the workings, so that for some years past all development work within the lode has had to be carried out with extreme care.The continual but slow subsidence of the overburden into the stopes necessitates a periodical renewal of all gangways in the lode, and, as the subsidence amounts to as much as 60 ft. in places, these new gangways must necessarily pass through the mullock-filling of old stopes in addition to broken ore. They at times pass into the broken ground of the hanging-wall for some distance, where the orebody has widened underneath by the original folding and puckering.

This paper presents a method for calculating the producing rate of a well as a function of time following steam stimulation. The calculations have proved valuable in both selecting wells for stimulation and in determining optimum treatment sizes. The heat transfer model accounts for cooling of the oil sand by both vertical and radial conduction. Heat losses for any number of productive sands separated by unproductive rock are calculated for the injection. shut-in and production phases of the cycle. The oil rate increase caused by viscosity reduction due to heating is calculated by steady-state radial flow equations. The response of successive cycles of steam injection can also be calculated with this method. Excellent agreement is shown between calculated and actual field results. Also included are the results of several reservoir and process variable studies. The method is best suited for wells producing from a multiplicity of thin sands where the bulk of the stimulated production comes from the unheated reservoir. The flow equations used neglect gravity drainage and saturation changes within the heated region. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a calculation method which can be used to predict the field performance of the cyclic steam stimulation process. The calculation method enables the engineer to select reservoirs that have favorable characteristics for steam stimulation and permits him to determine how much steam must be injected to achieve favorable stimulation. While the calculation represents a considerable simplification of physical reality and the results are subject to numerous assumptions which must be made about the reservoir, it has been found that realistic calculations can be made of individual well performance following steam injection. The duration of the stimulation effect will depend primarily on the rate at which the heated oil sand cools which, in turn, is determined by the rate at which energy is removed from the formation with the produced fluids and conducted from the heated oil sand to unproductive rock. A complete mathematical solution to this problem is a formidable task, and finite difference techniques would undoubtedly have to be used. The calculation method pre- sented here utilizes analytic solutions of simple related heat transfer and fluid flow problems. The method is sufficiently simplified that it can be used as a hand calculation, although the calculations are somewhat lengthy and laborious. For that reason, the analysis was programmed for an IBM 7044 digital computer. Well responses observed at the Quiriquire field in eastern Venezuela&apos; have been matched using this program after making suitable approximations for reservoir and wellbore conditions. One of the most valuable uses of this calculation method is to assess the effect of reservoir and proc-cess variables on the stimulation response. This paper contains results of several studies made of key reservoir and process parameters. Among the most important of these is the influence of prior wellbore permeability damage. If a well is severely damaged prior to stimulation, a higher stimulation response will be observed than if it is undamaged. If a portion of this damage is removed, a permanent rate improvement will occur. THEORY I)ES(:KJJ&apos;TION OF CALCULATION METHOD The process of cyclic steam stimulation is essentially one of reducing oil viscosity around the wellbore by heating for a limited distance out into the formation through the injection of steam. Suitable modifications of the calculation technique presented here can be made so that stimulation of wells by hot gas injection or in situ combustion can also be calculated. A schematic drawing of the heat transfer and fluid flow considerations included in the calculation method is shown in Fig. 1. In brief, the calculation assumes that the oil sand is uniformly and radially invaded by injected steam. For wells producing from several sands, each sand is assumed to be invaded to the same distance radially. In calculating the radius heated rn energy losses from the wellbore and conduction to impermeable rock adjacent to the producing sands are taken into account. After steam injection is stopped, heat conduction continues and oil sands with r < ra cool as previously unheated shale and oil sand at r > r, begin to warm. The effect of warming of oil sand out beyond r, has little effect on the oil production rate compared to the effect of cooling of the oil sand nearer the wellbore than ra. Thus, in computing the oil production rate, an idealized step function temperature distribution in the reservoir is assumed where the original temperature exists for r > rn and where an average elevated temperature exists for r < rn. As part of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, the Gibbs energy of formation of sphalerite (zinc sulfide) was investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. In the temperature range 948 to 1,210 K, potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, ZnS + ZnO, S02 = 1 atm // Zr02 // Cu20 + Cu, Pt, with the overall cell reaction ZnS(c) + 3 Cu20(c) = ZnO(c) + 6 Cu(c) + S02(g). (1) These results, combined with the best available values of ?Gf° for ZnO, S02, and Cu20 from the literature, give the Gibbs energy of formation of zinc sulfide for the reaction Zn(l,v) + 1/2 S2(g) = ZnS© (2) ?Gf° = -64.223 + 24.02 X 10-3T ± 0.650 kcal/mole (3) (948-1,180 K; standard states - pure liquid zinc and S2 gas at 1 atm), and ?Gf° = -92.720 + 48.17 X 10-3 ± 0.650 kcal/mole (1,180-1,210 K; standard states - pure zinc vapor and S2 gas at 1 atm). A third law analysis yields for the formation reaction Zn(1) + 1/2 S2(g) = ZnS(c), (5) a standard enthalpy of formation as follows: ?Hf298.15 = -63.64 ± 0.700 kcal/mole.
